Seaway Bank hosts pastors reception to say, "Thanks"

Seaway Bank and Trust Company Milwaukee Branch, 2102 W. Fond du Lac Avenue, hosted a Pastors Reception on Monday, October 28. 2013. The purpose of the reception, according to Seaway Milwaukee Branch’s Senior Vice President Tracy Meeks, was the bank’s way of “saying thanks for working with us.” More than 35 pastors attended Seaway Bank’s third reception for pastors in the Milwaukee area. Of that total, approximately one-third of the pastors are loyal Seaway Bank customers. Since the reception, several pastors have contacted the bank to discuss ways their parishioners can be provided information on home ownership and classes on financial literacy. When asked on Wednesday what he thought of the Pastors Reception, Pastor Mose Fuller of St. Timothy Baptist Church was very forthright in his response: “I think Seaway is reaching out to pastors to have their churches become clients of the bank as well as members of their congregation. Moreover, Seaway wants the community to know they are in the community and their history. And so far they are doing a great job.” Pictured (from left) are: Seaway Milwaukee Branch Senior Vice President Tracy Meeks, Seaway Bank President Walter E. Grady and Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines.

Pastors group is looking to expand their reach block by block “Humility is our power,” proclaimed Rev. Gregory Lewis, President of Pastors United, during the regular Thursday morning meeting of the organization last week at Jerusalem Baptist Church. “Dealing with 188 pastors, we have to be humble. We’re in a great position, and no one will be trying to overpower anyone. We just need to do the work.” The work that Pastors United is doing is to enhance the overall quality for life for people in the city of Milwaukee. They are launching an initiative called, “Faith Builds Milwaukee.” “There are 20,000 vacant homes that the city owns; we want a few of them. We’ve started to research on buying and rehabbing those houses

to provide housing to our members. That’s economic development. By doing this, we can hire our own people and we need people trained and ready to do the work of rehabbing these properties. “The city is exploring ways to reduce this inventory of vacant homes. We need to devise a plan that we can present to the City of Milwaukee to secure some of these homes. This is a lofty goal, but it’s a practical one,” Rev. Lewis said. Pastors United wants the community to understand that they can provide hope in the city for the hopeless. “You can’t measure the victory when you get someone to realize they can do (Continued on pg. 10)

New Covenant Baptist Church celebrates 34th Pastoral Anniversary

“A Chosen Ambassador for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20) was the 34th Pastoral Anniversary Service theme honoring Rev. Dr. F.L. and First Lady Mary L. Crouther of New Covenant Baptist Church, Sunday, October 27, 2013. The morning message was preached by Rev. Dr. John W. McVicker, Pastor, Christ the King Baptist Church. "A Tribute to a Preacher” was the title of his message.“According to Old Testament scholars there was a period of 430 years that there was no preaching in Judea. 430 years, that is a long time for people to live in a non-preaching society. 430 years is a long time for families without hearing a word from heaven by way of a preacher. 430 years is a long time for the head of the house to provide for his household without hearing the Gospel of peace. 430 years is quite a long time for a nation to endure without hearing a preacher quote Psalm 33:12 which says, ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.’ We come today to pay tribute to God’s preacher,” said Rev. John W. McVicker, Pastor of Christ The King Baptist Church in his impassioned speech for Rev. Dr. Fred Crouther of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church and his wife, First Lady Mary L. Crouther as they celebrated their 34th Pastoral Anniversary. Rev. Fred Crouther began New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in 1979. Under his leadership, the church has grown to over 600 active members and active missions, including housing and evangelism.

Live performances and computer light shows will fill The Domes every Thursday night, Nov. 7–April 3 (including Thanksgiving). The Domes are located at 524 S. The Milwaukee Press Club held its 34th Annual Media Hall of Fame dinner on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Potawatomi Casino Ballroom. This event honored individuals who have made great contributions to print and broadcast journalism. Mrs. Louvenia Johnson (inset), co-founder of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper was inducted at the event. Johnson established a journalism program for high school students and scholarship foundation with her Social Security check. To this day, the scholarship has awarded over $500,000 to Milwaukee youth. Mrs. Johnson passed away in February 2008 at the age of 96. Pictured above are aspiring journalism students: Colton Dunham, Amber Ridgeway, Ciera Sutton, Nathan Conyers (co-founder of the Milwaukee Times), Raina Johnson and Lauren Miller. The question is often asked, what can one person do to change their community? Well, Mrs. Louvenia Johnson answered that question very well by her many acts of generosity to individuals and organizations. And on Friday, October 25, 2013, the Milwaukee Press Club inducted Mrs. Johnson posthumously into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame.

In 1981, Johnson cofounded The Christian Times Newspaper, along with Nathan Conyers and Luther Golden. The Christian Times was envisioned to be a publication that served the faithbased community, because there was no other news voice for the faith community in the city of Milwaukee. The publication broadened its focus and later in that same year began to incorpo-

rate more community news and the name was changed to The Milwaukee Times and thus launched a weekly publication. Johnson served as office and personnel manager. She visited advertisers, answered the phone, communicated with churches, assisted with the delivery of the paper and took the paper to the printer. She was a joy to work with and never missed a day com-

ing to the office; her infectious energy was kept alive by her love of Christ and her favorite snacks, a Pepsi Cola with a bag of pork skins. Johnson was known as a real visionary leader and pioneer in the news business. Her vision and passion for the news ran across Wisconsin in various communities: Milwaukee, Beloit, Racine and Madison. The Milwaukee Press Club presented this year’s Hall of Fame Inductees on Friday, October 25, 2013 at Potawatomi Casino Ballroom. Pictured above are: David Zweifel, Jayne Jeffery, Nathan Conyers, Daniel Hanley, Jr., daughter of the late Wilmott Ragsdale, Tom Brochhausen, Gene Mueller and Bob Reitman. Louvenia Johnson and Wilmott Ragsdale were honored posthumously. Nathan Conyers accepted the award for the late Mrs. Louvenia Johnson.

Times co-founder honored (Continued from pg. 2) Johnson, along with her business partners collaborated with several other individuals to publish a regional publication, which carried news from Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin. She later purchased The Communicator News, formed an alliance with The Beloit Chronicle and established The Madison Times newspaper, which is still being published on a weekly basis today. Her efforts went

a long way to ensure there would be an African American voice in Wisconsin. Johnson had a strong desire to help others. She devoted her life to assisting youth, which in 1988 led to the founding of The Milwaukee Times Louvenia Johnson Journalism Scholarship Fund, Inc. The fund was established to assist high-school students interested in print or broadcast media careers. Since the inception, the Louvenia Johnson scholarship fund has awarded nearly $500,000 to youth in Wisconsin. In addition to handling the demands of a weekly publication, Louvenia also worked with religious and youthserving organizations, such as the American Baptist Association, the General Baptist State Convention of Wis-

consin, Inc., the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, the Cub scouts, the Black Women’s Network, the Office on Aging and Social Development Commission. Her unifying effect in both the private and public sectors touched many lives throughout the state. Johnson passed away in 2008, at the age of 96 from complications of a stroke. Her legacy lives on today, through the dedication the only surviving co-founder of The Christian Times, Mr. Nathan Conyers. Conyers and his wife, Lynda JacksonConyers are keeping Louvenia Johnson’s memory alive by continuing to publish The Milwaukee Times, with the esteem and respect with which Johnson started the newspaper.

Did the clothes and shoes you’re wearing come from a black department store owner? Do black people manufacture and sell the cell phones, computers, iPads® or other electronics that you’re using? While you are going about your everyday business, how much money will you be spending with “Caucasians, Jewish, Italian or Arab” communities where economic power is really being built? Discovering my true self in Africa

By Tony Farrell

God sent the Angel I asked Him for I went to Africa in the first place because God had clearly been calling me there in order to work on eradicating hunger and poverty in the world by teaching agricultural entrepreneurship. As long as there are hungry people, this work is not complete. Therefore, with such a huge goal to accomplish, I earnestly prayed asking God to send the Holy Spirit and angels to guide and protect me and enable me to do His work. He answered this prayer in huge, unexpected ways that left me weeping with joy. After visiting Jonas Yogo’s farm in Po, the very next morning I was off to my next stop, a progressive farm in a village named Guie which was north of the capital. Here I felt very isolated at first because nobody spoke English very well, yet this was a blessing because I was able to more clearly see the beauty of all the people without my judgments getting in the way. The farming included huge fenced in areas, managed livestock, crop rotation in fields, composting, natural windbreak and erosion control hedges, wildlife preserves, electric fences, levees for rainwater catchment, a massive tree and shrub nursery and more. It was very large; we traveled from one area to another via motorcycle. Clearly this was an oasis of abundance in the middle of the dry savannah. My tour guide Tewende asked me what I wanted to see, and I simply said, “Everything.” After we had seen all the farming operations and the local village stores,

he told me, “Now we greet the child.” We arrived at a circular cluster of buildings which he told me was the orphanage – and there were maybe one hundred children in total, all of whom had no parents. One building in particular was separate from the rest, and there were a premature baby girl who had been found abandoned in a latrine and was being nursed back to health. At about 3 pounds, she was so tiny and fragile, drinking formula from a syringe. My teammate Marilyn named her “Grace.” While at the orphanage, they got a call to rescue another premature baby that had also been found in a latrine, and we went along to pick her up. This time I was asked to name her, and I gave her the name “Ange,” which is French for “Angel.” She also received the name “Marilyn” after my teammate. Thus her official papers now showed her to be “Ange Marilyn.” There was my Angel, manifest before me and beholden in my arm. From head to toe her entire body fit between my wrist and elbow. I had never expected God to send me an Angel in such an innocent, dependent, fragile package, but He did… and it was precisely the Angel I needed Him to provide. Last

A time for honor

“Why do you want this so bad?”

This was the question Jo (Aunjanue Ellis) asked her husband Chief Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding Jr.) in the movie “Men of Honor.” His answer to his wife was… “Because they said I couldn’t have it.” His wife asked this question of him to find out the real reason why he wanted to return to full active duty in the Navy as a deep water salvage diver after an accident cause him to lose one of his legs. In his quest to return to active duty, he had to go before a Naval review board to demonstrate that he was ready for active duty. After demonstrating that he was physically fit, he was re-certified and went on to serve 10 more years in the Navy as a master diver. Similarly and with the same sentiment, focus and determination, people also should believe in the turnaround of Urban America, especially in Milwaukee. Even when we heard, Ange Marilyn has gained a bunch of weight and is chubby, happy and healthy. To be continued next week with, “The rapid embracing of Christianity in Burkina Faso” Tony Farrell started his current business venture, Farrell Marketing Technology LLC, in April of 2011. Over his lengthy career as an information technology entrepreneur, he has worked on tens of thousands of computers and helped dozens of business to have smooth running, efficient computer infrastructure and great looking web sites that generate more business through search engine optimization. In February 2012, Tony began intensive organic farming on a small scale in his living room, including vermicomposting and aquaponics systems, and he completed Growing Power’s Commercial Urban Agriculture program in May 2012. Tony is currently enrolled in the Milwaukee-based Victory Garden Initiative’s Food Leader Certificate Program and Permaculture Design Certificate Program and is building a local for-profit microgreen production business called Farmer Tony’s Mission Greens. Tony recently returned from a three week agricultural mission trip to Burkina Faso, marking his first foray into international work. This series tells the story of that journey. Tony welcomes comments and feedback, and he may be contacted through his personal email address tony@farrellfamily.org

...are the critical questions that need to be answered. Most people would agree that a lot is at stake in terms of the health, safety, education and personal property in urban America. With each passing day, the cost continues to rise if the issues and challenges of residents are not addressed. Today, the inner city is in need of men and women who for no other reason want to help bring urban neighborhoods back to life. It needs people who are in it for the right reasons and are working as hard as possible to make things happen. Of course there is a lot to do, roads to cross, hills to climb, fences to mend and bridges to build. But it is all possible, for all it takes are good people to do the right thing.

it seems that the very foundations that once sustained neighborhoods over the years now stand in disarray. Many inner city residents who live in tough neighborhoods need a chance to demonstrate that they deserve a chance, investment and recertification. The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Honoring our veterans and military personnel (week 1) “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” - Maya Angelou This month we pause to support our troops and honor all our armed service veterans. On November 11, 2013 our nation will honor the men and women who have served and are serving our country. Many of our veterans have returned home from war with scars, injuries and are having a very difficult time. The price for freedom costs. Unless you have served in the military, you really don’t know how it feels to sign your name to a piece of paper and walk down a cold hallway to the process-

ing station. Then, have to get on a plane not knowing if you will ever return home. The cost our servicemen and women pay is great. Jesus says in John 15:13: “Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friend.” Have you ever sat and thought about your struggles and pain and then found yourself feeling sorry for yourself ? During those times, think about the soldier far from home driving down a road littered with grenades not knowing when the next bomb will be detonated or piloting an airplane in hostile territory constantly on the lookout for enemy fire. The greatest thing we can do this Veterans Day and the upcoming holiday season is

11:00 a.m. to honor all Americans who have served. The parade route will start at the corner of 4th and West Kilbourn Avenue in downtown Milwaukee.

Rev. Dr. Steven H. Harris Sr., and the congregation of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 2033 W. Congress St., observed their 67th church anniversary on Sunday, October 20, 2013. Antioch was organized October 8, 1946, with three members. The first place of worship was in a one room building located at 1844 N. 7th Street. The congregation grew and several years later relocated to 623 W. Reservoir. The church received its charter from the State of Wisconsin in 1949. The membership continued to grow rapidly, which required another move to 1653 N. 5th Street in 1953. Ten years later, the church moved again because the city had plans to widen Walnut Street. In 1990 the church moved to 1990 W. Atkinson Avenue, and again after 12 years of being at that location, there was a need for more space. A much newer facility was offered to Antioch by the Augustana Lutheran Church and the deal closed on February 15, 1984. Six years later, Rev. Louis S. Beauchamp entered into eternal life. Over the years, several pastors served the church, including: Pastor Earl Thomas (now deceased); and the present Pastor Steven H. Harris, Sr. Pictured above is Rev. Harris and the Antioch Mass Choir.

Bulletin Board MPS, developers detail Phase One of Malcolm X redevelopment

Plan would include IB middle school and affordable housing The Milwaukee Public Schools and 2760 Holdings, LLC will develop a robust public/private partnership that will bring new opportunities for educational excellence and residential housing options to the Harambee neighborhood of Milwaukee. Under this partnership, the former Malcolm X building will be built out in two phases. The first phase will create affordable housing for area residents and a school. The school will be an International Baccalaureate (IB) middle school for 600 students, providing a high-quality middle school option for the area. IB, a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, is offered at five MPS schools and is one of the most popular programs in MPS. The site will also serve as a community asset with access to the gymnasium and auditorium for community members and groups. A collaborative community planning session conducted last summer by the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Economic Development Corp., reaffirmed an earlier call by the MPS Board of School Directors for the site to have community usage.

Shows at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9; 2 p.m. show Sunday, Nov. 10

With a purchase price and renovations totaling $4.2 million, 2760 Holdings, LLC plans to complete the educational component of Phase One by Fall 2014. MPS will lease the educational portion of the building from the developer for $4.2 million with the option to buy the educational portion of the building for $1. This allows MPS to have educational space that will be ready to be occupied by a high-quality educational program and the community will have access to recreational space and needed, affordable housing. “This partnership gives the community a chance to reap the benefits of the experience of the major part-

ners in 2760 Holdings, LLC, James Phelps of JCP Construction and Dennis Klein of KBS Construction,” said MPS Superintendent Gregory E. Thornton. “Together these two organizations have been major players in the construction of key Milwaukee projects including Kenilworth Square Apartments, Cambridge Commons and Riverview Terrace at UW Milwaukee, the Journey House addition to Longfellow Elementary, Marquette University’s Law School and School of Engineering and renovations of Mitchell Hall at UW Milwaukee, the MPS Juneau Complex and the Medical College.”

Quarles & Brady establishes American Bar Association Scholarship Fund in honor of former Chairman John W. Daniels, Jr. The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that it has established an ongoing scholarship through the American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund in honor of the firm’s former chairman, John W. Daniels, Jr. The scholarship was launched with over $100,000 in contributions from Quarles & Brady, colleagues of Daniels and numerous other friends and clients, and the total is expected to grow. The initial total alone is the largest one-time donation from sources outside the ABA since the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund was founded. Daniels completed his tenure as chairman of Quarles & Brady in September 2013 and now holds the title of chairman emeritus. He has received the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award among many other recognitions, including being named one of the top 50 most influential

Milwaukee Public Schools’ Milwaukee High School of the Arts is presenting the sensational hit Broadway musical revue “Blues In The Night.” The Tony Award-nominated musical tells the story of a group of men and women whose lives have hit hard times and they’re living in a cheap hotel in Chicago in the late 1930’s. Through a series of seventeen famous American jazz and blues songs, they tell the story of their falls from prosperity to the skids and their dreams of rising again. Conceived and originally directed on Broadway by Sheldon Epps, MHSA is producing the show by special arrangement with Music Theatre International, New York, N.Y. MHSA’s company of twelve talented young singers perform classic old jazz standards like “Lover Man,” “Willow Weep for Me” and “Wasted Life Blues” as well as the colossal American hits “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Lucky So and So,” and “Takin’ a Chance on Love.” High-energ y company numbers include “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” and “The Four Walls and One Dirty

Window Blues” and, of course, the title song “Blues In The Night.” Milwaukee High School of the Arts has a long and esteemed history of presenting high quality productions showcasing remarkable young talent in musicals and plays such as “The Wiz,” “West Side Story,” “Hairspray,” “Guys and Dolls,” “42nd Street,” “Gospel at Colonus,” “Two by Two,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “A Servant of Two Masters” and “Blues for Mister Charlie,” as well as decades of dance concerts, vocal and instrumental musical showcases of symphony and jazz, and thrilling gallery shows and artistic competitions. In this long-standing tradition of outstanding academic achievement and great artistic production, MHSA presents as its fall musical, “Blues In The Night.” Shows at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9; 2 p.m. show Sunday, Nov. 10 All shows at MPS’ Milwaukee High School of the Arts, 2300 W. Highland Avenue, Milwaukee Tickets are $4 for students, $6 for adults

portunities for our youngsters to receive a great education and pursue a bright professional future is a personal mission, so I could not ask for a more satisfying acknowledgement of my commitment to a life of service.” In fact, Daniels, a Harvard Law graduate, established his lifelong commitment to service while he was still in law school, when he was elected national vice-president of the ABA student division. During his career, he has served as both national president of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and national secretary of the ABA section of real property, probate and trust. The American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship grants 20 incoming diverse students with $15,000 of financial assistance, awarded over the course of three years of law school. Since its inception, the scholarship fund has helped to benefit more than 260 deserving students across the nation. Funds

donated in honor of John W. Daniels, Jr., through an online pledge website will advance diversity in the legal profession by providing financial support to deserving students who would otherwise be unable to achieve their career goals. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to achieve their dreams,” said Palmer Gene Vance II, chair of the Council of the ABA Fund for Justice and Education. “We are excited that we have been designated to assist exceptional students across the nation, for years to come.” “We are so proud to establish and sponsor this scholarship in honor of John,” said newly inaugurated Quarles & Brady firm chair Kimberly Leach Johnson. “We have personally experienced the powerful competitive advantages that come of diversity, so we are more than pleased to do this not only for John but for the entire legal industry.”

Talking Health with Dr. Carter

13

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

Healthy blood pressure (part 5) Heart disease, cardiovascular disease (CVD), is the leading cause of death for all Americans age 35 and older. This means men and women among all racial and ethnic groups. According the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 600,000 people died of heart disease in 2008, 25 percent of all deaths. In other words, one in four Americans died of heart disease in 2008. High blood pressure (HBP) is a major health problem in the U.S. The CDC estimates that 1 in 3 U.S. adults – about 68 million – has high blood pressure. In 2008, HBP was listed as a primary or contributing cause of death for more than 347,000 Americans. African Americans are especially susceptible, and are one of the most likely ethnic groups in the world to receive the diagnosis. HBP has also been diagnosed in twothirds of Americans over 65 and in a growing number of young adults and children.

Supplement your health In addition to dietary changes, taking supplements can help to lower HBP and to maintain already healthy blood pressure. If your readings are over 115/75 and you are not currently on medication for HBP, give this program a 30-day trial. Many nutrients affect blood pressure similarly to medications. Thus, if you’re on medication/s, consult your physician. Unhappily, many older people will also need medication to lower their blood pressure. In addition to my own work, the information below relies heavily on that of researchers at the Life Extension Foundation. 1. Control heartbeat strength • Magnesium: 350 – 1,500 mg daily • Hawthorn Berry extract: 3 – 5 caps daily, or drops per label 2. Regulate blood volume • Potassium: Only available

at 99 mg tablets. Eat potassium rich foods. • Calcium: 1,000 – 1,200 mg daily (See section “Magic Minerals”) 3. Antioxidants (Support blood vessel integrity.) • CoQ10: 100 – 300 mg daily (of the ubiquinol form of coenzyme Q10) • Lycopene: 15 – 30 mg daily • Vitamin C: 1,000 – 2,000 mg daily 4. Vasodilator s(Blood vessel dilation helps reduce blood pressure.) • Grape seed extract: 150 mg daily • L-Arginine: 1,600 mg three times daily between meals* • Soy isoflavones: 135 – 270 mg daily

Screening and diagnosis: Mammogram, clinical breast exam, and other tests Breast cancer screening looks for signs of cancer before a woman has symptoms. Screening can help find breast cancer early, when the chance of successful treatment is best. Two tests are commonly used to screen for breast cancer: Mammogram. A low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that are not normal. Check the womenshealth.gov screening charts to see when you should get a mammogram. Clinical breast exam (CBE). The doctor looks at and feels the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. Ask your doctor if you need a CBE. Related information Some women have not gotten regular mammograms in the past because of cost and lack of insurance. But insurance companies are now required to cover mammograms every 1 to 2 years for women over 40 at no cost to the patient because of the Affordable Care Act. Depending on factors such as family history and your general health, your doctor may recommend a mammogram before age 40 or more often. Learn more about mammograms and what to expect. Mammograms fact sheet Screening tests and vac-

cines • Regular screening is the best way to find breast cancer early in most women. If you are at higher risk of breast cancer, your doctor might want to use other tests too, such as a different type of mammogram or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is important to let your doctor know if you find any changes in your breast, such as a lump or dimpling or puckering of the skin. Although research results do not support an official recommendation that all women conduct breast self-exams, knowing your body is key to pointing out any concerns to your doctor. Diagnosing breast cancer Screening tests look for signs of cancer. If a screening mammogram or CBE shows a breast change that could be cancer, additional tests are needed to learn more. These tests might include: Diagnostic mammogram. This type of mam-

mogram uses x-rays to take more detailed images of areas that look abnormal on a screening mammogram. •Ultrasound exam. Sound waves help your doctor see if a lump is solid (could be cancer) or filled with fluid (a fluid-filled sac that is not cancer). • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Radio waves and a powerful magnet linked to a computer are used to create detailed pictures of areas inside the breast. MRI may be used if enlarged lymph nodes or lumps are found during a clinical breast exam that are not seen on a mammogram or ultrasound. • Breast biopsy. Fluid or tissue is removed from the breast and checked for cancer cells. There are many types of biopsy. A biopsy is the only test to find out if cells are cancer. Not all women who have abnormal screening test results need to have a biopsy. Sometimes, doctors can rule out cancer based on the results of follow-up tests without biopsy. Finding out about “abnormal” breast changes can be scary. Talk to your doctor about what tests you might need and what the test results mean. If you learn that you have cancer, your doctor will help you move forward and begin treatment.

*If you have diabetes and/or significant heart, kidney or liver disease, talk with your healthcare professional before using arginine. 5. Other helpful nutrients • Vitamin D: 5,000 – 8,000 IU daily, depending on blood test results • Vitamin K2: 100 mcg • Garlic: standardized extract: 1,500 – 6,000 mg daily • Fish oil: 2,000 – 4,000 mg daily Information on “other helpful nutrients”: Vitamin D receptors are located within the blood vessels. Studies comparing higher and lower amounts of serum vitamin D reveal an increased risk for HBP among those with lower amounts. NHANES reports that nearly 75 percent of light-skinned and up to 90 percent of darkskinned Americans get insufficient vitamin D. For several years, we have harped on the importance of vitamin K2. This is because K2 makes sure calcium goes to the bones and doesn’t

lay down in the arteries and form plaque. Animal studies indicate that K2 supplements can reverse calcified arteries. (Schurgers 2007) Garlic has long been recognized for its effects on HBP. Besides supporting heart health, fish oil studies have shown reductions in blood pressure. Studies show that these foods taken daily display blood pressure lowering properties: whey protein (1 srvg), celery (1/2 c. cooked), and pomegranate juice (1/4 c.). HBP is dangerous. Be sure you know what your measurements are and remember, you’re not safe unless your readings are 115/75 or lower. Meanwhile – Eat right. Love a lot. Heal your heart. And, get out from under the pressure. Source: Nutrition News 2012 VOL XXXVI, No. 6

Half of single young adults eligible for the Health Insurance Marketplace could get coverage for $50 or less A new report released Monday, October 28, 2013 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) shows that nearly half (46 percent) of single young adults who are uninsured and may be eligible for coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace could get coverage for $50 or less per month. “The health care law is making health insurance more affordable for young adults,” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “With nearly half of single, Marketplace-eligible uninsured young adults able to get coverage at $50 or less per month, the health care law is delivering the quality, affordable coverage people are looking for.” Young adults are the age

group most likely to be without health insurance. But through the Health Insurance Marketplace, young adults can purchase quality, affordable coverage and get lower costs on monthly premiums through tax credits. Young adults may also be eligible for Medicaid. The amount an individual can save depends on his or her family income and size. The report examines data from the 34 Federally-facilitated and State Partnership Marketplaces and finds that out of 2.9 million single young adults ages 18 to 34 who may be eligible for coverage in the Marketplace, 1.3 million (46 percent) could purchase a bronze plan for $50 per month or less after (Continued on pg 14)

Single young adults could get insurance coverage for $50 (Continued from pg. 13) tax credits. In the 34 states, a total of 1.9 million young adults, representing nearly 7 in 10 (66 percent) of the potentially Marketplace-eligible uninsured ages 18 to 34, may be able to pay $100 or less for coverage in 2014. According to the report, an additional 1 million eligible uninsured single young adults may qualify for Medicaid in the states that have opted to expand the program

in 2014. The report also shows that if each of the 34 states expanded its Medicaid program, the proportion of young adults who could obtain low-cost coverage would be even greater. If each of the 34 states expanded its Medicaid program, 4.9 million uninsured single young adults would be eligible for Medicaid. While some states are expanding their Medicaid programs in 2014, other states are not doing so. Under the health care law, states can receive 100 percent federal funding in 2014 to expand their Medicaid programs to cover people with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. That’s about $15,800 a year for an individual, or about $32,500 for a family of four.

Heating Things Up:

By James Mack Owner Mack's Heating & Refrigeration

Mack's Heating tips for the home owner

Going Green: The pros and cons of switching to a tankless water heater If the idea of constantly heating your water in a big tank sitting in your basement sounds mighty inefficient and wasteful to you, then a tankless water heater may be the right option for you. I've researched some of the advantages of a tankless water heater system, alongside some of the compromises that come with the compact, more energy efficient option. Pros There are many advantages to going with a tankless water heater. From increased energy efficiency and lowered operating costs to space savings and extended lifespan, find out more about what makes for good reasons to go tankless. Energy savings/operating costs The first thought on tankless water heaters is generally: how much energy/money am I going to save? Well right off the bat, you're going to be spending MORE money to get a tankless water heater and all its plumbing in place. While a tankless water heater costs more upfront, your operating costs down the line should start to make up for it. What you're saving is in not having to spend money on standby heat, meaning

you're not wasting money heating water in a tank that's just sitting idly waiting for someone to need hot water. Tankless systems provide that hot water on demand, instantaneously, when you need it, so you don't have to waste energy heating unused water. You're also not losing heat that's idly sitting in a tank that, while insulated, is still going to lose heat and require constant reheating. Our friendly federal government has a nice energy cost calculator. Lifespan While a typical tank water heater is supposed to last 10 to 13 years, tankless water heaters are estimated to last

Tech Talk With Stanley Dyett

Computer obsolescence Electronic devices only have approximately three months before facing obsolescence Every owner of a PC or electronic device faces the same question when picking out new parts. When going into a store to get a device the question always is whether I should buy Product X or Y or wait for Product Z three months from now. That’s because here’s always a faster graphics card around the corner, a solid state drive on the horizon with more capacity, or a new CPU architecture on the verge of being announced. No matter how long you play the waiting game, it’s impossible to stay ahead of the curve for any real length of time. The same is true for consumer electronics, though could you have guessed that three months is the average life cycle of a

up to 20 years. If you're planning to stay in your home for a while, that's a hefty replacement fee you're saving. Even if you're not going to stay in your home for that long, it's nice to pay it forward towards the overall cost savings of home ownership. Space savings Even if you weren't concerned about saving money and energy, one of the big advantages of tankless water heaters is the potential space savings. Traditional water heaters with 40 to 60 gallon capacity are generally around 60" tall and 24" wide. That bulky metal tank can take up precious real estate in a home where space is at a premium. next greatest thing within a few days and clear out their old product. The way products are sold is changing, too. For example, within the last few months, every major wireless carrier in the U.S. has implemented a frequent upgrade program that allows customers to trade-up their smartphone for a newer model at least once a year.

A tankless water heater, in comparison, might be the size of a large computer, perhaps 20" wide by 28" tall and just 10" deep. Cons While the case for tankless water heaters might sound like a no brainer, there are several reasons why going this route might not be for you. Limited output A big tank water heater that stores 40 to 60 gallons of hot water at a time will keep your showers, laundry, and other hot water needs properly satisfied for quite some time. Modern tanks reheat additional supply quite quickly as well, so you'll quite likely never run out of hot water when you need it. A tankless water heater has a throughout limit, able to supply a few gallons of hot water at all times but also at a time. So if you have a large family and everyone's taking a shower, doing the laundry and dishes at the same time, a tankless water heater might not be up to the task or suitable for your family's particular needs. Additional cost While a typical tank water heater might be as cheap as $300-$400, they can price out

up to $1,000 depending on options. But if you consider a tankless water heater probably starts closer to $1,000, you've got a pretty big difference in price tag. Of course, the idea is to make up for that extra cost as you use less energy along the way, but still, having to put up that money up front isn't always an option for everyone. Instantaneous energy requirement A traditional gas water heater might use 30,000 to 50,000 BTU of natural gas or propane while it's heating up your water. A tankless water heater might require perhaps 150,000 to 200,000 BTU to do the same as it heats up your water on demand. Sometimes this high BTU requirement isn't possible, where there's a low pressure main, so you're limited to a fairly low total BTU spread among all of your gas appliances. If you consider switching to electric instead of gas, you'll need to be sure that your electrical system is up to the task. The price of electricity is usually higher than natural gas in many areas too, so you'll need to consider the cost of energy as well.

Celebrating National Hospice Month

Helping You Understand the Benefits of Hospice At AseraCare®, our goal is to help people understand the benefits of hospice care and guide them through what are often difficult decisions. There are many myths and misconceptions about hospice care, so we’re addressing some of the most common myths below. Myth

Reality

Hospice is a place where patients are sent, like a hospital. Hospice is only for cancer patients. Hospice is for patients who have a life expectancy of only a few days or weeks.

Hospice is specialized care provided to patients wherever they live. This may be in a private home, a skilled nursing facility, an assisted living setting or even a hospital. Hospice is helpful for anyone suffering the effects of a disease in its final stages.

Physicians must be certain that a hospice patient will live only six months.

No one can be certain how long a person will live. The physician can only say that if the patient’s disease follows its expected progression, his or her prognosis is six months or less. Patients are not discharged if they live longer than the six-month prognosis if they meet the hospice criteria.

Hospice does not medically treat the patient.

Hospice services are provided by a medically supervised team of professionals and volunteers. Although hospice services cannot cure a patient’s illness, hospice does manage the clinical, emotional and spiritual symptoms to provide quality end-of-life care.

Hospice is a place to send people to die.

On the contrary, hospice is a way of helping people to live out the remaining time of their lives with as much comfort and dignity as possible. Hospice deals humanely and realistically with this great challenge in life, and offers new perspectives on hope and support to patients and their families. Hospice is a service, not a place. The hospice team will help with any requested transfers to an alternative care setting. Hospice assists families by educating and supporting them in the care of their loved ones. Our philosophy is that every family member or caregiver is affected by the patient’s illness and needs education, support and care.

Hospice is a substitute for family care. Hospice is expensive.

Hospice patients cannot use intravenous (IV) therapy or feeding tubes. Hospice patients must have a “Do Not Resuscitate / Do Not Intubate” order.

Hospice is a comprehensive care program that is most effective and beneficial during a patient’s final six months of life. Any patient who meets the hospice criteria can remain on hospice for the remainder of his or her life, regardless of the six-month guideline.

Hospice care is a benefit under Medicare, Medicaid (in some states) and many private insurance companies. As such, the patient or family will see cost savings on certain medications and equipment related to terminal illness. Also, costs for curative treatment and procedures are minimal since the hospice emphasis is on comfort rather than cure. No patient is ever discharged from hospice services because of an inability to pay for them. IV therapy and/or feeding tubes may be appropriate for a hospice patient. Patients are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. It is not necessary for hospice patients to have signed a DNR/DNI order prior to admission. The hospice team will continue to educate the patient and/or provide them resources regarding advance directives and end-of-life decisions.
