Gilbert Brown Foundation and AT&T Pioneers team up to offer 10th Annual All-Pro Football Camp at North Division High School The Gilbert Brown Foundation and the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers teamed up once again to hold a free football camp for Milwaukee youth at North Division High School on Tuesday, July 7 to Thursday, July 9, 2015. This is the tenth year that Gilbert Brown has offered the All-Pro Football Camp in Wisconsin. “Through the All-Pro Football Camp, we hope to not only teach kids the skills they need to succeed on the football field, but give them life building skills as well,” said Gilbert Brown. “The camp is one of the highlights of my year, and I’m excited to offer it again in 2015 for the tenth year.” Gilbert Brown’s All-Pro Football Camp was open to children between the ages of 8 and 17. A morning session (8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for 8 to 12 year olds) and an afternoon session (2:00 - 5:30 p.m. for 13 to 17 year olds) was offered each day. The camp has been made possible in part each year through a $1,000 donation from the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers to the Gilbert Brown Foundation. Pioneers also help to put on the 3-day camp each year, working as coaches, volunteering at

the registration and food tents, and helping to provide security. The Pioneers are a local volunteer organization of AT&T employees and retirees dedicated to volunteering their time to various community causes. “The AT&T Pioneers are thrilled to partner with Gilbert Brown and his Foundation to bring this unique opportunity to Milwaukee’s youth,” said AT&T Pioneer Manager Jeannette St. Onge. “Gilbert Brown is a Wisconsin sports legend, and his All-Pro Football Camp is just one of the countless ways he’s contributed to our community.” Over the years, Gilbert's high level of play, warm personality, and the instant connection he made with Packer fans have made him an icon in Wisconsin. Gilbert still finds time to reach out to his fans and supporters in many ways. Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp is another example of his commitment to community and service. Milwaukee County Board Supervisors Weddle and Rainey unveil new chess initiative that targets inner city youths

Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Martin Weddle (left) and Khalif Rainey (right) with Milwaukee youth during the launch of the new chess initiative. Milwaukee County Supervisor Martin Weddle, a former state chess champion, and Sup. Khalif Rainey unveiled a new program designed to teach youths how to play chess and engage in games of chess on Monday, July 6 at the McGovern Park Pavilion, 5400 N. 51st Blvd. The program targets youths in grades 2 through 12, to include chess instruc-

tion, coaching and accessible equipment for the purpose of learning the game and skills of chess with the potential of competitive participation in tournaments. “This is an exciting development for inner city youths and families alike,” Weddle said. “Chess is an excellent self-esteem builder and studies show participation in chess correlated with higher

math and reading test scores. Chess builds mental stamina and is an excellent alternative for those who cannot engage in athletics. It also helps develop skills such as logic and critical thinking. Chess improved my quality of life and I believe it will serve our inner city youths well in their lives.” “Studies show that chess can expand the mind and

help youths with their academic pursuits,” Rainey said. “This is an important step toward giving inner city youths an activity that can actually improve their critical thinking skills, and I applaud Supervisor Weddle for sponsoring this measure. “I am excited for the youths who will soon have the opportunity to play this fascinating game.”

Weddle thanks the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation for their support. He also thanks the Milwaukee Public Market for a $5,000 matching grant to help fund the program, and the Milwaukee County Parks Department. For more information or to donate go to www.wisconsinscholasticchess.org.

Obama administration announces new rule aimed at promoting fair housing The Obama administration announced Wednesday, July 8, 2015, a new rule aimed at promoting fair housing, nearly 50 years after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed to combat segregation and wide-spread discrimination in neighborhoods across the country. Despite the decades old law requiring communities that receive federal funds to increase access to quality, affordable housing, many communities in the U.S. — in cities like Chicago and Baltimore — remain segregated by race and income. Often these majority-minority communities lack access to good schools, grocery stores and to the kinds of opportunities necessary to help residents rise out of poverty. The Department of Housing and Urban Development said the regulations will provide communities that receive HUD funding with data and tools that will help them meet fair housing obligations and goals for affordable housing and community development. “As a former mayor, I know firsthand that strong communities are vital to the well-being and prosperity of families,” HUD Secretary Julián Castro said in a statement. “Unfortunately, too many Americans find their dreams limited by where they come from, and a ZIP code should never determine a child’s future.” Castro later Wednesday morning tweeted “Ensuring that American families can live where they choose isn’t a Republican or Democratic issue — it’s an American issue” with the hashtag “#Fairhousing” at the end. The Fair Housing Act requires HUD and its program recipients to promote fair housing and equal opportunity to ensure that all people have the right to fair housing regardless of their race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or fa-

milial status. The new rule aims to provide program participants with clear guidelines and data — including searchable geo-spatial maps that incorporate data sets about income, race, disability status and other measures — they can use to reach those goals. The rule clarifies and simplifies existing fair housing obligations and creates a streamlined process for

evaluating fair housing, the HUD statement said. “HUD will provide open data to grantees and the public on patterns of integration and segregation, racially and ethnically concentrated areas of poverty, disproportionate housing needs, and disparities in access to opportunity,” the agency said. The new rule has been in the works since July 2013.

Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

When forgiveness matters In the wake of one the largest mass shootings at a Black church in American history, a number of enduring heartfelt lessons occurred. One of those lessons happened during the bond hearing of the shooter, when all of the affected families of the 9 that were killed had a chance to speak during that hearing. One after one, they all spoke about their loved ones in endearing terms and then amazingly offered the words of “forgiveness” to the shooter. “I forgive you...” As those words rang out, it took everyone by surprise, it shocked a nation, it shocked a world and it certainly shocked those living in South Carolina. No one expected to hear those words in public from any family member and especially so early in the

process while holding the shooter accountable. I believe that those words ignited a fire storm and a series of events that called for action on a number of underlying issues that have plagued that state for decades, if not longer. This included the removal of the confederate flag, expanding voting rights, reducing poverty, racial equality, improving employment opportunities and a review of state policies on gun purchases. For all of that, Charleston, South Carolina and even America will never be the same. From my viewpoint and having once lived in Edgefield, South Carolina, did my Naval Reserve duty in Charleston, and visited the city on numerous occasions, what occurred two weeks

Another atrocity has taken place in the African American community. Nine people were killed when Dylann Roof went into a Charleston, South Carolina church and started shooting. Roof announced he wanted to kill black people. Many people scream that this is another show of white hate towards black people. This may be true, but the true enemy doesn’t have a color. The true enemy is a mindset. The enemy of black people

power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. The true enemy

is an anti-black mindset that has permeated the atmosphere of the world for the last 2000 years. It is a thinking process that has either sought to exploit blacks or simply destroy them. The Caucasian is just the latest race to pick up the mentality. Before the Caucasian came out of the caves of Europe the black race was on the run from Arabs. Before the Arabs came with religion the mindset was in certain black people.

Reid's New Golden Gate Funeral Home, Inc.

ago was a “huge moment” and it sparked a new debate about the symbols of slave history and its long lasting effects. Let us not forget that unlike other states in the old south, South Carolina has a unique place in American history for not only being a slave state, but for epic civil war battles, large plantations, shrewd politicians, sea ports, slave auction houses,

secession from the union, and an enduring legacy of poor treatment towards African Americans and other migrants. What makes the events that occurred in Charleston even more distinctive is the fact that the family members of those killed at the church chose to “forgive” the shooter. They certainly did not have to say that, but they did. And perhaps that is where we are today as a society as a whole, we have learned how to “forgive” others. This is the hard part and the struggle is real as it can get, when words cannot express how we really feel, the pain, the loss and the grief. Perhaps Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best “We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the

This enemy anti-black mindset has used various races in different methods to punish the black race. The white supremacist rhetoric that Roof read and spewed on the Internet is the same garbage that has been around for 2000 years. The only difference is the verbiage. The theme is always the same with the underlying tone of blacks as the enemy. It’s ironic that many male white supremacists tend to expose hate towards black people but can’t keep their hands off black women. The sick part is black women know this but keep heading to the bedroom. Blacks feel like they are being targeted unfairly in all aspect of society. The police shoot them down on the streets. Their women are exploited, willingly, as chattel. The black male is pimped by either sports, corporate America, or the prison system. The list goes on to include schooling, housing, etc. You name it, blacks in the

USA feel they are getting the short end, if any. The black race in the United States is not without blame. Many of the blacks in the USA have the enemy anti-black mindset in their heads. Because of this they act like animals towards each other. It was black artists who started making music glorifying pimping black women and killing black men. It was black people who sold the drugs in the community and formed the gangs that terrorize. All of these are manifestations of the enemy anti-black mindset. The way blacks treat each other is an enabler for other races' aggression. The idiocy of black people in the face of such aggression is almost laughable. Looking at the images from television you see people wondering why this is happening to them. This enemy mindset hinders black people from realizing that killing of blacks has never stopped. What Roof did in that church

is no different than what has been going on for thousands of years. Roof ’s actions will make some blacks angry and want to go get guns. Fools. If anyone doesn’t see that violence is what people like Roof want. The black race is so mind whipped until if a race war broke out 90 percent wouldn’t know which side to join. Anyone extolling violence from blacks towards whites is an agent provocateur. This simply means they are working for the other side. Everyone has to wake up and understand where the true enemy is. Whites, blacks, Asian, Latino, whoever have to understand the mindset inside their heads. In all fairness black people haven’t been a menace to anyone except themselves for the last 2500 years. Know the enemy and understand that the true enemy transcends color. Mt. Zion 81st Gospel Chorus Anniversary Celebration

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Healthy living: Children and obesity (Week 2) Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. Despite recent declines in the prevalence among preschool-aged children, obesity among children is still too high. For children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the prevalence of obesity has remained fairly stable at about 18 percent and affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade. Here are the facts: • The prevalence of obesity among children aged 2 to 5 years decreased significantly from 13.9 percent in 2003-2004 to 8.4 percent in 2011-2012. • The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to nearly 18 percent in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5 percent to nearly 21 percent over the same period. • Obesity prevalence differs among racial/ethnic groups and also varies by age, sex, and adult head of household and education level.

social consequences that often continue into adulthood. Implementing prevention/ educational programs and getting a better understanding of treatment for youngsters is important to controlling the obesity epidemic. • Overall, obesity prevalence among children whose adult head of household completed college was approximately half that of those whose adult head of household did not complete high school (9 percent versus 19 percent among girls; 11 percent versus 21 percent among boys) in 1999–2010. • Among non-Hispanic white children, the lowest prevalence of obesity was observed among those whose adult head of household completed college; however, this was not the case for non-Hispanic black children. • Over time, the prevalence of obesity among girls whose adult head of household had

not finished high school increased from 17 percent (1999–2002) to 23 percent (2007–2010), but decreased for girls whose adult head of household completed college from 11 percent (1999–2002) to 7 percent (2007–2010). There was not a similar finding among boys.* Parents and adults must promote healthy eating and physical activity among young children, adolescents and teens encouraging them to eat healthy and exercise regularly to prevent overweight and obesity in children. According to the American Obesity Treatment Association** obesity in children can result in many health and

'This has to stop!' Prayer vigil held for teen killed over online dispute

Staff Photo

On July 7, 2015, Prophet Malcolm Hunt spoke at a prayer vigil at the intersection of N. 62nd and W. Fiebrantz streets. The prayer vigil was organized by the family of 14-year-old Tariq Akbar, who was allegedly shot and killed by a 15-year-old male after a Facebook dispute involving a girl turned tragic near the Lakefront just as the fireworks were concluding. "This has to stop," said Prophet Hunt. "[Tariq] was the 82nd person to be shot and killed in Milwaukee this year, only two less than all shootings in 2014." Prophet Hunt is in charge of the crime and incarceration committee of Pastors United. He said it is customary for families of victims who have been shot and killed to hold a prayer vigil. He said he attends as many as his schedule permits. Prophet Hunt estimated about 100 persons came to support the Akbar family.

Education

Where are the Black male teachers? By Donald G. Nicolas Often, particularly in urban schools and districts, someone asks: "Where are the black male teachers?" Statements affirming the need for more black male teachers are commonplace. As an experienced black educator and former assistant principal, I have heard assertions that more must be done to increase the number of black educators in our schools. I have also seen the tremendous impact an effective black male educator can have in the classroom. Notice I use the word effective; this is because an ineffective black male educator can have a more detrimental impact on a school than perhaps a teacher from any other demographic. If I am being candid, I can attest personally to the fact that in many schools, the only abundance of black men comes in the form of custodians, food-service employees, and transportation workers. In addition, in conversations with my colleagues, it is widely understood that if black men are educators, they more often than not are physical education teachers or coach in some capacity. Black men are largely underrepresented in our nation's classrooms; it has been widely reported that they make up less than

2 percent of our country's teachers. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is heading up several initiatives to help recruit black men into our classrooms, most notably TEACH.org, a public-private initiative with a mission to "help great candidates find places in today's rapidly evolving classrooms." However, could all efforts to increase the number of black men in the classroom be in vain? I think so. Let me explain why, and what we can do to help. According to recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 82 percent of public school teachers in school year 201112 were white. When black men first enter the classroom, there is a high likelihood that they may be only one of maybe two or three black males on the staff, even in some predominantly black schools and districts. When hiring decisions are made within a school, they largely depend on "fit": Will this person fit in at our school, and how well? Needless to say, adding a black man to the staff will automatically change a school's dynamics. As a black male teacher who has mentored other black male teachers, I can speak to the fact that parents, students, and fellow teachers may watch the black

male employee more closely because of the rarity of the situation. The educator as well as the school community must be prepared for this. It takes a certain amount of character to accept and live up to this reality and the expectations that come with standing out. As a teacher or administrator with a black male teacher on staff, inquire periodically about his comfort level and/ or difficulties he is having. Reassure him about his importance to the staff as a whole. Find time to debrief with him generally in an open and honest dialogue independent of any evaluative repercussions. A deficiency of black males in the classroom obviously leads directly to a lack of them in school leadership roles, such as principal and assistant principal. Educators have long said that men-

toring is a key to success for many new teachers. In fact, many districts have mandatory induction programs for first- and second-year teachers. Part of the mentor experience includes pairing the new teacher with an administrator or teacher who will observe, discuss research, and share experiences in an effort to foster the novice's growth as an education professional. "When black men first enter the classroom, there is a high likelihood that they may be only one of maybe two or three black males on the staff." The expectation is that new educators will have mentors who have their best interests and professional growth at heart. I honestly think it's a challenge for black men to find someone in their school willing to level with them and be honest about the great responsibility that comes not only with being an educator, but a black male educator at that. So many times I've personally seen young teachers written off and led astray by "mentors" who didn't mentor them and allowed them to sink into what can be a professional abyss. If any teacher is not given the proper support, it is easy to be consumed by the overwhelming responsibility of being an educator. When black male teachers are on the staff in urban schools that need their presence, it is imperative that a concerted effort be made to provide these men with car-

ing, spirited mentors who understand their importance and vigorously provide them guidance. You can't be what you don't see. So many times it is said black boys want to be rappers or athletes because when they turn on the television, that's what they see. If more black male teachers were in our nation's classrooms, it would dramatically alter children's aspirations. I wrote this commentary because I believe every single conversation about education today must begin with the need to increase diversity in the teaching force. A conversation about standards, teacher quality, or graduation rates cannot begin without a vigorous effort and commitment to this cause. Think about the first time you had a black male teacher, if ever. If you did, chances are you will never forget him. I firmly believe that if we put positive black men in front of these students, more young black boys will aspire to be educators. Ask two people how many African American male educators they've had in their K-12 school careers. It is my hypothesis that most will give you an answer between zero and two. Continue the conversation by affirming the need to increase this number. Poor achievement among our neediest students is the result, at least in part, of a lack of strong, positive black educators in the classrooms. This nation needs to move swiftly to engage more African American men in teaching. No longer can we simply be OK with black men representing less than 2 percent of our teacher workforce. It is unacceptable. Donald G. Nicolas is a 5th grade teacher at a public school in Broward County, FL.

Health & Fitness

Cut your heart failure risk in half as you age In more good news for those who don’t let aging keep them from practicing healthy habits, a new study finds the fittest seniors are half as likely as others to suffer from heart failure. “Older adults can make simple changes to reduce their heart failure risk, such as not smoking, engaging in moderate physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight,” said study author Liana Del Gobbo, a Ph.D. student with the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. Heart failure is very common among older people, the researchers said. “A person aged 55 has a one-in-three chance of developing heart failure in his lifetime,” Del Gobbo said, and the condition is the leading cause of hospitalization in people covered by Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program for seniors. “Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump sufficiently to maintain blood flow to meet the body’s needs,” Del Gobbo explained. Heart failure can cause fluids to build up in the feet and legs, leading to painful swelling. Patients with the condition can become tired easily, and other health problems can develop. In the worst cases, heart failure can require a heart transplant and lead to death.

The study authors launched their research to gain a better understanding of the risk factors for heart failure, Del Gobbo said. To do so, they followed more than 4,400 people aged 65 and older for up to 22 years. The participants — 61 percent women, 89 percent white and 11 percent black — were enrolled in the study in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Over the time the study participants were followed, there were 1,380 cases of heart failure. After the researchers adjusted their statistics so they wouldn’t be thrown off by other factors, they found no link between diet and heart failure rates. But those who walked faster (over 3 miles per hour versus under 2 miles per hour) were 26 percent less likely to suffer from heart failure. And those who met four or more criteria for good health

were 45 percent less likely to suffer from heart failure. The criteria included several measures of physical fitness plus alcohol intake — ideal is “more than one drink/week, but not more than one or two drinks a day,” according to Del Gobbo. Why doesn’t diet seem to matter? “Diet is a very important factor in the development of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases,” she said. “Heart failure has some different underlying causes for its development than these conditions. We did find increased risk of heart failure in people with higher sodium [salt] intake, which makes sense because a high-sodium diet increases a person’s risk for high blood pressure, a key risk factor for developing heart failure.” What should people learn from the findings?

“Physical activity among older adults does not have to be strenuous to achieve health benefits,” Del Gobbo said. “We saw benefits for adults who walked at a moderate or brisk pace and burned calories through leisure activity, like house or yard work, walking, engaging in outdoor activities, or other forms of physical activity, equivalent to about 30 minutes per day.” It’s not clear how active the study participants were before the age of 65, so there’s no way to know how healthy habits earlier in life affected them. Researchers also don’t know whether healthier habits — earlier in life, later in life or both — directly reduced heart failure rates because the study was not designed to find a cause-andeffect link. Dr. David Maron, director of preventive cardiology at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, co-wrote a commentary accompanying the study. Maron said he believes the study provides “strong and plausible” indications that healthy habits reduce the risk of heart failure, although he acknowledges that it doesn’t prove they do. “A healthy lifestyle may not only help you reach an old age,” he said, “it may help you avoid heart failure when you get there.” The study appears in the

July 6 issue of the journal JACC: Heart Failure, published by the American College of Cardiology.

Meet the first African American woman to be named principal dancer at American Ballet Theater, Misty Copeland Misty Copeland was fast becoming the most famous ballerina in the United States — making the cover of Time magazine, being profiled by “60 Minutes,” growing into a social media sensation and dancing ballet’s biggest roles on some of its grandest stages. But another role eluded her: She was still not a principal dancer. Until Tuesday, June 30, 2015 when Ms. Copeland became the first African American woman to be named a principal in the 75-year history of American Ballet Theater. Even as her promotion was celebrated by her many fans, it raised all-too-familiar questions about why African American dancers, particularly women, remain so underrepresented at top ballet companies in the 21st century, despite the work of pioneering black dancers who broke racial barriers in the past. And it showed how media and communications have changed in dance, with Ms. Copeland deftly using modern tools — an online ad she made for Under Armour has been viewed more than 8 million times — to spread her fame far beyond traditional dance circles, drawing new audiences to ballet. “I had moments of doubting myself, and wanting to quit, because I didn’t know

that there would be a future for an African American woman to make it to this level,” Ms. Copeland said at a news conference at the Metropolitan Opera House on Tuesday afternoon. “At the same time, it made me so hungry to push through, to carry the next generation. So it’s not me up here — and I’m constantly saying that — it’s everyone that came before me that got me to this position.” Fittingly, the moment of her promotion was captured on video and shared on Instagram. “Misty, take a bow,” Kevin McKenzie, Ballet Theater’s artistic director, could be seen saying, before colleagues congratulated Ms. Copeland, who seemed to be fighting back tears. Her promotion was lauded on social media by, among others, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Prince, who had featured her in a video. Over the past year, whenever Ms. Copeland, 32, danced leading roles with Ballet Theater, her performances became events, drawing large, diverse, enthusiastic crowds to cheer her on at the Metropolitan Opera House, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. After she starred in “Swan Lake” with Ballet Theater last week — becoming the first Afri-

Misty Copeland can American to do so with the company at the Met — the crowd of autographseekers was so large that it had to be moved away from the cramped area outside the stage door. In a break with ballet tradition, Ms. Copeland was unusually outspoken about her ambition of becoming the first black woman to be named a principal by Ballet Theater, one of the country’s most prestigious companies, which is known for its international roster of stars and for staging full-length classical story ballets. She wrote about her goals and struggles in a memoir published last year, “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina.” A number of leading dance companies and schools, including Ballet Theater, have begun new efforts to increase diversity in classical ballet,

but there is a long way to go. Jennifer Homans, the author of “Apollo’s Angels,” a history of ballet, said that ballet had fallen far behind other art forms, like theater, in that regard — making what she called the “phenomenon” of Ms. Copeland all the more important. “What she has come to represent is so important in the dance world, and in the ballet world in particular,” said Ms. Homans, who is the director of the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University. “I think it’s about time. But I don’t think it’s enough.” This history made Ms. Copeland’s chances for promotion a much-discussed topic in the dance world, and put a rare public spotlight on Ballet Theater as it weighed the kind of personnel decision that, in the rarefied world of

ballet, is seldom talked about openly. That race could still be such an issue in 2015 — and that African-Americans could remain so rarely seen in elite ballet companies — has been depressing to many dancegoers, and has led to impassioned discussions in the dance world and beyond about race, stereotypes and image. The dearth of black women in top ballet companies has been attributed to a variety of factors, from the legacy of discrimination and lingering stereotypical concepts of what ballerinas should look like to the lack of exposure to ballet and training opportunities in many communities. More than a half-century has passed since the pioneering black dancer Arthur Mitchell broke through the color barrier and became a principal dancer at New York City Ballet in 1962, and a generation has elapsed since Lauren Anderson became the first African American principal at Houston Ballet, in 1990. But City Ballet has had only two black principal dancers, both men: Mr. Mitchell and Albert Evans, who died last week. Ballet Theater officials said that the company’s only African American principal dancer

Misty Copeland (Continued from pg. 13) before now was Desmond Richardson, who joined as a principal in 1997. In ballet, principals earn not only the respect of the dance world but are also paid more, dance bigger roles and see their photos in programs, as well as their names in larger type. Ms. Copeland last seemed on the verge of promotion in 2012 after a breakthrough performance in the title role of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird,” but she was sidelined by injury. Ms. Copeland’s promotion was announced by Mr. McKenzie at a company meeting on Tuesday morning. Three other dancers, enormously respected in the dance world but far less famous outside of it, were also made principals. Stella Abrera, who has been a soloist with the company since 2001, was promoted, and two more principals were hired from

In last week’s “Swan Lake,” cheers for Ms. Copeland repeatedly stopped the show. Smartphones came out to record her curtain calls, and

she was handed bouquets onstage by Ms. Anderson and Raven Wilkinson, who danced with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the late 1950s. Afterward, little girls carried copies of “Firebird” to be signed, and several adults held copies of “Life in Motion,” the memoir Ms. Copeland wrote with Charisse Jones. The crowd cheered when she emerged from the theater. A man shouted: “Principal! Principal, Misty! Principal, dear!” A woman called out, “Congratulations, Misty!” Before signing autographs and posing for pictures, Ms. Copeland addressed the crowd in a quiet voice choked with emotion. “Thank you so, so much for your support — it means so much to me to have you all here,” she said. “It’s such a special day for me, and for so many people who have come before me. So thank you for being here on this amazing day.” Before Copeland, takes the prestigious role at the American Ballet Theatre, she is taking a side trip to Broadway, where she will star in the classic musical “On the Town.”
