A night of unrest leads to a morning of questions and a clean up

Photos by Lynda Jackson Conyers

An African American Milwaukee Police Officer fatally shot a 23-year-old black man named Sylville K. Smith, who was armed with a stolen high-magazine pistol after he fled from a traffic stop on Saturday afternoon August 13. Smith refused the officer’s orders to drop the weapon. Video from the officer’s body

camera has not yet been released, but Attorney General Brad Schimel has pledged to make the video public as soon as his investigation is complete. As the sun set on Saturday, tempers grew increasingly tense between police and residents and the incident sparked civil unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood. The violence carried over to Sunday night. Four Milwaukee Police Officers and four Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Deputies were shot on Sunday evening, according to WISN-TV 12 News. A civilian was also shot on Sunday and rescued by police. The police did not return fire. Damage from fires set at neighborhood

businesses is expected to exceed several million dollars, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Eight local area businesses were vandalized, including three liquor stores and a gas station which was set on fire on Saturday. Gunfire prevented Milwaukee Fire Department officials from extinguishing the blaze promptly. The agency is offering rewards of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for starting the fires. Not all residents engaged in the lawlessness. Some attempted to clean up the debris left by the overnight destruction.

Moving beyond Sherman Park to a brighter future By: Urban Media News “Anyone from Milwaukee saw this coming. It was always when, not if.” So said outgoing State Representative Mandela Barnes this week after nights of unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood in the wake of another fatal police shooting. The images of stores set on fire, police in riot gear, and a community in pain have made headlines this week, but while they are disheartening they do not come as a shock to the community. The reality of being a person of color in Milwaukee is well understood by those who live here. What is harder to understand is where we go from here. How do you begin to address racial disparities in education and economic opportunity? Where do you start when it comes to addressing divides decades in the making? Who can the community turn to for answers and solutions so that we can get past the recent headlines and address the root causes that will lead to the changes so desperately needed? Answers to the first two questions are many and varied, worthy of more than discussion but action in the days, weeks, and months that lie ahead. The answer to the third question is easier. The community must first look within. There are every day, ordinary heroes in the Sherman Park Community who have set an example for all to follow in the wake of destruction. Leaders in the faith community who prayed not just for peace, but for justice. Volunteers, including children, who gave of their

time to assist in clean-up efforts. That is how the healing has begun, but it cannot end there. The Sherman Park neighborhood and all of our communities of color in Wisconsin must now look to the past for inspiration and a path forward. Progress, change, and advancement have come far too slowly in our communities, state, and nation. But they have come. Most often, it has taken a combination of good works in the community paired with effective public policy and leaders who understand how to advance a cause. We are already seeing the community step up. The next step is rising up as a community to demand, en masse, changes to public policy and leaders who will give more than lip service to the challenges we face. This fall, we have an opportunity to do just that in local, state, and federal elections. The surest way to make progress is to ensure electing representatives who have our back, and holding them accountable in the future if they fail to back up words with action. In the 2012 election, turnout among communities of color was off the charts in Wisconsin when President Barack Obama was re-elected. Sadly, a well established pattern held, as turnout and

participation declined in spring elections and the 2014 midterm election. It is simply not enough to only vote in presidential election years like this one. The policies enacted by the leaders we elect in every election at the local and state level have a profound impact on our communities. Wisconsin has seen that up close in the last five years. If we are unsatisfied with what we have in terms of elected representatives, we must act at the ballot box to do better. If the policies enacted are failing to address the challenges we face, we must act at the ballot box to remove those who stand in the way of progress. It has to be on all of us, all the time. President Obama is fond of imploring crowds, “don’t boo, vote!” He’s never just meant for him, nor meant only once every four years. He understands that our surest power as a community is not as individual voices, be they crying out for justice loudly or in quiet, but as a collective community mobilizing ourselves to make the changes we want to see as members of a democracy. In the weeks ahead before Election Day, raise your voices, ask the hard questions, and demand accountability from those seeking your votes. That is the path to

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

It’s back-to-school time! Homeschoolers (Week 3) Back-to-school time is not reserved just for those students who are enrolled in a traditional school program. Homeschoolers can enjoy the excitement of this back-to-school time as well! Homeschool, also known as home education, is the education of children at home as opposed to the formal settings of a public or private school. Home education is usually conducted by a parent or tutor. Some students are homeschooled year round so there is no technically “back -to-school” day; but you can select a day during the school year to celebrate your children and your homeschool. Simple Homeschool (simplehomeschool.net) offers these back-to-school ideas to make back-to-school time special for your children: 1. Serve up a special breakfast. You can also choose a healthy breakfast snack, place a candle in it and sung “Happy First Day of School to You” sung to the popular tune of “Happy Birthday to You.” 2. Take a photo. Taking photos to commemorate the first day of school.

Bible Scripture for the week from Psalm 25 of David 3. Take a walk. A special walk or a quick around the block can be a ritual for the first day of school or before any new learning takes place. Walk at the children’s pace, whether it is fast or slow. Walking has all kinds of benefits. It allows for active bodies and it gets the students moving before being required to sit still for a while. It also makes for an easy transition to table time once the students return home. 4. Wrap up school supplies. New workbooks that introduces a new subject

during any time of the year or new school supplies at the beginning of a new year wrapped with a little gift will be welcomed with excitement! 5. Give flowers to your children. Children as well as adults enjoy receiving flowers. Welcome a new school year with a special plant or flowers in a vase for each child on their desk or spot at the table with a card attached. If you are a year round homeschooler, celebrate with flowers as students’ advance to a new grade level.

1 In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. 2 I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause. 4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. 6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. 7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good. 8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. 9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. 11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. 12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.[b] 13 They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land. 14 The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. 15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare. 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. 17 Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. 18 Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. 19 See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me! 20 Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. 21 May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord,[c] is in you. 22 Deliver Israel, O God, from all their troubles!

What Is Possible: A high level of respect for the individuals and communities we serve. Adrienne’s breast cancer went into remission in October 2014. But she still depends on the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network for her regular, preventive checkups. Why? Because, as Adrienne says, “They take the time to get to know me and be concerned about me as a whole person, not just as a patient.” And that helps Adrienne continue to give back to the community by working with its youth. To learn more about Adrienne’s story, visit froedtert.com/stories. To find the doctor who is right for you, call 1-800-DOCTORS or visit froedtert.com.

Milwaukee Public Schools, UW-Madison call for other partners to strengthen and grow agriculture curriculum at Vincent High School Milwaukee Public Schools and University of Wisconsin-Madison representatives committed their ongoing support to the agriculture program for Vincent High School students and called for other community partners to join them in supporting the growth of the program. The current agriculture program at Vincent has ties to the school’s origins. Vincent, which sits on a large plot of land on the city’s northwest side, was originally built in the 1970s as an agriculture high school. The revived program began in 2012 with an introduction to agriculture class and has grown since then. Agriculture may sound like an unusual choice for a big-city high school, but the expansive campus, and more importantly, significant career opportunities in the field, make for a strong match. Food science, for example, can help students prepare for the nearly 15,000 jobs in the Milwaukee region tied to food and beverage manufacturing. The economic impact agriculture has in Wisconsin is $88.3 billion. This school year, every new ninth-grade student will take an Introduction to Agricultural Sciences course connecting students to the four agriculture “pathways” now offered at the school: animal systems, plant systems, food products and processing systems and environmental service systems. All the agricul-

Students with Wisconsin's agriculture secretary, Ben Brancel. tural pathways help students build the skills needed for in-demand science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and the skills needed for success in most any career as well as in college and in life. The school has a number of facilities that support its agriculture curriculum, including a greenhouse, animal room, landscape equipment, apiary, outside gardens, aquaponics and outdoor study areas. “Whether students plan to enter the workforce immediately after high school or plan to attend college, career and technical education programs like Vincent’s offers students an opportunity to learn more about different career options,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver. “We thank UW-Madison’s commitment to build on the foundation we’ve created for the agriculture program at Vincent.” UW-Madison provides

support for Vincent’s program through funding from a five-year USDA Coordinated Agricultural Projects program, which was awarded in 2013. The program funds a full-time coordinator who develops the school’s agricultural curriculum. This year, the grant also will fund a consulting engagement with the retired principal of Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences to advise program leaders on the development of additional curriculum. Partnership opportunities

include financial support, assistance with curriculum development, donation of equipment or mentoring for students in the program. For more information about Vincent High School’s program or to enroll, visit mpsmke.com/EnrollMPS. To learn more about ways to partner with the agriculture program, contact Eric Radomski, MPS Career and Technical Education Program Manager, at (414) 4758391 or radomsej@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.

How parents can talk to their children about police violence, trauma and growing up black By Ruthie Hawkins I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been avoiding these tough conversations with my children. One is a 3-yearold, extremely inquisitive and aware. The other, 9-yearsold, is an empath at heart. I recently linked up with Angela Adams Ali, Ph.D., a psychologist and clinical therapist based in Chicago who specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy, for a few pointers. If you’re anything like me, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the constant bombardment of racially fueled headlines: “Baltimore Police Shoot, Kill Woman Holding Boy” “Minnesota Police Shoot Philando Castile During Traffic Stop” “Police Killed More Than 100 Unarmed Black People in 2015” “Louisiana Father of Five Alton Sterling Fatally Shot by Police” While guarding my kids from news reports, I edu-

cate them that guns are very dangerous and never to be touched, as well as tailor my discussions to their developmental understanding to avoid creating anxiety and possible night terrors. Ali suggests that honesty is the best policy when discussing racially fueled topics with children, even if it “may hurt them.” “Kids look to their parents to ensure they are safe. For example, if there is a lot of fighting or unrest in a household, that can actually

traumatize the children. The same applies when it comes to events occurring outside the house,” Ali tells BlackDoctor.org. So, how does one approach schooling our little ones on growing up Black in America? “While I can’t say don’t react [to recent shootings, police harassment, watching family getting dragged away in handcuffs] – this is an emotional time for everyone in Black America. Children need comfort. There has to be balance,” said Ali on prac-

ticing “calm” when discussing police inflicted trauma with our legacies. Now, in the event a young child witnesses an event as heartbreaking as Castile’s killing or the recent killing of Korryn Gaines who was holding her son at the time, “professional therapy is a must,” continued Ali. In addition to comforting your children, Ali states it’s critical to “tell them the absolute truth,” when discussing police trauma, violence and racism. “Here’s the thing. There’s a lot of Whites [who] would like to believe this is a post racial society. There’s also a lot of Blacks [who] believe this is a post racial society. When in reality, it’s safe to say a 3-year-old today won’t even see a post racial society. There’s too much work to be done.” “So, while as parents our natural reaction is to protect our children from the ugly truth, children eventually grow up to learn the truth themselves. We truly only serve them when we are be-

ing honest: this is our history, this is the current situation and this is what racism is…” “Of course, growing up in diverse situations [for example, a mix friends at school] makes it difficult for them to process. They may come back like ‘well wait a minute this is my friend and we like each other.’ But at that point, it’s your responsibility to provide them with a broader example of racism,” continued Ali. “It’s for their own good.” Ali added, “It [knowing about racism] used to be important because well, ‘it’s your history’ but now knowing your history can save your life.” While this is just the foundation of an ongoing discussion, your bravery to begin it will plant a seed – one that may very well change our future. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

adults are sedentary for about six to eight hours a day,” said Deborah Rohm Young, chair of the AHA panel that wrote the new advisory. The problem only gets worse with age. “Adults 60 years and older spend between 8.5 to 9.6 hours a day in sedentary time,” Young said in an AHA news release. She directs behavioral research at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. One heart specialist said the new stance is justified. “Don’t be a ‘sitting duck for cardiovascular disease’ — move more, sit less,” said Dr. Barbara George, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Lifestyle Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. “All studies are indicating that moving more throughout the day — in addition to getting the recommended 30 minutes of moderate activity on a daily basis — is necessary to lower one’s risk of heart disease and other causes of mortality,” she said. According to the AHA, the new statement reflects growing evidence that, on its

own, exercise isn’t enough to counter sitting’s unhealthy effects. “Regardless of how much physical activity someone gets, prolonged sedentary time could negatively impact the health of your heart and blood vessels,” Young explained. And sitting impacts more than just heart disease risk, the AHA said. A sedentary lifestyle may also be associated with an increased risk of diabetes, impaired insulin sensitivity (linked to diabetes) and a higher risk of death from any cause, according to the new statement. The exact mechanisms behind the effect aren’t yet clear. “There are many important factors we don’t understand about sedentary time yet,” Young said. She stressed that, “the types of studies available identify trends but don’t prove cause and effect.” “We don’t have information about how much sedentary behavior is bad for health — the best advice at this time is to ‘sit less and move more,'” she added. How much more? According to the AHA, people should try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day to reach the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. That’s healthier than trying to cram their weekly exercise into one or two days, according to the statement
