FROM THE COMMITTEE As we head into the warmer months there is no let off in the volume of football being played at the club. We are still seeing plenty of kids involved in Coerver and Academy programs, plus the Summer league has proved to be very popular. This has been a great option for the majority of ages to keep playing the game they love all year round. We have added additional signage to the grounds explaining the rules to keep the fields in top condition and it is up to you as members to ensure you are wearing correct footwear and not jumping the fence! As a

Hi Members

reminder running shoes and bare feet will flatten the field and are therefore not an option. Next year looks like another busy one and we will look to open registrations for Juniors/ Youth early in the New Year with Senior registration already open. I would suggest registering early to avoid the rush and there may be some grades where numbers have to be limited due to ground capacity. Currently with the way school holidays are falling the season looks like it will start at the beginning of May. We will provide further information to all members

on the kick off to the 2015 season as soon as it is locked down and communicate this with you as early as possible. It will be an important year for New Zealand football with the U20’s FIFA World Cup taking starting at the end of May in New Zealand, so there will be some fantastic football to watch in our own backyard. Have and safe and enjoyable Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all again next year. Thanks Michael Hope Junior/Youth Committee

You Volunteers

That volunteers are the back-bone of amateur sport is well recognized. A strong club is often reflected by the number of volunteers involved in keeping the teams playing, the members training and the club running. For the 2014 year, we estimate there were around 400 volunteers at WSAFC underpinning the strength of Western Springs as now one of the strongest clubs in NZ. This volunteer group comprised the managers, coaches, administrators, governance teams and all those people who helped when a helping hand was needed. It is this group who have made WSAFC the community hub it is and enabled all the teams and individuals to have such a great year and who we want to here both recognize and thank.

The fields are busier than ever, the level of commitment, enthusiasm and skill from players is fantastic and the results speak for themselves no matter which grade you look at. More people have attended the coaching training sessions than ever before which is not surprising given the over 1400 kids who now make up the junior members. Congratulations to everyone who makes WSAFC one of NZ’s premier clubs and thank you on behalf of all the members to all those volunteers without whom WSAFC could not function.May you have a wonderful Christmas, we look forward to seeing you back and rearing to go in 2015 From the WSAFC Executive Team

Richard Wilson

The club is pleased to announce the arrival of Richard Wilson (Rico) to WSAFC. Rico has a strong background in Women’s Premier football and comes to the club after 17 years of involvement at Eastern Suburbs and is well known and respected in the football community.

Rico is involved in AFF player development, is the Auckland AFF Womens head coach and will play a strong role in the clubs’ player academy and holiday programmes. This is a strong signal from the Executive of the intention to strengthen and support the Women’s football at WSAFC and know that all members will welcome Rico and make him a part of our football family at Springs. The club also would like to take the opportunity to recognise the superb effort of Matthew Upton last year in maintaining our premier position.

WELCOME McDONALDS WSAFC are very pleased to welcome McDonald’s Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn on board as a principal sponsor of Western Springs AFC. McDonald’s connection with the “beautiful game” extends from their global sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup, through to supporting football in New Zealand for over 10 years. In addition to the national sponsorship of the Small Whites programme and McDonald’s Skills Zone, McDonald’s franchisees and restaurants around the country support the local clubs in their community as many of our members will have noticed when competing against other clubs during the season.

Beyond Western Springs, McDonald’s restaurants are supporting junior football teams and clubs around the country. At a national level they are increasing their support of junior football, within New Zealand Football’s ‘Whole of Football’ approach.

restaurants are supporting WSAFC and we look forward to working with them to help WSAFC players, coaches and supporters enjoy the 2015 season, and maybe even kick start the dreams of future All Whites and Football Ferns.

We are really excited by this new partnership and value McDonalds extensive involvement with football in NZ and internationally. Both the Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn McDonalds

Welcome on-board to McDonalds Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn and thank you for your support of our club.

There are 164 McDonald’s restaurants across New Zealand and around 80 percent of them are owned and operated by franchisees including Pt Chevalier’s Mark and Margaret Jenkins. They live in the local area, and watch their grandchildren who play in the Junior grades at WSAFC. As parents and grandparents they recognise that local sports teams, schools and other community groups require ongoing support, and often help out when they can. Mark and Margaret have been witness to the growth at Western Springs, watching as it has become one of the most impressive set ups in New Zealand. “When we started talking with the WSAFC team we were impressed with how the club is run and their commitment to its ongoing strength. We see great opportunities to work with the club to encourage even more local children to play football, and to assist coaches, parents and club volunteers. We want kids to live an active and balanced lifestyle and we want the neighbourhoods in which we operate to thrive.” 6 December 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

What is it?

McDonald’s Skills Zone (MSZ) is our new initiative with New Zealand Football, as part of the Small Whites junior football programme. MSZ coaches handbooks have been sent to every federation and club in New Zealand, as a resource for grass roots ‘mum and dad’ coaches. In addition to coaching exercises, kids aged 4-12 can take on MSZ challenges across the five core football skills. If they complete all the challenges they earn bronze, silver and then gold awards. They receive a certificate that includes a perforated McDonald’s voucher as a reward for participating and achieving the award.

Why are we doing it?

McDonald’s has supported the Small Whites for over a decade. We wanted to re-energise our support of junior football, address the need of better resourcing amateur coaches, and help get Kiwi kids active. MSZ is a great programme that further cements McDonald’s relationship with kids playing football and their parents, and is a perfect example of our restaurants being a ‘good neighbour’. There are also some big football events coming up including FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014, and the FIFA Under 20 World Cup being held in New Zealand in 2015.

Where can I find out more?

Visit smallwhites.co.nz/skillszone and you can see the MSZ coaches handbook and other collateral.

CLUB PHYSIO

REST AND RECOVERY

As the festive season winds up and there is a break between summer 7 aside competitions and winter football it is a good time to factor in a break to your football training – especially if you have been going all year round. With the amount of trainings and games on offer, prioritizing a period where you unload from the physical stressors of football allows the body to recover and recuperate, meaning the little ‘niggles’ that have been bugging you through the season can get a chance to settle. It is also a good time to commit a rehabilitation programme to ensure they don’t continue to interfere with your enjoyment of the game or your ability to perform. Having a break from football doesn’t mean you should stop exercising entirely… cross training through

summer means you will cope better with the ramp up in pre-season training. By doing different sorts of low impact cardio such as gardening, swimming, paddle boarding or cycling means you can get outside and enjoy the benefits of Vitamin D from the sun too. Just make sure you build into those activities gradually too and try and maintain good technique at all times! Doing a basic strength programme over the break can also mean that you come into the season more conditioned which can help reduce the risk of injuries. I recommend doing the FIFA 11+ http://f-marc.com/11plus/ exercises/ at least a couple of times a week to build up your strength and conditioning. I will be away in Morocco with Auckland City FC this December for the Club World Cup along with Sam

Burfoot… hopefully we can get a result and extend the stay. The clinic will be open with reduced hours over the Christmas and New Years period to allow your physio’s to have a well-earned break too!

The new playing strip introduced this year will continue for next season, with all players, Junior and Senior, required to wear Western Springs white socks, playing shorts and club playing shirt when representing the club on the field. It is a reflection of the pride we have in our club and facilities, and our teams have one of the most distinctive strips in the country – you can always tell when a WSAFC team is playing when you drive past a football field on a weekend. All of the gear this year is available online, with plenty of stock. Gear will not be part of the registration process, you just need to purchase any items you require. It is simple – go to the ONLINE SHOP tab on the WSAFC website, and order your gear – it will be delivered direct to your home. So, if you need a new pair of sock or shorts, or want to buy a club shirt in the new lightweight material, go online and order. You can do it any time. Training shirts, boots and supporters gear are also available to order.

SPRINGS TH 8 GRADE As far as football cups go, few can be more impressive than the Winston Reid Trophy. The stunning hand-carved trophy was won by a team made up mainly from the Springs 8th Grade Development Squad on Sunday, November 23rd, at the Akokura Five-a-side Football Tournament at Papakura City FC.

SPRINGS VICTORIOUS AT MAORI TOURNAMENT

The competition was conceived eight years ago, with just four teams participating in its inaugural tournament. It now features 44 7-15th grade teams from as far afield as Gisborne, and is growing every year. Funds raised from the annual tournament help the trust to promote football among Maori youth in NZ. On a beautiful sunny day at Papakura, the Springs 8th grade team, organised by Vance Murdoch, faced arch rivals TKU AC Milan ‘A’ in their opening pool match in a repeat of the teams’ earlier match up this season at the Waitemata AFC tournament, where TKU won 1-2 and went to win on the competition. This time, after another exiting game in which Springs dominated play, the scores were locked at 2-2 at full-time, with Springs awarded the points on the corner count-back rule.

The Akokura tournament is organised by the Aotearoa Football Charitable Trust, led by Coerver NZ North’s Phil Parker (Ngati Manawa), in association with Maori Football NZ. The trust is made up of well-known Maori football identities, including Leo Bertos, Ross Nicholson and Mia Jackman. It works to promote football, education, health and wellbeing in the Maori community. 10 December 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

Next up were Drury Hornets, who were dispatched 13-0, followed by the hosts Papakura, also convincingly beaten 8-0. That put the team into the Championship Semi-Final against TKU Bayern Munich ‘B’. The Springs boys were on fire in this game and an impressive 4-1 win put them through to the Championship Final against… you guessed it… TKU AC Milan! This time the boys clicked up several gears, dominating possession and playing a fast

passing and pressing game the opposition couldn’t deal with. A very satisfying and hard earned 3-1 win meant the boys picked up the handsome trophy, named after West Ham and All Whites captain Winston Reid, who is doing his bit to support fellow Maori in the game. It was a fantastic achievement after an enjoyable and well run tournament. The team was: Fenton Murdoch Harrison Lloyd Theo Gorman Ari Bailey Will McKee Zane Marsh

THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAP SATURDAY 21ST FEBRUARY 2015 (CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2015 SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN GOOD CONDITION, TO BE ‘GIFTED’ TO KIDS WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR THE NEW SEASON.. How it works: From early February there will be a boot collection box upstairs in the club house. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box. During the Club Open Day on Saturday 21st February, you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2015 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots. Strictly one pair of boots per individual. The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not. Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return. Any surplus boots will be donated to a Club who needs them. www.wsafc.org.nz December 2014 11

WHITE STRIPES The end of year trip to Rarotonga was a massive success on every level for the bright young female football stars of Western Springs. After many months of fundraising the U17’s landed in Rarotonga and were welcomed with frangipani ‘eis’ (flower necklaces) and a warm tropical evening. So warm in fact that we were all compelled to go directly to the lagoon for a midnight swim. That very afternoon was our first scheduled match versus Tupapa Marairenga U20’s Women’s Team. They were current leaders in the local Championship and presented a stiff challenge for our girls with their physicality, speed and power with their long range shots. The football was competitive and challenging and they were not used to our style of passing game at all on the island. The result was a 3-2 victory for Springs who fell behind from two stunning shots from half way and had to claw back to level in the last 5 minutes with the winner coming from some individual brilliance from Brooke in the last breath of the game. Our accommodation was at the recently built CIFA complex and was very comfortable without being flash. We had facilities available to train at any time and outside of the training we made good use of the local attractions including visiting popular swimming spots and hotels where we could enjoy snorkelling and watching the whales playing outside the reef. We took a lagoon cruise and had lunch on the motu. 12 December 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

WHITE STRIPES WOW THE LOCALS

Nothing too strenuous as that afternoon was our second game vs a Rarotonga Selection Squad. We lost that game 1-0 with the local girls finding the back of the net from a set piece but otherwise not really having many more chances. Whether it was the heat or the fact that we had been out on the lagoon all day we don’t know but the fire of the first game wasn’t there in the first half. After the halftime break there was a lot more energy in our game and chances came and went but luck was not on our side. There wasn’t time to be too depressed about the score as we had to zoom into the showers and change to meet our check-in for Island Night at Te Vara Nui. The next day was another training day followed by a visit to the local golf club to find out how skilful the girls were without using their feet. The answer was no Lydia Ko’s in the White Stripes which is a comfort really. The next morning was an early start to catch the local market followed in the afternoon by Game 3 against a mid table Matavera side.

After the first two games we were now more accustomed to their style of play on Raro and very quickly found gaps in their defence and exploited their weaknesses. The game was a 11-0 win to us and was a nice way to bounce back from the Wednesday game. Rather than sit around on our last day we decided to embark on the cross island walk which turned into a bit of a hard out boot camp lasting all of four hours in the heat of the day with a reviving dip in the pool near Wigmores waterfall at the end. We all decided it had been a fantastic week and the locals were so welcoming and helpful. There were lots of happy memories and promises of wanting to do it all again next year. CIFA would be happy to host us again or any team from Western Springs who are prepared to put in the effort to do the fundraising. A thoroughly successful trip that will live long in the memories for the players and for the coach and staff.

9 GRADE TH

NERO

The 9th Grade Nero team capped off their fabulous season and tournament successes by coming Runners Up at the Three Kings United 15th Annual 9th Grade Invitational Tournament (The Nationals). The best club performance ever at this particular event! The boys went into the competition on strong form having won the Hibiscus Coast AFC and our own Western Springs AFC tournaments. However the Nationals are three days of long matches and tough competition and the team knew there were no easy rides. Day one of the pool matches were tough with two of the boys from the team of 10 down with a vomiting bug and unable to play. Down to 1 sub before the competition even started meant the eight remaining

14 December 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

RUNNERS UP AT THE NATIONALS boys able to play had to contribute harder. Another two of these boys had been sick earlier in the week so the team were just hoping to limp through day one unscathed. In true Nero form they managed to win all their matches beating Fencibles 1-0, Oratia 7-1 and Waimakariki 7-0 . Day 2 of the pool matches saw Nero with a tougher pool and some old foes. Nero started the day with one player back from illness and a draw with Forest Hill 1-1, this was followed by a win over Onehunga 3-1 and a strong finish to beat Central United 5-0. The efforts in the pool matches meant Nero finished 3rd overall after the preliminary rounds just behind Birkenhead Blazers and TKU. This meant Nero had to face off against eastern Suburbs in the quarter finals. Whilst a tentative and nervous start (and still with players recovering from illness) the boys

quickly found their grove and were soon playing a fantastic passing game – out skilling Eastern Suburbs all over the field. It was clear that the boys were hungry for the win. Fast on attack and relentlessly determined in defence the boys bought home a 2-0 win. Next was Ellerslie in the semi-finals - a team the boys had only ever beaten in penalty shoot outs. Neil Emblen who had been supporting the boys all the way through the tournament was on hand to provide some words of encouragement. It was a hard match with the weather turning wild and windy. Our clever coach Wayne Young strategically played against the wind in the first half which saw the match tied up 1-1 at half time. Both teams were playing great skilled football – our boys playing tough but fair and with great belief. The kids used the wind to their advantage in the second half

coming at Ellerslie with clever attack time and time again. The parents were beside themselves with nerves! Finally after many attempts on goal – Leo Young intercepted a kick out by the goalie which left him and the goalie 1 on 1, and Leo slotted in a text book strong shot on goal. Honestly the crowd went wild! The ball was kicked off again from the centre and the ref blew his whistle to end the game. A goal in the last 20 seconds of the game had put the kids in the final of the nationals. We felt like we had already won the FA Cup! The final was a match up against the home team TKU. Excitement levels were high and the kids started strong and looked confident and more than capable against TKU.

Nero’s break in the game came early on when Joe delivered a fantastic cross which flew across the face of goal and Bruno Noonan came streaming in for a strong volley and smacked the ball into the goal. TKU quickly countered with a long kick which caught the benefit of the wind and just sailed over our goalies finger tips. A couple of “interesting and missed calls” from the linesman had Springs parents on the edge of their seats as the boys defended well against free kicks. Finally an unlucky handball gave TKU a penalty which ended up winning the game for them 2-1. All parents, coaches and supporters were really proud of the achievements of this young group of boys who had played 3 days of fantastic football and were very gracious

in defeat. It is rare to see such a group of talented and determined young boys fight so hard for each other and their coach as they played through the tournament. It really is a credit to all the coaching staff, parents and most of all their team coach Wayne Young. Also awesome to see Joe Wallis recognised as the best goal keeper in the competition. Congratulations to: Joe Berman, Max Beullens, Justin Chan, Matthew Cunnington, Toby Duff, Will McKee, Bruno Noonan, Will Smith, Joe Wallis, Leo Young and coach Wayne Young. GO NERO! Can’t wait to see what next year brings!
