FROM THE COMMITTEE SE AS ON ... ER NT WI E TH OF S EK WE E FIV ST LA E TH TO E OM WE LC I am sure we’ve all experienced the joy of winning, the agony of defeat and the satisfaction of having played or watched a great game of football. A season of coaching your team and seeing progress and the kids developing. Or just the sheer fun of football. Playing a good game and leaving nothing in the tank at the final whistle. Or just getting the kids involved in a team sport which delivers all sorts of good things. The fields are brilliant, the grass pitches are in excellent condition and the artificial... well, just superb!! At the end of last month we had a weekend of celebrating our 25th year as WSAFC. Current and former members joined to reminisce and celebrate a club that formed when the Grey Lynn and Pt Chev clubs combined their membership of just under 400 players in 1989. There were many familiar faces who to this day play active roles in coaching, playing or administration. The Men’s First Team is top of the table with five games to play. Three of these are home games with a 5pm kick off. It’s great football and

a brilliant atmosphere. Please come on down and support the boys as they push for what will be a year on year promotion. On a more serious note, a real ongoing issue with the constant use of Seddon Fields is the significant increase in pressure on parking at the club and surrounding streets. Please be careful and observe the yellow no parking on the northern side of Meola Road. Please bear in mind the parked cars narrow the street and make it difficult for any through traffic and potentially dangerous for pedestrians trying to cross to the cars illegally parked on the grass verge. It is frustrating, not just for club members, but for the neighbourhood and greater local community who use Meola Road. Just last Saturday we were informed of one of our junior club members being hit by a car crossing Meola Road. Fortunately for us all, the driver of the car was passing through at an appropriate speed and able to avoid causing a serious accident. The club is striving to solve this issue with the assistance of the

local board and our surrounding neighbours. Whilst there are issues and pressure week round, by far, the biggest problem period for parking is Saturday morning. There are a number of things we can do as club members. If your kids are playing the early games (finishing before 10am) please use the ample parking on Motions Rd prior to the zoo and MOTAT opening hours. The club will ask your grade coordinators to reinforce this. If you are able to, walk or bike to the game. We have plenty of bike stands at the the club. We are currently working on achieving more access to parking for particular windows but in the meantime, if you can carpool, walk or bike, particularly on the Saturday or Sunday mornings, it will help ease this pressure. With the existing car park extension we have had bike stands installed at the Motions Road end of the clubrooms, so please try and make use of these. Go the Springs! And we will see you down at Seddon. Regards

WSAFC MEN’S FIRST TEAM NRFL DIVISION 1 Since our last report we have unfortunately been knocked out of the Chatham Cup. It was an extremely close game against Bay Olympic where we gave the Premier league team a few scares but they overcame our efforts to win 2-1.

defeat we have been on a five game winning streak.

In the league, we have managed to go on a very good run with the only real blips being a draw away at lowly Papatoetoe in round 11 and a defeat in Hamilton against a red hot in form Melville United team in Round 12. Since that POS

After winning the close encounter with Hibiscus Coast this weekend we are in a very healthy position going into our last five games. Our squad depth has really been tested lately and every player who is getting an opportunity to play is grabbing the chance and really stepping up. There is a real togetherness and we are all very focused and know we haven’t achieved anything yet. We get a chance this

Friday night 8th August to heap more pressure on the chasing pack when we play local rivals Metro at Phyliss St Reserve. An exciting August ahead for sure! Outstanding player of the month (July) goes to Sam Brotherton who has been able to play extra games with the school holiday being on and not having to play for his school. Other very notable performers have been Scott Midgley, Patch Bowen, Maurie Wasi, Liam Mulrooney and Sam Burfoot. The rest of the boys have been very solid performers and nobody has let the side down. Lastly, I would like to wish all the best to Alec Beresford and Luke Petrie who have left Auckland to take jobs in other locations and to Nicolai Berry and Scott Midgley who are leaving in early August back to the US on Footballing and Academic Scholarships. I would like to thank you all for your efforts this season. You have all been a pleasure to coach. Lastly, please all club members get along to our games in this last month of the season and support the boys. We need a final push and we will hopefully be a Premier League club next season. Cheers .

The jersey featured the colours of our founding clubs Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn Celtic and proved to be a popular hit with members who reminisced about the good old days over 1989 priced beer and wine until late in the night. CLUB PHYSIO CONCUSSION IN FOOTBALL Concussion is a hot topic in sporting circles at the moment as there have been some recent high profile episodes of reacreational athletes and professional athletes being concussed in the news.

physical signs are evident on MRI or CT scans, but the damage is real and can be lethal. It appears that children are more at risk from concussion, and repeated concussions can cause permanent damage to neurological function.

There were a couple of instances in the recent FIFA World Cup where both a Uruguayan and a German player returned to the field for approximately ten minutes with what appeared to be clear concussion symptoms, only to be removed later from the field. In retrospect, these players should not have been allowed back onto the field of play.

1. Symptoms—somatic (eg, headache), cognitive (eg, feeling like in a fog) and/or emotional symptoms (eg, lability)

Signs of concussion

Concussion can occur through trauma to the head (direct contact from player, post, ball) or from sudden acceleration of the brain within the bony skull even without contact when suddenly stopping such as in a car accident. Damage to the brain can occur, along with bleeding which can increase the pressure inside the head. Sometimes this can occur over a period of up to 24 hours. Often no

OPEN TO

THE PUBLIC

2. Physical signs (eg, loss of consciousness (LOC), amnesia) 3. Behavioural changes (eg, irritability) 4. Cognitive impairment (eg, slowed reaction times) 5. Sleep disturbance (eg, insomnia) If any one or more of these components are present, a concussion should be suspected and the player should be removed from the field. WHEN IN DOUBT – TAKE THEM OUT!

Treatment of concussion If you suspect a player has had concussion please remove them from play immediately, and advise them to see a medical professional. If you are playing on the weekend send them with someone to the local A+ E or Auckland hospital. The player should have someone with them at all times. Players should not be allowed to return to play until they have been cleared by a sports physician or similiarly recognized medical professional. Gradual return to physical and mental activity is essential and if symptoms are created during those activities players should return to less load. We are now open Monday to Fri 7am-6pm and Saturday mornings, and there is no charge for ACC consultations for members. To make an appointment with any of our team please text me on 021 673 732.

Stay on your feet and see you on the sideline!

RECORD BREAKER!

The first week of every holidays is Coerver Holiday Programme time at Springs and this one was special for many reasons. They are always action packed and full of fun events but this week we had a World Cup of football (and we all know how exciting that was) running in tandem as the semi finals were contested in Brazil. On top of that we had a weather situation with storm like conditions for four of the five days. This didn’t seem to dampen either the numbers that turned up or their spirits.

With between 120 and 150 kids each day (a record for Holiday Programmes at Springs) the Coerver Coaches had their hands full and the kids were there for football so they didn’t seem to mind the weather a bit. But some mornings the cones and balls were 12 August 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

blown from one pitch to the next and even goals were blown over! The worst of the rain seemed to time itself nicely while the Cup Semis were being played and so that was a grand excuse to stay inside and watch the action unfold. The flags were flying and the club-

house was gripped with the tension of the matches on the Wednesday and the Thursday as the pictures will attest. With so many attending it was a treat to see how well the artificial turf coped with the periods of heavy rain. Every corner being able to be used by the various age

groups. Inside the clubhouse the heaters and the widescreen TV’s maintained a warm and toasty amenity with two packed sections for group viewing. Spontaneous chanting would start up as if the kids were at the stadium. “ARGENTINA, ARGENTINA….” But even that didn’t do the trick for Messi and his men. On day three Stu provided some extra entertainment with his version of the ice challenge to great peals of laughter from parents and players alike. As he was soaked from above with a barrel of ice cold water. By the end of the week there was a glow of achievement across the whole programme as the children performed their ball mastery and skills display for the watching parents and received their awards and trophies for their respective triumphs to rounds of cheering. This was indeed a special week enjoyed by all and will indeed be tough to top… until perhaps the next holidays roll around.

The White Stripes travelling group including Coach, Manager and parents will fly out on 30th September and return on 7th October. This football exchange will be the first ever held in Rarotonga between WSAFC and Cook Island teams and may pave the way for future visits between the two clubs.
