P4 EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN’S REPORT TO THE AGM

Firstly, welcome to the AGM of the Western Springs Association Football I’d like to start by saying that it was quite a testing start to 2018 for the Executive, our Committees and all of the Grade Coordinators and Volunteers. Firstly, we had the transition from Neil and Rico to new First Team Coaching Staff. Then we also had to deal with the introduction of the NZ Football COMET database for registrations. The continuous delays and lack of support during the COMET implementation can only really be described as a shambles and caused immense difficulties for our staff and Volunteers. I would really like to acknowledge the hard work and many hours that were put into this by our staff, in particular Paul Rutland, Tracy Cunnington and Andy Vernon, and by the whole of the Junior Committee and the Grade coordinators. Thank you and I hope and pray that the system works far better for all members in 2019. I have spoken on this previously, however I’d like to say again a very big thank you to Neil Emblen and Rico Wilson who both left the Club at the end of last year. Both of these fine Coaches poured a lot of themselves into this Club and we are always very grateful to them, their families and their support staff. From the Men’s perspective we welcomed Chris Zoricich on board and I’d like to congratulate Chris and all of his staff on a terrific first season in charge. Chris brings a real level of professionalism and passion and I wish him and the Team all the success they deserve. On the Women’s side the transition wasn’t as smooth as we would have liked, however I can only say how very grateful I am to Matt Upton and Rebecca O’Neill for all of their effort, support and maturity in dealing with a difficult season. I must also acknowledge the time and effort that Warwick Hooper put in to assist Matt and Rebecca, so a big thank you Warwick. We have continued to invest in facilities at the Club this season, with the new scoreboard, the renovated changing rooms and the Box nets all adding to the experience at Springs. At the

Club for 2018.

Executive we have begun discussions about our priorities for the next capital improvement projects and a number of good ideas have come from this which will be investigated further in the new year. With regard to the proposed Meola Road streetscape improvements, cycleway and proposed off street parking, all I can say is that the wheels of Local Government bureaucracy are turning very slowly. At both the Auckland Transport led Local Community Consultation Group and the wider Regional Facilities led Western Springs Precinct Group meetings, I have made our position very clear. We support improvements to Meola Road, including the addition of a cycleway and the elimination of Parking on the street on the condition that a safe and practical carpark is developed and built on the land between Field 3 and MOTAT. We are all in favour of improvements to Meola Road that provide for a safer and better integrated streetscape for all users including pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and vehicles. We should continue to support this and encourage as many of our community to use alternative means of transport s possible. However, we do need to also recognise, that this is not always possible, that a large number of our members and visitors travel from other parts of Auckland and that safe parking is still an absolute priority. Personally, I have decided that after 4 years in this role and previously as Treasurer that its time for change and for me to take a break. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and all of my involvement in the various Committees and feel privileged to have been involved with the Club and some of the large changes that have occurred. I feel more confident than ever though, that the Club is in a very strong position financially, but also particularly with the calibre of committed people we have here, who give up an enormous amount of their time and energy to ensure its success. Thank you to all of those who have

served and continue to serve the Club. I’d like to particularly acknowledge Joanne Powell, Zoran Jerkovic and Paul Rutland who have all been there with me the last 10 years and who have all been invaluable supporters and terrific to work with. Also, to my wife Alex and my family, thanks for your support. To the Executive, the other Committees, the Staff and all of our Members, thank you again and I wish you all the very best for the future. Please remember that this Club represents a wonderful community and it is the whole community that is vital to the success of this Club. Success comes in many forms. I look forward to supporting this Club for many years to come.

2018 has absolutely flown by with lots of changes taking place both on and off the field – both at Springs and within the New Zealand Football landscape! Term 1 was super busy, as always, with organising our teams for 2018. With over 170 junior/youth teams playing weekly from April through to September the time our volunteer coordinators give, particularly during February and March, is invaluable! Our football programmes kicked off during Term 1 and these have grown steadily throughout each term to provide opportunities for all players to access further training. As the season began, our weekly in-house football kicked off our weekends on a Friday evening and continued to be a great success – and come rain or shine the kids kept playing, smiling and showing off their skills. Saturdays were again action-packed with games coming thick and fast from when the 5th & 6th grade kids arrive with wooly hats on shortly before 8am! We have great facilities at the club and in trying to ensure we make as much of them as possible and provide plenty of training/playing time, a big thank you to our coaches/managers who work together to ensure the changeover between games/trainings are seamless and allow the kids the time with the ball that they crave!

During 2018, it’s been fantastic to see the progress made by Springs players of all levels – some of them taking their first steps into football (with shorts past their knees)! and others realising their dreams of representing New Zealand’s senior and age group teams – achieving individual and team successes. These achievements show that dreams do come true, and are amazing signs of what can be achieved when one ‘dares to dream’!

A common type of waste found on our football pitches and surrounds is electrical insulation tape. It’s found everywhere at Seddon Fields: on the turf, in the dugouts and changing rooms, in the carpark, on the footpaths, in the gardens, on the grass pitches, sometimes even in the rubbish bins! A lot of players, mainly seniors, still use tape to keep their socks up or hold their shin pads in place. It’s used just once, usually on average for 90 minutes, before being thrown away. But it never really goes away... Insulation tape can’t be recycled and it takes decades to break down in a landfill. Even then it only breaks down into micro plastic. It’s this micro plastic that’s causing a new wave of hazard; one that’s now found in our drinking water and in our food. But most of the insulation tape on sports fields doesn’t even make it into landfill. A lot of it stays on the fringes of our parks and playing fields. It gets chopped into smaller pieces by mowers and makes its way into local waterways, where it contributes to the global plastic problem.
