4,000 pairs (and counting) collected in used shoe drive When 10-year-old Steven Tipton, II, traveled with his parents to Haiti recently, he was shocked by the level of widespread poverty and disease he witnessed and thought about how he and his family could help the situation. He came up with the idea of collecting used shoes, repairing them and sending them back to Haitian people in need. Wearing shoes is one way to stem the spread of disease-carrying parasites that people pick up there by going barefoot. Recently, young Steve was joined by members of the Cream City Chapter of the Links, Inc., UWM associates, and family, including his father Pastor Steven Tipton, at the Milwaukee Times office to pick up hundreds of pair of shoes that had been dropped off there. Pictured are Don Harris, Mateba Harris, Dave Harris, Lennie Mosley, Felicia Lynn, Pauli Taylorboyd, Janaya Riley, and Milwaukee Times publisher Lynda Jackson Conyers. The goal is to collect at least 5,000 pairs of shoes by the end of March.

Milwaukee native breaks barriers as first black, female president of 'Harvard Lampoon'

Alexis Wikinson Alexis Wilkinson is living history. As the first African American to be at the helm of the "Harvard Lampoon" since its creation in 1876, the junior has sparked even more conversation about diversity in an industry both African Americans and women have struggled to break into. The staff of the Ivy League's iconic humor publication boasts an impressive list of alumni who have gone on to make their mark in comedy, including Conan O'Brien, Andy Borowitz and B.J. Novak. But since its founding in 1876, the magazine has never had a black president. Until Wilkinson arrived. The Milwaukee native and economics major credited her family and upbringing for both inspiring her humor and catapulting her to the historic university. "I have a whole family full of very loud, funny women," she said. Wilkinson's achievement comes at a time when many are criticizing the media in-

dustry for its lack of diversity. After coming under fire, "Saturday Night Live" recently added comedian Sasheer Zamata to their on screen staff, and also added two black females to their staff of writers -- a facet of the industry Wilkinson said fewer people pay attention to, but one she hopes to address in the future. "As a writer, I think we pay a lot of attention to the performance aspect of comedy," she said during an interview with NPR. "But as far as the number of performers go, there's way more gender and race equality in performance of comedy than there has ever been in writing. Like, no one is paying attention to the fact that, like, there are absolutely, like, no people of color writing for - and, like, shows - a lot of shows that are predominately black don't have any writers of color in the writers room. And to me, that's insane, like, it's 2013. And so those are the sort of things that I get more riled up about."

Republicans put Wisconsinites voting rights in the crosshairs

By Urban Media News

Last week, Republicans in Wisconsin put voting rights square in their crosshairs, passing restrictions to end early voting on weekends and pullback early voting hours during the week. The move was Republicans' second successful attack on early voting since cutting the voting window in half in 2011. The partisan bill has the pungent stench of partisan politics, a strategy aimed at keeping voters at home in order to win elections and remain in power. Leaders all across the state including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett have panned the bill for its obvious intentions. While Republicans argue their restrictions level the playing field for voters in rural areas their arguments of fairness breakdown when you compare 2012 early voting totals. In an editorial featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Mayor Barrett breaks down

how the bill will affect Wisconsin communities. Barrett writes “In 2012, in the city of West Bend, 4,245 people voted in-person absentee in the presidential election. With the proposed restriction limiting early voting to 90 hours in a two-week period, West Bend would still have just about a minute and a half to work with each voter. That seems pretty fair. Menasha would have almost two full minutes per voter. Oconomowoc would have four minutes per voter. With the restriction to one site per municipality, and 36,349 early voters, the city of Milwaukee would have nine seconds per voter.” Democratic leaders aren’t the only ones stepping up to criticize the law. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Urban Milwaukee, Beloit Daily News, and the Appleton Post Crescent have all panned recent voter suppression efforts waged by Scott Walker and state Republicans. The Journal Sentinel exposed

the intent behind Senate Republicans' maneuvers last week as “suppressing the Democratic vote in Milwaukee and Madison, where many of the state’s people of color live. It’s a highly partisan bill that harkens back to an era when voting was made much harder by strict poll laws for certain groups of people. On that basis alone, Gov. Scott Walker should veto the bill.” Walker should veto the bill, but the odds are very unlikely as the Governor exposed his own voter suppression agenda last week. Adding to the assault on Wisconsin democracy, Scott Walker

Think Progress

Paul Ryan blames poverty on lazy ‘inner city’ men By Igor Volsky House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) previewed his upcoming legislative proposals for reforming America’s poverty programs during an appearance on Bill Bennett’s Morning in America Wednesday, March 5, 2014, hinting that he would focus on creating work requirements for men “in our inner cities” and dealing with the “real culture problem” in these communities. Ryan then went on to cite Charles Murray, a conservative social scientist who believes African Americans are, as a population, less intelligent than whites due to genetic differences and that poverty remains a national problem because “a lot of poor people are born lazy.” Ryan’s comments come a week after he released a 204page report analyzing the effectiveness of the nation’s anti-poverty programs 50 years after President Lyndon Johnson declared a national War on Poverty. The former GOP vice presidential candidate, who argues that federal anti-poverty programs have contributed to the nation’s high poverty rate and “created what’s known as the poverty trap,” is expected to offer reforms to the programs in his upcoming FY 2015 budget. “[W]e want people to reach their potential and so the

Paul Ryan dignity of work is very valuable and important and we have to re-emphasize work and reform our welfare programs, like we did in 1996,” Ryan told Bennett. “We have got this tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning to value the culture of work, so there is a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with.” Numerous anti-poverty initiatives already include work requirements, particularly long-term unemployment insurance and the Earned Income Tax Credit. Other programs, such as Head Start, allow parents to go to work while their children attend education programs. Work requirements have

yet to significantly reduce poverty, particularly during a downturn economy. While Ryan touts the success of lowering the number of people on welfare after 1996, poverty has actually increased since the recession and the number of families whose incomes are below half the poverty line (less than $12,000 a year for a family of four) is actually higher now than it was when Congress and President Bill Clinton enacted welfare reform. Welfare’s rigid work requirements improved employment among single mothers initially, but those rates started to decline by 2001, once the economy went into recession. The work provisions also pressure some women to abandon the higher education that could lead to upward mobility in favor of lower-paying jobs that meet the law’s standards. But Ryan is prepared to double down on the welfare reforms of the mid-90s. “When you question this war on poverty, you get all the criticisms from adherents to the status quo who just don’t want to see anything change,” Ryan said. “We got to have the courage to face that down, just as we did in the welfare reform of the late 1990s and if we succeeded we can help resuscitate this culture and get people back to work.”

made it clear last week that he will call for a special session to pass Voter ID once it is deemed unconstitutional by federal court or the State Supreme Court. Gov. Walker signed the Voter ID into law in May 2011 and it was almost immediately challenged in court. Aside from an open admission that the law is unconstitutional, Walker’s prioritization of calling a special session to rewrite voting laws highlights his disinterest with actual governing versus nonstop electioneering. Despite the “open for business” signs that littered

the state after his election, Wisconsin has fallen from 11th to 37th in national job growth rankings since Scott Walker has taken office. Republicans’ real focus seems to be getting re-elected and holding on to power, even if winning comes at the expense of disenfranchising thousands of students, veterans, people of color, people with disabilities, and people with low-incomes. Our political leaders shouldn’t be making it harder to vote in order to fix elections. Winning fair and square on the merits of ideas is how elections should be done. Instead of changing the rules of the game, Scott Walker and state Republicans should play fair and spend the last few weeks of the legislative session fixing real problems, putting their money where their mouth is, and working to improve the economic security of Wisconsin’s working class.

Paul Ryan doesn't represent America By Rev. Al Sharpton President, National Action Network It's easy to attack and demagogue those who don't have a voice. It's easy to blame others when you fail to provide true leadership. And it's easy to reinforce stereotypes and misconceptions to win elections, or to win over your party's base. That is precisely what Republican Rep. Paul Ryan did last week when he made despicable comments regarding inner cities, and inner-city men in particular. Discussing a "tailspin of culture" of "men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value of work," Ryan insulted generations of men and women who rise early every morning for an honest day's work, or to look for work. Whether or not Ryan believes his own deplorable statements doesn't matter; it's the fact that he feels the need to utter them that should make us all very worried. 2014 is another pivotal year. The midterm elections -- the outcome of which will determine what direction the nation heads -- are around the corner. Do we want to keep progressing forward, or do we want to revert back to a time when culture wars and scapegoating were the norm? Based on his own comments and actions, it would appear that Ryan would like to do the latter. Referencing Charles Murray, co-author of The Bell Curve, a book that called blacks inferior and was widely viewed as racist, Ryan

Rev. Al Sharpton knew exactly what he was doing. Using code words like "inner-city" and "culture," he sent subliminal messages to an audience he was clearly trying to cater to. How can the House Budget Committee Chairman not be held accountable for such despicable words? He knew better, or rather, he knew exactly what he was doing. Blaming the "inner city," blacks, or minorities in general for society's ills is nothing new. Whether it was Reagan's "welfare queen" or more modern covert phrases/actions like Ryan's, it is beyond tired and played-out. Why don't we actually try taking a look at real facts for a change? Approximately 17.7 percent of people living in non-metropolitan areas are in poverty, as compared with 14.5 percent of those in metropolitan areas. According to the USDA, that means about 8.5 million people in non-metro areas live in poverty. That is the unfortunate reality. While I never condone blaming the poor or impoverished, let's not act (Continued on pg. 4)

Sharpton: Ryan doesn't represent America

Saving our daughters In the midst of all the attention being focused on what is occurring to young black men involved in gangs and the criminal justice system in particular, many in our community have also lost sight of what is happening to our young black girls. In most cases they go unnoticed, overlooked or just taken for granted; and to say they will be OK, is not fair to them. If we take a closer look, our young black daughters are paying a high price in terms of their identity, self-esteem, education opportunities, dreams and future. They are being lost in the shuffle of this new age that is being dominated by far right or far left interests. They are feeling the pressure that comes from racism, sexism, prejudice, poverty and indifference. Their value in this society is clouded by the views of others and even by how they see themselves through the lifestyles and the treatment of their mothers. From those viewpoints, many young black sisters are struggling to find their place in a complex world that is controlled and dominated by men. To make their life more difficult is the fact that many of them are growing up and dealing with absentee fathers and mothers, many of whom are impacted by drug

addiction and incarceration. Some are being raised in the ever expanding foster care system and in many cases being separated from their sib- of young black girls. (Continued from pg. 3) like it is confined to the inner city. Instead of trying to blame the boogeyman, Ryan should maybe try to create or pass programs that assist those desperately looking for work -- many in his home state of Wisconsin. When I was growing up in the borough of Brooklyn, every single morning I saw men (and women) scraping ice and snow from their cars to make it to work, or to look for work. I saw people rising before dawn to run to trains and head into their first job -- yes, first job. My entire life, I have seen men and women in the "inner city" work tirelessly to provide for their families and make ends meet. So when Ryan, an elected official, makes these sorts of outrageous comments, he is insulting every hard-working

American who sacrifices day in and day out while he goes on a radio show and spews this nonsense. The point is not whether he believes his own misrepresentations and vitriol but where we are in this country. Why do people like Ryan and so many others feel the need to pander to others who hold these type of ignorant and biased views? I often discuss the tremendous progress we have made in this nation. And make no mistake: We have. But until vicious and divisive comments from our representatives and those in power are eliminated from the conversation, our work isn't done. It's not enough for Ryan to meet with the Congressional Black Caucus; that won't erase his mentality or the mentality he is trying to win over. It is up to us, those that believe in peaceful movements and progressive change, to keep pushing forward. We must ensure that we vote this year, and we must elect individuals who know how to lead and not incite hatred. That is the America we want.

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Has your spiritual growth ever felt stuck in neutral? (Week 3) May I ask you a few questions? Are you experiencing spiritual stagnation? Have you grown much spiritually? Have you become comfortable with your spiritual walk with the Lord? This month we are addressing the topic of spiritual growth. Each week, we are including responses from our readers to the question: “Has Your Spiritual Growth Ever Felt Stuck In Neutral?” This week, my son, Justin gives us his thoughts on this subject. Justin responds: "I believe sometimes because we are afraid of what God is trying to do in our lives, WE put our own growth on standstill OR shift our focus off of where we are going because we are afraid of two things: "First, we are afraid that we just might be that anointed. We are afraid that we might have all of the spirit and anointing that God has im-

parted into us so we stop because we like where we are although we feel we have exhausted all of our resources in that place. God did not move anyone from a place until they did everything they needed to do there. Look at Jesus, Paul, Peter...God had them exhaust everything in that place before they left. "Secondly, we are afraid of the storms we have to face when we get to that next level. We like a God who gives us something, but we know that "something" will cost us something, and that's scary. We don't want another storm that will afflict us or something that will make us come face-to-face with hurt and pain. "One’s spiritual growth is only put in neutral when we shift to it. You are in control of your spiritual gears and thus you can shift back to drive and go forward. I

What’s Happening?

Friends of the Milwaukee Times generously donate shoes to help families in Haiti

Staff Photos

Pictured are just some of the many generous individuals that have donated shoes for families in Haiti, Kenya, and Honduras. The shoe drive is less than a thousand pairs away from its goal; we know with your generosity it can be surpassed. The shoe drive will be extended to the end of the month so that they can hopefully exceed their goal. Again we thank everyone who has contributed pairs of used shoes for this cause. If you are interested in making a donation you can drop shoes off at our offices at 1936 North Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, or call (414) 263-5088.

Bulletin Board Dozens of students sleep outside for a good cause during 14th Box City at MPS’ Riverside University High School For the 14th year, students at Milwaukee Public Schools’ Riverside University High School slept outside to raise money for Habitat for Humanity and raise awareness about homelessness. Last year, students raised $3,000 for the cause. Over the past 13 years, Riverside’s “Box City” has raised more than close to $70,000 and resulted in the construction of two Habitat homes. Student organizers hoped to add to that total. Students set up boxes around 5 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014. Those involved took part in simulations and talks that helped them understand the difficulties of those who live without

a home. The students were prepared for the temperatures, but would come inside if safety was an issue. Boxes were set up by approximately 7 p.m. and students woke up at approximately 6 a.m. For Senior Jasmine Dieringer, this year’s event was her third Box City. The RUHS student body vice president said she gets involved “because of the message it sends — the message it brings to our community” about homelessness and poverty. “The most powerful thing is seeing the support from the school community for the cause,” Dieringer said. Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Eleven fast food items restaurant employees won’t even eat

With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Sure, we all know that fast food isn’t that good for us, but how bad is it really? We recently came across this list where a group of employees from various fast food restaurants confessed the menu items they would never eat due to their inside knowledge. See some of the most shocking below. Hot dogs at baseball stadiums “They made it out of the package okay, and might even have been edible after we finished grilling them – and then they went into the water. We kept three pans of water at the back of the grill that held the hot dogs. Any hot dogs left at the end of the day went back into the fridge, and came out again the next day. Me and the other cook put our feet down on throwing out the water and

old hotdogs after two full days, but the management didn’t want to let us.” Steak and beans at Taco Bell “I worked at Taco Bell a little bit ago and I warn everyone to stay away from both the beans, and the steak. The beans start out looking like cat food, and the directions are, ‘Add water and stir until you can’t see white anymore.’ The steak was just the worst on dish duty. If it would sit too long it would become like hair gel. It was the worst.” Chili from Wendy’s “I used to work at Wendy’s. The meat used in the chili,

yeah that comes from the meat on the grill top that expires and dries up that’s put in to a warming drawer until you have enough for a batch of chili, which we first freeze and then thaw the next day. Also if the chili sitting in the warmer doesn’t sell fast enough we just added hot water to it to mix it up.” Movie theater popcorn “I worked at a theater, don’t get popcorn for the first showing- that’s all just last night’s popcorn put into giant garbage bags and then reheated in the warmers in the morning. Oh yeah and remember that sticky floor in

Eight reasons the Affordable Care Act deadline matters to African Americans March 31, 2014, is the deadline to enroll in health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), which expands the options for affordable coverage and provides financial assistance for those who qualify. For African Americans, this date is critical. “March 31 could be the most important deadline of your life if you are African American,” says Dr. Robert Winn, associate vice president for community based practice at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. “African Americans carry a disproportionate burden of disease,” says Winn. “They have some of the highest rates of diabetes and hypertension and carry the heaviest burden of cancer compared to other racial groups. If you are African American, there’s an overwhelming chance that you’ll be affected by disease. Enrolling in health insurance through the Affordable Care Act is an opportunity that just cannot be missed.” Under the ACA, Americans that don’t sign up for health insurance by the March 31 deadline will pay a penalty on their 2014 income taxes. Beyond the tax penalty, here are eight reasons why

the aisle of the theater? Well what do you think would happen if you had that at your house. YES THAT’S HOW YOU GET ANTS… and cockroaches, and everything else. Plus it’s in the dark most of the time. It’s like a bug buffet once the lights go out and the movie starts.” Pasta at Panera “Panera- pasta; it’s all microwaved, this includes Mac and cheese. Smoothies/frozen drinks- nasty base crap that smells and it’s sticky. Cupcakes/coffee cakes- all come frozen. Best items are the real sandwich/ salads. Real ingredients and usually fresh.” Beans at Taco Johns “Taco Johns reporting for all you midwesterners. I would steer clear of the beans, at least outside of peak hours, because they sit on the hot table for a long long time and when they dry out, just add water. Everything else is pretty solid though. Worked there a couple years back in 2007-2009 and still love going back to get my fix.” BBQ sandwiches at KFC “Worked at KFC for ~4 years. The BBQ sandwich is

actually made from chicken too old and stale to give to the homeless shelters, so they soak it in BBQ sauce until it can be pulled and then they keep it on the heater for a month. I still order it though.” Eggs at Einstein’s Bagels “I worked at Einstein’s bagel place which is basically fast food. Don’t order anything with eggs, they aren’t real eggs and if business is slow they could have been sitting in a container for hours after they are microwaved.” Slurpees at gas stations “Gas station slurpee’s. The amount of mold in those machines would crush your childhood to a pulp.”

Celebrating Women's History Month

THE PUBLISHER'S BOOKSHELF Books for Women's History Month (part 2) By Lynda Jackson Conyers tured love among the African Publisher for the Milwaukee American elite. Times Women's History Month is an annual dedicated month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. This week's selection of books depicts the struggle for freedom, dignity and justice of women whose lives were true stories. This classical literature stands as landmarks of history as seen through the eyes of women with courage and hope.

Life Lessons My Mother Taught Me By Andrea Young Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putman, Feb 1, 2000 Biography & Autobiography 255 pages When Andrew Young first ran for Congress, he was known in Atlanta as "Jean Young's husband." Jean, beloved wife, former First Lady of Atlanta, civic leader, educator, friend and colleague of Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King, Marian Wright Edelman, and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, was the proud mother of four who instilled in her children the importance of love, integrity, and faith. Written by her daughter, Andrea, Life Lessons My Mother Taught Me celebrates a good mother, a life welllived and worth emulating, and values that can help us all become more ethical people, more loving parents, and better citizens.Weaving personal stories against a backdrop rich in the turbulent politics of our recent past, Young paints an evocative picture of life in a Southern middleclass black family during the social change that came in the wake of the Great Depression and legalized segregation. Here is a book to be widely shared by mothers and daughters. Lyrics of Sunshine and Shadow: The Courtship and Marriage of Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Alice Ruth Moore By Eleanor Alexander Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated, Mar 1, 2004 Biography & Autobiography 256 pages A remarkable story of tor-

When acclaimed African American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar saw a photo of Alice Ruth Moore in a literary magazine in 1895, he sparked off one of the most important-and turbulent-romances of turn-of-the-century America. During the six years of their courtship and marriage, Paul and Alice enjoyed literary acclaim, received recognition as the vanguard of African American accomplishment, and gained access to elite white society. But beneath the idyllic veneer, Alice's life was marred by rape and brutality, Paul's by alcoholism, depression, sickness, and artistic self-doubt. After suffering a near-fatal beating in 1902, Alice left him to become an important suffragist, and when Paul died four years later, she had answered his ardent letters for reconciliation with only a single telegram: "No."

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman By Ernest J. Gaines Random House LLC, 2009 Fiction 259 pages Miss Jane Pittman. She is one of the most unforgettable heroines in American fiction, a woman whose life has come to symbolize the struggle for freedom, dignity, and justice. Ernest J. Gaines’s now-classic novel—written as an autobiography—spans one hundred years of Miss Jane’s remarkable life, from her childhood as a slave on a Louisiana plantation to the Civil Rights era of the 1960s. It is a story of courage and survival, history, bigotry, and

hope—as seen through the eyes of a woman who lived through it all. A historical tour de force, a triumph of fiction, Miss Jane’s eloquent narrative brings to life an important story of race in America—and stands as a landmark work for our time.

each other emotionally, financially, and physically. The stories they tell are uplifting, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking. From singer Mary J. Blige and her sister LaTonya, who moved her entire family into Mary's mansion to manage her career, to Andrea and Lorelei Williams, who grew up in a one-room studio in Harlem and often didn't have food or electricity, to Bethann Hardison and her friend Marta Vargas, who share the bond of sisterhood as friends, Sisterfriends mines the whole experience in the words of its women. Iyanla Vanzant, Gayle King, and Bell Hooks contribute their own sister stories that compel, provoke, and ultimately illuminate the fascinating relationship of women who call themselves "sister."

212 pages A "sister" is so many things -- someone who was born to your parents, your best friend, the woman you shared love, hope, or heartbreak with...and the women in Sisterfriends are all those, and more. A collage of impressions of African American women both well-known and unknown, the essays in Sisterfriends tell beautiful stories of sisters, whether reDon't Play in the Sun: lated by blood or bonded by One Woman's Journey fate.
