Russ Feingold hosts community BBQ in Sherman Park

Wisconsin U.S. Senate Democratic Candidate Russ Feingold hosted a community barbecue at Sherman Park on Saturday, September 17, 2016. The event featured food, music, bounce houses and other entertainment for families. Feingold was received warmly by a crowd estimated by organizers at more than 300 and took questions from many of the guests. At least 100 were still present after the official close of the event. The event was an opportunity for local residents to interact with the candidate about issues of concern in a relaxed setting. Several local organizations also spoke about the community, both positive aspects as well as things that need improving. The groups joining Feingold included Wisconsin Jobs Now, Citizen Action of Milwaukee and Urban Underground.

300+ Strong movement hosts "2nd Annual Community Rally" at Sherman Park

A collective of grassroots and youth serving organizations staged the second annual 300+ Strong Community Rally at Sherman Park from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016. The 300+ Strong Movement was launched last year to address the unique challenges and realities black youth face in Milwaukee. The effort to provide support to youth connected Milwaukee’s "We Got This" initiative, Running Rebels, Be the Change and Universal Companies. Together they have identified some 300-plus youth, mostly black males, coming through their doors on a regular basis. Since 2015, the group has expanded to include and collaborate with other black-led organizations and initiatives working with black youth in Milwaukee’s hardest hit neighborhoods. “300+ Strong is an example of how we begin to turn the page from the things we’ve encountered this summer and the last three weeks, and is a central component to the city’s commitment to ensuring public safety,” said Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton. “Events such as the rally provide the necessary venue for communication and for nurturing these important neighborly bonds that can help us build a stronger district and a more vital city,” said Alderman Khalif Rainey whose 7th Aldermanic District includes Sherman Park and the surrounding neighborhood.

The biggest “birther”of all - Donald Trump By Urban Media News Staff Since the election of America’s first African American president, Barack Obama, fringe figures across the United States have sought to undermine his legitimacy. From describing his sense of “otherness” to questioning whether or not he was born in the United States, every so-called “birther” argument has reeked of race-based disparagement. As his historic presidency winds down and the battle for his successor wages, President Obama’s birthplace is in the news yet again due to the biggest “birther” of them all – Republican nominee for president Donald Trump. For at least the last six years, Trump has loudly and frequently sought to undermine President Obama’s legitimacy, falsely claiming that he was not born in the United States and therefore was ineligible to serve as Commander-in-Chief. Even after President Obama released his long form birth certificate, proving unequivocally that he was born in Hawaii, Trump has continued to lie about the President’s birthplace. He falsely claimed the birth certificate was a forgery, and

even encouraged hackers to break the law in a desperate effort to try to prove his false claims. Recently, Trump tried to erase his sordid history leading the “birther” movement by finally stating that, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period.” The mere fact that a major party nominee for president had to utter those words in the final 60 days before an election is astonishing – unless you consider Trump’s long history of seeking to undermine President Obama’s legitimacy. Rather than acknowledge the error of his ways and admit to lying about the President’s eligibility to serve, Trump used the occasion of his announcement that President Obama was born in Hawaii to tell an even bigger lie. He now falsely claims that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, “started” the birther movement. Every major news outlet in America has debunked this latest falsehood. Hillary Clinton and her campaign did not start, and did not peddle the false conspiracy clung to so desperately by right wing opponents which posited for years that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. ate candidates for public office sometimes say desperate things. But there is no excusing Trump’s attempt to obscure his own history of lying about the nation’s first President of color by accusing anyone else of birtherism. What does President Obama think of Trump’s latest antics? According to Politico, in an appearance before the Congressional Black Caucus Obama declared that he would consider it “a personal insult, an insult to my legacy” if minority turnout falters for Hillary Clinton. With the election officially underway – early voting in Wisconsin began in some communities September 19 – communities of color must now decide whether or not to send a message at the ballot box to those like Donald Trump who have sought to undermine the legitimacy of our first non-white President. Early voting begins in Madison and Milwaukee on Monday, September 26 at a variety of polling locations. To learn where to vote, how to register, and what to bring with you to your polling place, visit www.myvote.wi.gov.

Rebuilding Our Community

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special to the Milwaukee Times

Causality We will be hard pressed to look at 2016 in Milwaukee as just an average year in the city. The year began with great promise and potential, especially considering the new innovations, business startups, expanded growth and new construction projects. It certainly has been a busy year so far in those terms; but what started out as a great year has also uncovered a growing list of underlying social and community issues. On one hand we see buildings rising from the ground that are reshaping the Milwaukee skyline. We see new enterprises, partnerships, ribbon cuttings and the ex-

pansion of highways and bypasses in and around the city that are helping to make it easier and safer to travel. In addition, we see the new bold construction initiatives of suburban communities that are simply capturing the minds of a new generation. Some of these projects include new housing, schools and shopping squares. However, on the other hand, it is clear that some things have not changed at all. It is just not the riot that resulted in businesses being lost, a neighborhood shaken, an increasing number of drug overdoses, ongoing gun violence, high unemploy-

ment of young black men and youth, limited access to health care and growing poverty. Some of these things have been going on for decades. And for a new generation that has been greatly impacted by recent events, they are now feeling the effects of the long term flawed policies of the past as well as a lack of vision.

LoveKindness There are a number of words we use to describe the people we know that can range from being positive to nasty. But, here we are with our children and grandchildren already back to school. Some have returned to the same school while others are attending a new school. Just remember how nervous you were as you looked forward to a new experience and how much you wanted to fit in. Being popular was important as we encountered a whole new group of classmates. Perhaps even more worrisome was the fear that we might be singled out for some characteristic and receive a nickname that would

Schools that Love Kindness

hurt every time it was used. The political campaigns are using hurtful words to describe their opponents and these are being reported in the news daily. How do you think this influences children’s thinking when those who claim to be leaders regularly use these hurtful words? Does the school your children attend teach character and behavior as being truly important? In his column we have talked about the importance of kindness. Actually we have stated that our need to Love Kindness may be the most important personal behavior we can learn. What will it take for our schools to single out kind

The shame of it all is that some of these effects can be prevented if only the root causes are addressed in time. We also know that when there is little to no work done in prevention, something will happen sooner or later that will get our full attention. It is within these unique moments that there is a need to look and deal with real causes before they turn into events that can get out of sight and out of mind. For it is one process that creates an opening for another process and it is that process that can cause more damage in the long run and that leads to unthinkable outcomes.

behavior as being worthy of public acknowledgement? So far one MPS school has adopted a Love Kindness program where awards are given out on a regular basis and annual awards are presented at the awards ceremony. This pilot program has been making a difference as bulletin boards provide daily awareness that this is regarded as being central to quality education.

It is not enough to condemn bullying unless you also reward kindness. How is the bully to know what other behavior is regarded as being more important unless we are willing to identify and reward those who are kind? If we can begin in our schools then we can begin to live in a community that does indeed Love Kindness. We have the material and the resources needed to support an awards program in any school that might want to install a Love Kindness program. We already have a successful MPS program to use as an example. As you complete your back-to-school preparations

What’s the plan? The world must be coming to an end. African American athletes are using their power and influence to create social change. High school athletes are refusing to stand during the National Anthem. In the NFL players are bonding together to open the world’s eyes to injustice in the USA. All these things are positive steps. But, what is the ultimate goal for these protests? I think it’s kind of cool to watch people get upset when they see sports figures refuse to stand during the National Anthem. Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the National Anthem has been adopted by other NFL players. The prize slaves are rewww.milwaukeetimesnews.com

volting. I almost cried laughing as I watched a Caucasian man complain about the NFL. “I won’t watch that garbage because of the protest. That type of thing won’t happen in baseball,” this man announced with force. I grinned openly and hard at his discomfort. Is this the goal of the protest, to bring a smile to my Pro Black face? Let’s get down to cases. What is the ultimate goal for this so-called revolt? I have heard people scream about stopping social injustice. That sounds good but what is the plan? What steps are needed and where is the starting point? I think the long awaited awakening of

the professional athlete is great. The unity shown by the NFL players is a step. But a step where? Is the ultimate goal to stop all social injustice in the USA? If so where is the beginning? Luckily, I have a plan. First, the African American community has to stop self-murder. The murder rate in the African American

community has to drop by at least 80 percent. If African Americans want social injustice to stop they have to treat each other better. Once the USA observes African Americans caring for each other, they will start to care. Second, African Americans have to purge their own neighborhoods. It’s time to use those crime hotlines to rid the community of foolish predators. This is one time the police can come in handy for the African American community. Everyone in the neighborhood knows who the criminals are. Why not make a few extra dollars getting rid of them? You can’t have a loving commu-

nity with criminals patrolling the streets. The criminals are what bring the police into the community; so if you want the police gone, give up the criminals. Refocus on education. It’s time to start cleaning out inner city schools. The school is a place of learning, not a babysitter. Parents need to stress education to their child early and often. Having more African American children in special ed isn’t going to change anything for the better. It’s time for many parents to take a hard look at what they have birthed and deal with it accordingly. Many students are not made (Continued on pg. 4)

What's the plan? (Continued from pg. 3) to sit in school and need to start learning a trade as early as possible. Parents need to use the protest to demand more vocational training in middle and high schools. Stop whining to the government about saving you. Stop talking about Black Lives Matter and start showing it. Quit begging the US government to pass some form of legislation to save African Americans. Understand that the only things that can save African Americans are themselves. In short, African Americans need to stop running up to the big house crying for Boss to save them. The man freed African Americans in 1865 so start acting like it. Be free people and take control of your own destiny. Kudos to the prize slaves that have taken a stand for justice. Now it’s up to the field hands to be worthy of the sacrifice and carry the day. After all there are only a couple thousand NFL players but 42 million African Americans. Thank you for speaking honestly about our African American community for more than 25 years; first on WMCS-AM (1290), and since 2015 on WNOV-AM (860). Your voice, perspective and determination to build bridges within Milwaukee will be sorely missed, but your voice and wisdom will long be remembered.

MPS, Bartolotta Restaurants gala event expands culinary arts education Restaurants provide one in 10 Wisconsin jobs. This fall, Milwaukee Public Schools and its partners will expand a culinary arts program to build broad career readiness skills needed for post-high school success and connect students to restaurant and hospitality industry opportunities. Later this month, the community will have opportunity to support this program through a gala event at one of Milwaukee's most beautiful venues. Entrée to Excellence, hosted by MPS and the Bartolotta Restaurants, features food and wine pairings prepared by award-winning Bartolotta culinary staff. The event takes place on Wednesday, September 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Discovery World, and funds raised will aid in the transformation of home economics classrooms at four MPS high schools into true culinary

Turnaround Arts increases student achievement using an integrated arts model. According to a national research organization, over a four year period, Turnaround Arts schools in other districts experienced on average a 12.6 percent improvement in reading proficiency and a 22.5 percent improvement in math proficiency. In addition, attendance increased and suspensions decreased following the implementation of Turnaround Arts programs. In Milwaukee, Turnaround Arts focuses on three key areas:

• Additional professional development for arts educators and arts integration education; • Integration of the five arts disciplines – visual arts, music, dance, theater and media arts – within all content area classrooms; and • Working with the district’s arts partners to provide both in-school and after-school enrichment programs. Many of Milwaukee’s arts partners are part of the Turnaround Arts effort, including Arts @ Large, Danceworks, First Stage Children’s Theater, Black Arts Think Tank, Express Yourself Milwaukee, Still Waters Collective, Florentine Opera, H2O, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the University of Wisconsin-Peck School of the Arts. In addition, UWM and Cardinal Stritch, through a grant from the Margaret Cargill Foundation, are partnering with MPS to recruit, train and provide ongoing support for MPS arts educators. Nationally, Turnaround Arts is made possible through a collaboration of government agencies, nonprofit partners, corporate and private partners. Locally, the MPS Foundation coordinated support from the Herzfeld Foundation and the Zilber Family Foundation for the Milwaukee Public Schools’ Turnaround Arts effort.

Five items we never buy from the grocery store As a mother and a wife, I go to the grocery store quite often. For everything on a huge grocery list or some quick ingredients I forgot for a dish, the grocery store (unfortunately) sees me a lot. But that’s good for you. Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about my neighborhood grocery store and big box chain grocery stores. For you and your family’s health, here are items you should never buy. 1.) Name brand spices How did spices at the grocery store get so expensive? Even basics like cinnamon and garlic powder seem to get pricier all the time — forget about the fancy stuff like saffron and whole vanilla beans. Consumer Reports ran a blind taste test using pricey namebrand spices versus cheaper generic versions in different recipes, and asked tasters to compare them. For the most part, the tasters couldn’t tell them apart. “You don’t need to spend more unless the spice is the main attraction,” Consumer Reports said in this video. It also has to do with the packaging and date of the spice. As long as the spice hasn’t been on the shelves for long periods of time and are

packed in a sealed container, most grocery store spices are the same. Here’s a better idea: Skip the grocery store spices completely and head to the nearest health-food store where spices are sold in bulk. Buy those spices that you use most often and keep them in a sealed ziploc-style bag at home — it’s much cheaper and keeps your spices fresher. Another option is to grow your own herbs and have a supply of fresh basil, oregano and thyme always on hand. 2.) Anything sold in the checkout line. Candy, magazines, cubeshaped breath mints covered in flavor crystals (who eats those besides kids anyway?), tiny packages of mixed nuts– these encapsulate the epitome of the impulse buy. Such individual tidbits are priced far higher than their bulk counterparts found a mere few aisles back. Why? Because they are what grocery store execs call at the “point of purchase.” Once you’re in that line, it’s hard for a consumer to get out of line and go somewhere else in the store just to get an item. So all those items in the checkout are impulse buys. Meaning you buy

them because of what you’re feeling right then (hungry, thirsty, interested, etc). Plus, let’s be honest, if you didn’t buy it before you got to the checkout lane, you probably don’t actually need it. 3.) Food that’s already cooked If someone else cooked it, you’re going to pay for that service with almost no exceptions. Frozen dinners, prepared hot meals, salad bars, packaged sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, and the like are all more expensive than their raw component parts. Now that’s not to say there’s no place for the occasional packaged/pre-made meal in the home, but on average, most of the pre-made meals have way too much sodium, too much fat and aren’t

seasoned the way you like in the first place. You usually get them for convenience. To make eating at home easier, plan your meals and then cook them late at night or early in the morning to get them out of the way of your work day. 4. Lunch-ables I know we’re going to get a lot of flack for this one, but Men’s Health magazine named them as one of the worst snacks in America. They were specifically speaking about the deep-dish pepperoni pizza Lunchables, which it says has “a back label that reads like a chemistry textbook.” The “meal” if you want to call it that, is 500 calories, with a whopping 890 milligrams of sodium and 28 grams of sugar. That’s more than your child should consume all day.

Other Lunchables packs have less sugar and fewer calories, but in many cases the healthier alternative is a homemade turkey sandwich or leftover pasta. And get this, it’s cheaper to make it yourself! 5. “Light” breads It’s nearly impossible to find bread at the store without added sugars, artificial colors and GMOs – which is interesting since it only takes 4 ingredients to make bread. But I say all that to say, not all is lost. There are breads that still give you what you need and want: healthy grains and taste. However, most of the “light” breads don’t. Those breads that claim to be less in calories, etc., have other fillers to make them that way. So, try to stick to sprouted grain breads or gluten-free varieties that are made up of primarily seeds and healthy grains. One hundred percent whole grain is mostly good, but check the ingredients list on that one too. Another alternative if you are watching the bread you eat, start using only half the bread. Make an open-faced sandwich (only one slice of bread). You’ll most likely feel lighter on your feet and have a little bit more energy.

I would be interested in this idea if I was suddenly single after a lifetime of roommates and a husband, because I can imagine it would be difficult to live on my own after always having companionship. Searching for just the right situation would not be easy, but Roommates4Boomers would simplify it. With detailed information on the profile of each user, potential roommates can narrow down their choices. There are questions on topics ranging from cleanliness to political beliefs, with a 4-star rating for how important a topic is to the applicant. For example, I work at home, so I would prefer to have a roommate who goes to work each day, giving me the quiet I need to get my job done. As the $10 billion sharing economy continues to grow, shared housing will also continue to increase among the middle-aged and senior citizens. The boomer population is aging, and women may decide that living in a senior community is not what they want, but being alone isn’t a good choice, either. Home sharing is an excellent compromise, ensuring companionship and security, especially if there is a health or personal emergency. With living expenses extremely high in some of the country's biggest cities, Roommates4Boomers offers the chance to stay in a beloved home while reducing the monthly costs. Roommates4Boomers is available in every state except North Dakota and Montana.
