PREFACE

Intended Audience This book is specially designed for Illustration learners, lovers and professionals alike, for those who want to take knowledge in something that might happen to be suitable for their assignments or projects. While there are tips, tricks and advices to easily approach Illustration, this book can also serve as a source of inspiration, a beginner guide to the up-and-coming generation of young Vietnamese illustrators.

Why was this book made? Trinh Tran Thai Duy - the author of this book - has an undying passion for Illustration. He wanted to make something remarkable about this specific field while he could still do so during university time. When Duy finally graduates, he would want to work within the Illustration field and be able to share what he had learned to future Illustrators. Coincidentally, he happened to take up a course that focused on book-making with the topic “Print is not dead”. Duy realised that this was his chance to turn his passion into a real living, breathing project. He started to make this book with all of his best effort.

Book’s Organization First is a table of content to lead you through this book in the right way. It gives you page numbers, titles of each field and so on.

Next is an introductory section with the definition of Illustration.

Thirdly, a presentation of some of the finest artworks of Vietnamese Illustrators, along with their information. The illustrators give advices based on their experiences with illustrating.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Trinh Tran Thai Duy is learning Digital Media Design at RMIT University in Vietnam. He is approaching his final semesters before going onto an internship.

Since junior high school, Duy had realised that he was capable of drawing. This talent was further encouraged by Doan Minh Tu - his best friend. Tu’s works were also featured in this book. Despite that, Tu never gave Duy any compliments, on the contrary, he used to criticize Duy whenever Duy showed him his finished artworks. This motivated Duy to improve his skills even more.

Duy had never tried to make a book before, therefore this was the first time he ever worked on something like this. He had made a lot of plans and had many consultations with his lecturer as well as his printing shop to make sure that everything stayed on track. On the other hand, Duy had to find and contact illustrators to collect their information and artworks.

HISTORY OF ILLUSTRATION IN VIETNAM

Propaganda Propaganda - an early modern art movement in Vietnam - used to be ubiquitous in the 1940s Vietnam. Before 1945, Propaganda was used for marketing and advertising purposes. But after the success of the August Revolution, there were many famous artists who stood up for the revolution in Vietnam. This trend brought about many artworks to advocate as well as to support the fighting spirit of Vietnamese military forces. During peacetime, Propaganda is used for family planning and social awareness campaigns. Propaganda could appear on billboards, in newspapers and lecture books. Nowadays,

(Manhhai, 2015)

its appearance has been reduced, replaced with digitally manipulated photographic advertisements which are more appropriate with modern times.

SATIRICAL PAINTING//

Satirical Painting Satirical painting has always been popular. They appeared on newspapers to convey intentions towards wars, corruptions, inflations, or bad social behaviours. Most of the time satirical paintings are used for entertaining purposes, to metaphorically express social problems in comedic ways that have hidden lecturing messages. They are welcomed by readers and audiences of all ages. Paintings with only black and white colors can be found easily in traditional newspapers. After the popularization of colorprinting, more colored satirical paintings can be found in digital magazines, flyers and posters.

This masterpiece was created 2 years ago, when I really needed money to buy a new game console so I participated in a character design contest, my aim was to win the first place.

Luckily, the contest was not so big and there were bunch of noobs, I had three designs and two of them won the first and second places.

The junkyard girl concept was borrowed from Japanese samurai Sanada Yukimura. I tried to created his armor from waste likes tire, old CDs, box and rope and painted

them with red. Later I found out tire was too heavy to wear on like that, my character might have some kind of super power. Her face was inspired from the art style of Animal Crossing, a cute and easy game.

Boo’s Characters Design Contest This picture is going to be a cover of a book in Tu’s design of the contest. There are 6 models were created from an original one which is a junkyard girl.

I had to give up on true pixel art and do some tricks. As you can see, it may seem to be perfect pixel art but if you look carefully, it is not, but who cares?

ILLUSTRATOR: ARTWORK

ICE This one just happen to me while I got an artblock. I just randomly sketched out somehow it become. It was a fun experience because I get to try new brushes and colour palettes. My first time trying to draw using monochrome colours, I used blue tone for this work since blue is one of my most favorite colour. As the blue I think of ice, than later this piece shows a character represent “ice”. She is an half demon with ability to use ice, I chose element such as horn, claw, fur cape,... to express my idea. I later on played around more with colours by using red contrast to make her stands out from the cold blue. This work was inspired from a game character from “Chain Chronicle”. The work still got many problems that need to be fixed but for me, I am quite happy with it.

FRONT: SAKURA TIME I created these one year ago, when I attended my first interactive class from RMIT. I made this work for my second assignment: “portfolio website”. I wanted to create a great homepage screen using my artwork, so I decided to make things that represent myself. I created a persona and used it as “me” in the work. This time I tried using black and white colours only, then line and black fill colour. At first, I intended to make a series of this but I didn’t have much time until the deadline, so in the end I only had two.

The names of the characters derived from Morpheus (god of dreams) and Phobetor (god of nightmares). I’m really inspired by the character design of this game, the designs are unique but really consistent throughout the game. When I created this work, the feeling I wanted to strive for is dreamy and soft. My concept is Morphe and Phoebe were going on a night journey under beautiful moonlight.

I really like drawing short hair girl. the color of this painting has been adjusted quite mild, not bitter like panels I painted earlier. Here I also tested a lot of new brushes and color ways. Contours of brush showed quite eye-catching texture and created tradition feeling for this painting. Also the small details in the picture are also pushing up better. For example, the red stain pattern of the girl’s lips or how the color change at the wall behind.

To be a concept artist is not only about to draw wonderful artworks or to create epic scenes. It needs a wide range of knowledge of everything, which means you need to research, read books, and artbooks, go travel and experiment it with your own eyes and senses. Moreover, you should constantly practice your skills such as linearts, shapes, and value control. The job could be boring for a newbie, you may have to draw a hundred of shields. 5 days a week, or sometimes you have to do some other not-related-to-drawing tasks at the studio but those tanks train your skill effectively.
