FROM THE COMMITTEE HI AL L ME MB ER S This instalment of the Club’s Newsletter is devoted to celebrating the award winners from Prizegiving and the amazing success we have seen at the back end of the season. It is great seeing so many kids enjoying their football, develop over time and see the rewards at the end of the day. We are now seeing strength in all our grades and this is reflected in the number of Division winners, tournament results through the year and participation in Auckland Football’s FTC and NTC programs. This is an outcome of having the foundation of great facilities and a variety of programs on offer. In mentioning Division Winners, the following teams won or came second in their Division and as you can see the list is getting longer every year.

WINNERS—BOYS 11th Grade Firebolts Premier Div—Coach Paul Thomas 11th Grade Corinthians Division 3—Coach Andrew Ward 11th Grade Jets Division 4—Coach Dave Cranefield/ Craig Abbott 11th Grade Roma Division 4—Coach Iain Daly Jones 12th Grade Rangers Division 3—Coach Chris Cherry 13th Grade Cosmos Division 2—Coach Dean Nicholson 17th Grade Jones Division 1—Coach Greg Jones

As mentioned in most of the events, we will be looking to open enrolments early in the New Year and considering the growth we are seeing I would recommend getting in early to secure your spot for next season.

Caleb has all the attributes to be the best Goalkeeper at this club. He is mobile, athletic and a great shot stopper and has lightning fast reactions. BEST MALE YOUTH MIDFIELDER Awarded to BENNY DANIELS

METRO 17th

Benny is a player of the highest quality, he is an exciting player to watch especially going forward but certainly isn’t afraid to do the hard yards as well. Usually playing wide Benny can open up teams with his close control and decisive decision making. Bennys talent go hand in hand with his attitude, he always gives everything even if it means playing out of position. BEST MALE YOUTH ATTACKER Awarded to PHOENIX SILVER

SILVER BLAZE 14C

Phoenix has enjoyed a terrific season for the Blaze in the 14th Grade Conf Div. He scored 13 goals in 16 games against some good defences, including a terrific hatrick at home against league leaders Central Utd. His ball striking both from a dead ball situation and on the run is as good as we’ve seen and resulted in some spectacular strikes. However it is also his ability to really push himself hard and to drive his team forward that stands him apart. Phoenix works very hard on his game and we wish him lots of success in the future. I’m sure he would also like to acknowledge the terrific support and set up play he has had from his teammates.

ONE FOR THE DADS Images by Kelvin Chan and Francine Cameron

On Sunday 7th September (Father’s Day) the 9th Grade Nationals Squad Team, WSAFC NERO gave it their all to be crowned the Championship Winners of the Hibiscus Coast AFC Clarrie Morgan Memorial 9th Grade Tournament. On a glorious sunny day, fathers (and mothers) watched with great pride as their boys played skilful and intelligent football with great heart and determination to bring home another tournament win for the club. Ironically, the Eastern Suburbs tournament Nero won earlier in the year was played on Mother’s Day!

play. Just before half time Bruno Noonan launched a beautiful text book corner kick which landed straight on the boot of Maxi Beullens, who was waiting on the far post to smash in an equaliser. The kids lifted sensationally! In the second half the kids passing game was strong and Matthew

The kids had a strong pool but managed to get through undefeated to finish top of the pool and qualify for the Championship round. The boys faced a tough opposition in Ellerslie in the Champs SF who had also come through their pool rounds undefeated. Both sides were well matched and when Ellerslie broke through with a goal early in the first half, the boys were momentarily deflated. With great encouragement and coaching from Wayne Young the boys concentrated on being tenacious in their pressure game and dug into their determined 36 October 2014 www.wsafc.org.nz

Onto the final Nero played Birkenhead Blazers (who they had beat on Mother’s Day in the final to win the Eastern Suburbs tournament). The game was hard and the boys tired. Neither team were able to break through until in the second half when Joe Wallis muscled pass a defender to deliver a perfect cross to Will McKee who slotted in the winning goal for Nero. Another great day for Western Springs!!

Cunnington made a sensational run through the centre of the pitch and smashed in a smoking hot goal in the top corner to put Nero in front. Just minutes before the end of the match Ellerslie were awarded a controversial penalty to tie up the game 2-2. Kids headed to penalty shot out where the Nero team dominated winning 4-2. Confidently slotting in their penalties were Matthew Cunnington, Bruno Noonan, Maxi Beullens and Joe Wallis, but even more confident on the save was our wonderful keeper Joe Wallis who made two awesome saves to win the game.

The team had many goal kickers throughout the day notably Matthew Cunnington (6) and Maxi Beullens (5) but just as importantly the talent of our main defenders—Justin Chan, Toby Duff, Bruno Noonan and Ollie Cameron shone through with the team only conceding 1 goal over the 5 pool matches and (excluding penalties) a total of 3 goals over the entire 7 games of the tournament. Well done to all the team and our fabulous coach Wayne Young. You were all fantastic!

COERVER CLUB CUP Images by xxxx

Wild and Woolly Day at Coerver Club Cup Western Springs returned victorious from Papakura Army Camp after earning maximum points in the Coerver Club Cup on a day that had more wind than Wellington in election week. This is a special format tournament where points from each grade as well as three skills stations go towards the club’s overall points tally. The club with most points at the end of the day is declared the winner!

There are three different grades—U9, U11 and U14 and each club is allowed to put two teams in each grade. Western Springs managed to make each final winning the U11 Final and the U14 Final. The U11 final was comfortably won by the All Stars (Sonics) vs Eastern Suburbs. The U14 final was a tense battle against the winners from the last two years TKU.

This team had easily beaten Springs in the pool rounds. But victory was secured in the final after a come from behind draw that sent the two teams to a penalty sprint off that was won by Phoenix Silver by a whisker. Congratulations to all the teams who competed. A great day was had by all and WSAFC are now the holders for 2014 so we may need to get the trophy cabinet soon.

WSAFC Hosts the Best of 9th and 10th Grade On 21st September Western Springs held their inaugural 9th and 10th grade tournament at Seddon Fields. 35 different teams between 9th and 10th grade (that’s 350 playing kids) plus their parents and siblings braved the sunny, soggy, sunny, windy, drenching, sunny weather to give us an actioned packed day and some wonderful football. Western Springs had a number of teams competing including from our Nationals squad teams, AFF teams and in-house teams—all of whom acquitted themselves with great skills, endeavour and sportsmanship. Well done to

Western Springs Java 10th grade who were runners up to Eastern Suburbs in the Championship Cup and Fencibles Barca won the plate over Ellerslie Red Another big congratulations to WSAFC Nero (9th grade) who took out the Championship Cup defeating Forrest Hill Milford. The Plate was won by Eastern Suburbs Lillywhites who defeated Onehunga Sports. Thanks to all those parents who worked long and hard to bring the day together whether it be set up, baking, refereeing, running the BBQ and cake stalls, taking photos, printing, designing or pack up.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors McDonalds and Charlie’s Juices. It was a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful facilities, soccer talent and great Springs attitude and hospitality—we already have teams lining up to come back next year!

CRUZEIRO TO HERO Images by xxx

Cruzeiro have rounded off their season on a high with an unbeaten effort at the 12th Grade Papakura Tournament on Sunday. In fact they only conceded one goal the whole tournament as they steamrolled through the pool round and then accounted for teams that finished way higher than them on the Championship Ladder in an exciting and dramatic penalty shootout that gripped the sidelines in the semis and the finals. On a day that promised storm-like weather to hit Papakura around lunch time, it was important to get an early advantage before the track got drenched in rain and Cruzeiro definitely started with a hiss and a roar. The first game against Metro was a clinical display with Harvey Goodall from the Vespas donning the gloves

and allowing Caleb to enjoy some outfield time that included a goal from a header. Bradley Wilson the other scorer as the game was won 2-0. Round two was against Onehunga Sports Green. This was a much tighter match up but Cruzeiro found good space in behind the OS backs and used the width well. Max Plowman was the finisher with a great shot from outside the D that caught the keeper flat. Caleb was secure in goal and kept a clean sheet 1-0. Max was on fire again in game three against ECB and Jack grabbed a brace of goals to take us to a 3-0 win. One of them a pin point header from a Ryan Bolus corner. With little Jack not even having to jump for it as it dropped straight onto his head. The last pool round was against the easier of the Bucklands Beach teams (The

Bombers) but surprisingly this was where Cruzeiro conceded their only goal. At 3-1 they could be forgiven for not minding too much about the clean sheet as they topped the pools and went into the semis as top finisher. Tiaki’s stint in goal hampered a lot by his lingering injury from the season. That brought up an arm wrestle with old foes Onehunga Sports Red. Beaten 1-0 at Waikaraka during the season, Cruzeiro were keen to redeem themselves and a tough battle ensued. Although having the better of the game the score was still locked up at 0-0 and into penalties they went. Fencibles Barca were deciding their semi vs BB Gunners on the neighbouring pitch as we went toe to toe with Onehunga Sports Red. It took eight penalties each before Jack Duffy snatched the win with his rocket shot effort after Caleb had just successfully blocked the last four penalties in a row. Ecstatic to make the final, the boys had to strengthen their resolve to face Bucklands Beach Gunners, the table toppers in 2014. The rain that was forecast had still not arrived but the wind had whipped up and was now creating a pretty big advantage for one team. The battle was tense and physical. By extra time Bradley Wilson was sporting a blood nose,

Ethan, Ryan and Claude all had contact injuries. Dillon, Max and Louie were having to muscle up and dig deep and BT was bleeding from somewhere and his back was still giving him grief from the foul in the ECB game. All the while Caleb was pulling off these outlandish and spectacular saves to keep them in the hunt. But neither side could finish the other off after extra

time it was 0-0 and so they were sent into another penalty free-for-all. They kept the same order as the semi final so that the ‘missers’ could hopefully overcome their demons. It worked… as Cruzeiro found the net four times and BB Gunners fluffed their lines twice. The last penalty for BB was brilliantly blocked by the player of the tournament, Caleb McLeod.

The final goal to seize the Championship trophy was fittingly taken by Captain Courageous Bradley Thomas. The heavens had decided that the only storm to pass through Papakura on that particular Sunday would be one that was dressed in green and white and they all left with beaming smiles and a job well done!
