CHILD WATCH

By: Marian Wright Edelman President of the Children's Defense Fund

Pondering the deeper meanings of this holy season

After all the shopping and preparation for celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa, I hope we will stop and sit and think more deeply about their meaning in our over commercialized, trivialized, mass selling mania for and to children and deeply stressful time for so many. The poor baby in a manger is lost along with the poor babies crying out all over America for food, shelter, safety, and education in the jingle of cash registers, and the Christian belief that God entered history as a poor child is drowned out in the jungle of commerce and advertising. Something is deeply awry in our nation with the world’s biggest economy that lets its children be the poorest group and the younger they are the poorer they are during their years of greatest brain development. The Prince of Peace is mocked as we let a child be injured or killed by guns every thirty minutes. The growing boy Jesus who pondered and studied His heavenly Father’s word would worry about the millions of children around America and the world growing up without an education – unable to read and compute – sentenced to social and economic death in a competitive and globalizing

economy, and in America, to a mass incarceration system that will turn back the clock of racial progress unless dismantled. Who are we and who do we want to be as Americans? What do we value? What values do we want to stand for and transmit to our children in our warring polarized world where the violence of poverty and guns snuff out the lives and dim the eyes and spirits of children and adults? I share here a few prayers for us to ponder as we enjoy our turkey and roast beef and prepare for a new year that I hope is joyful and fulfilling for all including those left behind. God, please stop injustice, the killing of innocent children by violence at home and in far away lands. God, please stop injustice, the killing of innocent children by poverty at home and abroad. God, please stop injustice, the assault on precious child dreams by neglect and apathy near and far. God, please stop injustice, so our children may live and love and laugh and play again. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation where small babies die of cold quite legally.

O God, forgive and transform our rich nation where small children suffer from hunger quite legally. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation where toddlers and school children die from guns sold quite legally. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation that lets children be the poorest group of citizens quite legally. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation that lets the rich continue to get more at the expense of the poor quite legally. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation which thinks security rests in missiles and in bombs rather than in mothers and in babies. O God, forgive and transform our rich nation for not giving You sufficient thanks by giving to others their daily bread. O God, help us never to confuse what is quite legal

with what is just and right in Your sight. God, is America’s dream big enough for me? For the little Black boy born the wrong color in the wrong place to the wrong parents in some folks’ sight? God, is America’s justice fair enough for me? For the little Brown or White girl labeled from birth as second best? God, is America’s economy open to us? For the many children who have to stay poor on the bottom so too few can stay rich on top? God, does America have enough for me in a land of plenty for some, but of famine for others? God, is America’s dream large enough for me? I who am poor, average, disabled, girl, Black, Brown, Native American, White? Is America for me? Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children's Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. What my daddy taught me about love and renewal By: Denene Millner Founder, MyBrownBaby.com Daddy lives in a quaint house in the same bucolic town, on the same country road, next door to the house in which he was born and raised. There is history there. His history. It dances in the rustle of the leaves on the grand oak that's stood sentry on the front yard since before he took his first breath, rolls on the hills he's walked since his days as a little boy -- colors the sunset that's settled each night, like a glorious picture show, just beyond the front porch, more than eight decades old. This is his home. It didn't always feel like mine. Daddy moved there shortly after my mother died, in search of the love, familial bond and comfort he needed when his wife of almost 40 years went away home. I remember the first time I visited him there: the tiny, two-bedroom house was nothing like the abode my parents made for my brother and me in Long Island -- a sprawling, two-story, threebedroom dwelling with a

two-car garage, a formal living room and a finished basement. Mommy insisted all the rooms be white; she believed deeply that color was meant for sofa pillows, bedspreads and tchotchkes on étagères, never walls. She also insisted that living room furniture was for company, not for grubby-handed kids or adults prone to just laying around. Mostly, everyone retreated to their own corners of our place. It was Bettye's house. Bettye's tastes. Bettye's rules. Daddy's house is different, though. The walls are a shock of red, gold and baby blue, and, with just two small bedrooms to work with, the place to be is the living room, whether family or guest, friend or foe. It is there that Daddy holds court: He serves snacks and drinks there, debates whether the Mets will ever have a place in the World Series there, folds his laundry there, naps while watching thrillers there. He is the ringmaster of his singleman circus. He's got his own way of living, his own way of entertaining, his own way of being -- a delicious sight to behold.

Denene Millner At no time was this more apparent than the first holiday we celebrated at Daddy's place. With my pots and pans and cooking appliances crowding the suitcases in the trunk and my two overly excited kids in tow -- the girls are, without a doubt, Papa Jimy's biggest fans -- we drove six hours from our place in Atlanta to what I was sure was going to be a cold, sterile affair I'd have to put my "mom back" into as I sought to reconstruct my mom's dinners, which were always these grand, elegant, lush affairs. In my mind's eye, I couldn't envision an easy, relaxed celebration. All I could see was hard work: planning and shopping and plenty of cooking to do, the proper dressing of the ta-

ble, slaving in service to the guests, without so much as a bite of food until everyone was well into their second helpings. See, orchestrating the holiday festivities was always my mother's domain. What did Daddy know about entertaining guests beyond sitting at the head of my mother's table, waiting for someone to pass the turkey, cranberry jelly and dinner rolls? As it turns out, Daddy knew plenty. When we walked into his place for the first time, we were jolted not only by the color and warmth of the place, but the work he'd already put into our first family affair without Mommy. Smoked turkey legs and collards, hand-washed and cut, already were simmering on the stove. Yams, sliced and dressed with copious amounts of brown sugar, butter, orange slices, cinnamon and nutmeg, sat on the counter, waiting their turn while four graham cracker-crusted sweet potato pies bubbled in the oven. The refrigerator was stocked with everything a home chef would need to dress a festive (Continued on pg. 5)

What daddy taught me

Rebuilding Our Community

(Continued from pg. 4)

By Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Special for the Milwaukee Times

A New Year wish It been quite a year so far, some days have been inspiring, some average, and while others have been days that no one would ever hope to come. On one hand, we have witnessed breakthroughs in medicine, research, science, exploration, athletics, and extraordinary human endeavors. Additionally, we have seen the rebound of various exchange markets to new all-time highs, expansion of health care for families, reinvestment in housing, increased business, new products, job creation and social reforms. However, on the other hand there have been days in which our hearts have been saddened by so many underlying issues that continue to go unaddressed because of political posturing and indifference. This includes more families living in poverty, lack of job training, underemployment, high incarceration rates among people of color, increased crime, escalation in gun violence, limits on immigration and drug use. The entire list of issues that need

addressing is alarming and are all worthy of more attention. It will be interesting to see where 2014 ranks among other years in the 21st Century. Will it be measured by what was gained, accomplishments, losses or by what we continue to avoid? Only time will tell. What I can say about this year is that it has been quite a journey of unbelievable highs and lows. From economic growth and advances in science and industry to the spread of worldwide terrorism, new diseases, the use of deadly force by law enforcement of unarmed people, increased public protests, political unrest, expanding wealth gap, and the search for a meaningful dialog about race in America. This year has been

some ride... of raw emotions, critical thinking, and flashbacks with historical footnotes. But as this holiday season draws to an end, it’s my hope that each of us wish for better days, changes of heart, sober thinking and true peace in our neighborhoods, cities, and nation and around the world. It will take all of us to make a difference in the upcoming New Year so that the mistakes of 2014 are not repeated and more progress can be made on all fronts. No holiday season is complete unless we take the time to remember those who are less fortunate and find ways to become engaged in making life better for all. We truly live in a land of opportunity and blessings. What do you think? Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, and Facebook. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd. Milwaukee 414-265-5546.

table for 10: ingredients for a decadent 11-cheese macaroni and cheese (Mommy's recipe), cornbread stuffing, fresh cranberry sauce, roasted lamb shanks, and Cornish hens with giblet gravy because, as it turns out, Daddy is not a fan of turkey. Who knew? There was no stress. I didn't have to try to step into my mother's size 10 shoes in a desperate attempt to recreate her magic. Turns out, Daddy had a bit of his own fairy dust, and he took great pleasure in wearing his own shoes -- doing things his way, in his house, as we created a new standard for holiday celebrations with our family. I learned so much about my father that year -- more, truly, than I had during the course of my lifetime with him. See, Daddy's always been a remarkable man with a huge heart. His hands tell the story -- those thick fingers and wrinkles and scars, and especially the calluses, speak to me. Remind me of how he always used his hands for the helping and the healing all the same. They are, and always have been, an intricate part of meeting the needs. If the boiler was broken or the

faucet was acting up, it was those hands that coaxed the heat and water back to life. If the car oil needed changing, it was his hands that would stroke all the lugs and bolts and hold the pan that caught the crude. Little kids, whether familiar or strangers to our driveway, could always count on those hands to fix a flat or an errant set of brakes. Always, he'd do these things with that laugh. Deep. Strong. Loud as thunder. I live(d) for that laugh, and always count(ed) on those hands. I'd fold my hand perfectly into his palm while we strolled through the mall, knocking back strawberry ice cream cones and handing over checks to pay bills, and picking up tools and "man stuff" for the shed in the backyard. I lived for Fridays, Daddy's day off. Best believe, riding shotgun in his Eldorado was where it was at. It was our time. And I watched his hands -- waited for them to give me the lessons. They weren't always obvious, but they never disappointed. This much I know. From them I learned honor and trust and patience, responsibility and truth and appreciation. Hard work. Selflessness. Struggle. Love. But with Daddy's first holiday as a widower, I learned something altogether new: that my father is capable of being his own man, with his own ideas and his own, independent way to just ... be. No longer is his role black and white: it is filled with color and light, and assures me, by example, that the only thing that is constant is history. The rustle of the leaves. The setting of the sun. The rolling of the hills. They stay the same. But life changes. It breathes as eagerly as those who choose to live it. Daddy didn't settle in. He grew and morphed and continues to daily. And so I embrace these new memories. The reminder that life is for the living. And I thank Daddy for the lesson. For that blessing.

Bulletin Board Board OKs additions for high-performing Montessori schools, reopening building for charter school

Superintendent also presents broad conceptual plan to continue work to expand high-demand, successful programs Additions are set to be built for Milwaukee Public Schools’ high-performing Fernwood Montessori and Maryland Avenue Montessori schools after the plan was approved Thursday, December 18, 2014 by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. The Board also approved reopening a school building as a third campus for a charter school that is demonstrating positive results. Fernwood and Maryland are both K3-8 schools rated ‘Exceeds Expectations’ on their state report cards with scores that rival and exceed many suburban schools. In Fernwood’s case, the expansion will reduce overcrowding in the building, allowing existing students to continue in the school through 8th grade. For Maryland, the addition will do the same and create a small number of new seats a few years from now.

The Board also approved a plan for the Howard Avenue Montessori School, which was opened to alleviate the waiting list at Fernwood, to serve students through 6th grade. Howard students can continue Montessori education at MacDowell Montessori School (K3-12) or Fernwood if room is available in the upper grades.

Universal Academy for the College Bound, which is too new to receive a traditional state report card, is rated ‘satisfactory progress,’ the higher of two possible ratings for new schools. The school, which will eventually serve students in grades K4-12, is planning to open a third campus this fall in the former Lee Elementary

New Year's resolution: Help your kids do well in school By: Rachael Walker It is a new year according to the calendar, but in most schools, we've just reached the half-way point. Resolve to be involved in your children's education in new ways this year. Studies show that kids whose parents are involved in their education have better grades, a better attitude toward school, and more appropriate school behavior than those with less involved parents. How do I get involved? Getting involved in your child's education can be as simple as talking with your child each day about school and homework. Your involvement could also include: • Visiting the classroom when you bring your child to school. • Establishing a homework routine and providing your child with a good place to study — away from distractions like TV, video games, the phone, or loud music. • Taking your child on trips, playing games together, and visiting the local library. • Showing you value education by taking classes yourself or letting your child see you spending time reading. • Volunteering at school to

ties you can do at home with your child. • Find out what's available to you at your school's parent resource center. What if my child doesn't like school? Lots of kids find school to be fun, stimulating, and a time to be with friends. But others experience a great deal of stress associated with school. To find out why your child seems unhappy with school: • Talk with your child and help in the classroom, library, listen carefully before you ofoffice, or on field trips. fer any solutions. • Attending school board • Arrange for a conference meetings and getting in- with the teacher. volved with a parent-teacher • Ask to observe your child organization. in class. • Reading to your child or • Talk with your school have him read to you every psychologist or school counday. selor about your child's feelWhat should I do if my ings about school. child isn't doing well in school? School. Enrollment for MPS schools begins with the Three-Choice process, which runs February 2-20. Families should enroll by Feburary 20 online at mpsmke.com/ enrollMPS or at schools for their best chance at their first-choice school. “Milwaukee Public Schools is responding to parents’ requests to expand programs that are successful and this action moves us forward on that important process,” MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver said. Examples of previous expansions of high-performing programs include the expansion of the top-rated Golda Meir School into the former Milwaukee Education Center site, the expansion of highly-ranked Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School at the former Sholes Middle School site and a new campus for the successful Carmen Schools of Science

and Technology at the former John Muir/Northwest Secondary site. Dr. Driver introduced a conceptual plan Thursday night that strategically outlines further district efforts to expand high-demand and successful programs. The plan includes Pathways Projects to expand highperforming schools and strengthen feeder patterns, Spotlight Projects to align and restore specialty programs and Community Cornerstone Projects to create, restore and expand programs that benefit students and the broader community. January is “National Glaucoma Awareness Month”

Local Eye MDs shed light on glaucoma diagnosis and treatment

By Cheryl L. Dejewski

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S., especially for African Americans. In fact, black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk of developing glaucoma than whites, and a recent study found that one in five black Americans age 75 and older has glaucoma. Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because the most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years—until severe permanent damage has already occurred. How can you protect yourself from losing sight to glaucoma? The partners at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that focuses on educating and caring for Milwaukee’s African American community, have an answer. They advise that you schedule regular eye exams to check for the disease and, if diagnosed, follow your doctor’s recommendations for scheduling laser treatment and/or using prescription medication eye drops. They also suggest you read the following information regarding glaucoma diagnosis, risks and treatment.

How glaucoma affects vision “Glaucoma is a condition in which fluid pressure in the eye affects the optic nerve, thus damaging how visual information is carried from the retina to the brain. Left untreated, it first causes loss of side vision and eventually all sight—permanently. The most common type is painless and progresses so slowly that most people don’t notice symptoms for years—until severe permanent damage has occurred,” explains Mark Freedman, MD, a partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading local ophthalmology practice that cares for tens of thousands of glaucoma patients.

When undetected and untreated, glaucoma can cause a gradual “tunneling” of vision that advances unnoticed until permanent sight loss occurs. Risk Factors Dr. Brett Rhode, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, lists the following risk factors for glaucoma: Age: Glaucoma is most common in adults over age 40, and the risk increases with each decade. Regular screenings should start at this time. Heredity: If you have a sibling or parent with glaucoma, your risk of developing the disease increases 5 to 10 times. As such, relatives of glaucoma patients should have their eyes checked every 1-2 years. Ethnicity: A black person has a 6-8 times higher risk of going blind from glaucoma than a white person. Hispanics and Asians also have a higher risk rate. Other factors: Nearsightedness, diabetes (doubles the risk of glaucoma), steroid use, and having a previous eye injury. Detection Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye surgeon who performs advanced drainage implant procedures to alleviate glaucoma-related eye pressure, advises, “Since glaucoma and other sight-threatening conditions often don’t exhibit early symptoms, regular eye exams are vital after age 40.” A comprehensive exam should include: Ophthalmoscopy (a look inside at the back of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma abnormal optic nerve size and loss of pink coloring), Tonometry (a check of inner eye pressure done either with a puff of air or by painlessly touching the eye), Visual Field Testing (to create a computerized “map” of the range of existing sight, Gonioscopy (use of a special lens to see in to check if the drainage angle of the eye is open or closed), and an OCT laser scan (a painless scan similar to a CT scan to diagnose, track and treat changes to the optic nerve

and retina—often before damage occurs). Dangers of having glaucoma Glaucoma-related “tunneling” (loss) of side vision makes it difficult to safely navigate stairs, stay in the proper driving lane, detect obstacles, etc. As such, glaucoma has been shown to increase the risk of having a car accident by up to six times and triples the risk of falling. Medical treatment Glaucoma can’t be cured, but treatment can usually halt further damage and vision loss. The most common type is a lifelong condition that requires continual management with prescription eye drops to lower pressure (by either decreasing fluid production or increasing outflow). Laser treatment “In some cases, when drops alone cannot control pressure, side effects are intolerable, or multiple drops are required, laser treatment may be an alternative, including LTP and SLT (which increase fluid drainage) and ECP (which decreases fluid production). All take less than 10 minutes at our sur-

gery center and are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Candidacy depends on your specific condition and circumstances,” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Benefits of laser treatment “Laser procedures are highly successful at controlling glaucoma and reducing the need for drops or surgery. This is especially important for people who already have other conditions requiring daily medication(s) that they have to worry about buying, taking and tracking,” says eye care specialist Dr. Michael

Raciti. Detection + Treatment = Vision Protection “Glaucoma-related sight loss is often preventable with prompt diagnosis and care. But all of our expertise, equipment and treatments are of no use if patients don’t come in,” says David Scheidt, OD, past president of the Milwaukee Optometric Society. “Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital to protecting and preserving vision.” More information Encourage your siblings and other family members to be checked for glaucoma, especially if one of you has the disease. If any of you do not have an eye care specialist, you can call 414-321-7035 for a free educational booklet and information about scheduling a comprehensive screening (usually covered by insurance or Medicare) at their offices on 7th & Wisconsin Avenue, Mayfair Road across from the mall, or 102nd & National Avenue. They also offer educational eye-related information at www.eyecarespecialists.net.

When was your last eye exam? See the best you can see. See an Eye Care Specialist. African-Americans’ risk for vision loss or blindness is 8 times more than whites for glaucoma and 3 times more for diabetes. How can you protect yourself and your family? Call Eye Care Specialists and mention this ad to schedule a comprehensive exam. We’re pioneers in eye surgery procedures and lead the way in detection, tracking & treatment technology. And, we’re affordable— accepting Medicare, Medicaid & most insurances at 3 locations, including Mayfair Road across from the mall and downtown in the Wells Fargo building across from the Central Library.

Eight tips for making and keeping healthy New Year's resolutions If you are the type of person who makes but never keeps New Year's resolutions, these suggestions can help you make healthy -- and attainable -- goals this year. Don't abandon the idea of setting resolutions because you have broken them in the past. You may need to simply readjust the type and number of goals you're setting for yourself. Do be realistic. A resolution to run a marathon by year's end is likely unrealistic for an inexperienced exerciser. Likewise, resolving to stop all your unhealthy habits at once is likely to fail. Pick a safe, attainable goal with a realistic time frame. For example, if your resolution is to eat healthier, begin by eliminating one unhealthy food from your diet at a time, not all unhealthy foods. Don't make too many resolutions. There's no rule that you have to cover all areas you'd like to change in your resolutions. Pick one or two themes -- such as anger management, stress control,

healthy eating, smoking cessation, fitness improvement, career advancement -- that are most important to you, and set reachable goals within these areas. Don't set resolutions whose success is based upon factors beyond your control. Saying "I resolve to have a new job by summer" depends not only upon your own initiative but also upon external factors (the economy, the job market in your field) over which you have no control. Instead tell yourself,

"I resolve to have updated my résumé and sent it out to X companies by summer." That way, the success of your resolution is entirely within your control. Do set resolutions based upon your own wishes, desires, goals, and dreams and not those of society or those persons close to you. While this seems obvious, many people waste time trying to meet society's, or another person's, expectations. A resolution is bound to fail if it isn't from your heart. Do plan intermediate goals if it helps you maintain control. Decide where you'd like to be in three or six months, and check yourself then. Achieving these smaller goals also gives you a sense of accomplishment and motivation for the bigger projects. Do use the buddy system. Rely on your friends to support you in your resolutions, and do the same for your friends. Social support can be a great strengthener of motivation. Do plan a reward for yourself when the resolutions, or intermediate goals, are met.

Four simple ways to manage diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN)

If you’re one of the 26 million Americans living with diabetes, then you’re probably familiar with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), which is nerve damage that’s caused by chronic high blood sugar. DPN tends to be the most common complication of diabetes. Some of its symptoms include a tingling or burning sensation, difficulty walking, and numbness, especially in your feet and toes. If left untreated, DPN can eventually lead to amputation. While DPN seems to be a growing problem within the African American community, here are four ways to keep your DPN under control. 1. Don’t smoke Ever notice how “don’t smoke” is always somewhere on these types of lists? Well, there’s a good reason for it. When you smoke, your arteries narrow and harden, reducing the amount of blood flow to your legs and feet, which makes it more difficult for wounds to heal. 2. Keep your blood sugar levels in check If you’re a diabetic, then

you already know how important it is to monitor your blood sugar levels. When you have DPN, inconsistent blood sugar levels put you at risk for nerve damage, which can ultimately lead to amputation. 3. Take good care of your feet When you have DPN, it’s a definite must that you thoroughly wash and dry your feet on a daily basis. Also, always make sure that your shoes are well-fitted and that your socks are clean and dry. Be sure to trim your toenails straight across – or have them trimmed by a professional. Lastly, stay away from any antiseptic products and sharp tools, including nail files, as they may cause injury and further damage. 4. Communicate with your doctor Inspect your feet regularly. If you notice anything unusual, such as a foot injury that’s taking longer to heal than normal, inform your doctor right away!
