Her story His GLORY with DAPHNE WILLIAMS

12 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

H E R S TO RY, H IS GL ORY

D

aphne Williams is a proud mother of a beautiful twoyear-old daughter who brings immense joy and purpose to her life. Professionally, she is the owner of the award-winning childcare and early learning center, Smarty Pants, located in the vibrant community of Chicago’s Bronzeville. Her journey began as a schoolteacher and later as a principal, laying a solid foundation for her current role. She is deeply passionate about early childhood education and committed to nurturing young minds to achieve their fullest potential. Her faith has been the cornerstone of her success. Daphne firmly believes that her relationship with God has guided her through every challenge and triumph. It is through His grace that she has been able to transform her vision into reality, creating a safe, nurturing, and academically enriching environment for children. Every day, Daphne is inspired by the resilience and curiosity of the children she works with and by the unwavering support of the community she serves. Her goal is to continue making a positive impact, helping families and children thrive. She hopes to inspire others through her story, reminding them that with faith and dedication, anything is possible. One significant challenge that Daphne overcame solely through her faith was the journey of opening her daycare center. As a teacher, her salary was very small, and the dream of starting her own childcare center seemed almost unattainable. She spent months searching, looking at over 40 different buildings, each time feeling discouraged by

the obstacles and limitations. However, she held firmly to her faith, believing that God had a plan for her. In His perfect timing, He led her to her church's old administration office. It was a space filled with prayer and love, and it became the foundation for her dream. Remarkably, she was able to open her business with zero debt. This was not because she had money, but because of God's provision and guidance. He opened doors she never imagined and provided resources in ways she could not believe. Starting her daycare center in this particular building and neighborhood was no coincidence. Daphne knows God led her, and she is meant to be there, doing the Lord's work, serving the children and families of the community. Each day, she is reminded of His faithfulness. This experience taught her that with faith and determination, God can turn the seemingly impossible into reality. Her story is a testament to His glory and a reminder that when people walk in their purpose, guided by His hand, miracles happen. She hopes her journey inspires others to hold onto their dreams and trust that God will lead them to their own places. The moment Daphne realized she couldn’t do it on her own and gave her life to Jesus was during her senior year of college. Growing up, her childhood was pretty rough, but her grandparents and all the elders in her family had her back. They were her everything, always showing up for her. That’s why people say she has an old soul—she was raised by some amazing, wise folks. When she started college, all her family was there, alive and kicking, cheering her on. But

MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE | 13

14 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

by her senior year, everything changed. She lost six of them, including her grandma, right before her final semester. The grief was overwhelming, and the stress of trying to graduate felt like too much to handle. She was a whole mess! That’s when Daphne ran to God. She knew she couldn’t do it alone. The pain of losing her support system was too much, and she felt like she had no one to turn to. So, she quit playing and gave her life to Jesus. Turning to God was the best decision she ever made. His love and grace gave her the strength to push through and graduate. That moment changed everything for her. It showed her that even when life knocks you down, and you feel

like you can’t go on, God is there to lift you up. In her darkest hour, she found light and purpose in Jesus, and she’s been walking with Him ever since. When Daphne is feeling down or going through a rough time, she leans heavily on her faith and the support system around her. Prayer is her first refuge—it helps her find peace and clarity amid the storm. She also takes a moment to reflect on the many blessings in her life, including her wonderful daughter, her supportive family, and the incredible community she serves. Spending quality time with her daughter can turn any rough day around. Her laughter and innocent perspective on life remind Daphne of the simple joys and the bigger picture. She also finds solace in

connecting with her team and the children at her center. Their energy and enthusiasm are infectious and help lift her spirits. Daphne also believes in selfcare and taking time to recharge. Whether it's a quiet walk, reading an inspiring book, or simply enjoying a cup of tea, these small acts of self-love are essential. She also tries to surround herself with positive and encouraging people. Ultimately, Daphne reminds herself that rough times are temporary and that God’s plan is always at work, even when she can't see it. Trusting in His timing and wisdom gives her the strength to keep moving forward with hope and determination. To Daphne, "Her story, His glory" encapsulates the profound

MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE | 15

relationship between her life journey and God's divine plan. Her story is a testament to His glory because every milestone, every challenge overcome, and every success achieved is a reflection of His grace and guidance. Throughout her life, there have been moments when the path seemed uncertain or the obstacles insurmountable. During these times, her faith in God provided the strength and direction she needed to persevere. As she shares her story, Daphne wants to shine a light on the ways in which God's hand has been at work. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and His plan. By acknowledging His glory in her story, she hopes to inspire others to recognize that with faith, all things are possible, and that every challenge is an opportunity for God's glory to shine through. In essence, "Her story, His glory" is a reminder that her journey is not just about personal success but about fulfilling the purpose God has set for her. It is about using her experiences to uplift others, to spread love and hope, and to honor Him in all that she does. Daphne absolutely believes she is walking within her purpose. Every day, she is driven to provide the support and opportunities that many children might not otherwise have. She sees a reflection of her younger self in some of the children she cares for. Her past motivates her to ensure that every child feels valued, understood, and capable of achieving great things. Her journey has been deeply shaped by her challenging childhood, but it was also marked by the love and faith of her grandparents. They kept her anchored in

16 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

the church, and she often says that she is still living off their prayers, even though they are no longer with her. Their faith and support laid the foundation for the woman she is today. Daphne’s childhood profoundly influenced her commitment to serving children. She understands firsthand the impact of a nurturing environment. Her grandparents' dedication to her well-being and spiritual growth inspired her to create a safe, loving, and academically enriching space for the children at her center. Walking within her purpose means using her trials and triumphs to uplift and inspire the next generation. It is about honoring her grandparents' legacy and their prayers by making a lasting difference in the lives of those around her. Daphne wants to remind everyone that even in the most challenging times, they are stronger than they think and that every trial is an opportunity for growth. When the path seems impossible, trust that God has a plan for you that is greater than you can imagine. She encourages people to surround themselves with positivity and seek solace in the small moments of joy that each day brings. Lean on faith, for it is a powerful source of strength and resilience. Know that you are not alone— reach out to your community and your loved ones. Daphne also encourages taking one step at a time. Sometimes, the journey can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make all the difference. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and keep moving forward with

the confidence that better days are ahead. Lastly, believe in the power of prayer and the impact of your faith. Trust that God is with you in every moment. Your story is not over, and the challenges you face now are merely chapters in a beautiful, unfolding narrative of strength, perseverance, and triumph. Keep the faith, stay hopeful, and know that you are capable of incredible things. You are loved and valued, and your best days are on the way! Lately, Daphne has been stepping into the public speaking arena. She spoke at her eighth conference last month! Recently, she launched a childcare provider support network called The Chicago Childcare Connection. Training teachers is a passion of hers, and she believes if she can expose teachers to the great practices in early childhood education, she can change the lives of students all over the country, not just within the four walls of her center. She is a licensed trainer for the early childhood Illinois state registry and is planning more workshops for childcare staff.

Your inspiring journeys encourage new entrepreneurs to trust in the Lord’s plan and to walk their own paths with hope and determination. May your continued success be a blessing and a source of inspiration for others on their entrepreneurial journeys. DESTINY JACKSON A MINISTRY OF TRANSFORMATION

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is often our passions that anchor us and give us purpose. For Destiny Jackson, the art of hairstyling has always been that anchor, a calling recognized as early as age ten. Growing up, Destiny spent countless hours in her mother's salon, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, observing the meticulous craft, and learning the ropes from a seasoned professional. It was in that nurturing environment that her love for hairstyling blossomed, leading her to pursue a career in this transformative field. To Destiny, being a hairstylist is more than just a profession; it is a ministry of transformation. Witnessing the profound impact a hairstyle can have on a person’s self-perception is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. This is especially true for those battling hair loss, where the joy and confidence that emerge from seeing themselves in a new light are truly indescribable. Furthermore, the salon becomes a sanctuary where

life-changing conversations take place. It is a space where people inspire one another, share their stories, and build each other up, creating a priceless tapestry of human connection. Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, Destiny has received invaluable advice, but one piece stands out above the rest: always move with integrity in business. Building a sustainable business is not a sprint but a marathon that demands time and consistency. Integrity lays the foundation for lasting success and fosters trust with clients and colleagues. For those aspiring to enter the hairstyling industry, Destiny’s foremost advice is to ensure that your passion for the craft is genuine and unwavering. This profession comes with its fair share of ups and downs, but it is your love for the art that will fuel your perseverance and motivation. Passion is the cornerstone that will carry you through the challenges and triumphs. Destiny’s faith has profoundly shaped her approach to business. As a Christian, she understands that her business is ultimately God’s. This perspective requires her to surrender her plans daily and seek His guidance in all her endeavors. By entrusting her business to God, she finds peace and clarity, navigating each day with a sense of purpose and direction that transcends mere worldly success. MOISE BAPTISTE A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND RESILIENCE

Moise Baptiste's journey into entrepreneurship began out of necessity rather than choice. Over fourteen years ago, after earning his Ph.D., he found himself struggling to secure sustainable work in

academia. Confronted with this challenge, he decided to take a chance on himself by starting a local outdoor adventure business. Although this initial venture ultimately failed, it proved to be an incredible experience. Moise invested in himself, and despite the failure, he recognized the importance of moving forward. Each step along the way became a lesson in resilience and faith, leading him to understand that every setback could be a stepping stone to future success. One of the most rewarding aspects of Moise’s profession is his business partnership with God. He experiences a profound sense of joy and fulfillment through this divine collaboration, which has provided him with purpose and direction that he could not have found elsewhere. In moments of uncertainty, he has felt God's guidance, offering clarity and wisdom beyond his own understanding. This spiritual partnership transforms the daily grind of business into a missiondriven journey, filled with opportunities to witness God’s work in action. The best piece of advice Moise has received as an entrepreneur came from Curtis Jackson: "You can have faith or you can worry, but you can't do both." This simple yet profound truth has guided him through many challenging times, reminding him to trust in God's plan rather than succumbing to anxiety. It is a

20 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

constant reminder that faith and worry cannot coexist, and choosing faith opens the door to peace and confidence in God’s provision. This principle has become a cornerstone of Moise’s entrepreneurial philosophy, shaping how he approaches both challenges and opportunities. To anyone looking to start their own business, especially

“You can have faith or you can worry, but you can't do both.” in his industry, Moise offers this advice: if one is going to start a business after receiving a terminal illness, they better have a lot of faith. Faith is the cornerstone that supports one through the toughest times. It is essential to believe in something greater than oneself, to have a source of strength and hope that can sustain through seemingly insurmountable circumstances. Faith provides the perseverance needed to overcome adversity and the vision to see beyond immediate obstacles. Moise’s faith has profoundly influenced and shaped his approach to

business. Now two years cancer-free and counting, he views his survival as a second chance at life with a clear mission to fulfill. This experience has deepened his appreciation for each day and strengthened his commitment to living out his purpose. He sees his business not merely as a means to an end, but as a platform for making a meaningful impact. Through his journey, Moise has learned that stress and current lifestyles are not conducive to a long and healthy life. His goal is to share his knowledge and help others make necessary changes for a fulfilling life. This mission is approached with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility, driven by a desire to inspire and guide others on their own paths. Moise has witnessed firsthand how detrimental stress can be, and he is passionate about promoting a lifestyle that prioritizes health and well-being. In every step of his journey, Moise sees God’s hand at work, guiding him, strengthening him, and giving him the courage to continue. His business is not just a means of livelihood but a testament to God’s grace and a platform to share His love and wisdom with others. Moise strives to reflect God’s light in all his interactions and decisions, ensuring that his work honors Him and serves His greater purpose. Each day presents an opportunity to witness God’s miracles and be a vessel of His blessings to those around him.

MIR ACLES still happen with BELLA GRACE

B

ella Grace is a beacon of hope and resilience, embodying the transformative power of faith and determination. Through unimaginable trials, she has emerged not only as a survivor but as a guiding light for many. Her life's mission is to inspire, uplift, and serve, turning her pain into a purpose that reaches far beyond her personal story. Her journey, marked by profound adversity and miraculous recovery, stands as a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and the grace of God. Her testimony is a story of profound pain and remarkable transformation. Though graphic and challenging to share, it stands as a testament to resilience and faith. The depth of her experience cannot be fully captured in words,

22 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

but here is a glimpse into her journey. She endured significant physical trauma that left her with no sensation on her entire left side, spinal and nerve damage, and collapsed lungs requiring a chest tube. Her face and body bore the scars of this brutal attack. Years later, she faced a different kind of torment—emotional abuse in a marriage that, while not physically violent, was deeply damaging. She also suffered the heartbreak of a stillborn child and the isolation of a divorce, all without the support of family or friends. These trials brought her to her knees, surrendering completely to God. Yet, even in her surrender, more challenges arose. Her eldest son struggled with drug addiction, falsely accused her, leading to her arrest, and caused her mother's eviction.

Despite these hardships, she persevered, determined to build her life and mission. Miracles do happen, and her life is proof of this truth. At 22, her ex-boyfriend brutally attacked her, stabbing her 15 times in front of her children. What could have been the end marked the beginning of a miraculous journey that has shaped her purpose and passion. She met her ex-boyfriend at 19 during a college Spring Break. Despite early reservations, they quickly entered a relationship. Initially, he seemed loving, but soon became possessive and controlling. Even as his behavior grew increasingly alarming, she stayed, especially after conceiving her first child. By the time she gave birth, they had separated, only to reunite out of fear and necessity.

MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE | 23

The abuse escalated, becoming more severe and public. He terrorized her and their children, leading to a series of traumatic events, including a harrowing incident where he tried to crash the car they were in. His reign of terror culminated in a brutal attack where he stabbed her 15 times in front of their children, who were just 11 months and three years old. Determined to transform her pain into purpose, she founded Walking On Water Ministries International. This ministry serves as a beacon of hope, teaching that life exists beyond the darkest times. Through her ministry,

24 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

she provides meals, clothing, companionship, and shelter to those in need, visits the sick, reaches out to prisoners, and offers help to anyone she encounters, embodying God's love and grace. Her commitment to helping others extends to education. With over 30 years of experience, she founded Bella Grace Academy in 2007. Starting with nothing but faith and a desire to serve, she launched the school in her home. Today, Bella Grace Academy offers virtual services across the USA and other countries, providing quality education to children and support to their families. Her heart for service is especially evident in her work with women and children who have suffered from intimate partner and domestic violence. Through her women’s group, she empowers and encourages women to embrace their Godgiven potential. Her message is clear: no matter the depth of your pain, there is always hope and a way forward. Overcoming these monumental challenges has not been easy, but it has shaped her into a resilient and compassionate person. Each trial, each heartbreak, has refined her faith and commitment to serving others. This journey from unimaginable pain to a life of purpose and service is a testament to the power of faith and determination. Through Walking On Water Ministries International, she has been able to reach countless individuals who are struggling.

MIRACLES STILL HAPPEN

Whether it’s providing a meal, a place to stay, or simply offering a listening ear, she is dedicated to making a difference. The ministry’s impact is felt not just locally, but globally, as they extend their support to those in need, wherever they may be. Bella Grace Academy stands as a beacon of hope in the educational field. From its humble beginnings in her home to its current reach across countries, the academy symbolizes the fruition of a dream nurtured by faith and perseverance. They are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive educational environment for children and their families. Her work with women and children affected by domestic violence is particularly close to her heart. Having lived through such trauma, she understands the profound impact it can have. Through her women’s group, she strives to empower survivors, helping them reclaim their lives and recognize their inherent worth and potential. In addition to her ministry and educational work, she has also been an advocate for mental health awareness. Understanding the emotional toll of abuse and trauma, she works tirelessly to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. She offers support and resources to those struggling with depression, anxiety, and PTSD, ensuring

they do not have to face their battles alone. Her life is a powerful testimony that miracles still happen. From the ashes of her past, she has built a life of purpose, touching countless lives with compassion and faith. Her story is a shining example

Her ordination as a pastor marked a significant milestone, signifying a deeper commitment in her spiritual path. "My love for God is central to everything I do," she emphasizes. "Initially, I spoke about Him stoically. However, God has encouraged me to share more deeply, illustrating how I

handle victories and challenges with grace and favor. His presence is always with us, even in our toughest times." The establishment of The BOSS Network has been pivotal in Cameka's exploration and cultivation of her leadership potential. Despite initial hesitations, she embraced her role as a leader, realizing that pursuing excellence does not necessitate perfection. "God presented The BOSS Network to unveil my leadership capabilities," Cameka reflects, "demonstrating that I can lead with authenticity and transparency. Despite my efforts to strive for perfection– and falling short at times–He reminded me that it's not about being perfect but being purposeful was the goal. While I strive for excellence, only one person walked this earth perfectly, and it wasn't me." Cameka’s journey has not been without its challenges. The loss of her mother and other loved ones, along with personal struggles, has tested her faith.

Yet, she remains steadfast, finding strength in her calling to inspire and connect with others. Reflecting on a pivotal moment, she shared, "When my pastor approached me about becoming ordained, I accepted her invitation. I needed time to prepare mentally and spiritually, and four months later, in April, I was ordained. The support I received was overwhelming." In honor of her mother, Cameka founded Elizabeth’s Hope Ministry, a service-oriented organization dedicated to aiding the homeless, elderly, foster children, and shelters. This ministry reflects her mother’s compassion and commitment to serving the underprivileged. "My mother was a remarkable chef who dedicated herself to food ministry at our church. She had a deep compassion for the homeless, foster children, and all children—she simply loved people. Thus, our ministry will mirror her values—it will be service-driven." Cameka has been a life-

long member of her church, a spiritual haven that has nurtured her since childhood. Her pastor acknowledges and appreciates her dedication, often noting that Cameka could choose to be anywhere else but returns faithfully every Sunday. For Cameka, this comes as no surprise; her church is her spiritual sanctuary, where she connects deeply with the Holy Spirit. The loss of her mother was a pivotal turning point. It took Cameka and her sister three to four months to resume regular attendance at their church. Memories of their upbringing and the bond they shared with their mother made each visit emotionally charged. Their mother chose to reside near the church to remain close to her faith community, a testament to her devotion. Cameka recalls a recent drive to church that was particularly poignant. Memories of her childhood and her mother’s presence flooded her mind. While these moments can be overwhelming, they also evoke a sense of homecoming. Her church family, the people she grew up with, and the familiar surroundings provide comfort. In the years following her mother’s death, Cameka received significant recognition, including two doctoral degrees, a presidential “Lifetime Achievement” award from Joe Biden, and her ordination. She views these honors as blessings bestowed by her mother, now her guardian angel. A friend’s remark that her mother now orchestrates blessings on her behalf deeply resonates with Cameka. Despite missing her

mother dearly, these accolades serve as reminders of God’s faithfulness. Cameka’s sister recently earned a pre-doctoral degree, marking three generations of academic achievement. Their mother had always aspired to attain a doctorate but never had the opportunity. In a touching twist of fate, an organization posthumously awarded Cameka’s mother an honorary doctorate, fulfilling her lifelong dream even after her passing. Reflecting on her journey, Cameka acknowledges the profound influence of her mother’s faith and community on her resilience. Her mother’s wisdom,

humor, and profound love left an indelible mark. Despite encountering numerous challenges, including health issues, her mother remained a pillar of strength. Cameka has learned the significance of self-care and establishing boundaries, particularly as a caregiver and business owner. Her mother’s example taught her that true love does not entail sacrificing oneself; rather, it involves caring for oneself to better care for others. Cameka’s journey of healing and self-discovery has encompassed therapy and a commitment to prioritizing her well-being. Her mother’s passing also underscored the importance of

balancing love and responsibility. Cameka now comprehends the necessity of loving others without placing them above oneself or attempting to fulfill every need. This realization has facilitated more effective management of her business and the establishment of healthy boundaries. Cameka embarked on her entrepreneurial journey with a profound desire to support and connect Black women in business. Inspired by her background in education and event planning, she founded The BOSS Network. The vision was to create a space where Black women entrepreneurs could connect, sup-

port one another, and break through barriers. Despite initial obstacles, The BOSS Network swiftly gained recognition. Cameka’s determination and faith guided her through the nascent stages, and her network expanded beyond Chicago to become a national platform. The network’s success serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness and the potency of community. In the realm of entrepreneurship and community leadership, Cameka Smith’s journey epitomizes faith, perseverance, and the guiding influence of God. As the visionary behind The BOSS

Network, Cameka has not only fostered a thriving community of over 200,000 women but has also positively impacted numerous lives through business training, coaching, and investments. Her path to success, adorned with accolades from esteemed publications, chronicles a story of divine purpose and unwavering faith. "My leadership abilities are a gift from God," Cameka humbly acknowledges, reflecting on a childhood that prepared her for the role she believes she was called to fulfill—representing God’s kingdom through service to Black women entrepreneurs.

From launching the BOSS Impact Fund to combating the stark underinvestment in Black women-owned businesses, Cameka’s faith has been her guiding light. "God led me through uncharted territories," she shares, attributing her journey's milestones to mentors and divine intervention. The BOSS Network’s impact, including $1.5 million invested in female founders, underscores her dedication to God’s mission of empowerment and equity. Navigating challenges and detractors, Cameka remains resolute, focusing on the vision entrusted to her. Her approach is rooted in prayer and discernment, seeking God's guidance in every decision. 'When you pursue your dreams, you inspire others to do the same,' she asserts, underscoring the impor-

tance of authenticity and steadfastness in leadership. Even amid personal struggles and setbacks, Cameka draws strength from God's grace. "He sustained me," she reflects, highlighting faith's role in overcoming obstacles and remaining true to her purpose. Her commitment to integrity permeates every facet of her life, from business decisions to personal interactions, embodying the principle of letting her light shine. Looking ahead, Cameka invites others to join The BOSS Network's journey. Through membership, engagement, and support, individuals can contribute to a community founded on empowerment and mutual upliftment. As she commemorates the network’s 15th anniversary with upcoming events

in Atlanta and Chicago, Cameka continues to inspire through unwavering faith and dedication to God’s work. In essence, Cameka Smith’s narrative exemplifies the transformative power of faith, persistence, and obedience to God’s calling. Through her leadership and The BOSS Network, she epitomizes what it means to walk in faith while effecting profound change in the realm of business and beyond.

“I’m a big relationship person,” Jacob Latimore shared with MB Magazine when we caught up with him in Chicago on the MB Magazine set. “I’m single. I’m dating. I’m growing and I am locked in.” Sizzle! SIZZLE! Do we have your attention yet? Jacob Latimore, actor, singer and dancer from Milwaukee, WI, known best for his current role as Emmett in the hit series The Chi on Paramount+ and Showtime, is speaking, and we are listening. Adding to the heat of this year’s Summer/Fall issue of MB Magazine, Jacob is baring it all to give readers an inside look at the salt in his life that gives him the savor for God’s grace. It's not by coincidence that during his discussion with MB Magazine, Jacob hones in on the importance of relationships and how God is nudging him to move differently than he ever has before. From business relationships to relationships of intimacy, Jacob

bares it all in his journey toward strengthening his relationship with God. In hearing Jacob’s story, I am reminded that a relationship with God is the single most important relationship that a person will have during his or her lifetime. Unfortunately, it is the relationship that typically comes last in the lineup when we consciously consider all the relationships that are important to us. One sure sign of spiritual maturity is when a person begins to consciously consider their relationship with God as they consider engaging in a relationship with others. There are 5 ideals that Jacob’s journey teaches us: 1. We are the salt of the earth. 2. Salt can improve people, places and things. 3. Salt relies on its character for its identity. 4. Salt does not expire. 5. Salt loses its effectiveness when it mixes with too much of anything. Keep these things in mind as you read more on how God is moving in Jacob Latimore’s life to preserve the kind of indissoluble relationship that God desires to have with each of us. JACOB LATIMORE: “Around

the age of 11, before starting my career as a singer, my dad and my uncles formed a gospel quartet called LaMore. They grew the group and were later signed by Randy Jackson to MCA records. As a kid, I would see limousines pull up to the hood to pick them up to take them to LA. I recall seeing them [dad and uncles] on television doing their thing. That inspired me. I would watch them rehearse and sing songs. That ultimately led me to try and sing my own songs.

My grandmother started taking notice of me. Before long, my father, grandfather and mother began shaping what they saw in me. I started performing at schools and I even had an opportunity to perform at my own school. I started showing up to elementary school with my own T-shirt that had my face ironed on it. Then, I released my first song, Best Friend, in 2005, when I was around the age of nine. I remember that I would go to recess and promote my record. I am fortunate to have a family that really believed in me at a young age. Looking back on where I come from, it's been a grind. A good grind, though. I realize that I am still growing and still very much at the beginning of my career. So, I am grateful for the grind. It's all about believing in what you see and getting around people who are like-minded and see something in you.” At 13, Jacob signed his first record deal with Jive Records, and by 14, he released his debut single, "Like Em All.” As wisdom begins to take root, it is evident that Jacob began to embrace the saltine qualities embedded within him at an early age. In general, the nature of salt is to enhance or improve the quality of whatever you mix it with. Said another way, it improves the quality of life for someone other than yourself. Conceivably, when Jacob saw the impact that his father and uncles had on the lives of others through the production of music and song, he instinctively desired that same level of significance for his own life. This is where Jacob's journey of self-discovery truly began. MB MAGAZINE: Let’s talk about

your faith. JACOB

LATIMORE:

“To be

honest, growing my faith is becoming a morning routine for me. I need prayer. I need sermons. I need it every day. For where I am at in my life right now, growing in faith must be a daily thing. Even on my off days, I have a YouTube playlist of sermons

“I am still

growing.”

and motivational talks. Faith is becoming a part of conversations that I want to have right now. If it's about anything else, it doesn't really keep me going. I don't want to engage in gossip about nothing. I don't want to be caught up in talking about nobody. I just don’t want to sit in those types of conversations these days. So, yeah… I understand that as I'm growing, I need sustenance. I need that discernment to know what the next move is.” Looks like the salt is beginning to get its savor! Taking in Jacob’s every word, I can quickly see the correlation between his spiritual growth and his perceived need to protect himself from those things that could potentially disrupt his relationship with God. In effect, Jacob is cleansing his palate to include faith as a part of his conversation to maintain the effectiveness of his faith walk. The same way bad company corrupts good morals [1 Corinthians 15:33], salt purifies and preserves from corruption. He’s not finished yet. Let’s lean in and learn more about Jacob’s journey and how he intends to maintain his faith during his singleness, while

building meaningful relationships of intimacy. JACOB LATIMORE: “On a first

date, I'm flowers, dinner, first class flights, black SUVs. It may involve one of the back rooms at the restaurant. It may feel big because I must move a certain way, but the reality is, at this stage in my life, I am figuring out what it [dating] is for me. So, she might be like, “Oh, he loves me” and I’m like, ‘Nah, baby, I’m just trying to get to know you.’ With the access I have, it's easy and tempting to just mess around, but I am trying to be more disciplined. As a single man, you want to practice that good man role while you are in your singleness before you get into a real relationship. That way, you aren’t bringing unhealthy patterns into marriage as a husband. So, I've been trying to stay out of the club and turning down any club offers for the past year now. I don’t feel like the club scene is really a place for me to grow. I have had to block out the noise and figure out what is right for me.” MB MAGAZINE: What qualities

are you looking for in the lady who is right for you? JACOB LATIMORE: “I need a

woman that's ambitious, has a vision for what she wants to do with her life, and someone who is honest. I have learned that some women may not want to have a career. I’m cool with that. I'm cool with a woman saying, ‘I want to be a stay-at-home mom,’ but I have to be prepared for that type of lifestyle. If I know that's the goal, I can think about it, digest it and decide if I’m ready for that. I'm not a 50/50 guy. I'm more like ‘I got it all.’ I have always been that way. It's all about being ready as a man and having that discernment of what is going to work for you. I also need a praying woman.

44 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

That’s tough to find these days because it’s easy to cap about God right now. Like, you could post memes all day and feel like you are walking in the Spirit but… I'm trying to walk with God through my actions. I'm also human. I am very open about my mistakes, my temptations and the addictions that I'm trying to get over. So, yeah, I need a praying woman and a woman who can cook (laughing). I want to know how to cook too, because I would love to chef up something for her from time to time.” Jacob is talking GOOD! Ambition. Honesty. Praying… at the end of the day, he knows what’s right for him. Above all, take note that Jacob is seeking. While he is seeking, he is also practicing and inspecting the production of fruit. My advice to Jacob Latimore hopefuls is: don’t be like the fig tree referenced in Matthew 21:18-22. Like the numerous memes we see floating around on social media, the fig tree had the appearance of being rooted and fruit-producing. However, an up-close and personal look proved otherwise. He’s not asking for much. But for some, the ask that you have an authentic relationship with God will be too much to ask for. Thank God that Jacob is only looking for the one who understands and has also prepared herself well. JACOB LATIMORE: “One of my

favorite quotes is, “The parameters that God gives you are not restrictions, they are protections.” I used to always feel like, Why am I not at that party? Why am I not at those events? Why am I not around that circle of people? Later in life, I realized that God was always protecting me. I began to understand that everything I needed was in the parameters that God had already set. So, as I'm

becoming more aware of that, I can actually decide… You know what, I’m reaching. I need to stay right here. I am right where I need to be. You never know what God is protecting you from.” MB MAGAZINE: What’s next on

the journey with Jacob?

JACOB LATIMORE: “The Chi

does take up a lot of my time. We film approximately six or seven, maybe eight months out the year, depending on how many episodes we get per season. So, TV can be quite consuming. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out what my next few years will look like while at the same time trying to be more present in what I’m doing now. It has been a beautiful experience being in Chicago and being on The Chi for the last seven years now. I've been locking in a little more as my character, Emmet, has been progressing. My acting and my performance has been getting better and better every season. That’s because I have been eliminating all the other things I can do, like recording music and writing, to focus on the thing that I am actively doing. However, I do want to put out another big project. Until then, I just want to promote the music that I have out now. I want to do more shows… get in front of my fans a little more with some intimate shows in small venues. It's a new journey every day, and even though I have a plan set for the day, I always ask God to show me the way. Lead the steps. I would tell anyone who desires to be in this industry to find out what they are good at and to surround themselves with people that have their best interests at heart. I would also tell them not to rush stuff. I know that everything feels enticing - contracts and money, but take your time. Educate yourself. Some people want to get

YOU are valuable to GOD a devotional by CH A E COLE , PH . D.

O

ne of the most beautiful stories in the Bible is the story of creation. I love the creation story because it speaks to how valuable we are to God. Throughout creation, God spoke everything into existence in Genesis 1. He spoke the light, the grass, the waters, the animals, and yes, He did speak man into existence, too. However, He didn’t stop there when it came to us, because in Genesis 2:7, it says that He formed man from the dust and breathed into his nostrils. You know what that tells me? He took His time on you and me! God didn’t think it robbery to put His hand in the dirt and begin to shape, form, and mold man. God said, "I’m not going to stop at speaking you into existence; I’m going to form you with my hand." And because that wouldn’t do justice to how valuable you are to me, I will also breathe the breath of life into your nostrils! That’s how valuable we are to God. Psalm 139 tells us that we are beautifully and wonderfully made. It also goes on to describe that we are skillfully

crafted. Just think about some of the most valuable items in the world; many are handmade. For example, every Rolls Royce, one of the most luxurious car brands, handmakes every vehicle from the ground up. A significant portion of the value is in the process of creation. How much value do we carry being handmade by the Creator of the Universe in God? There is no price tag that we can put on ourselves. As sons and daughters of the living God, our value is literally out of this world. We are a chosen generation and a royal priesthood. Understanding our value to God is important because it shapes how we navigate life. When we truly understand how valuable we are to God, there is no lie from the enemy that can keep us from walking confidently in who He has created us to be. When you know how valuable you are to God, you will refuse to settle for mediocrity. When you know how valuable you are to God, you walk confidently in the gifts and talents that He has given you. Choose today to no longer settle for the scraps of life

and let your gifts lie dormant. Instead, know that you are a child of the Most High God and are valuable to Him! PRAYER:

God, thank you for taking the time to shape, form, mold, and breathe life into me. I pray that I never forget how valuable I am to you. Thank you for reminding me that I am beautifully and wonderfully made. I choose to live as a royal priesthood with each and every breath that I take. In Jesus' name, amen. REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

1. What gifts and talents did God create me with? 2. Knowing how valuable I am to God, how can I be more confident in how God created me? 3. How can I use my unique design, gifts, and talents to help bring God glory? SCRIPTURES:

the Grief of Growth:

SANCTIFICATION’S Hard TRUTH by TA RI COX , M . A .

Buried to resurrect. Faithless to faith-filled. Hopeless to hopeful. Death to life. Loss to abundance. These are just a few of the “before and after” statements that I can confidently argue have been heard by and catch no disciple of Christ by surprise. For the Christian especially, we observe that transitions are inevitably, constantly taking place around us, but we are more in tune with the transitions that occur within us. To find oneself all-in with Jesus is to submit oneself to growth that never ends until ultimate glory is attained with Him. Getting the fuzzies and intrigued by a constant state of growth is the response for many.

growth as society states I should be.

But the hard truth here remains that to experience the fullness of Christ, we must die.

Eagerness to develop into the “next” or “more” version of myself carries a shallow capacity.

To experience ongoing fellowship with Him, we must carry a willingness to continuously be transformed, leaving behind what once was.

In this current season, I don’t rave at the thought of becoming.

And here’s a confession I’ve recently found courage to admit: I am not nearly as enthused about

In this season, the thought of growth is a thing I admire, but right now it’s not a thing I enjoy.

56 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

I find that the prerequisites of hope and motivation are fleeting in light of growth.

Because the Lord is unwavering in His goodness, the old will never compare to the new. But the old doesn’t vanish when newness arrives on the scene. A death does take place here – a state of grief occurs here. Because for growth to occur, grief is never not involved. I’ve come to know that this odd cocktail of emotions with its oiland-water properties can be best

MIND described as the grief of growth. It’s receiving awareness that good is coming, but what once stood in place of the threshold of good that once was, is dying. It’s pressing your way in accepting that change comes with barriers that may present with both foreign and familiarity. A life given over to Christ, receptive of the complete, perfect reconciliation possible on by a longing for redemption that was to die for, must become accustomed to dying. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:24-25 ESV Dying to one’s preferences. Dying to the animalistic tendencies the flesh champions daily. Dying to the compulsions of our wants and desires. Dying to memories of false freedom before the pursuit of Christ collided with the fall scales off of our eyes. Dying to long sought after ideas and white-knuckled dreams that found space on the list of a good plan, but not His perfect one. Dying to relationships that appear to be failures but were ultimately used as vices to draw us closer to the Father’s heart, despite the hearts involved. Dying to “almost had its” and “almost did its.” When we sit back and ponder this self-denial, also known as dying to ourselves, it’s no wonder grief actually does appropriately exist. So what does one do with this? Where does this oxymoron that may provoke guilt for some, find space to belong as we journey in the joy set before us?

Where do we properly allot space for this grief that rears its head while we maintain the worth of Christ in mind? How do we forsake the tendency to reject that this even exists, because the heart and mind has become fully convinced that the value of knowing Christ and being positioned in relationship with Him truly is worth everything? We grieve the growth in Him, with Him. We accept not just His invitation to salvation, but His invitation to bare, intimate relationship with Him. withholding nothing – especially our emotions. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 ESV Jesus wasn’t just speaking to any catalog of emotions here, but those that were primarily birthed from the Pharisaic traditionalism and striving that was imposed on fellow Jewish leaders. I believe that these fellow Jews, in fact, understood the weariness that came from striving to become. I believe that the religious traditions, too, required a form of dying. Yet we find here, that with Christ, from death we also find life. And that life is found where we see that Jesus offers rest — Himself. The grief we find as we are continuously sanctified and transformed into the image of Christ is a grief that is sacred, too. Because there is a holy in recognizing that growth in Christ demands grief of what once was. And in this constant dying to self, we find personal relatability in Jesus Himself. “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them

as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” —Phillipians 3:8-11 ESV The grief we experience when growing in Christ must first be named and identified. To count the things we put to death as loss must assume that we recognize it has any value at all. It is to be viewed as no less worthy of a set of emotions that Christ desires to dwell with us in. It is to be void of shame-bred lies asserting that it is better to come empty handed that approach His throne of mercy with this need (Hebrews 4:16 ESV). It is to be shared with no less dignity than boasting of Christ being our everything. It is this grief that falls under the umbrella of human weakness, serving to keep us humble in desperate dependence on the Father. To accept the grief of growth is not to accept a pessimistic point of view in becoming, but a humanized view that allows room to further be buried into the arms of a perfectly understanding Lord, Savior and friend. So grieve what’s happening, even if it’s good happenings. Grieve what once was. Anywhere Christ is with us is worth longing for. But grieve with Him. Grieve with Him always. Even if that’s while He’s causing you to grow.

Transforming

INSIDE & OUT by QUIANNA EASON THE TRUE MEANING OF WELLNESS Let’s talk about overall wellness.I don’t know about you, but when I think about wellness, I think about green juice and a fitness class. Don’t shoot the messenger, but there’s so much more to wellness than having a juice and taking a class. Let’s go over the basics. THE FIRST STEP: MENTAL COMMITMENT You want to transform inside and out, becoming the healthiest version of yourself. Your first step is to mentally make up your mind that you want change. Deciding what will work for you comes with trial and error. For example, you may want to try a fitness class, go cold turkey with eating foods that will do more harm than good, and begin 4-5 self-care days a week. After day 2, you realize you, in fact, hate

58 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

BODY

fitness classes and going cold turkey is just not your thing. So, you start doing cardio at your local gym and trying new healthy recipes, with 2-3 self-care days a week (we’ll get into self-care days). After about a month, you’ve found yourself in a new routine with new healthy habits. By now, you’ve gone shopping for new workout clothes, made a few new gym friends, and begun sharing your self-care notes on social media. I love this new lifestyle for you! Let’s keep this going by digging a little deeper. FINDING YOUR “WHY” IN FITNESS I’ve always had a “why” when working out. It all began when I was going through a rough divorce. The gym was my outlet. It helped me release pain, tension, and sadness, all while gaining lean muscle, healing a broken heart, and growing a closer relationship with God. You may ask, “How’d you grow a closer relationship with God in the gym?!” Well, while the norm is to play trap music or what I’d like to call “bang bang shoot’em up” music, I played gospel music and/or sermons to uplift and feed my spirit. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 NLT. So you see, the enemy wanted me to fall apart, but God was actually putting me back together.

take care of it! You don’t have to become a fitness influencer, enter into bodybuilding competitions, or bikini contests, but you should want to pour physically and mentally into yourself. I found in fitness that a lot of women pour from empty cups, but when they grow to enjoy working out and take their journeys personally, there’s something that clicks mentally. Mentally, you begin to want better, set healthier boundaries, and love yourself even more.

some days I’ll have an hour and other days I may have 3 hours. During self-care days, I make sure I take time to reflect on my personal journey, things that need to be worked on, etc.; take myself on a date; read a couple of chapters of a book; be a couch potato while binge-watching a show on one of the networks; or just be still! You get the self-care idea—something just for you!

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE Quick story: One day during therapy, I was discussing how busy I was and how much I had on my plate. So much so that I was losing time for my personal workouts and time spent with God. My therapist stopped me right in my tracks and said, “How are you being a healthy influence if you’re not actually being a healthy influence?” Well, from that moment on, I’ve prioritized self-care days and personal time spent with God. Not every day will look the same;

FAITH AND FITNESS Now, fast forward 5 years: fitness and wellness are my lifestyle. I found what worked for me, and it’s my way of living. Wellness is taking care of your body. Your body is your temple. Your body is a gift from God. How dare we not

'You know that because of the wars waged against my father David from all sides, he could not build a temple for the Name of the Lord his God until the Lord put his enemies under his feet. 4 But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster. 5 I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God, as the Lord told my father David, when he said, ‘Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.’ (1 Kings 5) This scripture reveals a profound spiritual truth through its physical manifestation. Solomon could only build the Temple for the Name of the Lord because he was not preoccupied with defending Israel from enemies. This brings to mind Jesus' words to His disciples about fasting, contrasting their situation with the Pharisees: Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.' The disciples were eager to worship the Lord in a way they had seen others do, but Jesus taught them that true worship

is about understanding the right time and manner. This eagerness, if misdirected, can lead us away from authentic worship. For instance, I often find myself highly motivated to change my lifestyle, like going to the gym. I buy new workout clothes, plan a rigorous schedule, only to give up after a day or two. This physical cycle mirrors my spiritual life. There are times I’m eager to dive into extensive Bible study and prayer, yet other times I struggle to even open my Bible. This inconsistency often leads to a cycle of guilt and repentance, questioning my salvation. But God reminded me that we are always making space to be filled by something. If we do not make room for Him, how can we expect to live a life pleasing to Him? It is through His power, Spirit, and sacrifice that we are freed from sin. What we prioritize becomes our god. This is why the Israelites were instructed to tear down altars and statues to other gods. These idols, though powerless, take up space in our lives. Romans 12 calls us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—our true and proper worship. So, we must ask ourselves, what is preventing us from giving the Lord the time and space He deserves? In Deuteronomy 16:21, Moses instructs the Israelites not to set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar of the Lord. God does not want to share space with anything or anyone else. What is your Asherah? Is it your job that causes you to compromise your values? An addiction? A person leading you away from Christ? These things

take up space in our lives, just like clutter in our homes. There comes a point where we must get fed up and clear out the clutter. Some things in our lives become so familiar that we no longer notice them. But like Achan in the book of Joshua, holding onto these things can lead to destruction, not just for us but for those around us. Solomon, in a time of peace, built a temple for the Lord, a physical representation of our spiritual calling. Jesus has won the battle, released us from bondage, and made us temples of the Holy Spirit. You are a temple of the Holy Spirit. Solomon used the best materials and craftsmen to build the temple, understanding the significance of what he was creating. Likewise, we must recognize who we are building our lives for. When we truly understand the God we serve, our worship, our lives, will reflect His glory. Jesus said in John 4:24 that God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. This requires us to know the truth about God and ourselves. Our worship is not just the songs we sing at church but how we live our lives daily, responding to God’s presence. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and everything else will fall into place. When we focus on God, everything else pales in comparison. His love, His power, and His presence fill our lives, leaving no room for anything else. Let us dwell in His presence, offering our lives as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Him.'"

STEP 01: Moisturize Healthy

skin is the key to flawless makeup. Prep your skin for success by drinking plenty of water daily and committing to a sustainable skincare regimen. TO DO:

• Spray an aloe or rose-infused water generously all over the face. • Massage Embryolisse Crème Lait (1) into your face right after you spray. Really love on your under eyes, smile lines, and the top of the T-zone.

STEP 03: Build & Blend This is

where the magic happens! I recommend using an artist palette and blending sponges to complete this step. The palette and sponge will control how much foundation you’re applying. The sponge method seamlessly blends step 2 while building your desired coverage.

STEP 02: Preserve Your Curves

This step focuses on your facial features. Add blush, conceal, and contour all before you apply foundation. You’ll thank me later! Create a makeup map which lays the framework for your fresh-faced look. Have fun creating what may resemble tribal paint. Every dot, line, or swatch is meant to enhance the beautiful shape of your face!

lucent loose powder (2). You’ll glow differently with God, but be sure to bronze the perimeter of the face to create a subtle glow to your makeup look. TO DO:

• Apply your favorite bronzer with a dome or angled blush brush. • Use a fluffy brush to remove excess loose powder and buff it into your face.

TO DO:

• Apply concealer under eyes and between brows. This color should complement your lightest undertone, meant to brighten or lift areas of the face at least two shades lighter than your foundation. • Apply your favorite cream blush to cheeks and the tip of the nose. • Apply contour color under the cheekbone, along the hairline, and jawbone. This color should

complement your bronzer, meant to stop light or carve out areas of the face at least three shades deeper than your foundation.

TO DO:

• Deposit foundation and Embryolisse onto the palette. • Dip your blender into both. Tap the mixture together on the palette. Apply to the face by tapping lightly, always in an upward motion. • Repeat or add more product or moisturizer as needed to the palette. STEP 04: Buff & Bronze This

back and admire your enhanced beauty! This final step is based on your skill level or what you’re comfortable wearing. Are you a ‘brows or bust’ type? Maybe you wouldn’t be caught outside without mascara? The beauty of this step is that there’s no way to get it wrong! TO DO:

• Fill and brush brows. • Apply black or brown mascara. • Apply black or plum eyeliner under the eye and smudge. • Apply Bixa lip balm (3) and color. • Mist face with rose water. May you continue to exercise your gifts. —XO, Candace Michelle

effortlessyTRANSITION

YOUR STYLE from summer to fall WITH JOYCE SHEFFIELD

A

s summer fades and the crisp autumn air begins to settle in, it’s the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe. You don't have to completely stash away your favorite summer pieces. With a bit of creativity and strategic layering, you can blend your summer staples with fall essentials beautifully. Here’s how to master the art of seasonal style transition:

76 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

FASHION

1. LAYER SMARTLY LAYERING IS KEY Start with your

summer basics like tank tops and tees, then add lightweight layers such as cardigans, blazers, or denim jackets. For a chic fall look, try pairing a summer dress with a cozy knit sweater. The mix of light and heavy fabrics keeps you both comfortable and stylish as temperatures fluctuate.

2. EMBRACE RICHER TONES

Swap out your bright summer hues for richer, deeper tones that reflect autumn. Think burgundy, mustard, forest green, and navy. These colors can be easily incorporated into your existing wardrobe. For instance, pair a mustard blouse with your favorite white jeans or add a burgundy scarf to a summer dress.

3. INTEGRATE FALL FABRICS

Introduce fall-appropriate fabrics like wool, suede, and leather into your outfits. A leather jacket can instantly add an edge to a floral summer

dress, while a woolen skirt can pair beautifully with a lightweight summer blouse. Mixing textures adds depth to your outfit and keeps you warm as the weather cools. 4. UPDATE YOUR FOOTWEAR

Say goodbye to sandals and espadrilles, and welcome ankle boots and loafers. These shoes are perfect for fall and can be

worn with dresses, skirts, and jeans. Ankle boots, in particular, are versatile and add a stylish touch to any outfit. For a seamless transition, opt for neutral colors that can pair with various looks. 5. ACCESSORIZE WISELY

Accessories play a crucial role in transitioning your

wardrobe. Add a wide-brim hat or a fedora to give your summer outfits a fall vibe. Scarves are another excellent accessory for layering and adding warmth. Opt for plaid or knitted scarves to enhance your fall aesthetic. 6. PLAY WITH PATTERNS Fall

is the perfect time to experiment with patterns such as plaid, houndstooth, and animal prints. These patterns can be incorporated into your wardrobe through skirts, blouses, or even accessories like scarves and bags. Mixing patterns with your summer basics can create a fresh, updated look for the new season.

7. DON’T FORGET OUTERWEAR

As the temperature drops, outerwear becomes essential. Trench coats, wool coats, and puffer jackets are perfect for fall and can be layered over lighter summer pieces. Choose versatile coats in neutral colors to ensure they complement a variety of outfits.

8. MIX AND MATCH Don’t be afraid

to mix and match your summer and fall pieces. A summer maxi dress can be worn with a chunky cardigan and ankle boots, or a pair of denim shorts can be paired with a knit sweater and knee-high boots. The possibilities are endless when you blend the best of both seasons.

80 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

By thoughtfully layering, incorporating richer tones, and updating your accessories and footwear, you can create a versatile and stylish wardrobe that effortlessly transitions from summer to fall. Embrace the change in season as an opportunity to get creative with your style and enjoy the best of both worlds. Happy styling!

DIYdining chair

MAKEOVER BY TY HARPER!

IS YOUR DINING CHAIR FEELING A LITTLE OUTDATED OR OUT OF PLACE? Instead of tossing

it out, consider repurposing it into something fresh and functional. Repurposing not only breathes new life into old furniture but also aligns with sustainable living practices. Here’s a creative idea to inspire your next DIY project.

82 | MINDBLOWING MAGAZINE

DIY DESIGN & REFASHION

INSTEAD OF BUYING NEW CHAIRS, CONSIDER REUPHOLSTERING THEM. This DIY project

can transform your dining space without breaking the bank.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you reupholster your dining room chairs and breathe new life into your furniture. • Materials You’ll Need • Fabric of your choice • Staple gun and staples • Scissors • Screwdriver • Foam padding (if needed) • Batting (optional) • Pliers • Measuring tape STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE 1. REMOVE THE SEAT

Start by turning the chair upside down and using a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the seat in place. Keep the screws in a safe place for reassembly. 2. REMOVE THE OLD FABRIC

Carefully take off the old fabric. Use pliers to remove the staples. If the foam padding is still in

good shape, you can reuse it. Otherwise, replace it with new padding for added comfort. 3. PREPARE THE NEW FABRIC

Measure the seat and cut your new fabric, leaving a few extra inches on each side to wrap around the edges. If you’re adding batting for extra cushioning, cut it to the same size as the fabric. 4. ATTACH THE NEW FABRIC

Place the fabric face down, followed by the batting and foam padding (if using). Center the seat on top. Start by stapling the fabric to the underside of the seat, pulling it tight to avoid wrinkles. Begin with one staple in the center of each side, then work your way to the corners. Fold the corners neatly and secure them with staples. 5. REATTACH THE SEAT

Once the fabric is securely stapled, reattach the seat to the chair frame using the screws you set aside earlier. Ensure the seat is firmly in place and the screws are tight. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FABRIC When selecting fabric for reupholstering, consider both style and durability. Opt for heavy-duty fabrics that can withstand frequent use, such as cotton blends, canvas, or faux leather. Patterns and colors should complement your existing décor while adding a fresh touch to your dining room. BENEFITS OF REUPHOLSTERING

• COST-EFFECTIVE: It’s often

cheaper than buying new furniture. • CUSTOMIZATION: You can choose fabrics and colors that perfectly match your style. • SUSTAINABILITY: Reusing furniture reduces waste and is better for the environment • SENTIMENTAL VALUE: If your chairs have sentimental value, reupholstering preserves their history while updating their look. Reupholstering dining room chairs is a rewarding DIY project that can transform the look of your dining space. With some basic tools and materials, you can achieve a professional finish and give your old chairs a new lease on life. Whether you’re updating the fabric for a new season or simply refreshing a tired look, this project is a great way to personalize your home décor. Happy reupholstering! Enjoy!

Prayer of salvation Lord, I admit I am a sinner. I need and want Your forgiveness. I accept Your death as the penalty for my sin, and recognize that Your mercy and grace is a gift You offer to me because of Your great love, not based on anything I have done.
