Gov. Walker announces winner of Read to Lead Development Grant Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is pictured here in the library of the Central City Cyberschool shaking hands with students after making remarks announcing the school was the recipient of a Read to Lead Development Grant of $40,516. Gov. Walker said the grant “sends a signal that reading is important, which will make teachers even better teachers.” The Central City Cyberschool is an independent public charter school of Milwaukee, which was chartered by the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee in 1999. The school currently has an enrollment of 420 students comprised of four-year-old kindergarten through the eighth grade. The student body comes from the Parklawn neighborhood, which reflects the character of the community. Not a single child is bused. The vision of the school is to bring technology and a learning environment to a community where few residents have access to technology. Gov. Walker is pictured here shaking hands with students of the school, including (from left) Iriayana Smith, Gordan Smith, Victorion Brooks and Gary Merriett, Jr.

Poet, activist and author, Maya Angelou passes at age 86 Poet, performer and political activist Maya Angelou died on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 after a long illness at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was 86. Born in St. Louis in 1928, Angelou grew up in a segregated society that she worked to change during the civil rights era. Angelou, who refused to speak for much of her childhood, revealed the scars of her past in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first of a series of memoirs. Growing up in St. Louis, MO, and Stamps, AK, she was Marguerite Johnson. It was her brother who first called her Maya, and the name stuck. Later she added the Angelou, a version of her first husband's name. Angelou left a troubled childhood and the segregated world of Arkansas behind and began a career as a dancer and singer. She toured Europe in the1950s with a production of Porgy and Bess, studied dance with Martha Graham and performed with Alvin Ailey on television. In 1957 she recorded an album called "Calypso Lady." "I was known as Miss Calypso, and when I'd forget the lyric, I would tell the audience, 'I seem to have forgotten the lyric. Now I will dance.' And I would move around a bit," she recalled with a laugh during a 2008 interview with NPR. "She really believed that life was a banquet," says Patrik Henry Bass, an editor at Essence Magazine. When he read Angelou's memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, he saw parallels in his own life in a small town in North Carolina. He says everyone in the African American community looked up to her; she was a celebrity but she was one of them. He remembers seeing her on television and hearing her speak. "When we think of her, we often think about her books, of course, and her poems," he says. "But in the African American community, certainly, we heard so much of her work recited, so I think about her voice. You would hear that voice, and that voice would capture a humanity, and that voice would calm you in so many ways through some of the most significant challenges." Film director John Singleton grew up in a very different part of the country. But he remembers the effect Angelou's poem "Still I Rise" had on him as a kid. It begins: You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. "I come from South Central Los Angeles," he says.
Maya Angelou It's "a place where we learn to puff up our chests to make ourselves bigger than we are because we have so many forces knocking us down — including some of our own. And so that poem ... it pumps me up, you know. ... It makes me feel better about myself, or at least made me feel better about myself when I was young." Singleton used Angelou's poems in his 1993 film Poetic Justice. Angelou also had a small part in the movie. Singleton says he thinks of (Continued on pg. 4)

Being Frank It has been said that one of the definitions of insanity is to keep doing the same thing but expect different results. There is outrage in the Milwaukee African American community because a young girl was shot. African Americans are looking for answers and a solution for the violence in their neighborhoods. ways had a penchant to look everywhere else for answers but the mirror and this is insane. Sierra Guyton was shot while playing across the street from her house on a playground. One of the suspects is supposedly a convicted killer from years back. Many will scream why was this killer on the streets, much less
with a gun. In America once a person has served their time they walk free. In some cases the perpetrator walks free to commit more crime. What will African Americans do to prevent this from ever happening again? Many pastors in the inner city have spoken out about the violence that rages throughout Milwaukee. Rev-
erend Gregory Lewis made statements informing people to not expect the police to control their families. This is the type of rhetoric African Americans need to hear. One reason African Americans can be labeled as insane is the inept belief that someone else can help them. This foolish concept that the police or justice system is going to solve African American problems is the main cause of the dysfunction in the community. African Americans have to acknowledge that they have a deep-seated hatred for themselves and each other. No amount of police or Army will stop African Americans from killing each other. Just look at the prison system. Under lock and key blacks still commit crimes against one another. Do African Americans need police in their houses standing over them in their bedrooms? If this is the solution then what good are African Americans to themselves, much less society? You often hear people ask, “How can this be happening?” Easily, when you look at the culture African Americans have adopted. The glorification of the thug/ harlot image in African American society is past foolish. The music that many African Americans listen to screams self-hatred. No other race listens to music that constantly demeans their women and glorifies crime the way African Americans do. Why then is it a shock when they kill each other at will? African Americans are faced with a reality that many will find painful. The next generation of African Americans may be useless. For many decades African Americans have put off dealing with issues in society hoping things would get better for the next generation. This pie in the sky mentality is why things haven’t gotten better for the African American in the USA. What changes does anyone expect from the current generation of African American children? Many of these children don’t even realize there is a problem in society. To be honest the African American situation has gotten worse in the USA. Outside of dominating sports and spending money, what have African Americans done to propel the race forward? There are many rich African Americans but most made their money in ways that can be tied to exploitation. Sports, music and entertainment have created the miserable culture the African American has adopted. (Continued on pg. 4)

Maya Angelou passes (Continued from pg. 2) Angelou as a griot — a traditional African storyteller. "We all have that one or two people in our families that just can spin a yarn, that has a whole lot to say, and holds a lot of wisdom from walking through the world and experiencing different things," he says. "And that's the way I see Dr. Maya Angelou. She was a contemporary of Martin Luther King, a contemporary of Malcolm X and Oprah Winfrey. She transcends so many different generations of African American culture that have affected all of us." Joanne Braxton, a professor at the College of William and Mary, says Angelou's willingness to reveal the sexual abuse she suffered as a child in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was unprecedented at the time. The critical acclaim and popularity of the book opened doors for both African American and female writers. "Maya Angelou brought about a paradigm shift in American literature and culture," Braxton says, "so that

the works, the gifts, the talents of women writers, including women writers of color, could be brought to the foreground and appreciated. She created an audience by her stunning example." For Braxton, the world will never be quite the same without Angelou. "I love her," she says. "She's beloved by many, including many, many people who have never met her in person, and who will never meet her in person — but she has extended herself that way, so that her touch extends beyond her physical embrace. That is truly a gift, and we are truly blessed to have known her through her presence and her work." Rebuilding our Community By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. The front lines
There continues to be a lot of talk about what to do about the senseless violence that continues to occur in every large city in America. Each day there is an act of violence that makes no sense at all. And nearly every week we hear the same conversations regardless of who is talking-- an elected official, community leader, business owner or local resident - - about stopping the violence. If fact, we have all heard the messages … the same spill… seen the same press conferences, participated in the rallies, walks and prayer vigils... however and at the end of the day… we continue to hear and witness more shootings and deaths. In far too many cases our responses continue to be the same...is it because we do not know of any other responses to give? Perhaps we feel just as helpless as others and we need to participate in things to help us cope and to deal with our own emotional pain. Perhaps it helps us to feel good about ourselves… to be with others and supporting those families that are dealing with grief and loss, or because we too have experienced the same reality. Or could it be that it is a way

of saying something to be heard and to be seen doing something that shines a spotlight on the situation? No doubt about it … there is a lot at stake… there is a lot riding on reducing the violence in our city. It makes economic sense, it makes political sense, it makes com-
munity sense and it makes common sense. Of course we know that deep down inside, the solutions to the problems of our community are more complex than they appear. It’s more than about jobs, it's more than about economic mobility; it’s more than about political opportunity…it is about humanity, wealth of a great nation and its people. The question, then is who is listening… are we just preaching to the choir? … And do we really care about what is happening? Perhaps we are looking at the wrong end of things and
not fully understanding the meaning of what is occurring and what can be done to turn things around. It is amazing that you hear requests to be on the “front lines” and help get the word out on stopping the violence… participate in this community forum… a rally for that… a walk in this neighborhood… so on and so forth. But rarely do you hear requests about joining in on the other front lines of our community; i.e., planning, employment, housing, economic development, health care, commissions… you get the picture. Do ask me to take a look at the picture that has already been sketched and painted… allow me the opportunity to draw and paint the picture for myself. The outcomes could be totally different. Do we really understand what the front lines are about? Or do we know where the front lines are? Lifestyle evangelism: A living faith (Week 1) “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only…” - James 1:22 (ESV) This month we will begin a new series concentrating on evangelism. Evangelism is the urgent task of the church of which each of us has the responsibility of making Christ known in the world. Even with this responsibility upon us, many believers today feel that Gospel tract, sidewalk evangelism, street preachers with bullhorns seems like evangelistic efforts of yesteryear. If that is true, where does that leave the state of evangelism today? Is our faith sharing a fading practice, or does it simply look different in the 21st Century? Or has all of the innovative efforts to engage today’s culture have believers left with this ancient practice so integral to their faith behind? The Gaudium et Spes, the Pastoral Constitution on the
Church in the Modern World, which was an overview of the Catholic Church’s teachings about humanity’s relationship to society, promulgated by Pope Paul VI on December 7, 1965 addressed this issue. It stated in part: “There cannot be a split between your faith and your work; the mentality that you check your faith at the door is among the serious errors of our age… Far too long we have accommodated everyone but neglected our own beliefs. You are messengers of the Gospel; therefore, you are called to know the Gospel and to live the Gospel in your daily lives.” In other words, when it comes to evangelism, there cannot be a dividing line between theory and practice. When evangelism is actively practiced and is not merely theoretical, then believers will enthusiastically share the Good News of Jesus by becoming committed to telling others about Jesus. Most of
us have taken comfort in the famous quote of St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” But we also need to understand the right balance. In an era of blurred spiritual distinctions, words are not only necessary, but the believer must share their faith through their lifestyle. The church exists for Christian evangelism and discipleship. We are to “go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19a). As disciples, when we share the Good News, that allows Jesus’ ministry to be continued on earth through us. However, the personal responsibility of each disciple has been usurped by a ministry model of corporate
evangelism that is based in training and strategy. Two of the more popular models of evangelism are: Evangelism Explosion (EE) and Faith Evangelism. Evangelism Explosion was developed in 1962 by the late Dr. D. James Kennedy. EE trains people to share their faith and know how to bring people of unbelief to belief. Faith Evangelism trains participants to share their faith. This model is also based on training specialists in teams to canvass neighborhoods and ask key questions of salvation in one-on-one confrontation. While these models have their success stories, there are some weaknesses in them; they are based on a volunteer system of participation and encourage evangelism as an avocation and not a lifestyle. Secondly, these models encourage the church to see evangelism as an avocation,
rather than the responsibility of every believer. Nevertheless, the biblical mandate (Matthew 28:19-20) is upon every disciple and that is to make disciples. The mandate cannot be delegated to a team of trained volunteers in the rhetoric of evangelism. Jesus is clear; each of us has a responsibility of sharing the Gospel in the natural context of daily living. (See John 13:34-35). It is from this perspective that I believe that we are to teach and practice lifestyle evangelism. What’s Happening?
Raising awareness about the threat of lupus
The Milwaukee Urban League Guild and the Wisconsin chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America teamed up on Saturday, May 24, 2014, to present a Day of Awareness. During that day, community volunteers set up an information booth inside Lena’s Food Market at Capitol Drive and N. Teutonia Avenue, to pass out literature and reach out to shoppers to educate them about this chronic condition. Lupus is an autoimmune disease which is more common and more severe among women, and for which there is no known cure. It causes inflammation that can damage major organs, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, skin and brain. Symptoms and effects of the disease can be controlled with medication and lifestyle management; and lupus sufferers can experience periods of disease flare-up and remission. Among the community volunteers who participated in the Lupus Day of Awareness were (standing from left) event coordinator and lupus survivor Linda Presberry, Johnny Miller, Milwaukee Urban League CEO Ralph Hollmon; (seated from left) Urban League Guild President Michelle Crockett, Cynthia Stokes-Murray, and Amy Hall. On Saturday, June 7, 2014 the Lupus Foundation will host their annual Lupus Walk on the Mt. Mary University campus in Wauwatosa. In addition to the one- and threemile walks, there will be food and fun activities for all attendees. For more information and event times, go to www.firstg iv i n g. c o m / lupuswi and click on Walk to End Lupus Now.

Health & Fitness
Talking Health with Dr. Carter
By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store
Radiation vs. Nutrition (part 3) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Antioxidant enzymes to the rescue Our most important defense against radiation is the body’s antioxidant enzyme system. Enzymes are catalysts. Made up of proteins (which are made up of amino acids), enzymes allow the cell to carry out chemical reactions very quickly, building things up and breaking them down as needed. (Ditto, digestive enzymes.) Among other jobs, they run our metabolism (makes energy).
This means that antioxidant enzymes work much faster than nonenzymatic antioxidants. Hence, catalase, which forms using sulfur, works more quickly than vitamin C which is also life-sustaining, works into some enzyme systems, but is not an enzyme. (All enzymes have the suffix -ase.) Here is a list of the antioxidant enzymes produced by the body and the nutrients needed to sustain them. • S.O.D., superoxide dismutase, is a group of three enzymes, which differ by the mineral informing their function. They are zinc-, copper-, and manganese- dependent. S.O.D. plays a huge role by quenching the superoxide free radical, considered the most lethal oxygen radical. Our body increases the amount of this enzyme
when there are plenty of minerals, veggies, and vitamin C. CoQ10 helps make up for deficits. • Catalase, next in importance, can increase quickly when needed. To support catalase quantities, Apsley recommends high quality whey protein to supply sulfur-containing cystine and cysteine. Some algae are also recommended.
• Glutathione is named “The Mother of All Antioxidants” by Mark Hyman, MD, who says it is the most important molecule we need to stay healthy and prevent disease. He notes that it is a champion radiation fighter. Apsley remarks that the body is slow to build glutathione (gloo-ta-thigh’own). The solution is to keep our reserves up. N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), glycine, glutamine, selenium, and melatonin all support glutathione production. Again, CoQ10 may compensate for deficits. • Methionine Reductase is essential to quench the hydroxyl radical, another dangerous free radical. It requires selenium as well as methionine, folic acid, and vitamin B12. • Thioredoxin regenerates the antioxidant systems
and is known to prevent free radical damage to the heart. It works with glutathione and is essential to protect our genetic code and nervous system. In addition, this antioxidant system is fat soluble, restoring and protecting the cell membrane. Thioredoxin levels are maintained by the sulfur-containing foods and supplements listed above as well as by curcumin, the active ingredient in the golden spice turmeric. . Smoking more likely among teens whose parents light up Quitting early in child’s life helps reduce risk, researchers say
Teen children of heavy smokers are more likely to try cigarettes and to become heavy smokers themselves, a new study suggests. The researchers found that the more years a child was exposed to parental smoking, the greater the risk the child would experiment with smoking or even pick up the unhealthy habit. These findings suggest that parents who smoke should quit smoking as early as possible in their children’s lives to reduce the chances that their children will take up smoking when they’re older,
"I'm grateful to intelligent people. That doesn't mean educated. That doesn't mean intellectual. I mean really intelligent. What black old people used to call 'mother wit' means intelligence that you had in your mother's womb. That's what you rely on. You know what's right to do." - Maya Angelou
the researchers said. “It is difficult to dissuade children from smoking if one or both parents are heavily dependent on cigarettes,” lead investigator Darren Mays, an assistant professor of oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center, said in a center news release. “It is also important for parents who smoke to know that their children may model the behavior, particularly if a parent is nicotine-dependent,” he added. The study included more than 400 New England parents and their 12- to 17-year-
old children. Over five years of follow-up, the children of heavy smokers were more likely to have tried cigarettes or to have become smokers, according to the study published online May 12 in the journal Pediatrics. “We believe social learning plays an important role in intergenerational smoking,” Mays said. “If social learning is key, then children can also learn from a parent who smokes that it is possible -and wise -- to quit.”
