Gilbert Brown Foundation offers 11th Annual All-Pro Football Camp

The Gilbert Brown Foundation and the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers teamed up once again to hold a free football camp for Milwaukee youth at North Division High School from Tuesday, July 12 to Thursday, July 14, 2016. This was the eleventh year that retired Green Bay Packer nose tackle Gilbert Brown offered the All-Pro Football Camp in Wisconsin.

“Through the All-Pro Football Camp, we hope to not only teach kids the skills they need to succeed on the football field, but give them life building skills as well,” said Brown. “The camp is one of the highlights of my year, and I was excited to offer it again in 2016 for the eleventh year.”

Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp was open to children between the ages of 8 and 17. Over the years, Gilbert's high level of play, warm personality, and the instant connection he made with Packer fans have made him an icon in Wisconsin. Gilbert still finds time to reach out to his fans and supporters in many ways. Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp is another example of his commitment to community and service.

Milwaukee City Hall hosts UNCF 'Walk for Education' registration event On Wednesday, July 13, 2016 the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) hosted a registration event for their upcoming "Walk for Education" at the rotunda of the Milwaukee City Hall building. The event was hosted by the Milwaukee Common Council and Mayor Tom Barrett to create a buzz and sign up volunteers for the upcoming 32nd Year Anniversary 'Walk for Education' to be held at Veterans Park on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. The annual event is a celebration of education that will bring together an estimated 2,000 community supporters to raise needed funds to help local students attend and graduate from college. Mayor Barrett dedicates new Bublr Bike station in inner city

New station is the first in new nationwide program

Mayor Tom Barrett and other participants are taught how to unlock and replace the Bublr bicycles from one of the newest stations located at 6th and Reservoir streets at a dedication on July 8.

With the expansion of the Bublr Bike Share Partnership into low-income Milwaukee communities and discounted annual passes costing just $8, the event at the Lapham Place Senior Citizen Center on July 8, presided over by Mayor Tom Barrett, was a celebration of community building.

Mayor Barrett, representatives from Bublr Bikes and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM), along with about 50 local youth and adult residents, gathered at the corner of Reservoir and Sixth streets to learn how to use the new bike sharing station, one of the first in the inner city.

"Children have an inalienable right to bicycle riding," Mayor Barrett said in his dedication remarks, adding that being able to travel around Milwaukee would give young people a better chance to expand their horizons and see all that the city has to offer.

By the end of the year the city aims to have 58 stations installed throughout the city.

Bublr Bike Share users can return a bike to any station, and with baskets and chain guards the bikes are also useful for adults commuting or running errands, according to HCAM Communications Director Paul Williams.

recently were awarded a $64,000 grant from Better Bike Share Partnership to support the work of making the bike sharing stations available throughout the city.

Williams said the city plans to install a total of 100 stations and 800 bikes. The Bublr Bikes system is a public private/partnership between the City of Milwaukee and Bublr Bikes, with additional support from many other public and private partners.

HACM provides high-quality, affordable housing options to more than 10,000 Milwaukee families, senior citizens and disabled adults.

The nonprofit group Africans in Milwaukee is reviving the annual African Picnic to share food and culture, set for July 23 in Brown Deer Park.

The potluck picnic will be from 2 to 9 p.m. at the park, 7853 N. Green Bay Road, with African artists and musicians, African poetry reading and tribal fashion show.

Besides African dishes brought by attendees, African restaurants and caterers will have food on hand for sampling.

The sponsor said countries represented at the event so far include Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Uganda, South Africa, Congo, Burundi, Togo, Benin, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The event also will have face painting, a carnival for children and soccer game for adults.

The African Picnic is free.

Rebuilding Our Community

Finding our way through It’s been a rough year already in terms of gun violence in America and it's only July. At this rate most major cities across America will surpass historical records on gun deaths. With each passing day some kind of gun violence event captures the news headlines and before long the event has gone “viral” on social media. Getting any kind of positive media coverage on any notable program is hard when there is an event that involves a weapon, especially a gun. As one person recently cited, “If it bleeds, it leads.”

In the wake of so must recent national violence many elected officials, activists, religious leaders and good cit-

izens are at a loss on what is occurring in their communities. Some suggest that as a nation we are at a “tipping point” on gun violence and gun ownership. Trying to get a handle on underlying issues or to just begin to understand what is going on is a perplexing endeavor. Of course every community is different; share some similarities, but the challenges on how to deal with gun rights laws, drug abuse and mental illness are not unique to any community alone. We are all sharing in this struggle.

Revolutionary shortcomings I have heard some interesting things in the past ten years. I once heard that the world was coming to an end because of a mathematical equation. I heard that fluoride in the drinking water was for mind control purposes.

I recently heard something that had me laughing. I heard an African American talking about revolution.

Tears came to my eyes when I heard an African American man stating the revolution was coming and race traitors were going to pay. These were not tears of joy but of laughter. I found the statement and the lecture the man was giving comedy at best. I wiped my eyes, then went and interrupted his speech. “Who are the sell-outs?” I asked. The man proceeded to name the usual suspects, the token Afri-

can American. I interjected, “Does this include the idiot thug who brings the community down?” The man just looked at me.

The African American woman that the man was talking to looked at me with interest. I went on, “You are talking about fighting a war; what army fights with sick soldiers?” The guy started sputtering, “Once African Americans bond togeth-

er…” I cut him off. “Bro, before you bond with anything or anyone you have to bond with yourself. Furthermore African Americans need a purge before they can do anything.” I then walked away. I understood what was going on and why. The man watched too much television.

The Revolution. Ah, how sweet those words sound to a militant mindset. I can hear the rhetoric from ages

gone by as if it were days past all over. “I’m no longer accepting the things I cannot change, I’m changing the things I cannot accept.” Angela Davis said this statement in regards to African American plight.

With that in mind, what is happening around the USA today shouldn’t shock anyone. African Americans never changed the things they claimed they couldn’t accept.

In return, after almost 200 years of so-called freedom, African Americans are still facing the same issues.

Police killings are nothing new in the USA. Police kill a high number of both white and black males in the USA. There is one statement that groups like Black Lives Matter need to address before confronting the cops.

African Americans kill African Americans. The culture of African Americans in the USA is one of self-destruction. The music industry that African Americans have created is fashioned on black-on-black violence. If African American lives are worthless to African Americans, why should anyone else hold them in value?

Huey Newton once said, “Too many so-called leaders of the movement have been made into celebrities and their revolutionary fervor destroyed by mass media.” If you look at television today this statement rings true. The masses of people are looking to glory hounds for leadership. The old make-a- stand; go-to-court-and-be-prose-

cuted blueprint has never created a successful leader.

If African Americans were honest they would realize preachers haven’t been very great at leading. No one is bashing Martin Luther King Jr., so calm down. The point is that the people on television are just that, people talking on television. If they were really going to change African American destiny, would Caucasian-owned networks make them famous?

“Any person who is extolling African Americans to use violence against the government in 2016 is an Agent Provocateur.” This was the last thing I told the African American male and female.

There are countless programs in place in the USA to detain unruly populations of people. Go to the Internet and Google "concentration camps in the USA." I know you can’t believe everything on the World Wide Web. In this game of life and death, freedom or incarceration, can African Americans take the risk?

Community violence and its impact on our children: Media Violence (Part 2) This month this column is focusing on a troubling topic: community violence and its impact on our children. A review was published in the Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review (Springer, 2009) which focused on community violence and its effect on youth. This writer owes a great deal of intellectual debt to the Springer report for its research and academic labor, which served as an appropriate guide in preparation of these articles.

For the purpose of this article series, “violence” is defined as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person or against a group or community that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, or deprivation.

“Children” is any individual who is not yet an adult who is directly or indirectly exposed to violence that poses a real threat or a perceived threat to the individual’s or an affiliated person’s life or bodily integrity.

There are several types of

community violence. The form that has been researched the longest is media violence.

Caregivers in the research on the effects of media violence have stated they do not watch local television news, nor do they allow their children to do so, for fear of hearing reports of harm befalling a family member or acquaintance. Studies in Chicago schools indicate that more than 70 percent of the shooting incidents youth witnessed involved a friend or family member as the victim; about 10 percent were a sibling or a parent. (Jenkins and Bell 1994; Uehara et al. 1996) The form of exposure to community violence that has received the most recent attention in the U.S. is war/terrorism or “world” violence.

For example, the media coverage of the Iraq War provided Americans (families

and children) the experience of war in real time. Researchers have suggested that there is a dosage effect regarding children’s exposure to violence in the media; the more exposure through television, the more post-traumatic stress symptoms they experience. (Lorion 1998) Children may be affected by war or terrorism, not only through the media, but also by disruptions or changes in their regular routines at school and in other activities. Additionally, knowing or seeing an adult who has been upset or affected about an attack may affect children. (Stuber

et al. 2002) What is the impact of war/terrorism on the emotional, behavioral, and academic functioning of American children? This question is difficult to answer for American youth, as there are likely cohort effects. For example, following the 911 terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, DC, American children were widely exposed to “world” violence, and later initiation of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. These events exposed American youth to world violence not only through the media (e.g., news reports), but also through hearsay from military personnel (e.g., friends, relatives).

Ten ways to fight summer brain drain

It’s time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in our lives and community.

• Summer camp: Whether you are looking for a day camp or a summer sleep away camp, there are many specialty camps – science, math, art, music and computers, among many others – that feed specific interests and have academics built into the program.

• Get ahead of the game: Schedule time to meet with your child’s current teacher or teacher for the next grade, to learn specific topics that the child should work on.

Whether mastering skills learned during the previous school year or getting a head start on upcoming lessons, the summer is a great time to develop skills.

you head out of town, find out what the destination has to offer and take advantage of the educational activities.

Visiting historic sites and landmarks is a great way to teach children about history and geography.

• Plan a day trip: Schedule a day trip to a museum, zoo or farm. Interactive activities like these are a great way to promote learning and spending a day at a new place is exciting and often memorable for children.

• Gaming and instruments: There are millions of video games and apps available to download on your phone, tablet or computer, and many provide great educational benefits. Spend some time researching games and apps that are best suited for both the learning needs and interests of your chil-

The lazy days of summer are here and for most students it means trading in books and calculators for beach towels and video games. But, neglecting numbers and novels often leads to the dreaded summer brain drain. The result?

A sharp decline in students’ academic skills, and a widening of the achievement gap.

According to various studies, students typically lose up to two months of learning during the summer and instructors spend the first couple of months re-teaching what was learned last school year rather than introducing new concepts. From hopeless to hopeful: Nine things we can do right now to start healing Source: BlackDoctor.org There seems to be an overwhelming sense of fear in the air.

Fear from both Black and white. Between police men and women and citizen. Between the young generation and old. Between churgoers and the un-churched. With pretty much anybody. People are afraid for their families and afraid for the next generation. But the worst thing about this kind of fear is, it can be paralyzing and make you feel hopeless, and even unwanted. It can keep you from doing what can and needs to be done.

But a wise man once said, “The only thing to fear is fear itself.”

Of course there will be protests and anger, but what specifically are we DOING besides just talking about it, and posting about it for someone else to read? Let’s turn all those feelings – grief, hate, worry, anger, frustration and fear – into action.

Here are some concrete, REAL things you and I can do right now to combat what’s going on: Donate money. There are a number of people dead now: from Alton Sterling, police officers, Philando Castile, and even some innocent bystanders who have families, young children and who are hurting. Many of them have donation pages so that you can support their families financially. Put your money where your mouth or your post is. Everyone is talking about how “bad” it is, but many of those folks are just talking.

Let’s do something good and share your knowledge, your love, your passion with the next generation. Love your family. Many people say that because of the recent killings they are calling their family and children more or checking on friends and family that they haven’t talked to in awhile.

Instead of waiting for another tragedy, keep in contact now, call your family now, spend more time with them now. There’s no time like the present.

Be creative. For some, writing or being creative is therapeutic. Use your voice to create what your heart is telling you. Get out what you need to get out on paper, in a song, on video. Let your voice be heard creatively.

Plan. Many people feel frustrated because they feel as though they don’t have a voice — we don’t have a voice. So what is the plan to make sure we do have a voice? Is it changing the law?

Does the change lie in the local police department? If so, how do you see it changing?

Does it lie with the government? If so, who will you need to talk to to change it?

Do you even know your local government officials? Have you spoken them about what you want your local agenda to be so that they can fight on your behalf ? Does it lie with getting more Black ofForm coalitions and ficials elected? If so, what partnerships.

Twelve summer safety tips for the elderly

Prepare yourself or older friends and family members for the sweltering summer months.

The summertime is a time of fun and relaxation for most people. But for seniors, the heat and sun can be dangerous if the proper precautions aren't taken. Here are some great tips that the elderly, as well as their caregivers, can use to make sure they have a fun, safe summer.

Stay hydrated Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they lose their ability to conserve water as they age. They also can become less aware of their thirst and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes. Remember to drink water often, and be sure to pack some for those long summer drives.

Dr. William Greenough, of Johns Hopkins Geriatric Center, says that caregivers should make sure seniors are drinking sweat replacement products (that contain salt and potassium) to replace water they lose during the summer.

Talk to your doctor Check with your medical team to make sure any med-

ications you are on won't be affected by higher temperatures -- especially if you don't have air conditioning in your home.

Some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature (approximately 78 degrees Fahrenheit), and the last thing anyone wants is for a preventable medical condition to become aggravated due to high temperatures.

Keep your cool Even small increases in temperature can shorten the life expectancy for seniors who are coping with chronic medical conditions.

Shopping malls, movie theaters and libraries provide welcome, cool spaces if a senior’s own home isn’t air conditioned. They also af-

ford a great opportunity to get out of the house and get some exercise, without the exhaustion of the heat. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to inquire if there are any programs to assist seniors with fewer resources to get air conditioners. "Seniors are much more vulnerable to the harmful effects of heat, as their bodies do not adjust as well to sudden changes in temperature," shares Dr. Lubna Javed of HealthCare Partners Medical Group. Public Announcement for an Emergency Research Study of Cardiac Arrest Airways in Southeast Wisconsin Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin are studying which type of advanced airway method is better for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to use on a person having cardiac arrest.

Cardiac Arrest is a major public health problem. There are about 300,000 cardiac arrest cases in the U.S. every year and only about 10% of people survive. This study will compare two commonly used Advanced Airway methods for adults having a cardiac arrest. The study will begin August 2016 in southeast Wisconsin and include Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Services and Flight for Life.

We are currently conducting a computer-based treatment study for adults (ages 18-60) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Do you suffer from unwanted, uncontrollable, or repeated thoughts/behaviors?

• Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) • Compulsive hair pulling (Trichotillomania)

Because cardiac arrest is an emergency, this study meets the U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines for exception from informed consent under emergency circumstances.

Opting out of this study: Anyone who does not wish to be enrolled in this study may opt-out by wearing an optout bracelet or necklace. EMS providers are trained to not enroll anyone who is wearing this bracelet or necklace.
