Giltrap Nissan has joined forces with Western Springs AFC. WSAFC Director of Football and Men’s First Team Coach, Neil Emblen, will be driving the NP300 Nissan Navara ST Model which was voted ‘The European Ute of the Year’ for 2016. Nissan Japan has a strong football association as it a major sponsor with the Champions League, also Manchester City FC and Melbourne City in the Australian A League. What an absolutely cracking finale to the Men’s First Team season. Saturday 2 September, at home to Hibiscus Coast, a win and Neil’s lads would be crowned NRFL Division 1 Champions for the second time in three years and promoted back to the Premier League. And win they eventually did after a decent battle with a spirited opponent who wasn’t going to roll over. Had they not read the script? Anyway, a perfect start to a great afternoon of celebrations and a long evening and late night for some.

members, fantastic Life Members and wonderful sponsors. The VIPS and special guests certainly looked like they were being very well fed and watered in the roped off area, some more well fed than others. Tracy Cunnington had obviously worked her organisational magic again and arranged some delicious catering. It was great to see so many of our community enjoying themselves particularly those businesses and individuals that support our club. A big thank you to all of them and I encourage you to support them back.

The day didn’t start well with heavy rain causing flooding to the Main Pitch and causing lots of pacing and headaches for Mr Rutland – something Auckland Council and their Drainage Engineers are working to solve. However, a few reshuffles and an easing in the weather allowed both the Reserves and First Team games to kick off and avoid an embarrassing call to AFF.

The day was capped off with the presentation of a beaut new ute from Giltrap Nissan. Unfortunately, someone decided that Neil and not me should get the keys, and so I was left to cycle home on my electric bike with a full belly and wonderful memories of a great day.

The day was also a celebration for all of the club’s hard working committee

Like guessing quite a few of you have suffered in everything though practice makes perfect. the past. Poor balance on landing has also

So this means it is really important as an athlete or anyone in fact, to work on improving your balance. For a minute, I want you to choose a leg and stand just on that leg. Most people will find the arch of their foot tends to drop in, the knee rolls into the centre and they lock the knee back (called hyper-extension). This is largely due to the fact that we tend to be a lot stronger at the front and inside muscles of our body rather than the outside and back stabilising muscles of our system. Also our true balance tends to be poor so we lock in our knee to stabilise the leg. If you are standing as above, sadly you are not standing on one leg very effectively and if you are pushed, knocked or tackled in this position you are still likely to be at some risk of injury. Instead go back on to that one leg, bend

Once you have mastered the position above and can hold it for one minute for maybe three attempts withput the knee and foot collapsing in, try some of these challenges to test your balance: Close your eyes whilst trying to balance, stand on an unstable surface (couple of cushions) or start adding in jumping and landing on one-foot. Look at progressing even further: hopping and landing on one foot in multiple directions, or landing on an uneven surface. See pics below for some ideas to push yourself to the next level. Ok what you are doing right now is a neuromuscular-functional conditioning program (fancy). What that actually means is you are performing a type of injury prevention program. Kindly, in football they have developed some of these for you, such as the scientifically tested prevention program FIFA 11+. FIFA 11+ will soon be a part of all your team warm-ups and has elements of the above; bounding, landing and balance. We will be giving you more details on FIFA 11+ in the future, so watch this space.

P18 Tony Readings’ Football Ferns are currently in America playing two matches against the World’s number one ranked team, the US. For three of the current Ferns the journey began back at Seddon Fields playing the green and white. Rosie White, Daisy Cleverley and Lizzie Anton have fond memories of their time at Springs where they dreamed of one day being given the chance to represent their country and play at the highest level.

SO, THE REAL QUESTION IS. HOW GOOD IS YOUR BALANCE? PROUD TO BE PHYSIOTHERAPIST OF CHOICE FOR Hey team, WESTERN SPRINGS AFC the knee slightly and try to shift your weight I’m Suzie Belcher from Back To Your Feet

been linked to increased risk of serious knee injury in sports. In most games including soccer/football (I am English after all), you will spend most of your time transferring from one foot to the other. In other words, you will mainly spend your game time on one foot.

12 September 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

We catch up with roomie’s Daisy and Lizzie in Camp Cincinatti as they prepare for their second match and ask them what made the difference and helped them to become the footballers thay are today. When did you first start playing? Lizzie: My first season at Springs when I was eight was the first time I started playing, my sister and dad played at springs so I just went to give it a go. Daisy: I first started when I was five years old. What was your first team at springs? Lizzie: My first team was the 8th grade Western Springs Rangers (2006) Daisy: My first team was called Puriri coached by my dad. Can you name your other teams? Lizzie: Bella Donnas (11th grade, 2008), Leopards (12th grade, 2009), then from 2010 played in the White Stripes for multiple years. After I finished playing with the White Stripes, I moved clubs to play senior football. Daisy: Played in Premier League with boys in team Joga Bonito where we won the league three years (pretty sure). I then moved to playing with girls at 14 years, still coached by my dad as well as Geoff Brogan. Team name was White Stripes. At 16 this is when I moved into the Premier League and transferred clubs.

The crazily successful WSAFC Go Feet season is finally at an end. We needed all three points on Friday night 22 September against the Bay Olympic Clowns to collect the league winners medals that sit nicely next to the Over 30’s Knockout Cup Winners medals. We aimed for the double at the start of the season and the journey was full of trials and tribulations but we got there in the end. Over 30’s football is not for the fainthearted. Along the way we had injuries of every description including concussions, collapsed lungs, broken ribs, strangulation’s and bruised genitals. To play 20 games and only suffer one loss and one draw is a pretty good effort scoring 113 goals along the way. We got to know our opposition quite well, possibly too well as the 1st division was reduced to only four teams playing three rounds, we were on first name basis with all of them. I’m missing them already but not as much as I’ll miss the Go Feet crew every Saturday. Communication was excellent and we had a full team 18 September 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

almost every week. The passing and possession brand of football we play is a hell of a lot of fun and lethally effective. The banter and the beers after each game is priceless. Football for me is like therapy. All your problems disappear for a full 90 minutes of your life, when the only thing you think about is chasing a leather ball around a cold wet paddock. And I can confidently say I am a better person after a seasons therapy with Go Feet. Congratulations to Player of the Year and golden boot Darryn Lochead who scored a lot of crucial goals and generally just tore opposition defenses apart. And Sportsman David Burton, consistently good ball winner and distributor who manages to win all the headers, despite being the shortest guy on the pitch. Fully deserved but everyone made big contributions and fought hard all season. Oh and thanks for the lending of the sign Neil Emblen! We fudged it!

WESTERN SPRINGS NRFL WOMEN’S PREMIER RESERVES TEAM

SEASON REVIEW New season; new coach, new players, new approach. The foundations had been set for a potentially successful and entertaining season for the Women’s Reserve Team with a fantastic core of talented young girls plus a couple more “experienced” players front and back. Entertaining is exactly how the season started, and hosting Three Kings at home on the opening weekend was always going to be a tough test of our pre-season preparations. Reflecting something more accustomed to Madison Square Gardens than Seddon Fields, the two teams traded goal after goal, both sides asking questions of the oppositions defensive qualities. A late Three Kings goal sealed the game with them taking all three points and leaving the game one goal shy of double figures (Springs 4–5 Kings). The disappointment for everyone involved was evident, however, some calm reassuring words from Coach of the Year Ian Heath meant that would be the last time the team walked off of the field feeling that way. 13 league games later; 12 wins, one draw, 60 goals scored, 18 conceded. Whilst there was no Vardy Party to watch the action unfold, confirmation of League Champions did come in the same manner as the Foxes championship title, without a ball being kicked. Claudelands defeat by Forrest Hill at home meant mathematically the maximum number of points they could achieve was 12 short of the maximum Springs would eventually go on to earn. Despite an 86% win record and impressive goal difference, it wasn’t all plain sailing. The girls had to come from behind more times than the coaches would have liked, however, to not only do that, but then go on to win those games, shows how much belief and character there was within the squad, especially with so many fresh young faces around. Quite simply, the team just didn’t know they were beat. These qualities were also what saw them emulate the achievement of a select number of great sides; The Double!

The NRFL Women’s Premier Reserve Cup is essentially a knock out round of the Women’s Premier Reserve league, with the same eight teams given the opportunity to pick up additional silverware.

Round 1 saw a repeat of round 1 in the league with the return of Three Kings to Seddon Field. The result however, was not to be repeated, with the Springs girls putting on one of the best displays of football by any senior team this year to romp home 4–0 winners. Round 2 threw up another mental test for the girls. Having an away league game scheduled against them the following week, it was a trip the mighty Waikato to face Claudelands Rovers. Despite being pushed hard and playing easily some of the worst football of their season, they proved they could still do it on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Hamilton and came away with a convincing 4–2 win. The trip back make more enjoyable as they were entertained by the musical talents of up and coming duo BB and Margot. Meanwhile, the decision on who would face Springs in the final was being decided over at Madill’s Farm where the old foe’s Eastern Surburbs took on the Swans of the Shore in Forrest Hill. The Lilywhites ran out eventual winners (4–3). Anticipation grew over the coming weeks as the girls waited with baited breath to see when the final would be played. Any date would suit, as they knew they were ready. Thursday 14 September, 7:30pm, Seddon Fields. That date, time and place will probably be forever engrained on those that attended that night as what ensued was probably the weirdest night of football since Barbados and Granada (1994 Caribbean Cup Qualification). As expected by two of the best teams in the competition, the game was competitive and a

SO, THE REAL QUESTION IS. HOW GOOD IS YOUR BALANCE? PROUD TO BE PHYSIOTHERAPIST OF CHOICE FOR Hey team, WESTERN SPRINGS AFC I’m Suzie Belcher from Back To Your Feet the knee slightly and try to shift your weight ACC & Private provider • Education • Prevention • Treatment • Rehabilitation

Physio and today I would like to talk to you into the heel and outside of your foot, whilst Contact Justin on 021 673 732 www.backtoyourfeet.health.nz about balance and its importance your safety keeping your Pavilion, back up tall and straight. You Clinic isto located upstairs at Western Springs Seddon Fields, 108 Meola Rd on the field and ability to perform better. should feel some squeeze in the buttock on the outside of your hip, and down your leg to the There is plenty of research out in the sports outside of your calf and ankle. Don’t worry if science and medicine world that shows poor you are finding this quite hard, everyone does balance, is a risk factor in injuries. The biggest when they start (including at times Olympic injury being the good old ankle sprain (which or world rate athletes), we are poor at using has a high incidence of re-injury), and I am these muscles and they fatigue fast at first. Like guessing quite a few of you have suffered in everything though practice makes perfect. the past. Poor balance on landing has also been linked to increased risk of serious knee injury in sports. In most games including soccer/football (I am English after all), you will spend most of your time transferring from one foot to the other. In other words, you will mainly spend your game time on one foot. Instead go back on to that one leg, bend 14 September 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

So what can Back To Your Feet do? Well we can help you develop your own home or warm-up balance program to help reduce your risk of injury and improve your performance. We can suggest and get you useful home equipment (etc wobble cushion), that can be used to improve the effectiveness of you balance program. We can advise and educate you on your technique. The take away message here is: balance is key to helping performance and reducing injury risk, it is easy to train at home and you don’t need much to get effective results. So get balancing.

Tony Readings’ Football Ferns are currently in America playing two matches against the World’s number one ranked team, the US. For three of the current Ferns the journey began back at Seddon Fields playing the green and white. Rosie White, Daisy Cleverley and Lizzie Anton have fond memories of their time at Springs where they dreamed of one day being given the chance to represent their country and play at the highest level. At 16 this is when I moved into the Premier League and transferred clubs.

it. Couldn’t get away from the ball. Intermediate I played my first year then slowly stopped as my football load out of school started to increase. During your development how many days a week did you engage in formal football activity? Lizzie: Growing up I had two club trainings, a club game and then training academy on Sunday. This then progressed into more trainings per week as I got involved with AFF and later on NZF.

Did you play in boys teams during your development? Do you think this helped you is so why?

Daisy: To begin with, I was only training two times a week plus a game and as Auckland and New Zealand football commitments began, my loadings increased, to around five times a week including game.

Lizzie: I didn’t play in any boys teams, only one mixed team in 8th grade.

Any other things that you think helped you to become the player you are today?

Daisy: Playing with boys throughout my youth was one of the most important factors to helping me develop as a player. I was always tested technically as well as the speed of my play. The teams were always very good passes, which has helped me now in the way I play.

Lizzie: I think my dad has helped me a lot as he has always encouraged me and has been honest with my performance, he also has always been up for having a kick around if I wanted one. Another person that has helped me to become the player I am today is George Vale, he has coached me on and off over the years ever since I started going to his academy when I was about 10 years old.

What do you put your love for football down to? Lizzie: Probably my parents because they provided me with the support to get involved and take all the opportunities I was offered when I was developing (e.g. Paying for extra training programmes, NTC’s, transport.). When I was younger I was involved with many other sports such as netball, swimming and tennis but didn’t love any of them like I did with football. Daisy: I love the social aspect of football, being able to play the game you love with your best friends makes it that much better. When I was younger I always wanted to prove people wrong that girls weren’t good at sports so my love for the game also stemmed from this as I always wanted to be the best and beat the boys.

Daisy: I think my dad particularly has played an important role in helping me become the player I am today. Always going down to the field with me to do kicks, teaching me new tricks etc. He was my coach all throughout my time at Springs, and he is the one who has taught me a lot of what I know today. Even to this day I get essay long reports of how I can improve my game. He was a great player himself when he was young and constantly watches football so I definitely trust his opinions and ideas.

Did you play during lunchtime at school? If yes how often? Lizzie: Yeah I played a bit at school, mainly just joining in with the boys if they were playing. Daisy: During primary I played football before school and during lunchtimes everyday. I loved We wish Rosie, Daisy and Lizzie all the best and look forward to Lizzie making her Ferns debut hopefully as this article goes to print. www.wsafc.org.nz September 2017 17

20 September 2017 www.wsafc.org.nz

As expected by two of the best teams in the competition, the game was competitive and a

pleasure to watch. The two traded blows with Springs taking the lead on 36 minutes after a wayward back pass didn’t have the legs to reach the keeper and Elaine ‘Titch’ Murray sped onto it, rounded the keeper and slotted home. Flora ‘Let’s Go Girls!’ McLeod almost double the lead five minutes from half time with a lofted shot across the keeper, only to see it fly wide. Some shaky Springs defence presented opportunities to Suburbs and the breakthrough finally came in the 60th minute with Hannah Pilley bringing the game level. Chances were there for both sides late into the second half with neither side able to apply the telling touch. The feeling around the ground that one simple mistake could give the opposition the advantage began to build. Then in the 86th minute, that simple mistake came when a Suburbs corner wasn’t cleared, and a fumble in the box resulted in Springs putting the ball into the back of their own net. 2–1 Suburbs.

atmosphere at Meola Road likened to that at Eden Park following the All Blacks and Lions final test match and players not know what emotions to feel.

Four minutes plus additional time left. Springs continued to knock at the door but Suburbs refused to answer. Step up Coach of the Year Ian Heath. With nothing to lose, a change was made to the formation with centre back/defensive midfielder Nicole ‘Fritz’ Lawrence put up front. The ball broke to Zoe Brown on the left wing. She chopped inside onto her right foot and put the ball back into the danger area. Two Suburbs defenders attempting to clear their lines, only managed to bounce it off of each other and the ball broke to Nicole’s feet. Appearing as though she was taking a stroll through the park on a sunny Sunday morning, she calmly and nonchalantly put the ball away. 2–2. 30 secs on the clock. Extra time!

Shania ‘Twain’ Heath

The equaliser appeared to take the wind out of Suburbs sails as just three minutes into extra time, Springs re-took the lead and two minutes later appeared to put the result beyond doubt when Sienna Foley Okana finished superbly after Zoe Brown’s long range effort came back off the crossbar. Six minutes 50 seconds into the second half of extra time and with Suburbs trying in vain to get back into the game, the metre finally ran out of 50ps and the pitch was plunged into darkness! Seemingly a slight miscalculation resulted in the floodlights turning off ahead of schedule and leaving everyone bewildered (and Paul regretting his ‘I’ve done my bit, now you do yours girls’ comment at the start of the game…). Once it was established there was not sufficient time for the lights to cool down, warm up and get re-started, the players and coaches from both teams were given an option. Let the result at the time stand (a win to Springs) or come back at a later date and play out the final eight minutes and 10 seconds. After much discussion, the latter was agreed. The

Whilst preparing for what would undoubtedly be the strangest game of football every played (or at least the shortest), word came through that Suburbs had not met the required deadline, and the result at the time the game was abandoned stood – Springs had won! Yet again, the girls had won without stepping onto the pitch. This has been a great season, not just for the number of wins and the trophies collected, but for the attitude shown on the pitch, the willingness to do what is asked and carry it out to an impressive level as well as the comradery between the girls. Here’s some of the seasons highlights from some of the team: “Great team environment. No ‘cliques’. More like sisters than team mates” “Being down 1–0 at Norwest and coming back to win 2–1 in the final 20 minutes” Annie ‘Not Lydon’ Byrne “Winning 3–2 away to Claudelands when 1–1 with 10 to go” Flora ‘Let’s Go Girls!’ McLeod “Scoring direct from a corner, and winning everything!” Zoe Brown “Being undefeated (personally – I didn’t play in the first game of the season) & winning everything!” Faye ‘Bus Stop’ Busfield “Scoring two goals in the Cup Final; the 92nd minute equaliser and the own goal” Nicole ‘Fritz’ Lawrence “The girls progressed through the season, each week improving on the last. You could see they enjoyed playing and through that came the results. They never knew they were beaten and the style of football they played with and the swag they had, meant everyone involved with the team only ever envisaged a win.” Ian ‘Coach of the Year’ Heath www.wsafc.org.nz September 2017 21

WSAFC EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS Severe weather storms and accidents happen and occasionally we have emergency situations at WSAFC and Seddon Fields. These protocols will keep you and your teams safe at Seddon Fields. Severe Weather

Be safe. Plan ahead

Lightning

“If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it.“

Earthquake

If in doubt, clear the fields. Severe weather may include tornados, hail storms, gale force winds or serious storms. Lightning is dangerous and has struck and killed footballers on the field. If you can hear thunder then the associated lightning are within auditory range… about 9.5-12.5km away. The distance from the origin of lightning to where it can strike can also be 9.5-12.5km. Please treat all thunder storms as serious. If you are inside, stay inside, stay where you are until the shaking stops. Drop to your knees. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect you from falling debris - if you are able to crawl for additional cover under sturdy desk or table. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and anything that could fall such as heaters and light fixtures. Hold on to sturdy covering so you can move with it until shaking stops.

Drop, cover, hold. During Trainings or Games

If possible move away from buildings, streetlights or utility wires. Stay clear of light towers and other tall structures. If the earthquake is ‘long and strong’ there is a risk of Tsunami. Evacuate to the safe Tsunami zone in the car parks by Western Springs High School.

Tsunami

If there is a long and strong earthquake, get uphill.

Seddon Fields is located with the Evacuation Zone for a medium sized Tsunami. Move immediately to the nearest higher ground. Know where the tsunami evacuation route goes – the safest place is toward the zoo or Western Springs College. During Trainings or Games Clear the field immediately and move to higher ground. Listen to local radio stations and do not return to the evacuation zone until given the all clear. During Trainings or Games • If there are others in the club, shout ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ and assist them out of building • Activate Fire Alarms

Fire

“Get Down, Get Low, Get out – Fast”

• ‘Get Down, Get Low, Get out - Fast.’ • If you can, close doors behind you to stop the fire spreading. • Once out, stay out – never go back inside. • Meet at the planned meeting place – in car park outside club • If you can’t get out of the club, close the door of the room you are in and put a towel under it to stop the smoke coming in. Go to the window and yell ‘FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!’ Wait to be rescued. • If there is a fire at Seddon Fields, Call 111 immediately

Further information and instructions will be in our clubhouse, on our website and on our App. Please take the time to read them incase of an emergency. www.wsafc.org.nz September 2017 25
