One Hope Made Strong (OHMS) relocates to new home at North Division High School By Don Edward Pannell and William S. Gooden Special to the Milwaukee Times Ezzard C. White, owner of EWS Electric, LLC and longtime vocational educator, made good on a promise he made to his students of One Hope Made Strong last summer. That promise: “I will move the classes into modern space as soon as it becomes available, to achieve with them the intended purpose of the OHMS program.” That intended purpose of One Hope Made Strong (OHMS), a nonprofit 501C-3 organization, is to provide a series of free courses designed to teach a fundamental working knowl-

edge of the varied aspects of electrical theory, drafting, blueprint reading, building/ foundational structures, carpentry, welding, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing. The goal is to provide the OHMS students the means to pursue employment and a substantial living in a variety of currently in-demand industries. Since launching the program last summer, White has underwritten and taught the free classes, which met at the Interdenominational Church of the One Lost Sheep on North 8th Street and at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on North 4th Street. City and ACTS Housing join forces to address foreclosure crisis

On Friday, April 11, 2014 Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (back row, center), Common Council President Michael Murphy (front row, center left), and ACTS Housing executive director Carl Quindel (center row, purple shirt) and his staff, all took part in the Mayor's signing of a city resolution authorizing a new unique partnership between the city and ACTS housing. This partnership is part of Mayor Barrett’s Strong Neighborhoods Plan, launched in September 2013 to combat the city’s foreclosure crisis. One area of emphasis of the Strong Neighborhoods Plan is selling city-owned foreclosed properties. As part of this initiative ACTS will receive $200,000 in City support to assist with the sales of City-owned properties. The signing took place at 3543 N. 18th Street, Milwaukee, which is the home of Henry and Ana Vivas, past participants of the ACTS homebuyer program.

NAACP WI State Conference of Branches: "WI needs to be more aggressive at tapping into its vast renewable energy sources for affordable energy and jobs"

The NAACP WI State Conference of Branches released the findings of the NAACP “Just Energy Policies: Reducing Pollution and Creating Jobs-Wisconsin report on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Milwaukee NAACP Branch’s office. The press conference was held to discuss “Wisconsin’s tremendous potential to meet the NAACP’s recommended standards while increasing job opportunities and energy affordability for its residents and more aggressively tap into its vast renewable energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal” and offered suggestions on how these sources “will help Wisconsin become a more resilient state.” Additionally, the NAACP delegation discussed how the state could “expand on its current hiring and procurement policies to ensure that all residents are benefiting from the energy sector’s expansion.” NAACP officers at the press conference included: Wendell J. Harris, 1st Vice President Wisconsin Conference of Branches; members Rosie Caradine Lewis, Jamal E. Smith, Jacqueline Patterson; NAACP Youth Advisor Al Daniels; Waukesha County NAACP Branch 1st Vice President Montre J. Moore and Wisconsin Conference Branches President Lillie B. Wilson.

One Hope Made Strong (OHMS) relocates to new home at North Division High School

(Continued from pg. 1) Yet, while having a meeting place, White and his supporters have never wavered from their primary focus of finding suitable facilities for classroom space that could accommodate the program’s 150 students. That changed when a new space, located at North Division High School, became available through a collaborative effort with Mr. White, MPS and other community leaders. This space will provide a much needed modern instructional training facility to the men and women who have taken advantage of the free training offered by White’s generosity and tutelage. This collaboration between Milwaukee Public Schools Recreational Department and Ezzard White’s company is making it possible for participants to acquire careers, not just jobs that will provide more than “livable” wages for years to come. The acquisition of the new OHMS teaching space was the result of a community wide effort by many local leaders. Among them Milwaukee Public Schools Supervisor Percy Eddie, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, and State Senator Lena Taylor, who along with other invited guests, were all present Monday, April 21, 2014 at the OHMS moving celebration. MPS Supervisor Percy Eddie acknowledged the collaboration as a first step for the future of these students. “It is an honor and a pleasure working with Mr. White, because it’s not often a student gets to help a teacher. We started a partnership when he taught me at Milwaukee Tech, where he watched over me then, and he is still watching over me. This is an honor for Milwaukee Recreation to have One Hope Made Strong here at North Division. What I can say to the students is do

Congresswoman Moore, an alumna of North Division, commented on how delighted she was to have the OHMS program at North Division. “It’s good to have training that cannot be shipped overseas. Construction is not being shipped overseas. Unfortunately many of our young men and women are not trained or being trained in this area. I’m sure this is the beginning of a great and prosperous collaboration.” The fact did not escape Senator Lena Taylor that White’s efforts did not depend on government support. “It is so good to see someone step forward, acknowledging that to whom much is given, much is required. Mr. White has skills and decided to give back. This is the kind of community effort we need; don’t wait on someone else to do it. I am proud to see a facility like this being used towards this effort. I have seen how this has grown from the last time we met. Although there were not dollars to do it they made it happen. I am a believer that when you set out

to do right, doors will open. Next time we meet I know we won’t have room for all the people that will be trying to get into the program. Keep up the good work.” Opening doors is something School Board Director Annie Woodward was happy to do and be a part of the Monday evening celebration. Director Woodward views the new OHMS tenant as an integral part of helping to make North Division a stronger school. “I just see this project as a part of helping us to grow into a powerful institution that will assist in educating people. I am looking forward to doing whatever I can to support this program. But what we need is more people in the community to come out and support the efforts, not just tonight, but continuously as the program progresses. I ask the entire community to come out and support this potential successful project that Mr. White has provided to us.” As Mr. White took the podium he referred to the banner listing the classes that would be offered at the new location. White emphasized to the students, “With every breath within me I am going to make sure you get

every one of these modules we have to offer. I want you to walk away with something you can use. But don’t think job, I want you to think career! I want you to remember that these opportunities did not fall from the sky. A lot of people have paid a big debt so you can be able to get into this field. There is no better investment you can make than to invest in yourself. I am committed to you one hundred percent with a lot of blood, sweat and tears.” Mr. White thanked longtime friend and supporter, Jim Gaillard from Pyramid Electric for his friendship and assistance in providing some of those tears with his skills. One of the OHMS recipients, Tyesha Townsel, summed the program up by praising the coordinators of the program. “Not one student has paid one cent towards the training we have received in the last six to eight months. They ensure we have all the necessary tools and equipment to complete the classes. That to me shows a lot of faith. A lot people say they believe in you, but who actually puts their own money behind it? Who picks total strangers off the street and funds their hopes, their dreams,

Youth inspired about higher education

A number of high school youth are much more inspired to attend a university following the SDC 2014 Spring College Tour. Nine young men and women from youth programs at the Social Development Commission took part in the weeklong trip during Spring Break. That tour included stops at universities in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Ohio. They visited seven colleges including Philadelphia University, Lincoln University, Georgetown, Howard University, West Virginia State, Charleston University and Ohio State. The college tour participants were able to view a variety of university sizes and settings as well as learn how to apply for admission and financial aid. The group included three high SDC Photo school seniors who took the opportunity to ap- Pictured (from left) are Douglas Lockwood, Taylor McKnight-Loply to several of the schools during the visits. We can pay him back by defying the statistics, silencing the naysayers, overcoming our oppressors and achieve our certification in construction and labor and getting that job Mr. White is always talking about. I believe we can do it. All we need to do is believe in ourselves!”

Being Frank Wisconsin teens are smoking, drinking and having less sex according to the 2013 Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey. This is good news for parents and society overall. The drop in areas such as unprotected sex is a great thing for those not wishing to be grandparents at 33. There are areas

3

Sweet and sour sixteen

of concern that need to be addressed and they focus around the female teen. The survey had some significant decreases in areas many thought would either stay the same or go up. Only 33 percent of students had taken a puff on a cigarette compared to 64 percent in 2001. Similar decreases were

shown in alcohol consumption. Only one in three students had taken a drink in the 2014 survey compared to almost half in 1993. The areas of concern deal with the female teenager. In today's society teens seem to grow up fast. We are living in a time where everything that was taboo

a few decades ago is not so bad now. Many problems females face today would usually come after they would be considered grown in the past. In many cases because of the fast paced American lifestyle both male and female teens grow up quickly. The survey shows that many female teens are not handling

this fast pace all that well. A teenager should be full of life and enjoying the last few years of childhood. The high school years should be the springboard to a new positive adulthood. Yet according to the survey one in three female teens have felt hopeless for up to two weeks. During this time many reported they felt so despondent that they stopped doing some activities. This is a far cry from the liveliness of Joanie from Happy Days. What could be pushing young females to such a mental state when they have yet to face the trials of the IRS? The survey also stated one in four teenage females have inflicted self-harm to themselves. This is alarming because that means something is pushing these young ladies to go to extreme measures on themselves. Imagine cutting or burning yourself for lying to your spouse. Many people would either be ashes or bled dry. But those are adults, not teenagers. True, everyone has a high school crush or sweetheart but to set fire to your arm over them is a bit extreme. Society has to start looking deeply into what is shaping the mentalities of our children. The fast paced lifestyle depicted in music and movies may be setting teens of both sexes up for misery after 20. Everyone has some issues growing up either with parents, friends or romantic interests. But when people start feeling hopeless for a week or two or cutting themselves in a dark room there is a problem. On the flip side drinking and unprotected sex is down among Wisconsin teens. The drop in smoking alone is one thing people can cheer about. As we celebrate the increased awareness of Wisconsin teens society has to keep vigilant. There are some issues out there especially pertaining to the teen female that need to be looked into. These esteem issues could lead to more destructive behavior than a drink or a one-night stand could ever become. Rebuilding our Community By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Staying in shape “You’re in pretty good shape for the shape you are in” Those were the words of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, in his book called “You’re Only Old Once!” It was published in 1986 and with a subtitle “A Book for Obsolete Children.” It was a book that focused about aging which chronicles an old man’s journey through a clinic. Since 1957, many generations of both young and old have enjoyed reading his books. Who can forget some of the classics… “Cat In The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Horton Hears a Who!” to just name a few. Many of his works have become basic reading for kids and include 11 television specials, four feature films, a Broadway musical and four television series. As a graduate of Dartmouth College in 1925, he

found his love in being a writer, poet and cartoonist. In all, he published 46 children’s books and often characterized them by using imaginative characters, bright colors and unforgettable rhymes. He also wrote a pair of books for adults and one for graduating students… “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!. Dr. Seuss in his own way touched on a number of subjects including life, war, growing up and politics. Throughout his extraordinary career, he used his gifts and talents to help shape and reshape our lives in unique ways. Similarly today, there is a great need for people to rise up and use their God given gifts and talents to bring about positive change in our neighborhoods and to inspire a new generation to live a quality life. We perhaps cannot do it the way Dr. Seuss did it, through his writing, cartoons, books, television and films, but we can do something that makes a

difference. We all can make a difference in what we say, how we conduct ourselves and through our actions. This can be accomplished by setting goals, staying focused, believing in a mission and following a dream or vision for a better world. “In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process is never endings until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility,” according to Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of United States (1933-45). The question is, what kind of shape are you in? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, or call 414-571-5015. By Rev. Al Sharpton President National Action Network People often equate summer with inaction; a time to kick back and do as little as possible. Well in 2014, we must do the opposite -- this must be a freedom summer. Everything from voting rights, minimum wage, women's rights, fair pay, health care, LGBT rights, protection of unemployment insurance/other programs and so much more is on the table in 2014. This Election Day, many of the things that we value as a nation are up for a vote either directly or indirectly. In short, who we elect will determine what direction we go as a country. And make no mistake about it: because there is so much on the line, we are witnessing renewed attacks on our right to vote. Fifty years after the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, there are modern schemes to try and take away your vote. Well, we

at National Action Network (NAN) will not sit by idly and watch as the fundamental rights so many fought and died for are being eliminated -- and neither should you. Beginning April 30, NAN will start a recruiting drive urging people to volunteer a day, a week, three weeks, or however long they can to address voter suppression. Folks can log onto our website -- NationalActionNetwork.net -- and sign up to volunteer to go to one of the following eight states: Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Virginia and Louisiana. Following training, they will work on a twoprong strategy to combat new voter suppression tactics. First, they will join those who are challenging subliminal methods of eliminating voter rights like new ID laws and a reduction/end to early voting days and 'souls to the polls.' The second part of this strategy is registering people to vote in areas where we cannot eliminate voter suppression schemes. Whether that's driving seniors to get new IDs, or babysitting children so that their parents can take time to get copies of their birth certificate, or whether that means holding townhalls to educate communities, when you volunteer, you can help push back against modernday suppression.

When I was growing up, my family and loved ones ensured that I learned of the Freedom Riders, civil rights activists and movements that worked tirelessly to make change a reality. It is an insult to their work and their sacrifice that the voting rights of so many citizens are once again under assault. Whether you consider yourself a liberal, a conservative, a libertarian or none of the above, it is imperative that you protect the American right to vote. Too many gave up their livelihoods, their comfort and in some cases, their lives so that we could practice the notion of one person, one vote. Allowing these new voter suppression tactics to continue is offensive to all those who struggled before us. People sometimes forget that midterm elections are just as significant as presidential elections. The U.S. Senate and Congress will make decisions on health care, a jobs policy, Supreme Court appointments if necessary, unemployment protections, programs for the disenfranchised, budgets and so much more. We must participate in this year's election and help shape what country we want to be. There is simply too much at stake for us not to be in the trenches. If we do not participate and if we do not take concrete steps to (Continued on pg. 14)

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

The pain of loneliness (Week 3) “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” - Joshua 1:5 Loneliness fosters a selfdefeating psychology that makes it difficult to escape its clutches. Complicating matters, lonely people are likely to encounter a variety of societal responses that marginalize them even further. The longer loneliness lasts, the more challenging it can be to break the mindsets and judgments that contribute to maintaining one’s isolation. In his piece, “Why Loneliness Is a Trap and How to Break Free” by Guy Winch, Ph.D., in the Squeaky Wheel (Psychology Today, September 2013), Dr. Winch describes how loneliness can be ensnaring: 1. Loneliness impacts one’s

perceptions such that the lonely one is likely to view their existing relationships more negatively and pessimistically. The lonely one assumes people aren’t interested in their company and that if they reach out to them they will reject or turn them down. As a result the lonely one takes little initiative and finds excuses to turn down invitations when they do get them. 2. Negativity and reluctance to give friends the benefit of the doubt creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in which one’s own reactions and avoidance pushes them away even further. Because one may remain blind to their part in creating the distance, they see their withdrawal as confirmation of their fears and become even more convinced others no longer care about them. 3. Loneliness is very visible to others who are likely to label the lonely one as less interesting and less appealing

as social prospects. This stigma, combined with the negativity and suspicion the lonely one might project in social situations makes it challenging for the lonely person to establish new social and romantic connections. 4. Loneliness is contagious. Studies of social networks found that over time, lonely people ‘infect’ those around them such that they too become pushed to the periphery of their social networks. As a result, their remaining friends and social contacts might provide diminishing opportunities for social con-

nection. 5. Finally, the more socially and emotionally isolated lonely people are the more their social skills and relationship ‘muscles’ tend to atrophy. Skill sets often weaken when unused and one’s ability to connect and relate can easily get rusty after a period of isolation. If things go badly when the lonely person tries to use these ‘muscles’ they don’t attribute the failure or rejection to their skill sets being rusty but see it as further evidence of their fundamental undesirability. Beloved, I realize many people reading this series are lonely and have been experiencing loneliness for a very long time. You may feel like the world has forgotten you. You may even feel like God has forgotten you. Did you know that God can use your loneliness to achieve His purposes in your life? Sometimes He allows such situations

What’s Happening?

Students at Greenfield school to learn savvy savings lessons from U.S. Bank K-8th grade students at Greenfield Bilingual School located at 1711 S. 35th St. in Milwaukee learned fun and interactive savings lessons from U.S. Bank employee volunteers. The savings lessons are part of the 18th annual Teach Children to Save Day, a nationwide education campaign promoting useful money and savings habits to students. The volunteers visited the students on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Across the company, many U.S. Bank employees met with local youth to explore ways to save money by budgeting, “living green”, understanding the difference between needs and wants, how to identify expenses, trade-offs and ways to cut spending. Teach Children to Save Day took place Friday, April 11. Some bankers will meet with students on other days. This year, U.S. Bank is partnering with the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) and the SIFMA Foundation for a new initiative called Invest it Forward. It is designed to help youth understand how the capital markets work, and how to harness it for their own benefit – to save and invest for an education or to start a new business. Established by the American Bankers Association in 1997, Teach Children to Save lessons have reached six million young people across the United States through the commitment of 130,500 banker volunteers. In 2013, savings lessons were taught by more than 1,300 U.S. Bank employee volunteers to 32,000 students for Teach Children to Save Day. U.S. Bank Financial Genius is proud to support and promote the American Bankers Association’s Teach Children to Save curriculum. Visit UWM to sample life as a student Brochures, Facebook and websites are great ways to learn about colleges and universities, but a campus visit is the only way to experience what life on a campus is really like. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is welcoming high school sophomores and juniors to spend a day on campus for Meet Milwaukee on Friday, May 2, or Friday, July 18. Events start at 8:30 a.m. and run through 3:30 p.m. Students can register online by going to the UWM home page at uwm.edu and clicking on the link to Meet Milwaukee (meetmilwaukee. uwm.edu). High school students visiting campus on either of these days will have a chance to get the inside scoop on campus life from current students, talk with advisers, tour the campus and its residence halls, and learn about the many majors UWM offers – some of them unique in Wisconsin and even in the U.S. The university also offers a wide array of online courses, with more than 35 percent of students enrolled in at least one online or hybrid class. A visit to campus can give high school students a real feel for the university and its many opportunities. UWM’s location on Milwaukee’s East Side gives students easy access to the city’s sports and music events, festivals and in-

ternship opportunities. And, the Lake Michigan beaches are only five minutes away. With its own Pantherfest, Division I sports teams and more than 300 student organizations, the university offers plenty of social and entertainment activities on or near campus. The Panther family includes nearly 28,000 students of all ages and backgrounds. Last year’s freshman class was the most diverse ever, with 30 percent students of color. Students come from 49 states, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than 1,300 international students represent 83 different countries. And, with 1,400 enrolled veterans, service members and their dependents, UWM educates more of those who’ve served their country than any other university in Wisconsin. The Princeton Review named UWM a “2014 Best in the Midwest” university, based on overall academic excellence and student reviews. Student success UWM focuses on helping students succeed. For example, new students can request a mentor – either a student peer or a staff member. The Student Success Center (ssc.uwm.edu) is a onestop shop to help all firstyear, transfer and returning adult students handle the academic and personal chal-

lenges of that transition year. It offers services like free tutoring through Panther Academic Support Services (PASS) at numerous locations around campus. Besides PASS, there is additional help available for all students at the Writing Center’s two locations. Also, UWM’s Academic Opportunity Center provides extra support to students who need to develop their academic skills and

adjust to university life. Unique learning opportunities For a truly powerful college experience, UWM offers a number of unique learning opportunities for undergraduates: • UWM’s Honors College gives motivated undergraduates choice coursework with extra support, like small class sizes, an Honors study room at the Golda Meir Li-

brary, the newly opened Honors Hall and special advisers. • First-year Learning Communities: The university’s Living Learning Communities (LLCs) bring together groups of students with similar academic interests to occupy the same floor of the residence halls. Some professors actually hold office hours and teach where students live. • The Office of Undergraduate Research encourages students to get involved in research early. Students are paired with faculty researchers in a shared field of interest, giving them the opportunity to experience what graduate students do. Money matters The Meet Milwaukee days will also give students a chance to meet with financial advisers for information about paying for their education. Financial aid takes a variety of forms, from scholarships and grants (which don’t have to be repaid), to fixed-rate, low-interest loans and federal work-study options. For more information about UWM and other campus visit opportunities, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at contact.uwm.edu (live chat, email, call, mail or connect to social media from one location!)

Bulletin Board Siefert students, staff walk 18.25 miles for heart health When staff at Siefert Elementary heard about the National Walking Day planned by the American Heart Association and promoted by MPS Employee Wellness, they knew they wanted to take the idea and “walk” with it. A walk-athon was scheduled and for six hours, students and staff from Siefert walked laps around the school’s block. Teachers were challenged to create an educational chant for their students to recite as they walked their laps. Some classes recited letters, colors, sounds or shapes, while others recited continents, states, capital cities and math facts. The school community was encouraged to make a commitment to live healthier by participating in the event. Parents and district administrators were also invited to walk with the students. At the end of the day, Siefert students, staff and special guests had taken 41,301 steps and walked a total of 18.25 miles! Way to go! MPS Photo

Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Mighty minis: The fascinating trace minerals (part 1) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. What you don’t know about minerals may surprise you Amazingly, each minute, three billion of our cells die and three billion new ones are created. Our lives depend on the quality of our cells. In turn, that depends on the nutrients we take into our bodies. For the best result, we need the most nutritious sources of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, water, and absorbable vitamins and minerals. Few people realize that minerals may be more essential to our well-being than vitamins. It’s a partnership: Without minerals, we can’t use vitamins. Minerals are required to support human biochemical processes. They serve structural and functional roles and form electrolytes. Our blood, bones, nervous system, cells, tissues, and immune integrity all rely on minerals to keep us thriving. Adequate mineral intake

is the foundation of good health. Although the total number of nutrient minerals that are absolutely necessary for life is not known for any organism, about twenty are necessary for mammals. Nutrient minerals are categorized as major or macro- and trace or micro-. In this issue, we begin our discussion of the trace minerals, covering chromium, copper, iodine, manganese, and fluoride. Our bodies are made up of two types of substances: organic and inorganic. Organic compounds are living and contain the element carbon. They are produced by plants and animals. (Think kale and rabbit.) Inorganic substances occur alone or in compounds and are not produced by plants or animals but occur naturally on the planet. (Think rocks and stars.) Minerals are inorganic substances. They are absorbed by plants and eaten by animals. Minerals form only 5 percent of the typical human diet. Macrominerals are those required by adults in amounts greater than 100 mg/day and make up less than 1 percent of total body weight. Trace minerals are those required in amounts

Rust College A'Capella Choir to perform at Tabernacle The Rust College A’Capella Choir, under the direction of Dorothy Lee Jones, performs their spring concert in Milwaukee at Tabernacle Community Baptist Church, 2500 W. Medford Avenue on Saturday evening, May 3, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. The choir is renowned for its broad repertoire, which feature a broad array of classical, semi-classical, spirituals, opera, contemporary and traditional gospel music. Over the years, the choir has captured the attention of prestigious audiences worldwide. Some of the choir’s noteworthy performances and awards include: A tour of Zimbabwe in 2001, two European trips as Ambassadors of Friendship, First Place in the 13th Annual American Negro Spiritual Festival, Cincinnati Music Hall, Cincinnati, OH (1994), the 1982 and 1983 World’s Fair, annual tours throughout the Midwest and south and guest appearances on several regional radio and

television programs, including the International Protestant Hour, which is heard in more than 100 foreign countries and the United States. The A’Cappella Choir was organized by Natalie Doxey who charmed audiences with her intimate arrangements of Negro Spirituals and classical renditions in 1936. The purpose of the choir was and still is to serve as a public relations entity to help spread the good news regarding Rust College. The community’s presence would be greatly appreciated. Please come and enjoy the performance on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Admission to this concert is free. Rev. Don Darius Butler is pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

of 1-100 mg/day and make up less than 0.01 percent of total body weight. Ultra-trace minerals generally are defined as minerals that are required in amounts less than 1 mg/day. These are extremely minute amounts, far more tiny than a smidgen. For example, 1 gram (1000 mg/ milligrams) = 1/4t. One milligram is 1/1000 of a gram or of 1/1000 of a quarter teaspoon! Whether or not we need to supplement minerals depends not just on what we eat but on the quantity and balance of minerals that are in the soil and water, nurturing the plants we eat. (And, likewise, what the animals we eat, eat.) Ready to be surprised? Chromium (Cr)4: Chromium is the major molecule in a compound named glucose tolerance factor (GTF). GTF is involved in the regulation of insulin and glucose (blood sugar)

levels. Surprisingly, only 10 in 100 Americans get enough chromium. Why? 1) The mineral is scarce in our soil and water and 2) what little we do get disappears in the digestion of the huge amount of junk food we consume. Sugary and starchy foods become glucose during digestion. This triggers the release of insulin, which carries the sugar into the cells where it is stored for fuel. The less chromium available, the more insulin is needed. High blood insulin levels are dangerous. Glucose intolerance is the main symptom of diabetes. Savvy people with diabetes supplement with chromium to support glucose metabolism, improve glucose tolerance, normalize insulin levels, and encourage the use of fat rather than carbohydrate as an energy source. In diabetic and overweight individuals, Cr supplements have been shown to reduce triglyceride (blood fat) levels by almost 20 percent. In addition, chromium lowers serum cholesterol and raises HDL (“good” cholesterol). Because it is crucial to both blood sugar and cholesterol metabolism, chromium is used in weight loss programs. Supplements of 400

mcg have helped overweight women lose about 50 percent more fat in three months than the placebo group. (Cr also helps those with hypoglycemia.) Although popular interest has developed in using Cr supplements to improve lean body mass, multiple studies have failed to show any clinically important changes. Since only 1 in 10 of us are getting adequate chromium, supplementing is a good idea. RDA: Adults, 50200 mcg, although up to 600 mcg are frequently used for weight loss and blood sugar control. Vitamin C enhances the uptake of Cr. There are no reports of adverse effects.7 Sources: Brewer’s yeast, nutritional yeast, and calves’ liver are the best sources. Oysters, whole grains, wheat bran, and potatoes with the skins are also helpful. (Continued next week) Reprinted With Permission Copyright © Nutrition News 2014 Home of the "Is It Healthy?" Freedom Summer 2014 (Continued from pg. 4) empower others, then we cannot complain later. The power is in our hands, and we must utilize it productively. After NAN's historic convention this year, we are initiating this freedom summer project. Beginning April 30, people can visit our site, pick the state they would like to volunteer in and the duration of time they would like to do so. When President Obama addressed our convention earlier this month, he passionately discussed the protection of voting rights at length. He referenced

ways in which voters are being marginalized, he shared Attorney General Holder's work defending voting rights and he encouraged everyone to participate in our election process. "Every obstacle put in our path should remind us of the power we hold in our hands each time we pull that lever, or fill that oval, or touch that screen," said the president. "We just have to harness that power. We've got to create a national network committed to taking action. We can call it the National Action Network." That is precisely what we have called our organization, and we will continue living up to that name.
