獨一無二的爵士樂現場! 在歐洲、美國的城市,爵士酒吧散落在不經意的角落;你剛走過的轉角某處,PUB裡說不定就有知名的爵士樂手正在表演。工作了一天的人們,夜晚拋開生活的壓力,無 須正襟危坐,不用全神貫注,只要打開耳朵,就能與台上的爵士樂手互通聲息,用靈魂和音樂彼此對話……。爵士樂的即興精神讓聽覺隨時有驚喜:樂手們使出渾身解 數展現即興功力,聽眾大呼過癮,樂手也起勁忘形,每次的聆聽經驗都是獨一無二。這就是爵士樂現場蠱惑人心的魅力所在,無數死忠樂迷,即使家中已收藏上萬張爵 士經典專輯,仍可能不惜成本飛到地球另一端,就為親炙某個爵士大師的舞台丰采,體驗與爵士樂手心神交會的神奇時刻。 從2003年開始,「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」每年匯聚了名氣和音樂同樣具有份量的超級爵士大師,為樂迷帶來頂級國際水準的爵士樂現場;幾年下來,「兩廳院夏日爵士 派對」已經成為一年一度國內爵士樂迷最期待的盛事。雖然在爵士樂的版圖上,台北不像紐約、東京,有高密集度的爵士俱樂部,但經由兩廳院的努力規劃,樂迷們仍 可以在每年夏天享受最精緻的爵士樂表演。 在熱情洋溢的盛夏,今年邁入第八年的「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」繼續搖擺,來自爵士樂壇的頂尖樂手,巨星魅力閃耀讓人無法抗拒!為活動揭開序幕的是由來自古巴, 風靡美國的拉丁管樂大師帕奎多.德里維拉。德里維拉是同時囊括古典及拉丁爵士樂的葛萊美雙獎座的首位大師。他的音樂完美揉合古巴傳統樂及爵士經典元素,重新 詮釋拉丁美洲的傳統音樂。此次來台,他將為樂迷獻上兼具旋律與節奏美感,色彩絢爛豐富的拉丁爵士。同樣來自古巴,有音樂頑童之稱的天才鋼琴家邱裘.瓦爾德 斯,是六座葛萊美獎得主、國寶級鋼琴家貝波.瓦爾德斯的兒子。傳承自父親高超的琴藝天賦,瓦爾德斯從小便展露鋒芒,他的音樂融合古巴音樂、非洲節奏以及爵士 樂,敏捷有力的雙手敲擊在黑白鍵上的聲響,綿密且厚實、自由而狂放,深具爆發力,令人驚艷! 新生代薩克斯風好手約書亞.瑞德曼,於1991年的瑟隆尼斯孟克薩克斯風大賽,擊敗眾多強勁對手,勇奪首獎,從此崛起並迅速竄紅:2005年,他以葛萊美獎提名,奠 定爵士樂壇的新地位。瑞德曼多變的樂曲風格,及內斂沈穩的精湛演奏技巧,被洛杉磯時報評為:「新世紀爵士樂領袖中最具有生命力的爵士樂手。」壓軸演出則是樂 壇罕見的爵士女伶與鋼琴奇才艾蓮.艾莉亞。來自巴西的艾莉亞,由於兼擅鋼琴彈奏與演唱,而成為一位無可取代的最佳音樂詮釋者。在這場音樂會中,艾莉亞將用慵 懶富磁性的聲線、細膩咀嚼歌詞意境的吟唱技法,自在感與歌曲詮釋風格,讓樂迷聽見Bossa Nova的神韻精髓。 除了精挑細選的四場世界級的音樂饗宴外,首度於去年在藝文廣場舉辦的夏日爵士戶外派對,更是廣獲聽眾好評。今年延續這股熱潮,夏日爵士戶外派對集結黃瑞豐、 董舜文、魏廣晧、彭郁雯、呂聖斐、莊智淵等國內一流爵士好手,更邀請到知名歌手王若琳與史茵茵參與演出,國外嘉賓則特別邀請到紐約林肯中心非洲拉丁爵士樂團 的首席小號手 — 麥可.菲利浦.摩斯曼,與國內樂手同台競藝。 今年的「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」,同樣由長期支持我們的夥伴─台灣賓士Mercedes-Benz共襄盛舉,帶給國內愛好爵士樂的聽眾一流的節目。在獨一無二的爵士樂現場, 我們可以釋放自己「不安分的藝術靈魂」,隨性搖擺,也隨著爵士樂看見不同的人生風景。

Come and Swing with the Summer Live Jazz! The spontaneous spirit of jazz always surprises: musicians ecstatically improvise their music, so each listening experience is unique. This is how live jazz charms. Numerous jazz fans, even with thousands of jazz recordings in his/her collection, may fly across oceans just for the experience of a certain master's unique live performance and the magical moment of improvisation. Since 2003, the NTCH's Summer Jazz has invited various celebrated jazz masters, presenting jazz fans with premium and international live jazz performances. For these years, Summer Jazz has been the most anticipated annual event for Taiwanese jazz fans. Regarding the popularity of jazz, Taipei, unlike New York and Tokyo where jazz clubs flourish, can still present the fans with sophisticated jazz performances because of the NTCH's programming. In the passionate summer, the 8th Summer Jazz keeps on swinging, and the top jazz musicians spark with their charismatic stardom. Coming from Cuba, the Latino jazz band master Paquito D'Rivera inaugurates Summer Jazz. He is the first musician who has won in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories of the Grammy Awards. He blends perfectly traditional Cuban music with jazz elements, reinterpreting the musical tradition of Latin America. This time, he will present the fans with melodious and rhythmic Latin jazz in all its colorful splendor. Also from Cuba, the genius pianist Chucho ValdĂŠs is the winner of six Grammy awards and the son of the national treasure pianist Bebo ValdĂŠs. Deriving from his father, talented ValdĂŠs combines Cuban music with African rhythm and jazz elements, and his music is delicate and dense, free and wild, explosive and astounding. The saxophone master of the new generation, Joshua Redman, since his victory in the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, has risen up and become quite the celebrated artist. In 2005, nominated by Grammy Awards, he established himself securely in the jazz circle. His versatile style and refined, calm performance skills earned him praise by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the most vital figures in jazz of the new century." The finale of Summer Jazz is brought by Eliane Elias, the Brazilian jazz diva and pianist. Due to her proficiency in both singing and piano skill, she is an irreplaceable music interpreter. In the coming concerts, Elias, with her drawling, magnetic voice and singing skill that brings out the essence of lyrics, interprets songs spontaneously and conformably and presents the fans with the spirit of Bossa Nova. Aside from the annual four international concerts, Summer Jazz Outdoor Party, first held at the Main Plaza in 2009, has also been widely praised. This year, the Outdoor Party invites many Taiwanese first rate jazz musicians such as Rich Huang, Shun-Wen Tung, Stacey Wei, Yu-Wen Peng, Fred Lui, and Eric Chuang, and celebrated singers such as Joanna Wang and Ying-Ying Shih. The Outdoor Party also invites Michael Philip Mossman, the lead trumpeter at Lincoln Center's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Thanks to Mercedes-Benz, the long time supporter of Summer Jazz. Due to their generosity we are able to presents Taiwanese jazz fans with premium shows and environment to release their "unrestrained artistic soul" and swing with the music in live jazz performances.

A Grammy was awarded the United Nation Orchestra in 1991, the same year D'Rivera received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music. Additionally, D'Rivera's highly acclaimed ensembles- the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the

Paquito D'Rivera defies categorization. The winner of nine Grammy awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. Born in Havana, Cuba, he performed at age 10 with the National Theater Orchestra, studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music and, at 17, became a featured soloist with the Cuban National Symphony. As a founding member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, he directed that group for two years, while at the same time playing both the clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. He eventually went on to premier several works by notable Cuban composers with the same orchestra. Additionally, he was a founding member and codirector of the innovative musical ensemble Irakere. With its explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music never before heard, Irakere toured extensively throughout America and Europe, won several Grammy nominations (1979, 1980) and a Grammy award (1979).

Paquito D'Rivera Big Band, and the Paquito D'Rivera Quintet are in great demand world wide. While Paquito D'Rivera's discography reflects a dedication and enthusiasm for Jazz, Bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are impressive. They include solo performances with the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He has also performed with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, the Costa Rica National Symphony, the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, and the St. Luke's Chamber Orchestra, among others. In 2005, he began touring with guitar duo Sergio and Odair Assad, in "Dances from the New World." In his passion to bring Latin repertoire to greater prominence, Mr. D'Rivera has successfully created, championed and promoted all types of classical compositions, including his three chamber compositions recorded live

In addition to his extraordinary performing career as an instrumentalist, Mr. D'Rivera has rapidly gained a reputation as an accomplished composer. The prestigious music house, Boosey and Hawkes, is the exclusive publisher of Mr. D'Rivera's compositions. Recent recognition of his compositional skills came with the award of a 2007 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition, and the 2007 - 2008 appointment as Composer-In-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts with the Orchestra of St. Luke's. As part of the Caramoor Latin American music initiative, Sonidos Latinos, D'Rivera's new concerto for double bass and clarinet/saxophone, Conversations with Cachao, pays tribute to Cuba's legendary bass player, Israel "Cachao" Lopez. D'Rivera's works often reveal his widespread and eclectic musical interests, which range from Afro-Cuban rhythms and melodies, including influences encountered in his many travels, and back to his classical origins. Inspiration for another recent composition Three Poems from the New World came from the writing of Fortunato Villarrondo, JosĂŠ MartĂ­, and Dana Gioia. The three poems explore themes of societal struggles regarding racial intolerance, hate, injustice, and the appreciation of friendship, love, and life. The work was commissioned and premiered by the Chicago Chamber Musicians at the Grant Park Music Festival in June,

2006. His numerous commissions include compositions for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, the National Symphony Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Ying String Quartet, the International Double Reed Society, Syracuse University, and Montreal's Gerald Danovich Saxophone Quartet.

Regarding his 2002 commission for the National Symphony Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic, critics had this to say about the flute concerto performed by Marina Piccinini with the National Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony: "…Best that night was Paquito D’Rivera’s, ‘Gran Danzón’ (The Bel Air Concerto) in its world premiere. A spiky and imaginatively colored piece of Latin American orchestral writing…" (Joe Banno, Washington Post, February 11, 2002) "…'Gran Danzón' …this dazzling work…reveals D’Rivera’s sophistication as a composer..." (L. Peat O'Neal, Washington Post, June 3, 2002) Paquito D'Rivera is the author of two books: My Sax Life, published by Northwestern University Press, and a novel, Oh, La Habana, published by MTeditores, Barcelona. He is the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award 2005 and the National Medal of the Arts 2005. His numerous other honors include a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Music from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Jazz Journalist Association's Clarinetist of the Year in both 2004 and 2006. He is also the first artist to win Latin Grammys in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories-- for Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat and Brazilian Dreams with New York Voices. He has served as artistic director of jazz programming at the New Jersey Chamber Music Society and continues as Artistic Director of the famous world-class Festival Internacional de Jazz de Punta Del Este in Uruguay and the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival in Washington D.C.

2008 awards include the International Association for Jazz Education President's Award, the Frankfurter Musikpreis, and a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Music from the University of Pennsylvania. A tour in Japan in September 2008 includes Mr. D'Rivera conducting and performing Mozart concerti; the Concerto in A Major for Clarinet and Orchestra, and the Concerto in E flat Major for Piano and Orchestra. In 1999, and in celebration of its 500 year history, the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares presented Paquito with a special award recognizing his contribution to the arts, his humane qualities, and his defense of rights and liberties of artists around the world. The National Endowment for the Arts website affirms "he has become the consummate multinational ambassador, creating and promoting a cross-culture of music that moves effortlessly among jazz, Latin, and Mozart."

Chucho Valdés Winner of 6 Grammy awards and creditor of many doctorates, Dionisio Jesús "Chucho" Valdés Rodríguez natural from Quivican, Province Havana, Cuba. He was born in 1941, The Pianist, composer, professor of music, musical arranger and director of group, began his musical training in his former years, at home, under his father influence "The great Bebo Valdés" and his mother Pilar Rodríguez, teacher of piano and singer. At the age of 3 he already played at the piano the melodies he listened at the radio by ear with both hands at any tone. The positive musical environment of his family allowed him to enter into the knowledge fluently in several styles and genres of music.

Studies made At the age of 5 he received piano lessons, theory and sol-fa with the professor Oscar Muñoz Boufartique, studies that were finished at the Municipal Music Conservatory of Havana at the age of 14. He improved his knowledge with private lessons with Zenaida Romeu, Rosario Franco, Federico Smith and in composition with Leo Brouwer.

Professional activity At the age of 15 he formed his first Jazz Trio with Emilio del Monte and Luis Rodríguez. In December of 1958 he worked as pianist in the Deauville and St. John Hotels in Havana. In 1959, made his debut with "SABOR DE CUBA" Orchestra directed by his father where he accompanied many important singers of that time like Rolando Laserie, Fernando Alvarez and Pio Leyva. Between 1961 and 1963 he worked as pianist at the Martí Theatre, International Salon of Havana Riviera Hotel and at the Musical Theatre of Havana Orchestra's. In this last year, by Leo Brouwer recommendation, 24


he simultaneously created his Combo that in 1965 added a singer called Amado Borcela, better known as "Guapachá" work that opened a new way in the Cuban Popular Music: it was like IRAKERE´s preamble where many of its founders accompany him. In 1967 he incursed in the Cuban Modern Music Orchestra under the direction of Armando Romeu and Rafael Somavilla, so matured in Chucho his knowledge consolidated as group leader. Inside it appeared the Combo idea with a quintet format, and in 1970 he made his debut with it at the Jamboree International Jazz Festival in Poland, converting in the first Cuban group that participated in a Festival abroad of that genre where is congratulated by Dave Brubeck and it located Chucho for the first time, among the better 5 world piano players together with Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. In 1972 after recording the LP Jazz Bata with Carlos del Puerto and Oscar Valdés, Chucho decided to enlarge the format adding brass session and drums. Then he founded in 1973 , "IRAKERE" considered the most important group in the Cuban Musical history in the second half of XX century, an explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classicism and traditional Cuban Music, a sound that had never been heard before that revolutionized the Latin music. With IRAKERE, he developed a created work that joined the musical Cuban roots with the most contemporary expressive ways, with masterpieces of great transcendence as Misa Negra and Shaka Zulu both for Symphonic Orchestra and IRAKERE. In 1998 he began to work with a quintet format and the vocalist Mayra Caridad Valdés with emphasis of the piano as soloist and leader voice of itself up today. Since 2006 he is declared FAO's Ambassador of Good Will to the ONU in a ceremony hold at the Vatican, Rome. Since then he gives concerts in Havana each October, 16th World Food Day. New musical experimentations made him conceived in 2008 the "Chucho Valdés Band" conformed by a brass session with different instrumentalists of New Cuban generations added to the quartet and to Mayra Caridad Valdés' voice. During many years, Chucho Valdés has chaired the Organization Committee of the International Jazz Plaza in Cuba. Lazaro Rivero Alarcón started his professional career as a musician-actor, and since 1979 he formed jazz groups the septet called "La Vieja Guardia" that interpreted music of several genres. In 1987 he started in music composition and arrangement. In 1996 he moved into Habana and joined to the group "Otra Vision" directed by the flautist and composer Orlando Valle Maraca. The group was invited to the jazz festivals in France, Belgium, Netherland, Switzerland, England, Austria, Germany, Spain, USA, Greece and Martinique. In 2000 he joined the recognized Chucho Valdés Jazz Quartet, toured for more than 20 countries and started to record for Blue Note Records. He performed with international famous figures like Bebo Valdés, Concha Buika and Michel Legrand. With the quartet he has recorded Color de la Vida with Charles Aznavour, Obatala with Mayra Caridad Valdés, and El Ultimo Trago with Concha Buika.

He graduated with major in percussion with the best quotations in the National School of Music in Cuba in 1982. In the same year, he started his professional career in the Santa Clara's Modern Music Orchestra in Villa Clara, his home town together with the teacher Armando Romeu. Since then he entered several and prestigious Cuban groups like Varadero International Orchestra, an all-stars orchestra with Tata Guines, Frank Emilio, Richard Egúes and Omara Portuondo among others, which made tour in Japan. From 1995 to 2006 he was in the group "Otra Vision" founded by the flautist and composer Orlando Valle Maraca and he participated in many important discography projects, including Tremenda Rumba which was nominated in 2003 Latin Grammy award. During this time, he participated in the recognized world jazz festivals like Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, JVC Jazz Festival, Marciac Jazz Festival, Villette Jazz Festival in Paris, Cannes Festival (sharing the scenery with the great Tito Puente), Andorra Jazz Festival in Belgium, Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles, Aspen Colorado Jazz Festival, Calgary Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada, Jamboree Jazz Festival in Poland, St. Lucia Jazz Festival in Germany, Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, Budapest Jazz Festival, Lithuania Jazz Festival , Slovenian Jazz Festival, Estonia Jazz Festival, Cervantino Jazz Festival in Mexico etc. He also toured with Wynton Marsalis and his orchestra in USA, Canada, Europe, Columbia and Costa Rica. Yaroldy Abreu Robles showed his great talent by winning various prizes both in school and in provincial music competitions, including the first prize in the

7th National Percussion Competition in Cuban, and the prize for interpretation awarded by the Cuban Institute of Music. Before receiving his bachelor music degree with major in percussion in 2001, he was invited by Chucho Valdés to join the prestigious Irakere group in 2000 and the Chucho Valdés Jazz Quartet in 2001. Since then he has worked with many famed musicians and groups including David Sanchez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Wynton Marsalis, Chico Freeman, Dave Valentin, Sonny Rollings, Michel Camilo, Arturo Sandoval, Tania Maria, and Changuito etc. In 2003 he was nominated the Grammy award in the category of Best Traditional Tropical Album for CD Bajando Gervasio by Amadito Valdés, and in 2004 he got the Latin Grammy award in Latin jazz category with his participation in the CD by Chucho Valdés Jazz Quartet. He contributes with his talent to the development of the Cuban musical culture, and he has taught workshop and master class in Habana, Philadelphia, 32

Hutchinson's own analysis of the styles of personal idols was enhanced by private studies at the Manhatten School of Music under Justin Diccicio, as well as lessons with Marvin 'Smitty' Smith and Kenny Washington. "Hutch's playing proves he's one of very few young drummers who's learning the insides of the drums and the music," remarked Washington. "Unlike many drummers of his generation," Washington adds, "he listens, and is more interested in being a team player that just banging the drums." While still in school, Hutchinson toured the U.S. and abroad with Rodney before pianist Stephen Scott recommended him to one of jazzdom's legendary ensemble leaders - Betty Carter. The young drummer rose to prominence during his two-year stint with Carter and, according to him, "cultivated a strong sense of coloring, dynamics and control. I could literally take a dinner break in between some of those beats Betty laid down," he quips... After his work in the Betty Carter Trio, Hutchinson began a successful association with the Roy Hargrove Quintet, which continues to this day. The drummer has sparked Hargrove's band on two records and numerous concert performances. During his time with the firebrand young trumpeter, Hutchinson continues to perform and record with more experienced artists, most notably tenor great Joe Henderson. His appearance on Henderson's celebrated Lush Life prompted Gary Giddins to call his drum work "elegant and dancing." In 1995 Hutchinson joined the Ray Brown Trio taking the seat of Jeff Hamilton.

Marc Johnson was born in Nebraska in 1953, and grew up in Texas. At 19 he was working professionally with the Fort Worth Symphony, and while at the University of North Texas he played in the famed One O'Clock Lab Band while also was the principal bassist in the NTSU Symphony. In 1978, Marc joined legendary pianist Bill Evans' in what would be Evans' last trio.

Rafael has perfromed with famous musicians such as Dario Galante, Idriss Boudrioua, Osmar Milito, Durval Ferreira, João Donato, Mario Adnet, Moacir Santos, Hélio Celso, JT Meirelles, Spok Frevo, Hamilton de Hollanda, Maurício Einhorn, Jaques Morelenbaum, Lula Galvão, Marcos Valle, Marcos Amorim, Daniel Garcia, Claudio Roditi, Guilherme Dias Gomes, Turi Collura, Raul de Souza, Mika Mori, Oscar Castro Neves and Eliane Elias. Rafael has also performed with great singers like Zezé Motta, Emilio Santiago, Zé Renato, Roberta Sá, Paula Santoro, Maúcha Adnet, Ney Matogrosso, the Singer/ drummer Wilson das Neves, Leny Andrade and Alma Thomas. In Rio's jazz headquarter, Mistura Fina, he played many years with the piano legend Osmar Milito. In this venue, he had the opportunity to play with several artists like Russell Ferrante, Mike Shapiro, John Pizzarelli, Jane Monheit, Karrin Allison, Kevin Lethau and many others. He played in many Brazilian jazz festivals with Hermeto Pascoal, Jovino Santos Neto, Phillipe Baden Powell and "JT Meirelles e os Copa 5," Jean Pierre Zanella (Montreal), Ray Moore (New Orleans), Idriss Boudrioua (France), Dario Galante (Italy), Jeff Gardner (USA), Nosso Trio (Nelson Faria, Ney Conceição and Kiko Freitas), Paulo Moura among others. Rafael is currently playing with the greatest Bossa Nova singer and composer, Edu Lobo, and the pop singer Angela Ro Ro. In Brazil's jazz scene, he plays with Idriss Boudrioua Base & Brass septet. Since 2006, Rafael is a teacher of CIVEBRA (Brasília International Summer Music Course). He has played in many Jazz festivals in South and North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, in shows with Jeff Gardner Trio, Root System L.A. Group, the NY singer Elin, Nosso Trio, Mika Mori, and Cello Samba Trio (Jaques Morelenbaum, Lula Galvão and Rafael). Lately he has been touring around the world with Eliane Elias Quartet (Eliane Elias, Marc Johnson, Rafael and Rubens De La Corte). In New York for some time, he is working in recordings with Paul Nowinski, Jon Davis and John Hart.
