Maskani Place opens in Harambee neighborhood Homeless families get a fresh start in empowering and green environment

Heartland Housing proudly announced the grand opening of Maskani Place, a 37-unit, $10 million housing community for Milwaukee families that were previously living in shelters, homeless or at risk of homelessness. “Maskani Place provides high-quality, affordable, permanent housing for families affected by poverty that previously had to search monthly, weekly, or even daily for a place to sleep,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director of Heartland Housing, a division of Heartland Alliance. “With the security of living at Maskani, residents can focus on employment, education, personal wellness or whatever they need to improve their lives and the lives of their children.” Because all units are subsidized, rent will be no more than 30 percent of a resident’s income. Of the country’s largest cit-

ies, Milwaukee has the fourth highest child poverty rate in the country, with 43 percent of children living below 100 percent of the federal poverty line. In addition to high-quality, safe, affordable housing, service partner Community Advocates will provide assistance with employment training and job searches, finding childcare, and developing financial literacy. The building includes a computer lab and a multipurpose community room. Maskani Place was designed and constructed with sustain-

ability and energy efficiency in mind. All units have Energy Star® appliances; low VOC paints, adhesives and sealants; low-flow plumbing; and energy efficient lighting, ceiling fans and windows, in addition to energy efficient heating and cooling systems. “Maskani” is a Swahili word for “home.” Maskani Place is located at 320 East Center Street in Milwaukee’s near north side. Families that are interested in living at Maskani Place should contact Heartland Housing at 414-2084855.

Stepping toward a brighter future

Sixty-seven adult men and women took a big step on the road to their dreams. They graduated from the GED/ HSED program at the Social Development Commission (SDC) Thursday, May 22, 2014. The students completed five months of coursework and testing at the agency to earn their high school diplomas. During that time, they overcame many obstacles and challenges on the way as was recognized by speakers at the ceremony. Kalan Haywood, founder and president of the Vangard Group, presented the keynote address. He told the graduates they were the authors of their own future after relating the challenges he had faced while becoming a local real estate develop-

ment leader. SDC CEO George Hinton also told the students that their new life was just beginning. Noting that he also is a GED graduate who went on to lead SDC as well as Aurora Sinai Samaritan, Hinton reminded them that they are now role models for others who are also looking to turn their lives around. One such inspiring graduate is Priscilla Hazelwood. The Milwaukee woman dropped out of high school to raise her family and watched as first her children and then her grandchildren walked across the graduation stage. She decided that “today is my time” so she entered and successfully completed the GED/HSED program.

Emma Mattin is another graduate in the SDC class. She addressed her fellow students during the graduation ceremony, telling them “you did the thing!” She recalled how they stuck together during the classwork and helped each other stick to their goals despite hard times and struggles. She also reminded them that “we will all go on to greater and better things after today.” The GED/HED program at SDC graduates two classes annually. Online registration for the next session will begin on June 2 and can be done by going to the SDC website at www.cr-sdc.org/ index/Programs--Services/ Education--Training/BasicSkills.htm.

Statement from NAACP Milwaukee Branch president James Hall on violence and murders in Milwaukee The NAACP Milwaukee Branch reiterates our prior statement and joins the chorus being echoed to end the violence that’s occurring in our community on a regular basis. We abhor the murders and violence that continues to plague our community and the recent shooting of 10-year-old Sierra Guyton, which highlights the insanity of it all. This criminal conduct is unacceptable. And it shouldn’t be condoned or tolerated. We must work with law enforcement and community stakeholders to contain and reduce crime, which we can do as individuals and collectively as a community and be responsible and accountable to each other. At the same time, we must not lose sight of the root causes for much of the violence: poverty, high unemployment, disparities in income and opportunity affecting Milwaukee’s African American community, which are the highest in the nation. The fact is that few African Americans or others, with jobs and opportunities, commit murder or other violent crimes. However, it is not enough to express outrage about the violence. We must also be outraged by the circumstances that contribute to the situation. We must take actions and implement policies that address these conditions. The mission of the NAACP is to promote equality for all people. We feel strongly that working to increase public safety is consistent with that mission. We also know that the way to re-

"Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Atty. James H. Hall solve it is not only by calling for a stop to the violence, but also by taking specific, meaningful and targeted steps to eradicate its root causes. - James H. Hall, Jr., President Milwaukee Branch NAACP

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Celebrating the continuum of motherhood (conclusion) us very much. He knew we would need someone to listen to our cares, to comfort and remember us in loving thoughts and prayers. So in His boundless wisdom, He sent us from above…the dearest blessing in the world. A Mother’s Precious Love, in the form of Ruthie Burtin Woods. We love you mom! - The Woods Children: C.J., Ann, Joseph, Zelma, Ted, Carmencita, Brenda, Sandy, Jr., and Peter

Mothers are a gift from God and a child’s first impression of God’s love. Mothers are cleaning ladies. Some mothers are gardeners, mowers of lawns and most mothers understand that baking cookies is more important than washing windows, too. Mothers are nurses, doctors, psychologists, counselors and chauffeurs and coaches. Mothers are developers of personalities, molders of vocabularies and shapers of attitudes. Mothers are soft voices saying, “I love you.” Mothers are all of these things and much, much more. This year a few of our readers shared with us why they believe their mother is so special. In our conclusion, I hope you enjoy the tributes submitted by the Woods family and M.J. Pacheco.

As a family we believe in honoring our mother on a regular basis to remind her that she is loved and appreciated. Last year’s celebration was held on July 13, 2013 for our mother’s 90th birthday. There are 9 of us still living, having lost two of our siblings, Arthur Woods, Sr. and Rhoda Woods Dubose who are now with the Lord. Our father passed away in April 1996. Through it all, Tribute to Our Mother: Ruthie our mother has been strong. Burtin Woods Our mother’s 90th birthBy: Ann Watkins on behalf of day celebration was held in the Woods Children Cleveland, Mississippi. The

celebration of love honored our mother, Ruthie Burtin Woods, as a woman of courage, love and unwavering devotion. She is truly an inspiration to us all. We humbly pray that our lives and the lives of our children reflect the examples that our mother has provided for us. We pray that she will always know that we love her and we cherish every day that God blesses us to have her in our lives. God knew there would be times we would need a gentle touch, a tender, understanding heart, to love

Tribute to My Mother: Mary Jane Pacheco By: M.J. Pacheco My mother has taught me everything I know about being a woman of strength, dignity, and compassion. I honor her by doing all I can to succeed; I don't want the sacrifices she has made for me to be in vain. She inspires me every day. Beloved, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia. She then began a

campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Jarvis' holiday has since been adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. People across the globe share their sentiments and express profound love for their mothers on Mother’s Day. We pray that you will remember to celebrate the continuum of motherhood not just on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. Honor those who have loved and even labored so that their children may have a better life. What’s Happening?

FELLAS making history: Man Up 5K wellness walk for men It’s the first event of its kind for men [ever] here in Milwaukee. This annual MAN UP 5K Wellness Walk will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 along the beautiful Riverwalk in downtown Milwaukee. In Milwaukee there are pronounced disparities in health by race, ethnicity, class, and gender for a wide range of outcomes, and research suggests that young males of color are particularly at risk. A full understanding of health by race and gender requires attention to the social conditions in which health is embedded. This historic Man Up Wellness Walk begins the critical process of addressing the disparities experienced by men of color. It is imperative that we in this community recognize and address the needs and issues of this long-overlooked population. Our goal is 1000 men participating in this historic health event for men. These men will receive health screenings, fitness tips, dental hygiene information, healthcare insurance options and valuable general health information they need to improve their overall health status. Just not down for that halfhour jog? No problem. Take a walk instead. A surprising new study shows that brisk walking has the same hearthealth benefits as running – as long as you hoof it twice as long. Researchers found that the same energy used for high-intensity running and moderate-intensity walking yielded similar decreases in high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease risks. One of my goals as publisher of FELLAS, a Men’s Guide to Healthy Living, is to continue the effort to eliminate health disparities in Milwaukee. These disparities in health care and health outcomes exist across race, gender, and income level. Among the most overlooked populations who experience the poorest health outcomes and face the biggest barriers to care are men of color. You can register individually or your team at www. fellashealth.com. Exhibitors are encouraged to join this historic event by purchasing your booth space in one of our four promotional tents. This wellness walk will provide great exposure for our partners and sponsors. In addition to on site presence at the walk, our sponsors have the opportunity to participate in walk Initiative events and cross promotions. Please contact Matthew Johnson for sponsorship opportunities. Our sponsors include:

American Heart Association, McDonalds, City of Milwaukee, City of Milwaukee Health Department, Community Advocates-Black Male Initiative, Abbott, Social Development Commission, YMCA, Hayat Pharmacy, Universal Schools, Pulmedix Asthma Center, Blood Center, Molina Health, State Farm Insurance-Leonard Cratic, Schlitz Park and our media partners WISN-12ABC and The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper.

Update on transformation at Bay View Middle and High School featured during Bay View Gallery Night Students, staff and community members will present an update on the process of transforming Bay View Middle and High School during a special presentation at the school at 5:30 p.m. on June 6. The event will take place during Bay View Gallery Night activities. “I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for their on-going commitment to the new Bay View High School,” said Aaron Shapiro, principal of Bay View. “Our attendance is up. Suspensions are down dramatically. Most importantly, students and staff have demonstrated a commitment to focus on the new Bay View and what’s working.” The plan to transform Bay View High School was approved last year by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors based on extensive community, student and staff input received through the Believe in Bay View process. The school has a focus on creativity and innovation, building upon strong science/technology/engineering/arts/math (STEAM) programming. New efforts

include project-based learning that relies and builds upon student knowledge across multiple subject areas. The plan also phases out the middle school. In addition to the curriculum redesign, students and staff were asked to recommit to the school and participate in restorative justice Students involved in boat practices. Talking Health with Dr. Carter

11

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Radiation vs. Nutrition (part 2) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Because of selective uptake, we need to keep our bodies replete with essential minerals. Radioactive elements behave in the body as do healthy minerals. If the body is lacking a mineral, the radioactive equivalent is absorbed. For example, the body uptakes cesium-137 for potassium; strontium-90 for the minerals calcium and strontium; iodine with iodine-131, etc. Because iodine deficiency is endemic in the US, we are particularly at risk for uptaking radioactive iodine, setting the stage for future throat and thyroid cancers. The half life of iodine-131 is only 8.5 days, but the effects are cumulative. Iodine-131 can be cleared with nutrient iodine. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that 5 mg of iodine given over several days displaces about 80 percent of radioactive iodine. Radioprotective foods Humans eat at the top of the food chain. Most of us eat meat, eggs, and dairy foods. When we do, we eat any toxins or pollutants that

the animal ate. These are condensed into the resulting foods. For instance, when radioactive rain falls across the US, it soaks into the soil and splashes into lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Plants grow and absorb radioactive particles through their leaves and roots. Animals eat the plants, concentrating the toxins, and we eat the animals. Perhaps it’s time to take out the middleman(imal). First, do your best to eat at the bottom of the food chain. Living on plant foods (veganism) is the safest way to eat. Plants meet all the protective criteria mentioned above: 1) super nutritious; 2) high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory: 3) slightly alkaline state; 4) contain all the minerals we need. 5) help keep our cells oxygenated. Shannon lists the following food groups as radioprotective. Although these plants may be exposed to radiation and other toxins, fallout pollutants are not as highly concentrated in plants as they are animal products. 1. Whole grains have high fiber and high phytate contents both of which chelate with toxins and help remove them from the body. (Phytates and phytic acid are antioxidant compounds found in whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.) Grains have a healthy acid-alkaline balance; plus, they provide vitamin B6, essential for thymus function.

(a specialized organ of the immune system.) They also contain iron, zinc, calcium, and trace minerals. 2. Vegetables and fruits are rich in nutrients, antioxidants, are anti-inflammatory, have fiber, and are generally alkaline. Their freshly squeezed juice is a tasty, mineral-rich water which is optimal for hydrating and regenerating. Sulfur-containing vegetables are especially recommended. They are the cruciferous or cabbage family (cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, arugula) and the onion family (onions, shallots, chives, scallions, leeks, garlic). Chard and the surprisingly popular kale are also sulfur carriers. The sulfur in these veggies is needed for the amino acids cysteine and methionine. These amino acids function in the body’s all important antioxidant enzyme system. They also chelate radioactive substances and heavy metal toxins, clearing them from the body.

3. Beans are rich in protein, especially soybeans. Beans contain a number of cancer-inhibiting and radioprotective substances, including fiber and phytates. The amino acids they contain complement the amino acids in grains, providing complete protein. Tofu and tempeh are complete protein foods made from soybeans. Most people know tofu (soy curd). Tempeh is a fermented soy product that brings 15 grams of complete protein per ½ cup and the extra protection of microbes (probiotics). 4. Miso is a superfood. It is an alkaline paste made of fermented soybeans and sea salt. Listed separately because of its many radioprotective qualities, miso is one of the few vegetable sources of vitamin B12 (cobalamin). This cobalt based vitamin protects against the uptake of cobalt-60. In addition, miso contains a rare chelator called zybicolin. Microbes and live enzymes are also found in this superfood. Apsley notes that fermented foods neutralize radiation and support the immune system. 5. Seeds and nuts are high in protein, minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), and essential fatty acids, which implement oxygen transport. Seeds and nuts also contain fiber and phytates. Shannon says, “You’d be

nutty not to include them in your diet.” 6. Sea vegetables are different kinds of edible seaweed, such as dulse, kelp, and nori. Sea vegetables are the most highly recommended radioprotective foods. The sea is much richer in minerals than soil. Sea vegetables are particularly high in iodine. They also contain calcium alginate, a powerful chelating agent. Here is the downside: China, Japan, Korea, and the West Coast of the US produce massive amounts of sea vegetables and also are the hardest hit by leakage from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Under the circumstances, it seems wise to purchase North Atlantic sea vegetables. Before we proceed to discussing radioprotective supplements, here are Apsley’s animal product compensators. Mix in per cup of dairy or per egg: 1/4 tsp bentonite (tasteless) or 100 mg calcium alginate or 100 mg pectin. Reprinted With Permission Copyright © Nutrition News 2014 Home of the "Is It Healthy?" CDC: Water poses more danger for black youths than whites Evidence suggests they are less likely to have been taught basic swimming skills, researcher notes

Black children are more than five times as likely to drown in swimming pools as their white peers, U.S. health officials reported Thursday, May 22, 2014. “There are striking disparities,” said lead researcher Dr. Julie Gilchrist, a medical epidemiologist in the division of unintentional injury prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gilchrist thinks these disparities result from many minorities not having been taught basic swimming skills. “A teenager who drowns in a backyard swimming pool that is only 6- or 7-feet deep -- that’s just lack of basic swimming skill,” she said. “There is evidence that suggests that African Americans lack basic swimming skills at greater numbers than their white or Hispanic counterparts,” Gilchrist added. Access to swimming pools is one problem. “But it’s also

a cultural choice as to how you spend your recreational time and dollars. I think parents perceive swimming as just another recreational activity, and they may choose soccer or baseball or basketball instead,” she said. Many parents don’t see swimming as a necessary lifesaving skill, Gilchrist said. “Actually, learning basic swim skills, such as being able to right yourself in the water, control your breathing, float and swim 25 yards is lifesaving,” she noted. Gilchrist doesn’t think learning swimming strokes is as important as learning survival skills. “As far as reducing these disparities, swim skills would go a long way,” she suggested.

Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death in children, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In 2006, about 1,100 U.S. children younger than 20 died from drowning. According to the AAP, one study found that swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent. Parents can find basic swimming programs at local YMCAs and through the Red Cross, Gilchrist said. The CDC and the AAP support giving kids swim lessons.

These lessons can start as early as the age of 1, Gilchrist said. “Swimming is a lifesaving skill -it’s a necessity, it’s not a recreation,” Gilchrist noted. In addition to swim skills, she said, lifeguards, life jackets, fences and bystander CPR are all important in preventing drowning. The report was published May 16 in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. According to the report, the risk of drowning among minorities, including American Indians/Alaska Natives and blacks up to age 29, is far greater than among whites. An analysis of 12 years of data showed that the drowning rate for American Indians/Alaska Natives is twice the rate for whites, and the drowning rate for blacks is

1.4 times the rate for whites. The greatest disparity is in swimming pool drowning, with black children aged 5 to 19 facing a 5.5 times higher rate than white children, the study found. The Red Cross recommends: • Swim in areas supervised by lifeguards. • Swim with a buddy. • Make sure everyone in the family learns to swim well. • Enroll in Red Cross water orientation and learn-toswim courses. • Never leave a child near water unattended. • Do not trust a child’s life to another child. • Teach children to always ask permission to go near water. • Young children or inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
