Obama travels country promoting opportunity for everyone President Barack Obama (speaking at podium) visited several US cities last week, after his State of the Union Address to the US Congress and American public. One of those stops was in Waukesha, Wisconsin where the president visited the General Electric gas engines facility. During his stop there, the president discussed his opportunity agenda, which he mentioned during his SOTU address, which includes: to create more new jobs; train individuals to fill those jobs; guarantee every child access to as world-class education; and make sure hard work pays off. He also highlighted Wisconsin’s youth apprenticeship programs, which offer residents the skills they need to fill a job. Also pictured with the president are student apprentices of Big Step, a local training partnership focusing on the industrial trades.

The class is taught by Mrs. Connie Michaud and Mrs. Tammy Sorrel. The theme of this year’s essay contest was ‘Nonviolence . . . the most potent weapon.’ The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Student Essay Contest, in its 31st year, is sponsored by the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Martin Luther King's children back in court over his bible, Nobel Peace Prize The children of Martin Luther King Jr., are back at loggerheads -- this time over his Bible and Nobel Peace Prize. The estate of the civil rights icon filed a complaint in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta to force Bernice King, his daughter, to turn over the items. King's heirs agreed in 1995 to give up their inheritance to the estate of Martin Luther King Jr. Inc., the complaint reads. Bernice King has "repeatedly acknowledged and conceded the validity" of the agreement, but has "secreted and sequestered" the items in question, it says. The King estate - which is controlled by Dexter King and Martin Luther King III -- wants Dr. King's 1964 Nobel Peace Prize and traveling Bible, which was used by President Barack Obama when he was sworn in for his second term. Bernice King says her brothers just want the items to sell them. "Our father MUST be turning in his grave," she said in a Febuary 4, 2014 statement. "While I love my brothers dearly, this latest decision by them is extremely troubling. Not only am I appalled and utterly ashamed, I am frankly disappointed that they would even entertain the thought of selling these precious items.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., shows off his Nobel Peace Prize medal at ceremonies in Oslo, Norway on Decmeber 10, 1964. It reveals a desperation beyond comprehension." The complaint does not mention the possibility of a sale, and attempts to contact the King brothers, through the estate, were unsuccessful. This is not the first time the family has been at odds over King's legacy. Over the years, the siblings have sued and counter-sued one another. Bernice King and Martin Luther King III sued Dexter King in 2008, accusing him of converting "substantial funds from the estate's financial account at Bank of America" for his own use. They later agreed to a settlement and avoided a public trial.

Alderman Willie Hines, Jr. vacates Common Council seat and presidency Common Council President Willie L. Hines, Jr., who has served as Milwaukee’s 15th District Alderman since 1996 and Council president since 2004, resigned from his seat on the Council on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Alderman Hines has taken a position at the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. Alderman Hines served as chair of the Housing Authority board, and will vacate his position on that board as well. At its February 11 regular meeting, the Common Council will vote to elect a new president (a special election will also eventually be held to fill the vacant Council seat). “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the residents of the 15th District and all of the City of Milwaukee for the last 18 years,” Alderman Hines said. “We have so much to be proud of and thankful for. After ten years in the President’s chair, the time has come for a new challenge, and to let the next Council member continue the work for the district.” This past fall, Hines oversaw the passage of his 10th budget as Common Council President. The budget passed unanimously, and was signed into law by Mayor Tom Barrett with no vetoes. “We have built a strong working relationship between the members of the Council, and with the Mayor,” Alderman Hines said. “It was a proud

Willie L. Hines, Jr. moment to see the Council come together, despite strongly divergent views, and pass a thoughtful budget unanimously, which then won the full support of the Mayor.” Hines grew up in the neighborhood he represented on the Council, and as a boy frequented the Boys Club and the YMCA, and lived for a time in public housing. He has dedicated much of his time in office to improving public safety and developing stronger urban neighborhoods. Hines sponsored legislation to secure $20 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish the City of Milwaukee’s Me2 Energy Efficiency Program, reducing energy expenditures for residents and businesses while creating jobs to implement energy-efficiency

CVS stores to stop selling tobacco Want to pick up a pack of cigarettes with your prescription refill? A major U.S. pharmacy chain is breaking that habit. CVS Caremark announced Wednesday, February 5, 2014 it will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at its CVS/pharmacy stores by October 1. The retailer said the move makes CVS/pharmacy the first chain of national pharmacies to take tobacco products off the shelves. "Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health," Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Caremark, said in a statement. "Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose." CVS Caremark is the largest pharmacy in the United States based on total prescription revenue, according to the company. It operates more than 7,600 CVS/phar-

macy stores nationwide in addition to more than 800 MinuteClinics, which are medical clinics within the pharmacy locations. "As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today's decision will help advance my administration's efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs -- ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come," Obama said in a statement Wednesday. "This is an important, bold public health decision by a major retail pharmacy to act on the long understood reality that blending providing health care and providing cigarettes just doesn't match," said Dr. Richard Wender, chief cancer control officer at the American Cancer Society. "We need an all-hands-ondeck effort to take tobacco products out of the hands of America's young genera-

tion, and to help those who are addicted to quit," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement. "Today's CVS Caremark announcement helps bring our country closer to achieving a tobacco-free generation. I hope others will follow their lead." It remained unclear whether other pharmacies will follow CVS' lead. "We have been evaluating this product category for some time to balance the choices our customers expect from us with their ongoing health needs," Walgreen spokesman Jim Graham said in a statement. "We will continue to evaluate the choice of products our customers want, while also helping to educate them and providing smoking-cessation products and alternatives that help to reduce the

demand for tobacco products." Meanwhile, David Howard, spokesman for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., said, "We value the long-term relationship with CVS and respect their commercial decision. We will work with them as they transition out of the tobacco category in the coming months." Stopping cigarette sales comes at a price. CVS Caremark estimates it will take an annual loss of $2 billion from tobacco shoppers -$1.5 billion in tobacco sales and the rest from other products tobacco shoppers purchase while in the store. The company has enjoyed growing revenues in recent years, boosted by its pharmacy services business and prescription drug sales. CVS Caremark hasn't reported its year-end results yet, but it took in nearly $94 billion in revenues in the first nine months of 2013, up slightly from the same period in 2012, according to its most recent earnings report.

projects. "In my view, the new, green urban economy – with its hallmark emphasis on sustainability and urban architecture – is here to stay,” he said. “I see Milwaukee getting stronger,” he said. “The Potawatomi are expanding their footprint and building a great new hotel. Manpower brought their headquarters downtown, Time Warner Cable stayed, and Northwestern Mutual is not only staying, they are building a new, world-class facility. The Harley-Davidson Museum, Discovery World, the Art Museum and the Public Museum, our breweries, our lakefront, our neighborhoods and all our great people – we are attracting more residents and getting recognized all over the world.”

Rebuilding our Community By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. I am somebody Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Long before the civil rights legislation of the 1960’s, there were countless men and women all across America from the time of slavery, reconstruction and Jim Crow that worked to bring about a positive change in everyday life. Many worked tirelessly as advocates in their cities and communities to ensure equal rights and social justice. This included lifting the human spirit, promoting fairness in housing, equal access to education, and pushing for employment opportunities. One such man was the late Reverend Dr. William Holmes Borders, Sr. (19051993), who was the pastor the Wheat Street Baptist Church, located in Atlanta, GA from 1937 to 1988. During his leadership he campaigned for numerous civic right causes, including those for the poor and oppressed. He was instrumental in the hiring of Atlanta’ first black police officers in the 1940’s, led campaigns to desegregate the public transportation system in the 1950’s, and established the first federally subsidized and church-operated rental housing project in the 1960’s. In addition, he led a voter registration drive in 1946 that generated 15,000 new black voters and was a charter member in the creation of the Progressive National

Scott Walker's irresponsible plan to spend projected state surplus By Urban Media News In his fourth State of the State address, Governor Scott Walker laid out an irresponsible plan to spend a projected state surplus. The announcement of a $911 million projected surplus is something that everyone likes the sounds of, but Walker’s surplus was built on the backs of children, the elderly, and the working poor. Deep cuts to public schools and job training, along with higher taxes on seniors and low-income working families in Walker’s first two budgets created the projected surplus we’re seeing today. Rational thinkers would expect to see a plan to restore the damage done to Wisconsin’s working class, but the governor has a different idea. He plans to spend our state into an $800 million structural deficit by giving away more tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the top twenty percent of Wisconsin incomes. What Walker is proposing is giving regular Wisconsinites crumbs while saving the loaf for his ultra-rich friends, another poor attempt to pay back those who fill his campaign coffers.

Instead of a political tax gimmick, what Wisconsin’s households could really use are the jobs the governor promised would come to the state if he was elected. Wisconsin continues to lag the nation in job creation, falling to 37th nationally and creating jobs at half the national average. Walker promised to create 250,000 jobs by the end of his first term, but the governor is far from reaching that goal by year’s end. The most recent public polling shows only fourteen percent of Wisconsinites think Walker will deliver on his promise by the end of the first term. During his State of the State address, Scott Walker cherrypicked economic statistics like household incomes and employer confidence, but the reality is he’s failed the state on jobs. Now, for political reasons, he’s budgeting for the future like parents paying for Christmas presents before they’ve gotten their year-end bonus -- it’s just not smart economic policy. Unemployed workers, parents of public schoolchildren, college students, and seniors don’t think it’s smart (Continued on pg. 18)

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Overcoming shame (Week 2) In an article published by Dr. Mary C. Lamia, Ph.D., titled: “Shame: A Concealed, Contagious, and Dangerous Emotion” (Psychology Today, April 2011), Dr. Lamia notes as a self-conscious emotion, shame informs you of an internal state of inadequacy, unworthiness, dishonor, or regret about which others may or may not be aware. Another person, circumstance, or situation can trigger shame in you, but so can a failure to meet your own ideals or standards whether or not they are perfectionist. Given that shame can lead you to feel as though your whole self is flawed, bad, or subject to exclusion, it makes you want to withdraw or hide yourself. So it is no wonder that shame lurks behind addictions that seek to mask its impact. In our continuation of articles on shame, Dr. Lamia will tell us more about why shame can be a concealed, contagious and dangerous emotion. If a person takes on the

lethal projections of shame from a partner-especially one who is abusive, shame can be contagious. Relocating one's own shame in another person is not unusual, and it is a typical self-protective maneuver among narcissists. A narcissistic personality who hides his shame might provoke envy in others when he is plagued with self-doubt and envy himself, or project his own shame in the form of contempt. Narcissistic personalities often have the emotion of shame at their core. Needing to hide a devalued sense of self, they can appear self-inflating. Similarly, a self-deprecating manner can easily disguise a wish for approval and restoration of pride. Always fearing a negative evaluation by others, the narcissist will devalue others, or express hostile indignation about the success of those he envies, in order to deflect the shame from which he wishes to hide. Any situation that devalues the self and triggers

shame can also trigger anger or even rage. This includes situations that incite envy, stir up comparisons, evoke a fear of abandonment, or rouse fantasies about a rival's relative happiness, among other things. The anger experienced by a person who is shamed is like an all-consuming poison and it occupies a great deal of conscious thought. But if a person who is consumed by shame manages to transfer shame to a loved one, then that person will experience its overwhelming toxic repercussions. Shame, when it is taken on by a partner or

loved one, can physically and emotionally make a person ill. Regardless of the trigger, when shame is experienced the deterioration of an esteemed sense of self can be devastating. In addition to the many emotions that can accompany shame, such as envy, anger, rage, and anxiety, we can also include the effects of sadness, depression, depletion, loneliness, and emptiness as a result. And this is where shame can become a dangerous emotion. When shame is experienced as overwhelming, it can negatively color how you view yourself and how you assess the prospect of recovering your self-esteem. Even so, people do recover from experiencing shame. Beloved, as with all emotions, Dr. Lamia notes, shame requires perspective since it is placed in the context of one's environment and current concerns. Negative interpersonal experiences that leave you feeling intense effects such as jeal-

ousy, envy, anger, or rage can alert you to the possibility of shame contagion. So you must guard against taking on shame that does not belong to you. One must always assess the inclination to hide when the emotion of shame is triggered. Hiding often accompanies behaviors that are themselves a trigger for further shame, such as addictions, compulsive behaviors, harsh self-criticism, or selfdenigration. Don't be afraid to accept responsibility for your own actions that have contributed to experiencing shame. Only then can you forgive yourself. Bulletin Board 100+ schools, including options exclusive to MPS, showcased at Enrollment Fair

Strong neighborhood, arts, CTE, IB, language immersion and Montessori schools on display for those looking for a new school for next year or coming years

Families looking for a new school for the fall – or perhaps a middle or high school in the years to come, met staff and learned about the programs available at more than 100 schools Saturday at Milwaukee Public Schools’ new All-School Enrollment Fair. The fair showcased school options for students from age 3 through high school graduation that families won’t find anywhere else in the community, including strong neighborhood schools, arts specialty schools, Career and Technical Education (CTE) schools, International Baccalaureate schools, language immersion schools and Montessori schools. Representatives of key MPS programs and services including bilingual education, College and Career Readiness, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, special education and transportation also were available for families. The All-School Enrollment Fair was held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday,

February 1 at MPS’ Milwaukee High School of the Arts, 2300 W. Highland Ave. While many families may be familiar with MPS’ high-performing specialty schools, many may not know that more MPS schools are meeting and exceeding expectations on the state report cards; that MPS’ math and reading scores grew on the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress; that MPS has added more than 90 art, music and physical education specialist positions to schools over the last two years; that more MPS students are going to college, and that MPS’ Class of 2013 earned $24 million in scholarships, up from $18 million in 2012. “We invite families from Milwaukee and surrounding communities to see the truly innovative programs available in Milwaukee Public Schools,” MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton said.

Honor student, basketball standout is 2nd player to win the honor in MPS history; 6th ever in Wisconsin Kevon Looney, a senior honor student and basketball standout at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Alexander Hamilton High School, has been named a 2014 McDonald’s All American, an honor given to just 48 boys and girls players around the country. He is the 2nd MPS student and the 6th Wisconsin student to ever achieve the honor. The 6’8” power forward’s accomplishment puts him in rare company: he’s one of two MPS students and one of only six boys and girls players from Wisconsin to ever be named an All American, a recognition given to the nation’s top high school basketball players. “It is a great honor to be selected to the McDonald’s All American Game,” Looney said. “It is something I have dreamed about my whole life. To represent my city and state is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget.” “We are honored that Kevon Looney is a part of the

Talking Health with Dr. Carter

Seeds of life! (part 5) Nature’s nutrient powerhouse

There are many quotes relating to seeds. However, this one from Genesis reflects the truth of seeds: Seeds are the genesis of life. Every healthy seed contains the spark of life. In our bodies, that “whole, fresh, and lively” vitality is translated into nutrition and energy. We eat many kinds of seeds. In reality, they are the basis of our food intake, taking the form of beans, cereal grains, pseudo-grains like quinoa and amaranth, nuts, and the small seeds we discuss here. This latter category, small seeds, has been gaining popularity among health conscious eaters over the last decade. The trend began with the popularization of the flaxseed, one of seven seeds covered in a recent issue of Nutrition News. There is only one reason – besides possible enjoyment – to integrate seeds into your life and that is nutrition. These little dynamos

are powerhouses of nutrition. Ounce per ounce, they outdo any other whole food you could name every time. Sesame Seed – “Open Sesame!” from The Arabian Nights brings us to the unexpected seed. So common – sprinkled on hamburger buns, no less – how many of us think of the lowly sesame seed as a health food? The term “open sesame” is a clue to its origins and magical properties. Sesame seed contains its own unique lignans: sesamin and sesamolin. Lignans have been shown to have cholesterol-lowering, high blood pressure regulating, and blood sugar stabilizing effects. In particular, sesamin has been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage. Recently, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (of the American Chemical Society) published the amounts of phytosterols found in

common nuts and seeds. Sesame seed showed the highest amounts. (Followed by sunflower seed and then pumpkin seed.) Remember, phytosterols are the cholesterol mimics known to reduce cholesterol, enhance immune response, and decrease the risk of certain cancers. A study in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture (of the Society of Chemical Industry, August 2008) demonstrated that both sesame seed extract and konjac gum may offer protection against different strains of the E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. The study shows that these sub-

stances act as binders with the toxic bacteria attaching themselves to the fibrous foods rather than to the gut cells of the hosts (that’s us). Petra Becker, lead researcher said that a diet rich in high fiber foods may offer protection from G-I infections or reduce the severity of symptoms caused by E. coli or Salmonella. Appropriately, Dr. Becker commented, “The importance of fiber, particularly from certain foodstuffs, in maintaining a healthy gut and digestion cannot be underestimated.” Sesame seed is thought to be one of humanity’s first condiments and surely the source of its first oil (known for its resistance to rancidity). And we love them still. Sesame seeds, plain or toasted, are tasty sprinkled on steamed veggies. Or mix veggies to be roasted with sesame seeds, plus a little oil and salt. Tahini, “sesame

butter”, is not just great on crackers but makes a wonderful salad dressing when blended with celery and lemon juice. Halvah is a delicious sesame candy. Lastly, my favorite is gamasio, Asian sesame salt. In a skillet, toast about a cup of seeds. Stay with them! When they are evenly golden, put them into the blender with some good salt. (Start with <1/8 t.) Blend briefly – until crumbly and still only slightly broken. Taste for saltiness. United Way of Greater Milwaukee has awarded a total of $70,000 in funds to two local agencies as part of its Healthy Birth Outcomes Initiative to reduce infant mortality. The program offers women in residential treatment a comprehensive smoking cession program that includes a wide variety of support. These funds represent the second cycle of funding for the program. Walker's surplus spending (Continued from pg. 4) or responsible decisionmaking either. In fact, from Milwaukee to Superior, countless residents can testify as to why they’re worse off now than before Walker took office. The projected surplus is a good thing, but it’s money we don’t yet have, and Governor Walker has failed to take a balanced approach on how those funds should be used -- ignoring not only the state’s structural deficit, but also the $93 million Medicaid and $19 million W-2 budget shortfalls. Governor Walker spun his plan as “giving the people their money back,” but the people would get much more bang for their buck if he instead focused on job creation by investing in education, job training, true tax relief for the middleclass, and reducing the $800 million structural deficit. That’s the kind of smart policy that will put real money in the hands of the working class, grow our economy, and secure our state’s future.
