The club is in the process of installing new turf rules signs around the pitch to further help protect our fields. We would just ask that anyone intending to go onto the fields to play or coach consider their footwear before coming down to the club and
only go onto the fields with the correct boots. Members of the Executive Committee are working hard producing a new tiered sponsorship structure aimed at securing the club long-term support from all levels of the community and
businesses alike. The club needs continued support and funding if it is to continue to grow and progress—not only on the field, but with its facilities, such as improving the kitchen or clubroom facilities in general. Executive Committee

CLUB PHYSIO INJURIES TO JOINTS causes damage to the bone under the cartilage after injury.
In this edition I would like to discuss some potential outcomes of injuries to joints. Injury to a joint is the third most common cause of arthritis (after aging and obesity). Arthritis can be painful and debilitating and, in severe causes, can necessitate total joint replacement surgery. Injury related arthritis is often due to damage to the hyaline cartilage which is the protective covering on the end of the bone (think about the hyaline cartilage as white icing and the bone as cake. The hyaline cartilage provides a low friction surface on top of the bone. It is white because it doesn’t have a good blood supply and so often heals poorly. This results in a reduced ability to tolerate compression and shear forces, and ultimately

Signs of damage to the cartilage can be persistent swelling on a joint, pain with weight bearing, and aching at night or in compressed positions. To ensure your joint injury heals properly it is vital to engage in a comprehensive rehabilitation programme, and rest enough to allow the joint to heal. Nonimpact cardiovascular training, such as cycling or swimming can give the weight bearing part of the joint more time to heal, and encourage the flow of nutrients that the cartilage needs to repair. If you suspect you may have arthritis in a joint, or if you are struggling to overcome an injury come to the clinic and get
it checked out by one of our physio’s and let’s get you back to your feet! BTYF physio would also like to welcome aboard Katie Goulding who will be working on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Katie is a quality football physio and a keen football referee too. PLAYING OUR “A GAME” In the past few weeks we have been lucky enough to have lots of A grade visitors to Western Springs. Following on from the All Whites using it as a practise ground prior to their South Africa game in late May, there was great excitement on pitch last Saturday as six of the Wellington Phoenix players came to help out at the club. The players including Jason Hicks, Reece Caira, Manny Muscat, Roy Krishna, Albert Riera Vidal and newly signed Spanish midfielder Alejandro Gorrin took over from some of the coaches at Western Springs to train with the junior teams. With over 300 juniors playing on a Saturday morning, the grounds were packed and the players loving it as they showed off their skills to these heroes of NZ football. We were very lucky to be able to give our members an opportunity like this and thank the team at Wellington Phoenix for helping make this happen. The Wellington Phoenix team were up in Auckland in advance of The
Football United Tour which sees them competing against English Premier League (EPL) teams Newcastle United and West Ham United. Wellington Phoenix who are NZ’s only professional team compete in the Hyundai A-League
With 25,000 spectators anticipated to attend the Auckland match there are still tickets available for Eden Park. It may not be the world cup but it will certainly be world class football. This is a great chance to see NZ’s leading franchise take on one of the Premier League teams West Ham who will have four of their players joining them fresh from their efforts at the World Cup so make sure you get your tickets and don’t miss out.

RENEGADES SNEAK SHIELD The two 10th Grade Premier teams, the Thunder and the Renegades, headed south down the motorway to Mountfort Park to compete in the Clendon 10th Grade Tournament on Sunday 10 June 2014. Images by Ange Southgate
The Renegades, although a little rusty in the first half of their first pool game against the Bay Olympic Lions, started putting their passing game together well and came away with a 2-1 win, both goals down to some slick finishing by Rio Irvan. A great start to the tournament and a score that would be crucial to their placing later on in the day.
The third and final pool match was against one of the premier team’s biggest rivals from last year, Three Kings Clarke (who are playing 11th grade premier this season). The Renegades put together some great passing and team work and the game ended with a 1-1 draw with a great goal to Cam Southgate on the end of some well-constructed teamwork. It was a great game and good result. Winning the pool sent the Renegades through to the Championship semi-final where they met Eastern Suburbs Lillywhites. The Renegades fought hard against the Lillywhites, getting more shots away, and putting them under more pressure, but unfortunately ended up with a 1-0 loss. Eastern Suburbs Lillywhites ended up meeting Three Kings Clarke in the Championship Final with Eastern Suburbs taking out the title with a 1-0 win The loss to Eastern Suburbs sent the Renegades into the Shield semi-final where they met Three Kings Jones. We played well and managed to come away with a 1-0 win, with a goal to Miles Ellis.
Bruno Defending (eyes on the ball)
The Renegades’ second game, against Oratia United Victory was one the Renegades should have won. We dominated the game but could not manage to score a goal in the smaller than normal goals and we ended with a 0-0 draw.
Thunder nervously watching penalties 12 July 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz
The win against Three Kings Jones sent the Renegades into the Shield final. The question that remained was who the Renegades would meet in the final of the Shield. The Renegades knew that their squad mates, the Thunder, had had a similar run through pool play and finished second in their pool. They had also been playing good football but struggling to score in the smaller goals. The Thunder unfortunately lost at the same stage in the Championship round before beating Ellerslie Red 1-0 to set up an unwelcome, but gripping final match up... WSAFC Thunder vs. WSAFC Renegades.
The first official match between the two 10th Grade Premier teams this season (one thing was certain, Western Springs had won the Shield)!
Cam attacking down the wing
It was a testament to how even the two premier teams are that the final went through normal time and golden goal time with neither team scoring against the other, but both teams fighting hard all the way. In fact both teams probably played their best games of the Tournament. The boys always seem to get up and play hard against their squad mates. No result after normal and extra time meant the game would be decided on penalties—the first time either team had had to go through this process. The five representatives from each team were chosen and the goal keepers prepared—with the winners sneaking home by one penalty—WSAFC Renegades! A great result after a long long day.

TEAM FUNDRAIS ER White Stripes end of season trip to Rarotonga This year we thought what better way to celebrate another great season than heading off to sunny Rarotonga to play three matches against invitation sides including an Island U20’s Womens Selection Squad. The White Stripes travelling group including Coach, Manager and parents will fly out on 30th September and return on 7th October. This football exchange will be the first ever held in Rarotonga between WSAFC and Cook Island teams and may pave the way for future visits between the two clubs. The accommodation will be provided by CIFA, and is situated at the facility in Matavera complete with dormitory sleeping, cooking, laundry and shared bathroom facilities, as well as meeting and conference rooms and two great full size fields with grandstand viewing.
Our fundraising so far has consisted of a BBQ every Saturday morning as well as raffles and sale of pot plants. So if you have supported us already by buying a gourmet free range Neat Meat sausage on a bun with cos lettuce and chutney, then we thank you. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure please keep an eye out for us this Saturday and know that your money will be helping us to represent the Green and White of Western Springs in sun-drenched Rarotonga this October. www.wsafc.org.nz July 2014 13

7 AND 8 GRADE TRIALS TH
TH
I know that most readers had their eyes fixed firmly on Brazil and the various countries as they prepared for the start of their World Cup campaigns but for the 7th and 8th Grade players at Springs there was an even more compelling fixture on the calendar. The trials for the development squads. These were both held in June on consecutive Sundays and there was an enormous turnout for what would end up being only 20 available spots per grade. Almost 60 players turned up for the 8th Grade trial in their full playing kit to be assessed by Director of Football Neil Emblen, Football
16 July 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz
Development Officer Geoff Brogan and a group of experienced and independent assessors. Each player was put through their paces in passing drills and then divided up into 5-a-side teams to play off against each other. All under the watchful eye of the assessors. After about an hour they had seen enough and it was wrapped up and everyone had given a full and robust account of themselves and done their best to impress. It should be said that the standard for this grade was very high and the future for this squad is already looking bright with the level of technical
ability across the top 8-10 players showing a lot of promise. The 7th Grade was in much the same situation with almost the same number attending and the same high standard of football on display. Both of the grade teams have already played games on a Sunday in the 9th and 10th Grade IN house leagues and the top teams (Vitesse and Pequenos) have yet to lose a game so they will be able to continue to be appropriately challenged as they start to get used to playing more as a unit and perhaps even go up a division.
