The event included entertainment by Andre’ Lee Ellis and an inspirational message from Evangelist David Kimmons, Sr., Assistant Minister, Brentwood Church of Christ. The Brentwood event coincided with the annual national Black Marriage Day observance, which is generally held on the 4th Sunday in March. Each year local and national churches and organizations participate in the observance by having vow renewal ceremonies, ministers preaching sermons on the virtues of marriage in the Black community and other activity.

On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, from 8-9 a.m., Robert W. Baird & Co. hosted a presentation on inclusive hiring practices by Bryan Johanson, Executive Vice President of The Adler Group. This was the first ever Milwaukee-area presentation by The Adler Group, a nationally recognized consulting and training company specializing in re-engineering hiring processes. Morehouse College Glee Club comes to Milwaukee

Photos By Yvonne Kemp

On their annual tour for the second year and in Milwaukee last week, the internationally renowned Morehouse College Glee Club performed at Holy Redeemer (COGIC) on Thursday, March 20, 2014. The tour is used as a means for targeting African American males to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Last year, 16 black males from Wisconsin received scholarships and were enrolled at Morehouse. Several local alumni of Morehouse, including Greg Martin of Lena’s Piggly Wiggly Food Stores, Bishop Sedgwick Daniels of Holy Redeemer COGIC, and William Gore and Anthony Rhodes of Columbia Savings and Loan, joined the Glee Club singing the school song. The crowd attending the concert was estimated to be over 500.

Being Frank In all nationalities education has become one of the key focuses to attain one's goals in life. One of the crowning achievements is for a person to receive a degree from a university or college. Degrees from universities can open doors to powerful high-level jobs. The days of needing a degree to get a power job are over; just ask Georgia Maxwell. Maxwell has a nice job working with the state Department of Financial Institutions. Maxwell is also one of five finalists for vice president for university relations of the UW System. If appointed Maxwell would oversee the PR and lobbying efforts for the UW System. This position is one with great prestige and power. Maxwell is fortunate to be a finalist for such a position, especially since she hasn’t graduated from college. Maxwell left UW Madison without a degree in 1993 according to the university. A

degree doesn’t mean you are a genius or even competent. What a degree means is you have spent time memorizing and writing down the correct answers for a particular field of study. For years it has been debated if degreed people were really more qualified for positions than those who weren’t. Maxwell is the current champion for the non-degreed faction. How is it possible that a person with no degree is in the running for a position to oversee a whole university system? True, Maxwell would only be vice president of university relations but that is a big job. You would think that to even be considered for the position you would have to have at least a masters degree. The qualifications for the position say a degree is a desirable qualification. Rebuilding our Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D. Community BySpecial for the Milwaukee Times Saving our sisters There is no other way to say it, but black women are strong, gifted, intelligent and beautiful. They do not get enough credit for how they keep getting things done in spite of the challenges they face. Each day, they continue doing what comes so natural to them … making things happen, filling in the gaps and taking up the slack. In far too many situations, these sisters continue to be the backbone, bread winner, care giver, taxi driver, cheerleader, healer, peace maker, counselor, long and short order cook and leader in black families. The role and contributions of black women cannot be understated or belittled. In fact, our American history is full of black women who have demonstrated courage under fire, passion to lead and compassion towards those less fortunate. In my view, black women have stood the test of time and have been pivotal in the survival of black families and the wellbeing of communities. President Abraham Lincoln once stated, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe it to my angel mother.” And that is also my point as well; I

am because of my mother and… she was a sister. Let us not forget that in countless situations black women would go without so that their children can have the best in life. Let us also not forget about all the things they do in support of their families, community, schools and churches. We must not lose track of these facts and let us not get it twisted in the midst of the changing times in the 21st century. I know that a lot of people have various views about black women as managers and bosses in the workplace, in the pulpit of churches and in key roles in politics and society in general. But people need to get over it and move on to other important community issues. If the sister is qualified and is willing to do the work…so let it be. “You Go Girl.” Our black sisters should be treated with respect, appreciated for their intelligence and what they bring to the plate each and every day. They should not be subjected to various kinds of abuse, domestic violence and such. It is tough enough just trying to stay afloat

among the competing issues of the day, striving for more education, keeping the families together, praying, and dealing with conflicting schedules. You know, I did not make mention for their need to take care of themselves, i.e., hair, nails, message, shopping, reading and time to relax. Black sisters need to be supported, loved and taken care of, and that is the last word. Dr. Andrew Calhoun, can be contacted at andrewiiicalhoun@ gmail.com, Twitter #AC53, or call 414-571-5015. You can hear Dr. Calhoun each Sunday at Grace Fellowship Church, 3879 N. Port Washington Rd. Milwaukee.

The Counseling Corner By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Has your spiritual growth ever felt stuck in neutral? (Week 4) Is something missing in your spiritual life? Do you have the oomph, the spiritual enthusiasm, vigor or energy to get to your next level in Christ? Are you just praying sometimes – but not all the time? Are you now only occasionally reading your Bible and sporadically spending time with God? Has it come to the point where you only talk about the Lord with someone else “every once in a while” and even then it feels ordinary? Have you ever just felt like your spiritual life was stuck in a rut and you couldn’t get up? In answer to that question, this week’s response is from Diane. Diane responds: "I find my spiritual growth becomes 'stuck in neutral' when I become overwhelmed with personal problems, questionable activities within my biological and/or church family and negative world events. Dur-

ing those times I develop negative thoughts and spend less intimate time with God. It is so important for me to spend intimate time with God. The time spent with the Father, gives me the push I need to move forward when I fall into a 'stuck in neutral' experience. That time spent with God, reminds me to 'stand still' when I need to stand still and to move when it is time to move. I am also reminded that: nothing is too hard for God. But I can truly say that God does not allow me to stay in neutral too long. He is an 'On Time God.' Because of my faith and desire to be more like Jesus, I have fewer and fewer 'stuck in neutral' experiences." As Diane mentioned, many things can have us feeling stuck in neutral. Often when we begin to experience unexpected struggles during our spiritual walk, we think

that something is wrong with our faith so we begin to disengage. The more we disengage, the more we find ourselves stuck in a rut and missing out on the spiritual breakthrough that comes when we persevere through our struggles. In order to move past the feeling of feeling stuck in neutral, you need God to give you the keys to restart your spiritual engine. On this heavenly key ring are three keys: 1. Grace. We need to know that God loves us deeply and

that’s never ever in jeopardy. 2. Vision. We need to be reminded where we’re headed and why God called us down this particular path in the first place. 3. Access. We need access to mentors in our lives that have had their own “rut” or “stuck” experiences and been able to endure through them. Beloved, God does not want any of us to become stuck in our spiritual growth. It is God’s plan for His children to grow spiritually. God has foreordained and predestined His children, as Diane mentioned, to be conformed to the very image of His Son, Jesus Christ. (See Romans 8:29). Unless you grow spiri-

tually, it is difficult to have a growing fellowship with God. A spiritually growing Christian can literally walk and talk with God and live in that close fellowship and communion with Him. This is the plan of God. God wants you to fulfill your purpose and call on this earth and to do your part in His mission and vision for your life! St. Mark AME to celebrate 145 years of ministry and service April 13th St. Mark AME Church, located at 1616 W. Atkinson Ave., will celebrate 145 years of ministry and service on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. The Sunday morning celebratory message will be preached by Bishop Reginald Jackson, pastor of St. Matthew AME Church in Orange, New Jersey. During Bishop Jackson’s pastorate at St. Matthew, more than 2800 persons accepted Christ or joined the church, including over 250 children and youth. Because of the church’s growth a new edifice was built in 1985. Continued growth led to the construction of a new Family Life Center built in 2002. Giving increased from $50,000 to almost $2,000,000 a year supporting more than thirty ministries to meet the needs of both, church and community, as well as NIDA, the church’s nonprofit organization. Pastor Jackson encouraged the congregation to adopt the motto, “The servant church of the Oranges,” which is open seven days a week. The entire Milwaukee community is invited to come and hear the inspiring and motivational message Bishop Jackson will share with Milwaukee and the members of St. Mark AME Church on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Darryl Williams is pastor.

NOTICE OF SPRING ELECTION AND SAMPLE BALLOTS April 1, 2014 OFFICE OF THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE, MILWAUKEE COUNTY: Notice is hereby given of a spring election to be held in the City of Milwaukee, on the 1st day of April 2014, at which the officers named below shall be chosen. The names of the candidates for each office to be voted for, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office, each in its proper column, together with the questions submitted to a vote, for a referendum, if any, in the sample ballot included with this notice. INFORMATION TO ELECTORS Upon entering the polling place, an elector shall state his or her name and address and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. If an elector is not registered to vote, an elector may register to vote at the polling place serving his or her residence, if the elector presents proof of residence in a form specified by law. Where ballots are distributed to electors, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the elector shall retire alone to a voting booth and cast his or her ballot except that an elector who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the elector’s minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the elector of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice. Where Optical Scan Voting Systems are Used The elector shall connect the arrow next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided and connect the arrow on the write-in line. On referendum questions, the elector shall connect the arrow next to “yes” if in favor of the question, or the elector shall connect the arrow next to “no” if opposed to the question.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that at an election to be held in the County of Milwaukee, on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, the following question will be submitted to a vote of the people in a binding referendum. QUESTION “Shall that portion of 2013 Wisconsin Act 14 which limits the compensation of members of the board of supervisors of Milwaukee County other than the chairperson of the board and chairperson of the finance committee to receipt of an annual salary of not more than the annual per capita income of this county, which in 2012 was $24,051, and which limits the compensation of the chairperson of the board to not more than 150 percent of that amount and the chairperson of the finance committee to not more than 125 percent of that amount, subject to limitations and adjustments specified by law; and which prohibits supervisors from receiving any compensation or benefits not specifically authorized or required by law become effective in this county on April 18, 2016?” Yes

No EXPLANATION

A Yes vote will limit salaries and benefits for the Milwaukee County board of supervisors beginning in April 2016. A supervisor’s salary and authorized benefits will be capped at the annual per capita income of the county, which was $24,051 in 2012. Compensation will be limited to 50 percent more than the supervisor’s amount for the Board chairperson and 25 percent more for the finance committee chairperson. A No vote means the limits on salaries and benefits will not take effect.

Done in the City of Milwaukee on January 21, 2014 Milwaukee County Election Commission Nancy Penn Lillian Cheesman Rick Baas.

When using an electronic ballot marking device (“Automark”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the elector shall touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the elector shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. On referendum questions, the elector shall touch the screen at “yes” if in favor of the question, or the elector shall touch the screen at “no” if opposed to the question. The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes time shall be allowed inside a voting booth or machine. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the elector in casting his or her vote may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. If the elector spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one elector. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the elector shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After casting his or her vote, the elector shall leave the voting booth, properly deposit the ballot and promptly leave the polling place.

At UWM, ‘Brilliance Begins with an Idea.” Universities are known as places for learning, but they also are places for discovering new knowledge. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) focuses on doing both, involving students as well as community and business partners in the process. The university’s 2014 Research Report, “Brilliance Begins with an Idea,” highlights the many ways this is happening. Faculty member Anthony Ross, Rockwell Automation Endowed Chair in Supply Chain Management in the Lubar School of Business, is one of those featured. His work is an example of how the university can work with businesses to research problems. In this case, Rockwell Automation approached UWM researchers with questions about the design, quality and reliability of remanufactured products. Remanufacturing is the process of reconditioning or repairing used products to restore them to sound working condition. Together with a colleague from engineering, Wilkistar Otieno, Ross is looking at whether a specific product is worth being remanufactured. UWM graduates also bring what they learn into their work in the community. Celina Echeveste earned her master’s degree from UWM’s School of Education in 2012 and now teaches at Forest Home School. At UWM, she focused her graduate-program research on non-English-speaking families and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). As a result of the work she started at UWM, she has developed a handbook that covers the characteristics and warning signs of ASD, as well as school and community resources available in Spanish. “Children

in Spanish-speaking families and African American children tend to be diagnosed less often than others,” she says. “Maybe they don’t have the resources, or they don’t understand what autism is. I have a lot of parents come in and say they wish they had the resources earlier.” One major effort involves getting students involved in becoming entrepreneurs. For example, Ogechi Chidebell, a Lubar School of Business Executive MBA student from Nigeria, decided to develop a smartphone app called Agogo Network. Named for a gong-like instrument used in ancient Nigeria to announce important events, the app is designed to boost small businesses in Ogechi Chidebell says, “One thing the Student Startup Challenge did was her home country by making open my eyes that I really could do something that would change the lives of listings and reviews available through smartphones. people.” The app was one of the winners in UWM’s Student Startup Challenge (SSC). The SSC helps students turn original product ideas into their own startup companies. Winners receive financing, mentoring and help in developing a prototype. SSC taps the commercial potential of the rich ideas that present themselves in the course of earning a degree. UWM also promotes diversity in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through participation in the UW System’s Wisconsin Alliance for Minority Participation (WiscAMP) program. Student Juan Orjuela, a UWM sophomore, is featured in the Research Report for the work he did studying frogs with Gerlinde Hoebel, assistant professor of biological sciences. To find out more about UWM’s commitment to partnerships and UWM Photo research, you can view the annual Research Report online at www. Bulletin Board Three MPS robotics teams showcase skills

Three Milwaukee Public Schools high school robotics teams took their skills to the U.S. Cellular Arena in downtown Milwaukee Saturday, March 22, 2014 for the FIRST Robotics Wisconsin Regional competition. Robotics teams put the skills they learn in school to work, including not only science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, but also business, project management and time management skills. This year’s competition was played by two competing alliances of three robots each with the objective of scoring as many balls in goals as possible during a 2:30 match. Teams included one from MPS’ School of Career and Technical Education (pictured), one from MPS’ Riverside University High School and Team 1675, which includes students from MPS’ Bradley Tech High School, Rufus King International School and Washington High School of Information Technology. Team 1675 took 14th place at the regional tournament, the SCTE team finished in 38th place and the Riverside team took 57th. Dr. Anita Sparks, MPS School Improvement Spe- MPS Photo cialist, saw the SCTE team firsthand. “I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the students and the event,” she said. “SCTE students represented MPS to our highest expectations.”

Milwaukee Public Schools students are invited to apply for an MPS Public Scholars college scholarship, an honor that provides selected graduates with a $5,000 scholarship to attend a public college or university in the state of Wisconsin. Scholarships may be renewed for up to three years pending successful completion of renewal criteria and availability of funding. Download the scholarship application and eligibility form at http:// mpsfoundation.net/MPS_PublicScholars_2014.pdf. The MPS Public Scholars Program was established in 2009 through generous funding provided by an anonymous donor to the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation, Inc., for Milwaukee Public Schools students, as a show of support for public education in Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin, and in hopes that others will consider donating to the scholarship fund for students in the Milwaukee Public Schools. Study of mountain climbing takes students to Mt. Kilimanjaro Following their cross-curricular study of mountain climbing, third grade students in Ms. Schulteis and Mr. Hagen’s classroom at Zablocki School welcomed seasoned mountain climbers to their classroom for a presentation. After their presentation, Eric and Stephanie Bruckbauer were headed to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world! Imagine the students’ surprise when they received a photo of the welcome poster they made to greet their guests at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro! During their study, students read two stories about mountain climbing, including “Mountains— Surviving on Everest” by Michael Sandler. They also studied the formation of mountains in their science classes and learned about the seven summits in their study of geography in social studies, both of which align to the rigorous Common Core State Standards. Talking Health with Dr. Carter

By Dr. Lester Carter Owner, Carter Drug Store

C. albicans: The infamous fungus (part 1) With health delivery in such chaos and uncertainty, we at Carter Drug Store suggest arming yourselves with the latest up-todate information, which hopefully will prevent minor problems from escalating into major problems. You and your loved ones deserve the best treatment possible to survive in these difficult times. Do you have persistent athlete’s foot or vaginitis? Are you hypersensitive to chemical odors? Have you taken antibiotics frequently? Do you crave sugar? Bread? Alcohol? Do you just not feel good? Did you answer “Yes” to any of these questions? If so, you are a likely candidate for candida overgrowth. Candida albicans (can’-diduh al’bicuns; C. albicans) is an opportunistic yeast/fungus. Virtually everybody has this yeast among their intestinal flora. Under some conditions, C. albicans can outnumber the other microorganisms, caus-

ing an imbalance and resulting in a number of seemingly unrelated symptoms. One typical symptom – for both women and men – is having a swollen stomach after eating certain foods or just chronically looking somewhat pregnant. Together, these symptoms, once called candidiasis; are now referred to as “candida related complex” (CRC). You can regain your health. The solution is simple, but it ain’t easy. In fact, healing totally depends on your commitment to wellness. The first reference to a yeast-related illness was presented at a medical conference in 1978 by C. Orian Truss, MD. Truss became interested in the health implications of candida overgrowth after a woman he had treated successfully for vaginal yeast reported that her migraine headaches and depression had also disappeared.

William G. Crook, MD, brought Dr. Truss’s work to the public in 1983 with the publication of The Yeast Connection. Now, well-known integrative physician and naturopath, Carolyn Dean, has collaborated with Elizabeth B. Crook to develop The Yeast Connection Series. Search “yeast infection” at your favorite book seller and a plethora of books on the topic appear. Many innovative healthcare practitioners who treat for CRC report improvements in patient quality of life (Alan Gaby, MD). In spite of the impeccable credentials and vast patient experiences of Truss, Crook, and Gaby, the existence of

CRC has remained controversial among conventional physicians. This is particularly interesting in the face of the tremendous increase in Candida-related infections in industrial countries. Candida Related Complex Reading this section, you will understand why Candida overgrowth is called Candida Related Complex. CRC progresses in a particular pattern, which advances in four stages. 1. Problems originate in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. The best known of these is vaginal yeast infection (yeast vaginitis). Complaints also include bowel problems (including irritable bowel), indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, flatulence, bloating, cystitis, and anal itching. Possible symptoms at this stage also include sinusitis, athlete’s foot, jock itch, thrush, and fungal infections of the skin and

nails. 2. The intestinal walls are perforated; allergic reactions appear. Often referred to as “leaky gut”, these symptoms include the classic allergenimmune reactions: asthma, hives, acne, eczema, psoriasis, hay fever, bronchitis, and earaches. This is where ADHD, autism, and even MS can develop. There are also a myriad of possible reactions that accompany chemical and food sensitivity. These include—but are not limited to—headache, joint ache and muscle ache as well as sensitivity to fumes from perfume, cigarette smoke, household cleansers, and other chemicals (e.g., cleaning fluid and car exhaust), as well as to mold and mildew. Continued next week: More on Candida Related Complex

Dermatologists provide recommendations for preventing and detecting skin cancer in people of color People of color have a lower risk of developing skin cancer than Caucasians, but they are not immune to the disease. In fact, skin cancer is often diagnosed at a more advanced stage in people of color, which can make it more difficult to treat. A new study provides recommendations for the prevention and early detection of skin cancer in people of color based on a comprehensive review of available data. In the report titled, “Skin cancer and photoprotection in people of color: A review and recommendations for physicians and the public,” published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, a workgroup of recognized skin of color experts provided an extensive review of the scientific literature available on the incidence, risk factors and characteristics of skin cancer in people of color. On average, one American dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour. The fiveyear survival rate for African Americans and Latinos diagnosed with melanoma is lower than Caucasians, likely due to the fact that it is often more advanced when diagnosed. For example, the fiveyear survival rate for African Americans is 73 percent compared to 91 percent in Caucasians. “Many people of color mistakenly believe that they

are not at risk, but skin cancer is color blind,” said boardcertified dermatologist Henry W. Lim, MD, FAAD, C.S. Livingood Chair and chairman of the department of dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. “When detected early, skin cancer is highly treatable, but it can pose a serious health threat if left untreated.” Recommendations for preventing skin cancer Unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays has been identified as a risk factor for skin cancer in people of color. Basal cell carcinoma, the most commonly diagnosed skin cancer in Asian Americans and Latinos, is most frequently found on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the head and neck. Based on this information, the study authors recommend everyone, including people of color, take the following steps to prevent skin cancer:

By Jason Alderman Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Resist the urge to tap retirement plans early I have yet to meet anyone who thinks they’re saving too much money for retirement. On the contrary, most people admit they’re probably setting aside too little. Retirement accounts must compete with daily expenses, saving up for a home, college and unexpected emergencies for every precious dollar. If taking money out of your IRA, 401(k) or other tax-sheltered plan is your best or only option, you should be aware of the possible impacts on your taxes and long-term savings objectives before raiding your nest egg: 401(k) loans. Many 401(k) plans allow participants to borrow from their account

to buy a home, pay for education, medical expenses or other special circumstances. Generally, you may be allowed to borrow up to half your vested balance up to a maximum of $50,000 – or a reduced amount if you have other outstanding plan loans. Loans usually must be repaid within five years, although you may have longer if you’re using the loan to purchase your primary residence. Potential drawbacks to 401(k) loans include: • If you leave your job, even involuntarily, you must pay off the loan immediately (usually within 30 to 90 days) or you’ll owe income tax on the remainder – as well as a

10 percent early distribution penalty if you’re under age 59 ½. • Loans cannot be rolled over into a new account. • Some plans don’t allow new contributions until outstanding loans are repaid.

• Many people, faced with a monthly loan payment, reduce their 401(k) contributions, thereby significantly reducing their potential long-term account balance and earnings. • Your account value will be lower while repay-

ing your loan, which means you’ll miss out on market upswings. 401(k) and IRA withdrawals. Many 401(k) plans allow hardship withdrawals to pay for certain medical or higher education expenses, funerals, buying or repairing your home or to prevent eviction or foreclosure. You’ll owe income tax on the withdrawal – plus an additional 10 percent penalty if you’re younger than 59 ½, in most cases. Traditional IRAs allow withdrawals at any time for any reason. However, you’ll pay income tax on the withdrawal – plus the 10 percent penalty as well, with certain exceptions. With Roth IRAs, you can withdraw contributions at any time, since they’ve already been taxed. However, to withdraw earnings without penalty you must be at least 59 ½ and the funds must have been in the account for at least five years. To learn more about how the IRS treats 401(k) and IRA loans and withdrawals, visit www.irs.gov. Further financial implications. With 401(k) and traditional IRA withdrawals, the money is added to your taxable income, which could bump you into a higher tax bracket or even jeopardize certain tax credits, deductions and exemptions that are tied to your adjusted gross income. All told, you could end up paying half or more of your withdrawal in taxes, penalties and lost or reduced tax benefits. Losing compound earnings. Finally, if you borrow or withdraw your retirement savings, you’ll sacrifice the power of compounding, where interest earned on your savings is reinvested and in turn generates more earnings. You’ll forfeit any gains those funds would have earned for you, which over a couple of decades could add up to tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost income. Bottom line: Carefully consider the potential downsides before tapping your retirement savings for anything other than retirement itself. If that’s your only recourse, consult a financial professional about the tax implications.

Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook: From Hemingway, South Carolina, To Harlem By Sylvia Woods HarperCollins, Jun 23, 1999 Cooking 288 pages Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook begins as Sylvia recalls her childhood, when she lived with both her mother and her grandmother -- the town's only midwives. The entire community of Hemingway, South Carolina, shared responsibilities, helped raise all of the children, and worked side by side together every day in the bean fields. Perhaps most important, the community shared its food and recipes. When Sylvia set out to write this cookbook, she decided to hold a cook-off back home in Hemingway at Jeremiah Church. Family and friends of all ages shared

their favorite dishes as well as their spirit and love for one another. The recipes offered at the cook-off were then compiled to create this incredible collection, along with many of Sylvia's and the Woods family's own recipes. Here are the kinds of recipes you'd find if you visited the Woods family's home. Sylvia's daughter Bedelia is well known for her Barbecued Beef Short Ribs, which are as sassy and spicy as Bedelia herself. Kenneth, Sylvia's youngest son, has loved to fish ever since he was a child, spending his summers by the fishing hole in Hemingway. Now Kenneth's son, DeSean, enjoys fishing, too. Kenneth's Honey Lemon Tilefish, DeSean's favorite, is just one of Kenneth's special recipes presented here. And there are many, many other wonderful dishes, too. In this remarkable cookbook, Sylvia has gathered more than 125 soul food classics, including mouthwatering recipes for okra, collard greens, Southern-style pound cakes, hearty meat and seafood stews and casseroles, salads, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and more. These recipes are straight from the heart of the Woods community of family and friends. Now Sylvia gives them to you to share with your loved ones. Bring them into your home and experience a little bit of Hemingway's soul.

Soul Food: Recipes and Reflections from AfricanAmerican Churches By Joyce White HarperCollins, Jan 20, 1998 Cooking 368 pages When Joyce White moved to New York City from Alabama, she left small-town life behind and landed a job as a food editor at a major women's magazine. Weekends, however, found her visiting churches in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant, looking for a taste of home. Food has long been a part of the spiritual life of African American churches, and what she found there, along

with what she missed from home, was the comforting blend of cooking and fellowship that feeds both the body and soul. In this warm and joyful collection, White offers more than 150 recipes for the foods that worshipers look forward to after services, and she captures the spirit of these sociable meals with warm, conversational and occasionally poignant reflections from African American churchgoers around the United States. "We don't just come to church service and leave," says a retired nurse who directs hospitality for a large church in Los Angeles. "Many of us stay here half the day. That way we get a chance to rub shoulders and see what is going on or going wrong with each other." From delicious renditions of classics such as SugarCrusted Biscuits to updated favorites such as Black Beans with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, as well as special fare for entertaining and Kwaanza, the pages of Soul Food are alive with the spirit and love of African American churches -- and the terrific food to be found there.

Grace the Table: Stories and Recipes from My Southern Revival By Alexander Smalls Harlem Moon, Oct 1, 2004 Cooking 298 pages An atmospheric memoir filled with marvelous tales about the joys of food, music, and life--seasoned with one hundred of Alexander Smalls's celebrated worldclass recipes. In Grace the Table, the father of southern revival cooking serves up a delectable combination of memoir and cookbook as he recounts his life's journey from his hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the cosmopolitan cities of Europe and into the homes and hearts of Manhattan's socialites and celebrities. With an unabashed passion for food and a buoyant personality, Smalls recollects his grandparents' Low

Country cooking, and the almost spiritual power of a panful of hot buttermilk biscuits with fresh butter and sorghum. "Food was wealth to us," Smalls writes, "the kitchen was Fort Knox, and I felt rich just opening the refrigerator." Leaving smalltown South Carolina, Smalls would become a world-class opera singer, an odyssey that introduced a wealth of new tastes and led him to his ultimate calling: cooking. He feasted on Chinese takeout in New York, Steak au Poivre in Paris, Grilled Swordfish Rolls in Palermo--but everywhere he traveled, he carried with him the cuisine of the American South. In this unique book, Smalls shares his stories, family photographs, and one hundred of his inspiring culinary creations--sumptuous feasts, perfect for long dinners with family and friends. Sweet Potato Waffles and Southern Fried Chicken, Stuffed Veal Chops and Seafood Puppies, Pan-Roasted Salmon and Chocolate Raspberry Bread Pudding. . . just six of the glorious treats invented during Smalls's adventures. A memoir sprinkled with recipes that are a delicious blend of traditional fare and international flair, Grace the Table will remind you of home no matter where you come from.

Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine: Recipes and Reminiscences of a Family By Norma Jean & Carole Darden Doubleday, 1994 Cooking 333 pages In 1978, Norma Jean and Carole Darden researched and recorded their rich family lore that they gathered for seven years. They visited relatives in Alabama, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia, collecting traditional recipes, rare photographs, family health and beauty secrets, and recollections of special family celebrations and rituals. Beginning with their grandfather, Charles Henry Darden, who was born a slave and settled at sixteen with his wife in Wilson, North Carolina (Continued on pg. 23)

It's an inspirational guide that people with diabetes can use to lead a full and healthy life with the disease. • More than 100 recipes, including appetizers, desserts, breads, soups, salads and salad dressings, fish, meat, poultry and pasta. • Features a healthy living section that outlines a successful exercise plan, selfcare tips, and nutrition recommendations. • Includes personal anecdotes from Gladys and captures her mother's heartbreaking yet inspiring fight against diabetes.
