2014 Black & White Ball brings in $307,000 in proceeds to support Milwaukee Urban League programs The 2014 Black and White Ball, held on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee proved to be another successful fundraiser for the Milwaukee Urban League. This year, the event raised more than $307,000 and included a special appeal to provide laptop computers for high achieving high school students. Money raised during this signature annual fundraiser also goes to support the League's vital programs in the areas of youth and education; youth workforce development; and economic development. The event raised more than $25,000 during the evening's silent auction. In addition, the 800 guests were entertained by the R&B group After Seven, The Larry Moore Trio, and popular local longtime DJ Phil Anderson.

Several corporations presented specal gifts at the ball, including MillerCoors, which presented the League with a check for $60,000. Pictured (left photo) during the check presentation are MillerCoors Director of Shared Services-Finance Chantel Byrd; Milwaukee Urban League Board Chair Vivian King; and Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Ralph Hollmon. Among the 800 guests who supported the Mil-

Moral Monday movement comes to Milwaukee Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, from North Carolina spoke passionately Friday, June 13, 2014, during a noon time press conference held at the Milwaukee Branch NAACP office, on the importance for NAACP branches across the nation building coalitions. Dubbed Moral Monday, this movement began in North Carolina as a protest and civil disobedience against the state legislature, which resulted in protestors being peacefully arrested. Rev. Barber came to Milwaukee on June 13 by request of the Wisconsin NAACP State Conference of Branches. The Milwaukee Branch of the NAACP held the training along with a statewide progressive coalition of labor, social justice and community leaders. As co-founder of the Moral Monday Movement, Rev. Barber was sought out because of the successes and their corresponding impact on social and political issues, which affect people of all races and economic strata. According to Rev. Barber, the Moral Monday movement, now in its seventh year, “didn’t just happen overnight.” But, because of the

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II uniqueness of every NAACP branch, it’s not necessary to have a national person come in to lead local movements. “When I come in to train, I suggest some best practices. And like the prophets in the Bible, each one had a region in which they worked.” “You cannot just have one coalition and focus on one issue; you need to have groups involved who support what you’re doing, even if you don’t always agree,” Rev. Barber emphasized. Coalitions in Milwaukee is nothing new, but this idea of a Moral Monday and holding our elected officials accountable for what we elect them to do is a win - win for all people.

On Thursday, June 12, 2014 Jennifer Lopez was performing with Pit Bull in front of thousands of soccer fans in Brazil at the opening of the World Cup soccer games. Twenty-four hours later on Friday, June 13, the singer and American Idol judge drew a massive crowd in… Menomonee Falls?! That’s right — the Jennifer Lopez. Lopez was at Kohl’s Corporate Office to be part of a surprise, one-of-a-kind event — a celebrity fashion show featuring looks from the summer 2014 collection, including those bearing the Jennifer Lopez brand. More than 3,000 Kohl’s associates attended the fashion show.

Being Frank Father’s Day has just passed. Many fathers received gifts from loving children and spouses. Some fathers enjoyed lavish meals consisting of several courses. By the end of the day fathers all over the USA were feeling appreciated and loving to-

wards children and spouses. In celebration of the African American father let's give him one more gift. Lets give the African American father the permission to grow up. For years on Father’s Day many fathers have received gifts that wind up on shelves

One final gift or in closets. Examples of such gifts are: golf clubs or ties that are rarely used or worn. In the African American community fathers eat meals that contribute to a high cholesterol count, then watch television. As one parting gift let’s give the Afri-

can American father permission to grow up. The African American father is usually one of the most miserable things on the planet. In many cases the African American father is just a paycheck to the household. The majority of African

American fathers only have as much say as their wives allow them. The typical African American father usually isn’t even in charge of discipline in the home, quite the opposite. The average African American father usually receives discipline from his loving wife. The African American father may rise up every once in a while, but he then tucks his head and sits down. These are the actions of a child. The outlaw African American father, the deadbeat dad, is similar to a child also. This version of the African American father runs and hides until the law catches him. Then just like an unruly child, he is punished. Like a mother taking her son’s candy, the judge takes the African American father’s money. It’s time for the African American father to grow up. Many African American men believe that paying the bills and coming around the child makes a great father. This is partly true but how damaging is it for a son to see his father treated like a child by his mother? No one is suggesting the father dominate the house because this is damaging to the daughter’s psyche. What the African American male needs to establish is a presence of manhood. This is much more valuable than paying the bills. The majority of African American fathers dress similar to children. How many times have you seen grown men wearing baseball caps to a dinner date? It looks perverse because the female is dressed up and the male is dressed like he’s headed to shag fly balls. It looks like a mother going someplace with her son, not her husband. A son growing up looking at this from his father has no concept of when to stop dressing like a child. Sadly, females have grown accustomed to men dressing like this. When you see African American males out shopping with their families, who (Continued on pg. 4)

One final gift (Continued from pg. 3) is doing the leading? In the majority of cases the female is doing all the talking and directing of the outing. The African American father is just there to pay the bill or be watched like a child by the mother so he doesn’t get into trouble. How does this shape a young boy’s image of how a man should act? More importantly how does this image shape how a young female’s perception of men? Our final Father’s Day gift to the African American father is permission to grow up. All African American men, father or not, can par-

take of this gift. From now on it is okay for you to behave like a man and dress like one. African American fathers can put the gym shoes up and take the baseball caps off. More importantly African American men can be a man to their children. Rebuilding our Community By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Black fathers – Defying the odds “There’s so much negative imagery of black fatherhood. I’ve got tons of friends that are doing the right thing by their kids, and doing the right thing as a father – and how come that’s not as newsworthy?” Those were the words and question posed by Willard C. Smith, better known as Will Smith from TV, film and music. He has become one of the most recognizable actors around the world. In fact, according to Forbes Magazine, he is one of the most bankable worldwide stars. In 1990, he was the leading character in the TV sitcom for NBC, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which became successful and began his acting career. Since that time, he has starred in several blockbuster movies including Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, Independence Day, Men in Black, and Enemy of the State. Over the years, he has been active in the lives of his children and helping to improve the outcomes of other youth through the opening of a secondary school in California. As a father, he included one son in two of his movies and one in a music video. Today, there are many black fathers who are not as famous as Will Smith, but are just as engaged in the lives of their children and other youth in the community. And it is these facts that are too often overlooked or are taken for granted. In a recent study conducted by the US Department of Health and Human Services

"I'm convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they're stones that don't matter. As long as you're breathing, it's never too late to do some good." - Maya Angelou

(2006-2010) and released on December 20, 2013, 3,900 fathers defy many of the stereotypes about black fatherhood. In essence and by most measures, the report reveals that black fathers are at least as involved with their kids as other men in similar living situations. In particular the report is called “Father’s Involvement in Their Children: United States, 20062010,” and it revealed that 70 percent of black dads said they bathed, diapered or dressed their kids every day, compared with 60 percent of white fathers and 45 percent of Latino fathers. In addition, nearly 35 percent of black fathers who lived with their young children stated that they read to them daily, compared with 30 percent of white and 22 percent of Latino dads. This report is quite amaz-

ing when you consider what we see and hear about black men and black boys in our country these days. It is more remarkable especially when so many black men are in jails, prisons, on the street, homeless, lack education, are unemployed, or on drugs. I would agree with most perceptions and stereotypes that in many communities a lot of work needs to be done to help change the narrative of what is occurring, but it is not true in all cases, communities and families. The question today is how can we do a better job in promoting the positive images of Black Fathers? Dr. Calhoun can be heard each week at the Grace Fellowship Church of Milwaukee, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd, Milwaukee, 414-265-5546, like him on Facebook, Twitter #AC53 or andrewiiicalhoun@gmail.com.

Why is this so? to evangelize my neighbor, Ben Johnson shares survey I wouldn’t know where to data in his book, Evangelism start.” (Lack of skills) Primer, and cites ten barriers 8. “I’ve always felt that to traditional evangelism: a person’s faith was private 1. “I don’t want my and I don’t know want to infriends to turn me off be- trude. Besides, it’s not polite cause I’m religious!” (Fear of to talk about religion in pubrejection) lic.” (A private affair) 2. “Other persons are 9. “I think we hire the more gifted in personal wit- preacher to do the evangelizness than I.” (Not gifted) ing.” (A hired Christian)

they are self-righteous and smug in complacent consecration, when they are narrow and repressive, then Christianity dies a thousand deaths.” May I ask you a question: Are you a doer of the word and not merely a hearer only?

10. “Most evangelism I know about discounts persons by manipulating them to make decisions they later regret.” (Fear manipulation) Interestingly, Ben Johnson notes fear was the #1 reason persons gave as a barrier to evangelism. But, God is not a God of fear and timidity. (2 Timothy 1:7). Therefore, the spirit of fear and timidity is not of God, rather of Satan, and can be overcome by the believer through prayer and fasting. The bottom line is, lifestyle evangelism is nontraditional and does not require a strategy: rather, living the life that Jesus calls us to live. The only strategy Jesus

Education

Tips to keep students engaged in learning over summer break

With the school year coming to a close, many parents wonder how to keep their children active and engaged in learning during the traditional summer recess. According to Jack Connell, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, when children are inactive mentally and physically during the summer, they often have to take time to get back up to speed in the fall. Below are some tips for summer learning: 1. Turn off the television and computer and play outside: Call your neighbors and start a volleyball game in your yard. Dust off the old Slip Slide and invite some kids over for water fun. Physical activity helps prevent the silent epidemic of childhood obesity. Teamwork teaches children about the values of helping, sharing, listening, respecting, and participating. 2. Watch educational programs: If it's too hot outside there are several educational programs on television, such as "The Electric Company" or "Sesame Street" on your local PBS stations. These programs are also online and offer activity and educational resources for children. For more information, please visit Home - Sesame Street or The Electric Company

MPTV_CivilRightsAd.indd 1

3. Set aside time each day to read: Read the morning newspaper with your children, or find a good book at the library or bookstore. Reading keeps children's minds active and engaged and ready to learn when they go back to school. Search the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Recommended Literature database that will help you find age-appropriate materials at Search List, Recommended Literature for Reading and Language Arts, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve. 4. Volunteer: Summer jobs for teens can be scarce because of the economy. Instead, encourage your children to volunteer at your local nonprofit agency, help some elderly neighbors, or those less fortunate. 5. Encourage children to create their own job: Children can mow lawns, pet sit, house sit, or take care of your neighbors' plants while they are on vacation. Or they can babysit after getting lessons from your local Ameri-

can Red Cross Chapter. Search for lessons near you at American Red Cross, keyword "babysitting lessons." Work helps children learn about responsibility and financial literacy. 6. Start a scrapbook: Find all your old vacation pictures that are stashed away in boxes and work with your children to put together a scrapbook. This helps preserve your fun vacation memories, initiates family conversations, and helps you bond during the tough economic times. 7. Visit your local mu-

While at the grocery store, let the children add up the price of groceries. This will teach them about math. 9. Cook dinner together: Let your children help you prepare a meal. This teaches them how to be self-sufficient and independent. Let them measure out the ingredients and teach them how the ingredients interact with each other. This allows them to practice their math and chemistry skills. 10. Let your kids teach you how to use a computer: Using technology comes naturally to children who were born in the Internet age. Letting them be the teacher teaches them how to engage their parents in conversation, patience, and makes you listen to each other, which may become a bonding experience.

seums: Families sometimes only go to museums when they're on vacation and rarely visit their own hometown's facilities. The American Association of Museums reports attending a museum is very affordable and often free. Search for a museum near you at AAM Member Museum Directory 8. Go grocery shopping Information adapted from: with your children: Let "Tips to Keep Children Engaged them help you plan your in Learning During Summer Remeals. Health & Fitness

Top 10 men's health issues

Regular exercise is key to preventing many chronic illnesses Certain health principles are universal--human biology works a certain way--but men and women have different health risks, especially as they age. Men are more likely than women to skip doctor's visits and wellness checkups, but prevention goes a long way toward reducing your risk of the top 10 health risks for men. Heart disease Heart disease kills 27.2 percent of men of all races, according to the National Women's Health Information Center. Eat a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise and maintain a healthy weight to reduce your risk, MayoClinic.com advises. Cancer Lung cancer, followed by prostate cancer and colorectal cancer, is the leading cancer killer in men. Quit smoking now, and see your doctor for regular checkups and screenings. Getting to a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet can also reduce your risk of cancer, according to MayoClinic.com. Diabetes Erectile dysfunction, kidney disease and vision prob-

lems are all signs of type 2 diabetes, in which your body fails to use the insulin it makes from the food you eat. Family history, age and race play a role, but eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and eating a low-sugar diet can prevent or postpone the onset, according to WomensHealth.gov. Prostate health As you age, your prostate gland can enlarge, causing difficulty urinating or fre-

quent urination. This can be a benign condition, or it can be caused by an infection or even cancer. See your doctor for regular prostate exams to catch irregularities before they start, FamilyDoctor.org says. Erectile dysfunction Most common in men over 75, erectile dysfunction, or ED, can occur at any age. Caused by chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis, ED

can also be caused by stress, fatigue or prescription medication. Many treatment options are available, but you must first treat the underlying cause. Mental health Suicide kills 2.2 percent of men. Although suicide is attempted more by women, men are more likely to succeed. A man's suicide risk peaks in his 20s, and then later in his 60s and 70s, and is even greater if he is unemployed, socially isolated or chronically ill. If you feel depressed, seek treatment from your doctor, a therapist, or call a suicide prevention hotline. Accidental injuries Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatal accidents for men, followed by falls and poisoning. Wear your seat belt, obey traffic laws and don't drive when you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol or are sleepy. Use hazardous chemicals only as directed, and use carbon monoxide detectors and nonslip mats in your home. Respiratory disease Chronic lower respiratory

disease includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis and kills 5 percent of all men. The main cause is smoking, but exposure to hazardous chemicals can also contribute. Stop smoking now to reduce your risk, and use appropriate safety precautions like ventilators when working with chemicals. Kidney disease Kidney disease usually occurs secondary to diabetes or high blood pressure. If you have a chronic condition, follow your doctor's orders regarding treatment. Maintaining a healthy weight, getting plenty of exercise and limiting your salt intake can reduce your risk. Stroke Family history, age and race all contribute to your risk of stroke, but watching your weight, eating a healthy diet, quitting smoking and getting enough exercise can reduce your risk. African American men have a higher risk of stroke and of dying from a stroke because they are more likely to have high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor.

Five health self-checks every man should do (part 1) Signs of poor health can hide in some pretty unexpected places. Here’s where to look.

A lot can happen between visits to the doctor—especially since more than half of men skip out on their annual physical examinations, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. “You can feel great, but still have killer numbers,” says Bruce B. Campbell, MD, a men's health specialist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. “Killer” is not a good thing in this example. That’s why it’s so important to perform regular self-exams. And sorry, men – a testicular cancer self-exam isn’t enough to keep your vitals in check. From head to toe, small changes can be red flags of

serious medical conditions— ones to take to your doctor ASAP. Here are the most surprising (and easy, and quick) self-checks to make part of your morning routine. Check: your hair If you see: Your hair falling out in spots. It could mean: While a receding hairline is just nature doing its thing (sorry!), your hair coming out in clumps could be stress wrecking its own havoc, Campbell says. Stress hormones can cause white blood cells to attack the hair follicles, putting your strands into no-grow mode. What’s more, when your hair growth is shut off, it can easily come out in clumps when combing or shower-

ing. While annoying, this is really just a symptom of a larger problem, as chronic stress can increase your risk of everything from heart disease to memory impairment, Campbell says. Follow up: Understand that “stress” is not a thing all by itself. It’s a reaction – your reaction to outside life factors. If you react negatively, you feel “stress.” Talk to your doctor or psychiatrist about stress management techniques such as exercise and meditation. If you have an anxiety disorder, these professionals can spot it and prescribe medications to help take the edge off. And while knocking your stress habit will help get your hair grow-

ing, you can speed things up on are both pretty good bets by getting plenty of healthy- for a full head of hair. hair nutrients such as iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and vita(Continued next week) min B12. Broccoli and salm-
