Salvation Army welcomes 2017 holiday giving season with Red Kettle Kickoff

On Friday, November 3, 2017, The Salvation Army celebrated the start of the holiday giving season with their "2017 Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff" at the Milwaukee Public Market. The event was attended by community leaders, volunteers, and donors, who were treated to a hot pancake breakfast sponsored by the shops of the Public Market. This year's fundraising goal for the Red Kettle Campaign is $3.8-million, an ambitious goal, but one needed to help support more than 80 critical programs and services administered by the Salvation Army to an ever growing clientele. Pictured at the event (from left) are Greater Milwaukee Human Trafficking Task Force Chairperson Dana World Patterson; Marketing Consultant Terrell Morgan; Salvation Army Assistant Divisional Development Director Faithe Colas; Salvation Army of Wisconsin Divisional Commander Major Steven Merritt; WISN 12 News Anchor Melinda Davenport; and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Marketing and Public Relations Specialist Anthony Smith.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Defend Mama A mother is one thing we all can say we have and should cherish. We all know there is the special day in May to celebrate mother. In the African American community the mother is key to the family success. People have gone to prison defending their mothers. To talk about one's mother and call her a female dog is a challenge no person can abide. African Americans are known to rally around Mama. It is time once again for African Americans to stand for Mama. “Get that SOB off the field right now!” were President Donald Trump’s words during a speech in Alabama. Trump made the comments in response to NFL player protests of kneeling during the National Anthem. There was crying and denouncement from the NFL and the world as a whole. Players kneeled and even refused to come out of the locker room for the Anthem. The world was shocked and outraged. One half agreed with Trump about the disrespect of the flag. The other half of the

world felt Trump had gone too far. Where was the national outrage for calling the protesting players' mothers female dogs? The truth is people probably feel that isn’t what the words mean. If you are the son of a female dog then that makes your mother… well, you get the picture. I don’t know about other nationalities but in the African American community those were fighting words. You could not go out of the house to school if you let someone disrespect your mother by

calling her the B word and not do something. Yet here we are in a civilized world and people are more upset over a knee than the disrespect of the African American mother. There were NFL players who caught the gist of the statement and made rebuttals. Jared Grady’s response was perfect: “I’m a son of a Queen.” That and statements issued by other African American players show at least someone understood the slight. Yet to this day the focus of most news coverage

is on supposed disrespect of the flag or the Anthem. The blind spot in journalism is what puzzles this writer. This is why the African American community loses. African Americans never make people see the big picture as it relates to their needs. Protesting the flag or the Anthem is nothing new. White people have been burning the flag since the 1960’s. If African Americans are going to garner any level of respect they have to be able to make a stand. I am not telling the players to quit their jobs or attack Trump. I am saying use the media that make a living on NFL player lives to do what the African American community needs. The media focus should not be allowed to shift to a meaningless gesture. Keep the heat up about the disrespect of the African American mother. I hear people talking about what is going on with the NFL, politics and the world. Yet I hear very little about the level of disrespect African Americans receive. The

Trump comment is the prelude to what may be the slide into oblivion for African Americans. I still say Trump is the best thing that could happen for the USA. Trump is allowing people to be and act like their true selves. African Americans will have to adjust and understand that the party is over. Modern day slavery and exploitation is here. African Americans have to protect Mama. If there is one thing all African Americans, can rally around it is Mama. African Americans, get up off your knees and stand for Mama. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

God’s divine fruit basket (Week 2) I shall come forth like pure gold.

The Fruit of the Spirit are the dynamic gifts provided by the Holy Spirit available to every believer who is in union with Christ. (John 15:5.) They are not something to eat, but something we must possess. This series of articles is designed to encourage believers to live per the Spirit, which in turn produces godly traits [fruit] in the believer. The nine gifts available are: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. (Galatians 5:22-23.) The fruit of peace Peace is not living a life free of trouble or absent of strife. Peace is not a state of mind or a circumstance. Peace is a condition of the heart - a gift from God. It is contentment. When you know God, your life is at peace. Getting to a place of peace is not always easy. There are things in this life that upset peace. For the believer, even during those situations that threaten to stand in the way of our having peace, there is an inner calm. No matter what happens, a believer’s faith is not shaken because their soul is

If you should see me and I’m not walking right, And if you should hear me and I’m not talking right; Please remember what God has done for me, When He gets through with me, I’ll be what He wants me to be.

Jesus said “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” (John 14:27.) If you know Jesus, you will know peace. If you don’t know Jesus, there will be no peace in your life. The fruit of patience (Longsuffering) Paul reminds us that patience is a quality required for the believer (Ephesians 4:2). To be patient means that we are not easily angered. It is the capacity or habit of being patient; bearing pains or trials

without complaint. Believers need to be patient with everyone. (I Thessalonians 5:14.) Patience is difficult because it goes beyond human nature but it is a fruit we must work hard to produce. Albertina Walker penned the words to this song which sums up this week’s article on patience: Please be patient with me, God is not through with me yet. Please be patient with me, God is not through with me yet. When God gets through with me,

MPS collaborates to build 'Facilities Master Plan' Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is working to create a new Long-range Facilities Master Plan. The district seeks a new plan to align with changes that have occurred within the last five or more years in our community. Developing this plan requires an understanding of the facility implications of the education mission, goals and programs of the district as well as significant input from students, families, staff, community members and partners.

A Long-range Facilities Master Plan will provide a cost effective, actionable plan to address the shortand long-term facility needs of the district. Drafting the plan will include a comprehensive analysis of education trends, school programming, capacity, building standards, operating costs and other factors. This information will be used to allocate resources and make decisions for the long-term, best interests of our students and community.

For Principal Maurice Thomas, the attention is still sinking in. “This is the message every student needs to hear—that education is the gateway to your dreams. With all the negative messages that circulate these days, I am absolutely thrilled that we have the chance to inspire the nation in a positive way.”

Superintendent Darienne Driver congratulated the students and staff at Milwaukee Excellence. “This is one of those incredible moments when student creativity is given a platform and allowed to reach its full potential. Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve shared throughout the years. Now I am contented, That my life it was worthwhile, Knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. When you are walking down the street, And you’ve got me on your mind, I’m walking in your footsteps, Only half a step behind. So, please don’t be unhappy, Just because I’m out of sight, Remember that I’m with you, Each morning, noon and night.

IN MEMORY OF

So hold me close within your hearts, and there I will remain, to walk with you throughout your lives, until we meet again.

From Mom With Love

I see you, babies. Now mom is free—no more suffering and pain for thee. In your hearts I will always be, so when you pray, please pray for me. I journey now to go home, but from my kids I’m not gone. I’ll see you soon—it won’t be long. Know and believe I’m always there, and the Lord will never give you more than you can bear. Never question God, for now His work is done. Yes, I’m your mother, but I’m also his daughter. The way I love EMORY OF my kids, the Lord loves me. This is not what I wanted, but the way it has to be. I don’t look back on the way I lived or the things I did, for I thank the Lord for my many blessings which are my kids. For my little ones who I leave behind, no matter what road you take you will always shine. No matter where life takes you, you’re always mine. So keep my love—it’s never blind. If you keep your faith in the Lord, you will be just fine. My love will always show through the tales of time.

Seven signs you’re consuming too much sugar Sugar is hidden in so many things we eat and drink that it’s almost impossible to go through a day without consuming at least a little bit of sugar. But when you take in too much sugar it affects your blood, your organs and your overall health, leading to a number of diseases. Tired/fatigue If you’re feeling drained of energy for a prolonged period, you might be addicted to sugar. In this case, eating a small amount of sugar can give you energy, but this is only a temporary solution which will make you crave the ingredient more shortly afterwards. Frequent colds and flus Excess sugar in the body will attack and weaken the

immune system, resulting in frequent colds and the flu, as well as being more prone to various diseases. If you’re more prone to getting the sniffles, sinus issues or coughs, you might want to start eating and drinking less sugar Dark circles under your eyes/skin issues Sugar is a highly inflammatory compound which can cause numerous skin problems such as rosacea, acne, oily or dry skin and eczema. It can also be the reason for those unsightly dark circles under the eyes and can cause numerous inflammatory conditions as well. High sugar consumption has been linked to adrenal fatigue as well, which is why it’s so im-

ly attacks the liver causing inflammation and scarring. The liver injury worsens over time causing serious health problems, including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Approximately 50 percent of liver cancer cases are related to hepatitis C. Hepatitis C and the African American community According to the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975 – 2012, during 2008 through 2012, non-Hispanic blacks ages 50 to 64 years (born 1955 – 1965) had higher rates of liver cancer than other ethnic groups. And, more non-Hispanic black men die from liver cancer at an earlier age (60 to 61 years) compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Overall, data continue to show higher rates of hepatitis C and increased liver cancer rates among individuals born from 1945–1965. People born during these years are six times more likely to have hepatitis C than other adults. Current trends An estimated 3.5 million Americans are living with hepatitis C, and at least 50 percent do not know they are infected. Approximately 75 to 85 percent of people who become infected with hepatitis C develop a life-long,

chronic infection. What can we do? Because of the silent nature of the disease, a blood test is needed to identify persons infected with hepatitis C virus. To help find some of these unknown infections, CDC and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a one-time hepatitis C test for all persons born from 1945– 1965 regardless of race or ethnicity. Early detection, care, and treatment can save lives. Testing is the only way to know if someone has hepatitis C. If detected early, new treatments are available that can cure 90 percent of hepatitis C infected persons who complete therapy. Fortunately, these new treatments are safe and have few side-effects. Once diagnosed, most persons with hepatitis C can be cured in just 8 to 12 weeks, reducing liver cancer risk by 75 percent. Much like HIV, it is imporatnt to know your hepatitis C status. The CDC encourages individuals to share information about hepatitis C, get tested, encourage testing for others, and learn more about treatment. Together we can help stop the hepatitis C virus and save lives.

Portable space heater safety tips for seniors With the cost of running a central heat system skyrocketing, many seniors turn to space heaters to heat their homes in winter. They can lower your energy bills by adding direct warmth to the rooms you use most. But while these portable heaters can be both efficient and economical, there is a downside. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) estimates these types of heaters are involved in thousands of fires each year resulting in deaths, injuries and millions of dollars in property loss.
