Bucks sign 30-year lease with new arena owner The Milwaukee Bucks have signed a 30-year lease with the public entity that will own the team's new arena. The Bucks will pay at least $1 million annually to rent the arena from the Wisconsin Center District. Those lease payments will total $45 million over the term of the lease. The district board approved the terms of the lease agreement Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Construction can now begin on the $524 million arena that will be located just north of the Bucks' current home, the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Groundbreaking is set for June 18, with the arena expected to ready for the start of the 2018-19 season. The arena will also host

State Rep. Mandela Barnes to challenge incumbent State Sen. Lena Taylor for 4th Senate District

Marquette University basketball games, concerts and other events. The team will be responsible for operating, maintenance and capital repair expenses. The agreement called for the Bucks to deposit $60 million into a capital improvements fund for the arena during the term of

the lease. A public financing package approved last year covered $250 million toward arena construction, while current and former Bucks owners have already committed $250 million. The Bucks have agreed to pay for any cost overruns during construction.

State Rep. Mandela Barnes announced April 11 that he intends to challenge State Sen. Lena Taylor for Wisconsin’s 4th State Senate District, which includes parts of the city of Milwaukee, the City of Glendale, the City of Wauwatosa and the Village of Shorewood. Rep. Barnes is in his second term as State Representative for the 11th Assembly District. In a statement released to the media, Rep. Barnes said he had worked to make the Milwaukee neighborhoods in his district safer and more vibrant and that he believed the Wisconsin State Senate needed the type of “transformational leadership with a vision” that he had demonstrated as a community organizer and as a member of the State Assembly. The 4th District, Rep. Barnes said, “deserve[d] new leadership that they can trust to serve as their State Senator.” Sen. Taylor was first elected to a four-year term in 2004. This will be the first time since 2010 that a Democratic incumbent has faced a primary challenger for a State Senate seat, according to the

State Rep. Mandela Barnes Government Accountability Board. Following the announcement Sen. Taylor released the following statement: “There’s no greater privilege than serving the residents of the 4th Senate district,” she said. “In my 13 years of service, I have authored and passed more than one hundred laws. With a proven track record of accomplishments and experience, I look forward to my run for re-election.” The date of the primary election is August 9.

Rebuilding Our Community

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Finding some traction Each day we hear of great achievements occurring in science, medical research, education and technology. These advancements are certainly creating breakthroughs in areas we never believed would happen. These changes are altering how we live our lives, both now and in the near future. We are also hearing about other ground breaking initiatives from around the globe that are making tremendous impact in the areas of business and industry, startups, leadership, interventions and social media. It is amazing how far we have come over the past two decades or so and it certainly will be interesting to see what will happen in the next 5-10 years.

I find it quite fascinating to glance over the endless list of “new ideas” that are changing our world as we know it. These “new ideas” are affecting who, what, when, where, how and why we do things. And with each passing day, here comes another “new idea.” Each “new idea” also brings with it some fascination about its possibility, measurable outcomes and long term impact. Believe me, “I am all in” for new ways in which to get things done, solve lingering problems and provide a pathway to a brighter future. But all “new ideas” are not the same, for some “new ideas” bring with them a down side. At first glance it may appear that things are going

great, a lot of fanfare, a lot of intrigue, and a lot of excitement; but there is something missing and you can’t quite put your finger on it. The way I see it, you have to ask the question: Who benefits, who loses and who is left behind with each “new idea.” There are always “winners and losers” when change occurs.

LoveKindness

Another thing I see missing is how can the “new idea” that begins working effectively be sustained way beyond its starting point. All “new ideas” bring some kind of change. However, change for the sake of change does not always work. Change may look good on paper, provide wonderful talking points, advance a career and can bring a fresh view to an old idea. But change that makes a lasting impression has to include not only the person who has the idea, but also include the people it will affect. With a new generation coming of age and rapidly ascending to prominent roles throughout our society, they have to find ways to make their “new ideas”

stick and to set a new trend for us to follow. Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Facebook, Twitter #AC53 and LinkedIn. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd. Milwaukee 414-265-5546. Love is a verb As we look back on Easter Sunday 2016 we have experienced an example of God’s love for every one of us. How do we accept this love and how do we live our lives as if we fully appreciate what this means? When we put the two words 'Love Kindness' together we are not expressing two different nouns; rather, Love in this case is an action verb. The challenge when we do this is that it requires specific action. Admiring or acknowledging acts of Kindness is not what we are suggesting we need to do. Rather it is up to each one of us to actually make a specific effort to be kind to those we meet each and every day. We have made suggestions but I suspect you already know what you need to do in order to become a kinder person. It is often easy to believe our everyday personal behavior does not make much difference; but the truth is that this is what makes all the difference; One of my favorite hymns is Let There be Peace on Earth. The words, “and let it begin with me,” really says

others so that we can begin to change what we consider to be important. Kindness is much more important than violence so let us begin to truly Love Kindness! it all because until it does in fact begin individually it does not begin at all. Each one of us has the opportunity every day to make where we live and work a more peaceful and kind place just by being conscious of how we behave with others. This column has been asking you the readers to share your personal experiences regarding observed and experienced acts of kindness. We have offered rewards and yet we have not received any response. We realize that kindness is not something we have made any effort as a society to identify

An NCON Communications Publication

as a measurable achievement. It may be that we take kind acts as something that just happens and is not worthy of singling out. We either do it or we do not but keeping track of kindness is not something we ever seriously considered doing. Yet it is my contention that this may be one reason that we are not realizing the joy that Jesus tells us we ought to be experiencing every day of our lives. Recording your kind acts for a month may make you become much more aware of your behavior towards others. Making an effort to reach out does require conscious effort but the surprising thing is that it does not require time or money. Can you make Love Kindness a daily personal habit? Please mail or email me your kindness stories and nominations. These will be printed in future columns and everyone who sends in a nomination will receive a Love Kindness package. We want to share these inspiring stories with

Alcohol Awareness Month: Signs and symptoms (Part 2) According to the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs are serious issues that should not be ignored or minimized. If left untreated, use and abuse can develop into drug dependence or alcoholism. As a result, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse early. If you’re worried about your own drug or alcohol use, or that of a friend or family member, here are some of the warning signs to look for: Symptoms associated with alcohol abuse: • Temporary blackouts or memory loss. • Recurrent arguments or fights with family members or friends as well as irritability, depression, or mood swings. • Continuing use of alcohol to relax, to cheer up, to sleep, to deal with problems, or to feel "normal." • Headache, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, or other unpleasant symptoms when one stops drinking. • Drinking alone, in the

mornings, or in secret. Signs of addiction include, but are not limited by: • Loss of control: Drinking or drugging more than a person wants to, for longer than they intended, or despite telling themselves that they wouldn’t do it this time. • Neglecting other activities: Spending less time on activities that used to be important (hanging out with family and friends, exercising, pursuing hobbies or other interests) because of the use of alcohol or drugs; drop in attendance and performance at work or school. • Risk taking: More likely to take serious risks in order to obtain one’s drug of choice.

Senator Taylor was joined by friends, family and supporters at the Big Eazy Restaurant, 2053 N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Senator Taylor, who was elected to the Senate in 2004, is facing a challenge from fellow Democrat, Representative Mandela Barnes. Taylor released a statement to Barnes' challenge saying: "There's no greater privilege than serving

the residents of the 4th Senate district. In my 13 years of service, I have authored and passed more than one hundred laws. With a proven track record of accomplishments and experience, I look forward to my run for re-election." It's unusual for Democratic senators to face primary challenges. According to Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board, that last happened in 2010.

ATTENTION MEN: DON’T CUT YOUR LIFE SHORT. Take 5-10 Minutes to Save Your Life. African American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence rates in the world and are twice as likely to die from it than any other racial ethnic group. Despite these facts, Black men are less likely to participate in screening for prostate cancer than other men.

For more information or to find a doctor: 1-888-9-WHEATON mywheaton.org/MensHealth

One in six men in America will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Luckily, the disease progresses slowly, and if it is caught early enough, it’s one of the easiest cancers to beat. African American or Hispanic men, or men with a family history of prostate cancer should begin annual screenings at age 45. Please talk with your doctor about having a prostate screening. Only a few minutes can make a big difference. Making Our Community Stronger. Healthier. Better.

Milwaukee woman finds education success with McDonald’s Archways To Opportunity program Archways to opportunity provides eligible part-time and full-time employees flexible education programs McDonald’s celebrates Verleana Hodges and the more than 5,000 restaurant employees enrolled in Archways to Opportunity in the United States. Archways to Opportunity is a set of programs developed to support restaurant employees across the country in pursuing their educational goals, whether it’s earning their high school diploma, pursuing a college degree or learning English through the “English Under the Arches” program. McDonald’s is committed to leading the industry in promoting comprehensive workforce education in a way that helps employees succeed no matter where they might be on their educational journey. The company aims to use its scale to be part of the solution to close the education gap in this country and they are listening to employee feedback to make developmental programs successful. Since April 2015, McDonald’s has provided more than $4.75 million in tuition assistance for eligible employees to achieve their high school and college degrees. In ad-

dition, the company has seen the following participation: • 812 have been awarded tuition assistance for high school • 3,346 awarded tuition assistance for college • 872 graduated from English Under the Arches • 308 completed advising sessions Keep it up Verleana! Now an assistant manager at the Cedarburg McDonald’s, Hodges started as a crew person in 2009, but soon realized the benefits and opportunities could lead to a more longterm commitment. During her seven years with McDonald’s, she has been promoted twice and is currently preparing to go to McDonald's Business Leadership Class at Hamburger University. “We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all

Verleana Hodges approach to success when it comes to workforce education. Each of our employees has his or her own path to walk and is moving at his or her own pace,” said Steve Kilian, Jr., owner/operator of the Cedarburg McDonald’s. “Whether that means helping them finish high

school, earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree or even learn English our approach is to provide programs that meet them where they are.” Hodges, a graduate of Riverside High school in Milwaukee, has utilized the tuition assistance program and will graduate from Argosy University with a degree in public relations in November 2016. “My mother has always been the driving force for me to get my college degree,” said Hodges. “With my education and all that I have learned about business at McDonald’s, I feel like there’s no limit to what I can achieve.” About Archways to Opportunity Archways to Opportunity provides a range of opportunities with programs all designed to meet employees at their point of need. All of

the following programs are available to both company employees and the men and women employed by independent Owner/Operators. • High school completion – A nationally accredited Career Online High School program that is offered to all eligible restaurant managers and crew to obtain a high school diploma at no cost. • College access & completion • Tuition assistance – Provides upfront tuition assistance for all college courses at higher education institutions accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. • ACE – McDonald’s employee management training curriculum carries American Council on Education (ACE) college credit recommendations that can be transferred to many two- and four-year colleges. • College Credit Connection Program – McDonald’s has partnered with 6 colleges that work with employees to map out credit recommendations into specific courses and offer discounted tuition. Asthma triggers to avoid this spring Flowers are blooming. Trees are budding. It’s finally springtime; well, it is in the parts of the country that still respect and adhere to the seasonal calendar. For many, spring is an exciting time of the year as it brings warmer weather and prepares us for summer. But for those suffering from asthma, spring, its pollen and other allergens can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 3 million African Americans were living with asthma in 2012. In fact, Blacks are 20 percent more likely to have asthma than any other race. Asthma isn’t something to play with. An asthma attack can be fatal. Here are a few things to be

with asthma. Smoke is another trigger for asthma flareups. If you are going to be near a campfire, be sure to sit upwind of the smoke. Also, don’t sit too close to the fire. Thunderstorms With spring comes more rain and thunderstorms across the country. Experts say rainwater is the reason why allergens like pollen grains spread like wildfire. During these storms, there are usually high winds. This helps spread the pollen at a quicker rate. Talk with your physician if you are experiencing allergic symptoms like eye and nose irritation. For anyone with asthma, there are phone apps that can help you keep track of pollen in the air and other triggers that can make you feel miserable.

My story: 'Any day without pain is a good day!' At 32 years young, Shakir Cannon is not only on the frontline of sickle cell disease research as someone living with SCD, but also as a dedicated advocate. As he puts it, he’s not a patient of health care but rather a part-

ner in health care. In 2015, Cannon co-founded the Minority Coalition for Precision Medicine (MCPM) “to mitigate/eliminate health disparities of minorities by expanding the awareness and use of 'Precision Medicine'

to increase personal health and reduce individual and government expenses in providing crucial health care.” In February 2016, Cannon was among an elite group of individuals invited to the White House to participate in the

FAQ about the Senior Companion program The Senior Companion Program (SCP) is a national older adult volunteer program in which seniors help other adults with special needs maintain independent living. The mission of the Senior Companion Program is to provide meaningful retirement opportunities for limited-income persons age 55 and better by assisting other adults and seniors who need person-to-person support because of loneliness, illness or disability. In return for this service, the volunteer receives a tax-exempt stipend, which is not considered income by federal law. The stipend helps the senior volunteer with the cost of volunteering and to meet other living needs that cannot always be met on a limited income. Senior Companions are considered volunteers and also receive other benefits in addition to the stipend. The seniors who become Senior Companions experience meaningful service to others in their community while finding new discoveries and making new friends. It is a program that benefits the volunteer, client and the community. Senior Companion FAQ Q. What benefits do Senior Companion volunteers receive?

A. All of the following: • 40-hour orientation • Smock and photo ID • Tax-exempt stipend • Annual physical • Recognition • On-going monthly in-service training • Mileage/travel reimbursement • Assistance with meal costs • Supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty • Paid leave and holidays • Regular supervision by program staff • A chance to make new friends Q. What does a Senior Companion volunteer do? A. Senior Companion volunteers are required to serve adult clients an average of 20 hours per week. Typically Senior Companions visit three to five clients per week, working one-on-one to develop a close mutual relationship, which is meaningful and helpful to both the client and the volunteer. Senior Companions assist in a variety of activities with their clients such as: • going for walks • sitting and talking • doing crafts and board games • reading to the client • assisting with meal preparation

• helping with mail or dealing with the public • assisting with shopping and/or medical appointments • other assigned activities • provide respite • provide non-medical support Senior Companion volunteers provide support and attention for clients in a consistent fashion that is unique to the program. Q. What special-need adults can be served by a Senior Companion? A. Senior Companion volunteers serve special-need adults who are 21 years of

age or older with an emphasis on the older adult. Some of the adult’s special needs are: developmental disabilities, mental illness, frail health, dementia, physical impairments, visual impairment, emotional problems, learning disorders, loneliness and isolation. These special needs adults may live by themselves in their home, with family, foster, group or nursing homes. They can also be in an adult day care center, adult education program or other special adult programming. Q. How are Senior Companions matched with

adults who have special needs? A. The Senior Companion Program has Memorandums of Understanding with non-profit and/or health proprietary agencies/organizations in the community. These agencies/organizations refer identified clients to the Senior Companion Program whom they feel will benefit from having volunteer assistance. Senior Companions are then matched with an identified client. All homes/sites are prescreened to ensure they are appropriate for a Senior Companion volunteer. Q. Do Senior Companions have background checks? A. Yes. All Senior Companion Program staff and volunteers have the required FBI fingerprinting check as well as a National Sex Offenders check. If you would like more information about the Senior Companion Program call the Social Development Commission at (414) 906-2779 or by email at edunbar@cr-sdc. org.

hadn’t fully dissipated yet, I was able to go home. It was about a two-week recovery, but I was able to spend Christmas at home with my family. “Any day without pain is a good day! "I would have a number of minor to severe pain crisis episodes, especially within the two-year period between graduating college and landing my full-time job at the New York State Department of Health. None of these resulted in a hospital admission though (thank God!). "It was during this time where I adopted the lifestyle and phrase, 'Any day without PAIN is a good day!' A motto and constant reminder that, with an illness as unpredictable and sometimes debilitating as sickle cell disease, you have to appreciate every single pain-free day. "Appreciate every painfree breath, every pain-free step, every-pain free anything! "Now, I sign every email with the word “thankful” in my signature for two reasons: 1. Because my name actually means thankful, and 2. Because I’m thankful to be able to live a mostly pain-free life. Glory be to God!"

"I’ve had few minor pain crisis in my young adult life so I knew right away what was happening but I didn’t want to alarm my friend who was looking forward to the game, as we had both attended the SUNY at Albany. I sat through the entire game, literally suffering in silence. "I’ve always been the quiet type, but I wonder if my friend noticed that I was extremely quiet during that game. I was more worried about breathing than talking. "As soon as I got to my car I called my parents at home, struggling to talk, and told them that I needed to go to the emergency room. My mother thought I should come home first so they could take me. "It was the longest, most painful drive EVER! "This ended up being not only my first hospital admission due to a sickle cell pain crisis but it was also the most severe. I could barely talk, hell, I could barely breathe. I thought I was going to die. "Thankfully, after a seven day stay at Albany Medical Center, although the pain

Milwaukee hosts premiere of feature film on foster children Hollywood briefly came to the Marcus South Gate Cinema for a preview of a major motion picture based in Milwaukee and scheduled for nationwide release on April 29. The premier viewing drew about 200 audience members, including State Senator Lena Taylor. Grandma’s House was written by Milwaukee native Kimberley T. Zulkowski who also served as executive producer. It stars Coco Jones and Loretta Devine. The movie is loosely based on Zulkowski’s own experi- ter care system. She was the ence in the Milwaukee fos- second oldest of 12 siblings. Her mother suffered from drug abuse and Zulkowski was neglected and sexually abused before her mother lost custodial rights to her daughter when the child was nine. Ironically Zulkowsky had a grandmother, Margie Reed Harris, who had already been a licensed foster care giver for more than a decade, but the two were not united until her case crossed the docket of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Christopher Foley. He also attended the movie premiere, but declined to discuss details of the case other than to praise Zulkowski as a remarkable Kimberley Zulkowski and woman, especially given the Judge Christopher Foley difficult start she had in life. In an exclusive interview at the movie premiere.

with The Milwaukee Times, Zulkowski said she wanted to make a positive movie about Milwaukee. “We need some light shed on this city,” she said. “Only light can drive out darkness. My grandmother welcomed those who were suffering and in doing so made the world a better place.” Harris served in the Milwaukee foster care system from 1980-2008. She lived near the intersection of W. Burleigh and N. 7th streets for many years. Zulkowski estimates that she cared for more than 170 children during that time. Harris was also a very devout Christian and there are a number of scenes in the family-friendly movie of church services and gospel singing. Harris died in 2009. “Margie was a Godly woman who left her mark on everyone she came in contact with,” Zulkowski said. “She was an amazing example of strength, courage and love. I hope telling my grandmother’s story will take audiences back down memory lane with their grandmothers. Or to that older person who was loving and ‘old-fashioned.’ Sometimes we don’t realize how wise and valuable these people are until they are gone," Zulkowski added. In fairness to the Milwaukee child protection services,

During the premiere State Senetor Lena Taylor presented a proclamation to Kimberley Zulkowski. it is unlikely that a situation such as the one Zulkowski endured away from her grandmother for six years would happen now. The state has made reuniting children with biological family members a priority since the early 2000s. Zulkowski and her husband Alan financed production of the movie. Principal photography took place over 14 days in Los Angeles. Additional location shots to

Thursday, April 14: On this date in 1873, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its first ruling on the recently approved Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The so-called Slaughter-House Cases a group of butchers sued claiming their rights as citizens had been violated by the the state of Louisiana under the 14th Amendment after the Louisiana state legislature granted a 25-year monopoly to a slaughterhouse in order to protect the source of drinking water for the city of New Orleans. In a divided opinion, the court found in favor of the state noting a distinction between the rights of an individual as a citizen of the U.S. and individual rights as a citizen of a state. The state dissolved the monopoly 11 years later and subsequent Supreme Court decisions have found that the 14th Amendment does not allow states to make laws which deny federal Constitutional protections, rights and freedom.

Saturday, April 16: American basketball Hall of Fame legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born on this day in 1947. Abdul-Jabbar grew up in Harlem. His birth name was Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr., and both of his parents were tall. Abdul-Jabbar grew to 7-feet2-inches. He began his professional basketball career with the Milwaukee Bucks. In his second year as a pro he helped bring the Bucks their only NBA Championship in 1971. In the summer of 1968, while attending UCLA, he took the Shahada twice and converted to Sunni Islam. He did not make his name change official until 1970. Prior to the 1975-76 season Abdul-Jabbar was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers where he won five more NBA championships. He also won a record six MVP awards and was selected to the All Star game in 19 of the 20 seasons he played. He retired in 1989 and remains the all-time scoring leader. Sunday, April 17: On this date in 1863, a black woman was forcibly removed from a horse-drawn streetcar in San Francisco. Charlotte L. Brown, the daughter of James E. and Charlotte Brown was the victim. Her father, who ran a livery stable in San Francisco, brought suit on her behalf against the Omnibus Railroad Company. The successful suit resulted in $5,000 in damages awarded as well as the right of blacks to ride the street cars. The Charlotte Brown case was one of a few successful civil rights cases brought by prominent free blacks in California to protest discrimination on public transportation. Monday, April 18: On this date in 1922, Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion, patented a wrench. Johnson constantly flouted conventions regarding the social and economic “place” of blacks in American society, especially the taboo against showing affection toward white women. In 1912, he was arrested and sentenced the following year by an allwhite jury for violating the Mann Act (transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes). He received a sentence of 366 days even though the law was not in existence when the incident for which he was charged occurred. While incarcerated, Johnson found need for a tool that would help tighten loosened fastening devices. He modified a wrench for the task and was awarded US Patent 1,413,121. Tuesday, April 19: The opening of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816 is celebrated on this date. It was the first church founded and administered in America by blacks. On June 16, 2015 a deranged white supremacist attended a Bible study there and afterward shot and killed nine members including the pastor.

Friday, April 15: May Edward Chinn, the first African American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College, was born on this date in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. After graduation in 1926 every hospital in New York City refused to grant her visiting privileges, so she opened a family practice, treating people who otherwise would not have received medical care. She often went into dangerous neighborhoods, because of her interest in improving the health conditions of her patients in Harlem. Eventually she earned a master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University in 1933 and received visiting privileges at Harlem Hospital. In 1944, the Strang Clinic hired Chinn to conduct research on cancer, and she remained there for the next 29 years. Her cancer research contributed to the development of the Pap smear, a test for early detection of cervical cancer.

Wednesday, April 20: On this date in 2004, the University of Alabama publicly apologized for the schools’ associated history of slavery against Africans in America. The apology was made to the descendants of slaves who were once owned by faculty members or who worked on the campus before the Civil War. The University of Alabama’s faculty Senate passed a resolution acknowledging and apologizing for their historical role in slavery. An overwhelming majority of the members present voted in favor of the resolution after an extended debate over amendments and discussion of the meaning of the word “atone.” An NCON Communications Publication
