Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, elected three years ago, spent a part of his day Thursday, May 8, 2014 with pastors and members of Pastors United at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 2505 W. Cornell Street. During his remarks, the County Executive said before entering politics that he spent much of his time in real estate; and working with a foundation which supported education, human rights, the arts and working with groups that had some interaction with Milwaukee County government. From that vantage point, Abele said, from the outside, he watched county services and the number of individuals being served reduced “department by department.” Rather than complain, the County Executive said he took his own advice and decided to do something about what he saw, which resulted in him running for County Executive. Since being elected, Abele said

If requested, the County Execituve said he would request the 41 department heads of county government to make presentations at the Pastors United Thursday morning meetings. He also answered questions raised by members of the audience.

Summer' for the City of Milwaukee In case you didn’t know it, this week in the City of Milwaukee has been proclaimed “Cease Fire Sabbath Week” by Mayor Tom Barrett who held a press conference in an area plagued by crime, which is being committed disproportionately by African American males. And with summertime just around the corner, the mayor said at a Tuesday, May 13, 2014 press conference, held in front of Tabernacle Community Baptist Church, 2500 W. Medford, that he wanted to make sure he and other elected officials, members of the clergy, the private sector are doing everything to make this a safe summer. “As I have said countless times, my vision is that I want a city where grandma can sit on the front porch and watch her grandkids play on the front yard this summer,” the mayor said, adding, “I want it on Medford; I want it on

22nd Street; and 25th Street. I want it on every single street in the city. That is my vision and the goal we are trying to achieve.” The mayor went on to say that in some parts of the city, that there was too much violence. Moreover, Mayor Barrett said he is often asked whether Milwaukee was a safe city. His response: “As long as you do not deal illegal drugs or guns, the city is safe for you.” He went on to explain that if individuals who engaged in illegal drugs or guns were putting their life and the lives of others in danger. The mayor said the Cease Fire Sabbath will culminate with an event on Sunday, May 18, 2014 when he and an entourage of other elected officials, and representative from law enforcement visit churches. The mayor also said this year’s Cease Fire Sabbath had

expanded to include activities throughout the week that will provide opportunities for residents to become involved in violence prevention discussions and activities, which included a Tuesday evening community forum hosted by Rep. Mandela Barnes in the City Hall rotunda as well as an opportunity for residents to attend the Milwaukee Police Department’s Spring Merit Awards. The mayor said the rationale for including residents of the community in such events is for him, as mayor, is to have a city where the residents and members of the police department respect each other. Moreover, the mayor Barrett said he wanted citizens to see members of the Police department receiving the Merit Awards for putting their lives on the line and being in harm’s way. “I want people to see our police officers at their best and this

opportunity to see our police officers at their best.” The mayor also announced a community walk schedule for Saturday, May 17, 2014, which starts at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2500 W. Medford Ave. Residents will also be able to participate in a Gun Buy Back which will also be held at Tabernacle from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Residents who turn in a shotgun or rifle will receive a $50 bank card, and $100 for a handgun, and $200 for an assault weapon. Some $53,000 have been raised to purchase guns which, after they have being cleared by the Milwaukee Police Department, “will be melted down and forged into gardening tools. We’re turning swords into plow shares,” the mayor quipped.

Sterling wrong about Magic and his contributions to the African American community Having now learned the full story about Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his remarks about legendary sports icon Earvin "Magic" Johnson, I am left stunned with utter disbelief and disgust. As Mr. Sterling rambles on with some harebrained notion about Magic’s lack of a contribution to African American communities throughout the nation, Sterling’s willful ignorance is evident right here in Milwaukee. Mr. Johnson left a legacy in our city with his acquisition of the old Capitol Court Mall, which he transformed into the largest retail development in the city, the Midtown Shopping Center. Anchored by the Starbucks that Magic still owns, he gave the City of Milwaukee a gift with his vision of investment in a blighted property, and created more than 1,000 jobs with his catalytic development. No one can question how much Mr. Johnson's vision has impacted the community surrounding the Midtown Shopping Center development. When many investors and brokers were looking elsewhere for a return on their investments, he saw val-

ue in the African American community and gave the area an economic boost—and a long-term identity. Although Mr. Johnson has no equity investment in the current development other than the legendary Starbucks, when customers visit the retail development, their reactions range from awe to pride. I grew up as Magic Johnson dazzled the world with championship after championship, in addition to NBA and playoff series MVP honors. Yet he always remembered his African American and Midwestern roots. So when a repugnant racist and bigot like Donald Sterling tries to destroy the image of

a legendary African American icon who recognized value in our city, we should all remember that Mr. Johnson believed in us and put his money where his heart is.

Celebrating the continuum of motherhood (week 2) This month we are celebrating the continuum of motherhood. A continuum is something that keeps on going, changing slowly over time. Therefore, when we celebrate the continuum of motherhood, we acknowledge that since the beginning of time, motherhood, like the four seasons, has kept on going, but it has slowly changed over time. Mothers do not come in a “one-size/fit all” package, but every mother is special in her own right. In continuation of our articles celebrating motherhood, the following are 10 reasons why mothers are important: 1. If it weren’t for your mom, you wouldn’t be breathing right now. If nothing else, you should thank her for that. 2. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family. They provide the holding

place for everyone’s feelings and do their best to keep us from being hurt. 3. Who would kiss your boo-boos to make it all better if she weren’t around? Mothers have the magic touch (and kiss) to help us heal our wounds, physical and emotional. 4. Truly, our mothers worked hard and made sacrifices, so our lives would be better. There are not a lot of people willing to do that, so let her know you appreciate it. 5. Mothers are forgiving— so forgive her in return. Perhaps nothing will be as valuable a gift to both of you as forgiveness. Open your heart and drop your resentments. Now that’s love. 6. When you want to climb the tallest mountain, your mother will make your lunch for you. She is the one who will support your dreams when no one else will. She will also remind you to wear

important it was. 10. A mother’s smile, when it is directed toward you, makes your day a whole lot better. All she needs is to know that she has helped you to be and feel your best. Say thank you. Happy Mother’s Day! For the next two weeks we will use this column to publish tributes from readers on behalf of their mother.

clean underwear. 7. Her boundaries made you a better person. You may not have liked some of her decisions, especially when you wanted to party with your friends, but she did keep you out of trouble. Look at some of your friends without a mom who have cared that much. 8. A mother’s ears and eyes hear and see everything. They also have a computer-

like memory for all the good (and some of the bad) that came your way. It’s nice to have someone with whom you can reminisce about your whole life. 9. Mom taught you to be a functioning adult. That was her job, and without that, making it through the modern world would be very hard. Your mom may have forced you to do your homework, but now you see how

Bulletin Board MPS’ 5- and 6-year graduation rates continue to grow, but more growth still needed

District efforts have yielded growth among students who may have otherwise dropped out; 4-year rate has held steady over the last four years Milwaukee Public Schools’ five- and six-year high school graduation rates continue to grow, according to data released by the state Thursday, May 8, 2014 but further growth is still needed. The growth shows that MPS’ efforts to target students who may have otherwise dropped out – such as Project Direct Graduation and the district’s GED programs – are yielding results. The district’s five-year graduation rate grew to 71 percent for 2012-13, up from 70.8 percent in 201112 and up from 70.4 percent

in 2010-11, the first year the rate was available. MPS’ six-year rate grew to 73.6 percent for 2012-13, up from 72.8 percent in 201112, the first year the rate was available. The four-year graduation rate for 2012-13 stands at 60.6 percent, which is roughly in line with the four-year rate from 2009-10, the first year of the new four-year rate calculation. MPS is engaged in several efforts to increase the fouryear and the overall gradua- hensive plans in literacy, tion rate, including: mathematics and science, to - Implementing compre- help ensure students have

Keep a lid on vacation costs Summer vacation is right around the corner. I'm not a big believer in pre-planning every single detail – sometimes the best vacation moments are spontaneous. But unless your rich uncle is paying for the trip, you'll need to do a certain amount of preparation or your budget will fly out the window. You do have a vacation budget, right? If not, here are a few suggestions for creating one and some costsaving ideas to help keep expenses down: • First, be realistic about what you can afford. If your vacation will take more than a month or two to pay off, you may want to scale back on this year's trip and start setting aside money now for next year. When building a trip budget, try to anticipate all potential expenses. Consider things like: • Airfare-related expenses. Include taxes and fees for items like changing flights, extra leg room, prior-

ity boarding, Wi-Fi access, meals, and checked, oversized or overweight baggage. Kayak.com, Airfarewatchdog.com and Travelnerd. com provide handy charts that compare various fees for popular airlines; however, always double-check the airline's own posted rules before booking your flight. • Transportation to and from the airport – at home and all travel locations. • Car rentals. Factor in taxes, gas, fill-up penalties and

insurance (check your auto insurance and credit card policies to ensure you don't pay for duplicate coverage). • Hotel/lodging. Don't forget taxes and other local fees, charges for phone/Internet, room service, early check-in or departure, gratuities, etc. Hotel room rates often are based on double occupancy. Although kids usually can stay for free, many hotels charge extra for additional adults. •Entertainment. Include

meals and snacks, event admission and ticketordering charges, transit passes or taxis, sporting equipment rental, babysitters, and special clothing or accessory requirements (sunscreen, hiking boots, etc.) • Throw in an extra 10 or 15 percent for unanticipated expenses – lost luggage, flat tire, etc. Search for deals on flights, hotels and rental cars at comparison sites like Orbitz.com, Kayak. com, Priceline.com, Hotwire. com, Hotels.com and Travelzoo.com. But beware: Before clicking "confirm," make sure the final price matches the initial quote. I've seen fares jump $50 or more in just minutes or had the seat I was booking suddenly become unavailable. A few additional tips: Follow and "like" airlines and ticketing sites on Facebook and Twitter. They'll often share sales, discounts and promotional codes with their

We are McDonald’s

followers. If the airfare goes down after you've purchased your ticket, ask the airline or ticketing site to refund the difference – it couldn't hurt to ask. Print and carry a copy of your airline's Contract of Carriage, which outlines your rights and the airline's obligations should your flight be cancelled or delayed for reasons besides weather or other "acts of God." Consider vacation rentals listed on sites like Airbnb. com, VRBO.com and HomeAway.com. You can often find cheaper accommodations with more space and amenities than hotels offer. Before booking a hotel room online, call the individual property to see if they can beat the company's posted rate. Also ask for member discounts for organizations you belong to like AAA or AARP.

ANTHONY LEE, GENERAL MANAGER EXCEPTIONAL EMPLOYEE

Anthony started as a crew team member at a Milwaukee McDonald’s in 1986. After 10 years of working in different Milwaukee-area restaurants, he was promoted to swing manager in 1996. In July of 2005, Anthony went to and graduated from Hamburger University® – a milestone required to be promoted to store manager. He was promoted to store manager in 2005. Marshall Chay says Anthony is, “very outgoing, always a sound leader and puts costumers first.” Anthony says his favorite part about his job is taking care of customers – hospitality is very important to him. In his role as store manager, he enjoys mentoring the younger crew employees. As a person who has truly grown and climbed the ladder in the Chay organization, Anthony likes to remind the younger generations that hard work does pay off. Outside of work, this outstanding employee likes to bowl, play basketball, travel and spend time with his grandchildren. Anthony is married with five children, and two grandchildren.

Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Mighty minis: The fascinating trace minerals (part 3) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Fluoride (F): We mention fluoride last because it is designated beneficial, not essential. Unlike the other minerals, our lives don’t depend on it. Fluoride protects the teeth by bonding with dental calcium.14 In fact, fluoridation of public water supplies has been endorsed by over 90 professional health organizations as the most effective dental public health measure in existence. Despite this, fluoridization of the water supply remains controversial. A paper from the Program in Dental Public Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, recommends that infants and young children not be given fluoride. Xylitol is a

much safer and more effective choice. A doubleblind, placebocontrolled study of 2,630 children compared a standard fluoride toothpaste with one that also contained 10 percent xylitol. Over a three-year period, children given the xylitol-enriched toothpaste developed notably fewer cavities than those using the fluoride-only toothpaste. America is the only industrialized country still fluoridating water. In spite of this, about half of the US population still fails to receive the maximum benefits possible from community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride products. Supplements aren’t necessary. Adequate Intake: Men, 4 mg; women, 3 mg; children, 2 mg. Sources: Seafood, tea, and foods cooked in fluoridated water. Mineral Chelation Just take a look at minerals in their raw state. How in the world does our body use

them? Because minerals are inorganic, the body attempts to convert them into a biological (organic) compound through a process called chelation (key-lay-shen). This is a specific molecular reaction called bonding that takes place between a molecule and a mineral, forming a new compound. When we eat, chelation happens during digestion to facilitate transportation of minerals across the intestinal wall. The end form is called a chelate (key’ late). Most of us simply can’t consume the recommended daily allowance of minerals from food so we depend on supplements. Mineral supplements that are not chelated may not be absorbed.

Fortunately, researchers have developed special organic forms known as mineral amino acid chelates. These allow our bodies to absorb the minerals. The molecular compound making a mineral into a chelate is called a ligand. The choice of ligand used by a manufacturer is very important. Minerals can bond with many ligands. Some are so large that they are bigger than a cell and must be broken down to be used, a back-to-square-one scenario. Recently, I listened to an arresting HealthQuest podcast called “The Truth About Minerals”. The featured guest was Max Motyka, RPh, of Albion Advanced Nutrition. Max used the amino acid glycine in talking about ligands. He noted that glycine produces a chelate that can be absorbed at a highly efficient rate. Going on to explained that Albion uses a “flash dry” process that results in a product with a guaranteed mineral content

range. Albion is so confident that its chelation process is 100 percent effective that they affix the Albion Gold Medallion seal on packages containing their product. Albion’s human mineral products are called glycinates. Other forms of chelation are citrates, orotates, succinates, picolinates, and aspartates. To my knowledge, these forms have been serving the public well for many years. In particular, citrate is widely recommended as a carrier for calcium and magnesium (macrominerals). Helping an older adult? Starting family involvement in planning Have you found yourself more involved in the daily life and cares of a loved one who has been living independently? Perhaps you are providing meals, rides, house work, home chores or reminder calls. Are you beginning to think they are not safe or need to make some changes? As long as your loved one is mentally competent the first step in the planning process is to discuss your concerns with them. If your (older) family member doesn’t see a need for help, possibly he or she doesn’t need help. Health research indicates that (older) adults generally stay healthier the longer they stay independent. Dependency on care can become convenient, and sometimes abused. Independence and self-care should be encouraged as long as it is safe to do so. It is common for (older) adults to deny that they need help or need a change. Recognizing the need for help can mean acknowledging health deterioration and loss of independence. Often pride and a resistance to the change in family roles can get in the way. However, note that close family members or friends can also sometimes be overly concerned and the (older) adult indeed may not need help. If your (older) adult denies needing help but you still think it is needed, it may be time to get another opinion.

The best way to do this is to cuss to determine issues and should include the (older) concerns expressed in the have another family member possible care. adult. Because they have meeting should be less of or friend of the adult become The first family meeting been previously approached, (Continued on pg. 16) involved. Ideally, an (older) adult will acknowledge when help is needed or request assistance. Also, in the ideal world, all family members will agree on how help will be provided. However, in the real world, there often can be conflict about whether help is needed and who is going to provide it. A family meeting is a good way to work things out, answer questions and make sure that everyone is on the same page. Also, the best way to get help from family members is to Involve them in the planning process from the start. Planning for the first family meeting may or may not include the (older) adult because he or she may feel confronted and invisible as others discuss care needs. During the initial planning process, family members should write a list of their concerns related to the (older) adult. (What was working before that isn’t working now?) The list below can be used as a guideline for topics to dis-

Helping an older adult (Continued from pg. 14) a surprise. The list of concerns developed when planning the meeting should be available to everyone so no concerns are missed. The following list can also help keep the focus on the concerns rather than wandering on to other topics. Topics for first family meeting: Bring up each of these areas of concern at the first family meeting, even if you don’t think they apply to your (older) adult’s situation. Some people at the meeting may be aware of certain concerns while others aren’t. If all or some exist, care is probably needed. Mental Health-More confusion, communication problems and unusual mood swings. Personal Mobility- Walks more slowly, avoids walking or climbing steps, or feels unstable in movement. Housing- Has frequent falls, is no longer able to perform basic living tasks on his/her own, is overwhelmed by house or property upkeep.
