uckland’s central suburbs have figured prominently in recent media coverage about the heated Auckland residential property market.

bracket. Fifteen of these fell in the $1-$1.5million price band, nine in the $1.5-$2million range and four in the $2million-plus category.

With supply and demand dynamics creating spirited competition among buyers for limited stock, and the resulting upwards price pressure creating headlines, there’s no denying these are coveted suburbs.

Of the six central suburbs mentioned above, Grey Lynn, Westmere and Freemans Bay recorded the highest number of sales during August 2013.

CHAIRMANS MESSAGE

WELCOME TO THE 2014 SEASON AT WSAFC For the first time in three seasons, we won’t have to contend with a building site, ground closure or weather cancellations at Seddon Fields. Not only do the artificial pitches look fantastic, but the grass pitches have been given a decent break too. During the summer we have further improved our facilities by more than doubling the size of the lower car park and installed bike racks at the Motions Road end of the clubrooms. It is rare to go past the club and not see a group of footballers out kicking a ball around. The uptake by the players of the fields has been phenomenal. It is a joy to play on and a great many of us have played through the summer, be it in the

Soccer Sevens, various academies or the Saturday 11-a-side, run by the club. The benefits are numerous not the least being the improvement in levels of fitness by the participants. There are a number of changes we have made to make the 2014 season a great season for the club both on and off the field. The one that affects all the players is the change in strip. The change to the playing shirt is minor, the change in shorts and socks will have the most impact. We want the club on the pitch to represent a unified group proud of the club we represent. The strip of our 6th graders wear is the same as our first team will play in. Watch out online and on display in the clubrooms our new club jackets and supporters apparel.

Great news for players and supporters is our new kitchen menu starting on the 29th of March. Running Wednesday through Saturday, Patrick Prendergast will be offering a light training menu Wednesdays and Thursdays, kids specials and adult nibbles Fridays and a fuller menu Saturday nights. Fresh ingredients and wholesome food. Be sure to support Patrick in this new endeavour. We are a club going through a journey of change and we make every effort to make these changes as smoothly as possibly with the least disruption for our members. I want to thank every member for bearing with us, for being a part of what is coming is going to be pretty exciting!

ON THE JUNIOR/YOUTH SIDE OF THE CLUB Registrations look strong again as we head into the beginning of the season. We are now in the process of closing off trials and looking to announce representative Western Springs teams for the AFF competitions over the next few days. This is a difficult task in itself considering the large volume of kids who turn 4 March 2014 www.wsafc.co.nz

up for trials and we endeavour to have a close look at everyone before making any decision. In saying this thanks to Neil and Geoff who have done a great job running this exercise. We are also finalising coordinators across the grades and I ask now for your patience as we now start to work through the difficult task of allocating teams to 1200+

kids, we will try to keep as many happy as possible! Once teams are finalised over the coming weeks we will look to have the coaches and managers meeting which is important to attend, plus the allocation of gear before the season starts on the weekend of April 5th. We will ensure these key dates are communicated to you shortly!

NEW CLUB APPAREL At the end of last year the club went through a process of selecting a supplier for our on-field and off-field gear. This involved a RFP that included four major suppliers, the key requirements being quality, customisation of design, sustained availability, direct to customer delivery and price structure. The result of this process was the selection of Lotto and the signing of a three year supply agreement. The goal has been to make our club brand consistent. All players will

now have our own WSAFC shorts and socks to play in. Junior and Youth players will see the introduction of playing tops in a new material, with a design that does not require everyone to replace the shirts they already have. Senior players will see a refresh of playing tops, the gradual introduction of a new top ( similar in design to our refreshed strips), plus the ability to order their own named / numbered shirts in the new design. A new black ‘club shirt’ will be available for all (these can have names of teams or players added), and

there will be player jackets and supporters jackets available. We will also bring you a range of other merchandise to celebrate our 25th anniversary. As you will have seen from the registration process, orders are available online, and we will also have gear for sale at the club. It is set to be a fantastic season, with great facilities and a new look for our club as we celebrate this milestone year.

GRADE COORDINATORS

JUNIOR & YOUTH GRADES For a club of our size, the Junior and Youth Grade Coordinators are critical to the successful running of the club. These kind parents volunteer their considerable time freely and as a club, we are very grateful to those fulfilling the roles this season. Grade Coordinators are there to manage each grade and to serve as an integral link between the Junior Committee, the FDO (Geoff Brogan) and the many coaches, parents and children within their respective grades. They should always be the

first point of contact for any communication or information requirements. Preseason the greatest requirement is the forming of teams, dealing with parental requests and ensuring each team has sufficient players as well as a coach and a manager. Whilst this certainly becomes easier over time, it is also a very busy and sometimes thankless role, particularly at this time of year. All of our Junior Grades have well in excess of 100 children (and 200 parents) to manage and that can equal a lot of emails!

With the Youth Grades, coordinators are also required to provide support to Neil, Geoff and the Premier coaches during the trials process. The key to the role as always is communication, together with a good knowledge of your teams and a good rapport with as many players, coaches and parents as possible. Patience and a good sense of humour also helps... cheers volunteers!

CLUB PHYSIO Welcome back to the 2014 season. This is an exciting year for Back To Your Feet Physiotherapy and WSAFC. BTYF will be moving upstairs into the far end of the clubrooms and running our clinic for members and the public from there during the week and on Saturday mornings. We are pleased to be able to continue to offer ACC consultations to club members for no charge, and a discounted rate for private visits and for family of members. We stock all the physio equipment you need at very reasonable prices. Elizabeth Wong has joined the team and will be working with the Women’s Team this year. We hope you take advantage of having football physio’s on your doorstep this year!!

I was invited to demonstrate the FIFA 11+ to New Zealand Football and FIFA’s “Train the trainers” day and will be running a free FIFA 11+ training session for all coaches, parents and players at the club on Monday 17th March 2014 7pm. This will involve a powerpoint session in the clubrooms and then a practical demonstration on the pitch – bring your boots! Everybody is welcome and I would encourage all coaches and managers of teams to attend. New Zealand Football has endorsed the warm up and wants all teams doing it. There will be spot prizes on the night. The FIFA 11+ includes running, dynamic warm up and strengthening components and has been shown to reduce footballing injuries by 30-60% in players over 14 but also to improve strength

and performance in younger athletes too. The programme not only prevents injuries but improves performance too! We would encourage all of WSAFC to do the warm up as part of your training and game day preparation. Manuals, field set ups, posters, cards and other information can be freely downloaded from http://f-marc.com/11plus/ home/ As always if you want to make an appointment for physio please text me on 021 673 732 or come and see me down at the club. Stay on your feet and I will see you on the sideline.

10TH GRADE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

While most players had finished their football season, hung up their boots and club prizegiving was over, the 10th grade Firebolts had been preparing for the annual Norwest United hosted 10th Grade Invitational Tournament, otherwise known as the Nationals. Teams from around the country including Christchurch, Napier, Cambridge & BOP came together in Kumeu for 3 days of non-stop competition. Photos by Rachel Thomas What a weekend of wicked Firebolts football, resulting in perfect 10 wins from 10 games, the only unbeaten team and worthy 10th grade champions. Friday saw us play 3 x pool games (120 mins) against Havelock North (6-0), Waitakere City (7-1) & Fencibles (3-0). As the sun broke through and the temperature rose the players ended the day unbeaten and off for an early night’s rest. On Saturday we had 4 x games to look forward to, and 160 mins of football, which was always going to test the fitness levels. But we had prepared well having played several warm up games throughout September, and thanks to the 11th grade Cruzerio for the hit outs. Results against Norwest (4-0), Oratia (6-2), Hibiscus Coast (2-1) and to end a long hot day Papakura 4-0 meant we qualified 1st equal with Eastern Suburbs, 2nd on goal difference. Now well and truly exhausted but upbeat that we had put ourselves in the best possible position for the play offs on Sunday. So onto the Championship quarter Final and an unknown opponent in Claudeland Rovers we found ourselves having to come from a goal behind to score 2 late goals to advance to the semi final against Fencibles. There was plenty of support for both teams competing and along with the Sonics who were advancing through the bowl playoffs there was an ear of excitement as the teams picked off their way through the knock out games. The semi final was another tense, close game where the hard bumpy fields made for a tricky 12 March 2014 www.wsafc.co.nz

surface to control the ball on (especially as we have become accustomed to the truly superb playing surface at Seddon!). Fatigue was also playing its part with concentration levels, but the collective efforts of the entire squad who’s team work had started to stand out over other teams saw us past Fencibles 2-1 and into the grand final against Eastern Suburbs who had swept through their half of the draw unbeaten also. So a fitting final show down against a team who were unbeaten in the premier league season and had beaten us comfortably a few weeks prior, it was going to take a tremendous effort to get the result we so desperately wanted. Eastern Suburbs are a team who have played together for more than 5 years, play an attractive style of football and had won nearly every tournament throughout the season and went into the final as firm favourites. While the Firebolts were tired they were also highly focused on what they wanted to achieve and after a pre-match chat with Neil Emblen before the game our goal was to go out and know that we’d have to give it everything we had, leave nothing in the tank and do what West Bromwich had done to Man Utd the previous weekend and beat them. And that’s exactly what happened... A game watched by a couple of hundred spectators (a fair few supporting the underdog Firebolts it has to be said) and the most complete performance for the whole 40 min game that not only amazed the crowd but over roared the opposition. The boys took it to them, were relentless in defence, clinical through the midfield and in attack, which led to a great attacking move and superbly finished goal by Leo Maisey to have ES stunned. The Firebolts had the belief but the key was to

continue to concentrate and be relentless in attack as we had been in this same position against them in the past. Not 5 mins later and another well-taken goal by Freddie Lockhart had the crowd right behind the team and the opposition starting to feel some real pressure. Half time and nothing more to say other than to continue to play as we had been and enjoy the moment. Midway through the second half ES score from a corner, how would the Firebolts respond? Well more of the same, the impact players came on from the bench and threw everything they had into the game, not only defending like demons but continuing to take control of the game winning the 50-50 challenges creating more chances and dominating play. With 5 mins to play we were awarded a penalty, which Leo calmly converted and with a 3-1 lead we saw out the game to tremendous applause from the crowd, excitement and the realism that we had just won the 10th grade Nationals! A fantastic way to end the season and a very proud moment for the players and supporters to remember for a long time to come. The attitude, desire and consistent team performance was a pleasure to be a part of and many thanks must go to a host of people who contributed to the teams season including the parents, Neil and the club.

Roll on next season!
