20 HACKETT STREET, ST MARYS BAY www.bayleys.co.nz/1670052 Auction 2pm, 4 June 2014 (unless sold prior) 4 Viaduct Harbour Ave, Auckland
REINZ Sales statistic show that sales volumes in April 2014 in the Auckland Region fell by 21% compared to April 2013 with Auckland City seeing the largest fall of 24.5%. While the wider market has experienced this fluctuation, the appeal of Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Herne Bay, St Marys Bay, Freemans Bay and Westmere has been maintained. This is highlighted by the REINZ statistics which show a fairly consistent number of sales when comparing April 2014 to April 2013. REINZ recorded 55 sales across the 6 suburbs in April 2014 with 56 in April 2013. 29, just over half of these sales, are in the $1m - $2m bracket. If you are considering selling call us or stop by our office for a chat. We’d love to talk.

FROM THE COMMITTEE We are well into the season and with our new grounds have not had one cancellation. It was only a couple of years ago that we were coping with the grass pitches and it was very hit and miss on whether we were able to train and play on Saturdays, this resulted in a lot of tears as kids (and maybe the adults) were told that the games were off... glad we have put that behind us. To add to the good news the number of club members in the Junior and Youth area continues to rise, especially in the younger grades with 5th–7th grades busting out of the grounds on a Saturday morning. It is fantastic to see the enthusiasm in the game and the support we have in the local community, all this bodes well for the club in the future. We need to be aware that with increased numbers comes increased administration and it has been challenging with the change of strip and field allocations at the start of
WELCOME CLUB MEMBERS! the season. We appreciate your patience with these changes. In looking at how we are performing through the grading process which has just finished, it is great to see strong performances in a number of grades across both boys and girls teams. Hopefully we can see those teams carry their form into the championship rounds and we will make sure we keep track of performance through the season. As you will see from Neil’s article on page 14, the First Team continues to perform strongly, so please continue to support our First Team as the football is great to watch and everyone is welcome to come down, have a bite to eat and enjoy the atmosphere. One of the issues that we need to make you aware of again are the turf rules. These have been added to this newsletter (page 24). The Council and the club have put a considerable amount of funds, time and effort into the installation of the pitches and we all need to follow the guidelines. What this means is,

NO FLAT SOLED SHOES (this includes running shoes and trainers) and NO BAREFEET, as these will compress the grass over time, and this is already apparent in some goal areas. What you can wear are moulded boots and turf shoes. If you don’t have any, Paul Rutland the Club Manager has a stock of these for adults to buy at a reduced rate or you can buy them at most sports shops. Also only coaches and managers on the fields, and only water, NO food or coloured or flavoured drinks. We will be getting tougher on enforcing these requirements moving forward, so please don’t take offence if you are asked to leave the fields due to the wrong footwear or carrying cups of coffee onto the grounds. Looking forward to seeing how all the teams progress through the season, I hope everyone is out there supporting their team mates, catching a bit of the World Cup and enjoying the sport. CLUB PHYSIO WHO WOULD WANT TO BE A KEEPER? Seriously, everybody knows it takes a certain type of person to be able to put their body on the line week in, week out and enjoy it. They need to be agile, strong, co-ordinated, brave... and a little bit crazy! Surprisingly, research suggests that keepers get injured around 25% less frequently than outfielders, however they are more likely to suffer from injuries to the upper limb (Junge, 2001). Professional goalkeepers tend to have fewer total injuries (and also fewer training injuries) than outfielders. Adductor strains are common injuries for keepers, along with overuse, hip and groin injuries. (Cristiano et al., 2014) Perhaps not surprisingly, the higher
the standard of play, the higher the incidence of injuries, due to the intensity of the training and games. Suggestions to prevent injury for goalkeepers include consistently doing the the FIFA 11+ strengthening and co-ordination exercises, to train and play in shin guards, and to wear mouth guards and genital protectors. Exercises focusing on scapulae stability, your core and strength of the rotator cuff can help to reduce the incidence of rotator cuff injuries and can be done using either a theraband or cables in the gym. For a list of ‘Quirky Goalkeeper injuries’ I encourage you to check out this true list of goalkeeper injuries. http://goalkeepersaredifferent.com/keeper/injuryframe.htm

KEEPING IT REAL! The goalkeeper or more affectionately known as the “keeper” is a very specialized position with a completely different set of skills than is otherwise used in football. The modern keeper is expected to be able to be as good with his feet as an outfield player but also meant to be able to stop every shot and catch every cross with the same amount of training as an outfield player and a lot of the time with no specific goalkeeper training. A lot of the time, if a team is lucky enough to have more than one GK they will get sent away from the rest of the team and told to train themselves with no coach, so with all this, we can establish the keeper is meant to be as good as two players with no extra coaching and no coach to help them.
them if they see an error because ‘they are just the keeper... who cares if they can’t pass or control a ball in midfield’. If you think about that is the best way to teach a keeper to deal with a back pass and play out safely from the back or they get stuck in a goal while everyone else plays in front of them and takes shots under no pressure which in all honesty doesn’t help either party as the session does not look or feel like a game of football.
as just another player and help them improve as you move on and want to progress your session don’t just chuck the keeper in a goal. See if you can involve them with your session someway and get them moving about while still using their hands.
Now for a keeper to get any specific GK training they are always told to look elsewhere or that there is no one around who can help them, and this for a lot of young keepers is how they end up either hurting themselves or start to dislike the position because they can’t learn anything new to improve while the rest of the team continues to get better in front of them.
Anyway that’s my two cents but am always willing to talk more about this or help out with any coaches wanting to know how to intergrate the goalkeeper into a session better.
If a team only has one keeper they generally get to join in with the rest of the team as an outfield player which is not a bad thing at all, but the coach generally doesn’t coach
So how do we as coaches, change this and help our goalkeeper? I would recommend involving your keeper in training more. The more touches of a ball for all players the better. Involve them in the warm up

On the other side, if they want to look for specific GK training at WSAFC we have an embarrassment of riches for goalkeeping coaches and all want to help at every level.
Keepers, away!!!

TEAM PROFILE - MALAGA 11th Grade Girls Division 2 Where did your team name come from? We were Malaga last season, a name assigned by the club. Malaga is a Spanish football team, but one of our Mums says malaga means a “journey” or “voyage” in Samoan, so we like both the footballing reference and the Pasifika one too. What are your hopes this season as a team? We have three players who have never played football before and one in her second season, in a team of ten players. We play to have fun and to learn soccer skills to impress our supporters. But we also respect our opponents while trying our hardest to win every game. How has the season started? We’ve had five grading games, winning one. But last week we were the first team to score a goal against the top team in the division. And one of our first-time footballers has already scored her first ever goal. Our training sessions are great and all the players listen well and put a lot of effort into becoming better footballers.
Back: Leilani Ginnen (with arm raised), Hazel Burgess, Hinewai Kahukiwa, Sophie Grimes (holding trophy), Hinewai’s brother Johnny Middle: Lottie Popplewell, Maxie de Man (blue/grey jacket), Kristina Miles (black jacket), Emily Blamires, Orla Porten Front: Charlotte Mitchell
Coach: Neil Porten
What shape do you normally play? Last week at training the players had a discussion about formations and player positions. We have been playing 2-3-1 (7-a-side) but the players think a “double diamond” 2-1-2-1 might best suit our strengths. So we’ll be trying it out in our next match. Captain’s name and position? We haven’t nominated a captain. All our players get to play in all the positions on the field. Each week two players play a half each in goal, playing the rest of the game as outfield players. Where do you hope to finish this season? We hope to finish the season with all the players so happy they can’t wait to come back and play again next season! And the season after that. And the season after that …

WSAFC MEN’S FIRST TEAM NRFL DIV 1
During the off season we were lucky enough to attract a raft of new players to add to the Championship winning squad of 2013. These included Patch Bowen and Niall Rankin from Oratia United, Jono Quinn from Eastern Suburbs, Scott Midgley, Sam Brotherton and Ross McPhie from Central United, Sheldon Pillay and Roussin Nkoy from Birkenhead United. More recently Adam Dickinson has bolstered the attacking stocks and has already scored eight goals in eight games since joining from Summer Franchise club Auckland City. POS
It gives me great confidence that the strength and unity of the squad is so positive. We have had a very good start to the season and almost everybody has had the opportunity to play a part. James Debenham has unfortunately been ruled out of the whole season due to a persistent knee injury sustained in July last year. I am hoping we will be in the Premier League by the time James returns next season. The Reserve team are also in a very good position to push for the championship being just six points

With a younger crop of players the first half of the season has been a learning experience for them, but now with the strength of a bulked up First Team squad the knock on effect to the Reserves will see some strong performers dropping into that grade each week. 9 GRADE NERO TH
9th Grade Premier Team Western Springs Nero take the honours at the Eastern Suburbs tournament. Images by Francine Cameron (except team photo)
It is the 9th grade premier team’s first year in the AFF and the teams are on a high learning and fast improvement curve. At the Eastern Suburbs tournament on 11 May, WS Nero proved how far they have already come by taking out the Championship Cup at the tournament. The team got off to a flying start by beating Forest Hill 7-0 in their first pool match. Maxi Beullens was on fire with a five goal haul in the first game shooting from left wing, right wing and sneaking a couple from the far post
able to break through with a skilful goal, with Onehunga only matching the goal late in the second half to tie 1-1. Finishing second in their pool play saw the team move into the Championship rounds only to face Eastern Suburbs Lilywhites in the quarter finals who had also beaten the team in their AFF round matches a couple of weeks prior. The competition was close and the team pulled out a 2-1 victory. Maxi Beullens got the team off to a flying start making a break out on the right wing and sailing a ball into the top left hand corner of the goal. Eastern Suburbs matched the goal but Joe Berman used his blistering pace to create an opportunity to score his third goal for the tournament. Our awesome defenders Toby Duff, Justin Chan, Henry Avery and Kalan Hanks-Papalli stayed strong and determined and gave their all to ensure the team hung onto their lead to make it to the semi-finals where we met Fencibles. The semi-finals were all about the defence for both teams. Kalan Hanks-Papalli lead our charge on determination as he con-
second shooter from each team it was still nil all. Joe Wallis stepped out of goal to take his penalty and slammed through a great strike to put Nero up 1-0. Fencibles then equalled with their last shooter. Our last shooter was Maxi Beullens who slotted his penalty into the bottom right hand corner to put Nero up 2-1 and into the grand final against Birkenhead Blazers. The kids were looking exhausted giving everything they had to the previous games—everyone was running out of steam but not our awesome defence of Toby Duff,

Maxi Beullens on the sprint from great crosses from Toby Duff and Henry Avery. Joe Wallis also scored two strength goals, powering shots into goal assisted by Will Smith and Joe Berman. The team had a spring in their step but most importantly has listened well to their coach Wayne Young keeping their shape, passing well and applying great pressure. Their second pool game they tied 2-2 against Eastern Suburbs Black a well fought clash with neither team giving an inch. Joe Berman delivered two great goals from breaks up the wing and Joe Wallis scored another two strong goals assisted by Will Smith and Maxi Beullens. The game also saw very strong defence from Justin Chan and Henry Avery who never gave the opposition space. The third pool match saw the team playing Onehunga Sports who had beaten the kids in their first round AFF match 10-3. The kids kept the game tight through relentless chase and defence by Justin Chan, Leo Young and Toby Duff. Finally Will Smith was

tinually stopped the surging of the Fencibles attack, along with Toby Duff and Justin Chan who ran their hearts out and tackled hard. Key strength in midfield by Henry Avery and Leo Young enabled Nero to be constantly pressuring and attacking the ball. Again the boys kept their shape, gave great pressure and passed the ball well—everything their coach asked from them. Full time saw a nil all draw, so the result was to be decided by a penalty shoot out from four kids from each team on the field. It was a tight contest some close misses and some great saves by our keeper Joe Wallis. After the
Justin Chan and Kalan Hanks-Papalli who were miraculous and tenacious to the end. Adding to that the fight of Henry Avery and Leo Young in the mid field to support our gallant yet tiring attackers, Maxi Beullens, Joe Wallis, Will Smith and Joe Berman. The kids (superbly lead by their coach Wayne Young) worked as a strong team, passing, tackling, never giving up to give themselves and their fabulous coach a 2-1 victory in the grand final. Joe Wallis and Will Smith delivering the goals for the team to bring home the silverware and the best mother’s day ever! Thanks to all the coaches and players of the other Western Springs teams at the tournament who stuck around to cheer the boys on through the finals—they really appreciated the support and great club spirit!

WOMEN’S PREMIER TEAM RISE UP With the late appointment of a new coach and the even later announcement that Western Springs had been offered another chance at remaining in the NRFL Women’s Premier League for 2014, there was a nervous excitement as we lined up for our first game of the season in April. But there is a great atmosphere with this year’s squad which includes the U17’s, the Reserves and the Prems. We train together as one big squad and there is a keen interest from everyone in how each team fares come game day. With the addition of some key newcomers we have a markedly stronger side than we have had for some years. With Penny Chapman and Sally Bowden returning after long absences from Springs and a healthy injection of
talent and energy from newbies Therese Saito, Abby Roper GK (Fencibles), Bethany Weller (Claudelands) and Sarah Blyde (Fencibles), we are blessed with skill and football savvy. We also have the speed, skill and determination of U17 players Annabelle Webster, Ruby Johnson and Georgia Paterson to add into the mix. It’s an exciting time and the team is building for next year and beyond with a passion. There is a strong team bond. We train hard and then gather together post training on Wednesdays to discuss tactics for the weekend and to break bread together. Our results so far have shown that we are able to compete even with the strongest teams in the table and our
hope is that we will be able to push some teams and maybe even pinch three points when they are least expecting it. We have definitely improved every game and have come such a long way as a team since our first game against Three Kings which was a 5-0 loss. Our first win was against Bay of Plenty and we look forward to seeing them again but this time at our home fortress that is Seddon Fields. We hope to be able to finish the season strongly with a few more wins under our belt and definitely to try to finish higher up the table than last years placing.
