GREEN CORNER SPRINGS’ SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE
LET’S TACKLE TAPE A common type of waste found on our football pitches and surrounds is electrical insulation tape. It’s found everywhere at Seddon Fields: on the turf, in the dugouts and changing rooms, in the carpark, on the footpaths, in the gardens, on the grass pitches, sometimes even in the rubbish bins! A lot of players, mainly seniors, still use tape to keep their socks up or hold their shin pads in place. It’s used just once, usually on average for 90 minutes, before being thrown away. But it never really goes away... Insulation tape can’t be recycled and it takes decades to break down in a landfill. Even then it only breaks down into micro plastic. It’s this micro plastic that’s causing a new wave of hazard; one that’s now found in our drinking water and in our food. But most of the insulation tape on sports fields doesn’t even make it into landfill. A lot of it stays on the fringes of our parks and playing fields. It gets chopped into smaller pieces by mowers and makes its way into local waterways, where it contributes to the global plastic problem. It’s not just an issue for us, it’s a problem for many other sports codes in New Zealand too. But it’s one that together we can easily solve. Try using ‘old school’ reusable elastic garters to keep those socks up. Velcro ‘stays’ are great to hold shin pads in place too. They’re cheap and can be used many times from season to season. Most of our Springs kids use them, so why not adults too? You’ll be doing the club - and the planet - a big favour! If you have any questions about this or our other sustainability initiatives, contact Jane Welsh at janemareewelsh@gmail.com
“TOGETHER LET’S SORT IT OUT”
DID YOU KNOW? New Zealanders throw away 295 million takeaway coffee cups a year! Most end up in landfill. Our club cups are 100% compostable. Better yet, try bringing a reusable cup with you next season.
