Vice presidential hopeful Tim Kaine visits Milwaukee

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine outlined Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s five-point plan to increase the number of “family supporting jobs” during a visit on Friday, August 5, 2016 in front of a crowd of more than 250 supporters at the Lakefront Brewery on Commerce Street. Kaine said that if elected President, Hillary Clinton would make the biggest investment in jobs the U.S. has ever attempted. He criticized Clinton’s rival, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump, as the “you’re fired” candidate, referring to the line Trump made famous on his reality television show, The Apprentice. Clinton’s five-point plan includes investing in infrastructure, and making it easier for unions to organize, making college education affordable, raising the minimum wage, and eliminating loopholes that allow the wealthy to avoid paying a proportional share of income taxes.

Pastors United hosts Annual 'A Family Affair' back-to-school event On Saturday, August 6, 2016 Pastors United hosted their annual "A Family Affair: United We Stand" back-to-school event.

On Friday, August 5, 2016, Nehemiah, Inc., hosted their closing program to honor the graduates of this year's Summer Youth Learning Camp. The youth camp is a six-week math and literacy camp lead by certified teachers.

As part of the program the children received certificates of completion, and enjoyed a uplifting keynote speech from community activist Sherry Hill (right photo). The program, coordinated by Karen Shaw and Connie Dallas, helps children tutor children during the summer recess. Bader Philanthropies, Inc. announces new global headquarters Relocation demonstrates full-circle commitment to promoting positive change in Milwaukee

Bader Philanthropies, Inc., one of southeastern Wisconsin’s top five foundations, announced that it plans to relocate and build a global headquarters on Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr., in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood. The new office location is in response to the organization’s overall strategic growth plan and allows the Foundation to truly “live its mission" by putting down roots and embedding itself in one of the many communities it supports. The new location is tentatively scheduled to open in summer 2018, when the organization’s current lease expires in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. All of the staff will be relocating to the new office at that time.

While Bader Philanthropies funds programs throughout greater Milwaukee, and will continue to do so, this will make it the first foundation in Wisconsin that funds programs in the central city to move its offices there. Since 1992, Bader Philanthropies has granted more than $265 million and has given more than 6,000 grants to non-

Bader Philanthropies’ vision and hope is that the physical building provides a welcoming environment and becomes a living example of what is possible when people and organizations work together with the common goal of transforming lives.

The new space will include more than 22,000 square feet to accommodate offices for program and operations staff, conference rooms and a business center for program partners. Within the new building, 3,700 square feet will be dedicated to meeting space which will increase and improve convening capabilities for both internal needs and community partners accommodating up to 120 people, which doubles its current capacity. In addition to the building itself, there are plans for nearly 50 guest parking spaces. The building is conveniently located near I-43 to allow guests easy on and off access to the Foundation.

To accommodate its new global headquarters, Bader Philanthropies purchased three private properties and four sites owned by the City of Milwaukee. One of the private properties, a multiuse building that has been

a part of the neighborhood since 1927 but has been vacant for the last several years, will be incorporated into the new office’s design to further showcase Harambee’s proud traditions and rich history.

Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin in June 2017, following the pre-development and design phases.

Bader Philanthropies, Inc. plans to engage Harambee residents and its neighbors regarding its new location.

Residents will have the opportunity to see renderings of the new global headquarters, learn more about Bader Philanthropies and ask questions. The listening session will be coordinated with 6th District Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs.

Rebuilding Our Community

Gold Star families I know that there are no major holidays coming soon in which to pay tribute to those who are on or have served on active duty, in the reserves or National Guard.

But, I believe when an opportunity presents itself, we should take a moment or so to reflect upon what it means to serve in any branch of the U.S. military. It is clear that our great nation owes a deep gratitude to all those men and women who have help to keep the values of America first and foremost. Our gratitude should go even deeper when we consider those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in support of those freedoms.

Since the beginning, and even now, nothing can adequately prepare a family when

the news comes that a loved one has died while serving the country and nothing can erase the pain caused by that loss. Certainly, nothing will ever give a family the comfort and peace they seek, for their journey is a search for meaning and understanding.

And “…on behalf of a grateful nation, please accept this flag as symbol of our appreciation for you loved one’s honorable and faithful service.”

Nearly 100 years ago, during World War I (July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918) something different took place when a servicemen was killed in combat; a gold star was placed over a service flag blue star. The gold star signified the family’s pride in the loved one’s sacrifice rather

than the mourning of their personal loss. In reflection, many gold star families wear a gold star lapel pin to signify their pride. The lapel pin displays a gold star with a purple background surrounded by a gold wreath. Today, the National Gold Star Family Reg-

istry notes on its website that 472,045 fallen service members have been registered by relatives.

But the Gold Star program is more; it has been designed to help ease the burden of families through a number of ways, including reaching out to families; providing information on available resources and benefits; providing a sympathetic ear; and connecting them to other Gold Star families who live in the area. In addition, many businesses and companies help to support Gold Star activities. This unique program also helps to raise awareness through events, memorials, or to establish a foundation in the memory of a lost service member. And the best

way to support a Gold Star family is to remember and honor their fallen hero.

The USA is ready for football It’s the time of year when everyone has a reason to forget the problems of the world. You can ignore the presidential race and the racism in the USA. Protests and marches can be put on pause for the next six months.

August is the prelude to September; and September means football.

I can see the smiles on American faces at the mention of the word football.

Football is without a doubt the American game. Baseball may be the game of history, but football is the game of today. Football is dominant in American culture and practice starts in August.

Football will soon begin to consume a major portion of the evening newscast. If

your city has an NFL team, chances are the lead off story will be about that team. If your city has an NFL team and a successful college team nearby, the newscast will be a sportscast. This is the power of football in the USA. People will still pay attention to the political scene but they will do so with a divided eye.

There are pundits who believe that football should be banned.

The concussion issues that plague football players are well documented. This event will probably never take place. Can you imagine a Saturday afternoon without college football on television? I won’t even task your brain to try to imagine a Sunday without the NFL. No matter the health risk it

Football can pull together people of all races for 60 minutes. The white racist will cheer the black running back for his favorite team.

The black person who hates whites will root for the white quarterback of their favorite team. During a football game the issue of race takes a back seat in people’s minds.

The desire to see one's team win becomes the dominant thought process. Race may affect the officiating, but the fans usually are on the same page. Maybe the USA can learn from this?

If people of all ethnic backgrounds can come together and agree to be Packer fans, why not agree on social issues? All races of people attend football games on every level. This is especially true for big colleges and the

With the sad state of affairs in the USA today, football is a blessing. It will give people a chance to safely funnel their energy into a game for release. It is better to have people ranting at television screens than police in the streets. Lord knows it is better to see Deion Sanders clowning on television than Al Sharpton the clown.

Football season is here.

Fans of teams in the AFC West and the ACC should worry. The Oakland Raiders and Miami Hurricanes are returning to dominance.

As they say, it’s payback time.

There is one thing everyone will agree upon. Football is one avenue where black lives matter.

It’s back to school time! College students (Week 2) There are many parents who are sending their student off to college for the first time. Going from high school to college is a huge transition. It’s epic in a child’s life! A child is moving from the comfort of their parent’s home to move into a dorm in some cases in a different city, town or state. For some students it is their first time away from home for an extended period of time. Join this writer in praying for all of our students who are moving into this new chapter in their life.

Pray for their protection and that they will select the circle of friends who will be a help to them rather than a hindrance. This week, for those first-time college students, here are a few musthave supplies, compliments of eCampusTours.com: Adhesive page markers.

Marking your textbooks with page markers will make your studying efforts much more efficient. Use different colors to indicate certain topic points for easy reference.

Backpack/messenger bag. You will most definite-

ly need a bag to carry all of your textbooks and your laptop across campus. You have a variety of bag options to choose from, such as a standard backpack, a messenger bag, laptop bag, etc. If you purchase a high-quality bag, it should last you throughout your college career.

Binders/folders/notebooks. Every student has a preferred method of taking notes and keeping these notes organized. If you prefer paper over digital, be sure to obtain a binder or folder for each course for better organization.

Calculator. Even if you don't plan to major in a field that requires a lot of math or science classes, you will still be required to take at least one math and/or sci-

ence course in your general education studies. Your major will determine the type of calculator you will need.

Check with your major department for specific calculator requirements.

Flash drive.

With the advent of free cloud storage, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive, a flash drive is not as big of a necessity as it has been in previous years. However, there are still a few benefits of using a flash drive for your college documents, such as maintaining physical custody and security of your files and not needing internet access to retrieve your files.

Highlighters. These are a must-have for college students. Use highlighters to make the most essential information in your textbooks and notes stand out.

Index cards. Studying with index cards is a great way to learn material. Writing subject matter on index cards will help you better retain in-

formation, and the cards are easy to take on-the-go to use as flashcards.

Laptop/printer.

Some colleges require students to have laptops, while others do not. And while you will have access to your school's computer lab, the convenience of having your own will make the cost worthwhile.

Pens/pencils. Even if you will be taking notes digitally, you will still need pens and pencils.

Printer paper. You will be writing a lot of papers in college so be sure to stock up on printer paper.

Stapler. Carry a mini stapler in your backpack as you never know when you may need to turn in multiple pages for a class assignment.

Think of it this way: your 3- or 4-yearold is accustomed to being surrounded by loving people, their parents and siblings 24/7, and school is their first time spending a large portion of their day away from those people. You want to look for a preschool teacher who is very engaged, Tyre said.

Have a conversation with a prospective teacher about their current classroom.

They should be able to speak about individual students' strengths and weaknesses and be well informed of their background, interests, emotional and academic achievements. You want a teacher who takes great pride in his or her students' progress and is consistently open to their improvement. "When I meet great teachers, they are those for whom every day is a new day," Tyre told TIME. "They are constantly ready for their kids to step up and learn more." Above all, Tyre said, avoid crabby preschool teachers and those who are too authoritarian. "I see it all the time — pre-K teachers who are barking orders and being very harsh with kids," she said. "I don't think that's appropriate."

2. The early years: words, words, words Your child should be surrounded with words, especially in the early years, Tyre said. You want to look for books in the classroom and be sure the class makes regular visits to the library.

You also want to ensure the teacher sets aside lots of time for reading, reading instruction and storytelling. In the preschool and kindergarten

years, be sure the teacher is providing the building blocks for learning to read. They should focus on syllabication, e.g., "B makes the 'bah' sound" and "the boy had a big blue ball."

3. Math can not be an afterthought From the first days of school, your kids should be exposed to math concepts.

"When your child is preschool age, what you need to know is this: there is no need to wait until children are older and are able to think and speak in more abstract ways to introduce math concepts," Tyre writes in The Good School. "A certain kind of math ability seems to be innate in all of us and has been measured days after birth." Which means, in your child's preschool class you should hear teachers discussing basic math concepts with students. Things like greater than, less than, bigger, smaller and reinforcing the number concept ("How much is three?"). As a parent you can follow up on these things at home by doing something as simple as counting the number of Cheerios in the morning. Don't like math or convinced you are bad at it? Don't tell your kids. Tyre said parents who pass an antimath sentiment on to their kids hurt their chances of success. In the U.S., parents, kids and even teachers may describe a person as "bad at math," but in other countries where kids perform better in math, if a student is not performing well in math, parents, kids and teachers say he or she needs to work harder.

"Math is not a talent; like having a good singing voice, it's a muscle you develop," Tyre said. Be on the lookout for a teacher who expresses a great deal of enthusiasm about math, she said. "You do not want a teacher who is scared of math," she said.

4. Don't focus too much on standardized-test scores Sometimes, good test scores can be an indication that a school is doing a very good job of educating its students, but other times it can be an indication that the school is teaching to the test.

The real danger zone for women and heart disease? Before menopause Heart disease risk factors — such as abnormal cholesterol levels and high blood pressure — appear to increase before a woman goes through menopause, not after, new research finds.

“These risk factors related to heart disease and stroke appear to worsen rapidly in the years leading up to menopause, and during the postmenopausal period they progress less rapidly,” said Dr. Mark DeBoer, the study’s senior author. He’s an associate professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Virginia.

In the past, he said, experts believed that a rapid increase in heart disease and stroke risk factors took place in women after menopause.

They thought this was when women “catch up” to men’s risk.

However, the new research finds the rapid increase in risk factors starts well before the last menstrual period.

The real danger zone, DeBoer’s team concluded, was before and during menopause.

And, the transition began even sooner and progressed faster for black women, the researchers found.

For the study, the researchers evaluated the medical records of nearly 1,500 women enrolled in a national study looking at the causes and effects of hardening of the arteries. The women were studied over a 10-year period

as they transitioned through menopause.

The researchers looked specifically for five risk factors for heart disease and stroke. These included a large waistline, high blood fat levels (triglycerides), low “good” cholesterol or HDL, high blood sugar and high blood pressure.

Together, these risk factors are called “metabolic syndrome,” the researchers said.

cantly raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.

Overall, DeBoer’s team found, women had a rapid increase in these risk factors during the last years of premenopause and during the perimenopause transition, right before menopause.

DeBoer said it’s not possible to quantify exactly how much the risk factors increased. But “there was a continued worsening of risk factors in the years leading up to the transition,” he said.

After menopause, the changes generally plateaued, though white women continued to have drops in their HDL cholesterol levels.

Black women seemed to fare slightly better in postmenopause, with a slowing in the progression of metabolic syndrome, the study reported.

The findings were published online Aug. 3 in the Journal of the American Heart

Association.

Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum is director of women’s heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. She said the study suggests that “the risk factors go up even sooner than we thought,” and should be a wakeup call.

Both DeBoer and Steinbaum agreed that the takehome message is to pay attention to lifestyle and modify it when needed well before menopause.

Steinbaum recommends women be sure their weight is under control, their diet is healthy and that they are getting enough exercise.

The study results should provide doctors and other health care professionals with convincing information to motivate women before they go through menopause to decrease the risk of getting health problems, DeBoer said.

taught in the school, which means if the school is only teaching the test material, your child is missing out on a lot. Ideally, a school will teach a rich and complicated curriculum, Tyre said, wherein students get a tremendous amount of information, with the test answers embedded throughout. And, she noted, "Test scores going up for one year means nothing, so drop the contest mentality."

Instead, ask to see the desegregated test results that break out various student populations. Focus on the English-language-learning students — even if your child is not one of them — those students are the hardest to teach and are often the lowest quartile, so if their scores are going up, that really says something about the school.

But don't stop there, ask why the scores have gone up. You want a thoughtful answer, Tyre said, not simply, 'Oh, we have this new program that helps us teach the test'.

5. There is no excuse for a school day with no recess What a mistake that is, Tyre said. "No one thinks this is a good idea," she said. Apart from the obvious physical benefits of aerobic exercise, studies have shown recess also increases cognitive functioning, she said. Tyre has seen elementary schools built without playgrounds, schools functioning like boot camps or reading-and-math factories, based on the idea that more instructional time means more learning. "Avoid those schools," Tyre said.

"Kids need downtime — a break from the rigor. Twenty minutes a day, at least."

The same is true for middle-school and high school students — they need breaks too.

6. Teachers matter — even more than you think While not even a superteacher can entirely alleviate the effects of poverty on students, excellent teachers not only teach more, but they can even accelerate the rate of learning among their students. And good schools champion great teachers, Tyre said. They grow them.

Look for schools that provide teachers with mentors, instruction and discussion of best practices. Find a school where the teachers are not being treated as interchangeable cogs. "If you show up and the fourth-grade teacher is now teaching kindergarten, that's not a good sign," Tyre told TIME. "Ask, How has that teacher been prepared for this year? What kind of additional training did they receive over the summer?" Additionally, Tyre recommends that during school tours, parents ask questions such as, "How do administrators evaluate the teachers?" and "How often are classroom lessons observed?" Don't be afraid to ask teachers where they completed their undergraduate studies and what they studied. "It's not snobbery," Tyre said. "Teachers who graduate from more selective colleges — public and private — get better results out of kids."

7. It's not all in the name There is no colloquial designation that guarantees quality. Just the word charter or private does not mean the school is a success. In fact, Tyre said, only 1 in 5 charter schools performs better than the schools they replace.

"There is no uniformly great private school, no uniformly great charter school and no uniformly great public school," Tyre said. "There is no easy name that you can gravitate toward that will allow you to suspend judgment." So do your homework. The public school down the road could be just as good as the private school that costs $30,000 a year.
