The Milwaukee Urban League Guild and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Grade School celebrated the Read Across America Day campaign on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Local business and community leaders, students, and parents volunteered to read with school children. The event was kicked off with special appearances from Mayor Tom Barrett, MPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton, Milwaukee Urban League president and CEO Ralph Hollmon (left photo).

Vel Phillips celebrates 90th Birthday with Common Council Milwaukee political pioneer and civil rights icon Vel Phillips marked her 90th birthday on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 surrounded by a generation of local politicians who succeeded her in office. Vel was the first female and African American to serve on the Milwaukee Common Council. She was the first female African American judge appointed to the county court and elected Wisconsin Secretary of State. Wishing her well are (from left) Common Council members José G. Pérez; Ashanti Hamilton; retired Common Council president Willie Hines, Jr.; Willie C. Wade; Milele A. Coggs; and Joe Davis, Sr. Since leaving elective politics Vel has remained active in the community by serving on a number of committees and boards. She has also been honored as "Distinguished Professor of Law" at the Marquette University School of Law. In recent years the Milwaukee County Juvenile Court Building and a residence hall at UW-Madison have been named in her honor. Staff Photo
AACC luncheon explores 'passion for success in business' The African American Chamber of Commerce hosted its Women in Business Luncheon on Friday, March 7, 2014. The keynote address was presented by Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, Eloise Anderson. Ms. Anderson is one of the highest ranking African Americans in Governor Scott Walker’s administration. Anderson began her career in Milwaukee as a social worker addressing issues supporting children's rights. Pictured are local women business leaders along with (seated from left) AACC president and CEO Dr. Eve Hall; Secretary Eloise Anderson, and AACC board member Wanda Montgomery.
