The Syrian Civil War has become the most serious humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. For seven years, many civlians of Syria were forced to leave from their homes, trying to flee from warfare.

Accoring to UNHCR’s latest statistics, since March 15, 2017, there has been over 11 million Syrian civilians who have became refugees; roughly half the population of Taiwan. About 5 million of refugees have successfully registered by UNHCR. 2 million refugees have found asylum in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. 2.9 million are in Turkey and around 30 thousand are located in Northern Africa. Most of them don’t have jobs. （R

We hope that the Syrian Civil War gets as much attention as the other international incidents.
Las Vegas Shooting 2017
In 2015, Paris was under attack, and in 2017 London Tube Attack and the Las Vegas Shooting Incident has started a wave of awareness around the world. Instagrammers from all over the world has posted phrases such as #prayforparis, etc., as a way to show their support. But since 2011—the year the war in Syria has started—they have been forgotten by the world. We believe that the people of the world deserve the equal human rights, and everyone should be treated the same—no matter what country they’re from. We want to help those—who are unaware of the news—understand more of what’s going on in Syria, bringing in more support globally.

We realized that those around us—Taiwanese—are mostly unaware of what is currently going on in Syria. We are aware that the Taiwanese international news hardly covers any news regarding Syria’s crisis. Therefore, we can conclude that Taiwan lacks interest for this issue. We do hope the Taiwanese could become aware of the issue that is going on, and take part in the international crisis.

GREECE
Through research, we have found out that most of the refugees have taken the dangerous journey of traveling by sea to reach the shores of Greece, also leaving tens of thousands of lifejackets behind. And therefore, they have created a negative impact on the Greek environment.

Through design, we can upcycle most of lifejackets into products for the commercial industry.

Through materials research , we have concluded that lifejackets were able to upcycled into comsumable products. We wanted to be to reuse the lifejacket’s materials it’s fullest extent, and not effect the products outer appearance. The durable foam can used to make accessories for consumer electronics. The water-resist cloth can be used to create simple bags. The idea of creating travel-use bags came from the movement of the refugees.

We had a lot of issues when it came to designing this system. Are we to collect the lifejackets ourselves? Do refugees only need short-term charity fund? Are these upcycled products for regular consumers or reufgees themselves? Where should these products be sold? We did research on multiple local charities and foundations and took more uderstanding to their core concepts. We hope to coorperate with them in this way. 18

In the beginning we wanted to create a pair of shoes for refugees out of lifejackets. Though shoes were for temporary use, we also wanted to look for a better way to help refugees; giving them job opportunities. We stopped the shoe project due to the production being too complicated and the cost of the shoe bottom surpassing our budget.
