Milwaukee Boys & Girls Club teens urged to take pledge to keep eyes on the road, not on their phones AT&T, AAA, Wisconsin State Patrol bring simulator to club to highlight dangers of distracted driving

On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, teens at the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club in Milwaukee learned about the dangers of smartphone activities while driving and had the chance to experience the hazards firsthand when the AT&T It Can Wait® virtual reality driving simulator visited the Club. AT&T, AAA and the Wisconsin State Patrol brought the virtual reality driving simulator to the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club as part of the It Can Wait® campaign to remind students that smartphone activity should wait until after driving. Teens were also encouraged to sign a pledge to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phones. “Many of today’s young drivers are texting or looking down at their phones when their eyes should be on the road,” said Vincent Lyles, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “Here at the Clubs, one of our primary goals is to keep our kids safe, and that includes helping them make good choices when

they are behind the wheel. We hope our young people take the It Can Wait message to heart.” The AT&T virtual reality driving simulator is visiting Milwaukee as part of AT&T’s nationwide tour to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. The simulator gives students the chance to virtually experience what happens when you text and drive. The effort is part of AT&T’s It Can Wait® campaign, which has expanded from a focus on texting while driving to include other smartphone activities now common behind the wheel. “When we launched the It Can Wait campaign five years

Being Frank The crimes being committed today are borderline ridiculous. The petty mindset that seems to rule the average person is hindering society. In the African American community the need for perceived respect has caused untold misery. One classic example is the murder of Abbas Yasin. Yasin is the 82-year-old man who was supposedly punched by a teen-age boy after getting off the bus. Yasin fell and later died from the injury. The teen’s image was caught on the bus cameras. As of this writing the teen still hasn’t been arrested. Yasin’s murder was pointless and unparalleled in its stupidity. Let’s break the incident down. It was reported the teen got into an argument with Yasin on the bus. What teen in his right mind argues with an elderly man? What can arguing with a man that old prove? Too many young, and old, people are out trying to make a reputation for themselves. Maybe the teen felt he could go brag back in the hood about how he checked an old man. The teen supposedly followed Yasin off the bus and punched him causing him to fall and hit his head. This led to Yasin being taken to the hospital where he later died on May 9, 2016. If this ac-

smartphone distractions for drivers. Not only are drivers texting, but they are also emailing, posting on social media and even taking videos when they should be focused on driving,” said Alderman Khalif Rainey. AT&T first launched the It Can Wait® campaign in 2010 to educate the public about the dangers of texting while driving and encourage people to take the pledge to not text and drive at www.ItCanWait.com. The campaign has now expanded and turned into a national social movement with support from organizations all over the country, including the Wisconsin State Patrol and AAA. Since 2010, AT&T, AAA and the State Patrol have partnered together to hold events in 99 cities throughout Wisconsin, reaching over 40,000 high school students. The It Can Wait® campaign has inspired nearly 8.4 million pledges not to text and drive across the country. Visit www.ItCanWait.com to learn more.

count is correct, the teen has a lot to brag on. The teen not only checked an elderly man, but also killed him. Is this the type of people the African American community is producing today? Is this the reason King and those civil rights marchers faced those dogs and fire hoses? We have to ask the question, how is the teen still free? If the teen was a high level street hustler, why was he riding the bus? A proven thug wouldn’t need to argue with Yasin to build a reputation. In all likelihood the teen was a nobody on the streets. People he knows and trusts are probably protecting this teen. That leads us to ask, who would protect someone who commits such a stupid crime? This isn’t harboring a high-level drug dealer. This isn’t even harboring someone who drove drunk and killed someone by accident. This is protecting a disgrace. There was a time when people had pride in who they were and what their family was about. Those times have evolved into something that is warped. The average family in the African American community is a dislocated entity. Mothers raise children with no father and this leads to a neutering of the sons. Fathers are boys who never grow up. ago, our message was simple – no text is worth a life,” said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. “The same applies to other smartphone activities. We are urging drivers, especially teens, to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phones.” In December 2015, Wisconsin marked the five-year anniversary of its ban on texting while driving. “Even though it’s against the law and extremely dangerous, we know some people are still texting on their phones while driving when they shouldn’t be,” said State Representative Evan Goyke. “Campaigns like It Can Wait are a great way to spread

awareness about the dangers and encourage drivers of all ages to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.” “If you text while driving, your hands are not on the steering wheel, your eyes are not on the road, and your attention is not on the traffic and road conditions around you,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Stephen Fitzgerald. “Texting while driving will, without a doubt, increase your risk of causing a crash or failing to avoid one. You are putting yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road in grave danger.” Research from AT&T shows 7 in 10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving. Texting and emailing are still the most prevalent, but 4 in 10 drivers also tap into social media. More than 25 percent are on Facebook, 1 in 7 are on Twitter, almost 3 in 10 surf the net, and surprisingly, 1 in 10 video chat. “Advancements in technology have led to a growth in the number and type of

grow to develop pride. Harboring this teen after the criminal act he is accused of is shameful to the world. If the teen is innocent then he has nothing to fear (well maybe something) from the law. How can a parent look a child in the face who supposedly attacked an 82-year-old man? How can anyone look this person in the face? How ironic the times have become. It has been said that when the Black Panthers were around there were police informants everywhere. The Panthers were revolutionaries who wanted change in the African American community. The people they wanted to help often sold out the Panthers. A teen supposedly argues with, and then attacks, an elderly man and no one knows anything. Is this the type of community African Americans died to create? Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

The Triple Nickels There are a lot of stories from World War II that get most of the headlines these days, including Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Midway, Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During each of these major events of that war there were a number military units, ships and personal stories that are highlighted through which much of the war is told. But there were other (Black, Native and Japanese American) military units and personal stories that most of us have never heard of that also played a vital role during WWII. Some of us know of the role of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Indian Code Talkers, but what about the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, nicknamed the “Triple Nickels”? Well you are not alone. This unit was a 20-member “colored test platoon” from

the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division. It was born within an army that was still segregated and had traditionally relegated blacks to menial jobs and programmed them for failure. However, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, or “Triple Nickels,” succeeded in becoming the nation’s first all-black parachute infantry test platoon, company and battalion from 1943-45. One of the most notable operations that the 555th per-

formed came in 1945 when a request came from the U.S. Forest Service to fight blazing forest fires in the American Northwest. It was also important to know that the Japanese were at the time floating incendiary devices attached to balloons across the Pacific Ocean, which took advantage of the jet stream’s easterly flow and would perhaps land in the Northwest. In addition, the unit was to confront a new dimension in warfare involving the use

LoveKindness

of biological agents that could destroy woodlands and crops. Because of their skill and abilities they became history’s first military “Smoker Jumpers.” During their assignment in the northwest they answered 36 fire calls with more than 1,200 individual jumps during the summer of 1945. A major element in their success was that, unlike other black infantry units commanded by white officers, this unique army unit commanding structure was entirely black. As time when along, these pioneers blazed new trails for countless black soldiers to follow. The 555th also helped in the formation of other Battalions, Airborne Infantry Regiments and Special Forces. The truly amazing part of their story was how they as black soldiers had gone from riding in the back of trucks, buses, used “colored” toilets and drinking fountains in railroad

stations, sitting in segregated sections of theaters, and going out of their way to avoid confrontation with racist police to a military unit that kept the Northwest forest fires in check and was called by General Ben Lear, “one of the finest groups of soldiers" he had ever seen. Now that is some history. Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, and Facebook. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Love Kindness Awards Here we are attending many graduation ceremonies as children move from one school to another while their older siblings graduate from college and enter the work force. Many deserved awards will be given out to celebrate academic, artistic and athletic achievements. We can all remember those moments in our own lives and in those of our children and grandchildren. So, while we are observing and enjoying these events once again let us consider what may being neglected. Why do we not give awards for Kindness? It is easy to make a case that how we treat others is per- havior. To prove this point, memorial service note what haps the most important be- the next time you attend a is remembered regarding the person who has passed away. What would you like to be said by your friends and family members at your memorial service? It is surprisingly difficult to think about how we will be remembered after we are gone, even though so much has been written about exactly that subject. When we are young we do not give much attention to our legacy; but later on it does receive more attention, and yet, habits are hard to break. Developing a Kindness habit at an early age can have a profound impact on happiness www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

and success as we all know. Why then do we not reward kind behavior in our schools? What would Milwaukee be like if every school regarded kindness as being as important as any other aspect of education? If we are unwilling to teach kind behavior and reward kind behavior in our schools, how do we expect children to understand the importance of kindness? It is too late this year for us to initiate a city wide Love Kindness award program in our schools; but this is a good time for us to consider such a program for next year. We have the resources to fund such a program; all that is lacking is the will. So this column presents a challenge. As you attend graduation ceremonies think about encouraging that school to institute a yearlong Love Kindness program beginning next year. Have them contact me at msrobertson23@gmail. com or miltimes@gmail. com. Let’s start a movement right here in Milwaukee. We also want to hear any kindness stories you might want to share. You can help us take that first step by mailing or emailing me your kindness stories and nominations. These will be printed in fu-

ture columns and everyone who sends in a nomination will receive a Love Kindness package. We want to share these inspiring stories with others so that we can begin to change what we consider to be important. Kindness is much more important than violence so let us begin to truly Love Kindness! Email your Kindness stories and nominations to miltimes@ gmail.com , or mail them to the Milwaukee Times, 1936 N. A celebration of Motherhood (Conclusion)

“Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” - Exodus 20:12

God gives us mother as a gift and God commands that we revere them just as we are careful to obey all of God’s commandments. Along with reverence, we are to honor mothers. Regardless of how old you are, whether you live near or far from your mother; your mother always deserves your honor. In concluding this series on the Celebration of Motherhood, may your heart be made glad as you read the final submissions from two proud mamas: Motherhood has been an awesome experience and an opportunity to teach, learn, instill and empower. It is and will always be a huge responsibility that should never be taken for granted. We were put on this earth to teach our offspring about our life experiences, how to make the right choices when choosing the correct path in life and what it takes to be a good citizen. I do this willingly and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Bible Scripture for the week from Psalm 22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth[d] is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce[e] my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Sheriff David Clarke, Jr., visited the Milwaukee Collegiate Academy on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. He met with Dr. Howard Fuller, the school's founder and chair who was formerly superintendent of MPS, and is currently a Professor of Education and Director of the Institute for the Transformation of Learning at Marquette University. Two senior students, Taleavia Cole, and Taymon O’Neal, conducted a tour of the school and explained the college-preparatory curriculum. Pictured are senior students Taymon O’Neal (left) and Taleavia Cole (right) posing in front of the college acceptance wall in the school lobby with Sheriff David Clarke (center).

The Roselette Dancers celebrate 25 years

On Thursday, March 26, 2016 the legendary Roselette Dancers celebrated their 25th anniversary at the Clinton and Bernice Rose Center. The Roselette Dancers were formed in 1991 by Fannie Dunlap and 20 other women ages 50+ who were enjoying the facilities at the Clinton & Bernice Rose Senior Center, 3045 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. All that the women wanted to do was dance for fun and later for performance. The same desire remains within the members of the Roselettes today. The Roselettes have designed their own dances and

coordinated other hip party dances to properly fit their image. All the dances allow the Roselette Dancers to perform as one unit of mature, elegant line dancers. Each year The Roselette Dancers present their annual show in June; this year's show is to be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. The audience is treated to a full repertoire of the group's dances. The Roselettes are always adding and dropping dances routines, but a couple of original dances, like the Lucille Slide and Tender Moments, still remain today.

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors on Thursday, May 26, 2016, approved a 2016-17 budget for Milwaukee Public Schools that increases support to schools by $26.6 million compared to the current school year. The plan puts 90 cents of every dollar in the district’s School Operations Fund toward the direct education of students. That compares to 87 cents last year. “This budget is a win for our children and for our staff, putting more resources into classrooms and schools,” Board President Mark Sain said. MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver said the budget reflects the district’s plan to succeed. “It is a blueprint for building on past accomplishments and funding future achievement. We crafted the 201617 budget with our most precious resource–MPS students–at the forefront, placing significant emphasis on supports that will also provide our staff with the tools to grow our success.” The budget builds on the district’s Eight Big Ideas– strategic objectives focused on improving student achievement, community partnerships and district operations. Among the highlights of the approved 2016-17 $1.1 billion budget are: • Support for Phase II of the Regional Development plan, which is increasing more high-performing,

Scleroderma facts vs. fiction Queen Latifah looks up to her mother, Rita Owens. In a recent public service announcement for the American Heart Association, Queen Latifah describes that her mother was diagnosed in 2013 with scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disease that caused scar tissue to build up in her lungs, requiring her to be on oxygen around the clock. Owens, like many others, may not have been aware of the many ways systemic scleroderma can affect the body’s organs. With scleroderma affecting an estimated 300,000 Americans and African Americans being diagnosed more frequently and at an earlier age than other ethnic groups, it’s important to know the facts. Myth: Scleroderma is a disease that only affects the skin. Truth: Scleroderma is primarily characterized by

Queen Latifah with mother, Rita Owens thickening of the skin, but this chronic connective tissue disease can affect the blood vessels and internal organs in addition to the skin. Localized scleroderma affects certain parts of the body (usually the skin), but with systemic scleroderma the entire body can be affected – skin, kidneys, digestion,

joint, teeth, lungs, heart and Raynaud’s Phenomenon. Myth: Scleroderma is a genetic disease. Truth: Scientists do not know what causes scleroderma, but researchers do not believe it is passed on through genes. According to the Scleroderma Foundation, “Most patients do not have

any relatives with scleroderma and their children do not get scleroderma. Research indicates that there is a susceptibility gene, which raises the likelihood of getting scleroderma, but by itself does not cause the disease.” Myth: Scleroderma only happens to “old” people. Truth: Scleroderma can develop in every age group, from infants to the elderly. Typically, onset is between the ages of 25-55. Localized scleroderma is more common in children and systemic scleroderma is more common in adults. Women are diagnosed more than men and as mentioned earlier, African Americans are diagnosed with systemic scleroderma more than other groups. Myth: It’s easy to diagnose scleroderma. Truth: It’s difficult to diagnose scleroderma because it shares many symptoms with other autoimmune condi-

tions. Noticing a rapid thickening of the skin can make it easier to properly diagnose, but often scleroderma can go undiagnosed or even misdiagnosed. Myth: You can “catch” scleroderma from someone else. Truth: Scleroderma is not contagious. Myth: Scleroderma can be cured. Truth: Unfortunately, scleroderma is not curable. However, there are treatments to help manage symptoms and reduce progressive damage. Treatment varies from person to person. If you think that you have scleroderma, it’s important to see a doctor right away to determine whether you have the disease. If you have scleroderma you should begin to receive treatment as soon as possible.

Five things every African American should know about HIV/AIDS in 2016 Yes, it’s 2016 – nearly 35 years since the first cases of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. But, the sexually transmitted disease is just as dangerous today as it was years ago. More than 37 million people were living with HIV by the end of 2014, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And since the early 1980s, about 39 million people have died from infection across the world. Here are some things to keep in mind about the disease: Who is more at risk? Black men just can’t catch a break. According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 1 in 20 black men will contract HIV in their lifetime. That’s compared to 1 in 132 white men. Black people have to be careful in general, though. We are the most at risk to catch HIV than any other racial group. The dirty south Sorry, southerners. You are more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than anyone else in the U.S., the CDC reports. Poverty and lack of access to healthcare are a couple of the reasons why this is so.

Washington D.C. ranks the highest on the prevalence list, followed by Maryland, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana. Gay or straight? Unfortunately, 1 in 6 men who have sex with men (MSM) will become infected with HIV in their lifetime, according to the CDC. Also, half of black men and a quarter of Latino men who engage in sex with men are more at risk for the virus, as well. Getting tested There are options. You don’t have to visit a doctor to get tested these days. You can also take an at-home test. Fourth-generation blood

tests can detect the virus within days to weeks after exposure. Make sure you find a test site near you, or ask your physician about athome tests. Treatment guidelines Today, new WHO guidelines state people diagnosed with HIV should take antiretroviral therapy medication as soon as possible. It’s not a cure, but it can stop the virus from multiplying and transmission through sex. It can also prevent the virus from developing into AIDS. If you fear that you may have been exposed to HIV,

“Chasing Perfection” by Andy Glockner All air. Is there anything better in basketball? It’s sheer poetry, absolute magic, and your team can’t do it enough – especially when it happens from the three-point line. In the new book “Chasing Perfection” by Andy Glockner, you’ll see how science is trying to ensure that it does, as much as possible. Ask any baseball fan about their favorite player or team, and you’ll likely hear stats. Baseball is known for that but baseball, says Glockner, is a relatively easy game to

analyze. Basketball, on the other hand, is different. Players in basketball have no set pattern for play. Analytics for basketball, therefore, is a big business. It all started, perhaps not surprisingly, with baseball when Bill James began his Baseball Abstract in the late 1970s. Shortly after that publication appeared, a computer database for basketball was created to “crudely… determine a value for adding a new player to an existing team” but, amazingly, few people

were interested in the information and work on the system ended. Nearly twenty years later, “a handful” of analysts started working on sophisticated, deeply detailed basketball metrics, and an industry was born. While it’s true that analytics may be of interest to fans, the information absolutely benefits owners, coaches, managers, and agents. Through basketball analytics, coaches can maximize each individual player's time on the court. Analytics can show what happens when

c.2016, Da Capo Press $25.99 / $33.99 Canada 274 pages a certain play is used, and where. The information even “comes into play in actual roster construction…” says Glockner. But numbers-crunching isn’t the only thing that is revolutionizing the game. Glockner says that “cutting-edge professional sports diagnostics” can determine which exercises and motions can enhance physical performance without causing injury. He says that “sophisticated scales” now measure “force and explosiveness.” Team doctors use technology to promote muscle balance and flexibility and they can predict specifically where on the body an injury might take place.

And yet – it still all boils down to the human factor: coaches and general managers are needed to sort through the information and determine what’s important. And even if they do pick the right information, players are still fallibly human. Okay, if you’re a casual basketball fan, you can stop reading now. You’ve probably already figured out that this just isn’t a book for you. Nope, “Chasing Perfection” is a fierce fan’s book, filled with metrics and possibilities featuring names you won’t recognize, and some you will. That might include the name of Andy Glockner, whose basketball-writing background gave him access to corporations that are working to create perfection on the court. Glockner’s fascinating behind-thescenes research shows how computers are altering not only the human body but the game itself and how, as technology becomes more refined, fans can expect even greater feats of athleticism and deepened strategy. Again, this is not a book for casual fans. It’s filled with head-scrambling information that won’t make much sense to you if you don’t know the game well. But if the thought of the upcoming off-season scares you and you need more b-ball, in “Chasing Perfection,” it’s all there.
