Jason Derulo (top left photo), Otis Taylor (top center photo), Morris Day and the Time ( top right photo); The Roots (bottom left photo); and the Wailers (bottom right photo) are just some of more than 800 acts that are scheduled to perform at Summerfest 2016 from June 29 to July 10, 2016. With near perfect weather and a long holiday weekend, attendance is expected to be up from last year's; attendance in 2015 was down due to a Milwaukee County bus strike that was in effect.

'Dinner in the Alley,' an alternative to the gala, attracts dozens to benefit Salvation Army In one of the more unusual fundraising events of the summer, 75 young professionals recently had dinner in an alley in downtown Milwaukee to raise money to support the homeless initiative of The Salvation Army Milwaukee County. The sold-out dinner was held on Friday, June 24, 2016 in the alley next to the Grain Exchange, 225 E. Michigan St., and featured a long table where all the guests sat for the event. Most of the participants dressed in red for the occasion. The event was put together by the Salvation Army's Echelon board, which is made up of 40 Milwaukee-area young professionals working on behalf of the agency. "The board of the Salvation Army asked Echelon to host a gala as a way to engage YP's and host a fundraiser," said Ian Abston, a member of the Echelon board. "The collective group is bored with galas and challenged ourselves to do something unique, fun, and intriguing to the millennial generation ... thus the Dinner in the Alley was born." The event raised $3,500 for the Salvation Army and was sponsored by Thrivent Financial. Two additional "Dinner in the Alley" events are planned in July and September. Pictured guests dined on a seasonal menu in the alley next to the Grain Exchange (top photo); Salvation Army Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Divisional Commanders Dan Jennings (lower left photo, back) and Dorene Jennings (lower left photo, front) co-founded the Echelon board; and Echelon board members (lower right photo, from left) Paul Royal and Terrell Lynn Morgan. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

has announced the winners of the 15th Annual Women Worth Watching Awards®, naming Kimberley Goode, vice president of communications and corporate affairs for Northwestern Mutual, as a 2016 recipient. The award honorees were nominated by their colleagues, peers and mentors, and chosen for their purpose and commitment to diversity, both professionally and within their communities. This year’s honorees join the list of past recipients who have gone on to lead Fortune 500 companies as leaders, executives and CEOs; while others have grown and driven new businesses, markets and ventures while actively developing the next generation of women leaders. “Collectively, these women are forging ahead with global acclaim in strategies that are making a difference in their workplace, marketplace and around the world,” said James Rector, publisher of Profiles in Diversity Journal. “These leaders bring an array of life experiences and views that consistently produce a variety of new concepts and ideas.” The winners will be featured in an upcoming Women Worth Watching edition of Profiles in Diversity Journal, available to the public in September. "We are so proud of Kimberley for this honor and for her accomplishments in inspiring, connecting and empowering others,” said Jo Eisenhart, senior vice president of human resources for Northwestern Mutual. “She is a key driver for positive change and makes a powerful impact on how we do business and build our community. Hills/Copper Lake was that of staff battering each other! “Oversight” is the regular monitoring and investigation, when needed, of prison conditions. But the monitoring/ oversight mechanism cannot be an entity that serves at the pleasure of, or is selected by, a department of corrections. It cannot be a guild or a community relations board. Instead, oversight should be understood as a tool that is designed to aid in the effort to professionalize the field of corrections. Community boards with an oversight

function help to guarantee that prisoners are treated with dignity and respect. This, in turn, helps to professionalize the behavior of staff. Data also indicate that the presence of an independent community board helps to reduce ex-offender recidivism. Statutorily-set oversight authority is common in England. Perhaps it is time to consider the practice here. These boards, however, have been found to work better in metropolitan areas versus rural areas. R.L. McNeely, Chair Felmers O. Good 'Trouble' inside and outside Congress "For months, even for years, through several sessions of Congress, I wondered what will bring this body to take action. What will finally make Congress do what is right, what is just, what the people of this country have been demanding, and what is long overdue?" - Congressman John Lewis Congressman John Lewis’ call to action in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 22, 2016 was the beginning of an extraordinary event in our nation’s Capitol. Members of Congress participated in a nonviolent occupation of the floor of the House of Representatives led by a veteran civil rights organizer and participant in the sit-in movement to desegregate Jim Crow lunch counters, Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate travel, and marches to protest the denial of the right to vote to Black citizens across the South. How refreshing to see John Lewis and his Congressional colleagues protesting the egregious fact that even in the wake of the deadliest

brothers. Daughters and sons. Friends and neighbors. “And what has this body done, Mr. Speaker? NOTHING. Not one thing. We have turned deaf ears to the blood of the innocent and the concerns of our nation. We are blind to a crisis. Mr. Speaker, where is the heart of this body? Where is our soul? Where is our moral leadership? Where is our courage?” Congressman John Lewis grew up in segregated Troy, Alabama where he was taught not to challenge the racist Jim Crow status quo because that was just the way things were. But as a teenager he decided he couldn’t and wouldn’t spend his life afraid of getting into “good trouble.” He wrote a letter to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. after hearing him on the radio during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dr. King invited the “boy from Troy” to come meet him and helped spur young John Lewis on his lifelong path as a nonviolent warrior for justice who helped transform our nation. As a student leader and eventually chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) he helped organize and supported sit-ins and other student activism across the South with my generation of young activists. At age 23 he was the youngest person to speak at the 1963 March on Washington. Two years later he was brutally attacked by lawless state and local law enforcement officials and his skull was fractured on the Edmund Pettus Bridge while attempting to lead a march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama. The televised images of the savage “Bloody Sunday” beatings followed by the March from Selma to Montgomery by people coming from across the nation led President Lyndon B. Johnson to call on Congress to pass what became the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement

and in America’s continuing struggle to honor America’s dream. How sad that so many states, especially in the South, are attempting to undermine this sacred right of citizenship to vote — in every possible way today. In 1986 John Lewis was elected to Congress to continue fighting to push America forward. He electrified the nation as he brought the same nonviolent civil disobedience tactics he used as a young civil rights leader to the House floor and led his colleagues in the sit-in condemning Congress’ inaction to reduce mass shootings and gun violence. His address to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan displayed a moral leadership and clarity that I hope will infect enough of his Congressional colleagues and galvanize millions of voters appalled by Congress’s inability to ban gun sales to people on the “no-fly” list, expand background checks, or provide other urgently needed common sense safety solutions to protect Americans including our children from relentless gun violence. “We were elected to lead, Mr. Speaker. We must be headlights, and not taillights. We cannot continue to stick our heads in the sand and ignore the reality of mass gun violence in our nation. Deadly mass shootings are becoming more and more frequent. Mr. Speaker, this is a fact. It is not an opinion. We must remove the blinders. The time for silence and patience is long gone.” The time for silence and patience is long gone. Congressmen Lewis and his colleagues have vowed to keep going with their fight as soon as the House returns from its July 4th recess. We must stand with them as they continue to get into “good trouble.” We desperately need a critical mass of leaders like Congressman Lewis, Senator Christopher Murphy, and others who joined in the House sit-in willing to be headlights and stand up to the National Rifle Association and the gun manufacturing industry and their lobbyists and money and do the right thing to prevent gun violence that injures or kills a child every half hour in our gun saturated nation. Congressman Lewis has said that some of the martyrs of the civil rights movement were “the founding fathers of the new America, a new way of doing things, a new way of life.” On this Fourth of July holiday honoring another revolutionary moment of “good trouble,” it’s time to remember how acts of civil

disobedience have shaped our country and made us better throughout our history — from the Boston Tea Party, when citizens in Massachusetts illegally boarded a British ship and threw its cargo of tea into the Boston Harbor rather than pay taxes without representation, and other acts that led to the Declaration of Independence; to the Underground Railroad, with its fearless conductors like Harriet Tubman and abolitionist friends including the Quakers who helped lead to the abolition of slavery; to the women’s suffrage movement, when thousands of courageous women marched and endured arrest and jail to win the right to vote; to the civil rights movement with Charles Houston’s and Thurgood Marshall’s legal challenges to segregation and unequal public schools, bus boycotts, sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and marches which led to the right to vote — gains that are slipping backwards; to the fight for LGBT equality and acknowledgement that love is love — and many more. We must encourage and support a new group of American leaders — nonviolent servant leaders — to sit in and stand up and do whatever it takes to protect and build on the progress made, resist the backwards slide in our regressive Congress, reject people spouting hate and intolerance at any group, and support the will of the majority of Americans, including a majority of gun owners, who want Congress to do their job and pass common sense safety measures to stem the deeply destructive tide of gun violence in our nation. Gun violence should no longer be tolerated and accepted as a uniquely all-American value. As John Lewis said from the House floor: “Sometimes you have to do something out of the ordinary. Sometimes you have to make a way out of no way. We have been too quiet for too long. There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise. When you have to move your feet. And this is the time.” Amen! Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Community violence and its impact on our children (Part I) On June 12, 2016, 50 people were killed in a mass shooting in Orlando, Florida when a gunman opened fire in a packed gay nightclub, injuring 53. This is the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in recent U.S. history and the deadliest incident of violence against the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender) community in the United States. The gunman was shot dead by police. On June 11, 2016 a Roswell, New Mexico man is suspected of killing his wife and four daughters, ages 3, 7, 11 and 14, in an apparent domestic dispute that turned deadly. On June 5, 2016, 3 people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting spree in Cape Coral, Florida. On June 1, 2016, 2 people died in a shooting at the University of California campus in Los Angeles (UCLA) which prompted the lock down for tens of thousands of students. It is believed the shooter was among those killed. On April 22, 2016, 8 Ohio family members were killed execution-style in four sep-

arate homes in a rural Ohio community. Three children survived the ordeal, including a 4-day-old sleeping next to its slain mother, along with a 3-year-old and a sixmonth-old. So far in 2016, there have been 56 deaths in Milwaukee; 49 of these crimes meet the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting criteria for homicides. The shootings are becoming so regular in America that only the mass shootings like those that occurred in Orlando, California and Ohio get any national attention. Last October, after shootings at the Oregon Community College, President Obama

bewailed that mass killings have become “routine” in the United States: “I hope and pray that I don’t have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my condolences to families in these circumstances. But based on my experience as president, I can’t guarantee that,” President Obama said. Little did the President know, nearly eight months later he would be holding another news conference concerning the Orlando massacre indicating: “This was an act of terror and an act of hate.” At the time of the submission of these articles in late June 2016, The Gun Violence

Archive (“GVA”) reported that in America in 2016 there have been a total of 24,232 incidents in which guns were involved. Of those incidents 6,227 persons died; 12,731 were injured; a total of 262 children were injured and/ or killed between the ages of 0-11; 1,334 teens between the ages of 12-17 were either injured or killed, and there were 145 mass shootings. These incidents of violence are recorded in every corner of the country. Because public opinion polls show that Americans are concerned about violence in general and dramatically under or misinformed about its specific consequences; and in light of the recent documentary on Milwaukee’s 53206 zip code in which it was noted the homicide rate in 53206 is 250 per 100,000 and has the highest incarceration rate in the country; this month this column will address this disturbing topic. In cooperation with the Milwaukee Community Journal, an abbreviated version of this series will be published in this writer’s column: “Biblical Counseling for Today’s

Beloved, when violence strikes a community, it’s paralyzing; but it is at this time the faith community must turn to God. A community’s greatest need is Jesus the Christ. As we seek to serve the Christ even in the midst of violence, may we continue to pray and show the love of Christ. For we know that God demonstrates His own love for us, in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Remembering Those We Have Lost in 2016! You are not forgotten loved one, nor will you ever be. As long as life and memory last, we will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore; as time goes by we miss you more. Your loving smile, your gentle face—no one can fill your vacant place.

What is it about me that makes people feel better without me, especially when you do you and I do me? No doubt if you knew me you would come and see about me, to see the happy times with me. And if it’s a front, if that’s the case, why do people gather around to a blunt when I’m around? I mean, if I stunt, I stunt, but the outside is what people realize and the inside is where I come from nowadays. I wear my heart on my sleeve to see if I can achieve the lesser of me to see 100 degrees, only then will I parish off the face of the earth and you will see that life ain’t worth living without me. - By Terrence T. Shields

What must it be to step on shore, and find it—Heaven To take hold of a hand, and find it—God’s hand To breathe a new air, and find it—Celestial air To feel invigorated, and find it—Immortality To rise from the care, the loneliness, and turmoil of earth Into one unbroken calm To wake up and find it—Glory!

He was a wood-worker living in a small town in the Middle East under the Roman Empire. His public career was confined to the last few years of His short life and was apparently unsuccessful. He went about healing and helping, teaching and preaching. In His love for men He literally gave Himself away in the service of others. At the same time He experienced hunger, homelessness and tiredness. He knew what sorrow was like in the death of His friends and loneliness when deserted by others. Living in an occupied country in an age of cruelty, He faced strong opposition; yet He would not waver or evade the final issue. He enjoyed the company of others and befriended the outcasts, the unwanted, and the social misfits. In His care and concern for these He knew no limits. Strong in character and will, He was yet gentle to the weak and helpless. But wherever He found evil or hypocrisy He fearlessly condemned it. Then, because of His love for ordinary men and women - He died for them...but that was not the end - He rose again and lives today! There has to be something about that name - that name JESUS! Any followers ???

Proverbs 31:10-31 (KJV) Who can find a virtuous woman? her price isof far above rubies. Honoring theForSpirit The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. October 1933and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. She maketh fi22, ne linen, Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. May 27, She looketh well2016 to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

What Black parents must do this summer By: Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu Author of “There is Nothing Wrong With Black Students, Changing School Culture For Black Males, Raising Black Boys And Raising Black Girls” There is a 3-year achievement gap between Black and White students. Many people love to believe it’s due to income, fatherlessness, educational attainment of the parent and lack of parental involvement. I believe a major reason for the gap is we continue to close schools for the summer as if we are an agrarian economy. Very few Black youth will be farming this summer. If you multiply 3 months by 12 years you will see the 3 year gap. There is nothing wrong with Black youth if their schools remained open during the summer and/or their parents kept them academically en-

gaged. Middle-income parents who value education enroll their children in some type of academic experience during the summer. They also visit libraries, museums, zoos and colleges. Other parents allow their children to sleep longer, play more video games, watch more television and play basketball until they can’t see the hoop. These students will have to review

the same work they had mastered in May in September. Black parents cannot allow their child to lose 3 months every year. Black parents cannot say they cannot afford the library. It’s free! Most museums have discounted days. A male friend of mine shared his experience with me when he took his family to the museum. He wondered why so many people were staring at him. His wife

and children had to tell him he was the only Black man in the building! I am appealing to every father to take his children this summer to the library, museum, and the zoo. I am appealing to every mother if he won’t, you will. We need every parent to make sure their child reads at least one book per week and to write a book report. I am reminded of the formula Sonya Carson used to develop Ben Carson to become the best pediatric neurosurgeon. This low-income single parent, with a third grade education, had enough sense to tell her sons to turn off the television, read a book and write a report that her sister would grade! I have a theory that I can go into your house and within 5 minutes tell you the type of student who lives there and predict their future. I

believe that engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants etc. need different items in their house than ballplayers, rappers, and criminals. I am very concerned when I visit a house that has more CD’s and downloads than books. My company, African American Images, has designed a special collection of books for boys. Research shows one of the major reasons boys dislike reading is because of the content. The set is titled Best Books for Boys. We also have one for girls, parents and teachers. Enjoy your summer. Let’s close the gap. I look forward to your child’s teacher asking your child what did you do for the summer? And your child answering we went to the library, museum, zoo, colleges and other great educational places.

What Black women should understand about heart disease By Elizabeth Overstreet Heart disease has always existed in my family. My grandfather, whom I adored and loved deeply, was a sufferer of heart disease toward the latter part of his life. In his 70’s, with less than a 30 percent chance of survival, he had a triple bypass surgery. I remember him confidently telling all of us he would see us when the surgery was over. But, the doctors warned us that his chances of survival were slim. After hours of surgery, my grandfather successfully made it through the surgery but succumbed to a heart attack less than six months later. My father, during this same period, radically changed the way he ate and how much he exercised because he too may have thought if he didn’t do so, that heart disease might impact him as well. But unfortunately, heart disease took the life of yet another family member. My aunt who was in her early 40’s and who was young, vibrant, and full of life had a heart attack unexpectedly. She died without us having any warning that she was suffering from cardiovascular disease. Her death was a surprise and reiterated to me at an early age that African American women are also at high risk for heart disease. Heart disease is a condi-

tion which disproportionately affects African Americans. The impact of heart disease on African American women is often unspoken or not fully known. African American women are often unaware of this silent killer and it being the leading cause of death. Heart disease happens when problems are affecting the heart and blood vessels of the heart. Coronary artery disease, also known as CAD, is the most common type of heart disease and is the leading cause of heart attacks. CAD happens when the coronary arteries surrounding and providing blood supply to the heart lose their elasticity, become hardened and narrow because of the build up of plaque inside the artery. The term for this disease is known as atherosclerosis. As this narrowing happens in the arteries, blood flow to the heart can stop or slow

down. Some of the signs of a heart attack can include chest tightening, shortness of breath, pain that spreads to your shoulders, neck, or arms, or other symptoms. Interestingly enough, the Black Women’s Health Imperative states that for women, the signs of a heart attack may be less visible. They can also include: • Chest pain that is sharp but temporary • Nausea or dizziness • Anxiety, weakness, or fatigue • Palpitations, cold sweat, or paleness There are several factors which put Black women at a higher risk for heart dis-

ease. These include diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inactivity, obesity, and a family history of heart disease. Black women are twice as likely to be at risk for stroke versus Caucasians and are often likely to die at a younger age versus other ethnicities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that each year Americans have more than 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes. 48 percent of African American women have some form of cardiovascular disease that includes heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association also reports some unsettling statistics around heart disease and African American women: • Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly 50,000 African American women annually. • Of African American women ages 20 and older, 49 percent have heart conditions. • Only 1 in 5 African A m e r i c a n wo m e n believes she is personally at risk.

• Only 52 percent of Af r ica n Am er ica n women are aware of the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. • Only 36 percent of African American women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk. The good news is that there are ways to decrease your risk of heart attacks and strokes. They are often referred to the as the ABCs and can be implemented and monitored with the help of your doctor. They include: • A - Take aspirin as directed by your health care provider. • B - Control your blood pressure. • C - Manage your cholesterol. • S – Don’t smoke. Eating a healthy diet, controlling your sodium or salt intake, and exercising are also ways to combat heart disease. Your doctor may even suggest medications to help you manage your heart disease. Being aware of how to handle and be proactive about heart disease is the first step to managing and preventing heart disease.

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Choosing the right project for your home renovation Before the housing market collapse of 2007, all renovation projects – no matter how expensive – seemed like winners. Today, home renovation is a whole new ballgame and why you should carefully research any potential fix-up project you're planning for your home. For the past 14 years, Remodeling magazine's annual Remodeling 2016 Cost vs. Value Report (http://www. remodeling.hw.net/cost-vsvalue/2016/) has tracked cost recoupment on renovation projects nationwide and by region, as local tastes are important. Based on trends from transactions tracked in 2015, several guidelines emerged: • Aim to cover your costs. Pre-housing crash, people were investing heavily in their homes and seeing returns greater than 100 percent on their spending. In 2016, the cost and return at resale for the projects listed in the report averaged 64.4 percent for a home sold within a year of the upgrades. Making a profit on a renovation isn't guaranteed, so aim instead to tackle projects that will allow you to recover your costs at the highest possible level.

• Smaller projects focusing on essentials can provide better returns. A decade ago, it was an upscale outdoor deck or a gourmet kitchen. These days, new doors, which can cost under $500 to replace and install, are one of the most popular projects. A high quality fiberglass entry door replacement can recoup an average 82.3 percent of costs; a garage door replacement can return over 90 percent. • Upgrade rooms and spaces, but keep it modest. A minor kitchen remodel including upgraded cabinet fronts, new hardware and the addition of one or two energy-efficient appliances averaged a return of more than 83 percent of original cost compared to the 65 percent

It’s time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in our lives and community.

for the gut jobs. After assessing the national and regional averages, you'll need to evaluate your personal situation, local home market and the type of homes that are selling in your neighborhood. Let's start with the questions you need to ask yourself: • What kinds of improvements make sense for my neighborhood? Generally, exterior renovations that complement nearby homes have greater value, so consider how your new exterior might fit in with other houses on the street. As far as interior renovations, keep your spending in line with your future sale price. For example, a $100,000 kitchen in a home that might not sell for more than $300,000 would

probably be a wasted investment – but a kitchen update worth $10,000 or less might help your house move quicker once it's listed for sale. • How long will I stay post-renovation? Remember, the latest Remodeling magazine numbers cover only one year of cost recovery on projects. People renovate for a variety of needs, either to make the home more livable or to make it more salable. The longer you stay, the more you'll get out of the investment – but if you have to sell soon, think carefully about what you'll need to spend to attract a buyer. • Will this send my property taxes through the roof ? Renovation projects that create larger homes can risk higher property taxes. You should think through potential property tax impact not only for yourself but also for your future buyer. Consider checking with your local residential taxing body to determine "before and after" property tax rates for renovated properties in your vicinity. Sometimes this information might be available on their websites. If you know a real estate broker with significant knowledge of your im-

mediate neighborhood, you might consider speaking with them about this issue. Consider consulting experts to help you answer the basic questions you'll have as you make this decision. Start with trusted financial professionals who can offer a second opinion on what you're planning to do, how much you want to spend, and what particular tax issues may arise when it's time to sell. If you need to borrow to renovate, that means it's time to make sure your credit reports (https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index. action) are accurate and you are pre-qualified or pre-approved for your loan based on what is required. In short, do your homework before you renovate your home. Bottom line: In 2016, home renovation is far from a home run. Know how long you're planning to stay in the home before you start and make sure the project you choose makes sense for your local marketplace or you won't get your money back.
