FAITH in HARMONY with DANIELLE STEPHENS MCMILLAN

aith and creativity often intertwine, and few individuals embody this blend as beautifully as Danielle Stephens McMillan. As the founder of THE Record Label Music Group (THE RLMG), her journey stands as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of music and the divine inspiration that drives her mission. Beginning her path as a young pianist in Ohio, she has evolved into a dedicated mentor for aspiring artists. Danielle’s narrative is one of passion and purpose, marked by an unwavering commitment to uplifting others through the arts. A profound awareness of God's favor lies at the heart of her journey, unlocking opportunities beyond her wildest dreams and inspiring her to use her talents for the greater glory of God's Kingdom. Danielle’s musical journey began at the tender age of five when she

learned classical piano. From those early days, her love for music blossomed, leading her to serve as a lead singer and choir director within her church community. “Music, art, and creativity are the languages of my heart,” Danielle shares. “They are the strongest vehicles to exhibit my purpose and calling.” With over two decades of experience in the music industry, Danielle has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Fred Hammond and Israel Houghton. This rich background not only shaped her understanding of the creative and business aspects of music but also laid the groundwork for her to establish THE RLMG. Her commitment to excellence and faith has positioned her to be a guiding light for aspiring artists. Her career spans luxury retail, where she honed her leadership skills before merging them with her passion for music. Today, Danielle finds joy in mentoring youth and budding artists, helping them unlock their God-given talents. As a student at Full Sail University, she is further equipping herself to build a thriving empire of businesses in the arts for the Kingdom of God. She believes that investing in others is essential, fostering a new generation of creatives who can share their unique stories and perspectives through their art. The realization that being a record executive was her calling unfolded over years of diverse experiences. “I began my journey in the late 1990s, contributing to albums, live performances, and media events,” she recalls. It was during the pandemic that Danielle discovered her true purpose, launching songwriting camps to cultivate a community of creatives. “Creating these camps opened my eyes to the potential of collaboration and support among artists,” she explains. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for THE RLMG,

where her mission became clear: to nurture talent and serve a higher purpose in a challenging industry. “I found myself solving problems and providing solutions that exceeded my expectations.” Every journey has its hurdles, and Danielle's has been no exception. Balancing her creative vision with the practicalities of running a label has posed significant challenges. “Building THE RLMG without major capital or extensive experience requires strategic thinking and resilience,” she admits. One of the biggest obstacles she faces is combating the stigma that equates "secular" with "ungodly." Danielle is passionate about creating a space where authentic stories and lifestyles can be expressed freely. “We believe in the possibility of new genres that resonate with diverse audiences while reflecting our beliefs,” she emphasizes. For Danielle, experiencing God’s favor has been transformative. “It’s about being taken from a small-town girl in Ohio and placed in rooms with history makers,” she reflects. This divine favor has opened doors she never thought possible, allowing her to serve others and showcase the brilliance of creativity. “It feels like carrying the legacy of my ancestors onto a global stage,” she shares. “God’s favor is an invitation to go further and deeper than I ever thought possible.” This sense of purpose fuels her passion as she strives to reflect God’s glory through her work. After taking the leap into her current path, Danielle’s confidence in her purpose has crystallized. “Now, I know beyond any doubt that this is exactly what I am meant to do,” she affirms. Every experience has prepared her for the mission ahead, allowing her to thrive in building a community that empowers creatives. “I’m here to make history, to pave a path for artists carrying God’s

heart,” she asserts. “This is not just business; it’s ministry—an extension of my mission to reflect God, mentor others, and help them grow spiritually and creatively.” Looking ahead, Danielle is excited about several upcoming projects, including a holiday compilation album featuring a diverse roster of artists. Additionally, she is developing a creative arts school that nurtures fresh talents in a faith-based environment. “We want to create a system that supports future generations,” she expresses. To aspiring creatives, Danielle offers heartfelt encouragement: “Your gifts have a divine purpose. Trust that God has equipped you for this journey.” She emphasizes the importance of resilience and community. “Surround yourself with supportive individuals, and remember that every step, even the missteps, is a crucial part of the process.” “Stay true to your passion,” she concludes. “While becoming, remain humble, and always keep your faith at the forefront of everything you do. You are never alone on this journey.” Readers can support Danielle and THE RLMG by following their work on social media. While their website is under construction, they actively share updates on Instagram, inviting the community to engage with their vision. “Your support helps us uplift artists and build a global community of creatives,” she encourages. Danielle Stephens McMillan’s story is one of faith, perseverance, and creativity. Her commitment to uplifting others through THE RLMG exemplifies the profound impact that one individual can have on the lives of many, paving the way for a new era in the music industry. With her unwavering dedication, Danielle not only inspires the next generation of artists but also serves as a living testament to the incredible things that can happen when one walks in faith and embraces their divine calling.

unimaginable ways. Facing a life-threatening experience during childbirth, she endured multiple blood transfusions due to a uterine rupture, which led to an emergency hysterectomy. Despite these harrowing experiences, Essence emerged with a deeper trust in God’s plan and a profound gratitude for life. Each obstacle taught her that her struggles could inspire others to find their strength. Driven by a commitment to uplift others, Essence encourages mothers to “Just Breathe.” This mantra emphasizes that resilience and faith can guide them through tough circumstances. Alongside her advocacy work, she actively participates in her children’s education, serving as Vice President of the Parent Leadership Committee at their school. Essence Keys wears many professional hats: author, entrepreneur, coach, singer, actress, and speaker. Her journey began at just 9 years old when she performed on Showtime at the Apollo, igniting her multifaceted career. As an author, her book, You Got This Mommy, Just Breathe: How To Pivot With Purpose, reached #1 on Amazon, serving as both a personal testimony and a practical guide for mothers seeking peace amid chaos. In partnership with her husband, Stephen, she cofounded Expedient Tax Service, successfully operating it for over 12 years. Their recent speaking engagement in Dubai provided Essence with a platform to share her inspiring message with countless women. Her entrepreneurial journey is

rooted in a desire to uplift others. Meeting Stephen expanded her vision and ignited a commitment to building a lasting legacy for their family. Together, they identified an opportunity to empower their community by offering tax services that help clients take control of their financial futures. Essence’s work has garnered recognition in various media outlets, including WVON1690 Radio and CEO Monthly UK. She was honored as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of Illinois in 2023 and was featured on the front page of the Austin Voice. Additionally, she was included in Marquis’s Who’s Who of America for 2024. In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits, Essence proudly holds the title of reigning International Mrs. Midwest USA and was awarded 1st Runner-up in the Mrs. USA pageant, along with the People’s Choice Award. Competing at this level has reaffirmed her belief in her inner strength and potential. Through these platforms, she inspires women, especially mothers, to pivot with purpose and embrace their God-given potential. Essence faces the challenges of balancing her roles as a wife, mother, businesswoman, and pageant competitor. The pressure to evolve while staying authentic can be overwhelming. However, her faith helps her navigate these challenges, reminding her that she doesn’t have to bear the weight alone. God has been central to every chapter of Essence's life. She never imagined becoming a published author, and witnessing her book's rapid success has felt

miraculous. As she embraces new opportunities—whether on the pageant stage, promoting her book, or inspiring women globally—her faith remains her anchor. Essence believes that God has granted her a platform to turn trials into testimonies, serving as a beacon for others. Essence is thrilled to promote her new book in Barnes & Noble stores, sharing her message with mothers on transforming struggles into strengths. Her mission to impact 100,000 women with her 6 Ways to Pivot with Purpose method is a passion project she eagerly expands. Her advice is simple: trust the process, have faith, and don’t be afraid to pivot. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth, and every setback can lead to a comeback. By trusting in God’s plan, keeping a clear vision, and remembering to “just breathe,” she imparts a message of hope and resilience.

COURAGE with LAQUISHA LOVE

18 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

MIRACLES STILL HAPPEN

O

n a chilly May 1, 2022, Laquisha Love, a passionate photographer in the Chicagoland area, found herself embarking on a journey that would forever transform her life. While capturing beautiful moments for a family outdoors, she felt an unsettling flutter in her chest. Initially dismissing it as a minor inconvenience, Laquisha continued her day, unaware that this fleeting sensation would lead to a lifealtering revelation. As the days passed, that flutter evolved into an oppressive pressure, overshadowing her thoughts and daily activities. Sleepless nights followed, during which she felt compelled to write down what she feared might be her last words to her loved ones. The weight of uncertainty loomed heavily, and in her darkest hours, she sensed a gentle pull of divine hope urging her to seek answers. In a courageous move, Laquisha reached out to a trusted nurse practitioner friend, who insisted she visit the emergency room. Taking this advice to heart, she made her way to the hospital, where a series of tests awaited her. When the doctor delivered the news, Laquisha’s world shattered: a large mass was discovered in front of her heart. In that moment, time stood still, and fear flooded her being. “How could this be happening?” she thought, her mind racing with concerns for her children and her loving husband. Her admission to the

hospital coincided with a heart-wrenching Mother’s Day, filled with uncertainty and fear. Awaiting the thoracic surgeon’s visit, Laquisha clung to the hope that the findings would ultimately turn out to be a minor scare. However, as the days unfolded, a biopsy confirmed her worst fears: Stage

2 Mediastinal Large B-cell NonHodgkin Lymphoma. Sitting beside her son during the call that delivered this devastating diagnosis, she fought to contain her tears, grappling with the overwhelming fear of leaving her family. Yet amid despair, a flicker of resilience ignited within her spirit, fueled by love.

The news rippled through her family like a sudden storm. Laquisha observed her husband struggle to maintain his composure while grappling with his own fears for her well-being. Breaking the news to their children was particularly painful; her son remained blissfully unaware, while her daughter was engulfed in tears. Yet even in the shadow of sorrow, love poured in from family and friends. They surrounded her with prayers, supportive calls, and generous acts of kindness, providing meals and emotional sustenance. Their unwavering presence became a living testament to God’s faithfulness, reminding Laquisha that she was never alone in her struggle. Navigating the trials of treatment, Laquisha faced profound challenges, especially with the physical changes brought on by chemotherapy. Watching her hair fall away was a significant struggle, deeply impacting her sense of identity. It felt as though a part of her womanhood was being stripped away. Yet amid these challenges, she turned to her faith, drawing strength from God. Each time she felt weak or lost, she reminded herself of her purpose: to be a loving mother and wife for her children, who were navigating their own transitions in life. Love, fortified by faith, propelled her through even the darkest days. Her photography business also faced hardships, forcing her to take a step back from being behind the camera. As a mompreneur, the thought of disappointing clients weighed heavily on her. However, with the unwavering support of her husband and friends, Laquisha gradually returned to her passion for capturing memories. In those moments behind the camera,

God whispered to her during quiet moments of prayer, reminding her that there was life beyond cancer—a future filled with hope and promise. In her recovery process, Laquisha discovered the importance of community. The outpouring of love from

friends, family, and even acquaintances served as a reminder of the strength that comes from togetherness. Whether through simple messages of encouragement or home-cooked meals, each gesture reinforced her belief that she was surrounded by a network of support. It became clear that her journey was not hers alone; it was a collective effort of love and faith.

Laquisha learned that her experiences could serve as a beacon for others navigating their own battles. Today, Laquisha stands as a source of inspiration, celebrating her victory over cancer. She recognizes her recovery as a living miracle, a reminder that God still performs wonders in our lives. With a heart overflowing with gratitude, she encourages those facing health challenges to trust their instincts and seek help promptly. “Our bodies speak to us for a reason,” she shares, urging others to listen closely to their inner voice and act when something feels amiss. Reflecting on her journey, Laquisha emphasizes the importance of faith. She learned that even when she felt abandoned or overwhelmed, God was always present, guiding her through the darkness. She recalls moments during her treatment when peace found her in prayer, washing over her like a soothing balm. Those moments became her anchor, helping her navigate the turbulent waters of illness and recovery. Laquisha's story serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty that can emerge from life’s trials—a testament to faith, love, and the unwavering support of a community. As she continues to

share her journey, she remains committed to uplifting others, inspiring hope and resilience in those who may find themselves in similar situations. She believes that every struggle can lead to a greater purpose, and she is determined to shine a light on that truth. Her journey is far from over. While she cherishes the victory of being cancer-free, she remains vigilant about her health. Laquisha now advocates for regular check-ups and awareness about symptoms, urging others to be proactive in their health journeys. She understands the importance of listening to one's body and encourages everyone to trust their instincts, just as she did when she sought help for her initial symptoms. Ultimately, Laquisha’s lens— both literal and metaphorical— has shifted. She now sees life through a clearer, more vibrant perspective. Her experiences have taught her that even in moments of fear and uncertainty, there is always potential for beauty and grace. Life, after all, is a series of snapshots, and with each new day, Laquisha continues to capture moments of courage, resilience, and unyielding faith. BEHIND the 'SEEMS' Parachurch Ministry of Dinorah Peña Shines New Light Written by TONI E. EMEHEL

26 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

LET YOUR LIGHT SHI NE

S

he sounded happy. She seemed to have it all: wealth, public acclaim, a husband and business partner… a 13-year-old daughter. I was envious of her. Yet she, the creator of the eponymous handbag, Kate Spade, hanged herself in the bedroom of her Manhattan apartment from a red scarf, according to highlights streamed from various news reporting agencies covering the end-of-life journey of renowned designer, Kate Spade. The Kate Spade story is, perhaps, one of the best illustrations of how and why the spiritual fragility of women often goes unnoticed. Behind all that seems good in the happy-go-lucky reels of life, exists

of refuge for a lifestyle of fear; a life of honor for a mindset of hopelessness; and a life of living under God’s promises for a life built on lies told by the enemy who comes to kill, steal and destroy. Dinorah recounts of her own life, “I have been enduring a season of long suffering. It all started in August 2023. Feelings of anxiety, shame, unforgiveness and fear - I have battled it all. Then one day in December 2023, I literally fell to my knees and began to cry out to God. I had had enough of trying to manage the unsettled feelings deep inside of me on my own. I told myself, ‘I can't do this anymore. That's it. I give up!’ I asked God, ‘What do you want me to do? I surrender.’”

"Live like Christ to shepherd others closer to Him."

This encounter marked Dinorah’s full surrender to the Lord, much DINORAH PEÑA like Peter in John 21:15-17. Like Peter, God changed an alarming reality that many Dinorah’s awareness of Him into women silently battle: “Suicidal statements of love through acts of ideation. Unforgiveness. Shame. obedience. As a result, Dinorah Depression. Unbelief. Long sufferwas led to create a safe space to ing… and the list goes on and on,” draw others closer to Him. Dinorah suggests Dinorah Peña, founder reflects how her journey came full of Bodega7, an entertainment and circle, “I gave my life to Christ in production agency, and Seed Sow 2014. It's been 10 years now, and Harvest, an emerging parachurch I can truly say that my life has ministry in Los Angeles. This is been changed. Since giving my life why parachurch ministries like to Christ, I have evangelized and Seed Sow Harvest are so important ministered in my own way every as a support arm to the brick-andplace that I have been. In 2020, mortar church. Seed Sow Harvest I felt God pressing me for more, was born out of Dinorah's realizabut I rejected Him. Every single tion that she needed to submit her assignment that God gave me, life fully to God. I rejected. Throughout my life I There are times in our lives learned to hide behind the scenes. when we are often blinded by all Whether it was choosing a career that seems too big for God. As that is always behind the scenes a result, we exchange a lifestyle or whether it's from my childhood

experience of not feeling seen in my household, I have never been at the forefront of anything. So, from childhood to adulthood, I developed an insecurity from always being behind the scenes. I learned how to manage being out of sight.” Dinorah continues, “While I allowed my rejection of what God was calling me to do because of the insecurities I had developed about myself; I was actually expressing my distrust in God. Instead of doing what I truly felt God was calling me to do, I would do what felt safe for me. Safe for me at that time was posting a picture on social media with a spiritual or encouraging caption on it. I could not see that God was calling me to something far greater.” Scripture reminds us through the life of King Saul that partial obedience is dismissed by God as disobedience. Here, God was inviting Dinorah into something more a greater relationship with His son, Jesus Christ. However, she focused on her perceived insecurities, which were lies from the enemy aimed to distance her from God. The feelings of anxiety and fear she experienced were not produced by insecurities, rather by a simple question whispered by God to stir her innermost being, ‘Do you love me?’ This is the same question that Christ asked Peter in John 21:15. Like Peter, Dinorah answered in her own way, affirming her love for God. In that moment, she completely surrendered her life to Him with a question, “What do you want me to do?” God’s answer to Dinorah is the same as He commanded Peter once Peter affirmed his love to the Father, ‘Take care of my sheep… Shepherd my sheep… Feed my sheep.’ It is amazing to see the hand

"Fear exposes the areas in your life where you do not trust God." —DINORAH PEÑA of God at work in the lives of those called to be His hands and feet in the earth. Dr. Myles Munroe once said, “The longer children are on earth, the more likely they are to forget the purpose that they were sent here to fulfill.” Reflecting on her childhood, Dinorah recalls, “When I was younger, I used to say that I wanted to be a teacher. I always thought that I would be in a classroom teaching English because I loved to read books. Then, as I got older, my thinking shifted. Growing up my thoughts went from being a teacher to an attorney. By the time I got to college, it was journalism and public relations. life until I realized that I wasn’t. While the career I created seemed so far from that little girl's first dream, teaching others the Word of God through Seed Sow Harvest is where God was ultimately leading me. That little girl's dream of being a teacher is being realized.” Through her ministry, Seed Sow Harvest, Dinorah often tells women that, “I can offer you 900 scriptures to read on issues that you may be going through, but if the root is not taken care of, it will eventually expose an area in your life where you don't trust God.” In addition to providing scriptural references to others seeking her guidance through Seed Sow Harvest, Dinorah offers the following practical steps to fully trust God with your life:

1. Seek Intimacy with Christ. Intimacy with Christ is what's going to help you get to the understanding you need to overcome life’s challenges. 2. Trust in God. At the root of every negative thing that seems to be overtaking you, 99% of the time, it’s tied to an area in your life that you are not trusting God in. Hand it over to God and trust in Him. 3. Spend Time with God. Be intentional about spending time with God so that He can speak to you, and so that you can hear the revelation that He wants to deliver to you. 4. Insist on the Word of God. Go to the scriptures to read and understand what God’s word says

LET YOUR LIGHT SHI NE

"Intimacy with Christ gives you understanding." —DINORAH PEÑA about the issues that you are going through. Then follow His commandments. 5. Shine the Light of God. Live like Christ to shepherd more people closer to Him. God has not called us to be sunny on the outside, while living shady on the inside. We have all been called to let His light shine in and through us in a unique way. My encouragement to you is to let nothing disrupt your intimacy with Christ. Resist what ‘seems’ and deny the urge to believe lies that the enemy will tell you to destroy your belief in God. As followers and believers of Christ we are commanded to live by faith not by sight. In this same vein, Matthew 5:16 admonishes, ‘You’re here to be light. You must be sure that your light shines well. Then you will give light to other people. They will see all the good things that you do. Then, they will praise God, who is your Father in heaven.’

A An ancient Greek philosopher once said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river, and he is not the same man." Pause for a moment and let that sink in: “No Man [nor woman] ever steps in the same river twice, for IT IS NOT THE SAME RIVER, and HE [NOR SHE] IS NOT THE SAME PERSON.” As lead writer for MB Magazine, I recently had the opportunity to sit down with two of the most influential Christian leaders in the Kingdom for a candid discussion on marriage. Although this feature is about Dr. Jamal H. Bryant - famed activist, author, Senior Pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church (one of the largest African American churches in the United States) and acclaimed minister of the gospel - and businesswoman, Dr. Karrianne [Karri] Bryant (formally Karri Turner), it ultimately reveals the evidence of God’s hand, molding and shaping them individually while knitting their hearts together in a way that gives God alone the glory for their past, their present and their future. So, set aside any preconceptions you may have about this couple, and instead, lean into what you know about God as you absorb some major takeaways from our discussion.

THE JOURNEY TO YES

R

eflecting on the bible’s story of creation, we find that every time that God created something new in Genesis 1, He declared it

to be good. Yet, it’s not until we get to Genesis 2, that we see something declared ‘not good’ in the eyes of God. Genesis 2:18 reads in one translation, “And the Lord said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone; I shall make him a sustainer beside him.’” Sustainer. I love this choice of word used because it invites readers to gain a deeper understanding of the role of a wife in her husband’s life. MB MAGAZINE: How did you come

to know that Karri is your wife? JAMAL: “At the last minute, I decided

to attend Karri’s graduation, where she would receive her doctorate degree. I found myself there, holding the camera as her name was called. She began walking across the stage and I heard the voice of God speak clearly to me, ‘Are you an idiot? I have placed this right in front of your face, and you have missed it.’ Every conversation confirmed to me that Karri is truly a gift from God, on a level I had never experienced before. Being with Karri is like holding a winning Powerball ticket. You don't know what it's like to win 35 billion dollars, but you can imagine it - you can think about what you're going to do with it, where you're going to go, and how it will change your life. It’s the Willy Wonka golden ticket in the chocolate bar, granting you full access to the factory without having a workday. Truly, I look forward to discovering new dimensions of who she is and unveiling parts of myself that have long been closed.”

L

ike Adam, Jamal’s eyes were closed to Karri’s role in his life until he was ready to receive her and see her as God does: a sustainer to walk alongside him in understanding, a source of support to intercede on his behalf, and a covering in prayer. She is an affirmer, poised to recognize his strengths and speak life into them. Most importantly, Karri is his wife - a safe haven, a wellspring of renewal, and a fresh anointing for his journey ahead. The moment Jamal opened his

eyes to see Karri as God sees her is the day that marked his transition from living under God’s grace to a life of God’s favor. Interestingly, as Jamal reflects on the moment God opened his eyes, he distinctly recalls holding a camera in his hands. This detail holds great significance. A camera is an instrument used as a light box to selectively isolate the flow of light allowing only what is chosen to be viewed through the lens. In this moment, God used the camera to guide Jamal’s focus, clarifying his calling to husbandry in this season. It became clear that Jamal is called to a greater purpose, one that he cannot accomplish in a state of singleness, the results would simply not be the same. Now that his eyes are open, he sees Karri in the Spirit, with a profound knowledge that she was created to be his wife. MB MAGAZINE: What’s it like being

on the other side of Jamal’s love? KARRI: “I feel like I’ve opened my

greatest dream book. Everything that I could have imagined for my life, I see embodied in him. Truly, I couldn’t have designed a better partner. People often see just one side of who he is, one dimension, but they miss the warmth, the kindness and the humor that makes him who he is. He is the most hilarious person on the planet, always making me laugh. With him, there’s no need for vitamins - he’s a natural burst of energy, a constant source of joy. He is just everything good. He is every place I have wanted to go. He is every good thing I have wanted to explore. He is every great tasting food that I have wanted to have. He is my favorite sense. Everything that I could ever desire. Everything that I could long for or dream of is literally wrapped up in this one person. Then, the cherry on top is that he is so brilliant. (Dr. Bryant gesturing… ‘Umph, umph, umph!’ while Dr. Turner continues…) He can go from Shakespeare to…” JAMAL: (Interrupting with an utter) “Oh! (then something inaudible with

KARRI: “No, but he is. He is a think-

married shortly after graduating. I was around 25 or 26 years old at that time. Since I didn't come from a background of marriage, I had to figure it out on my own. I knew that there were certain things that I desired for my marriage, but I had not matured at that point in life to understand the fullness of what marriage is. The Bible tells us that there is a level of maturity that it takes for marriage and also a level of grace that comes with that maturity, both of which

er. He is so brilliant, and there is not a genre of conversation that we cannot talk about. I always tease him because he can go from quoting some of my favorite theologians, like Bonhoeffer or Tillich, all the way to talking about Biggie or Tupac. His palette is just beyond belief. I love his vocabulary.” JAMAL: “Oh, my goodness…” (Ja-

mal blushingly interjects as joy filled laughter fills the room.) KARRI: “It's hard to have disagree-

ments with him because he'll say something that I may have never heard before or a word that I love. When this happens, it kind of stops me in my tracks. Instead of being angry, I discovered it kind of turns me on. Now, other folks might not care about those things, but he means everything to me. I believe that experiencing that level of love out loud is truly living my dream.”

I

t is mind-blowing to really see how differently God works in our lives when we properly conceptualize the relationships that He gives us access to grow and develop in. Karri could have said no, but instead, she said, “Yes.” Her “yes” not only brought an overflow of God’s blessings into her life, but also into the life of her husband. Similarly, Jamal could have stayed on the run, continuing to ignore the gift that God placed before him. Instead, he surrendered his heart to God’s will, having no idea of God’s restorative plan for his life.

PRAYER IN MARRIAGE

MB MAGAZINE: How have your life

experiences shifted your perspective of love and marriage? KARRI: “I dated in college and got

me to move in marriage much differently.”

K

arri has hit the nail on the head. As a Bible teacher for over 20 years, I have never seen an instance in the Bible where women prayed, and God did not eventually answer. Yet, there are several occurrences in the Bible where God did not answer prayers of men. From King David and the Apostle Paul to Psalmists in Psalms 88 and Psalms 89 [Ezrahites Ethan and Herman]. Even Jesus himself experienced unanswered prayer. 1 Peter 3:7, is the only passage that I could find in the Bible that makes it clear that the power link between prayer and marriage is a spiritually ma-

Elect Lady: /noun/ One who is called, chosen, selected, abides in true Christian love and loved in the Truth. I lacked during my first marriage. Through divorce and life experiences over the years, I believe that I have now matured to not only understand grace, but to have grace for myself. This has allowed me to establish what my expectations should be of my husband. I believe that one of the things that I did not realize as a young wife was the power of intercession. Now, I understand that intercession in the context of marriage makes the difference in how I show up in my marriage to Jamal. So, maturity at its core is the key. At 26, I didn't know myself, which made things very difficult. When you don't know yourself, you have expectations of others that they can't live up to. That’s because you yourself are not living up to the expectations that you desire of others. Where I am at now, I am experiencing a different type of grace, a different type of rhythm, and a different type of maturity that allows

ture wife. She embodies God’s favor in her husband’s life. That is why Karri is an ‘Elect Lady.’ The distinction? An elect lady receives her position and prominence from being chosen by God (see. 2 John 1— title tied directly to the church). In contrast, First Ladies get their power and prominence from being chosen by man. One might ask, ‘Why is this important?’ It is important because, as mature Christians, we must be mindful of the agreements that we make with the world that operate to usurp the power of God in our lives and relationships. A First Lady takes her direction and instruction from the people who gave her the title, while an Elect Lady takes her direction and instruction from God through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, her accountability lies with God, not the people. When a man is called to honor God in the role of husbandry, he must stew-

ard his role well. How he treats his wife will determine the strength of his connection to God. The Bible reveals in 1 Peter 3:7 that a husband experiencing hindered prayers may be facing this as a direct result of mistreating his wife.

MARRIAGE IS THE WORK OF ONENESS MB MAGAZINE: The marriage and

process of oneness is as unique to individual couples as fingerprints are to an individual at birth. What has God shown you as His purpose for your marriage? KARRI: “Marriage, at its core, begins

with God connecting two people in ways that they could not or would not have connected themselves. And so, I believe that the fundamental thing for us is that God has brought us together.

T

here was an upswing in marriages in the black community after the election of former President Barack Obama. During his second term, the numbers doubled again in our community. But to see young and emerging relationships now is a rare commodity. Yet, I think that marriage is something that this generation wants. I say to people all the time that we have the largest number of rappers and athletes with public relationships. This generation is getting married older, and finding Christ later. They didn’t grow up in church or attend vacation Bible school; they find God after college and seek a model they never had. I believe that that's the critical space of living out loud. We must live out loud and be the light for people to see how it’s done. Marriage is not a Harlequin romance novel, nor a Lifetime Channel

did you go to a R-rated movie?’ If we go to dinner, they’ll say, ‘People are broke. Why are you eating crab legs?’ If we attend a fashion show, they’ll question ‘Why are you superficial?’ Shakespeare once said, “To thine own self be true.” Understand that while we are pastors, we are also humans. I didn't marry somebody to look like Quaker Oats. I want my wife to be free in her own personality, her own identity and her own taste. That's what drew me to her. We are not living for storefront expectations when we have a stadium assignment for the glory of God.” KARRI: “Adding to that, we are able

to show up that way in public space because that's how we show up to each other in our private lives. What you see are the authentic parts of who we are. Jamal is lively. He is brilliant and charismatic. He is well-dressed. He is

“We must live out loud.” —JAMAL BRYANT We have both gotten a green light from the Father to connect. We are compatible, and that in a way is where our destiny, our purpose, and our personalities align. We genuinely love and like each other… and so, all of those things, I believe, have been connected in a way that God can use for His glory. So, our marriage is ultimately for His glory, allowing us to produce fruit that remains on earth. I believe that is what marriage is at its core.” JAMAL: “Consider what marriage

looks like to a culture without role models. As an eighties baby, when I was growing up, nobody knew who was with who. Marriages were kept secret for record sales and contracts. The disconnect wasn’t seen in the spiritual space. So, those who are on the vanguard of what marriage is are the age of our parents or grandparents.

movie with a ‘happily ever after.’ True examples of the ebbs and flows of marriage are rarely found in such stories. Yet, there is hope in finding true love - even after divorce, heartbreak, depression, or resignation. To be able to say that finding true love is possible… it is only possible with the presence of God. MB MAGAZINE: As senior leaders in

the church, have you had to navigate your relationship in the face of criticism in public spaces? JAMAL: “In this season, the only peo-

ple who can successfully live in a box are those in a casket. You can't live in a box and move. You can't live in the public space that we're in without living for God. So, it doesn't matter where we are, what we do, or what we have on. There will always be critics. If we go to the movie, people will ask, ‘Why

all of these things, because that is naturally who he is. It's not something that he turns on and off. This is who he is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's the same thing with me. I am not your typical pastor. I won't be your typical First Lady. I am comfortable with that. So, whoever is not comfortable with that, it's okay. I believe that people are drawn to different voices and ministries and they need to find spaces where they feel most comfortable. I realize that not everyone will be comfortable with me, but I am anchored in who I am. Because of this, I am growing and learning that the voices of others cannot be louder than the voice of God in my life. I remember the Holy Spirit saying to me years ago, ‘You have to know who you are now, because later you won't have the time to figure it out.’ While I am growing and evolv-

ing as a woman, I will also grow and evolve as a wife and a pastor. I am not looking for others to affirm who I am. I'm clear about that. I will continue to grow. I will continue to stretch, but I'm not showing up saying, ‘I am okay.’ I'm showing up as I am. If you are drawn to that… Amen. If you are not drawn to that… Amen. It will be well either way. Are there moments where people's comments are painful? Sure. Are there moments where people's comments are just downright irritating? Absolutely. But I have learned what is my portion and what is not. So, I'm careful about what I consume and digest from others.” MB MAGAZINE: How does it feel to

be where you are now at this junction of your life?

“We have a stadium assignment for the glory of God.”

JAMAL: “It is very exciting to experi-

ence a model of love that I call, ‘love 2.0,’ where God has allowed a second opportunity. There are so many people who have been cheering from the bleachers saying that they gave up on love and didn't believe that there was another possibility, yet here we are. I believe that our example is what the culture needed. It's one thing to find love when you're in your twenties, but finding a pep in your step when you are in your forties or beyond is something special. I call it, ‘love for grown-ups.’” KARRI: “I agree. There is an unex-

pected hope that has come with our marriage, one that I didn't expect would ignite in people. And so, I think that hope resonates with those who have been married before, divorced, or are searching for love [true love] for the first time. We've gotten so many emails, messages and stories of people who have been renewed in their hope of love because of our story and what we've been able to share. That has been exciting. It has been encouraging, and it just feels really, really good.”

—JAMAL & KARRI BRYANT WHEN THE CHURCH SAYS, “AMEN”

A

story of such significance [a couple’s story of marriage] must not be left to the wilds of the world; rather, it must be shared by the body of Christ and holy scribes with discerning minds to preserve the integrity of one of God’s greatest gifts… the institution of marriage. This brings me to the role of the church in the life of our leaders. Mark 2:23-28 reminds us that even Jesus had followers who did not like Him, yet they followed Him anyway in search of something… anything that they could use to disprove His claims, damage His character, and criticize His ways. Jesus also had a small group of followers whom the Bible refers to as His disciples. They were later called Christians because their

lives outwardly bore the identity and likeness of Christ. Sadly, Jamal and Karri have faced more than their fair share of trolling followers - critics and professed Christians - lurking in the pews and comments section of ministry pages, looking for the slightest opportunity to project an outdated identity upon the couple that falls short of who they are today. When we choose to operate from a state of awareness, we realize that people are constantly changing. Thus, the person we see today is not the same person we saw yesterday. The practice of awareness helps us discern when we are judging someone based on our attachment to an outdated image [the same river] of who you knew them to be in the past, rather than putting forth the effort to see them [not the same river] as they are in the present moment.

nderstand that when critics attack our Christian leaders, we each have a role to play, both individually and collectively. Thus, it’s time that we, the church, come to the table and ask ourselves, ‘How do we understand marriage, both as individuals and as a culture?’ When the church says, “Amen,” it shifts the focus from the character of others, to the character of the church - specifically to those who profess to be children of God. Our personal understanding of marriage will determine how we project our beliefs onto the culture around us. We will either allow the enemy to use us as disruptors, diminishing others’ belief in the institution of marriage when given the opportunity to explain the God difference, or we will use our voices to proclaim God’s blessings over those chosen to honor Him through the covenant of marriage. When the church allows spiritual practices of the weak to seep into sacred spaces, it not only opens the door for the enemy to infil-

Ultimately, this weakens the cause for Christ. 1 Peter 3:15 encourages us to, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks to give a reason for the hope you have… but do this with gentleness and respect.” Be open and

honest with yourself, ‘How does the face of God really show up in your life? Are your conversations wholesome and edifying to the Kingdom, or have your words caused others to doubt the power of God?’ As the people of God, it is not our job to focus on the redemptive past of others. Rather, we are called to set our sights higher by communicating our faith in the power of God to fulfill His promises through the lives of the redeemed. So, the next time you sense or hear someone speaking of a Christian couple in a negative light, realize that it is not about the couple, it’s about destroying belief in the institution of marriage. Likewise, as the church, we have a responsibility to: 1) Shine the light of God. 2) Be the voice of God, spreading the gospel in proper perspective; and 3) Be mindful of the accountability attached to our silent, “Amen” the same as our spoken, “Amen.” God requires more of us. Your unvetted, “Amen” could be the “Amen” that ratifies an agreement which causes others to stumble. Simply put, Jamal and Karri have been handpicked by God to model true love and unity in the body of Christ. Our response should simply be, “Yes” and “Amen” as the promises of God are fulfilled in each of their lives. Congratulations, Jamal and Karri! While it is often very difficult for people to describe the feeling of falling in love, you have effortlessly struck the right chords. It is through the outpouring of God's love that we, as human beings, have the power to share love with one another. Keep love at the forefront of your marriage as God's eternal love empowers you to love in His likeness… Amen. he Gospel according to Mark describes a scene where Christ has just miraculously fed 5,000 men in the desert with two fish and five loaves of bread. He then instructs his disciples to board a boat to meet Him on the other side of the sea while He goes up to a mountain to pray. They board the boat and proceed to cross the sea in obedience to Christ's instructions. However, during their journey, they encounter a vicious storm. This illustrates that you can be in the will of God and still face storms in your life. In the midst of the turbulent winds and raging waves, Christ calmly walks on the water toward the boat carrying his disciples, but they mistake Him for a ghost. How is it that the disciples’ perception of who Christ is becomes distorted in this storm? It is due to context. They allowed the trauma of the storm to cloud their understanding of Him,

which had already been revealed to them in previous contexts. They knew Him as a provider because he had just fed 5,000 men. They recognized Him as a teacher, having learned the principles of the kingdom through the parables he taught. They acknowledged Him as a deliverer who liberated a demon-possessed man from an unclean spirit. They understood Him as a healer after witnessing him heal the woman in the crowd who had suffered from a blood issue for twelve long years. They even knew him as the resurrection after seeing Him raise the daughter of Jairus from her sleep. However, they had never known Him in the context of a storm. Christ needed to reveal His power and deity to His disciples within this context, demonstrating that He is the one to whom the winds and waves obey. He is also the one whose command encourages the hearts of men to take courage and not be afraid amidst the storms. The

DRIVEN BY VISION

M

ind Blowing Magazine's very own Robin V. shines as the creative director and photographer, skillfully guiding the publication's aesthetic and narrative with her unique vision. Her journey of self-discovery and empowerment not only influences her work but also inspires those around her. This segment highlights Robin and her unwavering commitment to uplifting women through her art and personal experiences. As a visionary, she embodies creativity and resilience, demonstrating how aligning with God's purpose can lead to transformative change. Robin's understanding of her life’s purpose began to take shape in her early 30s, particularly after the birth of her son, Carys. This period marked a

pivotal turning point, sparked by health challenges that forced her to reflect deeply on her well-being. The absence of her mother, who passed away at the age of 48, weighed heavily on Robin, serving as a poignant reminder of life's fragility as she navigated this new chapter. It became clear to her that she needed to make significant changes—not just for her health but for her overall sense of fulfillment. Taking charge of her life started with a decision to change her diet. Robin adopted a vegan lifestyle, which not only improved her physical health

but also provided clarity and renewal in her life. This shift prompted her to engage in deeper self-reflection, leading her to examine childhood experiences and recognize patterns in her relationships and self-perception. She came to understand that her tendency to please others and prioritize their needs had drained her, leaving her disconnected from her own identity. During this journey, Robin encountered a transformative book about people-pleasing that resonated deeply with her. It illuminated how her desire for acceptance had shaped her

life, encouraging her to prioritize her own needs and desires for the first time. This inner work, while challenging, was essential for her personal growth. As she navigated this transformative experience, Robin's passion for photography blossomed. Her work became a powerful tool for connection and conversation, allowing her to engage with clients in meaningful discussions about their struggles. She soon discovered that many of the women she photographed were grappling with similar challenges. By sharing advice and encouragement, Robin found that she was not just helping others but also empowering herself in the process. Photography evolved into more than just a profession for Robin; it became a mission to uplift women and foster their self-esteem. Witnessing the transformations of the women she worked with was a turning point, as each session became an opportunity to celebrate their beauty and resilience. Robin recognized that her role as a photographer was not merely to capture images but to create a safe space for women to express themselves, confront their insecurities, and embrace their unique journeys. This profound realization ignited her passion for using her artistry to promote healing and empowerment. Now, Robin’s purpose is clear: she is dedicated to empowering women to show up as their best selves. She encourages them to seek strength from God, reminding them that life’s demands can often lead us to lose sight of who we truly are. Whether faced with the pressures of work, motherhood, or societal expectations, it’s easy to feel disconnected. However, Robin firmly believes that God is always present, offering guidance and support through life’s challenges.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Robin finds immense joy in her role as a mother to her two children, Carys and Believe. They are her greatest treasures, filling her life with laughter, love, and a renewed sense of purpose. Each day, her children inspire her to strive for personal growth, reminding her of the importance of nurturing their dreams and helping them develop into confident, compassionate individuals. This path of self-discovery and empowerment has solidified Robin’s commitment to helping women reconnect with their divine strength. She strives to inspire others

to embrace their unique experiences and prioritize self-care and personal growth. Finding fulfillment and joy in both her work and family life, Robin hopes to continue making a positive impact in the lives of women everywhere. colors. For home cooks working with random ingredients, the first step is to take inventory of what you have in your kitchen. Pro tip: group your ingredients into proteins, vegetables, herbs, and starches. This will help you combine them effectively to create a 5-star quality meal! For example, I just took a look in my kitchen and found some frozen ripe bananas. My immediate thought? Homemade banana bread! Additionally, I discovered a huge bag of flour, just enough butter, baking powder, eggs, and brown sugar. At this point, any extra ingredients I find are just a bonus! This is where your knowledge of ingredients truly shines. What many fine dining restaurants don’t want you to know is that most fancy dishes are surprisingly simple. The secret lies in proper execution and creative plating with thoughtful garnishing. To elevate my banana

bread, I have amaretto liqueur at the bar, some walnuts, and ice cream in the freezer. I decided to candy the walnuts with a hint of salt and whip up an amaretto caramel sauce using the vanilla ice cream as the milk base that caramel requires. Plus, I have two bananas left over from feeding my nephew, so I’ll use one to brûlée and garnish the dish. There’s plenty of room for your creativity to shine in the culinary world. While there are techniques, best practices, and food science to learn, all of that information is just a Google search away! I challenge today’s readers to pull out their aprons and start cooking amazing dishes with family and friends by creating a 5-star meal using only the ingredients you have at home. Don’t forget to post and tag me (@chefvickyskitchen) so I can see your delicious gourmet creations.

Remember, do some research to execute your dish properly, and let your creativity take the lead. Master the tips and tricks in this article, and soon enough, your friends will be calling you “chef” in no time!

The SOLID ROCK: How Having a Biblical Foundation of God Promotes Trust and Peace by TARI COX, M.A.

MANNA FOR THE MIND

M

ore recently than I’d like to admit, I found myself there. Theology intrigued me. Biblical history amazed me. I was a lover of God’s Word, prayer, and intimacy with the Father. Yet, I was collecting and storing away questions, curiosities, and pending thoughts—mysteries that had already been written and were ready to be discovered about God in His Word. Unbeknownst to me, there were parts of my heart that had not yet been transformed. A series of trauma points and a season of humbling led me on a gentle yet assertive journey with the Lord, revealing inconsistencies in my biblical belief systems. God revealed minor cracks in my understanding of biblical theology and how they significantly impacted my ability to trust Him in the deeper capacity that I yearned for. Let me first gently and graciously state that we will always be growing in our understanding and knowledge of God. To journey with Christ is to become more aware of Him daily. We never truly arrive at a total comprehension of this God who is vast and complete in every way beyond measure. However, we are lovingly held to the responsibility to know Him based on what He has already said about Himself, if we so choose. We are encouraged to seek the truth of Him in His Word and instructed to delight in what He has chosen to reveal about Himself. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” — Romans 15:4 ESV I have learned that there is reasoning beyond our understanding for being given the confines of Scripture to know God. As my journey of sanctification has continued, I’ve become more aware of the vitality of my view of God being aligned with how He reveals Himself in His Word. I’ve increasingly realized the reservoir of peace and trust found in simply being immersed in what has already been written. Beginning in my preteen years, I wrote letters to God detailing the internal turmoil, anxieties, and worries I carried with nowhere to lay them. I could conceptualize God, but it would take me some time to arrive at the right understanding that Jesus is the only way to Him. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the

truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” — John 14:6 ESV A concept of eternity was woven into my heart, like it is for all of us. I carried an understanding that there was Someone holding the pieces of my life and its components together, far beyond what I could comprehend. However, I was unaware that much of the peace I lacked and the anxiousness that remained my norm was due to an incomplete view of God based on an improper understanding of Scripture. Attempting to comprehend God’s character, nature, and attributes as broken people will only lead to confusion and aimless frustration apart from His Word. We will discover what we deem to be inconsistencies in God’s character when we observe a holy God, set apart from us, in a way that resembles us. In my relatively short yet intense journey with Christ, I have often found myself prompted by the Holy Spirit to ask questions. I was particularly asked this question as I began studying ideologies, theology, and history that might make one susceptible to a head-knowledge-based relationship with Christ: “Why do you want to know this?” My answer was not only to check my heart posture but to reveal it to me. My answer was simple: we are more likely to trust whom we know. As I’ve been journeying with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and dissecting the Scriptures with like-minded individuals, I’ve discovered several helpful tips to move from a shallow understanding of God to becoming enlightened to who He is as revealed in His Word. 1.

Seek to know what God’s Word says about who He is more than who you are.

This is a tough but essential one. When our foundation rests on anything other than who God says He is, we open ourselves to mental turmoil, destruction, and chaos. If we look for who God says we are more than what He says about Himself, we will eventually encounter a life where we don’t measure up. Christ is the only constant and perfectly consistent One that mankind will ever know. He is immutable, and His kingdom reigns forever. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and

for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” — Matthew 24:35 ESV 2.

ance on the Lord, we can embrace an errorless, biblical framework of Him. “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” — Proverbs 26:12 ESV 5.

Become familiar with how Scripture defines Scripture.

Biblical definitions of commonly used terms give us clarity and wisdom for understanding the context of what Scripture speaks. Conducting word studies and seeking the Hebrew and Greek meanings of the words used are helpful for grasping a passage’s originally intended meaning. Strong’s Concordance is a helpful tool for this.

Seek sound, trusted supplemental resources to aid in biblical understanding.

Resources that are doctrinally sound and biblically accurate can assist in providing context to Scripture. Endorsed resources with helpful commentary and tools include BlueLetterBible.org and Logos Bible Software.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12 ESV

3.

6.

Ask the Holy Spirit to bring understanding to what you don’t understand.

Our efforts to understand God’s Word without dependence on God’s Spirit invite a shallow understanding of God Himself. We must rely on the Spirit of God to bring life and help us know Him rightly through the Scriptures that are written. We exercise this by reading the text and not assuming we are capable of seeing all there is to be seen about it. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” — John 16:13-14 “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” — 1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV 4.

Be humbly willing to be incorrect.

To receive correction on erroneous or incomplete ways that we view God, we must be willing to humbly allow Him to reveal them. Furthermore, we must yield to the process of correction that aligns with the truth of Scripture. A heart that is prideful will remain blind to truth. But with reli-

Journal your curiosities and questions about God and His Word, even the ones that seem insignificant.

I was once indirectly encouraged by a pastor with the following words: “God can handle all of your questions, but He may only answer a few.” As I continue to dive into the depths of theology with the motive to know the God of the universe—my God, who delights when we seek to know Him—I bear this in mind. I have found that keeping a journal to sift through my rawest, most unkempt curiosities and questions cultivates intimacy on this adventure of discovery. Truth has a name—an eternal one. His name is Jesus. He makes Himself accessible to us for our sake. This Jesus made it possible to be reconciled with God the Father. All of Him was required for this, and all of His help is necessary to know Him. As I continue to imperfectly seek to know Him rightly, with a hunger for new depths of love, I prefer to share words with the world that are biblical and true over words that may be beautiful but are incomplete representations of who Jesus is. A heart transformed and yielded to further transformation is required. He invites those who seek to know Him. With this in mind, let us remain eager on a journey of true understanding of the God of the Bible as our solid rock. Photography by Teri Duncan

FIT FOR each other by QUIANNA EASON

hen loving yourself feels right, life is good. But when you become an example for others, it makes life so much better. As an influencer in fitness, wellness, and health, as well as an ambassador of Christ, my purpose is being fulfilled! “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT) My main goal as a believer is to be a disciple for Christ! I know that when I wake up, if God has granted me another day of life, I have purpose! So let’s keep the main thing the main thing: be the example. I want us to dive into living better lives so people can see that taking care of your body and building a relationship with God leads to a better life. Let’s call it being accountable

to one another. I want to share a few tips and ideas to help you improve. First, let’s talk about giving our bodies the nutrients we need. Personally, over the last two years, I’ve had a skin scare that prompted me to research healthier foods to eliminate internal “problems.” Cleaning up my diet has been a top priority. I know that everyone’s body is different and responds to foods uniquely, but I advise you to pay close attention to how your body reacts to different foods. For example, if you eat certain foods and feel sluggish afterward or experience stomach upset, you should probably limit your intake of those specific items. Aim to consume foods rich in nutrients: protein, vitamins, good carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Second, movement is essential. You may not be a gym rat like I am, but movement is crucial for good health. Research suggests we need at least 30 minutes of movement daily. If the gym isn’t your

thing, consider taking a class, joining a community focused on a particular form of exercise, downloading a fitness app, hiking, or going for walks. Movement benefits your cardiovascular health, promotes good blood flow, and enhances your breathing. Physically, you’ll start to tighten your skin, tone your muscles, and sculpt your body. Third, and most importantly, building a solid relationship with God will encourage you to take care of your body. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians

6:19-20 NLT) Giving God the first part of your day and spending quality time with Him—even if it’s just 15 minutes— is a great start. Share your cares, worries, and desires with Him while seeking what He wants you to do each day. I call this giving God my burdens so I can care for His people! Lastly, having an accountability partner is vital. This is someone who will ensure you are reaching your goals, lift you up when you’re struggling, and push you toward greatness. I’ll take my husband, Aaron, as an example; we are that for each other! Since getting married last year, we’ve committed to ensuring we both do our part. It’s a ministry, a covenant.

I want to help you do the same. Let’s ensure you are feeding your body what it needs—not necessarily what it wants (as we know not all food is good for you), moving your body for at least 30 minutes a day, and maintaining a healthy relationship with God. “Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39 NLT) Remember, we’re in this together—me, you, and God. Let’s be better by doing better, not just for ourselves but for one another!

Through her book, A Gift of A Curse, along with her work as a transformational speaker and life coach, Charity encourages others to embrace their own narratives of redemption. Charity grew up on the West Side of Chicago, raised by her adoptive mother and sister. Her early life was fraught with challenges, including feelings of abandonment and rejection from her biological parents. The harsh realities of her environment led to bullying and violence, and at just 16 years old, she faced a traumatic incident when she was stabbed in the face by someone she considered a friend. Despite these trials, Charity displayed remarkable resilience, enduring over 30 arrests,

five felonies, and 13 misdemeanors. She even married her abuser, enduring a nine-year cycle of physical and emotional violence before finally summoning the strength to leave. Throughout her hardships, Charity discovered solace and transformation through her faith. Growing up in the Church of God in Christ, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at a young age. Regular church attendance instilled in her the importance of turning to Jesus in times of trouble. However, at 16, a public humiliation shattered her confidence. Following a deeply embarrassing incident, Charity experienced a crushing loss of self-esteem. Fortunately, her grandmother opened her home to her, offering a safe haven during those dark days. On September 1, 2001, Charity was baptized at Living Word Christian Center, where she encountered the power of the Holy Spirit in a profound and life-changing way. As life’s challenges mounted, Charity learned to cope by leaning on her faith and support system. When overwhelmed, she turned to prayer, reached out to her grandmother for comfort, and found peace in praise and worship music.

Journaling became a vital outlet for her emotions, while gratitude walks, exercising, and self-care— like bubble baths and skincare routines—helped soothe her spirit. During difficult times, the uplifting messages from inspirational figures such as T.D. Jakes and Smokie Norfolk fortified her faith. The phrase “Her Story, His Glory” resonates deeply with Charity. She believes her tests and trials have only made her stronger, and while she shares her story, she gives all glory to God for the victories in her life. Every struggle serves as a testament to His goodness and grace, proving that what the enemy intended for harm, God uses for good. Today, Charity feels a profound sense of purpose. By sharing her testimony, she aims to provide hope to those facing similar challenges, encouraging them to believe in the power of God and their potential. Her life is a living testament that pain can be transformed into strength, reminding everyone that their stories matter. REFLECTION

What is your purpose? What has God specifically called you to?

These profound questions beckon us to explore our existence through the lens of faith. In Colossians 3:1-3, we find a powerful exhortation: “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This passage invites us to prioritize our true life in Christ and to align our focus with heavenly priorities.

Understanding "Things Above" Setting our minds on "things above" means prioritizing God’s concerns over the distractions of this world. We must reflect on what truly excites us, what brings us peace, and what causes us anxiety. Are these feelings rooted in a godly concern? Our essence lies in bringing glory to God in all aspects of our lives.

Living to Bring Glory to Christ In John 17, just before His crucifixion, Jesus reveals His heart in prayer to the Father. He expresses His desire to glorify Him through obedience, stating in verse 4, “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.” Jesus exemplifies perfect obedience and purpose, showing us that, like Him, we are called to discern and fulfill the unique assignments God has given us. But what does it mean to glorify God? It means to honor Him through our actions, praise,

and worship. Romans 12 teaches us that offering our lives as living sacrifices is our true and proper worship. Our existence finds meaning in praising God by fulfilling His purpose for us. 1 Peter 1:13-16 calls us to live with alert minds and holy intentions: “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.” Holiness is dedicated to a divine purpose, perfectly modeled by Christ.

The Heart and Mind Connection As we pursue our purpose, we must examine our hearts and minds. The condition of our heart reveals our desires, while our mind reflects our thoughts. Together, they shape our actions. •

What is the nature of your thoughts? If your thoughts were transcribed, what would they reveal about your mind?

What influences your thoughts? Consider the media you consume, the company you keep, and the agreements you make with your thoughts. Philippians 4:8 instructs us to dwell on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy. These qualities reflect the “things above” that Paul encourages us to focus on in Colossians. Evaluating our thoughts through this lens can help us maintain a mind set on God.

As 2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us, we must “demolish arguments

and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.” It is essential to take our thoughts captive and align them with Christ. Ephesians 4:26-27 warns us not to let anger linger, as unresolved emotions can open doors to spiritual unrest.

Desiring a Pure Heart The Bible frequently urges us to guard our hearts, the source of our desires. Proverbs 19:21 reveals that while we may have many plans, “it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Psalm 37:4 reassures us, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” When our hearts align with God, our desires reflect His will. Psalm 51:10 is a heartfelt plea: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” To know God’s will, we must seek a heart that is purified and aligned with His desires.

Conclusion: Embracing Your Purpose To discover our purpose, we must look to Christ, seeking to glorify God by fulfilling the assignments He has entrusted to us. This journey begins with having an alert mind to discern what is pure, right, and excellent, combined with a heart filled with God’s desires. As we commit to this pursuit, we become vessels of His glory, fulfilling our divine calling with joy and gratitude. Let us embrace the invitation to focus on eternal things, allowing our lives to reflect the love and light of Christ in a world that desperately needs His hope. Amen.

inter is my all-time favorite season to create warm makeup looks with rich tones! With 10 years of experience as a celebrity and bridal makeup artist, I have had the privilege of gracing the faces of Fantasia, Kelly Price, Tamar Braxton, MC Lyte, NeNe Leakes, and many more. My clients always opt for classic looks featuring colors like deep browns, burgundy, silver, and black. A smokey eye never disappoints, and I love pairing it with a nude lip to emphasize the eyes. To achieve a flawless winter-inspired makeup look, I always start with a well-prepared canvas. I prime the skin with a moisturizing primer, followed by a fullcoverage foundation that matches my client's skin tone. Next, I use a combination of cream and powder products to create a natural-looking contour, highlighting the high points of the face, such as the forehead, nose, and cheekbones. For the eyes, I like to use a blend of rich shades to create a warm, smokey effect. I apply a light taupe or beige eyeshadow all over the lid, followed by a darker shade of brown, black, or silver to add depth. A swipe of black eyeliner, combined with dark eyeshadow along the bottom lash line, adds drama, and the perfect false lashes make the eyes pop! Finally, I finish off the look with a nude lip color and gloss, as a dramatic eye pairs perfectly with it! A nude lip can instantly elevate the overall look, making it suitable for both day and night outings. By following these simple steps, anyone can create a stunning winterinspired makeup look that's sure to turn heads!

MAKEUP TIPS 01

Apply black lash glue to the lash (remember to let it dry for a couple of minutes first before applying) and swipe white lash glue across the upper lash line. When the two types of glue fuse together, the lash won't budge.

02

Never use a dry beauty blender sponge. Soak it under running water and squeeze out the excess; your foundation will apply like airbrush.

Use mascara before applying your lashes to blend them with the false lashes. Fall out from powders can land on the natural lash, which doesn't look good underneath. I also like to line the upper lid with a liquid liner to minimize any gaps.

FASHION

A

s the crisp air settles in and the days grow shorter, winter invites us to cozy up—but that doesn’t mean your fashion has to take a backseat. Instead, embrace the season by transforming your wardrobe into a vibrant canvas of bold textures and rich colors. Let your outfits reflect warmth and individuality, telling a story that resonates with confidence and creativity. Here are some tips to add flair to your winter wardrobe, ensuring you stay cozy while standing out in style:

BOLD OUTERWEAR Swap out neutral coats for something with more personality. Opt for a bright-colored or patterned coat— think rich jewel tones, plaid, or animal prints.

TEXTURED LAYERS Play with different textures like faux fur, velvet, shearling, or quilted fabrics. A faux fur vest or a velvet blazer adds depth and interest to your outfit.

STATEMENT BOOTS Go beyond basic leather boots by choosing unique designs. Metallic, studded, or embroidered boots can transform a simple winter outfit into something more dynamic.

VIBRANT KNITWEAR Instead of sticking to traditional black or gray sweaters, introduce vibrant colors like mustard, burgundy, emerald green, or even neon shades. Color-blocked or patterned sweaters add extra fun.

UNIQUE SCARVES AND HATS Add pops of color or quirky patterns to your winter accessories. A brightly colored beanie or a printed scarf can elevate even the simplest winter look.

LEATHER OR SUEDE GLOVES Invest in a pair of high-quality leather or suede gloves in a standout color like red or deep green. Not only will they keep you warm, but they’ll also serve as a stylish touch.

LAYERED JEWELRY Winter outfits can sometimes feel bulky, but you can still incorporate statement jewelry. Layer necklaces over a turtleneck or add oversized earrings that peek out from under your hat. Bold Prints: Incorporate plaid, houndstooth, or checkered patterns into your wardrobe— whether through skirts, pants, or blazers. These prints instantly add sophistication and spice to winter staples.

THE PRAYER of SALVATION Lord, I admit I am a sinner. I need and want Your forgiveness. I accept Your death as the penalty for my sin, and recognize that Your mercy and grace is a gift You offer to me because of Your great love, not based on anything I have done. Cleanse me and make me Your child. By faith I receive You into my heart as the Son of God and as Savior and Lord of my life. From now on, help me live for You, with You in control. In Your precious name, Amen "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).
