ed for Spring Training to begin, but also, for an opportunity to get up close and personal with players and coaches. Said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger, "The players actually like it." During this unofficial kickoff to the Brewers season, fans got a sneak peek at some of the newest promotions. "We have fan giveaways including a Uecker alarm clock. We have T-shirts for June, July and August so every fan gets a free T-shirt with a different design," Schlesinger said. The Milwaukee Brewers' Opening Day is set for April 4, 2016 at Miller Park. 'Life Happens': A fundraiser for community leader ReDonna Rodgers Sometimes life happens and those that strive to help others need a little help themselves. That was the purpose of the fundraiser held Thursday, January 28, 2016 for The Center For Teaching Entrepreneurship's founder and CEO Redonna Rodgers (seated center). The "Life Happens Fundraiser" was held at Garfield's 502, 502 W. Garfield Ave. The event featured a live DJ, a silent auction and special performances by Joe Jordan, saxophonist Michele Miller, comedian MscutNup, R&B singer Delta Triplett, and Butterfly and the Urban Line Dancing Junkies. The event was held not only to honor Ms. Rodgers but also to help raise funds to cover the cost of a recent medical illness. Former Alderman Mike McGee, Jr., holds early voting rally at city hall On Monday, February 1, 2016 former Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee, Jr., returned to City Hall for a rally aimed at encouraging people to vote in the upcoming spring election. "This is the worst place for black folks, and black people, no matter how much money you make," McGee told the crowd. "It's time for us to really just take the city over — we're one of the biggest ethnic groups. And it's time not just for black folks, but all people of color in this city, to unite around changing our conditions." McGee said the push to encourage people to participate in early voting, which started Monday, was just the beginning of his "We Built This City" movement. Flanked by people holding signs and wearing shirts featuring a photograph of black workers at City Hall in 1895, McGee said the "city was built on the backs of black people." McGee was joined at the rally by representatives from Pastors United, the Nation

of Islam, Ald. Joe Davis, Ald. Milele Coggs and other Common Council candidates. Davis, who is running for mayor, spoke of systemic poverty, the "mass incarceration of the African American male" and a lack of jobs. In races where there are more than two people running, candidates will be on the Feb. 16 primary ballot. In two-person races, there's no need for a primary and both candidates will appear on the April 5 spring election ballot. Mayor Tom Barrett faces three challengers: Davis, Ald. Bob Donovan and political newcomer James Methu. After the event, McGee voted for the first time in more than a decade. Like other convicted felons in Wisconsin, he again became eligible to vote once he finished serving his sentence, which includes extended supervision, probation and parole. McGee said his "We Built This City" movement would include get-out-the-vote ef-

Apprenticeship program helping Milwaukee residents obtain construction certification

Wallace Stewart, a 41-yearold Milwaukee native, was determined to turn his life around after serving a nineyear prison sentence. Stewart, a married father of three children, enrolled in a job training program, but most of the jobs were temporary and short term. Then one day his luck turned. Duwe Metal Products, Inc., CEO and Owner Jeannie Lauret and Joel Allen from the local chapter of the glaziers union visited the job center and encouraged Stewart and others to apply for Big Step, a pre-apprenticeship tutoring program that helps prepare community residents for apprenticeships in the construction trades. As part of the bidding process for the 32-story addition to its historic downtown headquarters which broke ground in August 2014, Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company promised to

kee native who already had begun working toward an apprenticeship in carpentry, are two of the Milwaukee residents who are were accepted into an innovative onthe-job apprenticeship program. They are assembling the aluminum skeleton, applying weatherproofing compound and then gluing huge panels of high-tech glass at the old Talgo train manufacturing facility located in the Century City industrial park. The assembled glass and aluminum panels will form the outer walls of the new office tower. The work they are performing counts toward the mandatory number of hours a worker needs to accumulate in order to be accepted into a commercial construction union and, in contrast to most apprenticeship programs, the apprentices are being paid as if they were already members of the union. “This is a big step for us because we already are in a job,” said Johnson who is married and has a six-yearold daughter. “That’s usually the goal of going through apprenticeship training. Our boss, [Production Manager] Tim [Lentz], has already taught us a tremendous amount.” Both Johnson and Stewart, who also has three grandchildren, said they feel a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment in helping to change the downtown Milwaukee skyline. “I’ll be able to point to that building and tell my grandchildren that I helped build that,” Stewart said. “I am going to take full advantage of this opportunity.” Lauret and Duwe Metal Products Inc., which is overseeing the apprenticeship program in partnership with the union, were also beneficiaries of Northwestern Mutual’s commitment to using Milwaukee workers and small businesses. In December 2010, after working in different capacities within Duwe for 24 years, she took over ownership of Duwe Metals from her father who had owned the business since 1981. Rebuilding Our Community

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Let’s build something better There are a number of old adages that we use to describe how we feel about a lot of things that occur from time to time. These adages are helpful during times when it is hard to put words to paper and thoughts into action. In so many ways adages gives us an opportunity to express some of our deepest emotions while at the same time gives us pause to help put the situation into perspective. An adage, in other words, gives us a break and helps to provide a context in which to frame the situation at hand. Some of the most used adages, some you have heard before and perhaps have used include, “the show must go on.” What about, “you can push people just so far.” How about, “you get what you pay for,” or “a picture is worth a thousand words.” And of course the one used during the Wall Street bailout, “Too big to fail.” And here is one of my all-time favorites, “there is no such thing as a free lunch.” Well, you get the picture.

Northwestern Mutual Apprenticeship (Continued from pg. 3)

Lauret examined opportunities for growth in an industry that was struggling due to the nation-wide recession. She applied for and was approved as a Certified Woman Owned Business Enterprise

There is nothing like it when an adage is used to describe a situation or to call attention to something that is affecting us. Most people when hearing one begin instantly to analyze the adage to see if it fits the situation, and if not, may offer up one of their own. What most people do not realize is that an adage is a form of oral communication, a proverb, or saying that perhaps fits the moment. Many of these adages are passed down from

one generation to another and are better known as folk wisdom. Over time they have gained credibility in the life experiences of people and communities. Of course I want to add to the great list of notable adages with, “Let’s build something better.” Well, I know it may not mean anything to you and may not become a top ten nominee or become the title of a movie that wins

carceration of people of color, inadequate social support systems, out of sight and out mind gun violence, etc., etc., etc. And if you are seeing what I am seeing, there has to be a better way to solve our issues... and what about “if we build it, they will come.” What do you think? The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Living a life that matters: It’s worth taking a few dares (Conclusion) "There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long range risks and costs of comfortable inaction." - John F. Kennedy When Maya Angelou was initially asked by James Baldwin to write “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” (Ballantine Books, reissued, 2009) she declined. It is said that James Baldwin conspired with Maya Angelou’s editor, Robert Loomis, and said “if you want Maya to do something,” Baldwin said, “tell her she can’t do it.” Loomis followed Baldwin’s advice, called Angelou, and told her to forget it because writing a memoir didn’t make any sense. He said, “It’s nearly impossible to write an autobiography as literature.” Maya Angelou took the bait and the rest is history. The final lesson from the life of Maya Angelou for living a life that matters is: Lesson #5: It’s Worth Taking A Few Dares In Maya Angelou’s early formative years, she saw disappointment, frustration and sadness. Her parents di-

vorced when she was three years old and she spent several years under the care of her grandparents. Then when she finally moved back with her mother at the age of eight, she was sexually abused by her mom’s boyfriend. Within hours of his conviction, the abuser was murdered. Maya Angelou blamed herself for the man’s death. The trauma was so great and overwhelming for young Angelou that she became a mute and would not speak for years. Angelou wrote poems in her teens, moved to New York as a young woman and joined the Harlem Writers Guild; then travelling abroad she worked as a journalist in Egypt and Ghana. Returning to the States she became active in the Civil Rights Movement

Bible Scripture for the week from The Book of Psalms A psalm of David

and worked as a singer, actor and screenwriter. One’s faith grows when they are able to go out on a limb and take a risk - not just any kind of risk, but the ones specifically directed by God. Have you ever trusted God to the point you were able to go out on a limb with God? Sometimes we desire to live a risk-free life; but if we long to live close to God there are times when we must relinquish the tendency to play it safe and trust God to lead us step-by-step. As you live in close communion with God, God will protect you wherever you go. The next time God nudges you beyond the borders of your comfort zone into the land of living a life by faith, remember the words of the Psalmist: “Even though I walk

through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod to protect and Your staff to guide, they comfort and console me.” (Psalm 23:4) Beloved, it is this writer’s prayer as you begin the New Year; you will use these lessons from the life and legacy of Maya Angelou to be the fuel that fires up your tank to propel you towards living a life that matters in 2016 and beyond. To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness. In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall. God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help[d] has made me great. You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. I chased my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until they were conquered. I struck them down so they could not get up; they fell beneath my feet. You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer. I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt. You gave me victory over my accusers. You appointed me ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. 44 As soon as they hear of me, they submit; foreign nations cringe before me. They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted! He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he subdues the nations under me and rescues me from my enemies. - Psalm 18: 25- 48 Holy Bible,

New two-year culinary program coming to four MPS high schools to connect students to in-demand careers Four MPS high schools will launch the pilot of a new two-year culinary program this fall that helps students get a head start in the hospitality industry, a field expected to experience higher than average wages in careers ranging from restaurant management to food service. ProStart is a curriculum created by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation specifically designed for high school students. The ProStart program in Wisconsin is managed by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation. It features real-world culinary arts and food service management opportunities, helping students learn skills that can last a lifetime. Whether students dream of being worldclass chefs or managing restaurants, ProStart gives

students a great start. The local hospitality industry is an important partner in the pilot launch and operation of the ProStart program in these four MPS schools. The hospitality industry has committed to being a major funding partner and staff from Milwaukee’s finest restaurants and the hospitality industry will participate with the schools as mentors. A culinary and food service management program is a natural fit for Milwaukee. Restaurants are a driving force in Wisconsin’s economy with thousands of restaurants, hotels and other food service operations offering employment opportunities throughout the state - especially in the Milwaukee region. In fact, restaurants account for 1 in 10 jobs in Wisconsin, according to the National Restaurant Associ-

ation. A fundraising campaign is expected to be launched in the spring to help fund the cost of launching and operating the ProStart program in these four schools. ProStart will build on the unique strengths of each participating school: • Bay View High School, which launched a partnership with Arts @ Large and local restaurant Honeypie to connect students to culinary arts • James Madison Academic Campus, which offers a NAF Photos by MPS Academy of Finance that can help students better understand the business aspects Hospitality and tourism academy students from MPS' of fields such as culinary arts Washington High School of Information Technology. • Harold S. MPS enrollment for fall now open: Apply through Feb. 19 for the best opportunity to attend your first-choice school Families looking for a new school for the fall are encouraged to apply now through February 19 for the best opportunity to attend their first-choice school. The annual MPS ThreeChoice Enrollment process is opening as the district is continuing to expand access to strong academic programs. Three-Choice allows parents and guardians looking for a new school for the fall to select up to three schools they would like for their child. Families can apply online at mpsmke.com/EnrollMPS, at any MPS school, or between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at MPS Central Services, 5225 W. Vliet Street, Milwaukee 53208. The MPS website offers a ‘Find a School’ feature – at mpsmke.com/findaschool – to help select the right school based upon program, grade level, location, or transportation. Those seeking new schools or learning opportunities will find some with new locations, others undergoing expansion and still others growing or adding programs. This is part of MPS’ efforts to expand strong programs through its Regional Development Plan. Efforts now underway to offer more options include: MPS is building an addition for Fernwood Montessori School, allowing the high-performing K-8 school

Milwaukee Excellence Charter School, a new MPS charter school, will begin serving students in grade 6 in the fall, tentatively at the former McNair School site, 4950 N. 24th Street, Milwaukee 53209. Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School is expanding to a second campus, 3575 S. 88th Street, Milwaukee 53228, to serve more students. This fall, the new campus will serve all of the school’s students in grades K4 and K5 with students in grades 1-5 attending school at the current MSIS campus, 2765 S. 55th Street, Milwaukee 53219. By 2017-18, the 88th Street campus will serve all 1st-grade students as well with the current campus serving grades 2-5.

Get your life! 4 ways to de-stress instantly Are you a brand new business owner? New parent? Starting a new job in a new city? Or maybe you’ve been given more responsibilities on your current job and today is the day that your introductory presentation is due. It’s quite possible that none of these may fit your current circumstances, but none of us are exempt from slight to severe forms of stress. Not all stress is bad, however, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. With prolonged or chronic stress, the same nerve chemicals that are life-saving in short bursts can suppress functions that aren’t needed for immediate survival. Chronic stress can lead to lowered immunity and problems with your digestive and reproductive systems, among other things. The key is not allowing the stress to overcome you! Yes, everyone will handle (and has handled) stress in different ways, so not every solution is

going to work for you; however, here are a few things to consider in an effort to destress! 1. Stop waiting until the last possible minute to get things done. Some of our stress is brought on by our own actions. There are some people who feel that they work well under pressure, or work well against a deadline looming near; it’s not healthy. Any way you slice it, you are producing anxiety, and there

is always the possibility that you will make errors. Plan a strategy for getting projects done. Work on them a little at a time, especially if you have multiple projects to complete that will be due around the same time. 2. Find time in your day to simply “breathe”. It may be that your lunch hour is the only time that you are able to take your mind off of work. Make sure that you use any free time wisely that you are able to secure. Play soft

music, try reading the “funny papers” (laughing is very relaxing), start reading your new book or write in your journal. Free time should be used to be “free,” so no working on your breaks. 3. Plan a “staycation”. We aren’t always able to travel to that tropical island, or to another desirable place away from home, but a mini “staycation” may just be the perfect getaway from the norm that you could use! For example, if you are a resident of the East Coast, book a hotel room for the weekend, catch a Broadway play or two, and eat at restaurants that you wouldn’t ordinarily patronize. Experience your city in a totally different way by planning a staycation. 4. Make time for meditation and reflection weekly. You would be the one to determine how frequently during the week you would need to schedule this quiet time, however, it’s important to unwind and think about where you are, where

you’re headed, and what you may need to do differently. A study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison indicates that the practice of “Open Monitoring Meditation” (such as Vipassana), reduces the grey-matter density in areas of the brain related with anxiety and stress. You are important to your end goal. If you’re always sick or always tired, how will you effectively reach your end goal? Spend some time with your spouse; read a book to your children; have a visit with an elderly relative; sit quietly at your favorite coffee house… you choose what quiet meditation and reflection looks like and get some of that time in for yourself. It is very easy for us to get overwhelmed and we sometimes take out our frustrations on those closest to us. Let’s practice productive selfcare habits to ensure that we are being good to ourselves! Stress will come, but make sure that stress will go!

internal clock gets constantly reset. Instead, wake up at a similar time on the weekend so that you don’t break your body’s rhythm. 2. Overloading on caffeine. From coffee to tea to soda, the caffeine you drink during the day adds up. Eliminate caffeine from your diet at least six hours before bedtime, based on a study by researchers at Michigan’s Henry Ford Hospital’s Sleep Disorders & Research Center and Wayne State College of Medicine. 3. Long afternoon napping. Short naps that are 15 to 20 minutes can help you recharge when you’re exhausted and it’s nowhere near bedtime, but sleep longer than that and you’re in trouble. Try to stop napping if it’s causing insomnia, but if you can’t get through the day without a little siesta, make sure that it’s short. 4. Skipping the day’s workout. It’s easy to skip a workout when your schedule is jampacked, but exercise is an important part of reducing stress and improving your mood, which helps you sleep. Sketching out just 30 minutes of moderate exercising most days of your week will help, according to a study by Harvard Medical School. 5. Staring at too much light. To sleep, you need melatonin — a neurohormone that causes sleep — and to produce it, your brain needs dark. Too much light, especially from staring at a computer or television screen before you go to sleep, can stop you from falling asleep quickly.

The Practical Money Skills website offers a collection of games (http:// www.practicalmoneyskills. com/games/) kids can play to learn how to save money. Talk to them about important financial concepts such as budgeting – and bring them to life using real-life examples like planning an affordable family vacation or outing. • Introduce the emergency fund. One of the essential building blocks of personal finance, the emergency fund exists to protect savings and keep borrowing to a minimum. Older children might embrace the value of an emergency fund as a way to

offset the financial loss of a lost bike or smartphone or some other personal item. For adults, the general rule of thumb on emergency funds is to have at least three to six months of savings on hand in case of a lost job or expensive repair. The key is to talk with the teen about the parallel financial risks in their lives that might benefit from the existence of emergency savings. • Focus on things more important than… things. Parents can use a tough financial stretch to focus on the positive, such as time spent enjoying family, friends and pets, which doesn't cost much at all. Good health and healthy behaviors are essential elements of correcting problems, overcoming tough times and living a full life. In short, use this moment in time to help your child put money in the proper perspective. Bottom line: A money crisis can truly test the strength of a family. Should you find yourself in a financial bind, use it to teach your kids some very important money lessons.

Brian Owens brings the hits of Marvin Gaye to life on stage What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience is coming to the Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall on February 18-20. The show highlights many of Marvin Gaye’s legendary hits and upholds the tradition of true soul music. What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience invites audiences to celebrate the hits of the legendary Marvin Gaye. Brian Owens performs selections that span Gaye’s music-making career. Early solo hits like “Can I Get a Witness” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” share space with “You’re All I Need to Get By” and other classic duets. No Marvin Gaye song list would be complete without classics like “Let’s Get It On” or “Got To Give It Up.” At its heart, Brian Owens’ Marvin Gaye Experience is about preservation and upholding the tradition of true soul music. The show prominently features a suite of pieces from Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album, which Brian counts as one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music. In light of recent events in and around Ferguson, Missouri where he resides, Brian says the show also speaks to a heightened sense of urgency and the

formed at the White House before First Lady Michelle Obama, dazzles audiences with performances that are full of soul and love well beyond his peers of today. His refined style which is in essence classic soul with a slight modern touch tells of a new star born in this generation and helps sustain the REAL MUSIC scene.

Brian Owens as Marvin Gaye prophetic beauty of Gaye’s 1971 work. Sitting across the table from Brian Owens, one might get the feeling of conversing with — as some say — an old soul. There is a calmness and self-assuredness that suggests he’s been here before, even though he is only on the verge of becoming the new voice of American soul. He doesn’t project the harried, fast-paced life of a national recording artist, but rather the soulful energy that dominates his music. Raised in the St. Louis region, Brian Owens is a soul man often referred to as the "second coming of Marvin Gaye.” Owens, who has per-

Bring the heat. Spice things up with peppers as an added ingredient to other treats like pizza and nachos, or make the pepper the star, as with these Jalapeno Poppers, which blend the heat of a whole jalapeno balanced by the distinctive flavors of goat, Jarlsberg and Parmesan cheeses. Thursday, February 4: Civil Rights pioneer Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born in 1913. As the 1950’s began, the segregated seating policies on public buses in Montgomery, Alabama were a growing source of resentment and bitterness within the black community. Blacks were required to pay their fares at the front of the bus, and then board again through the back door. The white bus drivers would sometimes drive away before the passenger was able to board the back of the bus. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks took her seat in the front of the “colored section.” When the driver asked Parks and three other black riders to give up their seats to whites, Rosa Parks refused and was arrested. She soon agreed to let the NAACP provide legal counsel. Her case was filed in United States District Court, which ruled in her favor, a decision later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. Rosa Parks was more than an inadvertent symbol. Her arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a bus set in motion the turning point in the African-American battle for Civil Rights. After her death on October 24, 2005 she became the first woman to lie in honor in the vast circular room under the U.S. Capitol dome. By voice vote the House of Representatives agreed to the action “so that the citizens of the United States may pay their last respects to this great American.” Friday, February 5: In 1866 Congressman and abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens proposed real-estate compensation for emancipated black slaves. His proposal was an amendment to a Freedmen’s Bureau bill authorizing the distribution of public and confiscated land to freedmen and loyal refugees in 40-acre lots. The measure was defeated in the House by a vote of 126 to 37. A black delegation, led by Frederick Douglass called on President Andrew Johnson and urged ballots for former slaves. The meeting ended acrimoniously after President Johnson reiterated his opposition to black suffrage. Saturday, February 6: The Peabody Fund, which provided funds for construction, endowments, scholarships, teachers and industrial education for newly freed slaves, was established in 1867 by George Peabody, a white investor. The fund is considered by scholars to be one of the first truly modern philanthropies because the trustees devised a system under which the foundation would provide challenge grants to local communities. Help was also targeted strategically. The fund would seek locations where there were sufficient numbers of students and cooperative public officials who would combine the relatively small grant with tax money. By the second decade of the 20th Century a large number of southern communities had been able to build schools because of the efforts by the Peabody Fund which were later joined by other philanthropic organizations that imitated Peabody’s methods. Sunday, February 7: In 1926, Carter G. Woodson initiated the first National Negro Week. In 1972, it was renamed Black History Week and in 1976, it became Black History Month. During the month, lectures, exhibitions, banquets, cultural events, television and radio programs celebrate the achievements of African Americans. Since 1978, the U.S. Postal service has participated by issuing a commemorative stamp honoring notable African Americans. Monday, February 8: Black physician and author. Rebecca Davis Lee was born in 1831. She was raised in Pennsylvania by an aunt who cared for infirm neighbors. During the years before the Civil War, medical care for poor blacks was almost non-existent. She moved to Charlestown, Massachusetts around 1852 and was employed as a nurse until she was accepted into the New England Female Medical College in 1860. When she graduated in 1864, Dr. Lee was the first black woman in the United States to earn an M.D. degree, and the only black woman to graduate from New England Female Medical College. Tuesday, February 9: African American aviator Charles Anderson was born in 1907. He taught himself to fly at the age of 22 in a used plane purchased with his savings and funds borrowed from friends and relatives. He earned a commercial pilot’s license in 1932. During the next two years, Charles Anderson made several history-making long-distance flights accompanied by his friend Dr. Albert E. Forsythe. The Anderson-Forsythe long-distance flights attracted worldwide attention and popularized aviation in the black community. In 1940 Anderson was hired by the Tuskegee Institute as its Chief Flight Instructor and charged to develop a pilot training program. At that time Anderson was the only black aviator in the United States who held a commercial pilot’s license. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt took a special interest in the Tuskegee flight program and visited the school in 1941. During her tour Charles Anderson invited her to fly with him around the field. Their 40 minute flight together did much to advance the cause of black aviation, leading to the eventual creation of the “Tuskegee Experiment” and the famous Tuskegee “Red Tail” bomber escort pilots of World War II. Anderson was that program’s greatest adviser. Wednesday, February 10: African American singer and educator Roberta Flack was born in 1937. She earned a BA degree in Music from Howard University, and taught high school Music and English briefly in North Carolina. She began her professional recording career for Atlantic Records without much success, until 1972 when one of her earliest recordings, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” was included on the soundtrack to the movie Play Misty for Me. It became a #1 hit. The next year she recorded another number one hit: “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” Roberta Flack struck gold again with “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” in 1983, and “Set the Night to Music” in 1991.
