Brain, Brawn and Body presents Health and Wellness Summit Leonard Wilson, Jr., owner of Divine Personal Fitness Training, LLC, leads an early morning volunteer calisthenics class at the “Brain, Brawn & Body Health & Wellness Summit for Men and the People Who Love Them” educational festival co-sponsored by BrainBrawn&Body.com and the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Group at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott St., on June 20, 2015. The day-long program offered health screening, counseling on diet, exercise, obtaining affordable healthcare and physical activities, some of which were led by Packer legends Gilbert Brown, LeRoy Butler, George Koonce and Harry Sydney. In his welcome to the summit attendees, event organizer and publisher of BrainBrawn&Body.com Eric Von said, "With our website, Brain Brawn & Body and this event, it is our hope that men adopt the good habits that will lead to longer, more fulfilling lives for them and their loved ones." That was the perfect sentiment, given that Father's Day was the next day.

Milwaukee Urban League hosts annual Black and White Ball

The 2015 Black and White Ball, held on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee proved to be another successful fundraiser for the Milwaukee Urban League. This year, the event raised more than $300,000 and included a

special appeal to provide laptop computers for high achieving high school students. This year's event also celebrated 30 years of the Urban League's Black and White Ball. Money raised during this signature annual fundraiser goes to support the League's vital programs in the areas of youth and education; youth workforce development; and economic development. Several corporations presented special gifts at the ball, including We Energies, which presented the League with a check for $25,000. Pictured (left photo) during the check presentation are Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Ralph Hollmon, We Energies Vice President Local Affairs Thelma Sias, and Urban League board chair and Johnson Controls assistant chief human resources officer Simon Davis. Among the 800 guests who supported the Milwaukee Urban League by attending the 2015 Black and White Ball (right photo) are members of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Staff Photo

An Opinion to Consider… Black citizens must have conversation among themselves before requesting one with other races Comforting words evoked at vigil for Charleston’s victims African Americans have experienced racially motivated violence for so long that some devout Christians, in trying to understand the inexplicable, have come to the erroneous conclusion that the shooting of nine black church members by a white supremacist was somehow God’s will. No, this was the work of a mentally unstable racist with a gun and lots of bullets. God did not will that that trigger be pulled again and again. The statement that the shooting was “God’s will” was repeated many times during an interfaith vigil held June 22 at Wisconsin’s oldest African American church, St. Mark’s African Methodist Episcopal Church. At times when one is called upon to offer comforting words, that phrase is usually innocuous, but within this context it perpetuates the sense of

cluded gun control, jobs for unemployed African Americans and better education. Sadly, the last time an African American Photo by Yvonne Kemp petition Attendees at the prayer vigil at led to sigSt. Mark's AME Church. nificant reform was victimhood that grows over 50 years ago with the passage a lifetime that includes seg- of the Civil Rights Act. regation, poverty, violence, There is virtually no chance crime and disrespect. of this petition or any other During the after-service being given even a passing press conference, a number glance by the Republicanof the participating pas- controlled U.S. Congress or tors encouraged those in at- Supreme Court. Girls Night Out: Educating women of color about breast cancer Do you have questions, family history, or need resources regarding breast cancer? By: Jarreau Sims Special for the Milwaukee Times Girls Night Out is a program that addresses the questions and misconceptions about breast cancer in minority communities. The program was created by Paulette Christian in collaboration with local organizations and education institutions jointly called “The Partners in Pursuit of the Promise along with Nurses Affecting Change.” As a cancer survivor with over twenty years of experience in the medical industry, Ms. Christian felt that after overcoming her bout with cancer there was an imperative need to address the minimal access to medical information and resources available to women of color. The Girls Night Out program is free and specifically designed for women of color ages 18 and up. The program meets in hair salons primarily located in the African American community throughout the city of Milwaukee on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. This allows the program to be more accessible to its target demographic by meeting after work. Meeting in hair salons also naturally promotes an environment

they desire without fear of a Democratic veto. Instead of appealing to the deaf ears of the conservative money machine currently in power, those African Americans who are mentally and physically able need to take more personal responsibility for their own fate. Republicans are currently attempting to make it more difficult for minorities to vote. That is one of the most important ways to bring about a change in the priorities of federal and state officials, yet the percentage of African Americans who bother to show up and vote is generally well below other races. Voting was not mentioned in the petition. The African American community really needs to have an honest conversation with itself first. Do we really treat each other with dignity and respect? How about when the young woman behind the cash register at the fast food store rings up the order incorrectly or when we are late for an appointment and the car ahead won’t go faster than the speed limit? Blacks are by far the largest victim of black crime if any further proof is needed. The black businessman who’s already at a disadvantage is frequently asked to perform a service cheaper than a Caucasian who is never asked to discount a service. Then consider our lack of respect and disdain for each other,

which yields a lack of solidarity and nothing ever gets accomplished collectively. Instead of whining about what other races are denying us, it’s past time that we roll up our sleeves and work together for a unified and common purpose that will benefit our race like other races are doing. Continually repeating the same old doctrine we’ve done too many generations means we haven’t learned very much over time and don’t have a heart or soul to perpetuate a new ideology for purposeful change. There are plenty of common sense solutions we can employ in our own neighborhoods. When a drug dealer or other criminal operates in a neighborhood it is seldom a well-kept secret. Sadly the history of black and police relations is mostly a long, bitter tale of betrayals and injustice. Petitions are not the solution to police profiling. Signing a petition demanding a job paying a living wage is unrealistic. No one is going ‘to give someone a job’ for very long if that person does not add value to the business. There are many reasons why Milwaukee has one of the lowest number of minorityowned businesses of any major U.S. city, but one obvious conclusion is that African Americans in Milwaukee are not spending money in the few businesses that do exist in their neighborhoods.

Recently appointed U.S. Air Force Col. Gil B. Williams has local roots By Steve Waring Special to the Milwaukee Times Throughout 15 years flying 767 passenger planes for Delta Airlines, Lt. Col. Gil B. Williams, a Milwaukee native and 1987 graduate of Bradley Technical and Trade High School, maintained his status in the Air Force Reserve. On June 1 he was promoted to a full colonel and recalled to active duty. Out of more than 800 applicants, Col. Williams was one of only about 50 selected for promotion. He is currently assigned to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He is a senior pilot with more than 5,000 hours flying time. Col. Williams said that he never had a “Plan B” career in mind growing up. Both his father and uncle were military pilots, the latter having served with the legendary Red Tail Squadron during World War II. He commended the military as an excellent career choice for African Americans and other minorities, pointing out that the service paid for him to pursue his dream. Although he received a congressional appointment

Lt. Col. Gil B. Williams to the Air Force Academy, Col. Williams chose the ROTC program at his father’s alma mater, Howard University. After graduating in 1991, he began his Air Force career flying cargo planes, in support of rescue missions and Presidential visits. Soon he was asked to train other pilots at a base in Mississippi. After a four-year assignment there he transferred to the Pentagon where he served as director for the countries of Jordan, Kenya and the Horn of Africa. Throughout his career he continued to pursue higher education, graduating from Air Command and Staff College in 1995 and earning

an MBA from the University of Illinois in 2008. He completed an executive fellowship at Harvard University in 2010 and Air War College in 2013. He, his wife Bridgette, and their four children, Camille (11), James (10), Lauren (7) and Brandon (6) have lived in Georgia for the past seven years. Col. Williams said he has been commuting from Illinois to Georgia on weekends and would continue to do so until he learned where the Air Force wanted him stationed. He also said that in all likelihood he would probably return to reserve status after he received new orders. After graduating from high school, Col. Williams has not returned to Milwaukee for an extended period, but he has been back often to visit family and says that his formative years here helped shape his character. "Milwaukee was a wonderful, wholesome place to grow up,” he said. “I learned my ‘Midwest work ethic’ in Milwaukee.” No matter where in the world he has traveled, a part of his heart remains tied to his childhood home, he

Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Helping the little guy Each day it is an ongoing struggle for a small business or startups to find their place in a complex and competitive world. This is especially true, when there are too many “giants” in the land of opportunity and from the world’s largest economy. It is so clear on all levels and sectors of our modern society, when all you can see are “giants” seemly “hogging” up all the space. We see them in health care, housing, insurance, retail shopping, grocery stores, legal services, education, manufacturing and transportation. They fill the ad space, media outlets and it appears that they are sucking all the “air” out and at the same time squeezing out the “little guy.” Sure these “giants” have the right to be there and to get what they believe is their fair share. In their defense, they can recite a long company history of providing a great service to customers, residents and the community. They would point out the number of meaningful jobs created, taxes paid, and contributions to special events, sponsoring countless youth activities and the like. No doubt, the impact and footprints of many so-called

“giants” are truly noteworthy. This is what they should do and be expected to do as a way to demonstrate their commitment and citizenship through active engagement. Since they made or are making their fortunes from the community and are located in that community, it is only right that they should continue to “invest” or “reinvest” in that community. What really is at issue here is that so many of the “giants,” find it quite difficult to share their success from a particular job or contract with many smaller vendors, companies and startups. Some top managers often do not see the overarching value of helping the small guy get a share of a major project. Some see these subcontractors as being in the way, a waste of time, lacking the capacity and will hold up the project. So many “giants” overlook the fact of what it takes to keep the “small guy” in business. It is not that they lack the capacity to help, but more or less, they lack the vision to see the needs and the role that the “small guy” plays in making the community stronger. On the other hand, some “giants” have awakened to

the reality that these “small players” are becoming essential to landing the next big public or private contract. This will be how business will be done in the future and collaboration will be the key. Even with a growing understanding of the place and need for small businesses in our modern society, there is still more work that needs to be done to support the “small guy” and to keep them in the mix. It does not take much for the “little guy” to exist; all they are asking for is a chance. Some businesses have been called "too big to fail,” but without some meaningful work the “little guy” is all but gone. What do you think? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, and Facebook. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd. President Obama to attend Pinckney’s funeral Friday in Charleston President Barack Obama will deliver the eulogy Friday at the Rev. Clementa Pinckney’s funeral, a White House official said. First lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden also will travel to Charleston to attend the services for the fallen Democrat, who also served as a state senator, the official confirmed Monday. Pinckney was one of nine people fatally shot Wednesday night during a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church. Sources say Obama also is expected to meet with the other victims’ families during his visit. Dylann Roof, 21, is charged with their murders and is being held at the Charleston County jail. Charleston police have classified the attack as a hate crime. Last week, Obama spoke about the killings, noting that he knew Pinckney and other Emanuel AME members personally. And he said the “senseless” murders

President Barack Obama were particularly heartbreaking because they occurred at a church where people seek solace. “The fact that this took place in a black church obviously also raises questions about a dark part of our history,” he said. “This is not the first time that black churches have been attacked. And we know that hatred across races and faiths pose a particular threat to our democracy and our ideals.” Pinckney’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at TD Arena at the College of Charleston. Interment will follow at St. James AME Church of Marion.

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

The greatest joys of fatherhood (Conclusion) This month has been dedicated to fatherhood. This week, Rev. Leondis Fuller is our father of the week. Rev. Fuller lost all three of his biological children to the senseless violence on our streets. This writer was moved by the openness, strength and love of this father’s submission and this writer is confident you will be moved too. Following Rev. Fuller’s reflections on fatherhood, this column will conclude by highlighting FUTURE, Inc. (“Fathers Uniquely Thriving To Understand Responsibility and Education”) which is a mission begun by Rev. Fuller after losing his biological sons in separate shootings. Reflections on Fatherhood By: Rev. Leondis Fuller I currently have 3 deceased children. All of them are males. In 1993 my 12 year old son, Monte Devon Fuller was shot and killed in a drive by shooting. In the year 2000 my 21 year old son Leondis Prince Fuller was shot 7 times and he died. Then, in 2002 my 27 year old son LaMar Grayson was shot 6

times and he died. I currently have a 38 year old step-son, Carl Lamont Fuller; and a 29 year old step- daughter, Tejuana Denene Wade. I have 6 grandchildren: Tatyanna Grayson, 20; Chasity Fuller, 18; LaMar Grayson, 16; Brooklyn Jones, age 11; Jerzi Jones, 7; and Bronze Harrison, 2. The greatest joy in fatherhood is being able to pass on positive values– values that my children can cherish, provide direction in their lives and pass on to all generations to come. My sons may not be able to capture this wonderful joy, but their children surely receive this gift from me. Rev. Fuller, committed to making a difference, has dedicated his life to ministering to fathers. He began FUTURE, Inc.; in 2001, a mission to offer supportive services to fathers 18 years of age and older to help them re-establish functional relationships with their biological children. FUTURE, Inc., addresses many of the underlying concerns that inhibit a young father's ability to carry out the responsibilities of parenthood. Ser-

vices include: job readiness/ training as well as assistance with employment placement, child support and alcohol/ drug abuse issues, to name a few. Research shows there is a connection between fathers and a child’s outcomes, including cognitive ability, educational achievement,

Fathers in the Healthy Development of Children, U.S. Children’s Bureau, 2006). If you are a father or know a father who wants to get involved in FUTURE, Inc., call Rev. Leondis Fuller at (414) 303-1903. Services are offered from 4:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. FUTURE, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and therefore, your tax deductible financial donations are always welcome. Thank you Rev. Fuller for making a difference in our community and for the work you are doing in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. On behalf of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper, its owners, management and staff, we celebrate all fathers everywhere who are working hard to be a good father to their children whether you are the stepfather, biological father or you have been blessed to be someone’s spiritual father.

'It Can Wait' simulator event at Milwaukee Boys & Girls Club highlights dangers of distracted driving

New research shows smartphone use has grown beyond texting; nearly 4 in 10 smartphone users tap into social media while driving

Teens at the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club in Milwaukee learned recently about the dangers of smartphone activities while driving and were encouraged to take the pledge to keep their eyes on the road, not on their phones. The event featured the AT&T It Can Wait simulator, which is visiting Milwaukee as part of a nationwide tour to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. AT&T is expanding the It Can Wait® campaign from a focus on texting while driving to include other smartphone distractions that have emerged as our relationships with our devices have changed. New research from AT&T shows that smartphone use has grown beyond texting, with 7 in 10 people engaging in smartphone activities while driving. Texting and emailing are still the most prevalent. But other smartphone activity use behind the wheel is now common, with 4 in 10 drivers tapping into social media. Among social platforms, Facebook tops the list, with more than a quarter of those polled using the app while driving. About 1 in 7

say they’re on Twitter behind the wheel. Almost 3 in 10 surf the net, and surprisingly, 1 in 10 video chat. “In today’s digital age, we know the temptation is high for our teens to have their eyes on their phones when they should be focused on driving,” said Denisha Tate, Chief Strategic Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. “But they need to know that not only is texting while driving illegal, it’s also extremely dangerous. We hope our teens take the It Can Wait message to heart.” “Not only is driving a privilege, it is also an obligation. We have an obligation to drive safely, for our sake and everyone else on the road,” said State Senator Nikiya Harris Dodd. “Smartphone activities like texting and emailing distract us and prevent us from being safe drivers. We are urging all of our drivers, especially our teens, to put their phones down and focus on the road.” According to new research by AT&T, smartphone activities people say they do while driving include: • Text (61 percent) • Email (33 percent)

• Surf the net (28 percent) • Facebook (27 percent) • Snap a selfie/ photo (17 percent) • Twitter (14 percent) • Instagram (14 percent) • Shoot a video (12 percent) • Snapchat (11 percent) • Video chat (10 percent) Other unsettling findings include: • 62 percent keep their smartphones within easy reach while driving. • 30 percent of people who post to Twitter while driving do it “all the time.” • 22 percent who access social networks while driving cite addiction as a reason. • Of those who shoot videos behind the wheel, 27 percent think they can do it safely while driving. AT&T will use the survey findings to help drive awareness of the dangers of smartphone use behind the wheel, and to encourage life-saving behavior change. It will collaborate with social platforms to share the message. For more information and to take the pledge to not text and drive at www.ItCanWait. com.

COMMUNITY COLUMN

UWM’s Transformational Impact By Mark A. Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee In this column I’ll share some thoughts about why the University of WisconsinMilwaukee (UWM) is absolutely vital to the future of this region and how it transforms the lives of our students. UWM is the ONLY public urban research university in the state. The access and engagement we provide is unique and life transforming for our students and community. This is critically important to our region’s current and future economic health, social welfare and ability to drive innovation and new economic activity. Wisconsin will have 100,000 new jobs to fill by 2023 because of retiring baby boomers and job growth.

More than 40 percent of those jobs will require a college degree. Just last month more than 3,300 individuals received a degree from UWM and are now beginning new chapters in their lives, whether in the Milwaukee workforce, in other countries doing research, or starting graduate school. Along the way, these individuals experienced many transformations. Here are just a few of their remarkable stories: Larry Davis grew up in the inner city of Milwaukee. A former foster child, Larry is now looking to help others in similar circumstances. He will use his new UWM social work degree at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, where he will help children through outreach programs. Psychology graduate Brittany Benitez had a terrible fear of flying. With the en-

Mark A. Mone Chancellor couragement of Outreach Program Manager Lora Taylor de Oliveira, Brittany took advantage of numerous undergraduate research opportunities and was able to conquer her fear and study abroad in Costa Rica. Brittany will attend graduate school with us in the fall. Recent Peck School of the Arts graduate Robert-Joquori Brown-Holland is an aspir-

ing music producer. BrownHolland found inspiration in his past struggles, channeling his creative energy into his music. “I started UWM with nothing to believe in, “ he says, “and ended with people believing in me.” Amber Rivard graduated with a degree in marketing but she says her life changed when she discovered salsa dancing. She’s taking with her not just her path to the business world, but also her new love of dance, something she says she wouldn’t have discovered if it wasn’t

for her time at UWM. These individuals are learning and thinking at greater levels than ever before. They are prepared for life’s opportunities and challenges and are confidently walking through open doors that they may not have known about before. That is the power of higher education. Options. Possibilities. Lifelong learning and personal growth. I encourage you to visit us, either in person or online at www.uwm.edu, to discover more about what your personal transformation can be.

Tight food budget can wreak havoc on diabetes management Study finds worse blood sugar control in those who worry about having enough to eat

People with type 2 diabetes who don’t always have enough money for food have worse blood sugar control than people who don’t worry about where their next meal will come from, new research finds. “We talk about healthy eating a lot in diabetes education, but we also need to talk about food accessibility. We need to ask, ‘Can you get these foods'?" said study author Britt Rotberg, assistant director of the Emory Diabetes Education Training Academy and the Emory Latino Diabetes Education Program in Atlanta. Rotberg presented the findings on Tuesday at the

American Diabetes Association meeting in Boston. Findings presented at meetings are generally viewed as preliminary until they’ve been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Worrying about having enough food -- dubbed “food insecurity” -- is an issue for about 14 percent of households in the United States. But there are significant differences in food insecurity by race. Almost 24 percent of Hispanic households face food insecurity, while 26 percent of black households don’t always have enough to eat, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). In

white households, that figure is 10 percent. There are also significant differences in the rate of type 2 diabetes by race. Approximately 8 percent of whites have it, compared to around 13 percent of Hispanics and blacks, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Previous research has found a 2.5 times higher risk

of diabetes in food-insecure households, the researchers said. The current study included people with type 2 diabetes participating in the Emory Latino Diabetes Education Program. This program is designed to provide education and support to help improve blood sugar management. Two-thirds of the study participants don’t have health insurance. And 76 percent have household incomes below $15,000 a year, according to the study. The researchers asked whether or not people had been worried about having enough food to eat in the last 30 days. Those who had were

identified as food insecure. There were 137 food insecure people, and 167 people who were food secure, the researchers said. Blood sugar levels were significantly better in people with food security. The A1C level in people who were food secure averaged 7.6 percent. In those who were food insecure, the A1C average was almost 10 percent. A1C is a blood test that estimates blood sugar levels over the past three months or so. In general, the goal for people with diabetes is to have an A1C of lower than 7 percent, according to the ADA.

Widespread vaccination fights serious stomach infection in kids The widespread use of a vaccine against a germ that causes gastrointestinal infections in infants and young children has been a resounding success in the United States, a new study suggests. A team led by Dr. Eyal Leshem of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a big drop in the number of young children hospitalized with gastroenteritis since routine immunization against rotavirus was launched in 2006. “Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe acute gastroenteritis -- vomiting and severe diarrhea -among children across the world,” said one expert, Dr. Roya Samuels, a pediatrician at Cohen Children’s Hospital of New York in New Hyde Park. But two vaccines -- Rotateq and Rotatrix -- can pre-

vent up to 87 percent of all rotavirus illnesses occurring during a baby’s first year, said Samuels, who was not involved in the new study. In the new research, Leshem’s team tracked data from 26 states. They found a steep decline between 2008 and 2012 for hospitalizations for gastroenteritis among children younger than 5 years of age. Before rotavirus vaccination was implemented, 76 out of every 10,000 children under 5 was hospitalized for gastroenteritis from any cause, the researchers noted. However, after widespread vaccination began, that rate declined by 31 percent in 2008, by 33 percent in 2009, by 48 percent in 2010, and by 55 percent in 2012. There were similar rate declines among girls and boys, across all racial/ethnic

groups, and in all age groups, the CDC team said. The largest decreases occurred among children ages 6 months to 23 months, according to the study published June 9 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Before rotavirus vaccination began, the rate of hospitalization gastroenteritis directly linked to rotavirus

among children younger than 5 years was 16 cases per 10,000 children. However, after vaccination began, rates fell by 70 percent in 2008, 63 percent in 2009, 90 percent in 2010 and 94 percent in 2012. The authors say that individual babies are protected by the vaccine, of course, but “herd immunity” is probably playing a big role as well.

Herd immunity occurs when a child’s chance of coming into contact with a germ drops because so many other people are also immune to the bug, and are therefore not passing it on. “The vaccine has truly been amazing if you look at the numbers,” said another expert, Dr. Tuvia Marciano. He directs pediatric endoscopy at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. “There was data published previously on the effect of the vaccine,” Marciano said, “and we know it drastically reduced admissions for kids sick with rotavirus and for kids sick with gastroenteritis.” That’s great news, he added, since “gastroenteritis and dehydration makes up a large percentage of [pediatric] hospital admissions.”

Ways to save money on a last-minute summer trip If you, your partner or your family want – or need – to get out of town right now, how do you improvise a great last-minute trip without breaking the bank? Planning is essential. Embrace travel as a hobby – look for tricks, techniques and current online resources to keep abreast of the best last-minute deals. Compromises will be necessary. You'll likely need to travel at off-peak hours (either the first flight out in the morning or the last one at night, usually on weekdays) and stay at hotels or venues off the beaten path. Here are some quick tips to save money on last-minute travel: • Travel light, move fast. Traveling last-minute isn't for the indecisive. Dedicated travelers are minimalists – they know what to pack, organize their paperwork and payment options and have the mental preparation to deal with problems and challenges along the way. Also realize that last-minute travel can increase risk and other costs. If you're planning a trip that requires travel insurance, (https://www.insuremytrip.com/learn/travel-in-

surance-basics/when-to-buy. html) you may not get coverage approval in time. • Build the right online resources. The Internet has revolutionized most forms of purchasing goods and services, but for travel, it has offered unprecedented speed and customization. Use top travel sites that have a tested track record and broad listings of various travel products, but be on the lookout for new travel websites and apps launch every day. Some airlines now offer their own last-minute fare sites, but try to sign up for email alerts and social media feeds from a variety of travel resources so you won't miss a deals on air, hotel or ground transportation. Also, layovers are good to build into your itinerary as long as you don't have to pay for a hotel and take a moment to compare the price of two one-way tickets – possibly from competing carriers – against round-trip tickets at single carriers. You might save. • Test new lodging options. The new generation of apartment and spare-bedroom sharing sites and longtime online vacation home rental services offer last-min-

ute and in some cases "dayof" lodging possibilities, but keep in mind that online scammers (http://www. practicalmoneyskills.com/ rentalscams) have entered this territory and all transactions should be verified independently. Staying in hostels is not just for students and backpackers anymore; there are hostels that aim for older travelers as well. Getting on the phone also works in the hotel industry – check online prices against what you can find by calling up the hotel's booking number and ask if there is a lower corporate rate or special for the period of your stay. • Compare ride-share with car rental. If you think you're going to need to drive at your destination, check car-rental rates against leading ride-share companies

• Finally, evaluate every membership connection you have. Start by looking at all the plastic you have in your wallet. From your credit cards to the membership card for your main professional networking group and even to the auto club that tows your car, can you take advantage of any travel benefits you can leverage on a last-minute trip? Take some time to review those benefits – or look at them for the first time. Bottom line: Last-minute travel is almost always possible as long as you're willing to do a little homework and improvise.
