THIS WEEK IN
Thursday, December 31: The first Watch Night Services were celebrated in black communities in 1862 in anticipation of the Emancipation Proclamation declaring all slaves in the Confederacy legally free. On that night, black slaves and free blacks came together in churches and private homes awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law. At the stroke of midnight, it was on January 1, 1863. Friday, January 1: Although legally unenforceable and leaving slaves in states loyal to the Union still in bondage, the Emancipation Proclamation eventually changed the nature of the war from a military dispute over secession into a crusade for the abolition of slavery in the North. Even though the law was legally unenforceable in the southern states of the Confederacy, it caused severe logistical problems for the Confederate war effort as news of freedom spread more and more slaves crossed over to Union lines, many to enlist against their former masters. Confederate soldiers were increasingly diverted from the front to guard slaves, which were an essential source of labor to the war effort, from escaping and the law bound the Union Army to offer sanctuary to escaped slaves. Saturday, January 2: Novelist, businessman and pioneer filmmaker Oscar Micheaux was born in 1884. Beginning with a novel, “The Conquest,” published in 1913, Micheaux depicted individual black struggles against prejudice and general opposition to racism. His first film, based on his second novel, was produced in 1919. Over the next three decades he went on to write, produce and direct more than 30 films, including “The Exile,” the first feature length black-themed film, in 1931. Sunday, January 3: The first recorded birth of a child of Africa descent was recorded in 1606 in the Cathedral Parish Archives in St. Augustine, Florida. At the time Spain claimed possession of Florida and other areas of the South, but slavery was first introduced by the English in 1619 at Jamestown, Virginia. Monday, January 4: Seven newly elected representatives joined with six incumbents to form the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969. The original group of 13 members consisted of one woman and 12 men. The CBC is a group of African American members of the United States Congress who focus on issues of particular interest to black Americans. While the CBC has been primarily focused on the concerns of African Americans, the caucus has also been at the forefront of legislative campaigns of human and civil rights for all citizens. The CBC currently includes 38 members, 14 women and 24 men. Tuesday, January 5: George Washington Carver, an African American scientist credited by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt with saving the agricultural industry in the South died in 1943. Among his many accomplishments was the encouragement of crop rotation, especially the use of peanuts and sweet potatoes to restore nitrogen-fixing bacteria depleted by cotton farming. In 1945, President Harry Truman declared January 5 as George Washington Carver Day and ordered that flags at all government buildings fly at half-mast beginning in 1946. Wednesday, January 6: Rep. John Conyers, a black Democratic Congressman from Michigan, introduced the first formal attempt to obtain reparations to compensate African Americans for slavery in 1989. As part of Reconstruction after the Civil War, blacks were promised 40 acres of farmland and a mule, but almost none received the compensation. Rep. Conyers’ bill sought to determine how much that compensation would be worth with interest and who would be eligible. The bill failed, but the issue continues to receive significant support. Salvation Army provides Christmas dinner for 8000 in Milwaukee The 26th annual Christmas Family Feast provided Christmas dinners to more than 8,000 Milwaukee area residents from 11 am to 2:30 pm at the Wisconsin Center District, located at 400 West Wisconsin St. The annual Milwaukee event is the largest Christmas event hosted by the Salvation Army on Christmas Day in the U.S. The event was free and open to the public and with unseasonably nice weather they came in large numbers and stayed to share in the spirit of Christmas joy. Chiquita Haynes and Bobby Porter became engaged on Christmas Eve when Porter got down on his knee and proposed on the corner of 10th and Madison Ave. The young couple said the opportunity to enjoy a Christmas feast made the season even more special. “Christmas Family Feast is a Milwaukee tradition bringing together those in need and those of means for a day of fun, food, friendship and fellowship. We encourage everyone to join us on Christmas Day,” said Salvation Army Divisional Commander for Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Major Dan Jennings. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Family Feast was sponsored in part by the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, the Brewer’s Community Foundation, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, Hupy & Abraham, Concordia University of Wisconsin, AT&T, Landmark Credit Union and WE Energies as well as many other organizations which donated in kind publicity of food. For Tommie Medley, an 83-year-old widow, it meant all the difference. who requires a mobility scooter to get around, was one of 11 children, but she has outlived all of her family except for a sister who now lives in Chicago. “I had two strokes a while back and the doctors don’t want me to travel by myself anymore,” she said. “I like to stay busy, so I don’t have a lot of time to think about being lonely. I’ve never been bored a day in my life,” she said with a smile. “I think this is wonderful. When you wake up you can make your own day good or bad. It’s easy when you can look forward to coming here and sharing a Christmas dinner with so many other people.” More than 1,400 volunteers helped prepare a homestyle dinner of turkey, ham, yams, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, beverages and desert. Ice cream and generous slices of traditional favorite pumpkin pie were among the desert choices. Jaylin Moore, 16, Nate Harris, 18, and Nate Moore, 18, are all friends from indiVisible Hoops, a basketball
league whose season runs from March through August, but the teams often meet year round doing volunteer occasional volunteer work, according to Coach Larry Moore. The young men said that volunteering to help serve Christmas dinner gave them an opportunity to contribute back to the community and make their community a better place. Volunteers put in long hours. Anita Bentley, a guest host coordinator for the Salvation Army, said she would work at least 12 hours on Christmas, but that rather than leaving her exhausted, she felt exhilarated as she rushed past with a last call platter of pumpkin pie slices. The event brought people together who otherwise might never meet. Rob Givens and his girlfriend Crystal Griffin met Terry Baer as the three were assigned to desert duty. The event also featured a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus who distributed presents to children. For more photos see page 6.

Being Frank As 2016 starts many people will begin New Year’s resolutions. There are people who will give up drinking, or try. Many Americans will start exercising swearing to lose weight. Others will say they will “do better” in 2016. What “do better” means only these people and God know. What if people decided to give up the illusion of money equaling happiness? “Money is the key to end all your woes.” That line is from Run-DMC’s It’s Like That. Many people on this planet believe this statement. But if we are going to be truthful about money, it doesn’t end woes. If people were truly honest money usually creates problems. Before you chop my head off, think. Chasing money and seeking solace in the acquisition has never brought anyone peace. Money is a great tool, but since when has it been the end all be all to everlasting happiness? How much are you willing to sacrifice to attain a heavy bank account? The merry go around of American society is fueled by this insane quest for monetary happiness. But just like chasing the Holy

Grail it’s an illusion. I’m not saying that being poor is beautiful either. Trust me I know that’s a lie. I am saying that money is an instrument to be played or used like a tool. A person who chases money usually never takes the time to enjoy what they have. True they may buy big houses, fancy cars and clothes but they never really enjoy them. Why? These people are usually out trying to get more money. Many of these “go getter” types ignore family and simple living in the chase of money. By the time they realize what has been missed it is usually too late to redeem the error. Money has also been turned into a major factor in
romance. Many people want to marry someone for financial security. You see this often in professional people. These marriages often turn into ones of convenience. There is no love between the spouses but they have good credit. How many beautiful people have married wealthy people and wound up trading their looks for a Mercedes? “It’s like the more money we run across the more problems we see.” Notorious B.I.G. was on the right path in the song Mo Money Mo Problems. Look back and think about all the rich and famous that live on financial levels many can’t imagine. While doing this think about the problems these financially secure peo-
ple have. Exactly. A druggie is a druggie whether they are rich or poor. Any fool knows that there are more drugs in the affluent suburbs than the inner city. If money was instant happiness then why are the people with more money buying stronger drugs? Why is the upper middle class housewife a drunk? Why is the high school sophomore teen that has a BMW going to counseling? Why is that powerful businessman who has the house, bank account and prestige contemplating suicide? If people gave up the illusion of monetary happiness money could be used properly in life. Money is something that should be used to get items you want. Money is not a security blanket for the future. How many times have you heard about a person working their entire life only to retire and drop dead? The money saved went to their family, which is fine. I’m sure the dead person had other ideas. Money, money, money. Maybe Stuart Wilde was right when he said, “Use money to buy a whole lot of experi-

Bible Scripture for the week from The Book of Psalms Only fools say in their hearts, 'There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one! Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to the Lord. Terror will grip them, for God is with those who obey him. The wicked frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the Lord will protect his people. Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel? When the Lord restores his people, Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice. - Psalm 14 Holy Bible, New Living Translation
