MICAH celebrates 27 years of community outreach and leadership By Steve Waring Specail to the Milwaukee Times Milwaukee Innercity Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) honored two members for leadership during their "27th Anniversary Gala Dinner" held for more than 500 members and guests on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Italian Community Center. The Rev. Richard Shaw, pastor of St. Matthew CME Church, received the Distinguished Leadership Award for his initiative and organization of Safe Surrender, a campaign which has resolved thousands of outstanding warrants for non-violent offenses within the 53206 Milwaukee zip code. Eleanor Harris received the Volunteer of the Year Award for her passion and dedication to helping MICAH grow. She is passionately committed to ending mass incarceration and successfully organized and oversaw the first successful ‘Sustainer Drive’ for MICAH in 2014. Dennis Grzezinski and Karyn Rotker from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) shared the “To Do What is Just Award.” U.S. Cong resswoman Gwen Moore and the Rev. Willie E. Brisco, president of MICAH and pastor of New

Covenant Baptist Church, received special presentations in honor of the 50th anniversary of their participation in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Selma, AL. During welcoming remarks, Pastor Brisco focused on some of the recent accomplishments achieved by MICAH, especially its work to combat policies and procedures which lead to mass incarceration. He also singled out work that MICAH had contributed toward the installation of three new bus routes designed to enable inner city residents to commute to jobs which tend to be more plentiful in the western Milwaukee suburbs. The keynote speaker was Rev. Starsky Wilson, president and CEO of Deaconess Foundation, a faith-based grant-making organization dedicated to child wellbeing in the St. Louis area. Pastor Wilson praised MICAH “on the eve of Pentecost” for its ability to make itself heard above the background noise of politics. MICAH began in 1988, evolving out of the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee and Central City Catholic Churches as an organization “that might challenge the root causes of hunger and poverty in Milwaukee.”

Rebuilding Our Community

3

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Something has to give It seems that we have gone back in a time machine when things were just as confusing in the 1960’s as they are today. In the words of some it has gotten “crazy out here,” but this time it is with a new and younger generation feeling the pain. The old Jim Crow policies and practices of the last century and a half have re-emerged and been remixed to create new red lines in social justice, class and by race. And this new upcoming generation seems to be fed up with how things are going and willing to take their frustrations to the street and across social media. The laundry list of what is happening out here is reflective of the ongoing struggle for equal rights, equal pay,

equal justice, equal treatment, equal education, equal health care and equal opportunity. The short list includes a number of things that are “out of sight and out of mind,” including black on black crime, gangs, domestic violence, policing policies gone awry, shootings, abuse, white and blue collar crimes, political side stepping, exploding prison population, widespread drug use, high rates of poverty, endless world conflicts, limits on affordable health care, poor housing, and high unemployment. What is happening today is creating a new generation of community, family, and youth advocates that are entering the workforce with a new sense of urgency and

passion to see things beyond today and to work toward common goals with meaningful outcomes. For them this is a different world from what they have envisioned for themselves, their generation, neighbors and the world. However, what this generation is waking up to is the reality that what they are seeing and experiencing is something that is deeply rooted in the makeup of America and its big business.

In the eyes of this upcoming generation, this is an outcry. Not only is this generation inheriting a lot of national debt, but also a lot of social baggage that includes outdated political psychology and strategies. Believe me this is not a figment of your imagination, these are real issues, affecting real people, with real costs and “right now.” Let’s put it this way... It is going to take all that we have to turn things around, all hands on deck to do the right things and to find ways to level the playing field so that all of us can enjoy the best of what the American Dream was, is and can be. It is my hope that this new generation also takes it to the polls and votes when the time comes. What

do you think? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, and Facebook. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. A graduation editorial by state superintendent Tony Evers About 60,000 students sin public high schools in graduates, their families, and ebrate. High school graduawill graduate from Wiscon- the coming weeks. Those friends have much to cel- tion is a milestone, a transition in life. Most of our 2015 graduates are or will soon be 18-years-of-age, the mark of adulthood in the United States and many other countries. But as those of us who have reached and surpassed the age of majority, leaving high school and being an adult doesn’t mean the end of education. Successful people will tell you, they never stop learning. And, if the class of 2015 is like those before it, about 60 percent of our graduates will continue their education at a two- or four-year college or university in the fall. Others will pursue postsecondary studies later. With a world economy that demands some education beyond high school for most family-supporting jobs, our graduates’ level of continuing education is good news. Whether headed toward postsecondary studies, an apprenticeship or training program, military service, or the workforce, I hope our 2015 graduates keep learning throughout life. America’s strength comes from its diversity. While few of us can travel to exotic places, exploring our diverse planet spans a wide range of experiences with many options for broadening cultural connections. Through the public library, the Internet, community gatherings, and other events, the world

Tony Evers State Superintendent might just be around the corner. When you interact with someone whose background and upbringing is different than your own, it opens new ways of thinking and adds to the richness of life. I urge our graduates to keep exploring your community, state, country, and beyond. What would our communities be without those who volunteer? I can tell you, they wouldn’t be much. From coaching athletics to collecting for a food bank, from cleaning up parks and roadways to participating in civic and social organizations, it’s the time we give that makes a community thrive. And, our capacity to show compassion and understanding to others is strengthened through service. Graduates, I encourage you to find a cause you believe in to help a neighbor or improve your community. It’s worth it. Congratulations 2015 high school graduates. Never stop learning, exploring, and serving. The world needs your strength and energy to move forward. Best wishes for your life ahead.

National Foster Care Month (part 2, conclusion) May is National Foster Care Month. During National Foster Care Month, you are encouraged to seek out ways to support children in foster care and assist those who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of these vulnerable children in need, including child welfare professionals, foster families, and mentors. Not every individual or family is in a position to foster a child in need, but everyone can play a role. To all who have given their time, love, and commitment to the children in foster care and their families, we thank you! This week the concentration will be on the educational and training vouchers that are available for current and former foster care youth. The John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Program helps current and former foster care youth through the Educational and Training Vouchers (“ETV”) Program. These vouchers are grants, funded by the United States

federal government and administered by the states and awarded to eligible current and former foster youth to help defray the costs of college, career school or training. Persons who are eligible are: 1. Youth who are likely to remain in foster care until age 18; 2. Youth who were adopted or under kinship guardianship at age 16 or older, and 3. Young adults ages

18-21 who have aged out of the foster care system. Students who are eligible to receive funding under the Educational and Training Voucher Program can get up to $5,000.00 per academic year based on cost of attendance and available funds. If you are interested in more information regarding this program, please visit: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/ prog rams/cb/resource/ chafee-foster-care-program A frequently asked question is whether there is any other help available for current or former foster care youth besides these education and training vouchers. For general information, help, and resources for foster care youth, visit the U.S. Department of Health and

UWM graduate looks to earn doctorate and help improve urban living with architecture When she was eight, Milan Outlaw wanted to be an architect and build her mom a fancier house. “We had a nice house. I just wanted to build her one of those fancy Builder Showcase ones she was always looking at.” Now Outlaw is going to graduate school for a master’s degree in architecture and has set her sights even higher – to earn a doctorate and use her talents to build a better Milwaukee. Outlaw, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 17, will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall. Her focus will be urbanism – using architecture to work with residents in cities and neighborhoods to improve the spaces and environments around them. “As I progressed in my studies at UWM, I wanted to use architecture as a means to empower marginalized individuals,” she says. An example would be turning vacant lots into pocket parks – places in which

Milan Outlaw people can gather and get to know each other. “Architects and designers are the ones who create the ways people interact within spaces. Once you work alongside communities using architecture as a means of empowerment, just through that one act, so many people are impacted.” Outlaw grew up in Milwaukee, first at 38th and Capitol and then in the Harambee neighborhood. At UWM, she worked with Arijit Sen, associate professor of archi-

tecture, to create design proposals in Washington Park, giving her experience in empowering residents to use what they have to make their communities better. “A lot of times architects go into neighborhoods and say ‘this is what I’m going to do because that’s what the developer told me',” Outlaw says. A better approach is to look at what exists in a neighborhood and ask residents about what they want, as well as how they interact within

spaces. Outlaw chose UWM because it has the only architecture school in Wisconsin, and she wanted to stay close to home. Her older sister, Epiphany, and her brother, JZ, graduated from UWM, and her younger sister, Yasmine, is a student. UWM expanded her horizons. She studied in France and was in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate program, which encouraged her to do research and presentations. “It helped me see the importance of minority students, faculty and staff within higher education.” Her mother, who grew up in Watts in Los Angeles, and raised seven children, has been a major influence in her life, says Outlaw. “If it wasn’t for my mom, I don’t think I would have gone to college. Knowledge is one of the many gifts she has given me. She wanted us to have the life she didn’t have.” Carolyn Outlaw also taught her daughter about feminism, and introduced her to

authors such as Angela Davis. Outlaw minored in women’s studies. Carolyn Outlaw had her first child at 17, and didn’t have a college education, but she continues to set an example for her children. She is attending MATC, studying early childhood education and development.

Where you’re treated for heart attack matters

Study finds survival difference of about one year between high- and low-performing hospitals Heart attack patients live longer if they’re treated at high-performing hospitals -- those with lower 30-day death rates, a new study indicates. Hospitals are often rated based on the percentage of heart attack patients who die within 30 days of admission, the researchers noted. Hospitals with high 30-day death rates are considered low-performing, explained the researchers led by Dr. Emily Bucholz, of Yale Uni- versity’s Schools of Medicine

and Public Health, in New Haven, CT. For this study, she and her colleagues looked at data on nearly 12,000 Medicare patients admitted to more than 1,800 hospitals across the United States for treatment of a heart attack. Patients treated at hospitals in the highest tenth of performance lived an average of about six years after their heart attack, compared with about five years for

those treated at hospitals in the lowest tenth of performance, they found. The study was published April 29 in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. The findings, based on 17 years of follow-up, show that the initial benefits of being treated in a high-performing hospital last much longer than the first 30 days, the researchers said.

Switch from U.S. to African diet may lower colon cancer risk in blacks When a group of black Americans switched their diet from a typical American one to that of South Africans, certain risk factors for colon cancer began to fade away, a small study found. The change was rapid, the researchers noted, suggesting the power of diet to alter colon cancer risk. “Our study suggests that Westernization of the diet induces changes in [signals] of colon cancer risk within two weeks,” study co-author Stephen O’Keefe, of the University of Pittsburgh, said in a news release from the Imperial College London. Conversely, switching from the high-protein, low-fiber Western diet to a traditional African high-fiber, low-fat diet reduced certain risk factors for colon cancer in the gut. This indicates “that it is likely never too late to change your diet to change your risk of colon cancer,” O’Keefe said. According to the researchers, prior studies have suggested that dietary change can quickly alter colon cancer risk. “Studies on Japanese migrants to Hawaii have shown that it takes one generation of Westernization to change their low incidence of colon cancer to the high rates observed in native Hawaiians,” O’Keefe said. The new study involved a group of 20 black Ameri-

can volunteers and 20 more participants from rural South Africa. Under close supervision, the participants swapped diets for two weeks. Before the switch, however, all of the participants underwent colonoscopies. A second procedure was performed at the end of the study period. The researchers also assessed certain risk factors for colon cancer, including biological markers for the disease. And they examined bacteria samples taken from the participants’ colons. When the study began, nearly 50 percent of those in the American group had polyps, or abnormal growths, in the lining of their colon. Although these growths are not harmful, they could eventually lead to cancer, O’Keefe’s team noted. In contrast, none of the volunteers from South Africa had polyps upon entry to the study. After two weeks of eating the African diet, the American volunteers showed dramatic reductions in colon inflammation, the researchers said. They also showed declines in certain other signals tied to colon cancer risk. On the other hand, colon cancer risk factors rose significantly among the Africans who made the switch to a high-fat, high-protein, lowfiber American-style diet, the team said.

Save the Date!

“We can’t definitively tell from these measurements that the change in their diet would have led to more cancer in the African group or less in the American group, but there is good evidence from other studies that the changes we observed are signs of cancer risk,” study co-author Jeremy Nicholson of Imperial College London said in the news release. The good news, he said, is that “people can substantially lower their risk of colon cancer by eating more fiber. This is not new in itself but what is really surprising is how quickly and dramatically the risk markers can switch in both groups following diet change.

One possible explanation for the effects of diet on colon cancer risk is the way bacteria in the gut respond or adapt to the change, the researchers explained. For those in the American group, switching to a high-fiber diet led to increase in the production of butyrate, a byproduct of fiber metabolism that can help prevent cancer. “The gut microbiome is being increasingly recognized as an important contributor to human health,” added Dr. James Kinross, a colorectal surgeon and a member of the research group at Imperial. "This research shows that gut bacteria are critically important for mediating the link between diet and colon

cancer risk. This means we can look to develop therapies targeting gut bacteria as a way to prevent and treat cancer." According to the study authors, colon cancer is the fourth leading cause of death from cancer around the world, claiming more than 600,000 lives each year. Rates of colon cancer are much higher in the United States and other western nations than in Africa or the Far East. The study was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the National Institute for Health Research Imperial Biomedical Research Centre in the United Kingdom.

Should a dream wedding mean delaying a down payment on a home? That's a tradeoff many couples make these days. The Knot, a wedding planning and publishing company, recently released its Real Weddings Study (http:// w w w. x o g r o u p i n c . c o m / press-releases-home/2015press-releases/2015-03-12the-knot-2014-real-weddings-study.aspx) of average wedding costs for 2014, announcing a national average price tag of $31,213 (not including the honeymoon). The average cost of a wedding is a good point of comparison against other major financial goals in a new marriage. Considering that the average price of a new home in America is now $200,000, that wedding estimate would cover the majority of a 20 percent down payment ($40,000). Despite getting married to my wife at family home 15 years ago, I still remember the sticker shock for all the wedding costs – a whopping $10,000 for the entire event from tux,

Planning a wedding on a budget

dress, flowers, food and honeymoon. Here are a few suggestions to plan a wedding that won't break the bank: • Marry off-season. The most popular wedding months are now June and October, with longtime leader June losing a bit of ground. The most popular day to get married is Saturday and nighttime is the most competitive time slot for receptions. Consider a January wedding when the post-holiday rush is over – cold weather wedding venues are generally empty and priced to move. Weekday weddings have the potential

added bonus of guests drinking less on a work night and weekend brunch weddings can be served buffet-style with more reasonably priced menu choices. • Find alternative venues. Farms, barns, warehouses, art galleries and of course, family property can be cheaper venues for a wedding, but make sure such spaces are properly insured for alcohol, food or other party-related risks. Also, in many communities, party venues must be properly licensed and/or zoned to avoid fines or legal action. • DIY if possible. Couples with a flair for party plan-

ning, decorating and cooking might be able to slash costs planning and executing their own event with minimal dependence on hired or volunteer help. From flowers to photography, wedding cake to wedding planners, check for affordable options. If a venue allows couples to supply their own flowers and decorations, it is wise to comparison shop. Consider professional photographers or skilled amateurs who meet your tastes and budget. • Use a gift registry to pay for the wedding. Couples can set up online gift registries that allow guests to directly fund honeymoon

trips or specific expenses associated with the wedding. • Plan a destination wedding. Resorts around the world and well-known domestic wedding/travel destinations like Las Vegas or Hawaii offer wedding packages that blend a ceremony and vacation getaway. Planning a winter wedding? Research options for a warmer climate or snowy destination at a ski resort. • Finally, be flexible. Some venues have cancellations and if a couple is willing to put themselves on a waiting list and move quickly if they get the call, savings might be possible. Before planning a wedding, it's wise to start with planning finances. A meeting with a qualified financial advisor might help put wedding costs in perspective with other major financial priorities. Bottom line: Dream weddings don't have to put a couple's financial life on hold. Consider real financial priorities first and build a smart wedding budget from there.

Call the Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLE-5 (1-800-426-2535) or visit wi-problemgamblers.org. ®
