North Division High School Alumni host a 'Noble Glorious' Celebration On Saturday, November 4, 2017, North Division Alumni Association hosted a tribute to two outstanding retired educators of North Division High School, Sarah L. Grant-Rowe and Arlene Skwierawski. The event was held at North Division High School's Auditorium, 1011 West Center Street, and was a celebration of dance and music to honor two teachers who have made a great impact on many students that have passed through North Division. The celebration was also a fundraiser to help North Division seniors with a one-time scholarship. Pictured at the event are (from left) Congresswoman and North Division alumni Gwen Moore; and honorees Arlene Skwierawski and Sarah L. Grant-Rowe.

On Thursday, November 9, 2017, University of Wisconsin- Stout, and Alverno College student organizations Black Student Alliance, CHICA and YES presented an evening with America's Black Holocaust Museum Head Griot Reggie Jackson for his presentation, "Liberty for All! African American Civil Liberties in Milwaukee." The discussion, which was free and open to the public, looked at the struggles of African Americans in Milwaukee to attain those basic civil liberties that we assume are the rights of all Americans and using historical perspective to see how much further they still have to go. Originally founded in 1984 by the late Dr. James Cameron, the Black Holocaust is expected to reopen in the summer of 2018 in a new building at 4th Street and North Avenue. Pictured are (from left) University of Wisconsin - Stout English and Philosophy Department Professor Dr. Tim Shiell; Reggie Jackson; and Alverno College Professor Russell Booker. NBC News: Defying the odds, African Americans make historic wins on election night A large number of black candidates claimed victory in state and local races across the country Tuesday, Novemvber 7, 2017 night — results widely hailed as a reaction to President Donald Trump and Republican policies in general. And voters of color were buoyed by both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and grassroots organizations that poured resources into turning out the party's all-important base. “Undoubtedly a cornerstone of our party, black voters surged to the polls in a tremendous way, set the tone for future elections, and paved the way for government that truly represents them,” said Amanda Brown Lierman, political and organizing director for the DNC, in a statement. One of the most closely watched races in the country was the contentious gubernatorial battle in Virginia, which pitted Democrat Ralph Northam against Trump-endorsed Republican Ed Gillespie in a contest filled with allegations of race-baiting and attack ads. According to NBC News exit polls, 87 percent of African Americans in Virginia voted for Northam, compared to 88 percent who voted for Hillary Clinton. Ninety-one percent of African American women also voted for Northam. Northam emerged the victor and the number two man on his ticket — Justin Fairfax, who is black — is the new lieutenant governor-elect. Fairfax now has the distinction of being just the second African American elected to statewide office in Virginia, decades after Doug Wilder was elected governor in 1989. DNC officials said the party invested $1.5 million in Virginia to help secure wins. They also courted African American voters. For instance, Brown Lierman said that since last summer, the party has been committed to spending on a mail program that reaches out to black communities. In Virginia, where African Americans make up about a fifth of the commonwealth’s electorate, the DNC said 100 percent of its investments went into doubling the number of organizers. Officials said they also invested in a black women’s mobilization program, called InCharge. “Yesterday in Virginia, over 90 percent of black women cast ballots for Governor Ralph Northam,” said Brown Lierman. In another race watched nationally, veteran lawmak-

Justin Fairfax, the new lieutenant governorelect, is the second African American elected to statewide office in Virginia.

Sheila Oliver was elected the first African American lieutenant governor of New Jersey.

Vi Lyles became Charlotte, North Carolina's first African American female mayor.

Andrea Jenkins is the first openly transgender African American woman elected to public office in the U.S.

Wilmot Collins, a Liberian-born immigrant, became the first African American mayor in Helena, Montana in modern times.

Yvonne Spicer, first mayor of the newly incorporated city of Framingham, Massachusetts.

Melvin Carter is the first African American mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Booker Gainor, 27 is Cairo, Georgia's first black millennial mayor.

er Sheila Oliver, 65, was elected the first African American lieutenant governor of New Jersey. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Vi Lyles, 66, became the city’s first African American female mayor. The former assistant city manager garnered some 58 percent of the vote. Kimberly Peeler-Allen and Glynda Carr are co-founders of Higher Heights for America, an organization that works to elect black women to office. African American women have historically voted in significant numbers, they noted, and in 2016, their influence helped increase the number of black women in Congress. The numbers rose by three to 21 — that includes Sen. Kamala Harris, only the second black woman elected to the Senate in U.S. history. “Black women are running and winning. They seek to change the face of leadership in executive offices and to move this country forward in this political toxic environment,” said Peeler-Allen. Meanwhile, a host of other African American candidates won local and statewide races in major cities and small towns across the country.

Some races were historic. Andrea Jenkins won a seat on Minneapolis City Council, becoming the first openly transgender African American woman elected to public office in the U.S. Another noteworthy win occurred in Montana, where Wilmot Collins, a Liberian-born immigrant, became the first African American mayor in Helena in modern times; reportedly there was a black mayor in 1874. At least seven cities elected African Americans mayor in Tuesday’s election: Yvonne Spicer, first mayor of the newly incorporated city of Framingham, Massachusetts; Melvin Carter, mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota; Mary Parham Copelan, mayor of Milledgeville, Georgia (she beat the incumbent by just six votes); and Booker Gainor, millennial mayor of Cairo, Georgia. In Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, an African American Council member, will face off against Mary Norwood, a white colleague, on Dec. 5 to determine the city’s next mayor. “When we fully fund and support black candidates, we

can win ... there is no lack of talent in our community and geography isn't an issue,” said political strategist James Quentin, co-founder of The Collective Pac, which funds campaigns of progressive black candidates across the country. Brown Lierman of the DNC echoed a similar senti-

ment. “With their ballots, the African American communities across the nation sent a loud, resounding message to Republicans who hold water for Donald Trump and try to use his hateful rhetoric as a vehicle for political success — you do not represent us.”

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

God’s divine fruit basket (Week 3) In Galatians 5, Paul draws a stunning contrast between the Christian who lives in the fruit of the spirit and the non-believer who lives by the fruit of the flesh. In this first part, Paul describes people that are out of control. This “bad fruit,” which originates with the sinful nature, is described as sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissension, factions, envy, drunkenness, and the like. These vices include sexual sins, religious sins, societal sins, and sins associated with alcohol. A person, declared

Paul, who lives continually on such a level of moral corruption, demonstrates that he/she is not a child of God. The believer is admonished to produce the “good fruit” that is an outgrowth of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. The fruit of kindness The word used in Galatians 5 means "useful, fit for use", but it has derivative meanings of "useful for others, kind, pleasant and having integrity in relationship with others." Since one of God’s attributes is His acts of kindness or mercy, the believer

gift. Since fruit is the character of Christ, then it becomes a privilege for every believer to bear fruit.

also is to be kind. Being kind is part of being holy, a mark of what makes the Spirit-led person different from others. Show kindness to someone you meet this week. As believers produce the fruit of kindness and show that kindness to others, it gives others a taste of God’s love. The fruit of goodness This fruit is not just “doing” good things. If “goodness” is just about doing good deeds or good works, almost everyone would be labeled as producing the fruit of goodness. Even ungodly people have done good things at some point

in their life. We are exhorted "to walk worthy of the Lord unto all well-pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work." (Colossians 1:10.) This passage shows how closely bearing fruit is linked with good works, yet clearly distinguishes between them. The good works are to be done in such a Christ-like manner that in the works that benefit man, there will be found fruit acceptable to God. The natural man can do many good works, but in these works, there will be no fruit that is acceptable to God. If service and work were fruit, it would be limited to those who possess that

for fulfilling opportunities. Continuing within the same profession part-time or taking on related consulting work could be the most financially rewarding route, if it's an option. Alternatives such as customer service positions with a retailer are popular among some retirees. There are also internet-based jobs that allow you to work from home. Social Security could be your sole source of income.

Retirees who don't have a pension or savings and stop working may find that Social Security is their only income. Your Social Security benefit depends on when you were born, how much you've paid into the program, when you start to take benefits and whether or not you're eligible for a government pension. Once you start receiving benefits, you'll lock in your monthly amount, although it will adjust to account for inflation. Therefore, deciding

when to start taking Social Security benefits is important, as it can impact your income for the rest of your life. Claiming benefits once you reach your full or normal retirement age, 65 to 67 depending on when you were born, is when you'll receive 100 percent of your monthly Social Security benefit. Taking benefits early can lock in a lower rate, while waiting can increase the monthly benefit. In 2017, if you're eligible for the maximum benefit and start claiming at 62, you'll receive about $2,153 per month. If you waited until you were 70 this year, you'll receive about $3,538 per month. You can use the SSA's Retirement Age Calculator to see how taking Social Security early, or waiting, can affect your benefit. You might have to downsize and make lifestyle changes. Moving to an area that has a significantly lower cost of living could mean the difference between living with financial challenges and having a comfortable retirement. Some people look for less expensive areas close to family members or even an expat community in a different country.

If you decide to stay in the same area, a smaller home can lower your property taxes and maintenance costs. You can also take any profits from the sale of a larger home and pay off debts or build an investment portfolio. Housing aside, there are many ways to downsize your lifestyle, such as selling a vehicle, shopping at secondhand stores and cutting back on monthly entertainment expenses. One helpful part of aging is you'll be eligible for all sorts of new discounts and benefits. Look online for lists of stores or organizations that offer senior discounts. You can use the National Council on Aging BenefitsCheckUp to see which benefits you might be eligible for based on your ZIP code and personal information. Bottom line: Many aging Americans don't have enough savings to fund their lifestyle through retirement. Deciding when to take Social Security benefits and where to live are two of the most pressing questions on the horizon. No matter what you choose, you may need to supplement your income with part-time work and look for ways to significantly lower your cost of living to enjoy retirement.

The picture of retirement that many of us have is a post-work period filled with travel and plenty of relaxation. It's a time when you can finally take up a new hobby, sink into the pile of books and enjoy more time with family and friends. What does retirement look like if you haven't saved? The reality is that many haven't been able to save enough money to enjoy this idealized retirement. What might their retirement look like? You may be working for longer than you expected. Many people undergo a period of "phased retirement" and either reduce their hours or start a new part-time job after retiring from a full-time schedule. Even those who don't have a financial need may find that they value the activity and connections work brings to their lives. Without savings, continuing to work might not be a choice, but you can still look

The Christmas budget you've always wanted In the classic Christmas movie Home Alone, Kevin McCallister made a blueprint for how he was going to take down the intruders in his house. He knew all he needed to outsmart the Wet Bandits was a plan of attack. A little glue here, some glass ornaments there—and a couple of swinging paint cans for good measure. What’s our point here? Well, just like Kevin McCallister, you need a plan. And a Christmas budget is that plan. It will lead you to success, but only if you follow it! While it’s perfectly okay to spend extra money around the holidays, you don’t want to end up with the unwelcome gift of credit card debt come Christmas morning. That’s why you need a Christmas budget. Creating the right Christmas budget really starts with having the right household budget in place. We recommend using a zero-based budget for that. Here’s a quick refresher: What is a zero-based budget? The concept of a zero-based budget is simple: Income minus outgo equals zero. If you earn $3,000 a month, you want every dollar you spend, save, give, or invest to all add up to $3,000. That way you know where every one of your dollars is going. How to create your Christmas budget 1. Take a look at what you spent on Christmas last year. Let’s go ahead and address the question on everyone’s mind: How do you figure out your Christmas budget? Take a look at what you spent on Christmas last year. Was it too little, or too much? This is where our free EveryDollar app really shines. Start by plugging in your normal monthly expenses like gas, utilities, insurance and groceries. Then, enter your more flexible spending budget groups, like dining out and fun money. What’s left? Will that be enough for Christmas? If not, you may have to adjust some of that flexible spending to make it

get. Plus, if that Douglas Fir goes on sale or you throw a potluck to cut back on groceries, you’ll have more money to splurge on your loved ones. 3. Write down who you need to buy gifts for. Since you know exactly how much you can spend on gifts, decide who gets what. Make a list of everyone you’ll buy for this year. And we mean everyone—coworkers, church friends, parents, kids, grandkids. Next to each name (or category, if you’re budgeting a treat for the office), write a specific dollar amount. If you don’t have enough money to cover everyone on your list, rethink how much you’ll spend on each person. Maybe you can agree to only buy for the kids. Or perhaps you can draw names instead of buying for multiple families. And baked goods or homemade crafts are always on the table! Who doesn’t love a gift that comes fresh

Christmas now! We recommended setting up a Christmas fund using EveryDollar. It’s easy! Simply log in to EveryDollar from a desktop computer and click the "make this a fund" feature. Once you’ve determined the total you want to spend on Christmas, divide it by the number of weeks left until Christmas. If your budget is $600, save $100 a week for the next six weeks. EveryDollar will track how much you’re saving and how much more you need to save to meet your goal. In mid-December, your Christmas savings will be fully funded and you can enjoy the season instead of feeling pinched for extra money. Does this really work? Yes! Having a budget (your detailed spending plan) is the quickest way to make your money goals a reality. Saving for Christmas? You need a budget! Trying to get out of debt? You need a budget. Saving for retirement? You need a budget. Already a millionaire? Guess what—you still need a budget. Remember, you’re the boss of your own budget. You get to tell every single dollar exactly where it will go each month. And don’t think of it as confining. Having a budget actually gives you the freedom to spend money! Who doesn’t love that? Especially during the holly, jolly Christmas season.

work. If you typically spend $300 on restaurants in a month, why not cook a few extra meals at home and stash an extra $200 toward Christmas savings? Or if your fun money is sitting pretty at $150 a month, why not hold off (temporarily) and put an extra $100 into your Christmas fund? Smart budgeting now can free up more money for what you want later—like Christmas presents! 2. Divide your Christmas budget into categories. Of course, gifts are usually the largest Christmas budget expense (unless you’re decking out your house Clark Griswold-style). Just remember you need to budget for all things Christmas—including decorations, wrapping paper, travel, festive meals, charitable donations, and anything else you’re planning to do over the holidays. Once you’ve figured out how much you can spend on Christmas, do some simple math. Take your number— let’s say $500—and think over your seasonal expenses. You’ll need money for travel ($50), a tree and trimmings ($70), a few potluck parties ($30), and some extra giving ($50). Then there’s the big one: Christmas gifts ($300). Make a goal amount and stick to it! You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can pile up a stash of cash when you just make a point to save. Now that you have your Christmas budget all set, you know how much you’ll need to add to your Christmas fund. As long as you plan where your money will go before you spend it, there’s no right or wrong way to split up your Christmas bud-

out of the oven or straight from the heart? 4. Track your spending. So how do you know if you’re sticking to your budget? You have to make a point to track every single expense. A $5 overage in one category might not be the end of the world, but it’s not going to be pretty if you do that in several categories throughout the month. And don’t wait until the end of the month to add up all those Christmas receipts. By then, it could be too late and you might be way over budget. Try to track the expense as soon as you make the purchase. Our EveryDollar app makes that super easy. You can do it on the go right from your phone. 5. Consider using cash. If you haven’t used cash to pay for Christmas presents since 1985, it’s time to tap into the You of Christmas Past. If you know you’re prone to overspending when it comes to Christmas, make a point to set aside cash only to pay for all the Christmas things. Make separate envelopes for decorations, festive food, gifts, and anything else you plan on spending money on this Christmas. 6. Plan ahead with a Christmas fund. You know Christmas is in December every year, so there’s no reason to act like it suddenly snuck up on you. Start putting away money for

Easy recipes for your first Thanksgiving Day feast By William Scott Gooden Special for the Milwaukee Times So after all these years of Mom being the one to host Thanksgiving dinner, she has decided this year to hang up her apron and let someone else take over. Graciously you volunteer your lovely home to host your parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and their assorted significant others and offspring. You have cleaned and decorated your home in such a warm and tasteful way, that it would make Martha Stewart herself beam with pride. You have armed yourself with every Thanksgiving-related kitchen and serving implement suggested by the Food Network. But there is still one problem. You have never made a turkey meal that didn't involve sliced turkey, cheese, lettuce, bread and mayonnaise. The solution: you need some real easy-to-follow recipes that will still "wow" your family. Here are some dishes that will make you the hero of this year's Thanksgiving, but won't kill you in the process.
