Supporters raise a glass to 'Cheers! for PEARLS'
On Thursday, July 28, 2016 guests raised a glass in honor of the difference PEARLS For Teen Girls is making in the lives of Milwaukee's young women. The "Cheers! for PEARLS" fundraiser was hosted by MillerCoors V.P. Michelle Nettles at Fred’s Pub inside the company's Milwaukee headquarters. The keynote speaker was City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker, FACHE, who had a slew of pairings for Guests were invited to sample an assortment of MillerCoors beverages and snakes.The event raised more than $16,000 through donations and raffle ticket sales. PEARLS is a non-profit leadership development program for girls in grades 5-12th that served 1,603 girls in 2015. Of the girls who participate in the program, 90 percent graduated high school; 99.9 percent of girls chose not to get pregnant, and 89 percent are on track for post-secondary success. Russ Feingold visits the Milwaukee Urban League

Former Senator Russ Feingold (center, left), a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, met with members of the Milwaukee Urban League on Thursday, July 28, 2016. The visit was part of a larger tour that Senator Feingold is undertaking in an effort to
listen to the priorities and concerns of Wisconsinites in all 72 counties. The Milwaukee Urban League works to provide essential services and other support to help African Americans achieve their full potential and participate in the social mainstream.
Rain would not deter the 14th Annual Summer of Peace Youth Rally

The 14th Annual Summer of Peace Youth Rally took place on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Martin Luther King Peace Place, located at N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive and W. Ring St. The event theme was “Promote the Positive" and despite the rain, kicked off with community parades gathering at N. 5th and W. Locust (Peace Park & Garden) and at N. 9th and W. Ring (We Got This Garden). Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs (center) who was one of the sponsors of the rally, lead the parade participants through the city. Alderwoman Coggs praised the rally’s organizers and encouraged public support and participation in Friday’s event. “I commend our young people for their efforts toward peace, and the rally is a positive outlet for them and for the community,” she said. For the past fourteen years, the Summer of Peace Initiative has provided a platform for young people to explore and express solutions to quality of life issues, especially the levels of violence in their communities.
