What a season! It seems a bit crazy that the season for most, is all over, though not as mad as it is only three months until Christmas. At the club we have just wrapped up two weeks of prize-giving ceremonies, getting through 170 junior and youth teams over six sessions. To those that helped make it happen, you know who you are, a hat-tip of respect to you. Last week at the Youth Awards at Auckland Girls Grammar the ultimate award of Western Springs AFC 2018 Youth Player of the Year was awarded to Emma Pijnenburg and Bradley Wilson. An outstanding achievement and we salute you, you have worked incredibly hard and we are proud to acknowledge that effort and to have you at Springs. If you are looking to develop your skills over the off-season, keep an eye out for news of our holiday and academy programmes. There are opportunities for all to join Emma and Brad on their pathway or to make yourself the best footballer you can be. JAVA

Since the beginning of the season, the Java team has been attending weekly HPU Skill Centre sessions (run by Andy Vernon) to help improve and further develop their abilities, with the hope of qualifying for the 2018 Weir Rose Bowl. The WRB Qualifying Tournament recently took place at McLennan Park. In a round robin format, the girls played an epic 5x 50min games, across 2 days, against Ellerslie, Buckland’s Beach (who had combined with Fencibles), Papakura (who had combined with Manurewa, Beachlands Maraetai, Drury United and Papatoetoe),

Three Kings United and Eastern Suburbs AFC. The team performed well, and showed great energy and determination in what was a very close competition. Finishing 4th overall, secured their spot and will give the girls the opportunity to represent both Western Springs AFC and Auckland Football Federation at this years WRB. A fantastic result, following a great weekend of football!

This year across many of our Junior grades including 10th Grade we have taken a different approach with our Development Teams. Rather that creating an A and B team we created two balanced teams. These two 10th Grade teams then train together twice a week in our HPU sessions, but play as White and Green in the AFF competition. Both these teams were entered into the recent Fencilbes tournament to compete against the best 10th Grade teams from across Auckland. As a testament to the depth we have at the club at this grade both teams Green and White made the semi finals against teams from Eastern Suburbs and Onehunga. Team White won their semi final against Onehunga whilst Green lost theirs to

Eastern Suburbs. Team White then won a thrilling final against Suburbs in a penalty shootout to be crowned Champions! To have both our teams in the semi final and to win the tournament was a fantastic result for the club.

WHAT A WAY TO FINISH THE SEASON! The sun was shining and team Fiorentina had their final run around last Saturday at the Western Springs 11th Grade Tournament. They fiercely fought some of their traditional season rivals and a few new ones to end up unbeaten in the finals... a tight fought game with the ball swinging from end to end they drew 0–0 at the end of normal time. An exciting five minutes each way up next, golden goal... still no score first half of extra time. I’m pretty sure the parents were more stressed than the girls.

One minute from the end, before penalties, our girls graciously allowed the visitors to score a goal. Always thinking of others and willing to share, Fiorentina came a worthy second place. As one of team parents said: “Fantastic for us to have the girls and parents part of our lives. A real “pick me up” to see their smiling faces at football each time.” Can’t wait for summer footie...

GREEN CORNER SPRINGS’ SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE

OUR AWESOME NEW CLUB COMPOSTING AND RECYCLING SYSTEMS ARE PROVING TO BE A BIG HIT! We’ve managed to divert 4,320 litres of recyclable waste (mainly plastic bottles and glass) and 5,040 litres of organic waste away from landfill in just our first season. That’s the equivalent of the two elephants, Burma and Anjalee, over the road at the Zoo. Amazing work everyone! The new sustainability system is helping to reduce our environmental footprint as well as keeping the club looking clean and tidy - no more overflowing rubbish bins on busy weekends at Springs. The recyclable waste we collect gets another life and is turned into other products, while all the organic waste is commercially composted and used to help grow new plants and trees. Please keep reminding your players and supporters to sort their waste into the right bins. They’re easy to find all around the artificial turf, outside the changing rooms, on the balcony and inside the clubrooms. Remember, all food and beverage packaging sold at the club café is 100% compostable, including the coffee cups and lids. Because they are made of organic materials, the coffee cups cannot be recycled. So please make sure you “hit the target” and get them in the right bins (the green ones) after your morning fix. The next villain on our zero waste ‘hit list’ is the plastic tape used by many footballers. More about that in the next issue… In the meantime, thanks for your support. We want to be not only the best club in New Zealand, but the greenest too! If you have any questions or feedback, please contact Jane Welsh at JaneMareeWelsh@gmail.com

8 September 2018 www.wsafc.org.nz

An Australian study has found that a ratio of >2.11 had the greatest injury risk at 16.7% in elite rugby league players. The same study also found that exposure to a high chronic workload could decrease injury risk, which means that players that were consistently training enough were at lower risk of injuries during weeks where more game time was expected. This can also explain why players returning from injury are at higher risk of re-injury if not appropriately and gradually eased back into football. Inseason, players are at higher risk of being injured if they aren’t training often enough or if there is a period of time where cup and league games are being played close together, these are periods where there is an acute spike in load. Plan ahead if possible and gradually increase training intensity, frequency or duration in the lead up. Go for an extra run or two or have strengthening sessions on alternate days. How we can help at Back To Your Feet Physiotherapy

is by assessing your biomechanics during running or change of direction type movements, strength and balance testing, and tailoring your training load to you and helping you back to play after injury In conclusion, train hard but train smart, training intensity should match game intensity. Aim to increase your training load gradually to avoid having acute spikes in load whether it may be playing in multiple games a week or rushing back to play a game. Football is a team sport, the more available healthy players are for selection, the more it helps the success of the squad during the season. Stay on your feet
