HANGING UP HIS SPURS‌ TONY BULLEN, HAVING FINALLY ADMITTED NOW REACHING RETIREMENT AGE, HAS RECENTLY STEPPED DOWN FROM THE SENIOR COMMITTEE AND AS CLUB CAPTAIN. However, the club would like to acknowledge all the hard work Tony has done for the club, much of it behind the scenes, helping make this club in to the fantastic venue it is today. His work often goes unnoticed, but there is rarely a day he is not down at the club coaching, playing, supporting, or on committee duties. On top of this, he has been a great ambassador for the club, playing front of house on match days, doing the after game announcements on the weekends and meeting and greeting home and away teams alike. Tony, the club thanks you for all of your hard work and dedicated commitment over the past years and despite hanging up your spurs, we look forward to still having you larger than life around the club and undoubtedly involved in many things.

FIREBOLTS WINNERS Images by Rachel Thomas

The 11th Grade Firebolts 2014 season started with plenty of enthusiasm and optimism having finished the 2013 season winning the 10th Nationals Tournament. But this year would be different with us being the team that everyone wanted to beat and measure themselves against. We welcomed four new players to the team and set about a rigorous preseason build up, consisting of preseason games, tournaments and learning to play a new system having moved from seven to nine a side with more space on a bigger field. And there would be a few bumps along the way with more learning experiences after conceding a couple of losses in grading (one being a reverse result of the Nationals final win against

Eastern Suburbs) and finishing third. Into the Championship round and the team set about their work putting their experiences learnt in training and Neil’s academy with some exceptional Firebolts performances. The team excelled and played some of their best football against the strongest teams in the league, sweeping them aside and setting up the final game of the season and a chance to claim the 11th Grade Premier Championship as their own. The game was a fitting way to end the season against Eastern Suburbs (who have won the league the previous three years) with another superb display of team work to come from a goal behind to get the result required to win the championship outright! Without a regular goalkeeper, we still recorded the best defensive record in the league which was our benchmark and set the platform and confi-

dence to attack. And attack we did, through our solid midfield unit setting up our threatening attackers who scored some exceptional goals and bamboozled many defences.

Oliver Gray

As always it wouldn’t all be possible without a lot of support from many people and a lot of thanks need to go to all the parents and supporters, the club, Neil Emblem, Back to Your Feet Physio and the Sonics and Cruzerio. Such a rewarding season for a team that has worked exceptionally hard and deserving of all their success, a real pleasure to coach and we now look forward to attending the Champions Youth Cup held in the Gold Coast in late September. Wish us luck!

STORMERS WINNERS Images by Leon Kirkbeck

This year saw two more 10th Grade Teams entered into the AFF competition to help with the development of Western Springs youth. One of these teams was the Stormers which was assembled with talented players from the In-house league. The kids were full of enthusiasm but unsure of what to expect playing at this higher level First game of the season was against the toughest on the table, Eastern Suburbs, who had been playing together for a number of years. It was an eye-opening loss for players and coaches alike. A session of fitness was added to the weeks training to get the team better prepared for the rest of the season. Next game, the team stepped up a gear and drew against Metro after being down 3-0 at half time.

12 September 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

Two games in, the kids knew what was expected of them and each player grew another foot’s worth of effort and dedication. Going from strength to strength the Stormers went on to win every one of the next 14 games straight, playing some magnificent football. Highlight of the season was the 3-0 win over last season’s champions Waiheke.

Championship with an impressive 84 goals For and 20 Against.

The Stormers finished in spectacular fashion winning the Division 2 North

GO THE MIGHTY BLAZE!! Images by Grant and Anna Russell

14th Grade Conference The Mighty Western Springs Blaze team, capped off a fine season by winning the recent 14th Grade Invitation Tournament in a dramatic penalty shoot out. The day began with three pool games and included a 1-0 win over a very good North Force side and then a really convincing 3-0 win over Eastern Suburbs in the semi final.

A big crowd had gathered around Ken Maunder #1 to watch the final and the penalty shoot out, and despite plenty of nerves, George, Flynn, Sebby and Troy all calmly slotted their spot kicks. Tom in goal seemed unfazed, and whilst he got a hand to one spot kick, he couldn’t come up with a save. At 4-4 though, Lynn Avon sent one over the bar and up stepped Phoenix. He confidently tucked his penalty into the bottom corner and wheeled away to join his Springs mates in wild celebration.

However, the final was against Lynn Avon, the home team and the only team to have beaten us at Seddon during the season. It was finals football, a tough physical battle and it ended with Lynn Avon snatching a very late equalizer after George Cory-Wright’s wonder strike had given Springs a deserved second half lead.

A well deserved victory and a fantastic day for a terrific group of boys who played some good smart football and worked tirelessly for each other. That spirit and culture evident throughout the season. Big ups again to the injured ones, JT with his broken leg and Mitch, both showing up to support their mates from the

sidelines. George collected the player of the tournament award and Tuyi went home with a new IPod courtesy of two magnificent Maradona turns in the semi final. Thanks again to Mark Robson for putting together a top tournament. Winning this tournament has capped off a wonderful season for the Blaze and a good result in the last game at home should see us finish 2nd in the Conference Division. The seasons highlight being the 5-2 demolition of old rivals and unbeaten league leaders Central Utd, at home and in front of Neil. Good stuff! Thanks to all the terrific support from the parents, both at the tournament and throughout the season... Go the mighty Blaze !! Cheers

CLUB PHYSIO ANKLE SPRAINS One of the most frequent injuries in football is an ankle sprain. Ankle sprains are can be caused during contact and non contact situations. The ankle is usually twisted and damage to the ligaments (the structures that join bone to bone) get stretched or torn, which causes pain and swelling at the ankle. Depending on the severity of the damage to the ligamnets, the injury can be classified as a Grade 1 (mild), Grade 2 (moderate) or Grade 3 (severe) sprain. Younger athletes bones can be weaker than their ligaments. If part of the bone is pulled away it’s called an avulsion fracture. Timeframes for return to sport for an ankle sprain vary from a couple of days to approximately eight weeks depending on the severity, but the ligament continues to repair itself for up to a year remodelling the scar tissue. It is recommended that the ankle is taped for the rest of the season to prevent injuring the ankle again.

OPEN TO

THE PUBLIC

Signs of ankle sprains are pain and swelling around the ankle, restricted range of movement at the ankle or inability to weight bear through the ankle. Different ligaments can be damaged depending on where the force comes through the ankle. The acute management of ankle sprains involves PRICE—PROTECT the damaged area, REST the damaged area, ICE the damaged area (only for 10 to 15 minutes at a time as you don’t want to cause a ice burn) and ELEVATE the injured ankle. Then get in to your friendly physio to get a diagnosis as soon as possible. Treatment of ankle sprains is focussed on restoring range of movement at the ankle, strength of the muscles around the ankle and retraining the body’s proprioception system (the knowledge of where the body is in space). We prescribe drills that will help you return to sport safely. I have included some photos of rehabilitation using a theraband and wobbledisc to retrain strength and proprioception.

Return to training should only happen when the ankle is strong enough to cope with the demands of the sport and taping is recommended to prevent re-injury. If you have an ankle sprain that needs some treatment on, give me a text and I will work out a good rehab programme designed especially for you! We are now selling Therapearl ice packs at Back To Your Feet and have wobblediscs, tape, therabands and other products for sale to help with your rehab.

GALACTICOS RUNNERS UP Images by Eva Thornton.

WESTERN SPRINGS GALACTICOS RUNNERS UP IN PLATE AT PAPAKURA 13TH GRADE TOURNAMENT After a great season together, with a promising run for the Division1 title derailed late in the season through illness and injuries, the team performed with distinction on a pristine late winter’s day on Sunday at a season-ending 13th grade tournament at Papakura. Drawn in an exceptionally tough pool with recently crowned Metro Champions Three Kings, East Coast Bays (5th in Metro) and the best 12th grade team in Auckland (Manurewa), the pool games were always going to be hard work. This was especially so given the illnessenforced absence of the team’s outstanding goalkeeper Will.

scoring what would have been just the fifth goal scored against Three Kings in the entire season. Ben and Thibault regularly got in behind the fullbacks of both Metro teams and the team as a unit created numerous goalscoring chances against these quality teams, drawing praise from opposing coaches for their talent and fighting spirit. A sudden death quarter-final against the Papakura team which had beaten the boys for the Div1 title and with which results had been shared one apiece over the season, was sadly ruined in the first five minutes by a clearly wrong

To their credit, the boys showed real fight in bouncing back from giving away early goals in both games against the Metro teams and consistently threatening to score. An early highlight was Ben Hiscotte running the ball down the flank from halfway, past the left fullback and around the big Three Kings centre back’s attempted cover tackle, only to narrowly miss

Ben Hiscotte away again

penalty and sending off decision by an ‘overexcited’ home referee. The boys had therefore endured some adversity and approached their plate semi-final against Metro team Bucklands Beach with real determination. Despite talking about the need to start strongly however, again an early goal was conceded. This time the fightback was sustained, with the boys dominating the remainder of the game and Thomas scoring a superb equaliser. Sam was controlling the midfield and the boys created numerous winning chances, twice volleying over the crossbar from close. A late breakout by Buckland Beach nearly saw the deadlock broken, but for a superb cover tackle by Cam. Penalties! This was an entirely one-sided affair, with Bas getting things rolling with a great opening save and Joe, Ben H and Sam slotting textbook penalties to spark wild celebrations. A tough plate final followed against season rivals the Manurewa Lightning. The theme of the day continued with the boys starting slowly and going down two nil at the break, followed by them dominating the second half, scoring one and hitting the post twice thereafter. It was not to be, but another effort to be proud of against an excellent team. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable day with great contributions by all the boys and an excellent all-round performance from our tournament MVP and captain Bas.

TEAM FUND RAISER White Stripes end of season trip to Rarotonga This year we thought what better way to celebrate another great season than heading off to sunny Rarotonga to play three matches against invitation sides including an Island U20’s Womens Selection Squad. The White Stripes travelling group including Coach, Manager and parents will fly out on 30th September and return on 7th October. This football exchange will be the first ever held in Rarotonga between WSAFC and Cook Island teams and may pave the way for future visits between the two clubs. The accommodation will be provided by CIFA, and is situated at the facility in Matavera complete with dormitory sleeping, cooking, laundry and shared bathroom facilities, as well as meeting and conference rooms and two great full size fields with grandstand viewing.

WSAFC

Our fundraising so far has consisted of a BBQ every Saturday morning as well as raffles and sale of pot plants. So if you have supported us already by buying a gourmet free range Neat Meat sausage on a bun with cos lettuce and chutney, then we thank you. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure please keep an eye out for us this Saturday and know that your money will be helping us to represent the Green and White of Western Springs in sun-drenched Rarotonga this October.

We are very pleased to announce that Bayleys Real Estate Ltd are back on board as a Major Sponsor for the club for the 2014 season. Their generous contribution to the club is reflected in branding and signage for the Men and Ladies First Team. Bayleys are pleased to be able to offer all WSAFC members an opportunity to support their local club by way of a $1,500 donation for every property which is listed exclusively and sold by Bayleys Real Estate Ltd.
