Some MCTS fares going up in 2017, paper tickets discontinued For the first time in more than five years, some Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) fares are increasing. The cost of a regular and premium 7-Day and 31-Day Pass is going up next year, while single ride fares, 1-Day Passes and reduced fare passes are staying the same. Even with the increase, riding transit is still a great way to save money. According to a November report from the American Public Transportation Association

'We Got This' hosts 500 Black Tuxedos 2016 event

On December 17, 2016 Andre Lee Ellis' (pictured left, with Mayor Tom Barrett) "We Got This" program hosted the annual 500 Black Tuxedos Event. The purpose of the event is to show our young Brothers, "that they can dress up their lives before they mess up their lives," said Ellis. Over 500 mentors registered and donated $75 so that 500 young men could rent a tuxedo and participate in a phenomenal day of planned activities, including dinner at the Pfister Hotel and the opportunity to learn from the older mentors. "We strongly believe that it will be very rewarding for our mentors as well," said Ellis. The event gives these young men a chance to put on a tux and march in the streets of Milwaukee with pride. The experience helps to open up youths' perspective of life. Other than the tuxedo rentals, all other expenses are covered. The tuxedo rental was generously provided Torrence’s House of Threads, 4722 West Fond du Lac Ave.

Miller Lite New Year's Eve free rides are returning to Milwaukee The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is teaming up with Miller Lite to provide Milwaukee residents and visitors with free bus service as they ring in the New Year. Miller Lite Free Rides will be available on all regular-route bus rides beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, with routes running until the end of regularly scheduled service. Several popular bus routes will have extended service until 4:00 a.m. Extended routes (GoldLine, GreenLine, BlueLine, Routes 14, 15, 19, 21, 27 and 30) will run their normal routes except Route 14, which will end at 74th and Holmes, and Route 19 will extend service only on S.13th

Street. “We’re excited to help people ring in the New Year safely by bringing Miller Lite Free Rides back to Milwaukee,” said Diane Wagner, Responsibility Initiatives Manager for MillerCoors. “Our partnership with MCTS will take countless cars off the road and help ensure the holiday is memorable for all the right reasons.” “Miller Lite Free Rides is

an important tradition to the Milwaukee County community. The program has kept our roads safe on New Year’s Eve for almost thirty years,” said Chris Abele, Milwaukee County Executive. “Community residents and visitors can always count on MCTS as their safe travel option to and from their celebrations on New Year’s Eve.” This is the 29th year in a row that MCTS and Miller Lite have offered free transportation on New Year’s Eve. Since the program’s inception, Miller Lite Free Rides has provided safe rides to more than 5.5 million people. For more information, visit www.MillerLiteFreeRides. com.

Perspectives

Rebuilding Our Community By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Looking for more When you believe you have seen or heard it all, something out of the bizarre occurs and it leaves you wondering what just happened. It also sets the stage for what might transpire next. It is worth noting that this election year has been quite entertaining, alarming and depressing all at the same time. On one hand, a number of things were called “unprecedented” or unusual for a presidential campaign. While on the other hand, several of the old tricks of “dirty” politics, name calling, voter suppression, intimidation and fear-mongering remained the norm. What is so surprising this year, unlike other years was the high level of sophistication, shifting tactics, key operatives, shallow narratives, email hacking and the role social media played. This does not overshadow the impact of “fake” stories, draining the swamp, lock her up, suspicion of voter fraud, recounts and the possible hacking of voting machines. And to take a few steps further, repealing the Affordable Care

winning the popular vote and thus a presidency that is considered illegitimate. The second major underlying issues in the room includes how to tackle rising drug addictions, mental health, economic disparity, immigration reform, affordable housing and improving education. Act, rebuilding the military, getting people back to work, returning jobs and businesses from overseas, changing the tax codes, revising Social Security, cancel or renegotiate trade agreements…the list is long and continues to grow each day due to new special interest groups.

I know that for many of us, the 2016 election did not turn out the way we had hoped or dreamed about. I know you were looking and expecting more, but this is “what we got.” The next few years are going to be one for our life time and it is going to be perhaps a real bumpy ride. It will not be business as All of these sound bites usual or one of comfort, so I are pretty interesting issues suggest to… “Strap yourself in to tackle, but what most of and hold on to something tight.” us really know is that “talk is cheap” and that change takes Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D., a lot longer than the first 100 can be heard each Sunday at days. COMMUNITY COLUMN World of possibilities opens for new UWM graduates By Angela McManaman The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has hosted more than 100 graduation ceremonies, but each one is remarkable because of the incredible – and incredibly diverse – experiences, educational accomplishments and career plans that shape the lives of new UWM graduates. So just one week before Christmas, on Dec. 18, 2016, more than 2,200 walked across the commencement stage to mark the end of their student career and the beginning of an exciting new chapter: life as a college graduate. “You are prepared for life’s opportunities and challenges and to confidently walk through open doors that you didn’t expect,” UWM Chancellor Mark Mone told the audience. “That is the power of higher education. Options. Possibilities. Lifelong learning and personal growth.” The opportunity to make an impact on her profession, her students and patients is what inspired nurse midwife and UWM clinical nursing instructor LuVerda Sayles Martin. She was awarded a doctorate in nursing practice on Dec. 18.

From Milwaukee to Italy to Guatemala, these members of the UWM Class of 2016 experienced life-changing moments on the road to graduation day. Read on as LuVerda Sayles Martin (left), Taylor Layton (center) and Cassandra Bence (right) share their success stories. “When you have a career that is rewarding and you are able to give back to other people, that is priceless,” Dr. Sayles Martin said. Life took her down the long road to a PhD. She had two daughters while in college, then studied and persevered through a year of surgery and chemotherapy to treat breast cancer. This 13-year journey is even more meaningful because of the impact she hopes to make: “I did not see a lot of women of color who were in the nursing discipline.” Fellow 2016 graduate Taylor Layton was born in Paraguay, raised an American citizen, educated at the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Army. As a history major at UWM, Layton found his

professional passion during an archaeology internship in Italy. He’s now moving to Washington, D.C. to work as marketing director of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation. Stabiae and its more famous neighbor, Pompeii, were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. During his first visit there, Layton learned about technological advances in historic preservation that allowed him to 3-D scan delicate ancient artifacts from the site. “It’s a visual form of documentation (in archaeology), and it kind of changes the game in the sense that once it becomes digitized,” Layton said, “you can send that file all over the world.”

Roman antiquity is just one of his passions. Layton also played professional soccer for the Milwaukee Wave, where many of his teammates were UWM alums and where he found camaraderie: “[Soccer] is not really about the touches on the ball, but the guys you get to play with.” Central America inspired civil engineering graduate Cassandra Bence, who made three trips to Guatemala while serving as a member, and eventually as president, of Engineers Without Borders at UWM. Planning and fundraising in Milwaukee, followed by construction and collaboration between the UWM student engineers and their host village, led to an amazing

moment: Clean water started to flow in a village that once didn’t have any. Turning the taps and drinking the water was an unforgettable experience for Bence. “To know that all your calculations, all the time you dedicated, staying up until 3 in the morning … brought water to someone’s house who had never seen running, potable water before – it’s one of the coolest experiences,” she said. “I’m beyond happy with the journey that I’ve taken with UWM and Engineers Without Borders. It’s changed my life. It’s changed my outlook on life.” It’s also changed life in the village. Residents there can rededicate the time they once spent gathering and transporting water to farming, education and creating products they can sell. Sayles Martin, Layton and Bence are just three of the many remarkable success stories that began an important new chapter on the UWM graduation stage this winter. “We hope that you will tell your stories often and with pride,” Mone told the graduates, “telling the world about this momentous day in your life.”

CAREGIVERS need care, too. Are you caring for a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, a disability, or raising a grandchild?

Mrs. Gertrude Grisham celebrated her 100th birthday on December 13, 2016. Many people may know her as a member of the Y's Menettes club for more than 20 years. She and her husband also owned the well known lounge, 11th Frame, for many years. The lounge was later sold to their grandson Robert D. Roberson, who operated it under the name Robert D's Lounge. As a surprise birthday present, Mrs. Grisham received Proclamations from the Mayor of Waukesha, the Mayor of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and a card and photo from the Obama Family. Mrs. Grisham has four daughters, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She is pictured(center) with her three daughters, Charlotte, Wendy, and Patricia with her Proclamations and photo. An NCON Communications Publication

PRESENTS:

MONEY MATTERS

By: Charlotte Ghazarian, Finacial Consultant

Charitable giving: Where head and heart meet

How can a person support organizations that help people in need? Some may choose to give their time and abilities through volunteer service, while still others provide financial support. Charitable giving provides an opportunity to engage both head and heart in making a difference. The following tips from Thrivent Financial can help donors make the most of their charitable gifts. • Choose a reputable organization. Never give to an organization without

qualified organization. • Give generously and wisely. From wills, living trusts, charitable gift annuities, endowments and mini-foundations to gifts of appreciated stock, retirement funds or real estate, there are many vehicles through which individuals can make charitable gifts. Special care should be used to determine the option that meets one’s financial circumstances. Gifting some assets to IRS-recognized charities may potentially reduce capital gains tax. Life insurance may also be an excellent option to magnify a gift. • Consult with experts. Always consult a financial, legal and/or tax professional before putting a gifting plan into action. When moved to make a difference, donors should remember there are many options for making a financial gift. Just be sure to explore the options and enlist appropriate support along the way. By fully planning a charitable gift, a person can ensure that both head and heart are satisfied. Charlotte Ghazarian’s office is at: 5205 N Ironwood Rd. Ste 123, Glendale WI, and she can also be reached at: (414) 963-8644
