The 10th Annual Health Fair was held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on March 20, 2016 in the gymnasium of New Testament Church, 10201 W. Bradley Rd. Approximately three dozen health care exhibitors and 200 guests participated. The theme for the conference came in part from the Old Testament Book of Proverbs 3:7-8: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones." The three dozen exhibitors, which included many of Milwaukee’s most respected health care providers, offered free health screening, counseling and workshops. All of the booths were staffed by professional health care providers from the exhibiting organizations. There was no charge for the services. Recent shooting part of escalating violence against drivers, union head says A violent tragedy was almost inevitable given the escalating levels of abuse and threats of violence directed toward the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus drivers and the alleged failure to address the rising crisis by Allied Barton Security Services, the private corporation hired by the county to supply security on MCTS buses, according to Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998 President James Macon who spoke at a press conference at the local Union Hall on March 17, three days after two police officers removed and shot an MCTS passenger on March 14, 2016. The man who was removed from the bus is in custody and being treated at a hospital. They have declined to reveal his condition. The incident occurred about 5 p.m., in the 8600 block of N. 60th St., after a

man boarded and asked for a paper transfer slip. MCTS converted to paperless fare transfers on February 29th, but according to the husband of the driver, the man was abusive and threatened his wife. After the man took his seat, he continued to shout profanities and disturb the 15-16 other passengers.

When the driver saw police at a corner she signaled for them and after the man was escorted off the bus he became violent. He was a very large, strong man and he was throwing the two officers around as if they were matchsticks, the husband said. The husband, who de-

clined to give his name or have his photo taken, said his wife is fearful and despondent; fearful that someone will try to take revenge on her. The husband said his wife is not a violent person and would not have called for the police if she knew ahead of time it would result

in a shooting. The husband said his wife blames herself for not handling the situation better and was suffering tremendous guilt and trauma. MCTS buses are not equipped with video cameras, according to Macon, who provided a packet of information which noted there were 391 security-related calls by category in February 2016. The MCTS operates more than 50 routes and Allied Barton Security provides about three dozen officers across three eighthour shifts to manage security. The packet also included two letters written within the past two weeks from drivers requesting that security officers ride their buses on a regular basis because of recent threats made against them. Allied Barton Security Services had not responded by press time to attempts to contact them.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

A change of season The seasons are changing once again. The frozen artic winds will be transforming into gentle spring breezes. The grass will begin to grow again and flowers will bloom. Life will begin to pick up speed with the rise in temperatures. The changing from winter to spring is a beautiful time of year. The spring and the blooming of the flowers are similar to life. During the winter we tend to bundle up ourselves mentally and physically. It is cold outside and we sometimes interact with others in a similar manner. Then the spring and summer comes and our personalities shine like the sun in the sky. I know many of you are saying, “All that’s going to hap-

pen is fools are going to start killing.” This may be true, but when have fools ever stopped killing? We must go forward and leave the fools to their tasks. The spring is a time of rejuvenation. The grass and plants that have laid dormant for the previous months will begin to grow again. As people we need to follow this example. We all need to rejuvenate ourselves in all aspects. Many problems people face have roots in stagnation. The act of rejuvenation frees one of mental decay that comes from stagnation. Once growth begins stagnation is obsolete. Many think that to enjoy the warm sun on one's face is a futile act. To worry about

down and just let the sun shine on them they would discover peace. When one discovers peace many solutions to problems manifest. Try it. The tranquility gained from being in a calm forest or backyard can work wonders. The spring offers one the chance to go somewhere and watch the grass grow. This may sound boring and your mind will tell you about other things needed to be done. You may have things bills you can’t pay is also fu- that are pressing but taking tile. quantum physics but the race for time can’t be won. If it is a race that can’t be won, why run it? The majority of the issues we face in life will be there no matter if we rush to them or walk. Many problems will come to you, so why run to them? Spring is here so enjoy the fresh air and be rejuvenated. There are atrocities being committed in the world. There is a crazy presidential election upcoming. March Madness is in full frenzy. The mortgage will be due on the first. The list goes on and on. But the list will always be there, so enjoy winter's transition to spring. As far as March Madness goes, just remember there is a reason the Lord made the sky North Carolina Blue. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Countdown to the Glorious Resurrection! (Week 3)

“This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.” - Luke 23:52-53 14th Station of the Cross: Jesus is Laid in the Tomb Luke 23:50-54

After Jesus died and was taken down from the Cross, He was laid to rest in a tomb provided by a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. Joseph of Arimathea was also a counselor of honorable estate and a man of good respect. Joseph was also a member of the Sanhedrin, but was opposed to the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, because he feared the Jewish leaders (John 19:38). After Jesus died, Joseph went to Pilate secretly and requested the body of Jesus so that he might provide a proper burial. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke all record the tomb was “cut in the rock” (Matthew 27:60, Mark 15:46, Luke 23:53) which confirms

the wealth of Joseph. Only wealthy individuals could afford to have their tombs carved out of a wall of stone or in the side of a mountain for the burial of themselves and their families. Jesus’ body was carefully placed inside the tomb. Luke records at 23:55 the women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how Jesus’ body was laid in it. This is an important point as it proves the women inspected the tomb and they looked upon the dead body of Jesus to see that it had been honorably laid in place, and all things had been done properly and respectfully. After everything was done correctly, Joseph sealed the tomb by rolling a big stone in front of the entrance of the tomb and went away. Following Jesus’ burial, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate and recalled how Jesus said He would rise again in 3 days. They alleged the disciples would come and steal Jesus’ body and tell the people Jesus rose again. In response to the suspicions of the chief priests and the Pharisees, Pi-

Beloved, man did everything he could do to keep the dead body of Jesus in the tomb; but even though their measures were drastic, nothing could prevent the Resurrection of the “Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords!” (Revelation 19:16). COMMUNITY COLUMN High schoolers make their research mark at UWM By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wisconsin high school students are doing exciting research with professors from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), including a zebrafish study to learn how nicotine, ethanol and other environmental toxins affect the fish. This information can reveal important clues about how these toxins affect humans. The zebrafish projects are part of a long tradition of UWM professors helping high school students prepare to excel in college, which includes a head start in UWM’s

research labs. Students at 31 Wisconsin high schools are involved in UWM research right now, including many Milwaukee schools: Centro Hispano, Bradley Tech, Washington, Clara Mohammed School, The Alliance School, Hamilton, Milwaukee School of Languages, Loyola Academy HS, Ronald Reagan, Riverside, Pulaski, Rufus King, New School for Community Service, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Custer and the Hmong American Peace Academy. UWM was recently recogMark A. Mone nized as one of the top 115 UWM Chancellor research universities in the country, among 4,665 American colleges and universi- nation include Harvard, Yale, ties. Other universities that MIT and Stanford Universireceived this top-level desig- ty. We are thrilled to be part

of this elite group. The only other university in our state to achieve this same status is the University of Wisconsin-Madison. UWM is the state’s only public urban research university. As such, our faculty members and staff are uniquely positioned to provide opportunities not offered elsewhere. There is no other university in the state that includes both research and access in its mission. This means that we are a nationally prestigious research university and an entry point for students who might not get the opportunity to attend college elsewhere. UWM is diverse on many levels. We’re proud of our newly released UWM Research Re-

port, which features vivid examples of the life-changing work our professors and university staff do to help improve the region’s economy and thousands of lives in our state and beyond. I think you will agree that UWM and its graduates are critical to the future of our state once you see the remarkable impact of our work in this report: uwm. edu/researchreport/. I encourage you to take a closer look at UWM. A visit to our campus is one of the best ways to see the exceptional opportunities here that students cannot get anywhere else. Come and visit us and find out why UWM is a great fit for all students. Visit us online, uwm.edu/visit, to schedule your campus tour.

Milwaukee Bucks star forward Jabari Parker surprised students at Milwaukee Public Schools' Audubon Middle and High School on Monday, March 14, 2016. Audubon was celebrating the school's classes and students who achieved attendance goals. Parker has pledged to reward select MPS students each semester who have great attendance or have shown significant improvement in attendance. Parker talked to Audubon students and stressed the importance of attendance. He shared a quote from Vince Lombardi that's near and dear to his heart, "Prior preparation prevents poor performance." Parker told the students that showing up ready to go helps you succeed in life.

shared some inside information with the students including, "I set an alarm clock before bed every night," and "I listen to music in the morning to get my mind right." Parker stressed the importance of showing up and told students that he'll personally continue to do everything he can to help them do that. The Bucks forward also honored the eighth grade boys basketball team whose members haven't missed a single game all season. Parker’s appearance at Audubon is part of an MPS effort to improve attendance districtwide. The district’s overall attendance rate is about 90 percent, but the average is lower for high school students.

Parker also handed out autographs and shook the hands of students who achieved perfect attendance this year.

The district’s “Be in School” campaign was created in partnership with the Milwaukee Bucks and features inspiring messages from Parker, who encourStudents had the opportu- ages students that being in nity to ask Parker some ques- school all day every day is a tions about how he makes critical first step on the path sure he's always on time. The late Sarah Anne Ford (not related to the Fords) was the program coordinator for the Milwaukee Project. For over six years in the 90s, Nellie was an active volunteer with the Neighborhood Leadership Committee. NFl provided her the skills and understanding of the community development process through classes of NFI’s Leadership Workshop by Jan Smith, Learning Your Community conducted by Dan Folkman and Kalyani Rai and Investing In Harambee (Partnership Building Program) conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Project in Social Investing. Inspired by what she had learned and seeing the possibilities of how one person can make a diflerence, Nellie’s Outreach Resource Initiative (NORI) was created in 1994. Nellie considered NORI a spin-off project of NFI because of the affiliation. The NORI/Youth Employment Program-Model 1999 was created to improve the communication between the Milwaukee Central City and the “quick service” restaurant industry. This was a successful partnership venture with McDonald’s Owner/Operator Sherman Claypool, with a $40,000 grant funded by Helen Bader Foundation. Because of the successful venture, Helen Bader Foundation chose to further their assistance by helping NORI to secure 501(c)(3) status. The Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Donors Anita B. Steinman Fund and I.A. Dinerstein Fund made it possible to assist NORI with office space.

Skylight’s Gospel Musical ‘Crowns’ celebrates faith and resilience

Cynthia Cobb, Ashley Levells, and Ron Lee in Crowns. Many cultures follow the custom of dressing in their Sunday best, but some worshippers go above and beyond. In many churchgoing black communities in particular, women jump at the chance to look their best, adorning themselves in exquisite dresses and suits, pristine white gloves and, most distinctively, large, colorful statement hats. These flamboyant hat—crowns, as they’re sometimes called in the South—serve as proud displays of both faith and individuality. Some women save up for months to buy them. Those hats were the subject of the coffee-table book Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, by photographer Michael Cunningham and journalist Craig Marberry. And that book, in turn, served as the inspiration for Regina Taylor’s 2002 play of the same name and its popular musical update, a celebration of faith, fashion and the resilience of the human spirit set to joyous gospel standards. Those themes resonated for Sheri Williams Pannell, director of Skylight Music Theatre’s Milwaukee premiere of the musical, who credits her interest in music to her background singing in church as a kid. “I was inspired by the idea that Crowns could go from the page to the stage, first in the form of a play and then in a form of a musical,” Pannell said. “When I learned that Skylight was producing the musical, my first thought was I wanted to be in it, and then when the opportunity came to direct it I jumped.” The musical follows Yolanda, a troubled teenager who is sent down to South Carolina to live with her grandmother after her brother loses his life to gang violence. Once there, she discovers a community of churchgoing black women of a certain age who have lived through their own share of hardships. Strong-willed and outspoken, the characters are composites of real women profiled in Cunningham and Marberry’s book.

“I work with children like Yolanda as I go into various schools as a theater educator, so I know this character intimately,” Pannell said. “And here’s an opportunity for a community to come together to help save this girl, to reach out to her, so that she is not lost in a system, lost in her grief. In hearing these women’s stories, Yolanda finds herself, because nobody manages to live a life without hurt, without pain and without the assistance of people who care about us. These are powerful lessons, and we’re obligated, if we’re blessed with enough years on this Earth, to share those lessons, so that a young person can avoid some of those traps, and some of the mistakes we’ve made. Through this production, the young people who come to see it as well as the elders will have an opportunity to experience what it means to feel whole again after a tragedy.” Pannell rounded up an all-Milwaukee cast for the production, including several Skylight veterans (Cynthia Cobb, Raven Dockery and

Una Van Duvall as three of the women, and Ron Lee, (in various roles) and a company newcomer as Yolanda, Marquette University theater graduate Ashley Levells. “It was a difficult process casting Yolanda, because we had all kinds of talented women audition who understood how to tell her story, but Ashley brought a maturity to the choices she made during the audition that showed me she would be able to go to the dark place that Yolanda must go and come out whole on the other side,” Pannell said. “I told Ashley, ‘It took Mary J. Blige about 15 years to make this journey, but you have to make it in 90 minutes,’ and she was up for the challenge.” Crowns is the fourth of five shows in Skylight’s current season about the journeys of women, all directed by women, and the company is hoping that it’ll have a wide appeal beyond just the usual Downtown theatergoing set. “We want to reach everyone,” Pannell said. “I believe a show like this opens an opportunity for groups in our city who have never really ventured into the Third Ward, who don’t know anything about Skylight Music Theatre, to get introduced to the theater and the quality of work we do here. It’s a family show, so I’m hoping that families of all ethnicities will be present. If you are at all moved by good storytelling, this will speak to you.”

Crowns runs until March 26 at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway. There are still seats available of the final shows. For tickets call 414291-7800, visit skylightmusictheatre.org.

Estate Sale IT’S SPRING - Time To Give Your House A Makeover Thursday, March 24: African American administrator, teacher, and social activist Dr. Dorothy I. Height was born in 1912. Throughout her career, Dr. Height was a leader in the struggle for equality and human rights for all people. Winner of a scholarship for her exceptional oratorical skills, she entered New York University where she earned her Bachelor and Master degrees in four years. While working as a caseworker for the welfare department in New York, Dr. Height joined the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in 1937 and her career as a pioneer in civil rights activities began to unfold. Working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, A. Philip Randolph, and others, Dr. Height participated in virtually all of the major civil and human rights events in the 1950’s and 1960’s. For her tireless efforts on behalf of the less fortunate, President Ronald Reagan presented her the Citizens Medal Award for distinguished service to the country in 1989. Dr. Height died on April 20, 2010 at Howard University Hospital.

Friday, March 25: On this date in 1931, nine young black men were arrested in Scottsboro, Alabama, and the case of the Scottsboro Boys trial began. The nine accused men, many still teenagers and one as young as 13, were accused of raping two white women. After six years of appeals and retrials, during which the U.S. Supreme Court twice declared mistrials, five of the original indictments were dropped. The remaining four men received long prison terms. By 1946, all were paroled except Heywood Patterson, who, two years later, escaped to Michigan, where that state government refused to extradite him back to Alabama. Clarence Norris and Patterson went on to write about their ordeal. Norris, who titled his 1979 book “The Last of the Scottsville Boys,” died in January 1989.

Saturday, March 26: On this date in 2008, more than 140 years after a former Florida governor described Africans as “a wild barbarian to be tamed and civilized,” the Legislature apologized for the state’s role in sanctioning slavery. The House and Senate approved a resolution expressing “profound regret for the involuntary servitude of Africans, and calling for reconciliation among all Floridians.” Sunday, March 27: African American business entrepreneur Effa Manley, the only female owner in the history of Negro Leagues – was born in on this day in 1900. Her influence extended beyond baseball; she was also active in the black civil rights movement. She took over day-to-day business operations of the team, arranged playing schedules, planned the team’s travel, managed and met the payroll, bought the equipment, negotiated contracts, and handled publicity. Worried about what her players would do for employment during the off-season, she and her partner sponsored a team in the Puerto Rican winter leagues. During World War II, Negro Leagues attendance reached alltime highs. By the end of the war, the leagues were a $2 million enterprise and represented one of the largest black-dominated businesses in the U.S. In 1976 she published “Negro Baseball ... before Integration,” which listed 73 players she felt were qualified for the Hall of Fame. She wrote numerous letters to the Baseball Hall of Fame and publications such as The Sporting News, urging recognition for the league and its players. The Hall of Fame enshrined 11 players from the Negro Leagues in 1973. Since then many other Negro League players have been admitted and in 1985, the Hall of Fame added an exhibit on black baseball. Her photo is prominently displayed in the exhibit.

One of the most successful all-black professional basketball teams in the 1920s and 1930s, they added grace and style to the game of American basketball. Robert L. Douglass who was a native of the Caribbean island of St. Kitts and a former professional basketball player with the New York Spartans created the Harlem Renaissance Big Five team in 1922. The team gained their name from their playing location, the Renaissance Casino ballroom in Harlem, New York, where they dazzled fans with their innovative style of play. Tuesday, March 29: The USS Mason, a WWII warship manned by a predominantly black crew that served as a role model for the integration of U.S. Navy ships was commissioned in 1944. The USS Mason (DE-529) was a Destroyer Escort, with 6 officers, and 150 black enlisted men. By the time the Mason was decommissioned, all the chief petty officers were black. The ship escorted six convoys across the North Atlantic. In February 1995, surviving crewmen were awarded letters of commendation for their meritorious service and steadfast devotion to duty. Over 150,000 blacks served in the US Navy during WWII. Wednesday, March 30: Mary Elizabeth Bowser, a black spy for the Union Army during the Civil War, was born on this date in 1840. During the Civil War, Bowser served as a spy for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. She operated as a servant in the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, where she gathered important military information to pass on to the Grant Administration. To avoid suspicion, she pretended she was crazy and went by the nickname, “Crazy Bet.” Bowser recorded the details of her espionage in a diary; this diary is now owned by a black family who will not release it. Her date and place of death is unknown. An NCON Communications Publication
