「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」10 周年慶 眾星雲集 魅力登場 2003 年兩廳院首度推出「夏日爵士派對」,開始煽起眾家樂迷對爵士的熱情。今年,邁入十周年的「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」,繼續在熱情洋溢的夏天魅力登場! 「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」除了廳內四場精選節目演出外,8 月 24 日、25 日將先在藝文廣場推出兩場精采戶外演出,為本系列節目揭開序幕。很謝謝台灣賓士, 第六年提供這個系列獨家贊助,今年且擴大參與,支持戶外演出,使樂迷們都能免費參與,在夏日的爵士音符中為自己「不安分的藝術靈魂」注入清涼。

「2012 兩廳院夏日爵士派對」廳內四場節目可謂眾星雲集:首場 8 月 26 日是被《紐約時報》讚譽為「史上最偉大爵士樂手之一」的次中音薩克斯風大師喬 ‧ 洛瓦諾(Joe Lovano)親自領軍的「喬 ‧ 洛瓦諾 Us Five 爵士五重奏」。洛瓦諾在 2004 年首度抵台即造成轟動,今年再次來台,必將再掀起騷動! 9 月 1 日由年高七十六歲,曾為爵士巨匠約翰 ‧ 柯川(John Coltrane)鼓手的亞伯特 ‧“圖堤”‧ 希斯 (Albert“Tootie”Heath) 搭配享譽國際知名拉丁爵 士小號大師麥可 ‧ 摩斯曼(Michael Mossman),以及葛萊美提名薩克斯風手安東尼歐 ‧ 哈特(Antonio Hart),與國內黃瑞豐、董舜文、魏廣晧等一流 樂手以千變萬化的演出形式同台飆樂,讓您一次盡享最純粹的爵士風情!

9 月 5 日場,全球最佳爵士大樂團「明格斯爵士大樂團」的十四位爵士高手首度來台,為台灣樂迷忠實呈現二十世紀爵士標竿查爾斯 ‧ 明格斯(Charles Mingus)樂風。這個為了紀念明格斯,由其遺孀成立的明格斯爵士大樂團,成軍超過二十年,獲獎不計其數。樂團延續一代大師音樂精神,完美融合豐富和 聲與歡樂藍調,即使是第一次聽爵士樂的觀眾,也會不自覺地愛上他們的演出。

9 月 8 日的最後壓軸將由縱橫流行、藍調與靈魂樂壇五十年的葛萊美爵士天后佩蒂 ‧ 奧斯汀(Patti Austin)以精湛口技與抒情唱腔,演繹爵士第一夫人艾拉 ‧ 費茲潔蘿(Ella Fitzgerald)演唱過的復古爵士經典。這位四歲即登上紐約阿波羅劇院舞台,五歲灌錄唱片,發行專輯二十多張的樂壇長青樹,閒適的唱腔, 魅力讓人無法阻擋!佩蒂 ‧ 奧斯汀近年專注於詮釋傳奇爵士大師們的作品,使她的演出有著濃烈的懷舊風情。首次抵台,深刻不矯情的抒情唱腔,將把您帶 入讓人低迴不已的復古爵士中!

十周年慶的「兩廳院夏日爵士派對」為樂迷準備的戶外大禮是 8 月 24 日的日本 Fusion 天團「T-Square 方格子樂團」,方格子首度於 2009 年來台曾造成轟動, 今年是二度與台灣樂迷見面。8 月 25 日國內知名「Soy La Ley 古巴爵士樂團」、「世界軌跡樂團」、「絲竹空爵士樂團」亦將熱鬧登場,同台競藝。

Tenth Summer Jazz at the NTCH Assemblage of artists and magnetism In 2003, the NTCH launched Summer Jazz, igniting the passing for jazz lovers in Taiwan. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the series, which continues to out-passion the sizzling summer. Beside the four indoor programs, two outdoor performances will open the series on August 24th and 25th. Much appreciation is dedicated to MercedesBenz Taiwan, the exclusive sponsor of the series for six straight years. This year, the company expands its support to outdoor performances, providing free admission to music fans. The four indoor concerts are a gathering of jazz masters. On August 26th, saxophonist Joe Lovano will lead in Joe Lovano Us Five. With his first visit to Taiwan in 2004 causing a stir, his upcoming visit will surely rock the town! On September 1st, NTCH Summer Jazz Project will feature drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, jazz trumpeter Michael Mossman, and jazz alto saxophonist Antonio Hart with Taiwan’s leading artists Rich Huang, TUNG Shun-wen and Stacey Wei. On September 5th, 14 members of the Mingus Big Band will present 20th century jazz standard bearer, Charles Mingus, in a true and faithful way. The Mingus Big Band, founded by his widow for the remembrance of the artist, has been established for more than 20 years and received countless awards. The band fuses rich harmony and festive blues, making even first-time jazz listeners fall in love with them uncontrollably. On September 8th, Patti Austin, a pop, blues and jazz music singer and a Grammy award winner, will interpret the “First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz classic with her magnificent skills and lyrical style. This longtime artist, who made her debut at the Apollo Theater at age four, had a recording contract at age five, and has released more than 20 albums, has an unstoppable charm with her laid-back voice. She has recently concentrated on interpreting works of jazz legends, making her performance exude a strong retro flavor. Her first visit to Taiwan will take the audience to a lingering retro jazz atmosphere with her profound and revealing voice. On the outdoor side, the tenth Summer Jazz will present T-Square from Japan on August 24th. The band made a sensation during its first visit to Taiwan in 2009 and they will return to meet their fans again this year. On August 25th, Soy La Ley, Orbit Folks and Sizhukong from Taiwan will also amaze the audience with their talents. The jazz party will surely feast your ears to your heart’s content!

「兩廳院夏日爵士戶外派對」第二日集結了國內三團同台競藝。跨越古今、東西、標準、拉丁,在靜謐的夏日夜晚挑起跨界的靈魂騷動。 絲竹空爵士樂團聚集了一群極具開創性格的爵士樂和國樂界音樂家,使古典的韻味與爵士的即興碰撞出超乎想像的獨特聲響,開創了原生自台灣的音樂新風格。成軍七年以 來發行了【絲竹空】、【紙鳶】、【旋轉】等專輯;曾榮獲金曲獎流行演奏類最佳專輯和最佳製作人獎,以及金音獎最佳樂手和最佳現場演出獎。絲竹空將古樸規矩的段落 融入了跨界元素與律動,既典雅又隨興,讓人忍不住自由搖擺。 世界軌跡樂團(Orbit Folks)取名的本意,是希望運用軌道(Orbit)的追尋,將失落各地的民族傳統音樂(Folks)一一尋回。成立於 2009 年,2010 年發表首張專輯【失 落的環節】(The Missing Link),2011 年榮獲金曲獎傳統暨藝術音樂類最佳專輯製作人及最佳跨界音樂專輯獎。音樂總監吳馬丁不斷開創台灣音樂的新紀元,兩年多來, 世界軌跡參與無數的音樂演出以及一系列「傳統與爵士的橋樑」大學巡迴演出,締造了盛大的迴響。 Soy La Ley 是台灣少數承襲古巴音樂傳統的樂團。“Soy La Ley”源自 Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez 的專輯,意思是“I am the law”,這種捨我其誰的宣示,代表著職業樂手 們在音樂路上的執著與熱情。團長徐崇育畢業於紐約大學爵士演奏碩士,承襲了 Machito、Tito Rodríguez、Tito Puente 的傳統;吸取紐約西班牙哈林區渾然天成的拉丁爵 士文化,八年的紐約洗禮後,他於 2010 年返台成立樂團,秉持著融合爵士與古巴音樂的初衷,在拉丁節奏中,讓聽眾感受到爵士樂即興的不可預期與驚奇。

Sizhukong, Orbit Folks and Soy La Ley On the second day of the Summer Jazz Outdoor Party, the NTCH gathers three domestic ensembles for a Jazz face-off! With styles crossing the traditional and modern, the eastern and western, and Standard and Latin, they will set the summer night on fire! The first ensemble, Sizhukong, is famous for its innovative style that fuses the improvisational element of Jazz with traditional Chinese music. Having released three albums, Sizhukong, Paper Eagle, and Spin, the seven-year-old band received numerous recognition from the Golden Melody Awards and the Golden Indie Music Awards. Graceful and spontaneous, its music is perfect for listeners to swing along! The second group, Orbit Folks, aims to bring back different kinds of traditional folk music that are lost among the “orbit”. Founded in 2009, the band released their first album The Missing Link in 2010, which won Best Album Producer and Best World Fusion Album in the 2011 Golden Melody Awards. Music supervisor Martijn Vanbuel has sought to bring music in Taiwan to another level. The combination of folk music and Jazz has delighted many music lovers. Soy La Ley is one of the few Afro-Cuban Jazz bands in Taiwan. The band name, coming from Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez’s album title, means “I am the law,” which stands for the members’ perseverance and passion for music. Leader Vincent Hsu founded the band in Taiwan in 2010 after eight years of absorbing the Latin Jazz culture in New York’s Spanish Harlem. Integrating Jazz with Cuban music, the band will surely bring unexpected surprises to the audience’s ears.

jazz history,” Grammy Award winning saxophone giant Joe Lovano has distinguished himself for some three decades as a prescient and path finding force in the arena of creative music. The secret to Lovano’s success is his fearless ability to push the conceptual and thematic choices he has made in his quest to find new modes of artistic expression within the jazz idiom. Since 2009, Lovano’s main vehicle for his exploration has been Us Five a dynamic young band—which features drummers Otis Brown III and Francisco Mela, bassist Esperanza Spalding, and pianist James Weidman. The band’s most recent release, the Grammy Nominated – Bird Songs*— Lovano’s 22nd album for *Blue Note Record’s (the release of which marked his 20th year on the label) is an exploration of the Charlie Parker’s songbook that breaks the mold of Bird tribute records. “I didn’t approach this as a tribute record,” states Joe Lovano, dispelling right off the bat any preconception that his latest album is a mere retread. In 2011 the JJA (Jazz Journalist’s Association) named Bird Songs Recording of the the Year and named Us Five Small Ensemble of the Year. It was also the Downbeat Editor’s Pick for

Album of the Year. Us Five’s debut recording—2009’s Folk Art*—was a wide-

Critics Poll. Lovano completed a double-triple of awards by also winning the JJA’s Musician and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year, and DownBeat’s Jazz Artist and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year. Lovano was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1952, and began playing alto saxophone as a child. A prophetic infant photo of Lovano shows him cradled in his mother’s arms along with a saxophone. His father, tenor saxophonist Tony “Big T” Lovano, schooled Lovano not only in the basics, but in dynamics and interpretation, and regularly exposed him to live performances of international jazz artists such as Sonny Stitt, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Gene Ammons, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Upon graduation from high school he attended the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston. Lovano’s early professional gigs were as a sideman with organists Lonnie Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, and a three-year tour with the Woody Herman Thundering Herd from 1976 to 1979.

Lovano’s illustrious relationship with Blue Note Records began in 1991 and includes eight Grammy nominations with a win in the Best Large Ensemble category for 2000’s 52nd Street Themes. Also In recent years, Lovano has spent a good deal of time collaborating, both in the studio and the concert hall, with two other premier tenor saxophonists of his generation – Dave Liebman and the late Michael Brecker in the collective Saxophone Summit. Their first release Gathering of the Spirits was released in 2004 on Telarc. After the untimely passing of Michael Brecker, Lovano and Liebman were joined by Ravi Coltrane on their acclaimed sophomore release, Seraphic Light. In early 2008, Joe replaced Joshua Redman in the tenor saxophone chair of the touring and studio ensemble, the SFJazz Collective. Also in the Collective were trumpeter Dave Douglas, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and fellow Blue Note Recording Artist vibraphonist Stefon Harris. They joined

Trumpeter, trombonist and composer Michael Mossman has been active on the international scene since the age of 17. Mr. Mossman has performed and recorded with his own groups and with bands led by a virtual who's who of the music industry. He currently is lead trumpeter with Jazz at Lincoln Center's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Michael's solo album, the Orisha Suite, was nominated for a Latin Grammy. Michael is also featured as lead trumpet and arranger on the Grammy nominated album, Un Noche Inolvidable by the Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Following stints as lead trumpet with the Machito Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, Michael became the musical director of Blue Note Record's "young lion" group, Out of the Blue. He recorded four albums for Blue Note with this group before disbanding to join the Horace Silver Quintet. In addition to Horace's group, Michael has toured and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, McKoy Tyner, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Zawinul, Slide Hampton, Toshiko Akiyoshi, George Gruntz, Bob Mintzer, Steve Turre, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Tom Pierson, and the Charles Mingus Orchestra. Michael has also been a key performer in Latin Jazz since his days with Machito. Mr. Mossman has performed and recorded with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Chico O'Farrill, Ray Barretto, Daniel Ponce, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Paquito D'Rivera, Bebo Valdez and Michel Camilo (including a screen appearance in the motion picture Two Much). Mr. Mossman has composed and arranged scores for Joe Henderson's Grammy winning Big Band album. Michael Mossman has performed classical and contemporary classical pieces including with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. He has recorded the Daniel Schnyder Trumpet Sonata on the Koch Schwann label and has recorded two solo classical albums for MM1. Michael has held positions on the faculties of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Rutgers University, The New School for Social Research, BloomďŹ eld College, Manhattanville College, and the New Jersey Summer Arts Institute. Michael is currently Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York City.

Hart is an active saxophonist in America. Hart's Jazz study began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he studied with Bill Pierce, Andy McGhee, and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. In addition, he made many friends at Berklee, but the most important was Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove's first three records. Hart considers Hargrove to be his brother in life and music. He even used Hargrove on his first recording For the First Time. In this period of time, Hart also worked on a Masters Degree at Queens College. There he had the opportunity to learn from the great Jimmy Heath and Donald Byrd. Hart felt blessed and honored when Mr. Heath produced his second recording Don't You Know I Care. Hart has earned his Masters Degree and recorded three more CDs as a leader. The latest, Here I Stand on the Impulse label, has earned Hart a 1998 Grammy nomination for "Best Jazz Instrumental Solo." He spends a great deal of time on the road with his band performing and giving clinics. He is constantly trying to get to higher levels on his horn and in his writing.

In 1993, his entire catalog of work—scores, recording tapes, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia and writings—were acquired by the Library of Congress. Mingus was honored with a US postage stamp. Today, his spirit looms over the Mingus repertory bands wherever they perform.

Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band performed Thursday nights from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city from May 2004 until October 2008, when it began "Mingus Mondays" at Jazz Standard where it alternates with the Mingus Orchestra and

Avishai Cohen is a New York City-based jazz musician originally from Tel Aviv, Israel. He has 3rd place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk jazz trumpet competition in 1997, and recorded and played with many notable jazz artists.

Since moving to New York City in 2000, Grammy Award winning tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery has become one of the Jazz world's most talented rising stars and in-demand sidemen.At only 37 he has recorded seven CDs as a leader and been on numerous recordings as a sideman.
