Supervisor Taylor honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award

Kwanzaa Celebration with Top Ladies of Distinction and Top Teens of America

On Friday, December 3, 2022, County Supervisor Sequanna Taylor was honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Supervisor Taylor made the following statement:

“My thanks go out to those who chose to honor me, as well as to the long list of volunteers who have worked beside me over the years. To receive recognition from President Biden and Vice President Harris is truly an honor.

"As my own village battles through generational curses, I remain a public servant. It is only through serving our community and helping the most vulnerable that we truly serve ourselves and find peace. I refuse to stop ‘putting on’ for my city and I encourage others to do so as well.”

The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for those who contribute more than 4,000 hours of service in their lifetime. Along with the ultimate honor of Presidential recognition, honorees will receive a personalized certificate, an official pin, medallion or coin and a congratulatory letter signed by the President and Vice President of the United States.

Supervisor Taylor has volunteered her time to countless projects over the years including, but not limited to, Wisconsin Counties Association Board of Directors, various National County Association committees, Milwaukee County’s Commission on Aging, School Board Director for Milwaukee Public Schools, Dream Team MKE, Program the Parks, National Education Associate, Council of Urban Boards (CUBE), Local Progress, and several other local and national boards. Supervisor Taylor organizes monthly food and resource giveaways in Milwaukee. Her work extends well past Milwaukee County. Supervisor Taylor has organized national disaster relief efforts, delivering food and other resources to families. She also works internationally, most recently partnering with a school in Ghana to provide important hygiene items to the students there.

Billboards celebrating Supervisor Taylor and other recipients can be seen off I-41 in Menomonee Falls and above the 84 South retail development in Greenfield. Billboards can be found nationally in places like Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and more.

Same play, less pay

When WNBA star Brittney Griner was released from a Russian prison camp on December 8, 2022 after being detained for 10 months for allegedly bringing illegal hashish oil cartridges into the country, the public was happy and relieved that her freedom had been restored. However, simmering beneath the elation was the stark truth of why Griner found herself in Russia in the first place. It wasn’t due to a vacation getaway, but for bottom-line economics – namely, pay inequity.

Female professional athletes like Griner are just as talented and skilled as their male counterparts – with the college and professional statistics and Olympic medals to prove it. However, the salaries of female versus male basketball pros don’t even be-

gin to compare. According to Spotrac, a data service that tracks player contracts, the top four picks in the most recent WNBA draft received 3-year contracts worth $226, 668, or $75.500 per year. On the other hand, typical NBA top draft picks signed 4-year contracts for $45.6-million with an average annual salary of $11.4-million.

In addition, WNBA players are reported to be able to earn 5 to 8 times their WNBA salaries from overseas play. That can add $1.1to $1.8-million to female players’ annual earnings; quite a boost, but still it pales in comparison to the annual earnings of a male NBA player – even a modestly talented

rookie. Hence, athletes like Brittney Griner are forced to play overseas just to “make ends meet,” support their families, and make the most of their skills.

Those who try to justify this pay disparity cite any of the following reasons: the NBA’s 75-year existence versus the WNBA’s 25 years; greater revenue generated by the NBA versus the WNBA; and the NBA’s longer season (4 months) versus the WNBA (3 months).

There is also the disparity of revenue sharing. This involves pooling and redistributing certain earnings sources among competing teams in a league to lessen economic inequalities among teams. These measures may include sharing earnings generated by national, regional and/or local media rights and merchandising earnings (all those tee-shirts, jerseys and other sports-logo gear), among other things. Currently, revenue sharing ratios for the NBA are a 50-50 split

for players and team owners; in the WNBA the ratio is 20 percent for the players and 80 percent for the team owners.

Critics of this double standard have offered some suggestions for bridging the NBA/WNBA pay gap. They include: improving marketing activity for the WNBA; getting WNBA players more involved in promoting the league; extending the WNBA season; and revamping the WNBA revenue-sharing model to be comparable to that of the NBA.

Whether these measures would raise the profile – and the earnings – of WNBA players doesn’t excuse or dismiss the current reality. That is, WNBA players earn far less that their NBA counterparts, despite doing essentially the same work that requires the same skill level.

There definitely is something wrong with this picture. It’s called discrimination and it’s wrong…period.

Milwaukee North Sunrise hosts 'Christmas with Dignity' program in partnership with Blanket of Love

Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club (MNSRC) partnered with the Blanket of Love project to spread joy during the Christmas holiday season for the “Christmas with Dignity Program" for disadvantaged families. Rotary members' hearts are filled with joy while shopping to put smiles on the faces of children.

"Christmas with Dignity" is a social enterprise program that seeks to enhance the traditional charitable giving opportunity at Christmas. Over the last four years the club has chosen to give parents the "dignity" of selecting, buying and wrapping the gifts for their children for pennies on the dollar, thus giving parents a hand-up instead of a hand-out. In addition, parents select a charity to benefit from the funds they used to "purchase" the gifts to further enhance the joy of giving. The recipients donate funds to help charities such as Polio Plus and Blanket of Love.

The recipients are the families from the Blanket of Love Program. Sunrise Rotary Club chooses 12 families from several names given and each family has an average of 3-7 children 0-18 years old. At least 60 children received new clothing, toys and age-appropriate gifts. The Blanket of Love program is housed in the Ebenezer Church and the church allows free use of the facility for distribution and pick-up of the gifts by the parents. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Yes, we are all ready to meet family, travel to places and return to a degree of normalcy after two years of the pandemic and a year of adjusting to this new normal. But, like 2020, when COVID-19 crept into our rear view of life as we’d known it, 2022 year’s end has given us a triple whammy. We CANNOT IGNORE IT. It’s time to MASK UP AGAIN.

While the Center for Disease Control has NOT mandated masks, unless you are fully boosted and have a strong immune system, it might be good to don that mask again, this week. We shall be returning home through airports filled with people who have been exposed. And if you motored, you’ve been in service stations and convenience stores with millions who have likewise traveled and enjoyed

family and all of the viruses to which they have been exposed. In short, mask up, today. And, take advantage of the FREE COVID-19 and FLU SHOTS that are available right now at Health Connections, Inc.

The government set aside millions of dollars to ensure that everyone who needs to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the Omicron variants can do so FREE OF CHARGE by visiting their local Health Departments and various not-for-profit organizations who have been contracted to make the shots available.

The Wisconsin Council Of Churches with collaborative associations: MICAH; Souls To The Polls; Chorus Community Health Plans and Unite Wisconsin are holding Free Community Covid-19 Vaccination Clin-

ics. F R E E …No Costs! Take advantage of this opportunity to get your COVID-19 shots and boosters. Phone today!

There is no reason to worry about COVID-19. Do not be in denial. if you seem to show symptoms, use the free COVID-19 test kits and take your nasal sample right away. If positive, call

your health provider or pharmacist for next steps. There are oral medicines available. And, you can avoid the risk of infection and reduce hospitalizations by taking the shots today.

COVID-19 is not going away. We must be vigilant and take the vaccinations that help prevent COVID-19 and the Omi-

cron variants. The new booster is said to be over 85 percent effective against getting COVID-19. So, do it today:

Phone: 414-999-1099 for vaccination sites and dates they are available. Shots are free.

Visit: Health Connections, Inc. The vaccination clinic has been coordinated by the Wisconsin Council of Churches, where Pastor Teresa Thomas-Boyd works as a Vaccination Community Outreach Coordinator, phone her at 414-507-1115.

COVID -19 nor the flu need not devastate the community.
