The Milwaukee Urban League hosts 2016 Annual Meeting The Milwaukee Urban League 2016 Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. The annual event took place at GE Healthcare at Innovation Drive. The meeting brought Urban League employees and board members together to plan the direction of the Milwaukee branch. There were also plenty of announcements including the date of the Black and White Ball (Saturday, June 11, 2016) and the National Urban League Conference in Baltimore, MD on August 3-6. The biggest announcement was the forthcoming retirement of longtime Urban League President and CEO Ralph Hollman. Ralph reassured the attendees that there is currently a search for a replacement to ensure a smooth transition in leadership when the time comes. Northwestern Mutual Foundation celebrates opening of Amani Community Neighborhood Food Pantry

On Thursday, March 24, 2016 Northwestern Mutual Foundation, Hunger Task Force and Greater Little Hill Church joined forces to help celebrate the ribbon cutting on Little Hill's food pantry now called the Amani Community Neighborhood Food Pantry. The pantry has been in the Amani neighborhood for 20 years, but was nothing more than a "Pastor's Closet." Now with generous funding from Northwestern Mutual Foundation, the church was able to open a larger pantry with professional equipment capable of servicing the families of the Amani neighborhood with healthy and nutritious emergency food. Pictured at the grand-opening are (from left) Hunger Task Force executive director Sherrie Tussler; Greater Little Hill Pastor Bernie Allen; Greater Little Hill First Lady Mattie Allen; rePhoto by Yvonne Kemp cipients of Amani Community Neighborhood Food Pantry Etta McChristian and Stacey Manuel; and Northwestern Mutual Foundation president John Kordsmeier.

Wisconsin presidential primary draws visits from all five candidates

Hillary Clinton

Sen. Bernie Sanders

Sen. Ted Cruz

By Steve Waring Special to the Milwaukee Times

nees will be after two-thirds of the states have voted. But this is by no means a normal Presidential election year and the timing of Wisconsin’s election is seen as crucial for all five remaining candidates from both parties. The election on Tuesday is considered so important that all five Presidential primary candidates visited Wisconsin in late March. The Republican Party even held what it

called a “town hall forum” in Milwaukee on March 29 in which each candidate was interviewed individually for about an hour by a moderator. The format included selected questions from the audience. Democratic front runner and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made five stops in four cities, including two in Milwaukee, March 28-29. On Monday

she visited Madison and the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. The next morning she visited Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2500 W. Medford in Milwaukee, before moving on to campaign stops in Green Bay and La Crosse. Democratic challenger and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders' campaign was initially dismissed as a long shot and he still lags far be-

hind Secretary Clinton in the number of delegates, but he has convincingly won four of the last five primaries. A win in Wisconsin would keep alive a Democratic primary contest which most political pundits had already dismissed as a foregone conclusion. At press time a number of polls gave Secretary Clinton a slight lead. Republican Senator Ted Cruz received an endorsement from Governor Scott Walker and made his first stop in Wisconsin with a visit to Janesville on March 24. On March 25, he made an appearance in Oshkosh. Before departing after the town hall forum on March 29, Sen. Cruz also made campaign stops in the Fox River Valley, suburban Milwaukee, and several rural counties near Madison. His itinerary included a visit to Madison in “celebration of women” on March 30. Sen. Cruz is hoping that a convincing win in Wisconsin will help persuade Republicans turned off by the Republican front runner, billionaire businessman Donald Trump, that he is a viable alternative. It would be difficult to overcome the lead in delegates that Trump has accumulated, but Sen. Cruz has been slowly gaining endorsements and financial support from Republicans hoping in the remaining primary elections to deny Trump the minimum number of delegates necessary for a first-ballot nomination at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July 2016. Current polls show Sen. Cruz with a sizeable lead over Trump in Wisconsin. Trump began his visit to Wisconsin on March 28, appearing on several Milwaukee-based conservative talk radio shows. He also made an appearance in Janesville on March 29 and at St. Norbert College in De Pere and UW - Green Bay on March 30. His final appearance is scheduled for Appleton later on Wednesday. Ohio Governor John Kasich trails far behind both Sen. Cruz and Trump. He has tried to present himself as the most experienced and high minded candidate. Pundits credit him for doing well in the debates, but he has only won his home state (Continued on pg. 4)

When the Wisconsin 2016 Presidential primary election schedule was finalized, both the Republican and Democratic parties chose April 5, making it the 33rd state or territory to hold an election this year. In a normal Presidential primary season, it is usually fairly obvious who the two Presidential nomi-

The Glorious Resurrection! Remembering the greatest event in history “…Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen!” - Luke 24:5b-6 Early on the third day after Jesus’ death, the women came to Jesus’ tomb with spices to anoint the body of Jesus. The women were stunned to see the stone in front of Jesus’ tomb had been rolled away. Upon entering, they realized that Jesus’ body was not there. While wondering the meaning of these things, there was an angelic visitation in the form of two men who appeared. Angelic visitations in Scripture alert the reader to a profound event taking place in Scripture. When the women were told Jesus had arisen by the angel, the women’s emotions went from surprise to fear. Frightened, the women bowed down to the ground but the angelic men asked them why they were looking for the living among the dead. In Scripture, people often reacted with fear to the

unknown or unfamiliar. The angelic beings confirmed the story that Jesus had risen! (Luke 24:1-6). The Resurrection occurred early one Sunday morning in 33 A.D. The Resurrection is the rising again of Jesus the Christ from the dead. Not only do the four gospels attest to the Resurrection of Jesus; but Jesus also made appearances to several people (e.g., the disciples on the road to Emmaus; Mary Magdalene, Peter, to the disci-

ples before His ascension to heaven (Mark 16:12-13, Luke 24:34, John 20:8, Mark 16:14, Mark 16:9). Paul also testified to the Resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8. When Jesus rose from the dead, the sins of every sinner were atoned for (Acts 13:37-38). Many people do not believe they need a Savior. We all have sinned (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God and therefore we needed a Savior to remove the consequences of sin.

“Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God'!” - John 20:27-28 ---------------------------Celebration of Motherhood article request In May this column will run articles titled: “What Have Been Your Greatest Joys of Motherhood?” This writer is soliciting submissions from readers to include during the month of May, 2016. He made appearances in Madison and La Crosse on March 28 and Milwaukee on March 29. He is also scheduled to return to Milwaukee for a campaign stop on April 1.

Milwaukee,

Tuesday, April 5, 2016 Chris Larson: Pro-Estabrook Dam. Anti-Taxpayer. Chris Larson voted to rebuild the Estabrook Dam at a cost of over $5 million, just to preserve a private lake for a few wealthy landowners. According to a study by Milwaukee Riverkeeper, removing the Estabrook Dam would prevent flooding, improve water quality and create better fishing downstream. Chris Larson wants to triple the County’s sales tax. Sales tax hikes hit the poor and seniors on fixed incomes harder than the wealthy. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 2/29/16]

The names of the candidates for each office to be voted for, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office, each in its proper column, in the sample ballot included with this notice.

INFORMATION TO VOTERS Upon entering the polling place, a voter shall state his or her name and address, show an acceptable form of photo identification and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. If a voter is not registered to vote, a voter may register to vote at the polling place serving his or her residence, if the voter presents proof of residence in a form specified by law. Where ballots are distributed to voters, the intials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the voter shall retire alone to a voting booth and cast his or her ballot, except that a voter who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the voter’s minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the voter of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice.

AT THE SPRING ELECTION Where Optical Scan Voting is Used

The voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided, and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. When using an electronic ballot marking device (“Automark”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote.

AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE VOTE Where Optical Scan Voting is Used

Within the party of his or her choice, the voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice or shall, in the alternative, fill in the oval next to the words “Uninstructed Delegation,” or write in the name of a person of his or her choice for a candidate in the space provided for a write-in vote and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. When using an electronic ballot marking device (“Automark”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen at the party of his or her choice. Within the party of his or her choice, the voter shall then touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice or shall, in the alternative, touch the screen at the words “Uninstructed Delegation,” or type in the name of a person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. A voter may cast only one vote in the presidential preference primary. The vote shall not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes’ time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the voter in marking his or her ballot may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. If a voter spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official who shall issue a proper ballot in its place.

After Voting the Ballot

After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve so the marks do not show. After casting his or her vote, the voter shall insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve. The voter shall leave the polling place promptly. A voter may select an individual to assist in casting his or her vote if the voter declares to the presiding official that he or she is unable to read, has difficulty reading, writing, or understanding English, or that due to disability is unable to cast his or her ballot. By supporting UPAF we’re all in the arts together By Al Jarreau I loved growing up in Milwaukee. Part of that big love was that I was surrounded by music from my earliest years and remembrances. My father was a minister, and a great singer, and my mother was the church pianist. I was the fifth of six children and my older brothers and sisters were all very musically inclined. They all sang, and three of them played musical instruments, too, but I didn’t. I first remember singing at age 4 or 5, in that church. I sang little nursery rhyme-ish kinds of songs that were sweet and simple. Even though my mother taught piano, I couldn’t get the baseball glove off of my hand long enough to find the middle C. But I sang at every opportunity (even at parent teacher association meetings), often accompanied by my mother. In junior and senior high school, we had a marching band, a concert band, an orchestra, and an 80-voice acapella choir that performed everything from The Messiah to songs from South Pacific. And we had a football team, basketball team, and cheerleaders who sang and danced. Each year, there was a variety show called The Follies, which featured all of the above in a grand two-hour production. The audio/visual crew provided lighting and sound, and various set ups. During those days, exposure to the arts in school was as much as a part of the curriculum as reading and writing and arithmetic, and participating in sports. It never came down to a choice of either/or. It was all about a well planned, well rounded education that included self-discovery, which comes from doing the above. I would love to say that I was also a painter or a sculptor or a dancer or an actor. But I sure did a lot of music. And when I moved on, to Ripon College, I continued to sing as often as I could. I was part of a singing group called The Indigos. Sometimes we even got paid when we sang at local restaurants and bars. My major was in psychology and I then went on to graduate school to study rehabilitation counseling. This all led to my work as a counselor in San Francisco, 19651968. I am very concerned that today children in my hometown of Milwaukee, and across our country, are not getting the same exposure to arts that I had. This is largely due to extreme cuts in funding for education, and the decision by our leaders that the fine arts are expendable. While art programs have been slashed nationwide, schools with higher concentrations of impoverished or minority students have espe-

cially felt the brunt of these cuts. For instance, according to 2008 data from Americans for the Arts, African American and Hispanic students were only half as likely to have access to art programs in school as their white peers. Without a doubt, some special effort must be made to assure that these children get better served- better nourishment, better school rooms and facilities, clean and safe drinking water, and better communities. Please consider this: For the sake of our own sane and healthy survival here on earth, we must learn to understand each other better. And the arts are a common language for communicating toward this goal. Any piece of art is a translated and crystallized version of our human emotions. Joy, sadness, pain, and even boredom. Whether it is a poem, a painting, a sculpture, an opera, or a ballet, each of these is an observable, audible, or touchable expression of our feelings. Participating in the arts, whether by creating or observing, is surely a kind of “sensitivity training” that opens our eyes and our minds to these portrayals of human emotions, and this makes us alert to the feelings and needs of others. These were the understandings that lead to the “the new deal.” These were the understandings that lead to the establishment to vocational rehabilitation, especially for soldiers returning from war with amputations and shell shock (PTSD) and that lead to the establishment of Social Security so that our elderly could live out their lives with basic needs, and dignity, provided for, and aid to families with dependent children (welfare) was thought to be an essential in Washington. What I’m trying to say is this: There are lots of people who look at the Mona Lisa, and think, “Home girl is bored! She needs a hug now!” And, when you listen to, or sing along to, Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi,” or Bill Withers “Use Me,” or “Unbreak my Heart,” you have felt for somebody, and felt their feelings. These understandings may help you learn how to react in ways that are helpful, healthy, sane, and pro- survival. The arts can save our families and our communities. A young person who has a trumpet or ballet slippers or some paint brushes in his bag is probably not also carrying a weapon. As a community, working together, we must collaborate to bring arts and cul-

ture back into the schools. And, we must support efforts such as the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF), which raises needed dollars for this purpose. In 2015, UPAF’s 15 member groups received a total of $492,500 earmarked for arts education.

students, and hundreds of schools, many in the most under-served communities of Milwaukee. Thank you, UPAF, for your brilliant work. Music is my passion and my motivation. It is most important that we assure that future generations of Milwaukee children have the same opportunity that I hadto participate in the performing arts. The work of UPAF, and that of each of it’s donors, are a force for positive change, and that is worthy of our support.
