FROM THE COMMITTEE HI WS AF C ME MB ER S Well that was quite some winter season for the club. History making back to back promotion for the First Team has got the NZ football community turning a few heads! The sleeping giant has awoken! A sensational effort by Neil, Liam and the boys. Congratulations to all teams from all levels that enjoyed the success of winning their divisions. Well done to every player for taking the field at whatever level and the satisfaction and spirit enjoyed through playing in a team. For team Western Springs, it is clear the artificial turf and facilities have had an enormous positive effect on every player with every one of us able to train and play at times when many other clubs have been closed through weather. To have more teams able to train at Seddon has meant more of us getting to know one another and in so, a greater awareness of just how many of us don the hoops on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Whilst I am sure we will see many of you down at Seddon for the summer season, just a month away, for those members who are hanging up the boots for the summer, have a great break, enjoy the weather, and we look forward to seeing you back at the club for the 2015 season! WSAFC are aiming to try and open up senior registrations early this year (hopefully 1 November 2014 if the systems will allow) in order to give members time to not only register, but to save and pay. The good news is for existing members, the process should be much easier. When registering, it will hopefully just be to confirm your current details and then make your payment. This year the senior committee has opted not to increase fees and so you will only need to pay $250. It is also worth noting, that although there may be a credit card fee applied, this cost is being absorbed by the club, meaning you will still only see $250 come off your credit card. If you are registering for the first time at the club, then you will need to buy shorts and socks from the club shop (online).
WSAFC are currently going to be looking for expressions of interest for senior teams (men’s or women’s teams) to join the club. There are very limited places, so each expression will be carefully considered, rather than a first come first served basis. If you would like your team to be considered, then please email the club manager: clubmanager@ wsafc.org.nz. One of the requirements is to have 16 registered players (fully paid up—with registration fees being $250 per player).
Regards WSAFC Committee Members

CITY VICTORY COMES AT COST The Navy Blues downed Western Springs 5–3 at Seddon Field to make a winning start to their pre-season campaign but were left reeling after a serious injury to striker Joao Moreira. WORDS GORDON WATSON PHOTOGRAPHY MINI REIS
T
he Portuguese striker was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg just seven minutes after halftime as the ASB Premiership champions led 4–1. Moreira started the evening in style when he side footed the Navy Blues in front after just eight minutes from what appeared an offside position.”. The former Portugal U-21 striker doubled the advantage when he finished a delightful Emiliano Tade free-kick from close range 15 minutes later.
Then came the turning point in the match when Moreira was hit heavily by former Navy Blues midfielder Liam Mulrooney. Moreira was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg, an injury that doesn’t leave the talented front man with much time to recover before the season kicks off. With the pace of the match dropping a notch, Neil Emblen’s side added a third goal on the hour mark to make it 4-3 courtesy of another Navy Blues defensive lapse.
Niall Rankin pulled one back for the hosts when he buried a corner past Tamati Williams with an impressive header at the back post on 36 minutes.
Navy Blues midfielder Tim Payne restored the two goal lead with a clever finish after rounding goalkeeper Neil Dayal four minutes before the break. Cam Lindsay—the Navy Blues other midfield debutant - got in on the scoring act when he chipped a delightful finish beyond Dayal to hand the visitors a deserved 4–1 lead at the break. But Western Springs reasserted themselves after the break when Ernesto Lopez capitalised on some ring rusty defending to make it 4–2. 24 October 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz
Immediately after the restart Takuya Iwata worked himself into a good position to chip Dayal, the effort beating everyone except the crossbar. Iwata was in the thick of the action when he once again stole into the Western Springs area only to be taken out for a clearcut penalty. The spotkick was expertly dispatched by Tade for the Navy Blues fifth and to seal a rusty 5–3 win. Auckland City FC’s next pre-season match is with Waitakere United at the Croatian Club on Saturday 27 September.
