After 12 years, community still remembers Alexis Patterson

When a precious seven-year-old girl named Alexis Patterson disappeared after being dropped off at school 12 years ago, it signalled the beginning of a mystery and a cause for many Milwaukeeans who were touched by a family's sudden tragedy. Alexis, a gap-toothed beauty who attended Hi-Mount Community School, was last seen May 3, 2002 after her stepfather LaRon Bougeois told authorities he walked the child to school and left after watching her cross the street. When Alexis failed to come home and was reported missing by school officials, it set off a city-wide search by police, Milwaukee County Sheriff deputies and private citizens drawn by media coverage of the missing child. On May 3, 2014 Sheriff David A. Clarke, Jr. (right), and Rev. John W. McVicker, Sr. (left), pastor of the Christ the King Baptist Church and also a chaplain for the Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Office, along with members of the sheriff ’s command staff, attended an observance of the 12th year anniversary of the disappearance of Alexis Patterson. This was held at the location where she was last reportedly seen near Hi-Mount Boulevard Community School.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (photo on left) is pictured addressing 150 clergymen at the Cease Fire Sabbath Clergy Breakfast held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on April 22, 2014; during his remarks, the Mayor asked the clergy for their help in combatting crime in the city. Pastor Mose Fuller (pictured right) of St. Timothy Baptist Church said he was speaking on behalf of pastors who are already involved in helping to abate crime in Milwaukee. However, he said he wanted to say something to encourage more of the clergy to become involved. Rev. Fuller said: “The

bloodshed on the streets of Milwaukee undermines everything a sane society stands for … which demands every pastor in the city to come together in a common foxhole strategy to clean up the causes of bloodshed in this community.” The mayor announced that he was seeking 3000 jobs from local businesses. Rev. Fuller countered, saying, “I think we should ask for 10,000 jobs!” After that comment, some of the clergy gave Pastor Fuller a standing ovation.

Mayor Barrett seeks faith leaders’ help solving crime in the community By Don Edward Pannell Special to the Milwaukee Times Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett exhibited a somber mood during his citywide anti-violence initiative Ceasefire Sabbath Clergy Breakfast at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 3022 W. Wisconsin Ave., on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Being the bearer of bad news, what other mood could mayor be in? During the breakfast, the mayor solicited the help of 150 clergymen of all denominations and races who came to hear him and Police Chief Ed Flynn discuss the Ceasefire Week agenda and to “continue the partnership in violent crime reduction and prevention” in the City of Milwaukee.

Noting the significant number of clergymen present, the mayor said he felt their being there was like having the “cavalry arrive.” And the mayor added: “We need help. I need help. I believe you are here to help this city.” Mayor Barrett also expressed his love for Milwaukee and how much he enjoys being mayor. Then he shared what he considered to be one of the toughest parts of his job being mayor: "When I get contacted and told that there has been a loss of life in our city. When that call comes in, and I’m sorry to say this, but what’s going through my mind is this: Is this going to be a young African American male? And I’m sorry to say,

I’m usually right. And that’s one big part of the challenge we have in the community. What can we do to reduce the violence in the African American community?” The mayor acknowledged crime was being committed in the Hispanic and white communities, but disproportionately, young black males are overwhelmingly “the victims of violence.” He reminded the clergymen of a double-homicide, which occurred the night before saying, “We had a double homicide last night of two African American men in their thirties,” adding “that is a little older than the usual, but this has to stop!” Mayor Barrett then shared news that the city would be hiring 120 new police of-

ficers. That announcement evoked applause as a sign of approval. But he quickly added: “I know we cannot have police officers everywhere and I’m not naïve to believe that the people getting in trouble are sitting in your pews on Sunday morning,” and then acknowledged the persons committing crime may very well “have a mother, a grandmother, an aunt or someone who loves them there. That is where I believe you can help because we are in this together!” During the breakfast, the mayor introduced Marty Forman, owner of Midwest Recycling who offered to assist in a gun buy-back program being launched by African American clergymen. Tracey Dent for 16th State Assembly District

Grassroots organizer and community activist vows to 'impact the community one life at a time' On April 15, 2014 Milwaukee grassroots organizer and community activist Tracey Dent announced his candidacy for the 16th State Assembly District seat. "I believe the district, for some years now, has not received the representation and leadership the constituents deserve," Dent said. "I know I can provide those elements to our community. We will turn our backs on no one. And, opening our arms to all, I will positively impact the 16th District community one life at a time." The energy that flows from Tracey Dent is gentle and filled with quiet passion and warmth. Tracey refers to himself as an ordinary person who wants to make an extraordinary difference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tracey has strong ties to this city; he was born and raised in Milwaukee, graduated from North Division High School and is pursuing a degree in accounting at Liberty University. Tracey also attends Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ. As CEO of Peace for Change Alliance (PCA) and Voices Against Violence Coalition, Tracey is making a path to introduce initiatives that will promote better education, wellness, and

peace within Milwaukee communities. Through PCA and Voices Against Violence Coalition, he has worked with youth to curb violence and positively express themselves, created programs that actively work to reduce neighborhood issues such as education and crime, and has addressed problems right where they occur in the streets. Tracey's track record consists of being a legislative assistant to former State Representative Elizabeth M. Coggs; Chair of the 50th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King I had a Dream Speech and March; the Annual Community Job and Resource Fair with the focus on helping felons find employment; and vigils addressing a variety of causes and issues. Tracey has received citations for making a difference in the greater Milwaukee community from the state assembly and senate. Over the years, Tracey has been recognized for numerous accomplishments, including his most recent nomination for a community service award by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Alliance of Black School Educators; as well as receiving The Milwaukee Times 2014 Black Excellence Award. In 2012 and 2013 Tracey was award-

Tracey Dent ed the Community Service award from the Grover Heights-Williamsburg Triangle Neighborhood Association. Tracey was also named Champion Achiever by the YMCA Black Achievers in 2003. Despite all of those accolades, Tracey insists his most valuable accomplishments are his daughter, Azaria, and marrying his beautiful wife Tamika. "You know, the order of priorities in one's life should be God, family, and then everything else," Tracy said. "I believe my constituents would not appreciate me changing that order. I'm one of them, a hard-working man from the community. I don't think they would look favorably on me abandoning the set of values they live by.

And that would mean facing challenges head on, fighting to reverse inequalities and to improve the quality of life for everyone." Tracey is a member of the NAACP, Advisory Council for The Blood Center of Wisconsin, and of the Dominican Center for Women. In addition to his role as CEO for PCA, Tracey is also a former vice president of 100 Black Men of Greater Milwaukee; and he is the founder of the Milwaukee Walk Toward Wellness, and the Getting it Together for a Brighter Future College Fair. Tracey is also a 2013 Graduate of Wisconsin Political Leaders Fellowship. This year Tracey has also influenced legislation for the City of Milwaukee (Bicycle Safety

Awareness Week for City of Milwaukee), and for the State of Wisconsin (Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Week). Tracey Dent is a leader. He is a community activist at heart, and enjoys working "on the front lines;" during 2011-2012 the tumultuous state legislative session made him want to serve the community as an elected official. Tracey feels it is time to take the steps needed to bring peace, jobs with living wages, safety, education, and resources that will benefit all and create communities that bring back the pride Milwaukee once enjoyed. Tracey will continue building relationships to get things done. He wants to establish districtwide business, neighborhood and youth associations. Tracey has experience in Milwaukee creating relationships with Democrats and Republicans, and he is respected in the community. Tracey Dent is already impacting lives. "Lets' stand together and continue to move forward," Tracey says. "If we stand tall, communicate with each other and then work together, we can accomplish tremendous things for our community, and for our state."

Being Frank

By Frank James IV

Did Donald Sterling lie? The NBA has banned Los Angeles Clipper owner Donald Sterling from the league for life. Sterling made comments about minorities he now wishes he hadn’t. Sterling was recorded talking to V. Stiviano when he made the remarks that led to the ban. The public outrage has been fierce and very anti- Sterling. But does what Sterling says to his confidante really matter? Better yet, did Sterling lie? Sterling is a wealthy man who owns an NBA team. Sterling had a young female confidante Stiviano. Sterling had a verbal interaction with Stiviano where he made some statements about minorities. Sterling did not know that he was being recorded for the world to hear. Sterling’s statements were not some of his better pronouncements, but in his defense he thought they were made in private. What does anything Sterling says or thinks have to do with you? America is very quick to condemn people for thinking contrary to the so-called norm. Americans are quick to greedily jump on a moral high horse whenever the media breaks a story dealing with the rich and famous. For the past few weeks the Sterling controversy has been the talk of America. But does Sterling’s view on minorities at the game affect someone in Milwaukee? Unless the Milwaukee native is planning on playing or going to a Clipper home game why should they care? While the talk around the water cooler focused on Sterling’s private rant, another black male was killed by the police. Dontre Hamilton was killed by a police officer in a park. Of course a rally

was held to seek answers for the shooting of Hamilton. Can you see that Milwaukee people have their own fish to fry and don’t have time to worry about what was said between a billionaire and his playmate? With the murder tally in Milwaukee jumping like Michael Jordan in the 1988 Dunk Contest, are Sterling’s remarks a concern? With the hot days of summer just around the corner does anyone in Milwaukee really have time to worry about a private conversation among Californians? Many are crying racism, really? Welcome to the United States of America. The next question is, did Sterling lie? Was Sterling lying when he said he basically took care of minorities? Sterling is an owner of an NBA team. He owns the team and those who play for it. If Sterling pays Chris Paul millions to dribble a ball and Paul uses it to buy a house, didn’t Sterling have a hand in the purchase? If Sterling gives Blake Griffin a bonus and he buys a Lamborghini with the money where did the money, come from? In all fairness, the Clippers players work for any monies they receive from Sterling. When all is said and done Sterling’s money pays their

bills and keeps the Clippers players living lavish lifestyles. The better a Clipper performs the more money Sterling shells out. People may not want to face it but the concept is an old one based on slavery. It is this truth that the NBA players may be chattel that rankles African Americans. The thought that their heroes are nothing more than high priced slaves is embarrassing to a free race of people. Whether Sterling’s comments are racist or he lied really has no meaning to anybody. African Americans aren’t going to be condemned because of the thoughts of one man. Milwaukee natives have more pressing concerns to deal with, like the murder rate in the city. All Americans have to keep focused on what is affecting their lives and not the private rants of a billion dollar man in California. Frank James IV © 2014 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the writer and not of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper or NCON Communication, its staff or management. Being Frank is a bi-weekly column exclusive to the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper.

Mental health and African American women Welansa Asrat, M.D. Psychiatrist Too often, by the time African American women seek mental health treatment, the illness has progressed to a much more severe stage than is seen in other demographic groups. Resilience is a strength that develops through the experience of overcoming adversity, but there is a limit to what any of us can safely endure. The African American tendency to endure stress with more tolerance, while beneficial in certain circumstances, can also be maladaptive and much too painful to bear. The limited use of mental health services by African

American women suggests that there are too many women who are silently suffering. Depression is often accompanied with disturbances in memory, cognition and motivation, which can negatively impact occupational and academic performance. The more severe the depression, the greater the risk of suicide. African Americans in a suicidal crisis are also less likely to verbalize any suicidal thoughts. Contrary to popular belief, suicides are rarely longplanned acts. Studies conducted on patients who survived near-lethal suicide attempts show that 25 percent of the time the decision to suicide was made just five

minutes before an attempt. Clinicians learn early on that even the most experienced practitioner can't always predict or prevent suicides. In fact, it is estimated that an inpatient psychiatric nurse will lose a patient to suicide every 2 to 3 years. Hopelessness, alcohol abuse, excessive weight gain or loss and social isolation are common warning signs of severe depression. Finding a culturally competent practitioner with whom a sense of trust can develop is crucial for a successful outcome. Taking the time to do the necessary research on a potential provider is well worth the time spent. (Continued on pg. 14)

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Celebrating the continuum of motherhood (week 1) There was an interesting blog about how mothers can better be honored on Mother’s Day during the usual Mother’s Day presentations held in places like the local church. The author who goes by the name Amy on the blog, is quite bothered when she is sitting in church and the presenter asks all mothers to stand up to be honored with gifts by their children who are present. Amy feels like it can be hurtful to others – such as women who long to be pregnant, women who have lost babies, and women whose kids have run away, women whose children are imprisoned or women whose children are away in school and not present in worship with them. Amy feels we can honor mothers without alienating others. She offered a nice prayer called “Honoring the Continuum of Motherhood.” I have borrowed Amy’s title of her prayer, (albeit slightly modified) as the title of this month’s article. We will begin this month’s series with Amy’s prayer.

The messy middle of Amy Fast forward several years to Mother’s Day. A pastor asked all mothers to stand. On my immediate right, my mother stood and on my immediate left, a dear friend stood. I, a woman in her late 30s, sat. I don’t know how others saw me, but I felt dehumanized, gutted as a woman. Real women stood, empty shells sat. I do not normally feel this way. I do not like feeling this way. I want no woman to ever feel this way in church again. It is imperative to acknowledge the wide continuum of mothering so as to not alienate any woman present at your church on Mother’s Day. Mothers, we honor: • Those who gave birth this year to their first child— we celebrate with you. • Those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you. • Those who are in the trenches with little ones every day and wear the badge of food stains – we appreciate you. • Those who experienced loss through miscarriage,

failed adoptions, or running away—we mourn with you. • Those who walk the hard path of infertility, fraught with pokes, prods, tears, and disappointment – we walk with you. Forgive us when we say foolish things. We don’t mean to make this harder than it is. • Those who are foster moms, mentor moms, and spiritual moms – we need you. • To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you. • Those who have disappointment, heartache, and distance with your children – we sit with you. • Those who lost their mothers this year – we grieve

with you. • Those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother – we acknowledge your experience. • Those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood – we are better for having you in our midst. • Those who have aborted children – we remember them and you on this day. • Those who are single mothering your own children and for you who hoped to be married by now – we mourn that life has not turned out the way you longed for it to be. • Those who step-parent – we walk with you on these complex paths. • Those who envisioned lavishing love on grandchildren -yet that dream is not to be, we grieve with you. • Those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year – we grieve and rejoice with you. • And those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising –we anticipate with you.

Beloved, while you may think Amy’s words are not perfect, it is nevertheless an interesting concept to honor mothers in all stages of the process. Mother’s Day comes only once a year. Make it special for your mother. Show her you care by acknowledging her value in your life. And if you don’t have your mom around, treat someone who is like a mother to you out for brunch or dinner on Mother’s Day. Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Mighty minis: The fascinating trace minerals (part 3) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Manganese (Mn): A key component in energy metabolism, manganese is found in the mitochondria (powerhouses of the cells). It is also important to many enzyme systems, one of which is the potent antioxidant, superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD participates in the body’s anti-inflammatory reactions. In addition, manganese is involved in the synthesis of bone, connective tissue, and cartilage. (One-quarter of the body’s Mn is found in the bones.) Mn helps the body utilize a number of vitamins, e.g., thiamine (vitamin B1),

vitamin C, and choline, and helps with protein digestion and utilization. Therapeutically, Mn is used to balance zinc and copper. It may help to prevent osteoarthritis, to balance blood sugar levels in diabetes, and to improve neurological disorders. Life Extension’s abstract on manganese lists 18 benefits of the mineral. Among these are 1) synthesizes cholesterol and fatty acids in the liver; 2) prevents the development of cancer in humans; 3) protects insulin secreting glands in the pancreas; 4) benefits sperm motility; 5) with chondroitin, hinders cartilage deterioration in osteoarthritis. Toxicity: Not well absorbed except when administered intravenously, toxicity concerns the metal, not dietary Mn. Dose: Because of the limited data available to deter-

mine the population needs, the tolerable upper limit for Mn is 2 mg daily in toddlers, and up to 11 mg daily for adults. Sources: Meat, fish, poultry, dried fruit, and nuts are good sources of manganese, but absorption is very variable. Tea contains large amounts of manganese, but its bioavailability appears to be very low. Fluoride (F): We mention fluoride last because it is designated beneficial, not essential. Unlike the other minerals, our lives don’t depend on it. Fluoride protects the teeth

by bonding with dental calcium. In fact, fluoridation of public water supplies has been endorsed by over 90 professional health organizations as the most effective dental public health measure in existence. Despite this, fluoridization of the water supply remains controversial. A paper from the Program in Dental Public Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, recommends that infants and young children not be given fluoride. Xylitol is a much safer and more effective choice. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 2,630 children compared a standard fluoride toothpaste with one that also contained 10 percent xylitol. Over a three-year period, children given the xylitol-enriched toothpaste developed notably fewer cavities than those using the fluoride-only

toothpaste. America is the only industrialized country still fluoridating water. In spite of this, about half of the US population still fails to receive the maximum benefits possible from community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride products. Supplements aren’t necessary. Adequate Intake: Men, 4 mg; women, 3 mg; children, 2 mg. Sources: Seafood, tea, and foods cooked in fluoridated water. Could more coffee lower your odds for diabetes? Yes, says study, but experts note there are better ways to reduce the risk

Drinking more coffee might lower your risk for type 2 diabetes, a new large U.S. study suggests. People who boosted their daily java intake by more than one cup over four years reduced their diabetes risk, while adults who drank less

coffee in that time frame saw their odds for diabetes rise, the study of over 123,000 adults found. “It looks like there is a dose-response relationship between increasing coffee consumption and a lower risk of diabetes,” said lead

Milwaukee Urban League to host lupus awareness event There is a mysterious and cruel autoimmune disease that has plagued women of color for years which has largely gone undetected and unreported until recently. May is Lupus Awareness Month and the Milwaukee Urban League Guild is sponsoring a Healthy Awareness Day on May 17, to increase awareness and understanding about this cruel and mysterious autoimmune disease. More than 5 million people have been stricken by this disease worldwide and approximately 1.6 million are victims of lupus in the United States. This disease strikes more women than men and two-thirds of the sufferers are women of color. On Saturday, May 17 The Milwau-

kee Urban League Guild will distribute packets of information to interested people at Lena’s Foods on Teutonia Avenue and Capitol Drive and the Midtown Piggly Wiggly from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sponsors of this event are The Milwaukee Urban League Guild, The National Council of Urban League Guilds, The Lupus Foundation of America, The LFA, Wisconsin Chapter, 98.3 AM Radio Station, Lena’s Food Market, Midtown Piggly Wiggly, and the AKA’s of Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter. If you think that you might have this disease, or you want to find out more about lupus, stop by on Saturday, May 17.

researcher Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. “Basically, the more coffee, the lower the risk of diabetes,” Hu said. “People who drink three to five cups of coffee a day enjoyed a significant reduction in type 2 diabetes risk.” However, people can drink too much coffee, particularly those who don’t respond well to caffeine, Hu cautioned. Caffeine, a stimulant, keeps some people awake, and can also cause the heart to speed up. “It’s hard to pinpoint which components of coffee may

contribute to a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes,” Hu said. “Current thinking is that it is the combination of antioxidants and other nutrients in coffee that are responsible for a lower risk of developing diabetes.” The study, published online April 24 in Diabetologia, shows an association between more coffee and lower diabetes risk but can’t actually prove that one causes the other, Hu said. However, experiments in animals and a small human trial did find a cause-and-effect relationship between coffee and reduced insulin resistance, he said. Insulin resistance is a warning

sign of diabetes. Coffee can be part of a healthy diet, but people shouldn’t look to it as a way to prevent type 2 diabetes, Hu said. “People should still watch their weight and be physically active,” he added. Like Hu, other experts aren’t ready to advise patients to up their coffee intake just yet. “It appears from the study that coffee can protect at least certain populations from developing type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Joel Zonszein, director of the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. “However, as with everything else, the message is not drinking coffee to prevent diabetes, but rather balancing all good elements in life so they can all be used and consumed with moderation,” he said. Dr. Spyros Mezitis, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said a drawback of the study is that the data was all selfreported by the participants.

“Black and White: The Way I See It” by Richard Williams with Bart Davis

c.2014, Atria $25.00/$28.99 Canada 304 pages Everything can change in an instant. That’s how it goes: one minute, you’re on a good path and the next minute, you’re heading in another direction. The game-changer might be something small, something you never noticed before – or, as you’ll see in “Black and White: The Way I See It” by Richard Williams (with Bart Davis), it could

be something huge. Throughout his years, Richard Williams almost died several times. The first was when his laboring mother nearly lost her life and her son en route to a Shreveport, Louisiana, hospital that accepted “Negroes.” That was an inauspicious beginning to Williams’ angry childhood, which grew worse due to an absent father and a mother’s struggle to raise her children in poverty. Those – and ever-present racism were things young Williams noticed. He decided that he wasn’t going to live like his mother, who accepted her lot in life. From the time he was a preschooler, he fought the people and the situations surrounding him – even when they were good: his mother found a white man who offered help, but Williams refused it. He started getting into trouble, insisting that he was the man of the house, and he gave up childhood pleasures even though he was barely old enough to

they just couldn't cope and saw suicide as the only way out. Though the study was based on a small sample of Norwegian men, it suggests a need for similar investigations on African American women who (Continued from pg. 4) seemingly commit suicide without any history Below are three useful online of mental illness. resources with detailed inAlthough a past histoformation on mental health ry of a suicide attempt providers: • Black Psychiatrists of Greater New York • Zocdoc • Psychology Today Although it is commonly held that more than 90 percent of suicides are associated with a history of mental illness, recent studies suggest that the association between the two may not necessarily be that high. After a number of successful and promising Norwegian men without any history of mental illness or depression committed suicide, a group of researchers conducted a small study and found that the men suffered from a fragile sense of worth. The researchers analyzed the suicide notes and performed in-depth interviews of family members and friends to better understand the reasons behind the suicides. Their entire self-worth was so dependent on their achievements that when they eventually encountered some sense of failure or rejection, MPTV_BlackMenInPrison.indd 1

be in grade school. Before he was a teenager, he decided he wasn’t going to pick cotton, either, but he would do what he perceived would even the score of racism. He practiced running, fast, which allowed him to escape when approached by white men with clubs. He stole increasing larger things, lied, scrapped, and resisted. More than anything, he hated – white people, other black people, his situation, poverty, everything.

Knowing that he had to leave Shreveport, Williams made his way to Chicago, but that wasn’t a better place. He headed back to Louisiana, then decided to find his fortune in California. He studied and worked, planned and resisted anew, built a business and worked some more. And then three things turned his life around: a “beautiful” woman and two children named Venus and Serena. “Black and White” is one is a risk factor for another attempt, nine out of 10 patients who survive a suicide attempt do not go on to die from another one. Simply being present for those who are struggling while simultaneously encouraging the use of mental health services is

huge surprise of a book. For the first half, author Richard Williams (with Bart Davis) rants and roams: the anger is so shockingly strong that it pulses from each page and, much like his daughters’ tennis volleys, the story goes back and forth until you’re dizzy. There are also seventyyear-old quotes that are inherently fiction and parts you won’t even want to read, including a gruesome bit about digging in his mother’s grave. But then this book abruptly switches, focusing like a laser. Williams hones in on tennis, his decision to raise two stars in the sport, and his 75page plan to make it happen. This second half of his story is amazing, in part because it contrasts so highly with the angry and scattered first half. Overall, this isn’t a bad book, but it should be approached with caution and openness. Know that, and “Black and White: The Way I See It” might serve you well.
