MPS: Op Ed. MPS moves forward on plans to improve; Assembly accountability bill troubles continue Milwaukee Public Schools is making progress. More MPS students are meeting reading standards. The MPS Class of 2014 earned $31 million in college scholarships, an increase of $7 million from the Class of 2013 and U.S. News and World Report tapped four MPS high schools among the top 15 in the state of Wisconsin. Under the leadership of MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver, the district is increasing efforts to improve student achievement even more. Over the next several months, Dr. Driver and the Milwaukee Board of School Directors will consider a series of Strategic Objectives and a Regional Development Plan. Working in tandem, these two efforts have the ability to jump start MPS improvement efforts. The Strategic Objectives are aligned with the MPS Strategic Plan and the administration’s goals: Academic Achievement; Family, Student and Community Engagement; and Effective and

Efficient Operations. Each of these goals has a series of programs that will be developed. For example, the Academic Achievement goal will include efforts to close the gap, educate the whole child, refine the MPS experience and rethink high schools. I am excited to work with the administration to move these efforts forward and to work with the community on shaping and implementing these plans. The administration has also developed a Regional Development Plan which is designed to increase the number of seats in high-performing schools and improve the capacity for quality community support activities. The Regional Development Plan has three main components: a Pathways Plan, Spotlight Projects and Community Cornerstone Projects. Each component of the Regional Development Plan will have community input prior to Board approval. The Pathways Plan increases the number of high

Michael Bonds, Ph.D. performing seats and re-establishes feeder patterns that provide parents and students with program consistency from kindergarten through 12th grade. Facility improvements, instructional program support, community building, neighborhood outreach and transportation redesign are key parts of this plan. The Milwaukee Board of School Directors already approved a key measure of the plan which increases space for our popular Montessori program. Spotlight projects improve enrollment and per-

formance by aligning and restoring specialty programs and contribute to feeder patterns. Examples of projects include an arts campus development. Community Cornerstone Projects create, restore and expand non-classroom-based opportunities that benefit students and the community. Projects such as Teachtown II – another housing and professional development program for new educators – an expanded Newcomers Center for immigrant families and Northside community recreation centers are among the possible projects. These are well-thoughtout and well-developed plans by the MPS administration designed to improve outcomes for our students and our families. Contrast our efforts to those in Assembly Bill 1, the school accountability bill being pushed by some Republican legislators. It lacks details on how the program will be implemented. It would turn pub-

lic schools over to for-profit charter school companies. It hurts school districts and students across Wisconsin by syphoning money slated for all public schools to forprofit charter schools. Quite frankly, there’s more in this proposed legislation that benefits private charter companies than Wisconsin’s children. The authors of Assembly Bill 1 are planning to make changes to the bill, but their concepts remain flawed. Assembly Bill 1 is a step backward and moves away from true transparency by allowing for a muddled grab bag of different tests. Assembly Bill 1 experiments with Wisconsin’s students and their educational futures. Our children are too precious and the outcome is too uncertain for Assembly Bill 1 to become law. The levels of domestic violence

The African American community has been a hot bed for violent acts over the past several decades. In the 60’s the community was rocked by riots sparked from social outrage. In the 70’s the violence on a national scale was replaced by the creation of street gangs. From the 80’s to 00’s violence in the African American community soared to a new high with the influx of drugs and gang activity. There is one act of violence that has been in the African American community throughout every era, domestic violence. Domestic violence is not only an African American problem; it is a global one. The reason domestic violence is often overlooked is because it is so common. Many people only think of domestic violence when a serious atrocity takes place. It is because of this lack of attention that domestic violence thrives in all race groups. Sadly the majority of people who are victims don’t even know they are. It is assumed that domestic violence means violent phys-

ical acts towards another person. In many cases this violent action is usually the culmination of other previous acts of domestic violence that no one pays attention to. When an outrageous physical display of domestic violence happens the public shakes their heads asking why? The answer may have been brewing in everyone who knew the victim and perpetrator, but wasn’t recognized. One facet of domestic violence is economic coercion. This is one of the lesserknown means of domestic violence that usually leads up to physical violence. The use of money to manipulate or control an individual in a relationship is ageless. The use of money has been the ultimate lure to get people to do everything from sell themselves to murder. Why is it no one understands that this is one of the major factors leading to domestic violence? In relationships things are supposed to be equal. If a person wanted to control another the easiest way is by getting them economically

dependent. If someone controls your income and quality of life they control you. Many people, men and women, get into relationships for financial security. If you take the money you often get what comes along with it. In many cases people don’t understand the way they are being led via handouts from a partner until it’s too late. By that time violence has taken place or is around the corner. Verbal abuse is a form of domestic violence that is finally gaining more attention. A person with a sharp tongue can carve up anoth-

A new agenda The annual “State of the Union” address has always been something that most Americans pay a lot of attention to, especially when there is a lot at stake for the nation and the world. Over the past six years the “State of the Union” addresses have been more closely watched since President Barack Obama (the first Black President) has been in office. In particular his addresses have been more scrutinize than other former U.S. Presidents and many believe it is because of him being Black. Regardless of what other think or believe, our nation is in a far better place than when President Obama was first elected in 2008. It has been quite remarkable, the stock market has doubled to all-time highs, we are out of combat roles in two countries, over 10 million more Americans can now afford health insurance, the economy is coming back, unemployment is coming down, graduation rates are improving, immigration reform, the housing market is rebounding and we now lead the world in oil production, natural gas and renewable

er’s psyche better that Uncle Will carving the Thanksgiving turkey. Verbal abuse is often used to keep a person's confidence level low. This form of domestic violence is usually the most common and creates scars that run deeper than many physical ones. A person who suffers from this form of domestic violence usually gives up and becomes emotionally weak. In some cases the victim becomes unbalanced and lashes out toward the aggressor ending with both in the cemetery. There are other facets of

domestic violence. Sexual abuse or rape can be associated with domestic violence. Another version of domestic violence is keeping a person from their family or friends. One of the biggest myths is that domestic violence is male and female oriented. This is a lie. Same sex partners have similar, if not more, issues relating to domestic violence. You also have women who abuse men physically and verbally. There is no one set of rules pertaining to domestic violence. Here is the bleakest fact regarding domestic violence. No one benefits from domestic violence; everyone loses, especially the children.

energy. Of course this is only the short list of his accomplishments. Many people have considerable differences with President Obama and some of that is expected and some of it does not make any sense. Every President will have detractors, doubters, haters and opposition. It comes with the territory and many see it as more about the political process than being personal. In the case of President Obama, I believe it is more of the latter, it is personal, and it's deep and it is about “race.” However, President Obama keeps on going and moving forward and working for all Americans regardless of their culture, ethnic group, faith, race or creed. His primary agenda as he believes is ... “to protect the best interests of all Americans.” During the “State of the Union” address this year, President Obama laid out a bold and new agenda for the nation and he declared the state of the union strong. In so many ways he covered it all or what he sees as the most glaring issues facing most Americans and the nation. These included rais-

ing taxes on the rich, racial tensions, income inequality, making community college education free and developing safeguards against cyberattacks. Well, as expected, that ruffles the feathers of a lot of people, who have other intentions and want to take the nation into another direction all together. Well, until I hear another plan that is far better than what the President laid out, then this is the new road map. What do you think? New Year’s Resolves: Panting for God (Conclusion) “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” -Psalms 42:1-2a Fitness gyms are crammed with people who do not want to pay the cost of ignoring their bodies, but too often believers suffer from the opposite malady: an apparent unconcern with matters pertaining to spiritual health. I pray one of your New Year’s Resolutions is growing closer to the living God. In this final article of this series, this writer will offer suggestions to boost your spiritual health. In Psalms 42:1-2 the Psalmist used a simile comparing his thirst for God to a deer’s thirst for water. When a deer is thirsty, he will run at full speed until he eventually finds water. Deer realizes when he is thirsty; water is the only thing that will quench his thirst. When the deer finds the water, he will literally immerse himself into it. Deer will also run to the

water when it sense it is in danger. Fear and the physical strain of running create a strong desire for water. The Psalmist is picturing himself like a deer that is on the run in desperate search of nourishment. As water is to a deer, so God’s presence should be for His people. When we are thirsty and our souls are in need of nourishment, we can go to God who is the only source that can satisfy our soul’s deepest thirst. Even when the enemy [Satan] pursues as a predator, we can immerse ourselves in God’s presence and find protection. Just as the deer can’t wait to quench its thirst, the soul of the believer should be yearning “for the living God” (v. 2a). The following are four spiritual habits to adopt during private devotions to assist you in experiencing a deeper level of knowing God and to satisfy spiritual hunger. Quiet time – Psalms 46:10. There are some that enjoy the mornings to have

quiet time with the Lord. Others may find that time of silence in the evenings. Carve out time in your daily schedule for regular and consistent time with God. Scriptural meditation Psalms 1:2. Scriptural meditation differs from bible study in that you meditate on God’s Word by reading fewer verses. Thus you can close your eyes and invite God to speak to you personally from those verses for a personal application.

Prayer - Withdraw to commune with God in prayer. Even Jesus with people yet coming to Him, withdrew to be with His Father. The first object of prayer is not so much to speak to God as to listen to Him. During private devotions, pray and also listen. By listening God will speak His thoughts to your thoughts. When God speaks, He is clear and always consistent with Scripture. (1 Corinthians 14:33). Journaling - Journaling is a record of how faithful He is. Write down your spiritual journey with God and the daily examples of His providence. Also record your prayer requests and the answers God gives you. Beloved, the bottom line is only the living God can quench the thirst of the human heart. Just as the deer knows intuitively where to find water when it is thirsty, so too we must seek Him with everything we got. Does your soul pant for God? When there is no hunger for

Education

Bulletin Board Meet leaders, enroll early in 100+ neighborhood and specialty schools at MPS fair

MPS All-School Enrollment Fair set for Saturday, January 31 at High School of the Arts Families looking for a new school for the fall or in the coming years will be able to meet with school leaders and enroll early in more than 100 elementary, middle and high schools as Milwaukee Public Schools hosts its All-School Enrollment Fair. School options include strong neighborhood schools that prepare students to succeed in college and careers as well as specialty schools focused on Advanced Placement coursework, the arts, bilingual education, Career and Technical Education, Gifted and Talented education, rigorous International Baccalaureate college preparatory programming, language immersion and Montessori education. The fair is set for Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 9 a.m. to noon at MPS' Milwaukee High School of the Arts, 2300 W. Highland Avenue, Milwaukee 53233. A promotional video for the fair is available online. Families who attend will be able to enter their fall ThreeChoice Enrollment application early. Three-Choice Enrollment is for families who are new to the district or who are selecting a new school for the fall. "The All-School Enrollment Fair is an incredible opportunity for families to meet the people who are leading the charge for improvement throughout our schools, find the school that fits their child and get set for the coming school year," MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver said. Child care and Spanish and Hmong language services are available at the fair. Shuttle buses will leave from North Division, South Division and Harold S. Vincent high schools at 9 a.m. to transport families in those areas to the

fair. The buses will return to the high schools at the end of the fair. Enrollment applications taken during the fair and during Three-Choice allow families to choose three schools for the fall. Once Three-Choice officially begins February 2, families can fill out an application online at mpsmke.com/enrollMPS, at the MPS school of their choice, at an MPS District Parent Resource Center located at North Division and South Division high schools or at MPS Central Services, 5225 W. Vliet Street, Milwaukee 53208. The Three-Choice period ends February 20. All applications received at the fair and during the Three-Choice period are treated equally and if there are more students applying at a given school than there are seats, a random selection determines enrollment. Families in the attendance area are given preference at neighborhood schools. Applications received after February 20 are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The fair and Three-Choice come as more MPS students are meeting reading standards, its 2014 graduating class earned $31 million in scholarships and the district is committed to improve outcomes through a number of significant efforts: • The district continues its work to create more highperforming schools and expand successful and popular programs. Examples include more seats at top-ranked Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School and the new high school at highly rated Golda Meir School. • MPS is transforming underperforming schools into high-performing schools through its Commitment

Schools initiative. The district is implementing rigorous academic and behavioral interventions at Commitment Schools so students achieve greater college and career readiness. • MPS GE Foundation Schools are models for the rigorous Common Core state Standards and collaborative learning that can be studied and replicated by other MPS schools. • MPS is part of a unique 5-in-1 Collaborative to bring the energy of the district together with major partners

Northwestern Mututal, City Year, Teach for America and Schools That Can Milwaukee to pursue academic excellence at Carver Academy with the goal of making the school a model of success. • MPS is working closely with Milwaukee Succeeds on a pilot program focused on foundational reading skills for students at teacher coaching at Gwen T. Jackson and Clarke Street schools. Early findings show encouraging results and promising growth. • MPS provides Parent

Coordinators in each school to strengthen the bonds between schools and families because parents are students' first and most important teachers. • All MPS schools now have School Support Teachers to drive improved instruction by supporting school-based professional development and working to identify and grow excellence in teaching. MPS is also recognized as a leader for its work to increase college and career readiness, including its two College Access Centers and a growing number of schools using rigorous Project Lead the Way curriculum. MPS has the largest urban PLTW program in the country. The district is committed to building its leadership pipeline to better prepare innovative, effective and energetic staff for leadership roles and to strengthen teacher and school leader performance through the Educator Effectiveness system of feedback, support and evaluation.

How to choose the right gym So you've made the New Year's resolution to get healthy and shape up. But we're almost at the end of January and you still haven't found a gym to get started on that resolution. If you’re looking for a gym here are some important tips to consider. Always follow your gut, if you aren’t comfortable with something, you won’t be comfortable going to the gym on a regular basis. Philosophy The most important consideration when choosing a gym is to look into their philosophy. If they just want to get you in and out, rush you through your tour to get you to sign papers, etc., you may want to look elsewhere. You want a gym where the staff is genuinely concerned with getting you to your fitness goals. Atmosphere Find a club that matches your personality and comfort level. You don’t need to be-

come friends with everyone you see, but you don’t want to feel like an outcast either. If you’re a woman you may feel more comfortable at a women-only gym. Time management The last thing you want is to be rushing to the gym, rushing through the gym, and rushing to get home. Be sure that the gym you pick is close to your work, or your home, and that the location is convenient is easily accessible and has ample parking. Not only is location an issue, but check out the gym during the time slots you intend to go. Make sure there is lots of equipment available and people aren’t standing around waiting for machines. Cost Gyms are expensive, there’s really no way around it. Your best bet is to choose a community centre or YMCA if you are looking for a bargain price. If you want amenities like a pool, group fitness

classes, and premium equipment, you may be looking at a higher price. If you sign up with a friend or spouse you may be able to get a couple’s deal to improve the cost of your membership. It's always a great idea

pare the price of the daycare visits between gyms as well. Daycare sessions are one thing you can usually negotiate with before signing your contract, so be sure to ask for free trips or a discounted rate. Contracts A gym most often wants to lock you into a contract. While this is usually beneficial for your wallet, if you aren’t sure if you’ll stick to the gym, this could cost you more money in the long run. If you don’t want a contract that will be a large deciding factor for your gym choice. The best advice is to visit a number of local gyms and evaluate them based on this criteria. Never sign a contract to join with someone else so or purchase on the spot, take you can motivate each other a day to think about it, and and have someone to keep see if you can squeeze a betyou company on your fitness ter deal out of them the foljourney. lowing day. If you have children you may also need a gym that has a daycare. Be sure to com-

Diabetes: Head-to-toe effects you might also have to live with

Get inside Photos, Updates and the latest News!

As if living with diabetes wasn’t already hard enough, other long-term, life-threatening complications that develop naturally can make the disease that much more difficult. Here are five common complications that may come along with diabetes. 1. Alzheimer’s disease Type 2 diabetes is believed to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease – and the less controlled that your blood sugar is, the greater your risk.

2. Hearing loss There are 35 million Americans living with some form of hearing loss, and according to the American Diabetes Association, many of these people have diabetes or prediabetes. Additionally, a recent study found that people with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss compared to those who aren’t diabetic. While it certainly seems that hearing problems are more common among those with diabetes,

there’s still more research that needs to be done regarding the link between diabetes and hearing loss. 3. Cardiovascular disease Once you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, your risk for developing coronary artery disease, chest pain (angina), heart attack and heart disease increases. 4. Kidney damage Did you know that your kidneys contain millions of tiny blood vessel clusters that empty out waste from your blood? Well, when you have diabetes, this filtering process gets disrupted, which can lead to kidney failure or endstage kidney disease. 5. Nerve damage Too much sugar can be damaging to the capillaries, which are essential when it comes to nourishing your nerves. And when your nerves don’t receive the nourishment they need, you could experience numbness in your legs and/or other affected limbs.

Personal Finance & Business

By Jason Alderman Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Pros and cons of reverse mortgages Over the last decade, reverse mortgages have been marketed as an easy way for seniors to cash in their home equity to pay for living expenses. However, many have learned that improper use of the product – such as pulling all their cash out at one time to pay bills – has led to significant financial problems later, including foreclosure. In actuality, there are some cases where reverse mortgages can be helpful to borrowers. However, it is imperative to do extensive research on these products before you sign. Reverse mortgages are special kinds of home loans that let borrowers convert some of their home equity into cash. They come in three varieties: single-purpose reverse mortgages, Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) and proprietary reverse mortgages. Who can apply? Homeowners can apply for a reverse mortgage if they are at least 62 years old, own their home outright or have a low mortgage balance that can be paid off with the proceeds of the reverse loan. Qualifying homeowners also must

have no delinquent federal debt, the financial resources to pay for upkeep, taxes and insurance and live in the home during the life of the loan. Consider the following pros and cons as a starting point for trying or bypassing this loan choice. Even though HECM loans require a discussion with a loan counselor, you should bring in your own financial, tax or estate advisor to help you decide whether you have a safe and appropriate use for this product. Pros of reverse mortgages: • They're a source of cash. Borrowers can select that the amount of the loan be payable in a lump sum or

regular payments. • Proceeds are generally tax-free. Final tax treatment may rely on a variety of personal factors, so check with a tax professional. • Generally, they don't impact Social Security or Medicare payments. Again, important to check personal circumstances. • You won't owe more than the home is worth. Most reverse mortgages have a "nonrecourse" clause, which prevents you or your estate from owing more than the value of your home when the loan becomes due and the home is sold. • Reverse mortgages may be a smarter borrowing option for some down-

sizing seniors. With proper advice, some borrowers use them to buy new homes. Cons of reverse mortgages: • You may outlive your equity. Reverse mortgages are viewed as a "last-resort" loan option and certainly not a singular solution to spending problems. • You and your heirs won't get to keep your house unless you repay the loan. If your children hope to inherit your home outright, try to find some other funding solution (family loans, other conventional loan products) first. • Fees can be more expensive than conventional loans. Reverse mortgage lenders typically charge an origination fee and higher closing costs than conventional loans. This adds up to several percentage points of your home's value. • Many reverse mortgages are adjustable rate products. Adjustable rates affect the cost of the loan over time. • If you have to move out for any reason, your loan becomes due. If you have to suddenly move into a

nursing home or assisted-living facility, the loan becomes due after you've left your home for a continuous year. Bottom line: Reverse mortgages have become a popular, if controversial, loan option for senior homeowners. For some, they may be a good fit, but all applicants should get qualified financial advice before they apply.

“Our Auntie Rosa” by Sheila McCauley Keys with Eddie B. Allen, Jr.

c.2015, Penguin Tarcher $24.95 / $27.95 Canada 208 pages Once, many years ago, your grandmother chased your grandpa out of the house. Nobody remembers why or what happened afterward; the particulars are lost, and they aren’t important anymore, really. The laughtil-you-cry telling, the knee-

slapping, each embellishment as years go by – that’s what truly matters. Family stories are the glue that holds you all together. And in the new book “Our Auntie Rosa” by Sheila McCauley Keys (with Eddie B. Allen, Jr.), you’ll read one family’s recollections of an icon. For much of their early lives, Sylvester McCauley’s children didn’t know who their favorite aunt really was. Sure, they’d read about the woman who launched the Civil Rights movement. They’d heard her name said with pride. But for most of them, it took awhile to make the connection: the woman on the bus that day in Montgomery was their Auntie Rosa Parks. Even after she moved north, after she and her husband and mother came to live with the eleven-member McCauley family in Detroit, their Auntie Rosa didn’t much speak of her actions.

The late Rosa Parks The nieces and nephews asked her sometimes, but she usually waved questions away. The past wasn’t important to her then. Family was. The Parkses never had any children themselves, so the McCauley kids were happy to absorb any extra love. Their Auntie Rosa was a good cook who loved to entertain. She was steady, supportive, and resourceful but she encour-

aged independence. An elegant, sharp dresser, Parks was never showy in manner or accomplishment – although she did save all her hate mail. To the children of her beloved brother and to those she enfolded in her circle, Parks embodied strength and fearlessness. She made sure there was food on tables more than once, and clothes on young backs. Through her mistakes, she taught the power of apology. She counseled them not to judge as they’d been judged, but she showed them that there’s a limit to forgiveness. In her latter years, they say, she was the same calm, determined person she’d always been. And even well into her eighties, she vowed to keep doing what needed done. With the approaching 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ famous act of defiance, you’re likely to hear a lot about her in the next year. But when was the last time you thought

about Mr. Parks? Yeah, same here. That’s why “Our Auntie Rosa” is so important. Filled with memories of the Parks’ lives within the raucous, loving McCauley family, this book offers things history doesn’t tell you. Author Sheila McCauley Keys (with Eddie B. Allen, Jr.) weaves her siblings’ memories into a treasury of life, not politics or action. We meet people important to Rosa Parks and, through them, we’re warmed by tales of a real person – tales that, if you never met Parks, will make you mourn for it. I absolutely loved this memory-filled delight, I loved its balance and I think you will, too. If you’ve ever wondered about the quiet, tiny giant behind the act, “Our Auntie Rosa” is a book to chase down.

Blazin’ Buffalo Potato Skins

Servings: 6–8 3 pounds small russet potatoes Olive oil cooking spray 1 cup shredded reduced-fat or regular Monterey Jack cheese 1 cup shredded rotisserie chicken 1/4 cup buffalo wing sauce 1/2 cup crushed Blue Diamond Hint of Sea Salt Nut-Thins 1/3 cup chopped Blue Diamond Smokehouse Almonds 1/2 cup light sour cream 1/4 cup sliced green onion tops Preheat oven to 450°F and line baking sheet with foil. Rinse potatoes and pat dry; pierce with fork or sharp knife. Place in large microwave-safe bowl; cover and microwave on HIGH for 15 minutes or until potatoes are soft when gently squeezed. Remove and let cool slightly. Cut in half and scoop out potato leaving 1/4-inch rim of potato inside skin. Place on prepared baking sheet and spray both sides of potato skins liberally with cooking spray; bake for 15 minutes to crisp. Sprinkle equal amounts of cheese into each skin. Stir together chicken and wing sauce and spoon over cheese. Top with nut chips and almonds and bake for 5 minutes more. Add dollop of sour cream to each and sprinkle with green onions. Serve with and additional wing sauce, if desired.

Grab n’ Go Popcorn Balls

Servings: 12 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/2 cup popcorn 6 tablespoons butter 1 (10-ounce) bag mini marshmallows 3/4 cup Blue Diamond Oven Roasted Sea Salt Almonds 1/2 cup chocolate chips Sea salt, for garnish In large Dutch oven, heat oil and popcorn over medium heat. Cover with lid, shaking pan occasionally to coat kernels. Once you hear first pop, continue shaking pan until popping slows down and all kernels have popped. Set aside. In large saucepan, heat butter over medium-low heat, until melted. Add marshmallows and mix until fully melted. Add cooked popcorn. Gently stir until popcorn is evenly coated with marshmallow mixture. Add almonds and chocolate chips, and continue to stir until incorporated into mixture. Remove pan from heat, and let cool for few minutes. Sprinkle with sea salt. Moving quickly, mold popcorn-marshmallow mixture into balls with hands. (Washing hands with water will help ensure mixture won’t stick.) Place balls on parchment paper, and let cool. Store in airtight container or bag.

Bacon Avocado Dip

Servings: 1 cup 1 large avocado, peeled and mashed 1/2 tomato, seeded and chopped 1/3 cup Blue Diamond Jalapeño Smokehouse Almonds, chopped 1/4 cup diced red onion 3 strips cooked bacon, roughly chopped 2 tablespoons sour cream 1 teaspoon minced garlic Juice of 1/2 lime Salt and pepper, to taste In small bowl, mix all ingredients. Let marinate in refrigerator for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix pretzels and almonds, and spread on large plate in even layer. Coat each chicken tender in pretzel-almond mixture, then place on greased baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through.
